Russian Pundits Demand Alaska and California as 'Reparations'

"I just got to say, everything feels like we're on the brink of destruction. Russia now calling, as I said, for reparations, these pundits over it. Their state media somehow think that the answer is to give Russia Alaska and California and that's a result of the west economic sanctions. You know what I'm going to tell you. This means that the sanctions are working. You know, there are actually hurting. This guy in particular Kremlin host is all upset because he says he's losing his villas on Lake como. He's actually not losing them per se. In fact, I don't think he's been individually sanctioned. I could be wrong on that. But he's not actually losing them. One just knows that they're effectively if he's been sanctioned, freezing those assets, right? I don't know as he's been individually sanctioned. But this is all just, you know, this is rhetoric, right? It's a war of words. And it can escalate into a really dangerous place. So I caution against that, but I would, I would also say that it may be proof that Russia is in so far over its head. As I said, Russia has jumped the shark on this one. There's no easy off ramp for Vladimir Putin because the war world is now shunning him. He is risking becoming the sort of North Korean like figure of Europe.

A Nation Should Not Go to War if It Has Serious and Widespread Domestic Issues

"Kota villa, who passed away unexpectedly, this last summer. He famously used to write and he had a great book called the ruling class. You guys hear that expression. We use it a lot. He came up with it. He was probably one of the clearest foreign policy thinkers in the last 50 years. And he had a belief that a nation should not go to war if you have widespread and serious domestic issues. Let's see. Do we have widespread and serious domestic issues? We can't agree on whether or not a 5 year old should be vaccinated. You think we can agree on whether or not we should send troops to go regulate the eastern border of Ukraine? And you might say Charlie, that's a red herring. Those two things have nothing to do with each other. They actually do. Because if you think we can agree on very simple domestic governance issues, how are we going to agree on troop allocation? And by the way, is national morale high or is it low? These are very simple questions that leaders should be asking. So let's pretend that my whole argument that America has no role right now and actually regulating the eastern board. Let's say that doesn't win over most Americans, which I think it does. But let's pretend that the people in D.C. are convinced that it's their role to go play border cop. Not of the American southern border who cares about the Arizona texture New Mexico border, California border. No about the Ukrainian border, because they're big in the sovereignty, right? Well, then, how about this argument? The argument is that the morale of the country is so low right now, doing big things, 5000 miles away against countries that know how to fight is a really bad idea.

Why Is America Getting Mixed Up in Foreign Wars When We Have a Mess at Home?

"Angela Cote via wrote the book literally called the ruling class. He was also probably one of the wisest foreign policy experts ever. And for those of you listening that want to get a really good understanding of how we should approach American foreign policy, Angela Kota villa was one of the most prudent. One of the most fair and pro American thinkers. And challenge the CIA and the security apparatus unfortunately, he died tragically. I was supposed to spend time with him, actually, he was unable to make it because he got COVID and he died of something else. It was awful. But he had this, the reason I bring up Angela Kota villa and Michael Anton, who's with hillsdale college. That's a great actual reminder that I have to tell you about hillsdale, the wonderful hillsdale college Beacon of the north, Michael Anton, who is not, doesn't necessarily agree with everything that Angela coded via says, but is, in some ways, disciple, I don't want to speak for him, but he would say this better than I could, which is you should not get involved in foreign conflicts if you have extensive domestic problems at home. What are you doing saber rattling across the world? Trying to resolve border disputes when our when our own border is wide open, we have inflation, the country is politically divided and you have a regime that is wildly unpopular. Well, that is exactly what the security apparatus is doing. Partly to distract away from the failed regime of Biden, but also to try and feed the fire of the military industrial complex because look, if you're the military industrial complex, you're looking at Pfizer AstraZeneca Johnson & Johnson, Lockheed Martin Northrop Grumman Boeing, they say, hey, come on, cut us in for some of this. We got no wars going on right now. Front page of the New York Times, on Ukrainian front, warily awaiting the worst. After 8 years of war, grim anticipation of Russian invasion. So now we are being fed a nonstop line that we should care about the Russian Ukrainian border

