Vince Carter retires from the NBA after 22 years

"This Carter has officially called it a career he signed a one year deal with the hawks last year was planning on it being is last in the league and now he has confirmed he is retiring from professional professional basketball after twenty two seasons he and Dr J. are the two best dunkers in NBA history yes they were showing the the two thousand dunk contest just a moment ago that's like going to be my standing memory of Vince Carter and I think it is for a lot of people here just one of those players I mean obviously longevity speaks for itself twenty two years in the league is tremendous but he just played when he was with Toronto with this unbelievable energy and excitement that was just so unique he also Jason Kidd did this he developed into a nice three point shooter like he realized okay can jump quite as high I want to stay in this game I love basketball I want to still get paid and he developed a three point shot Dadi yeah he's a testament to longevity actually made three pointer in the final shot of his career which is the one thirty six one thirty one overtime loss to the Knicks on March eleventh right before the shut down so I guess the fitting and would have been a monster dunk but we often a felony size lashed out so that's an amazing career then was very fun to watch and he will be hoping for

"When he first signed with Atlanta? You know I asked him. Him like you're bound for the hall of fame, you don't have a championship. You haven't really come close to winning a championship. He's never played an NBA finals game. Why go this route? Why sign with a team like Atlanta? And he said that's just not part of his DNA I. He never wanted to be that Fifteenth Man on the bench shoe would never play a game if he was going to wintering, he wanted to win it being a contributor. Won't so Vince Carter might not have gotten the send off that he expected or deserved, but it certainly was beautiful. Can you walk us through? What might have been his final NBA game last Wednesday? So the NBA announced the suspension of the season, it was it was in the fourth order. Is out tonight that it is suspended. Until further notice that will have more detail. It's suck me like fifteen ish minutes after that to realize that this is probably Vince. Carter's final game, so the fans I think when the fans saw that the NBA announced that the season was going to be suspended. A lot of them were channing. We want Vince. We want Vince..

