NBA free agency: How rosters are taking shape

"The nba has scared off teams. An agents after the bogdonovich mess this week. We're not getting a whole wave of signings. Nobody yet right before we were getting ready for the nba draft the other night. We did a podcast and we talked about the bogdonovich deal. You said bogdanovich is going to have moments that will live forever he bucks. This is not what you meant. When you said that that bogdonovich would have moments that would live forever in bucks history. You did not mean that he would screw up everything with his potential signing in a trade with the milwaukee bucks this is such a an incredibly fascinating story because it all happened in the midst of the draft. This mix story comes out that an agreed to anything. And he's actually mad about this and it's like and then there's people saying i this is just a cover up so they all get in trouble but this is crazy like you have a situation where a guy worked out a deal. Three days before free agency was going to begin. We always kind of operate in the nba with a wink. Wink last year after everything that went down the nba sent memos out to everybody to really scare them and say hey. This isn't how it's going to be anymore. We got enough complaints. And we're going to change things and then within literally by the next time this comes about we have maybe the most egregious o of any of the situation that we've seen at least everybody else when they're working out their deals and they're recruiting players. They keep it quiet. This was not a quiet and in fact was out there for the world to see a deal that was not allowed to be made being made behind closed doors and then getting reported and so obviously that was just not going to happen. They were not gonna let that thing go through and now what ends up as a result is what you said. We get two free agency. Yes everybody's been working. These deals out for a week and usually or longer and usually it hits free agency and guys like whoa jr and guys like shams and even you unload the clip at five one. You know it's like this guy signed here. This guy's i near this guy sign here. It's it's very obvious that everybody's deal did not get done in one. Minute's time that deal was already agreed to and they had to wait until it could be official. Now we're not getting things announced like we usually would because everybody wants to put up the guys that the deals not worked out because of the bogdanovich crap right. Yeah i mean sure does seem like that. I just got off the phone with a team executive right before we started the podcast and and we went back and forth about that and his impression as as as as everybody else. I talked about that. It's going to be a little bit more slow moving with these deals because teams and agents have to put up this front that oh where are they going to zoom meeting after the time of free agency open like come on serious here. That's you know. I talked to somebody earlier today. Who remarked it's kind of a shame that in example is being made out of another small market team like the milwaukee bucks with this whole situation and i. I understand looking at it from that perspective. This is not the milwaukee bucks at all. They're trying to do is improved their team when they have this transcend talent once in a generation in of kumbo and they're trying to do everything possible in order to keep that player. And you know we talk all the time about stars going to big markets stars leaving small markets in an is kind of a shame that it happened that way With that slam unless you view it from one of their competitors at unless you're doing it for sure their competitors are like they're cackled about this. They're laughing but they're also there were also by all reports calling the league and saying t retail telea. Where where let's say you weren't negotiating with the guy. You were waiting until he hit restricted free agency. And then you can recruit and extend your offer sheet whatever. So let's just say let's act like some teams are playing on the up and up when that when when before. He can even be up for restricted free agency. A report comes out that the deal is done. You better believe if i was one of the bucks competitors. I'd be like yo no no. This is not like this. Is exactly what y'all sent the memo out for sure and we didn't and i didn't even get a chance to recruit this guy. I didn't even get a chance. These guys are getting deals. Done three days before free agents even starts like no screw that and so the league an inevitably has to come down on them. I mean i mean ultimately it's also probably the most egregious example considering evolves a an extension. You know john extension a new contract. Because he's a restricted free agent A sign and trade and it also involves a player you know having to have his deal guaranteed or santia silva. There's all these factors into it that you know and just the fact that it. It spreads so quickly. That night. When i when i first reported that the bugs will pursue a sign and trade with bogdan bogdonovich. The hawks are also expected to pursue a sign and trade for our rather send an offer sheet bogged down bogdonovich. You know everybody was talking about it in the league. It spread fast fast fast. And it's still clear what exactly happened. There's a lot of finger pointing from a single direction. What happened who leaked a. You know who confirmed it and all this stuff regardless something was lost in translation that night. You know like ten to midnight east coast. I'm when all that stuff really started trickling out fast. And they had a framework that was agreed to but no final agreement necessarily and so somewhere along the lines some party jumped the gun or it was portrayed as being jumped the gun but It's the the nba hat to set that example. I think i mean. I feel i feel for the bucks and i feel for smart smaller teams but it can be a problem and ultimately. I think that's probably where the league is drawing the line with what's happening there. It's just like you see those signings at six. O one right right after free agency opens five year deal. You know the brand new team. It's like really. They just negotiated this in a minute. And i'm not sure where the line should be. I'm not sure. I don't think it's enforceable. I don't think it's enforceable and so this really is just making an example of the bucks and then everybody else involved in the situation. Now he's probably gonna head somewhere else. Vince carter said earlier today on. Espn maybe atlanta. I would bet on atlanta to.

"The sixers like the play big both like to play pretty slow relative to the rest of the League, and then you obviously have the. The Jimmy Butler dynamic where he wants revenge and him going balls to the wall as someone who if you listen to our quarantine draft like Jimmy Butler is going to be in the top one per I guess the ninety nine, th percentile or the one percent I'm screwing that up, but the night he's going to be at the tippity top in terms of players who are in shape and ready to go so I cannot wait to see what he looks like and I want to see him with a little bit of extra motivation against the team that refused to give him a five-year Max. contract. Awesome breakdown I'm GonNa give you mine and I'll be honest. My reasons are. There's no question about it all right. I Want Books Wizards in the first round. As much as I've made fun of the wizards over the years, the team that I wanna see the absolute least in Orlando is the Brooklyn Nets. They're basically bringing no one. They fired their coach. They to me are really deserving of a playoff spot. You know if we had taken the top sixteen teams I just would not have even included them. I would've just like throwing the Pelicans into their spot. So for that reason, get the nets Outta here. Bring the wizards in I like this matchup for Milwaukee, because I would love to see Yanna average fifty five points for playoff series, and really just do something that no one else has done before and I think the wizards team to help him do that. You've got. The second matchup would be Toronto. Orlando honestly not particularly thrilled about that one in any way. I guess it's a good tuneup for Toronto they. It's kind of a rematch from last year. If you WANNA pitch it that way. Past that whatever just get Orlando out of here as quickly as possible. And I mostly I'm concerned about preserving the the best teams for future matchups in so. That sets up a possible Milwaukee Toronto showdown down the road. Now, the middle is where it gets interesting. I definitely was tempted by heat. Sixers like you were in a different way Michael I want the Miami Heat to ruin your life by falling to the sixth seed and knocking out the Boston Celtics just popping this Jason Tatum Balloon I. Want Jimmy Butler locking him down I. Want the completely ready to rock. Miami Heat spoiling every narrative coming out of Boston, it'd be so funny. So I, want Celtics versus heat that would leave Pacer Sixers, and the reason why I like that one. Is that it potentially sets up all sorts of juicy matchups down the road whether it's Milwaukee versus Philly whether it's eventually somehow Philly, versus Boston or Philly versus Miami. Or even a rematch of Toronto Philly, which you know of course ended with that Crazy Cola shot I think no matter what if you can come out of the first round with Milwaukee, Toronto Philly and then one of Boston or Miami. You'RE GONNA have awesome second round matchups. Basically no matter what so, that's how I broke down. Your urine, because this disgraceful, your projections make me sick. I think that you know like. Don't you want to see in the second round? Celtics play the raptors a match up. We have never gotten the the good fortune to witness. I WANNA. See a bunch of people crying. In Boston, that's what I WANNA see. No I mean I think that's where we're headed. Aubrey. oddest okay I'm being pretty tongue in cheek here. I think Boston Miami is really interesting first-round match-up if we get it, you know I realized there's going to be a lot of focus on well. What does Miami Philly look like with the Jimmy Butler returned. Can Simmons step up I mean there's a million storylines that direction, but if you're saying like which two teams are going to be locked in and ready to rock with awesome. Chemistry and culture, and then just lead executives who basically hate each other and Pat. Riley and Danny ainge. That's an awesome series and I know you don't like it because you're afraid you don't WanNa, see Miami, you're you're backing off your terrified? I do love the the bad blood between Danny and Pat Riley. That's always fun going way back to the eighties with the Lakers and the Celtics. That would be cool. I guess I mean I'm not afraid speaking just as my putting the green goggles on for two seconds. no I I'm not afraid of the heat. If I'm the Celtics I think the talent is just overwhelming. But well. Let's show the West Year because we're running out of time. GimMe your matchups in the Western. Okay so I mean Lakers I like. I got the Lakers. Obviously number one overall. I suppose I wanNA see the Pelicans. I WANNA sees ion versus Lebron I wanna see Brandon Ingram also and Lonzo Ball, and those guys that got traded discarded for Anthony Davis, WANNA see them be angry and potentially maybe win a game or two, which just totally possible. Well I. Really respect you for avoiding the you know the overthinking basketball twitter take, which is you know? I'd actually rather see the grizzlies. It'd be more fun. They earned it. You know they. They deserve it what I love the grizzlies as well, but I think that if we're saying, we have the opportunity to see Zion versus Lebron around one. I don't think you can choose anything else I. really just don't. I don't think that's being height beast. I just think that like when we're saying basketball history, you know where design career ago the idea that he could launch his postseason against the Braun in the bubble is pretty ridiculous, I think we all have to kind of root for that all right? Next up we have the clippers. Clippers against. I'm thinking Dallas? Is GonNa be the seven seed. They're just. That's where they're most likely. The land and the clippers are going to destroy them. three I have so. I guess it gets a little more interesting here now. The rockets are. Sitting in fifth right now I believe or Likely to land fifth. And I mean they could get to the third seed, and I feel like I'm pushing it if I go that far I don't WanNa. Be Ridiculous so I'm just going to say the Denver Nuggets will be the third seed, and they're going to go up against the Oklahoma City thunder in my opinion and I I have no idea who's going to win. That series I think you cannot discount. the weird metamorphosis that we've seen with Yokich and how that's going to impact his game. I don't know losing forty pounds helped you in basketball competition, fighting for post position against Stephen Adams. That's going to be very interesting to look at. and. Utah Houston I guess is the four five then in some order, and it just sucks for Utah again to run into this mismatch there I i. they just they can't defend that team that goes five out even more dramatically than they did in the past I don't know who Rudy Gobert guards this nightmare and it's GonNa come true again. So here's how I did it. I want a different route. I I WANNA. See The thunder slip and play the clippers, so we can get the Chris Paul kind of revenge versus his former former team in the first round. Then I want to see. The nuggets match up with the rockets primarily because I don't WanNa see the rockets. Play the jazz again and I. Kind of I. Don't know if I'm skeptical of Denver. But I ultimately think Houston's one of the best four teams and I think they'd be able to take care of Denver so if they knock Denver out in the first round, I would be just fine with that and primarily what I'm trying to set up is Dallas versus Utah because I do think Utah's like a wounded duck here without Bogdanovich, and if we can get Dallas in Luca through to the second round, so that the second round includes the Lakers, clippers, rockets and mavs. Feel like that's kind of ideal from view ability, watch ability, know viewership standpoint, so that's how I wanted to shake out. What do you think I don't think I would have a huge problem with that, but you're just totally discounting the possibility of Zaire on averaging forty and twenty and upsetting the Lakers. Never, discount but yes, I think that even in my wildest pipedreams do not have the Pelicans going on the miracle run to the second round of the playoffs and beyond, but anything is possible at Disneyworld. Michael Alright. We've reached the end of another episode of the open floor. I WANNA. Call out all the people out there. Email us open floor mail, Edgy Dot, com open floor, Male Edgy Jima dot com tell. Tell.