You understand. I mean, it's up there with men give birth. And it's fair for a biological man. To compete in women's sports, these people are crazy. They're crackpots. Not just bad they're crackpots. That she said have been proved not to work. Is that amazing? I told you, without lying, there's no left. I mean that literally, I swear before my holy God. Kathie Lee Gifford Explains the Problems With the King James Bible

"To Kathie Lee Gifford. She just threw shade at King James. Yes. You know the King James that persecuted the Puritans that came here for religious freedom. That bum, remember, but we say, oh, King James Bible. Kathie Lee, you were just saying that the King James Bible, which was written by 12 committees that it's got some problems. First of all, the people who were transposing it transcribing it, whatever you want to call it from the original Greek and the original Hebrew, had never been to Israel. And so they had no geopolitical or cultural contrasts. You know, it's context. So they said they said, no, I know there are many things that are in the King James that you read it, and you think this feels like 16 O 5, England. Yes, first of all, Jesus did not speak the king's English. Jesus spoke Aramaic Jesus and he spoke Greek. And probably a little bit more because this was a trading post. The villa Morris, the road of the sea, along the Mediterranean, getting ahead of myself too fast Cathy's too fast. Was a major trade route to the north south and down to Africa and north to turkey, and on Asia. And so lots of people came through there. And now the worst thing is that everybody thinks Jesus was had been a Carpenter. Because that's what it says in the king's name. But he was a tekton, which is different. He was a builder. He was a builder. And back then, the only thing you could build with really build with was stone. Jesus was a stone

"Kyle from the first moment I saw you in the news and the video of you defending yourself, you know, I felt like we had something in common. We both grew up in the same neighborhood, you know, kind of a shared story. And you always just wanted to try to help people. That is correct. "villa" Discussed on The Atlas Obscura Podcast