"His his rookie year that we play Ewbal for teams explode on a younger teams team. All these years never looked cousins. The year he came out as the to be drafted to run as a rookie is when we found out that cousin. He was sitting at the family reunion table. My grandma s member. You've you've taught McGrath. He was like yes. You by from North Carolina. What my grandson when IN HOUSTON? Okay who's degreaser? Shiite Vince Carter. He's like what that s from getting. A phone call was cousin because so you know that was that was that was and then the next year I get drafted trump them so when he leaves after two years. They tried to get us against each other right at. That's the one thing I've always held onto like once. I finally had a sit down. Conversation WITH HIM LIGHT UTAH. Brian never say with by the media going to issue the exactly. Switch it up. Take some words out outlawed. Laso afternoon I always was very hesitant cautious in understood high-gain work outside of the court like with the media. You know when you say something. Some people don't care can say what they say but like talking about they were trying to pick me cousin Bang that's that's the Knicks next level. May that's experience to teach you. You know what I'm saying that like what's important. You know what I'm saying. You give your family. That's going supersede. See anything that the media in any service she got to do it. And that's the funny thing you say when you say that you know I was like at four so by the time I was like. Let me let me call do breath in talk to really understand this understanding. You know what I'm saying so if there's a beach families supposed to talk out whether we wanna hear the not right you know what I'm saying so we will we start. We talk about his by even say that so now. We go undercover. We've we do an idiot. So I'm here. They say Oh Matt said is not aim high with Dell so now see. I live with that forever like I understand. So that's why I want to be meeting chasing S. What's up that makes sense you know. Usually things change from the inside so i WanNa know if the game is changed at all for you. I mean you doing what you love for living. You've been doing it for twenty two years but from the time you get into game two right now. Light has it changed to the With more like work now. Yes yes and I say that because a in I'm trying to establish myself and I'm on top of the world in you know I'm franchise go-to Guy and obviously go through ups and downs. You don't win. You gotta deal with what you gotta do with but when you when you older trying to play this game in the game is in there is the game is fast. Get Round game as a lot faster. More teams play faster than what it was today. Now when they look at a look at your age they'll look extra production right so I'll walk into a meeting like you know. But how many games play birth. Look at look at the resume in my forties. How many games that I play out of eighty two games? I missed one game. You name the year before that I missed one game that I couldn't play if the coast We will sit you out because no you're older. We WanNa make sure like to to be able to do this. You know what I'm saying. That's what I've been doing for twenty plus years so that's the tough army light having to deal with so but other than that good man dope dope seeing you hear ran the city in Atlanta man. I love it. It's just the right time to be here for me at home thirties Yep You know what I'm saying. Hey It's been A. I have family. Who lived here Throughout the time is close to Home Sarah. Every man I got A. I'll say I got the opportunity to talk with Mr Andrew Young Yeah Ambassador. Young and it's definitely obviously you know for laser Near I've had the opportunity to talk with him and I enjoy stuff like I'm in deeply into music in As as I was in the band I used to write music for the band. I used to do all in the south. So you know with marched A right I was a drum major so I have you know A super passive for music You know I can engineer by all a studio at home because I love. It's so when my boss was doing. I wanted to do like when I'm building my house. I'm like I let me get a weight room. Let me give Jim. I need a theater in studio right here. Just very little news so it always seems like you know I'll rappers. Wanted to be athletes. Athletes wanted to be rebels at some point in time in they life is some well another. You know what I'm saying Have you ever play ball with a rapper? And you more impressed with skiers without you would be There's a few parts of a masterpiece was my teammate. What you play with nat asked He. He originally played with Charlotte and the next year. He came to us in Toronto. So my second year this is back when I saw my risk That came out. I ain't never really beyond which Bro when I when I was growing up. I was always the youngest and a little on the block man. You know what I'm saying. I never got picked so I. I took it upon myself to go up to the basketball. Court Man Candlelight Flatten Out. The ball on the go pick somebody. I never got good basketball. I never really worked at it. I never worked at a hard enough. It was always re wrapping hustling was always like can do just what I had said in my mind that I was going to do but I have. I have a love for the sport and you know have a competitive spear if you pick me for a team and the pickup game won't find a way to contribute foul school a lot. Appoint someone getting rebounds and steals in create. You know what I'm saying. Create opportunities would assist. I I ain't GonNa just sit down but I'm not to be the best athletes on the court So tammy like Quavo Man Quavo at Cueva could do anything right now but I watched him who I was like okay. I think we could do anything. I don't change played high-school so right Cueva who dirk of your Leclerc who Gee Her Boca. Who who still video her vote. Yes yeah there's a few cats that man they you know what I mean they go. They go up for Travis. Travis gagging who But you know what I'm saying. I just enjoy watching the two cultures. Come together you know what I'm saying. Because obviously there's a huge cultural presidents A BASKETBALL IN HIP HOP. And there's a true presents a hip hop in basketball. So just seeing the to come together and it's always been ria cooled just to to observe it and it was needed a be honest. It the love of the game. You know Basketball dust people like you said you enjoy watching it and going to see games and just watch. Athletes do what they do. And then you could incorporate the our culture if you would go into the game or not only us as African American but the other cultures who come to you know who indulge in our music because well I enjoyed it so when they the best of both worlds and I think that's what's needed I really do and that's what's happening right now. Now would you so? Would you consider coaching METADATA line? Now not initially you rather lie broadcast and be more executive executive level right like GM so she liked it all out of the holidays. Okay would you start at GM or you want to come in? Is You the opportunity to go straight to our will but like I definitely something in the executive area by your president just depends like we talk? What's what's the difference in. Gm and president so like the one who's making all of the the the the trees use the one that is the day to day guy. I guess extensive He's on fall and some some some. Gm's our presidents or have dual jobs in the president. He does some overseeing the GM is the one that's on own making a phone calls every day so you know. I'd have to think hard about that. I liked I liked Input GATE PUT teams together. So maybe a sister. Gm He assists with those but yet still works players as well. Then see me doing. If if ownership doesn't happen now I will do like something like assistant. Jim Is okay. I just want to be in it just to be in it and don't know what I'm doing right that's As key point you talked about earning the earlier so I mean I see what you go with that but I'm glad you you you see it. "Even so even though. The hawks have been disappointing and people thought there would be good. I don't think they were pegged as a championship contender. Not even a playoff team. No for some people. That's what's confusing right about Vincent. Some of these final years. It's not liking. He's ring chasing. I mean he's not playing on excellent teams right. I want to say man and forty-three I've no I couldn't do it. I wouldn't attended so he must love him. I mean the four-decade thing is cool. He's the only one that's done it. The thought I always had was why not go back to the raptors for one last dance now as constituted there a championship contending team even with Kawhi Leonard Gone. So maybe there was no space for him. I just always thought why not go back to where it started where the wounds have been healed to some point really because that that is the sports writers. Fantasy what you're describing crisis poetic for him as you know. Our fantasies never are in line with the people that actually have to fill for us. Tom Brady's on is do. We have to go there again place. We will not talk about Tom. Brady the bucks on this episode. Jackie Vince announced going into two thousand. Nineteen that his twenty second year in the NBA would be his final season. Which you're going to you got you got another run. I got one more time. You got one more time out three years ago. You told me two more years two years ago. You told me two more years now. We're getting back. We're down to one. I met this one. What did you think when you heard that? Well you know what I thought was wow. Here's a guy who everybody seems to really really like. Who's a good teammate? Who has a really fun? Exciting highlight player. And Wow he just never got a chance to even reach for the brass ring. I think he got to the Eastern Conference finals want. It felt like maybe Vince. Carter's career should have been a little smoother than that was. That's what I was thinking. How has he adapted because playing for more than twenty years the NBA doesn't just saying? I want to play for twenty years. And it's not easy and you alluded earlier to the fact that his game has evolved as well. What has happened there you know. In his early years he was a highlight donkey machine. All the way back to high school this gung man. It's going to North Carolina. The McDonald's all American game dickey won the slam dunk contest. And he was just one of those Dominique Wilkins kind of players. Wow in you with athleticism. I always thought he was a much more complete player than maybe people gave him. Credit for is just so much more fun to see him flying through the air and doing three sixty don'ts and weaving the ball between his legs and Dunkin it. I mean all the things the rest of us just dream about in. What ways would you say? His career is sort of a microcosm for the evolution of the game itself. That's wow that's various media. Thank you very much. So because although the game itself we know now three pointers are what matter. We still value athleticism in the NBA. But we know it's fleeting because we have a long line of bodies that tell us that but I think to just to be able to handle yourself with professionalism to be able to be a positive influence in the locker room as opposed to a divisive one. Your career is going to last a lot longer. You mentioned you know he sort of this locker room guy this iota. Now you've been around him a lot over the course of his career. What is he like? It sounds simple and I don't even know this to be real because I've never been with Vince. Carter out on the town or I don't know a lot about his personal life but he's just one of those good dudes at least from my perspective from a guy that you had to cover through the years. He was respectful very intelligent. Very perceptive very intuitive and emotional I loved the emotion when he was young and he he'd lay down those Jamesy do his own little version of the Shimmy. He's also very private right. Yes but isn't that so smart? He learned to be that after he had a very public event of course when he went back to graduate from North Carolina because he promised his mom he would do that and he did it on the morning of game. Seven of the Eastern Conference probably not the best day to choose but of course. You don't choose these things they just happen. And I think Vince Carter thought he was a little more multidimensional than guy that could just slam a basketball through rim. I think he thought of himself as a very intelligent African American Man. That could make good decisions that he was more than just a basketball player. He was involved in his community. And those things that are important to them and I think he thought he'd be applauded for that and it's still one of the great debates if you get into a room with ten people it's probably going to be split five and five on whether he did the right thing. Let's talk about that moment and history in the NBA. After the break.