"I don't know if I to put myself on like a ration. But I'm so stoked for it. They've also got up to four nationally televised games per day so again. If you're someone who doesn't have, your favorite team has been eliminated or You don't have your local cable package or whatever else. You're going to be able to see up to four games on any given day NBA TV, ESPN, tea or ABC one other game to highlight would be Monday August third. The PELICANS versus the Grizzlies and we had all this talk Michael, about. Zion Chase towards the play in round, and can they make the playoffs enforced I on versus Lebron the first round and everything else you know the strength of schedule numbers that came out which you've already dismissed, but still we're going to discuss as if they're a real thing. New Orleans had. Ridiculous by a lot. And they get the heads up game against Memphis. They get to heads up games against Sacramento and Portland has one of the tougher schedules in there. In that mix there as well now in fairness to the Pelicans, they had a very easy remaining strength of schedule before the shutdown, so they were already kind of anticipation to have a little bit of a boost but certainly there in a prime position either force that play or potentially even overtake the Grizzlies now. The Grizzlies don't want to hear anything about that. You know you know those guys like John Moran. He's probably seething right now at the way. This thing has played out so that August. Third Game. Probably like pitched as a rookie of the year tight battle between Zairean and jaw. That's going to be a really fun game. To what did you make of the Pelicans strength of schedule like? Do you think they're going to be able to get in? I think they're going to be able to for sure. I also think that it's I. Mean Yeah to your point like before all this happened. Their strength of schedule, which was easier to gauge was pretty easy. And that's why a lot of the projections had them making the despite being so far down in the standings with some teams to leap over. But like. I don't know this is like they're really playing like. If you just look at the teams that they're going up against, there's really like one team that I would say is good, and that's the clippers they play once like I. I mean no disrespect to the jazz who kinda discounting, but you know not having Bogdonovich is going to hurt them. Like the clippers are really the only team that's tough like they play the grizzlies as you said, who are just a big question mark to me because of their youth. yeah, the king's Wizard Spurs like they played kings twice actually and then there. They close out against the magic so like. That's a joke and. I understand like I. Just don't think it's a coincidence that this team has some things sort of like a cakewalk in front of it, and there's really no excuses for them not to make the playoffs and I do wonder though if they were to slip up in the first three games, let's say they get blown out and they start this whole thing in three. Can you envision a scenario where the Pelicans as an organization are just kind of like all right well, this is our year and we're just GONNA. Sit Zaylon and we're GONNA. Sit Brandon Ingram for the rest of this thing like that would be. That'd be a disaster. If, that happens, I think Adam. Silver will personally go onto the court with Bob Iger and Drag Zion's body. into the starting circle to jump tip. Yeah I don't see that happening unless you're really is an extreme situation where they go and five and it's like all right. The whole thing is done. But it would be something to watch. There's no question about it. All right our final question here and we're going to get through this quickly. Michael I want you to make your dream playoff matchups because one thing to keep in mind with these seething seething games that are going to take place over the first two weeks of the tournament is that none of the ups have been set yet? We don't know for sure any pairing one two eight. Two seven, three, six, four five. HAVE BEEN! Set In either conference, they're all prone to being kind of mixed and matched in different ways so Michael What I want you to do is play matchmaker. Let's start in the eastern conference. If you could have your ideal. Playoff matchups for the first round. Who are they so like? Who To who to the bucks play an and so forth go from there. Yeah, I mean okay so from the top. Bucks I. Guess, it doesn't really matter. But I guess I would like to see personally the wizards I suppose just because I wanNA. See Brad. Beal make it and I like watching him. Play basketball and there's really no. No one is good as Brad. Beal on the Brooklyn Nets or the Orlando, magic which of the two teams more likely to get the eighth seed. But I know that that's not going to happen, but that's what I want so I mean bucks nets is probably what I'm personally projecting there for the one V, eight. It's a possibility that the Celtics get to the two seed. I don't necessarily think that's going to happen. Just because they have such an easy schedule, but the raptors are extremely good and I don't think that they'll falter because of just who they are and what their make up is. Yeah. Let me real quick. The rappers actually have a tougher schedule, so it is possible to have a lot of room to make up in a short time period, but if the raptors. Succumb to top schedule. Boston has a cake schedule. You put those two together at Greyhound it could happen I so I think for the purpose of this I'm just going to say that. The Raptors are probably the two seed and they'll. Probably go up against the Orlando Magic and that's GonNa be that's like the NBA TV like wet dream right there. That's just what we always get on that network. So that's perfect. And then Celtics Pacers, which is just kind of a a rematch of what feels like the last nineteen first round series between or Boston's first round opponent, the last nineteen years has been the Indiana Pacers, so that should be fun, and then where I'm actually intrigued and the. Care about the most, is the projected as of now four or five. As you said could obviously change. But the Miami Heat versus the Philadelphia Seventy sixers is just like it has the makings of a classic and I really hope we see it. The teams both teams are talented enough. I think to appear in a conference finals now. Obviously they they both won't for variety of reasons, but. Like if you just look at the star power, you have embiid. You Have Ben Simmons. You have Jimmy Butler you have a bio. The individual matchups where these guys are actually going to be defending one another and seeing where Eric's supposed to puts ban at a by always GonNa Garden beat as he did during the regular season. Is he going to be kind of the Ben Simmons Stopper? I'm really fascinated. See how that works out the heat like to go small..