"And bun Ho had another aim in mind too. So wanted to teach traditional values to the younger generation. So at the time, a large proportion of the population was illiterate. So he conveyed traditional values to visitors to the sculptures in dioramas. The park was filled with beautiful elaborate dioramas, representing classics of Chinese literature, like journey to the west, the saga of a Buddhist monk who travels to Central Asia and India, seeking sacred texts. There's also references to Chinese history and religious traditions. Here's savita again. And you will find historical figures and events like the Chinese opium war hero known as commissioner Lin. You also see various depictions of religious teachings such as the Taoist immortals, the Buddhist epic journey to the west, gigantic statues of Confucius and Buddha. And they're all done in painstaking and intricate detail. But the ideal of this park didn't last very long. Because World War II came to Singapore. The brothers fled the elder bun Ho went to Hong Kong and the younger brother Boone parr went back to Burma. The villa they left behind was occupied by Japanese forces. And Boone par never returned to the beautiful home that his brother had built for him. He died in Rangoon in 1944. When the war was over bun how did return to Singapore? Maybe out of grief for his brother, he ordered the villa be fully torn down. And at the same time, he worked to restore the garden and its fantastical statues. And he started adding new ones. But tragedy would visit gun Ho once again. In 1951, the heir to the family fortune, who was born hos eldest son, he died in a plane crash. And there's actually a memorial dedicated to him in the park. It's hard to say whether it was because of all this loss. Or just because he was getting older, but the statue's bun Ho added around this time, they got a lot darker in style. One diorama was called virtues and vices, and on the lower section of this enormous display, people are shown engaged in all kinds of sins from drinking alcohol to cabaret dancing to scenes of nightlife in Shanghai. Meanwhile, on the upper level, there are depictions of people in a community, working together, building bridges and schools. But this is when he added another diorama, showing people answering for their behavior in the afterlife. This would become the park's most infamous attraction. The ten courts. Of hell. The thing cuts off how is a dark tunnel like structure filled with yellow looking judges, scary hell guards and gory punishments, sinus decapitator, they had intestines pulled out, they are tossed into a pool of blood and so on and so forth. It's on one hand quite repulsive, but on the other hand, very strangely attractive. Punishments for all kinds of transgressions are shown in absolutely gruesome detail. Dodge your taxes? You are getting pounded to death with a mallet. Wasting food, sawn in half. Disrespect your elders, your heart is being cut out of your body. My guess is that bun Hal perhaps was contemplating his demise at the time. And he wanted to leave a permanent lasting message to the masses about the consequences of doing good and doing bad. And so on one hand is the virtues and vices, which shows what happens to you in your life in your lifetime. And the tank cuts of health shows you what happens to you in the afterlife after you die. Towards the end of his life, I think one hole was very cognizant of the fact that, you know, at the end of the day, what do you leave behind? You've got to leave a legacy of having done something good. The ten courts of hell were completed in the last few years before Boone Ho's death. And he died in 1954. Now, visitors to the park may have been a little scared or as savita told us mildly traumatized by these gruesome scenes of the ten courts. But it didn't make people turn away from them. If anything, people loved these dioramas. The ten courts became the park's main attraction. Savita told us later that whenever her family had visitors from out of town, they would take them to hopar villa, because it was the place to go in Singapore. In the park kept on growing and changing. After bun Ho's death hopar villa was inherited by his nephew, Ho Chi chai. And chai was also traveling all around the world to market Tiger bomb. And when he returned, he started adding diorama showing the places he'd been. There were scenes from Australia, Italy, Greece. There's even a big replica of the Statue of Liberty. In the 1960s, Singapore was newly independent. But many singaporeans hadn't traveled much outside of Southeast Asia. So these new displays made people really curious about the world. Definitely was an eye opener for many singaporeans. And they drew even more visitors to the park. This was perhaps the golden age of hopar vela. And it said that during its heyday, the park drew around a million visitors a year, and oh Qing chai built on the legacy of his father and his uncle. But in 1971, he died too, and he was only in his late 40s. I hope our villa continued to be run by the family until the mid 1980s. But by then, much of the family and moved away to Hong Kong. And so they decided to bequeath their sculpture garden to the state. And that's when the park began to change. It was turned into something more like an actual theme park, and renamed hope par villa dragon world. The new owners put in a water ride that cut straight through the park's main attraction, the ten quarts of hell. That is what eisenhow remembers the most from his visit to the park as a kid in the mid 90s. And I remember getting quite wet because of the switch because it really opposite near the time. Yeah, I remember the right more than the sculptures in the dioramas and the paint cuts off here. What's more, they also started charging admission for the first time. An unsurprisingly, locals stopped coming, and the park's popularity declined. But today, savita and eisen hope that it will see a revival. The company currently operating the park is restoring statues, adding more historical context. And the water rides are gone. Instead, they've hosted concerts and art events. And they're even working on introducing a kind of glamping experience in the park. They believe that hope par villas incredible visuals still have a lot to offer a curious visitor. Though, to be honest, today, the value might be less moral and more social. The park is extremely Instagram worthy. And I think a quick check on the Internet will prove how Instagram worthy probability is. If you come to the park today, you'll see the old Tiger statues, the classic heroes, and the ten courts of hell, you'll even find that big Statue of Liberty. But you'll also see some new additions. As a companion to the ten chords of hell, you'll be opening a museum. A hell museum. About how different philosophies and religions around the world deal with the concepts of death and the afterlife. In the spirit of the brothers, admission to hope par villa is once again free of charge. The park's new helm museum opened its doors at the end of October. Special thanks to savita koshy up and eyes and tail for telling us the story of hopar villa. Our podcast is a co production of Atlas obscura and witness docs. This episode was produced by. Amanda McGowan. The production.

Yeah. I moved my family halfway across the country to catch it for one K upon my wife's wedding rings sold my guns. Everything to come here for this job to train our 82nd airborne medics. So they fired me after my first day of work. I I and I wish I had some. I don't I don't even know what to say like this. This story is getting more and more depressing. Don't go anywhere, Chris, but I read these stories. I hear them. I read them. I read the messages during the break and Chris were descending into total complete madness. I mean, think about this, a guy like you with your set of life skills, right? You bring something extremely valuable life saving skills to the table to teach to others. In a really tight job market because they're paying people not to work and you get fired for not putting a face diaper on your face where they can provide to you no substantive evidence that will do anything to mitigate this crisis whatsoever. That's where we are right now, Chris, that's where we are as a country right now.