Vinsanity: Is This How Vince Carter's Epic Career Ends?

"Jackie the early ending potentially of the NBA season could also mean the end of one of the longest runs in NBA history. Which at this point is perhaps the most remarkable thing about Vince? Carter's career right. I mean the fact that he's forty three years old he still playing as not playing for great teams so I wanted to start there and ask you a simple question. Why well it's a good question and it's funny because if you go back the fact that this dude has played four decades and played above the rim and then learn to play below the rim. Because that's what I always look at okay if you're a high flying guy and you couldn't do that anymore. Well why are you still playing? Disowning love to the game in respect to the game and the players that played. So that's Kinda why still do it? There's a certain small small number of guys that have incredible Immortal Street cred with other players and he's one of them. You mentioned him to younger players and there is just explode. Can you put in context? How unusual it is that he has played for twenty years. Well it's incredibly unusual because it's taxing game. When I knew I was going to come on this podcast with you. I happen to look game. Seven of the Eastern Conference semifinals which. I'm sure we'll get to but the reason I looked it up because I was curious. How many minutes he played in that game he played forty eight minutes in that game and he played during an era where you played forty plus minutes when the games were important. So that's why I think it's even more remarkable that he's been able to spend four decades because he played during a time when the best players played a lot. So in the intro mentioned that that might have been vince. Carter's final shots a three pointer for the Atlanta Hawks in overtime. What at the season been like for him and his team before that moment. Well it's interesting. They're they're interesting team. I'm sure they're disappointed. Travis Shank has one of the smartest Johnson the league he learned under the Golden State. Warriors Franchise drafted well brought in some really good young players and sprinkled in some veterans to teach them some things. Hence why Vince? Carter is on that roster. Remember I told you before about young players is exploding trae young as one of those players. Because I asked him out to me I still see DECISI. The highlights crazy events has been a true G. for me he's been a guy can lean on. If I have any questions I can go go to him anything. I ne- I can go to vent so and I'm sure he's learned a lot from him but they underperformed if in fact this is the end of the season for them. Now I'm not blaming Vince. Carter for that but I would say that as a whole I think he envisioned being the iota to a bunch of really sharp. Young jet is that we're going to shock the world and it didn't go that way

"Sue Chris Vitriol from rafters fans toward Vince. Carter Alas about a decade. You've been here for a long time. You Seen Vince Gladys best first year. Was Vince quarters. I will they ever forget. There'll be a segment that will never forget during that time. Vince becomes a journeyman. Essentially you know. He goes from the nets to the Magic to the sons to the mavs to the grizzlies. He's booed relentlessly every time he goes back to Toronto with any of these teams and in two thousand fourteen when he's back in Toronto. There's just this amazing moment. When the team honors him with a video tribute harder as received a standing ovation that has brought tears to his eyes they just showed a video tribute of parter on the big screen at first a lot of fans started booing and then they started rising and Chris. Endo the guy that used to call air. Canada has been cheered loudly. And maybe there is some closure awesome. Ac- that reaction because that's when it really started turning into you know him being celebrated once again and just from talking with them for these past two seasons you could sell. How much Toronto means to him. He just loves that city. He's invested in that city. He's done a ton of Kamson Toronto He's tried his best to give back to the Canadian born players who grew up watching him and now to finally see that back in twenty fourteen firms solve. It really meant everything to him because he had finally felt that he was forgiven. And it's hard to pinpoint exactly why Toronto fans forgave him. But do you think this is just a matter of time passing in this case a lot of time passing. Yeah I think so and Toronto. They were starting a new chapter with Kyle lowry and Marta rose. In you know those were Toronto's new guys you know. They became the face of the franchise so I think it was a matter of just them becoming a relevant once again in the NBA. Do you think that Canadian basketball fans just once they were able to kind of. Turn the page with this new guard and with a new look for their team that they were able to really just kind of sit back and evaluate. What Vince Carter meant to basketball in their country? Absolutely because when he got serano there. Were no kids playing in the streets and dribbling basketballs. You didn't see basketball. Hoops on every block or you know people wearing raptors jerseys that really change when you know that team and himself in particular really put basketball on the forefront of people's minds so. I think that was probably a big reason why Canadian fans overtime said you know what? Vince did a lot for Toronto. And this country and it's probably time to turn that page there now. Vince is forty three. He's the only player who has played in four different decades. You've covered him with the hawks where he's been the last couple of years. How is his role different? Now in the League then it was back in his superstar days. Both on and off the court. Yeah I mean on the Court. Obviously due to his age and physical limitations. He's not dunking the ball anymore. It's a rare treat to see Vince. Dunk is he doesn't in warm ups like he still has it but in Game Situation. It's just rare so on on the court you know he's more so just become a three point specialist off the court. He's the father figure in the locker room. He's the guy that the rookies wants to turn to and yet as much advice and as much wisdom as they possibly can. That's what it's all about just sharpening the minds and opening new ideas and opportunities for them and be tough on them and just get them ready. Do Best I can. He loves when the rookies and second year third year players asking questions because he wants to impart what he learned throughout his entire journey into the new age like he wants his experiences to live through them. And especially with this hawks team. It's really really young roster and he's pretty much an extension of the coaching staff for the Hawks. He's the one showing is how to properly position their feet when they're shooting threes. He's the one telling. Trae young how to navigate the media and how to navigate becoming a superstar in the league like he loves that and. I think it's rare to have someone Vince who's obviously going to be a future hall of. Famer. WanNa take time out of his day to to make the next generation as good as he possibly can in perhaps one of the more poetic moments that we've seen in a in a superstars late career. Vince did throw down a dunk To pass the twenty five thousand point threshold last year Bitch. Fires back to at best. Buy Welcome to the Pantheon. The greatest stores there was awesome and it happened against the raptors to you know just being at that game you could sell that. He really really wanted to get the twenty five thousand points against the raptors. I'm happy I'm thankful for this opportunity to a very elite group. I mean I don't care if famer not I'm in a group where when you talk about storing it's not many can say they have this many points so man I'm thankful the raptors were. They understood what was going on. So they kind of you know docked off a little bit on defense specially when he drove down the lane and then got that dunk and got his twenty-five thousand point a understood the moment so that was really cool to see because again like this is a guy who's an icon and in raptors history and so watch the current iteration of the raptors. Do that for advance. It was really special to be there because you could tell how much respect Vince has. And that's probably the coolest part of these past two seasons you go to any arena. Detroit the guys in the Pistons Locker Room. Just have an immense amount of respect for Vince. He was one of the guys. They looked up to when they were younger. And so just watch the smile on their face and see dairy action to getting to play him. It's awesome and that's something again. That's that's part of Vincent's legacy just how beloved he became especially in this latter half of his career. So there are a couple of unique aspects to the final years of Vincent Career and one is that he never chased the ring right like he never demanded to go to a contender to get a championship. You know he agreed to sign and resign with Atlanta which. Let's be honest as a lottery bounty him. Why do you think Vince? Carter was not obsessed with getting a championship. That was one of the first questions I asked Vince. When he first signed with Atlanta you know I asked him like. You're bound for the hall of fame. You don't have a championship. You haven't really come close to winning a championship. He's never played an NBA finals game. Why go this Y sign with a team like Atlanta. And he said that's just not part of his DNA. I Ki- never wanted to be that fifteenth. Man on the bench shoe would never play in a game if he was going to win a ring he wanted to win it. Being a contributor won't so Vince Carter might not have gotten the send off that he expected or deserved but it certainly was beautiful. Can you walk us through? What might have been his final and be game last Wednesday so the NBA announced the suspension of the season. It was in the fourth order. Is the tonight that it is respected. It's not that detail. It took me like fifteen ish minutes after that to realize that this is probably Vince. Carter's final game so the fans. I think when the fans saw that the NBA announced that the season was going to be suspended. A lot of them were chanting. We want Vince Vince..