"To to to guess gauge. which teams are going to lose collective focus in which teams are going to maintain our? Sustain it down there. So I I don't know like I. Do have some takeaways just looking at it under the assumption. That all these teams are going to be performing as they were, but I do not think that's a fair assumption to make. No your points are very well heated. I mean we see teams that we expect to build on you know positive momentum from one year to the next fall in their faces regularly, and we see teams that we expect to slide. After maybe losing a key player. Take off unexpectedly the following season I. Mean you really can't know and when we're looking at the amount of time off here being more than four months. That's longer than typical offseason, so yes, all concerns are validated at the same time Michael I think some people might say okay Bro. Thanks for the the intellectual take, but the stars are still going to be there. Right? Zaylon still going to be there for New Orleans Lebron still going to be there for the Lakers. Still going to be there for the clippers, tatum versus jaanus still that same matchup. Whether, you played it in March or or August and I I hear those voices two, because ultimately like we do have to sort of readjust in reacclimated this notion that we could actually be watching basketball here in roughly one month. And if that happens I, do think party. Your brain is going to click back on. Even if you're just watching to see okay, which team? came out of this thing properly or well, or which team does it have the chemistry I mean you're going to be asking those kinds of questions when we get there in a month, so I guess you know which of these. Which of these matchups have excited or at least intrigued to to do the the nitpicking type analysis that day July thirty first at four PM inside the historic Visa Athletic Center the Phoenix Suns versus the Washington Wizards. How excited are you for that matter oh? Come on Michael. So sarcastic. Yeah, I mean one of those team get eliminated from the entire chase. You pay lose. They both have a lot of room to make of it. SORTA like your whole summer hinges on that very I literally. Goes competition right there but I mean more seriously to answer your question. Yeah, series okay to. Come on bring a good attitude to this to opening I. I gotta I'm a little cynical. When it comes to the first matchup, the Pelicans Jazz I mean. I understand why everyone wants to seize on I understand the drought, the PELICANS and making the push to actually get that eight seed. But like why are they matched up against the Utah Jazz team? The there at one of their better scores is just not gonNA play because he just had surgery and I. Think that's a weird opponent to start things off with, but the game right after that. Clippers like ours. I mean that's before the season was suspended. That was that was everything those two teams. Everyone wants to see them in a seven game series. Some of the most memorable regular season games from this past season. Were between those two in my opinion like I. Can still in my mind's eye see Kawai guarding. Lebron James Down the fourth quarter stretch. Who that Christmas Day game and just like the the the star power. The stakes just the fact that they're both La Teams, and there's just like this whole like inner city rivalry like I love it a lot. I can't wait to see those two matchup. I can't wait to see. Lebron I can't wait to. To See what shape collision so that's going to be a lot of fun and then the Celtics Bucks matchup, which is the next day I think that's like a close second for just the the the top tier matchups on most looking forward to because I think that those are the two I mean no disrespect to the raptors. Who I think are excellent. Are the two best teams. In the Eastern. Conference and I just can't wait to see how jaanus looks i. can't we just see? TATUM looks like Kemba. Walker should be healthy now. there's a lot of lot of intrigue with those four teams because there aren't a lot of teams down there. That can actually win at all. I think like there's there's probably five maybe six teams and to get matchups between four of them right off. The Bat is exciting. So I think you did a nice job. Summarizing those headlining matchups I mean Lebron should be coming out to make a statement in that first game. Right I mean we saw how much are positive, a buzz and juice? They got out of the win over the clippers back in March. You have all this time off. He's been kind of laying low from a basketball perspective. And yet you have all these conversations about social justice and everything else. I can kind of see Lebron bringing basketball back with like a forty and fifteen you know, and everybody's like Oh my God I can see that emerging in my mind's eye Michael I'm GonNa? Give you two sleeper games from the first week that I think really excited. And I'm surprised. You didn't pick either of them because they both involve your Houston. Rockets okay. The first one is on that Friday night. Basically, the NIGHTCAP game is Houston, versus Dallas and I've had all these theories defense gonNA wind up sort of winning out here because it's going to be ugly play and choppy play and everything else, or are we going to be seeing five on five just kind of style basketball? If there's two guys who I want to see like, how do they just operate? Orchestrate in this environment. It's Luca Heart. You know what I mean. The idea that the final score of that game might be one hundred, sixty, five to one hundred and sixty two has me a little bit excited. Now there is backfire potential here To Eighty six, we're going to have to wipe this podcast off the face of the planet. That will save you from everyone knowing that you've got jumped over a block. It would also save me from a bad prediction, but that one I'm surly got circled. The other one I've got circled Sunday Milwaukee versus Houston and that's August. Second One's going to be on ABC. The reason why I've got that one circle Michael is we played that game? Hey, do you remember that transaction where we were going through all the different minor moves that had happened in February and March, and like Oh holy cow, markeith worse on the Lakers. We did that last week. If anybody didn't check that podcast out, please do. Do you remember that trash. Talk Michael you remember at all star weekend when Janas was going at Hardin. Basically we're going to attack him because he doesn't play any defense. And it was going back and forth and hard not about it and you know everyone's saying. WHO's the real MVP and it was going on and on for four rounds. We need to see that. Play out in an empty Jim. ORLANDO! If there's chances for Know rekindling that type of trash. Talk I think Sunday. August second is the fact that that was only four months ago. Makes me. Feel like I'm going to live forever. I that is incredible. I remember a yeah, we were you. Did it remember that? Remember, trash-talk, but I was there I remember now. Recording, an episode in my hotel room where we were recapping right after it happened when we sat in on the press conference. Yeah. It's a lot of happened since then Worrying and thinking and pondering about. NBA trash-talk is something I have not considered doing a very long time, but I'm here for it now. I guess that matchup will be fascinating for a lot of reasons I mean. Like, the bucks before all this happened, they were this like they were expected to waltz to the finals I think it's fair to say. In a Lotta ways, there was not a lot of not a lot of holes in how they played basketball on either end they the MVP. And you're right. This is a statement game for the Houston Rockets on a lot of ways, and there might pick to win the championship until further notice. and. I think to do that. They'll most likely need to jump up a maybe spotter to in the standings to get to the the four five. Seed! And winning games like this will obviously help them do that, so yeah. I mean I'm obviously going to tune into that one. I I'm very excited. There's a slight overlap between that game and Dallas versus Phoenix which is going to just really. It's just gonNA. Get my soul, not being able to sit through that one, but. Well Michael Michael Michael. It's going to be like Summer League. You're going to be able to have multiple screens up simultaneously for anyone who hasn't like really dug into this. They're going to be playing up to seven games per day. In three different gyms with staggered starts, and so on the longest days Michael People are going to be able to watch ten straight hours of basketball. Basically, starting from like one PM Eastern, you know in until the Games. Basically ending around eleven pm. Eastern I don't know about you, but the fact that these are going to be real NBA, players and not summer league players has a little bit excited also worried about how much basketball I might be..

"The three point line takes a couple of dribbles to get himself ready to take off. Weiss gets into a position. He said he is ready to take the charge. He is outside the cylinder or whatever else you want, call it like he's in a reasonable defensive position. He is ready to rock. And ultimately a guy just jumped over the top of him. That's ridiculous. There's no reason for anyone to assume that that was about to happen. And if Vince hadn't cleared him, he would have taken the charge. Right my favorite part of that dunk and there's a lot of them. But if you go frame by frame now after after Carter lands right, and it's amazing because he goes like. Spread, Eagle looks exactly like the man logo. He actually finishes the finish which we always see guys screw up right like it's so easy to back rim that I mean usually I front remit, Michael when I'm jumping over people. You know it's just it's very difficult or not. Everyone can just master perfectly, but it's it's very easy to try to do like the Blake Griffin throw dunk where you're just fling at the hoop and maybe hits back rim. He hits a completely cleanly lands at celebrates, but the best moment is when Weiss looks back up over his shoulder at the basket. As if like somehow that was going to explain what had just happened like if he just looked at the rim and the hoop long enough he would be able to kind of comprehend that he just got completely hurdled. It's amazing the look on his face. He looks kind of like ghost. He can't really wrap his mind around and I. Think he said recently that was the moment he realized that humans could fly. Beautifully put by him. And ultimately like I don't think he needs to be remembered. You know like a Brandon Knight or some of those guys where they're just like. Oh, they're the victim like I mean obviously he is on the wrong side of that dunk, but he has nothing to be ashamed. Ben, you know what I mean. This is the first line of his obituary like this is. This is his stamp as a human being. I'm just. Trying to stand up for the Little Guy. Who's actually a big I? Miss One because he pretty much played it right it just. He got out plate and there's no shame. It is a little bit. I want to jump in real quick with a quick personal anecdote that. Kind of puts me in the in the Frederick Weiss driver seat It's similar. It's not exactly the same. No one really dunked on me, but when I was playing intramural basketball freshman year in college. We went up against a team that had. Like three or four guys on it that probably should have been playing D., one basketball and I. Don't know why they were in our intramural league. They should not have been allowed. They were absolutely absurd. And, so we're losing by probably I dunno twenty points like three minutes into the game. And for some reason I picked off a pass and I'm headed the other way fast break layup and I hear these footsteps coming I know this dude is galloping to try to block my shot and so I don't even leave my feet to attempt the layup. Because I. Just want to get the ball up off the glasses quickly as possible. And as I let go of the ball, this man I look up and I see. This man's rear end and he hurdled me and pinned the ball or he's slapped a ball. Basically so hard off the glass. It didn't land until it got to mid court, and that's when I knew that I was never gonNA. Be a good basketball player. That was the moment where it was like all right I just KINDA WANNA retire. One of the most one of the most humiliating things I think anyone can ever go through and I just I. I hope you're giving me credit for telling that story on the PODCAST. Was the man's name Lebron James. Like. How do we build this story up to help you save face Michael. I wish it was Lebron James it was actually Jordan. Crawford is who did it and Nike had to confiscate all the tapes and all the footage, but. Incredible, you're very brave for telling that story. that. Dad made me kind of cringe a little bit on your behalf like I don't know. I got like reverse goosebumps of you know in any case, amazing story, a couple final. Quick Vince Carter questions here before we pivot Michael I mentioned some of his contemporaries like a I Wade Lebron. Guys kind of from that particular era where it's you know early, two thousands and into the two thousands. Of those types of players even Tracy McGrady. Where do you have Vince the couple? All those guys in terms of guys that you liked or you enjoyed watching. I don't want to Belabor this point but I just I'm trying to stack up compared to the other guys, the biggest names from that time period for me. He's behind Aldo. And I'm no Tracy McGrady Stan really I think the he suffered from some of the same questions advanced in terms of getting over the Hump and winning and everything else, but if you're saying like who's just kind of a more raw talented. Basketball player I think take t Mac I would definitely take iris crew over Carter, and then guys like Lebron. Weight I feel like are easily cuts above where Carter landed. And you could say the same thing obviously for Kobe as well anyone else. You would say that you'd have Carter. Or under or where you come now. He's behind all those guys Iverson. Braun weighed McGrady. Kobe I mean he's pretty firmly. not at that level in terms of peak and just the overall impressiveness of careers I mean. Like McGrady was in a Lotta ways wasted talent I don't think he applied himself to the degree that he probably should have and could have. But, at least he won two scoring titles, and he made five more all NBA teams then Vince Carter did. So when I'm trying to compare Vince to some respectable names throughout history that are in the hall of fame. Like I. Think Maybe Grant Hill might be the closest comparison justice like from the perspective of. Someone who was just ridiculous out the gate, and the sky was the limit, and he had the potential to be the face of the League and then. Injuries Kinda short-circuited Carter, but they obviously short circuited Grant Hill's career a lot more, and they forced him to be this role player who played until he was forty years old, and that's kind of where the similarities are but grant hill. You know made five all NBA teams and I think he's his apex was better. He was a better all around player than Vince. Carter was as well just a better playmaker, so that's Kinda the only comparison I have there, but even grant hill I'm still putting him above Vince. Yeah I'm with you on that. It's an excellent comparison, so just for context Sake Grant Hill averaged sixteen, six and four, Vince averaged sixteen, four and three I mean that's pretty darn similar both playing over a thousand games. I would agree that grant hill was a better player with a higher peak. But similar trajectories like you're mentioning again I. Think if grant gets in, I think of incidents in you know for the hall of fame last question for you and I think that you know some Vinci's diehards certainly feel this one..