Waltzes is mostly that was ready subtract. Baldwin mark came. I think bowl in the next season. Yeah you know when we were again playing in europe and the call the final following year lost. Did you find his Log started to make his way for we really the following year but you've got those youngins coming through villa of always added good good Baghdadi probably wasn't known as an academy but they were they. We give team players. But they don't always add a good crop in always coming through a little bit loic liverpool. That's very good example. You did search upon you know international replies team but that wasn't because of a lack of ability that was only because the england manager of the scotland manager whatever manage it didn't pick because all you playas could apply international level because you you would all of that level so when i look at switch at saint vincent nationals yet. That would a good team but villa were familly better and have a candle. When i was doing interfere with the only i will. Kendall said village midfield full was the best move forward in a country bogged oil and all that because he'd had absolutely every think it Dance in that seed and the that saturday morning and i think that if you put those four in any team to die would still be as great today. As what was by. Denny's i think we we. We would have changed the way we play dope all midfield possibly The game played now. It's i think. I love it is played out from avakian centered off playing the ball. Intimate failed but they don't play the ball in midfield time that actually already in midfield Yeah so if you watch the way. England play i feel at two jobs have more passengers in any of the play on the pitch for england because the bowl always seems to be going from one side of the pitch stevia unseen that midfield handy away happens because achieve. Just drop off a get behind the ball so he midfield plays into. Why a type of midfield play that we were. I don't think we would have been able to play the game today because.

Win a with johnny dixon team yet in fifty seven fifty eight anyway. Yeah yeah fifty. Seven analysis less time really thought a big prize had been because when you look at the big prizes. I mean that was just phenomenal. Really where they came from. At least when you look avila you think about the history with it forest out that history that was associated to the football club. You so yet. You know from all points of view from a science perspective of aston villa. They should have been waiting mall. I suppose you know 'cause it was it was a big club on obviously still as So you know. The recognition was with by possible. I think as the years wore on. I think we seem to drift out to people's vision and mine's about us davila one when your opinion cook but this is we know the records books weed out within the history show at all. Put it to view. You're the brightest west midland side. That has ever played football since eighteen eighty eight. That's site magnificent. Aston villa you'll achievement with your players has been to win the league and then when the european cope a. Not win the champions league now but it's easier to win the champions league because you don't have to apply four t to lay games to get into that tournaments. You can finish fourth in leg so for me. It's always been more difficult trophy to win the european cup. It's the defining champions of europe. I wouldn't disagree with you paul. You said it the way you know any commentator lot yourself because you understand the game. You'll understand the achievement as apply. Sometimes you you try to avert to knock down a little bit more sympathetic about it. Yeah you know you don't want to over blow the achievement. But i think what you think forty years ago. Good it's you know it's it's it was a great from my point of view everyone the league the season before it was just the icing on the cake rarely to in a way i feel proved to everybody that being champions at eight hundred. Eighty one was no fluke. I go onto the champions league or the european copacetic was dead. You know it was it was it was. It was accomplished with very much. The same place played at eighty eight thousand that season. If anyone saw the acid villa we get to the final. And we'd i wouldn't have thought into many. There's obviously i don't think we did. But it was a chance. There's always a chance blow and we took a chance and everything worked out well. Given the fact that england did add a really good record in in europe in the european cup in particular. Had that stranglehold on it from seventy seven through to knowing say ninety. Two and two scouts is from the same school. Lifted it which that will never ever be repeated. The aston villa were at least the equal to either liverpool or nothing in forest a distinct the with the perception of it was they only won the league in it. One and then. I played the european cope. They had no internationals in the team. They would just assaulted from the middle of the country in birmingham so under developed a really good team or you could argue certainly two teams both in the well. Villas team that went on with his most successful than the first thing in the image of the first team but philanthropy knocking on that door for several seasons. And that some fantastic pliers. Denny's i'd agree. Paul for you know we. We've spoken about before about the seventy six seventy seven team. Will they should have been most successful but the but we never. We never reached a height stop. I felt we would do especially after that season. We mentioned before while about rum building under the team in that model. Did you know what a the difficult things is. When people say i still villa. They wouldn't wear to change yes. It's not like liverpool or nothing good. Exploring the Disney Springs Resort Area: Should You Stay Here?