"Vince Carter says that next year NBA season we his last thirty so fifty twentieth. I think it's twenty so he's, he's going to get the old. That's hor, he's going to get the two are going to give them a little memento, and he's gonna get a Harley a rocking chair. Needs all these kind of gifts. That's cool. I mean, Carter man, you know plate for never play Jesse. Can't he's like a guy like Andrea Dala who could play for a long time. Yes. Yes. And it was very effective while still playing. With Kawhi Leonard, the Raptors Find Success That Endures

"Coli Leonard is in the conversation of being the best player in the. World. There's no argument about that. Kawhi Leonard is certainly in the conversation. He's I think at this point certainly in the top three he was asked about that after the game. I just said you're the best player to league and he plays into Ronco. What does it feel like to hear that said about you? How do you feel you've established yourself and position to his playoff run? I don't really judge my you know game like the I'm more of a team team aspects with my team is going just wanna win on care about being best player. I want to be the best team always said that. And you know, just before the season when we made the trade massage felt that way about me, he told me how he felt and why he made the trade and, you know, just turning out. It's well now I mean we're in a finals in, we're not done yet. I mean, the trade cannot have turned out any better for really anybody associated with the raptors. I mean, they traded Damara Rosen Jacob poll. I believe that's how you pronounce his last name, if I'm wrong. I apologize in a protected twenty nineteen first round pick up protected twenty nine thousand first round pick protected. They got back awhile internet Danny green. That's a big time trade for the raptors. That was an all in move for the raptors. I think the rafters clearly saw LeBron's gone. You know lebrons part, owner of the rafters. He's out. We got a chance to go to the NBA finals, Boston kind of felt that way Philadelphia kind of felt that way. Mo- walkie. Certainly felt that way there are four teams felt like they had a chance to go to the NBA finals out of the east for the first time in eight seasons. The rafters did it. You made a tough trae at least an emotional decision when it came to D'amoto Rosen who certainly gave you his commitment when it came to wanting to be in Toronto. He got traded. These are the brakes so to speak, he's gone. You got a chance to get a top five player in the league who is healthy and motivated in Colli lynyrd. And he did exactly what he was supposed to do. He filled his end of the bargain. I got you to the finals he got you, as far as any player in your organization is taking you Vince Carter, couldn't do it. Damara Rosen couldn't do it. Colli Leonard did it. So he might not want to have the conversation about best player in the world. And I completely understand. I mean that's a conversation for us in the media. It's a conversation for fans to have. So and he kind of guy. So if you don't want to have that conversation. Fine. I'll have it for you. You were in the conversation for best player in the league, you're in the conversation, you're on the shortlist. There's five people that can make the argument, Katie Steph LeBron kuwa- a Janas. That's it. You just beat honest. You had a chance to go against Steph, if it's still up in the air, it can be undeniable. If you play really wellness NBA finals, and I have no doubts. I've no reason. To believe that he won't play. Well he's played well the last time he was there against the Braun when he was a younger player. "But oh, this is not. Okay. He didn't fire magic. Because magic basically got pushed out, right? My system magic referred to genius. That's my system talking sideway. Like we could talk about this for the good angles takeover. Take over. Kendrick. Thank you today. Why is Vince Carter still age forty two guys going? We'll discuss that Knechtel. Could you? Early. Vince Carter is never leaving the NBA. He announced yesterday that he's coming back for his twenty second season, which will be an NBA record. Vince averaged about seven points in seventeen minutes per game for the hawks last season at the old age of forty two. But there's no guarantee he'll be a hawk neck season. Vince is currently twentieth on the all time scoring list. Shannon house apprised are you? He's still playing. The thing is give accepted his role. He's more of a mentor now than a player that's going to help you win a lot of ballgames games as you Jenny mentioned seventeen minutes a game sim four played seventy six games. And if he worked it will be on the team next year could be the first player to play in four different decades ninety thousands of teens and twenties. Wow. You know, what's? In order for you to do this. You have to accept that. I'm no longer that player in very few. Great players can do that. That's what makes it so hard for them to play for a long period of time. Because now all of a sudden, I go from averaging twenty twenty five the game and hearing all the cheering this about me to now a role player. I'm a bench player accepted that and yet and good for him. So Tom Brady next year at forty two will not have to play special teams, right? Exactly not be a backup tied in the. He will be the starting quarterback. And he will be a star in. It is very very rare. Especially in basketball that a superstar can eat so much humble pie. He can swallow almost all of his VIN sanity ego. The point. I'll just be a call. I'll play seventeen minutes isn't bad, but I'll average single digit scoring average seven points the last five seasons. He's averaged under ten points a game. And he seems completely happy with. This once about a time he scored twenty eight a game back in his third season. Once upon a time, he won the dunk contest and his second year. It's never been quite the Senate right instead degraded when he Federick vice Olympics. That's unbelievable. Here's what we are not skilled going into your twenty two we say Carter there the time. You never dressed in. Vince it was been sanity now. So now goes by real go go. Government. Think about this. He made eight all-star teams, and he hasn't made an all star team in twelve years and he's still in the league. And he's still happy. Jeff. And again, Carmelo Anthony can't find a team he cannot find. He's been the league said we're finished with you. He's not going to accept this kind of role. Would you say he won't accept? Caught a heavy accepted this if I want to continue to play this is how I'm going to have to do it. Yeah. Carmella wants to play but he wants to play, but I still need to get them twenty two twenty Iraq. Because call still thinks he's a superstar in again Camilla can be a little difficult in the locker room because he is Carmelo Anthony and thence is just a good guy. He will blend into any locker room and everybody will like him, and he will be a mentor to all the players in. And he will. It's all positive vibes. He's he's high character. He's a good guy. Again, you say. You call them Carmelo we never dress him as it mellow. Lebron though lead to being Carmel will Lee before everybody started dragging him. Lebron now what LeBron leave? Major pressure on Raptors going into playoffs