Vince Carter retires from the NBA after 22 years

"This Carter has officially called it a career he signed a one year deal with the hawks last year was planning on it being is last in the league and now he has confirmed he is retiring from professional professional basketball after twenty two seasons he and Dr J. are the two best dunkers in NBA history yes they were showing the the two thousand dunk contest just a moment ago that's like going to be my standing memory of Vince Carter and I think it is for a lot of people here just one of those players I mean obviously longevity speaks for itself twenty two years in the league is tremendous but he just played when he was with Toronto with this unbelievable energy and excitement that was just so unique he also Jason Kidd did this he developed into a nice three point shooter like he realized okay can jump quite as high I want to stay in this game I love basketball I want to still get paid and he developed a three point shot Dadi yeah he's a testament to longevity actually made three pointer in the final shot of his career which is the one thirty six one thirty one overtime loss to the Knicks on March eleventh right before the shut down so I guess the fitting and would have been a monster dunk but we often a felony size lashed out so that's an amazing career then was very fun to watch and he will be hoping for

"When he first signed with Atlanta? You know I asked him. Him like you're bound for the hall of fame, you don't have a championship. You haven't really come close to winning a championship. He's never played an NBA finals game. Why go this route? Why sign with a team like Atlanta? And he said that's just not part of his DNA I. He never wanted to be that Fifteenth Man on the bench shoe would never play a game if he was going to wintering, he wanted to win it being a contributor. Won't so Vince Carter might not have gotten the send off that he expected or deserved, but it certainly was beautiful. Can you walk us through? What might have been his final NBA game last Wednesday? So the NBA announced the suspension of the season, it was it was in the fourth order. Is out tonight that it is suspended. Until further notice that will have more detail. It's suck me like fifteen ish minutes after that to realize that this is probably Vince. Carter's final game, so the fans I think when the fans saw that the NBA announced that the season was going to be suspended. A lot of them were channing. We want Vince. We want Vince..

Vinsanity: Is This How Vince Carter's Epic Career Ends?

"Jackie the early ending potentially of the NBA season could also mean the end of one of the longest runs in NBA history. Which at this point is perhaps the most remarkable thing about Vince? Carter's career right. I mean the fact that he's forty three years old he still playing as not playing for great teams so I wanted to start there and ask you a simple question. Why well it's a good question and it's funny because if you go back the fact that this dude has played four decades and played above the rim and then learn to play below the rim. Because that's what I always look at okay if you're a high flying guy and you couldn't do that anymore. Well why are you still playing? Disowning love to the game in respect to the game and the players that played. So that's Kinda why still do it? There's a certain small small number of guys that have incredible Immortal Street cred with other players and he's one of them. You mentioned him to younger players and there is just explode. Can you put in context? How unusual it is that he has played for twenty years. Well it's incredibly unusual because it's taxing game. When I knew I was going to come on this podcast with you. I happen to look game. Seven of the Eastern Conference semifinals which. I'm sure we'll get to but the reason I looked it up because I was curious. How many minutes he played in that game he played forty eight minutes in that game and he played during an era where you played forty plus minutes when the games were important. So that's why I think it's even more remarkable that he's been able to spend four decades because he played during a time when the best players played a lot. So in the intro mentioned that that might have been vince. Carter's final shots a three pointer for the Atlanta Hawks in overtime. What at the season been like for him and his team before that moment. Well it's interesting. They're they're interesting team. I'm sure they're disappointed. Travis Shank has one of the smartest Johnson the league he learned under the Golden State. Warriors Franchise drafted well brought in some really good young players and sprinkled in some veterans to teach them some things. Hence why Vince? Carter is on that roster. Remember I told you before about young players is exploding trae young as one of those players. Because I asked him out to me I still see DECISI. The highlights crazy events has been a true G. for me he's been a guy can lean on. If I have any questions I can go go to him anything. I ne- I can go to vent so and I'm sure he's learned a lot from him but they underperformed if in fact this is the end of the season for them. Now I'm not blaming Vince. Carter for that but I would say that as a whole I think he envisioned being the iota to a bunch of really sharp. Young jet is that we're going to shock the world and it didn't go that way

"vince carter" Discussed on BallCourt - The World of Basketball with Coach Drew

"Welcomes the ball court welder. Basketball and I am coach. Drew things are changing right now and health focus. Health issues is going to be the focus. Why Games aren't being played right here on ball court? Well I'm coach ruled. This is the of basketball. Yes the world of basketball seems to have actually come to a halt is been crazy. These last four to forty eight hours of basketball have been absolutely insane. The reason is is if you have not heard the NBA season has been suspended for Corona virus outbreak. Yes to Utah Jazz. Players were actually tested positive for the corona virus. Utah Jazz Star. Donovan Mitchell and center rudy. Gobert Beer Rudy Gobert. Who Jokingly was touchy every single. Microphone at a press conference last week joking about the corona virus was actually tested. It was initial person to test positive. At that moment they actually stopped the game in. Okay see because of what was going on and you can see on camera of Chris Paul asking what was going on with Rudy Beer and if everything was ok so day quarantine everyone and started testing the players to make sure that they were okay. Donovan Mitchell did test positive. They were reports that really go bear with being careless in the locker. Room touching each person's belongings and playing and touching each person as well so this has been an absolute shock. The doors closed due to the corona virus on the NBAC's also also in further news in regard to that the NBA G. League self. Yes the NBA's Developmental Basketball League that they do utilize to bring up. Talent is actually going to be closing their doors as well and suspended your seasons afoul along with the NBA until further notice until they find out exactly what's going on and they could get a hold on this. The seasons of basketball right now has come to an end so with that being said there are a few things that has taken place that you moments that we didn't know that was coming up. That now is actually upon us of Vince. Carter actually took his last three pointer and this could be that could be the last game that INS Carter place so I remember at one point in time you know. It was an amazing thing to hear about Vince. Carter as a matter of fact I was reading. Tweet saying that. You know the greatest thing about Vince. Carter is being able to tell your son about the story of Vince Carter and then taking them to a game show to watch him play. So is it. Was that moment that so Vince. Carter is GonNa be closed doored his career. Now you know so long happy trails. Hopefully we'll see you again soon and we get passes now. I want to move once in a world of basketball because everyone wants to know on a whole what is taking place not just in the NBA now that NBA doors are closed and the G. League close. Where are we going to get our basketball fix now me myself? I A huge basketball fan. So the first thing I did was turned to my Go-to my trusty backup when I don't have basketball is always there for me and yes the NBA. Oh the NBL stated Perth. Wildcats will plan to play in the grand finale series. Even though they were actually on a plane coaches and players were on a plane with someone who would tad tested positive for the corona virus. There was stated that that person was actually in a different portion of the plane so they didn't have as much Didn't have as much interaction as it wasn't any interaction as a matter of fact so they feel that they're comfortable place where they will be playing in that game right now It kind of scares me a little bit. You know because they were right on there and in Australia also in other news outside of Basketball Australia Tom Hanks and his wife Scott actually contracted the Kroto viruses. Well so we did the wildcats to date to right now as I am reporting right now. It is said that that series will continue but it may be a game time decision with the way things have been changing recently now with everyone locking down and talking during these times especially with a sports on a whole stopped in Italy due to this corona virus. It is safe to say that a lot of countries are taking precautions and a lot of countries are actually being lenient at this moment but there is one country in particular. That's not being as lenient. And that is China. China's Basketball Association actually made a statement today that American players have to return for the season. Or what they risk being banished from the team. Not from the team. I'm talking banished. From the association altogether and their agents will actually receive a two year suspension. Now of course due to the health concerns a lot of American players are deciding that they will not return currently right now they are forty Americans that are actually playing in China including ty Lawson Germany Lane and of course make them Dance Land Stevenson. So these are things that We we want to look at Stevenson. It is reported that he's in talks with Indiana and going back to the Pacers but in order to do that he's going to have to get out of the contract that he currently has with a team as well as he'd have to get that contract lifted off a fever as well. Hopefully we go see Lanson back in an NBA Jersey. Shortly but I am. I'm safe to say that. He will not be playing in China for the remainder of the season and possibly could face banishment. Now also when I initially wrote my show for this week I had some great news that I wanted to talk about. I wanted to really go ahead and dive into it. It was going to actually take on segment of its own but Jill to use recent events just knows actually being postponed the segment. We'll still be there by itself because I will be discussing this. We Wanna see those developments as it takes place but the basketball Africa Lee is here. Bahir is it was about to happen. As a matter of fact on March thirteenth Friday March thirteenth it was set to debut in Dakar. And I tell you it. It was something that everybody was waiting for. But as far as speaking with the Sengalese Government Day came to realize that it probably will not being the best interests to go ahead and go ahead and actually saw this inaugural season at this moment. Though it'd be one was saddened. It is something that that they felt would be the best interest. I will go ahead and take a brief little break. We'll be right back with you when I come back. We're GONNA talk more about Basketball Africa. And how the corona virus has been taking place on basketball and some other stories has gone place in basketball right here on ball court. I am code wrote. This is the world of basketball. Welcome back to ball court. The world of Basketball. I am coach drew. Yes and I wanNA thank you what I when we add left this talking about the basketball Africa League and I am super excited. Beat the fact right now that they are this is a league that is Kinda partnered with the FIBA. There's came together to make this league of strongly now just in case you haven't been noticing or haven't really been watching in December the actually held a tryout for this lead put together these twelve teams. That are strong enough to go at it now. This is something that's going to be next level a basketball league of this level sitting on that continent continent. Now they're going to be outfitted by Nike Jordan so it is going to be on the same levels of the G. League as well as MBA itself. This is first class all the way but at the same point in time we are amidst a pandemic at this point in time so they must go ahead and make preparations to make sure that not only protect their players. They make sustainable for them for the future. So President Ahmadou Gao fall stated that followed the recommendations of the Sengalese government regarding the escalating health concerns related to the corona virus Balls inaugural season will be postponed. I am disappointed that we are not able to off this historic league as scheduled but look forward to the highly anticipated launch of ball at a later date and I must let you know President Fall. We are one hundred percent with you. We look forward to the kick off for that season and we will be watching and waiting patiently as things. Go ahead and Reveal itself with the Crow Virus Right. So let's go ahead and move along to college. How is college handling this at this moment right now the NC two wave away has decided that they are actually going to be holding these holding games and the tournament games in front of absolutely no one just coaches and selected family members so it would just be those people actually in attendance for the NC sway tournament so watch madness is going to look a little bit different? If you're watching it on television. It won't have that same field same roaring the crowd and is going to be a little bit different but luckily enough. You will still have your conference games. No that is not the case. Actually most of the major conference and some minor conferences follow suit as well such as the big ten two. Acc and Immi axe have actually decided that they will be playing in front of empty chairs. My take on this is as a fan. I we miss out on seeing some some great basketball live. I guarantee how many people would would want to have been there that day that Wilt Chamberlain scored one hundred many many wants to be in attendance. But they couldn't get to it but as a human being. I definitely could understand that. We must protect each and every one of us so I can understand why they have not decided not to play in front of the public Actually I'm getting breaking news here I've seen here. Nc Two A. is going to cancel the entire two thousand nine hundred ninety two thousand twenty season so it will not just be not in front of the public it will not be at all apparently The Conference Twenty. Two Conference tournaments have been cancelled as well as ANC to a tournament itself has been cancelled so this corona virus is actually gotten to the point where it does a lot more things that are being canceled just so so let's just go ahead just assume reiterate the NBA season has been canceled. NC two ways season has been cancelled as as well as March madness ball..

"But, like I saw a poll question, it was best Toronto, raptor of all time, and I don't know who put this out, but damore derozen was listed as the best Toronto raptor of all time, then Chris Bosh and Vince Carter. Yes. Dhamar rosen. Vince Carter is the greatest raptor volts on because he brought cool. He brought a coolness to basketball to Canada. Vince Carter's the reason why you have a lot of these kids now playing high level, college basketball, and in the NBA, absolutely, positively because events Carter. But if Toronto wins, I think it would be a wonderful story, but I think, if you're looking at history, and you separate yourself from this fifteen twenty years down the road, you'll look back on this and say, well, you know what? That was a pretty amazing team. One of the great teams of time. Mclovin. Do you remember how big a deal was when Vince Carter missed came to game seven of the Eastern Conference finals because he was graduating that day feels like because we've seen Vince Carter for so long, I think a lot of people don't know that he was really good are some young people might not know why think that there's a group, there's certainly a lot of people in Canada, who that he headed a tremendous impact because he. Cool. And it was the best leaper in the game. And there was a coolness factor with Vince Carter. And sometimes that's what it takes. You need to see somebody where you go. Boy, I'd like to do that. Tiger did that for a lot of athletes where you go all I want to play golf now and Vince Carter did that to Canada? Did that to a nation? Yes. He exactly right. The stats don't tell you how cool a guy was our player was at any certain period of time, Vince Carter. In ninety nine two thousand average twenty six points a game. But that was the worst draft ever. There were no other players. There was nobody else in that draft. Wait till I pull this think it was the what wherever the draft where the, the Cavs took that Bennett guy number. Yeah. That was terrible draft. Yes. Boeing, you're right about the barn Yanni draft. With Kawhi Leonard, the Raptors Find Success That Endures

"Coli Leonard is in the conversation of being the best player in the. World. There's no argument about that. Kawhi Leonard is certainly in the conversation. He's I think at this point certainly in the top three he was asked about that after the game. I just said you're the best player to league and he plays into Ronco. What does it feel like to hear that said about you? How do you feel you've established yourself and position to his playoff run? I don't really judge my you know game like the I'm more of a team team aspects with my team is going just wanna win on care about being best player. I want to be the best team always said that. And you know, just before the season when we made the trade massage felt that way about me, he told me how he felt and why he made the trade and, you know, just turning out. It's well now I mean we're in a finals in, we're not done yet. I mean, the trade cannot have turned out any better for really anybody associated with the raptors. I mean, they traded Damara Rosen Jacob poll. I believe that's how you pronounce his last name, if I'm wrong. I apologize in a protected twenty nineteen first round pick up protected twenty nine thousand first round pick protected. They got back awhile internet Danny green. That's a big time trade for the raptors. That was an all in move for the raptors. I think the rafters clearly saw LeBron's gone. You know lebrons part, owner of the rafters. He's out. We got a chance to go to the NBA finals, Boston kind of felt that way Philadelphia kind of felt that way. Mo- walkie. Certainly felt that way there are four teams felt like they had a chance to go to the NBA finals out of the east for the first time in eight seasons. The rafters did it. You made a tough trae at least an emotional decision when it came to D'amoto Rosen who certainly gave you his commitment when it came to wanting to be in Toronto. He got traded. These are the brakes so to speak, he's gone. You got a chance to get a top five player in the league who is healthy and motivated in Colli lynyrd. And he did exactly what he was supposed to do. He filled his end of the bargain. I got you to the finals he got you, as far as any player in your organization is taking you Vince Carter, couldn't do it. Damara Rosen couldn't do it. Colli Leonard did it. So he might not want to have the conversation about best player in the world. And I completely understand. I mean that's a conversation for us in the media. It's a conversation for fans to have. So and he kind of guy. So if you don't want to have that conversation. Fine. I'll have it for you. You were in the conversation for best player in the league, you're in the conversation, you're on the shortlist. There's five people that can make the argument, Katie Steph LeBron kuwa- a Janas. That's it. You just beat honest. You had a chance to go against Steph, if it's still up in the air, it can be undeniable. If you play really wellness NBA finals, and I have no doubts. I've no reason. Major pressure on Raptors going into playoffs