"If Easter right now, let's talk about which team is the best in the east or at least which team. Do we have Preston? Are you guys down for this? Yeah. Okay. Let's start might as well start with the raptors even though we're going to get to the bucks. I'm really excited what Maliki Andrews next segment, but let's start with Iraq is because they lost at the buzzer. And that one heart thanks to generally on the Hornets are they lost? But right now fifty one wins on the season for behind the bucks. It'll be hard to catch the butts, even though the bucks are dealing with injuries and stuff. Are you guys feeling trust in the raptors especially coming this postseason because I think this postseason really matters. Everyone looks like as great as you guys are your regular season team when it comes to the postseason things really changed. And I think that's why messiah Jerry really made that difficult but necessary trade to get quite Leonard this year. I have a little bit more than the raptors are you on the same boat, buddy? I I predicted them to get to the NBA finals on the season started. I do have concerns that when I'm not talking about the first round I'm talking when we get to the second round after playing team like Philadelphia that it's going to get heavy dominated eyeso- bought the end of these games. And I think we see it during the year with. Colli asking him to be the closer at the end of these games. And there's been some good results. And there's not been not so good result. So yeah, I have concerns. I have concerns that cholera. It'd be a hundred percent when we get into playoffs here. He's certainly Nick up right now. I concern is that you have a rookie coach, Nick nurse. Who's never it's different. When you move one over. I mean, it really is. Now, he's the head coach and when you get into a seven game series. So yeah, I have I would say I have I have concerns for Toronto kind of where they are right now fifty one in twenty three. Yeah. And you also if you look at it. There's a lot of pressure. I feel like with this Toronto team for what they failed to do if they put on a good show during the regular season. And we know what the postseason has been of this franchise. But I think when you move a piece as popular in Toronto's demar rose and arguably more popular than Vince Carter was in his prime there for the length of time that he was there you could argue that's how big of an impact that this guy had in Toronto. And when you make that change of bringing quiet, Leonard. And then you when you make other changes like valid Shuna. So you bring in a guy like Marcus soul, who's a guy coming off the bench at this point right now, and providing that power and being that guy, I think when you made the moves the Toronto has made the pressure is on this team. I don't think it's as much about a one seater or not having a one c because as you look at previous champions at one seed is is not been in front of those teams names have won the title. But when you look at this Toronto team, they need to be healthy. These two stores have not played. Enough basketball as Toronto would've liked together this season as you look at as you look at Leonard in Lowery and for this team to find that groove and get going down the stretch. I don't think there's a team. I'm curious. What you guys think that has more pressure on them? You could maybe argue Golden State but outside of that. I think it's Toronto with the second most pressure in the NBA going into this this postseason. Yeah. I have to agree with you, Jordan. I do think that's Rhonda has a lot of pressure largely because of how they've exited at the hands of LeBron James or just being swept when they've had. I think NBA lead leading wins. Right. So there's a lot of pressure on