"If Easter right now, let's talk about which team is the best in the east or at least which team. Do we have Preston? Are you guys down for this? Yeah. Okay. Let's start might as well start with the raptors even though we're going to get to the bucks. I'm really excited what Maliki Andrews next segment, but let's start with Iraq is because they lost at the buzzer. And that one heart thanks to generally on the Hornets are they lost? But right now fifty one wins on the season for behind the bucks. It'll be hard to catch the butts, even though the bucks are dealing with injuries and stuff. Are you guys feeling trust in the raptors especially coming this postseason because I think this postseason really matters. Everyone looks like as great as you guys are your regular season team when it comes to the postseason things really changed. And I think that's why messiah Jerry really made that difficult but necessary trade to get quite Leonard this year. I have a little bit more than the raptors are you on the same boat, buddy? I I predicted them to get to the NBA finals on the season started. I do have concerns that when I'm not talking about the first round I'm talking when we get to the second round after playing team like Philadelphia that it's going to get heavy dominated eyeso- bought the end of these games. And I think we see it during the year with. Colli asking him to be the closer at the end of these games. And there's been some good results. And there's not been not so good result. So yeah, I have concerns. I have concerns that cholera. It'd be a hundred percent when we get into playoffs here. He's certainly Nick up right now. I concern is that you have a rookie coach, Nick nurse. Who's never it's different. When you move one over. I mean, it really is. Now, he's the head coach and when you get into a seven game series. So yeah, I have I would say I have I have concerns for Toronto kind of where they are right now fifty one in twenty three. Yeah. And you also if you look at it. There's a lot of pressure. I feel like with this Toronto team for what they failed to do if they put on a good show during the regular season. And we know what the postseason has been of this franchise. But I think when you move a piece as popular in Toronto's demar rose and arguably more popular than Vince Carter was in his prime there for the length of time that he was there you could argue that's how big of an impact that this guy had in Toronto. And when you make that change of bringing quiet, Leonard. And then you when you make other changes like valid Shuna. So you bring in a guy like Marcus soul, who's a guy coming off the bench at this point right now, and providing that power and being that guy, I think when you made the moves the Toronto has made the pressure is on this team. I don't think it's as much about a one seater or not having a one c because as you look at previous champions at one seed is is not been in front of those teams names have won the title. But when you look at this Toronto team, they need to be healthy. These two stores have not played. Enough basketball as Toronto would've liked together this season as you look at as you look at Leonard in Lowery and for this team to find that groove and get going down the stretch. I don't think there's a team. I'm curious. What you guys think that has more pressure on them? You could maybe argue Golden State but outside of that. I think it's Toronto with the second most pressure in the NBA going into this this postseason. Yeah. I have to agree with you, Jordan. I do think that's Rhonda has a lot of pressure largely because of how they've exited at the hands of LeBron James or just being swept when they've had. I think NBA lead leading wins. Right. So there's a lot of pressure on

"Tournament is allegedly underway. Let us bring a man who will be calling many of the games all the way through the national championship Turner sports analyst and somebody we watched play in high school. You're even old now south lakes high school. Let's start with this. I ask you as an analyst Dookie when you watch Zay on. What do you see? Wow. See explosiveness? I see, you know, see almost like a combination of a linebacker who jumps like Vince Carter. Is really nothing we've ever seen before in terms of his explosiveness athleticism. But also how hard he plays and steals activity has energy just off the charts. We're so used to comparing people you really can't compare them because there's really been nobody quite like him. That's how unique Zion. Williamson is all right grant beyond Duke. You've had a chance to study the brackets who do you like beyond the blue devils? I mean who jumps out to you as a team that could could at least get to the final four not further. While there's a lot of teams, and I know a mouse opposed to say this. But I think North Carolina is really talented trouble for that. I can get in trouble for that. So I if anyone says anything I'll just pretend I'm seeing Smith, but but not North Carolina. Roy Williams has done a fantastic job. I do think UVA they've had a lot of setbacks adversity in the tournament. But I do think this is this is Tony Bennett's most talented team. And I think they'll get through and get to the final four. I think Michigan state. I know they're in the same region as Duke, but I I was at the big ten conference tournament last week. I followed them Tom Izzo. This team is just balanced tough. They defend they can score. They really don't have a weakness at all as a sleeper team. I like Texas Tech the best defensive team in the country. They got a kid Jerry Kover who's probably wanted to top five players in college basketball that nobody knows about he's capable as they are. Taking a long run. And I love Florida state. You know, I love what they've done Leonard Hamilton. They won twelve of thirteen games in the regular season. People forget they got to the ACC conference finals loss to Duke. But they have a lot of death in very talented. So there's teams out there. Other than Duke believe it or not that are capable for long run. I'm gonna ask you to put all your old man hat for second. You and I did this a little bit the other night in Chicago during the big ten turnament. Will you go back to that last year? Even when you lost to Arkansas Scotty Thurman shot sorry to bring this up. You had seen your late and teams teams at three or four all Americans seem to time. And when you're watching now played there, but you're watching now this one and done era are the guys that he good. I mean, you look at them and think, yeah, these guys could have played when we did and won something. That's a good question. I think I think I think there's some really talented players and a lot of young talented players. But you know, the difference was you had older players more experienced players who had the opportunity maybe go pro who didn't think that UNLV team in nineteen ninety blue blue out Duke and Denver in the championship game. And you had Stacy Augmon.