"Tournament is allegedly underway. Let us bring a man who will be calling many of the games all the way through the national championship Turner sports analyst and somebody we watched play in high school. You're even old now south lakes high school. Let's start with this. I ask you as an analyst Dookie when you watch Zay on. What do you see? Wow. See explosiveness? I see, you know, see almost like a combination of a linebacker who jumps like Vince Carter. Is really nothing we've ever seen before in terms of his explosiveness athleticism. But also how hard he plays and steals activity has energy just off the charts. We're so used to comparing people you really can't compare them because there's really been nobody quite like him. That's how unique Zion. Williamson is all right grant beyond Duke. You've had a chance to study the brackets who do you like beyond the blue devils? I mean who jumps out to you as a team that could could at least get to the final four not further. While there's a lot of teams, and I know a mouse opposed to say this. But I think North Carolina is really talented trouble for that. I can get in trouble for that. So I if anyone says anything I'll just pretend I'm seeing Smith, but but not North Carolina. Roy Williams has done a fantastic job. I do think UVA they've had a lot of setbacks adversity in the tournament. But I do think this is this is Tony Bennett's most talented team. And I think they'll get through and get to the final four. I think Michigan state. I know they're in the same region as Duke, but I I was at the big ten conference tournament last week. I followed them Tom Izzo. This team is just balanced tough. They defend they can score. They really don't have a weakness at all as a sleeper team. I like Texas Tech the best defensive team in the country. They got a kid Jerry Kover who's probably wanted to top five players in college basketball that nobody knows about he's capable as they are. Taking a long run. And I love Florida state. You know, I love what they've done Leonard Hamilton. They won twelve of thirteen games in the regular season. People forget they got to the ACC conference finals loss to Duke. But they have a lot of death in very talented. So there's teams out there. Other than Duke believe it or not that are capable for long run. I'm gonna ask you to put all your old man hat for second. You and I did this a little bit the other night in Chicago during the big ten turnament. Will you go back to that last year? Even when you lost to Arkansas Scotty Thurman shot sorry to bring this up. You had seen your late and teams teams at three or four all Americans seem to time. And when you're watching now played there, but you're watching now this one and done era are the guys that he good. I mean, you look at them and think, yeah, these guys could have played when we did and won something. That's a good question. I think I think I think there's some really talented players and a lot of young talented players. But you know, the difference was you had older players more experienced players who had the opportunity maybe go pro who didn't think that UNLV team in nineteen ninety blue blue out Duke and Denver in the championship game. And you had Stacy Augmon.

"I mean, you have some of those coaches who don't allow phones after a particular time. It just depends. You know, that's just what you know to to each his own. But you know, that's. One thing. I tried to. I mean, it's it's tough to tell the guy like stay off social media. I mean, I I'm still on it and see what's going on. But it doesn't run my life. It's not, you know, end all be all with what said, whether it's from media outlets. Whether it's from just random people fans, or you know, opinionated people who just feel like they can just say what they want. I mean, it's just like, it's a matter of opinion. And it's just it's it's kinda high goes, but it's tough because. I'm I'm I'm going from. Social media that was never around to hear it is these guys grew up in the social media era. So that's a part of them. And it's so tough to kind of take that away. We're speaking with Vince Carter about how the world has changed for the worse particular over the last twenty years, social me. So tell me it's you know, again, your forty two. Let me say this, though, the argument some of the young the young arguments are about social media because I will we'll be the first to admit social media. It has a lot of positive things that go that go to it as far as promoting your brand. And all that stuff. It's kinda when you let the negative side of social media take over your mental state your game. So so that's the part of it that I kind of try to help guys. Cya away from I just wanna say that. Because I that was we've had plenty healthy arguments on locker room about the good and bad or social media. You know, and I just wanted to say that before we move on. So go for it. No. I get it. But you know, one of the things is that nobody likes to be criticized in one thing. You know, I'm sure you've learned over the years to is no matter how long you've been doing it. No matter how big a figure you might be. I've learned that. You know, nobody likes to be criticized, you know, it could be the biggest star in the world, and it hurts and it takes people take it personally. And now they can see every single criticism out there in a way that they were shielded from before that has to have a detrimental effect, your state of mind sometimes at because think about like you look at the biggest stars in the world. It's just talk about let's say LeBron James, you know. So it in our day will let's let's say. Toby well before the social so let's say, Michael Jordan or the stars of that time. When you criticize those guys you maybe here from nineteen twenty thousand in arena. And then maybe read it a week later in the magazine, blah, blah, blah, or that night on sports center, fun now, it's instantly. So let's say fifty thousand fifty million people are following LeBron. And if they have something negative to say, it's right there, and then goes right to him if they wanted to so it's it's it has it has a different effect. So it's just I think this the error like I said, it has made us sensitive because it's more people to attack one person at one time. Now as opposed to, you know, in your in Rena, and you go to the on the road, and they will you or, you know, they're yelling as okay, it's like, okay. It's over with. It's constant. I, you know, and it's not twenty thousand people. It's twenty million people now nowadays, can you imagine? How? Any followers. Michael, jordan. Have if social be with around everybody. I was asked that all the time when I started, you know, the young guys, can you could I imagine what life would be like if Twitter Instagram Snapchat with around like my first couple of years. "Almost like he starting over. You know what I mean? Yeah. It is essentially that way. And it's like life is coming full circle for him. Because there was a point in time where he was that young guy who had vets on his team that were kinda, you know, show him the ropes. And I think this game is always interesting always comes full circle. You're young guy in the league. No trying to learn your way. And then you become an old older guy in the league trying to show the younger fellows the way. And then you have a better understanding of your trials and tribulations in what the older guys were trying to kind of get across when you're younger, and it's just it's just funny how like six years ago, like how my mindset has changed and how I approach the game. Now compared to when I did then and how little I knew them. But I thought I knew a lot right? But there's just so much. You learn from experience that just can't be like some people can't prepare you for certain things you have to go through yourself. And I never understood that until I got in this position. So imagine by the way, he's been two decades so credits events, but imagine why you'll feel in six more years when you're my age thirty three right? Oh, I'm sure. That'll be a completely different experience. And I'll have like a nineteen year old kid on my team at that point for sure or maybe eighteen with the rule change potentially coming in place. I'll be thirty three years old with a nineteen year old kid on my team, and like just to try to continue to mold them and help them point them in the right direction. I'm sure the game. How have changed again in six years to like the way the game is played obviously now twenty years twenty years ago, Vince Carter the arenas probably were different. I'm sure the names of changing a lot of arenas this probably more bridges and certain cities. The roads have changed the food the type of food you eat the the travel the private jets. I'm sure a lot of things have been edited in in the last twenty years that weren't there when he first got to league. Yeah. Speaking of all the new that's what we would call in the biz a professional transition Tom Brady who is about the same as as Vince Carter against Jared Goff, who is about the age of an NBA rookie or some MBA rookies. What what are you? This up. You know, I like the Rams I think you like the patriots are you sticking with the pick. And are you rooting for Tom Brady to win a seventh championship or six? I should say. I have no rooting interest right now. I haven't put any money on the game yet. But just kind of analyzing in watching from far, I think that Tom Brady's leadership is experienced on the fact that he's battled tested and has essentially faced every type of defense. He's he's phase every type obstacle and has answered the call time and time again, I think he'll be prepared and having lost the Super Bowl last year. I think that that of haunt him and will drive motivate him to win this this upcoming Super Bowl. And I think the Rams are great team. I think that their position to to do some great things they have a tremendous defense. Tremendous offensive coordinator and head coach and golf is great player. But in this, particular instance, in this situation that experience in that that championship pedigree from the patriots. They're all battle-tested. They've all been there before. They probably have a Super Bowl routine. They're going through because this is like the knife time for Brady in the sixth and seventh time for a lot of those players..

"And I'll admit I've been critical of his boxing ability at times, but that man has always got a chance with the best in the world because he has got this free. Freak of nature power. That is just I mean, it is like watching Vince Carter dunk. It's like watching Barry Bonds hit a woman. I shouldn't use very it's like watching a Ken Griffey hit home runs out. Like, I couldn't get and you and you're up there. They're like gravity time. But this is your friend. But when it's had enough and kind of disrupts you airs, it's now time for the sake ABS overs that's have or do not have to take over. And some days are better than others of. You know in recent years. That's why when you talk try to hold on just to. Make sure to landing little. But the way the game is now the pace the place. You can't do that. You know, the the longer you hang up there. The team is probably at half court on my land, though, is now is like, hey, make sure you get the to get on back. He's Vince Carter the hawks guard forward. Now, I was gonna wait to mention your age you brought up your age. So you're forty one you'll be forty two in January, right? Wow. Forty two. If man does trae. Okay. What what is trae young call? You. Oh, so he doesn't go like most of the time every now, and then he comes with OG, you know. All right. But he could be your know. You know, he could be your son crazy. Wild. Do these guys. No one within now. But do you show them before YouTube video and just say just a reminder here you little punks? They see. And like, you know, sometimes, okay? I I remember when you did this success. That's it catches off guard. But at this lets, you know, like, you know, there is hope for these kids because they're basketball fans, not only are the owner just for social media. They're you know, they look at it watch. They watch the history of basketball, you know, I've been around. So I've played against hitch a lot of history of basketball, and you know, and I've done some things for the history of basketball. So these guys actually watched that because they loved the game like that. So I it's pretty cool. When one of these young guys will say something about what they remember from back in the day went either they weren't alive or just being born. And or just like young kids. I mean, some of these kids like some of the guys that some of the things that I did they were really two three four years old and probably wasn't paying attention or remember the game. But they still watch those video clips thank God. In April to put those V8.'s VHS games on an HD where still looks decent. Would you? You know, what the growth of the the three point shot? I mean, you know basketball is changed here since Steph curry came into the league. But if you if you were coming in now, what kind of player would you would you be the same player still? I still think I'd be the same player. I, of course, more than likely utilize the three a little more. But I mean, if I was young Vince coming into this lead. Now, I still would I mean attack the rim and. Do what I do. I mean you, and I believe in you when you have a player. I mean, I know the bid rains game is obsolete in something that you don't. Teams don't really use or want us. And I I wasn't like I didn't use a mid range game bet much. But I mean, it was just something like I wanna get in the paint. I wanted to just. Attack the rim and the three point shot or something I did use. It just wasn't used as much back in say this in the late nineties in in in the nineties at all really, you know, it wasn't used talked about as much, of course, three point shot you run you ran plays for it. Because you have the great resin Miller rip Hamilton. Well, he's more mid range and those guys like that who were staggered away threes. I mean, that's that's what they did. But it wasn't like now you have your running plays where you'll you'll post up a guard just to get the center a three point shot on the weak side. Now, I mean, it's just different game. Crazy. I did you walk with tiger..

"He's Vince Carter the hawks guard slash forward and joins us on the program. Vince, good morning. How are you? I'm doing well. How are you doing? I'm doing. Okay. Are you football fan? Oh, yeah. Did you ever play for him? I did I was a quarterback. Whoa. And running back and receiver quarterback wait where you're running back wide receiver and quarterback at the same time. Vince were you that good one point at one point? But mo- an a kicked extra point. And I was a snapper. In one year, but most of the quarterback as taller running back with a great idea. Decent. I mean house play varsity. And until I got a broken wrist in a in a barrel basketball game and the doctor. This is high school deductor since we had to make a decision on a sport. Because of just a lot of pounding basketball. Of course, they have football because what football is going to do to me and may decision. I think you did too. But I think you'd be great on blocking extra points and field goals. I'd think oh for sure that's a amid a living out of that to everywhere. Man back in the day. In fact, as young young, Vince. I was around the field of playing defense. Back there. Yeah. You know is one of those things pop one football was or does things you get as many athletes as you could just teach them a bunch of positions. Obviously as you get older, you kind of fall in place to a position that is comfortable or that that works with your Europe, Bility's and. Over the quarterback position is something. I did that plays. What's the most point scored in high school? Basketball. Yeah. Fifty three quarters in that's eight minute quarters. Isn't it? Yeah. Yeah. But when you see something like Klay Thompson the other night like how many points? Do you think he coulda had if if they just said, you know, what just go go get him? Clay. He was probably paste it to put up a little better eighty point. I think it could. I mean, like I say he could be more because the way he was shooting three point shot. It was like shooting mid range to. You know what I'm saying? It was just amazing. But who do you think would be the warrior if I said you gotta pick one to get eighty in a game. Ooh. I mean you have to give declare right now. Because he has a record. He gets the first night. What was more impressive? The only reason. Why Bill that's what I'm gonna say that now 'cause Steph is definitely capable. But we have to take right now the record and he doesn't have the ball for. I mean, everything is catching shoot it put me directly. He doesn't feel very long, and it's impressive. He doesn't need. A lot of triples to kind of get a shot is just if I see a clean, look, let it go. It's impressive. What's what what's more impressive? Do you? Kobe ending his career with sixty or Kobe putting up eighty one on Toronto. Oh, she's. Some if you're gonna go out and injure career. You know, he maybe he said, I'm gonna go get sixty tonight. Doesn't matter who it is. I don't care how good the defender is. I'm getting sixty on my last game. That's amazing. Eighty one is amazing. In itself. But I think when you going out with sixty. On your last game. Aren't good? Do you think the hawks would let you go out like that? Vince. It's it's you know, they weren't going to the playoffs. The lakers. It just depends on what the situation looks like in. If I'm in a rhythm. If it is like that..