"And my it's not a it's not a criticism, but it's a concern. Yeah. Have you concerned? What we gotta find out, right? Is is going to hold up during the playoffs. And when you guys watch a play. I'm sure you see the same thing. I do they look like two different teams the ball. He's kind of doing isos stop and get new spots. And then everybody else is kind of playing move the ball around with Kyle and getting everybody involved. So they just kind of disjointed all your long, I think nurses, don't a great job. And you look at how. Well, they've played their second in the east with all the issues. They've had all the injuries. If Adam we've talked about these other teams Kyle and quiet missed half the season. And they've still wanted on games. All right coming up. I'll ask the guys Doc Rivers is there runner for coach of the year. He's making a pretty compelling case. It's time for another this replay. This is from two thousand and four is Vince Carter. No, no, it's true. Hudson. Let's take a look. Six on the shot clock outside the Hudson. Was honored their flaw. Kidding me? Ben cost over then. That's a great Stephen. "Back to the sporting life. And we're joined again by the time NBA all star the future Basketball Hall of Famer Vince Carter who is still playing at the age of forty two still playing well on the Atlanta Hawks and you got teammates Vince were less than half to rage. Some of your most talented teammates are twenty years old. You're forty two how does that dynamic work in the locker room? I'll tell you what you when you're rounded. When you when you're around it long enough, I tend to listen, and then once you kind of figure out the culture what did likes and don't don't dislike of the younger guys. And what makes them tick? It's kind of easier to kind of coexists with each other. Like you could easily say oh back in my day. You know, our parents would say your age, I would walk all these value. No, it's easy to say that. But it's kind of like now. You know, you said he drinks tray sits next to me. What twenty? Yup. And like it was like I've been playing longer you've been alive. That's your dad in a few months older than his dad. So it's kind of like, okay. People said, okay. What did we talk about? We talk about basketball. I I mean, obviously. And in basketball opens doors and situations on the bus bus ride plane ride opened up doors into different types of conversations that we've had back sometimes as well beyond these years and right in his wheelhouse. It just depends on sometimes like little pass or sometimes they'd be you know, like, we can't talk fortnight and video games because I don't play that. So it was like when you talk about like what I heard of it. That's about it. You know? So, but we we have dang. But we learned from each other believing that I'm still learning. I still learn would you enter the league back in nineteen ninety eight Don everybody even had a cell phone. Like, would you tell the young guys on the team that you entered the league before it was possible to mmediately communicate with anyone anywhere in the world? I mean, how did they respond to just the numbers? The facts the changes, the first thing the first of all the Cape fathom it and they're like man you own your, and here's what gets them more. So than the cell phone, the internet and social media, right? That's what that's what gets because like now, obviously, you're accessible around the globe pointblank anywhere. And I think now with guys with social media being like it is you can see what's going on before the game at half-time. That's one of the things like around the league. I've just talking to some of the older guys, and coaches or former players coaches or in higher position jobs, and they said the figures like. At halftime it for us. It was easy as a young guy because there was no such thing as picking up your phone seeing. What's what they're talking about? What said about you on Twitter now, God can get on Instagram and Twitter halftime, scroll through and see. What's being said in it tends to creep in your in your mind, and it has an effect on the game or the player in the second half. And this is terrible. Yeah. This is the way social media access has made a set incident in and it's like you said, it's it's fun because it's accessible, and you can meet all these people and see what the the top athletes going on on the other side of the country, which we did have that option. If you didn't read it in the magazine, you didn't see it yourself. You really didn't know much about somebody on the west coast for me who was living in Florida. So now, it's a totally different game. So when people get behind that computer. And say, whatever they wanna say if it's easy for people to to target and attack you and now, I think social media has made a little more sensitive as far as the feelings. I mean, it wasn't like that day. Like you. You say something is whatever in Dallas is like it touches it has an effect on the game. And it's just it's weird to say that, and I know probably weird for you to hear that what is the truth it? We're speaking with Vince Carter the future hall of Famer he's twenty third on the all-time scoring list in the NBA. He was the rookie of the year twenty years ago in the NBA. Would you say about social media? I mean, it's not just the constant feedback loop from fans, and you're saying how it affects you even while you're playing a game. If you're a young person who is wrapped up in it. But it's also the the back and forth among players, which is changed so much of what's going on. Yeah. I mean, it's it's just amazing because like you can have a guy now who's afraid to go block that that shot on a prolific doctor. Let's say or afraid to take that charge or something like that afraid of being a part of the the the wrong of an of a highlight. Because. Okay. Yeah. You know, I don't want to be on sportscenter. Yeah. I get that. But now it's like man, I don't wanna get cloud on on social media. Like those things now is just creeps into our league now, and I'm sure it's the same in in the NFL and NHL in. MLB all of that. It's just you worry about what's being bad now because it's just so so what's your advice? Then you tell guys just stop don't worry about it so much are they even capable of turning it off. It's tough to do. I mean, you have some of those coaches who don't allow phone after a particular time. It just depends. You know, that's just what do to each going. But that's the one thing. I tried to tell I mean, it's it's tough to tell the guy like stay off social media. I mean, I still wanted to see what's going on. But it doesn't run my life. It's not, you know. End all be all was what said whether it's from media outlets. Whether it's from just random people fans, or you know, opinionated people who just feel like they can just say what they want. I mean, it's just like it's a matter of opinion, and it just it just kind of high goals, but it's tough because I'm I'm I'm going from. Social media that was never around to hear it is these guys grew up in the social media era. So that's a part of them. And it's so tough to kind of take that away. We're speaking with Vince Carter about how the world has changed for the worse particular over the last twenty years the social media. So tell me again, your forty two real quick, let me say this though, the arguments some of the young young or arguments are about social media because I will I will be the first to admit social media has a lot of positive things that go that go to it as far as promoting your brand. And all that stuff. It's kinda when you let the negative side of social media take over your mental state your game. So so that's the part of it that I kind of try to help guys. I just want to say that because I we've had plenty healthy arguments that are locker room about the good and bad or social media. You know, and I just wanted to say that before we move on. So go for it before we let you go. Vince, when's the last time you ate something that was actually delicious, and it wasn't just like a salad or something the last? Well, now, there's there's a lotta these hellofresh. Feels that you can you can get delivered. That are pretty tasty. Nothing nothing tops the the burger from Wendy's. Because I used to be a Wendy's guy. Wendy's guy. That's that's that used to be my bike, you know, but you don't indulge anymore. No more the last. I've I've actually been been to Wendy's. I can't is worth it. The last time I've had a soda like I look at a photo now crap from just looking at it got a hate you hate you all. Advisor that had to be made like, you know, as we get older in this league nothing. The Tom Brady Bill the world digital Gino read, the who am I thinking of Dirk, you know, debris. They'll say like cutting back the sacrifices of cutting back on the sugars and stuff like that. Like, I had to do that as you get older, you I you want muscle still, but you keep your weight down, and, you know, cutting back on the breads and in sugars like like, no soda has so much if somebody can just cut back on bread and sugar like sodas alone. You'd see a difference that alone. I'm going to start. So. Now, I'm going to start tonight. This this is an inspirational, Vince. You. You can do it. Give it give it a I won't even say a month. I would I don't tell I would really encourage them and say, hey, just take a month. Sometimes I start with you. Take it in like if I get skinnier, they're all these reasons, you know, that's like a reward. Vince Carter a unique career an eight time all star rookie of the year a future hall of Famer and at forty two still getting it done for the Atlanta Hawks. Vincent, a pleasure. Thanks so much for coming here to talk to us in the sporting life. Oh, yes. It's my pleasure, man. Thank you for having me. Thank you for having me. Great..

So that's a part of them. And it's so tough to kind of take that away. We're speaking with Vince Carter about how the world has changed for the worse particular over the last twenty years, social me. So tell me it's you know, again, your forty two. Let me say this, though, the argument some of the young the young arguments are about social media because I will we'll be the first to admit social media. It has a lot of positive things that go that go to it as far as promoting your brand. And all that stuff. It's kinda when you let the negative side of social media take over your mental state your game. So so that's the part of it that I kind of try to help guys. Cya away from I just wanna say that. Because I that was we've had plenty healthy arguments on locker room about the good and bad or social media. You know, and I just wanted to say that before we move on. So go for it. No. I get it. But you know, one of the things is that nobody likes to be criticized in one thing. You know, I'm sure you've learned over the years to is no matter how long you've been doing it. No matter how big a figure you might be. I've learned that. You know, nobody likes to be criticized, you know, it could be the biggest star in the world, and it hurts and it takes people take it personally. And now they can see every single criticism out there in a way that they were shielded from before that has to have a detrimental effect, your state of mind sometimes at because think about like you look at the biggest stars in the world. It's just talk about let's say LeBron James, you know. So it in our day will let's let's say. Toby well before the social so let's say, Michael Jordan or the stars of that time. When you criticize those guys you maybe here from nineteen twenty thousand in arena. And then maybe read it a week later in the magazine, blah, blah, blah, or that night on sports center, fun now, it's instantly. So let's say fifty thousand fifty million people are following LeBron. And if they have something negative to say, it's right there, and then goes right to him if they wanted to so it's it's it has it has a different effect. So it's just I think this the error like I said, it has made us sensitive because it's more people to attack one person at one time. Now as opposed to, you know, in your in Rena, and you go to the on the road, and they will you or, you know, they're yelling as okay, it's like, okay. It's over with. It's constant. I, you know, and it's not twenty thousand people. It's twenty million people now nowadays, can you imagine? How? Any followers. Michael, jordan. Have if social be with around everybody. I was asked that all the time when I started, you know, the young guys, can you could I imagine what life would be like if Twitter Instagram Snapchat with around like my first couple of years. I I couldn't imagine you're from the flaxseeds, you're from the facts, absolutely..

"That's right. That's right. So so you guys that was your last year Carolina. You guys won the east regional you went to the final four you at Antoine. Jamison were the stars that team. And I had this very distinct memory when you guys won the regional defeating Yukon. I think it was right in the final regional in. I was in your locker room to interview you and Antoine. And I remember my late colleague Stuart Scott was there because he's a tarheel. I remember you guys spending some time, and he was so happy for you guys. It was such a big moment. Do you? Remember that scene? I do I do remember that. I remember the moment. I remember following short against Utah. I mean, I remember it like it was yesterday. It's it's one of those things that you tend to hold onto forever, and that was like twenty one years ago, actually. And and it's like, you know, when tournament time comes around, and you know, they tend to show the history of the tournament. And of course, when the final four comes it showed the history of the final four, that's when those memories become more vivid as far as like, we're getting there. I I mean people expected us to play in the finals I wanna say both years, and we fell short. So it was just. A painful painful situation. I think both times we had a significant read and we had Arizona under control in the first half in early in the second half. And next thing, you know, my baby mile Simon AJ Bramlett bringing some names from the past Michael Dickerson. They turned it up. And and we fell short and then the following year accomplishing the goal to get back to the final four back in that situation. And then we fall short to Andre Miller led team a triple double against. That's like, I mean, I tell you. I remember it like it was yesterday. Well, it's a good thing. Vincent after all these years. You've just let it go. You know, it's good that you're not clinging to this any. Yeah. We're speaking to Vince Carter who at forty two is still very much a productive player in the NBA. This is I guess you're twenty first season. You you've played fourteen hundred sixty six games in the NBA. So let me cut to the chase to what do you attribute? This remarkable long jetty say every it's tough to pick one thing and say, this is been be gym that I hold be deeply where I share the people. I think the number one to the competent the denominator for me is my willingly my willingness to do anything and everything it takes to still be here because it's a laundry list of things you have to do that. I need to do to prep and prepare and just to to to be ready to play each and every day, and it's one of those things where you just can't skip steps. And I think that's where I've been able to succeed over some other guys who probably should be in the league. It's just like if you have a list of ten twelve things you can't just do seven eight of those things and expect to to last because it tends to wear you down. Or, you know, your body tends to tighten up. I mean, when you get older, as you know, more you exercise, the more you need to stretch on the more you need to keep your weight on the control. So all those things matter. So the process that I have to go through I'm willing to do. And I think that's been the the the thing that has gotten gotten me over the top. And and kept me going outside of of course, my love for the game. So I still love playing still love competing. I mean, I still take wins and losses, you know, the same as I did in college as you can tell so I mean, it's just it's just a fun thing in this hard to imagine not playing the game. And I gotta tell ya Vince years ago, there's a long time ago. I did a story about Julio Franco who was the oldest position player ever baseball. And I think he was forty eight at the time he was still playing he was a remarkable physical..