NBA is Taking A Stance Against Mental Health Stigma

"Turn our attention back to Jackie McMullan's five part series or mental health in the NBA in the final foam ejaculates the future mental health and efforts league is making racist stigma associated with seeking help. One part is particular struck me guys when Jackie writes about how players will open a helping other players, but here's who won't be the former all-star, whose mental health struggles remain unchecked and untreated his agent frets about his client has begged him to get help. But the player declines saying he can't bring himself to see himself as a bone person agent explains because it doesn't match up with the invincibility of the player that he wants was I don't care who it is, but just in general, that feeling of generation of guys that still aren't opening Danilo Ellie. What do you? How do you have to this is an especially to have battled for all professional athletes because. There is this mythology we build around and we do look at them as invincible invincible, and it's people who don't have own abilities. And so a lot of times they're playing to a persona and they're afraid to seek help, which puts them in a particularly grueling kind of prison. And then if you add on top of that, if they're man of color, because in this -ociety especially being a black man in particular, there's no safe-space. There's no way you can be vulnerable without facing some level of scrutiny or attack. And so you add all those factors and it just is really heartbreaking to see. That's why I'm so glad that so many players are now openly voicing the fact that they struggle with certain things. People in this country feel like if you have money, if you have fame, you have everything figured out. And a lot of times those things bring on more problems and more trauma and more tragedy than most people can possibly fathom or deal with.

"That's so fucked. People are destroying Trump's these reasons, but let Kevin Spacey his his star pass. That is so weird. Well, wise, Vince Carter trending Vince Carter son with the hawk, so he's going to play his twenty first NBA season and trae on his only twenty years old. So Vince Carter now has been the NBA longer than trayvon's, but alive. Wouldn't that be awkward? No. For who for like Vince Carter, like I would feel weird that like I'm just surprised in jar of his harder at this point is career like he's not ring chasing. Like if you're at this point, he's played himself into the hall of fame. I think, which I never thought Vince Carter was a hall hall of Famer, but what he's been able to do, but his last few stops have just been crappy team. He put for Sacramento last year. Yeah, trash. And now he's going to the hawks are going to be trash. Like if you're Vince Carter dairy, wouldn't you take like the veteran's minimum to go play Ron? The Lakers surely will broad rather have Vince Carter than lint Stevenson. You think? I mean, obviously think so. Well, why wouldn't anybody just pick up Vince Carter than if he's going to do that, you know, like, where's the place that he will long? You You know. know, it's definitely not on a team with another like it's not wherever Tony Parker is going or wherever you know, like you can't have too old Gia nobly in him. Can't be like hacking it up in a Ford together spread out your old guys, but he also has unique skill set that is still capable. Today's NBA he can so shoot threes. So if you're looking for a guy, come off the bench, maybe play twelve minutes for a contender. I just can't leave. He's going to go play for the hopping. This is how careers like mentoring trae young to not go one of eleven every night. Really bizarre to me. Mentoring trae young to not go one of eleven. Yeah, that's a fun thought. She Kevin love signed for so two guys signed for your contracts yesterday. We still sports podcast share and Todd Gurley sides. Yeah, eight or sixty billion. You sent me a tweet immediately when that happened, four years, one hundred twenty million. That's crazy to have a rough air is another old guy body. They got a lot of money. Go love, don't you, Mike? How will this Kevin love? I think Kevin love is not as old as you think he is. He's just been around a long time having been in the NBA nineteen. So he's one of those guys like little Braun is entering his sixteenth, that'd season, but he's only thirty three years old. So you think it will brought us Jesus Christ project plane forever. Yeah. What about this story? Ryan rails attached to home alone remake whether you're gonna go with the Frazier reboot now. I'm so sick of all these TV show reboots aren't you? They're just bringing back these shows because they're terrified. The people aren't going to watch the new ones and. Don't because they don't leave him on the air long enough for us to care. There's no way to get a tattoo anything anymore. I think about his films on the air now would have got cancelled the first season. It was going to get cancelled after that. Nobody watched it after the first in verse season was like six, five or six episodes. Nobody count the Seinfeld chronicles. Yes, something like that. Almost got booed Pugh measure that came out of its are various comedies ever. So wait a homo own second stoned alone is reminiscent of that Holly hallowed comedy class. It centers around twenty something we growing loser who misses the plane for his holiday ski trip. He makes the best of things by getting hot. That can't be right. Oh, maybe some of these talking, he's going to produce potentially star in home alone, revise called stoned alone. Thanks. No, thanks. But that's a Christmas movie. We got into whole. Yeah, we already had the diehard debate on the on the the show last week of the Christmas movie that he wasn't there. There was peasy think now they agree with me. Everybody agrees makes for you..