"Almost like he starting over. You know what I mean? Yeah. It is essentially that way. And it's like life is coming full circle for him. Because there was a point in time where he was that young guy who had vets on his team that were kinda, you know, show him the ropes. And I think this game is always interesting always comes full circle. You're young guy in the league. No trying to learn your way. And then you become an old older guy in the league trying to show the younger fellows the way. And then you have a better understanding of your trials and tribulations in what the older guys were trying to kind of get across when you're younger, and it's just it's just funny how like six years ago, like how my mindset has changed and how I approach the game. Now compared to when I did then and how little I knew them. But I thought I knew a lot right? But there's just so much. You learn from experience that just can't be like some people can't prepare you for certain things you have to go through yourself. And I never understood that until I got in this position. So imagine by the way, he's been two decades so credits events, but imagine why you'll feel in six more years when you're my age thirty three right? Oh, I'm sure. That'll be a completely different experience. And I'll have like a nineteen year old kid on my team at that point for sure or maybe eighteen with the rule change potentially coming in place. I'll be thirty three years old with a nineteen year old kid on my team, and like just to try to continue to mold them and help them point them in the right direction. I'm sure the game. How have changed again in six years to like the way the game is played obviously now twenty years twenty years ago, Vince Carter the arenas probably were different. I'm sure the names of changing a lot of arenas this probably more bridges and certain cities. The roads have changed the food the type of food you eat the the travel the private jets. I'm sure a lot of things have been edited in in the last twenty years that weren't there when he first got to league. Yeah. Speaking of all the new that's what we would call in the biz a professional transition Tom Brady who is about the same as as Vince Carter against Jared Goff, who is about the age of an NBA rookie or some MBA rookies. What what are you? This up. You know, I like the Rams I think you like the patriots are you sticking with the pick. And are you rooting for Tom Brady to win a seventh championship or six? I should say. I have no rooting interest right now. I haven't put any money on the game yet. But just kind of analyzing in watching from far, I think that Tom Brady's leadership is experienced on the fact that he's battled tested and has essentially faced every type of defense. He's he's phase every type obstacle and has answered the call time and time again, I think he'll be prepared and having lost the Super Bowl last year. I think that that of haunt him and will drive motivate him to win this this upcoming Super Bowl. And I think the Rams are great team. I think that their position to to do some great things they have a tremendous defense. Tremendous offensive coordinator and head coach and golf is great player. But in this, particular instance, in this situation that experience in that that championship pedigree from the patriots. They're all battle-tested. They've all been there before. They probably have a Super Bowl routine. They're going through because this is like the knife time for Brady in the sixth and seventh time for a lot of those players..

"And I'll admit I've been critical of his boxing ability at times, but that man has always got a chance with the best in the world because he has got this free. Freak of nature power. That is just I mean, it is like watching Vince Carter dunk. It's like watching Barry Bonds hit a woman. I shouldn't use very it's like watching a Ken Griffey hit home runs out. That was when I could come up with you know, it's like watching Michael Jordan play like LeBron play Koby play like the it is a leak a leak. I'm talking about in the world. There is no one else that could do what he does or earliest very very few a meantime, what he say point zero one percent of the world probably lesson that in. So I'm glad that got cleared up because while size can definitely add power with some people when you have that God given ability to knock a man clean out. His but knock is so out his body. It don't really matter. If you're if you're five even ten pounds less it, it's you know, you got that power, man. Yeah. Man. Look interesting to see that back in the ring. "I'm not ready to. I don't think actually I don't think I'm as ready to detract from the Wildcats as you might be. But but to be fair to be fair if they lose this game at home to Kansas. You are going to make an easy argument over how much it hasn't done. And why the Wildcats are going to be nowhere near your top ten, but I got Kentucky winning. What about you? I got Kentucky winning the game as well. And my issues with Kentucky aren't actually with Kentucky with Kentucky's resume, and it's really not even with Kentucky's resume. My issues are like when people try to act like it's outrageous. If you don't have Kentucky in your top eight like if their tenth instead of eight bananas or if they're. Behind North Carolina. Then you know, you must be in love with Vince Carter or something like Kentucky's playing well your point about PJ Washington being more consistent. He's now scored in double digits three consecutive games. And that might not sound like much probably isn't. But he only done it once previously in this entire season. And that was in games three four and five. So he is. Still probably not what they. I guess he's not what I thought he would be in this season. But maybe not what they need him to be to maximize what they can be as a team. But he is he's been good lately and been consistently good lately. But I'm not gonna pick against a team that is playing well beating top twenty five teams on the road and at home beating one earlier this week convincingly hadn't lost at home all season. I'm not picking against them. When the team on the other side is yes, very good. But has a little shaky like we just watched Kansas lose at West Virginia. Now they're supposed to arena and win. I mean, they can clearly the basketball game whatever, but you know, put it onto my head out. I'll take Kentucky to extend this winning streak. And maybe even crack the top eight of the top twenty five and one. We'll see. Okay. Well, I wouldn't make any sort of promises. Their parents that you might not be able to keep okay? What else this weekend to us stands out because Kansas Kentucky that one for me this weekend? I think that game greatly overshadows every. Thing else. That's not to say it won't be a good week. And I think it will be and we do have some interesting matchups and at least two more that both involving teams, right? Yes. There are total of three games between ranked teams this weekend. One of them is Auburn at Mississippi State. We're gonna talk about that. Nick. I check this out looking to win your fantasy baseball league in two thousand nineteen..

"You being high show. So so Vince Carter he won the dunk competition in nineteen ninety nine. He's still in the league. He's still playing in the league Vince Carter's number three all time in threes. People look at it as a master Vince Carter, constricted any falls, everyone around and tells them stuff. Fantasy BS available. Now, I shit him. I said to my wife, I said this kid, he's he's like Bubba Gump talking about Shrin. And so every time he starts spouting off we go. We got coconut. Popcorn. And everyone starts laughing because everyone knows the scene it that hack full. The I thought the movie was I saw it in the theater, I thought it was revolutionary, and I I loved it. And I, you know, I know some people picked on it a little bit like here and there. I don't mean that the big way just mean like there's a lot of folks. To find things that that movie was groundbreaking to me. Excellent. And I thought you weren't Tom everyone is just excellent I loved all the flashbacks into running and growing the peer every part of it. I just love that move back. It was epic. Yeah. Fun movie. Yeah. Great great move into being I been in that many films before that. So it was early in the in the movie career, I was grateful to get that. So the wallet the curtain and the crystal three the kryptonite crystal from three Richard Pryor movie. Okay. This is without the. Price. They add on the big ten percent. Well. You can and we don't need to. But ultimately is a purist. When people do a thing where they go. For the sake of sake of argument in for not even for the sake. Alright went for sake pride when you sell your Jeep, cheap may hammer for one hundred thousand dollars but auction house gets ten percent. And the person who bid is paying the ten percent. So somebody was willing to pay one hundred and ten thousand dollars for your cheap. And when people say what did the Jeep sell for Talamo hundred ten because that's what some, but that's the check that should cut. You know, what I'm they people. Do a lot of like. Yeah. Well, the Jeep sold for hundred but hammer for a hundred no that's the price. Whether it's tax on groceries or whatever it is. That is the prize at somebody paid so mecca in the future. We will tack that on because it is the price toll for all right? And sometimes as the price goes up like car sales for five million bucks. That's five hundred grand that. Ends up to be real money. Are right? Do we know what the auction house does with the Vic? It's at least ten percent. It may be more check. We'll figure it out. Anyway, I it is round temperature. But it changes like per tier. So it's like over one hundred thousand goes down like eight percent. All right. We'll figure ten percent just for the sake of conversation, right? Also bear drops the big for charity cars. Okay. They do. So no deal discount. All right..

NBA is Taking A Stance Against Mental Health Stigma

"Turn our attention back to Jackie McMullan's five part series or mental health in the NBA in the final foam ejaculates the future mental health and efforts league is making racist stigma associated with seeking help. One part is particular struck me guys when Jackie writes about how players will open a helping other players, but here's who won't be the former all-star, whose mental health struggles remain unchecked and untreated his agent frets about his client has begged him to get help. But the player declines saying he can't bring himself to see himself as a bone person agent explains because it doesn't match up with the invincibility of the player that he wants was I don't care who it is, but just in general, that feeling of generation of guys that still aren't opening Danilo Ellie. What do you? How do you have to this is an especially to have battled for all professional athletes because. There is this mythology we build around and we do look at them as invincible invincible, and it's people who don't have own abilities. And so a lot of times they're playing to a persona and they're afraid to seek help, which puts them in a particularly grueling kind of prison. And then if you add on top of that, if they're man of color, because in this -ociety especially being a black man in particular, there's no safe-space. There's no way you can be vulnerable without facing some level of scrutiny or attack. And so you add all those factors and it just is really heartbreaking to see. That's why I'm so glad that so many players are now openly voicing the fact that they struggle with certain things. People in this country feel like if you have money, if you have fame, you have everything figured out. And a lot of times those things bring on more problems and more trauma and more tragedy than most people can possibly fathom or deal with.