"We're going to be talking. All about the disney springs resort area. Disney springs resort area. One of four. What i call it the disneyworld neighborhoods. I like to talk about them that way. There's the magic kingdom neighborhood the best one and if you are longtime listener you may remember back in episode eleven quite a while ago we talked about the magic kingdom resort area. So if you want to listen to that and you haven't heard it head on back to episode eleven and then of course there's the epcot resort area and the animal kingdom resort area but today we are focusing on the disney springs resort area. Which is pretty underrated. I think it's i think. It's the most underrated resort area of all because it does not have theme parks associated with it so people just overlook it well. What if you don't like the theme parks or what if you don't know what's actually around there so that's what we're going to talk about today. It's sort of exploring. The disney springs resort area one of our favorite neighborhoods. I think it's grown on us over time. Wouldn't you say that. Oh yeah definitely because you start discovering more and more things you can do. That are not necessarily park related which i mean now with the parks being super weird. That might be a good thing for you to go and try and first. Let's talk about accommodations to start with. Because there are two deluxe disney resort villas properties rate at disney springs. One of them is disney's saratoga springs resort and spa which is quite a nice spa. And the other is disney's old key west resort. Both of these are kind of similar in a sense similar in a sense we prefer saratoga springs personally. Because you know why. I forget why i just know i do. Because it's walkup if you stay in college park it's walkable to disney springs so both of these resorts that's not a plus for me are located on or around lake point of vista. Which is the body of water at disney springs. In case you did not know that also the main street name most of the streets so very popular very popular name buena vista and not is lake boina vista and in this area. You can choose to stay if you wanna stay in. Disney deluxe resort or disney resort. You have to deluxe villas choices and villas are great. Because if you haven't stayed in one we've talked about those a lot. You get kitchens. Basically and laundry and kitchen. That's depending on the size. Both of these resorts are sort of set up like little communities like little subdivisions almost. They're not really hotel. Like in the way that you'd think of other hotels

The gunman ran to his body and rifled through his pockets. He stole money in any other valuables he could find including yilmaz gun after concealing the weapons. The assailant hopped onto a bright red bicycle and fled the scene. During the subsequent investigation authorities watched almost one thousand hours of surveillance footage since the killer's face was covered by a ski mask. They didn't have much hope of identifying him. That is until the video showed the assassin riding his red bike. The image gave them chills in the past. There was an active serial killer in the area known for traveling on a similar red bike known as the canal monster. The murderer had already been caught and convicted. But he'd been released from prison just a year earlier while it seemed that an ex-con who'd already served his time would take such a risk. A senior London police official, Lawrence Taylor, said fans without tickets for the championship final match against Italy on Sunday should stay at home and those in London should not congregate in large groups. He called the city a public health crisis and warned officers will disperse crowds and enforce existing social distancing laws just days before they loosen. The highly transmissible delta variant, first identified in India has caused a significant spike in coronavirus cases across the UK Particularly in London's northwest site of England's national soccer stadium. The crowd inside may be allowed to almost reach the full 90,000 capacity on Sunday to watch the end of this hugely popular European soccer tournament that was postponed last year due to the pandemic. Dwight McNeil from Burnley Rob a little bit of quality from the white positions to feed in to play with the real issues McGee. Nobody helps to feed that proven Stryker if you get him about a million and. Seven assists for Norwich City goals. Seven assists is the joint fourth best in the primarily twenty three years of age, and he's been a little bit hot and cold, grunted, but a plan I think given another chance to in a club like. Villa could do all right so I wanted to Athens unproven primarily plays. It's GONNA kill one mournfully baseline. Get your reaction will move. On to narrate. No season-long Lung. Christian Pulisic. It's interesting to see it. They try to play their way Amazon any money. They brought loans in I. Think in January. They spent no money I'm trying to do. With with good young players, there's no question they're gonNA. Have a job keeping over some of that players like you said some of those Phillip Are You. Do you do have to spend some money to stay in this division? An allude to the numbers roll over the last three years their netspend. They've made money. There are surplus about fifty million dollars. Good enough in abundance team to survive in the premier league so that's. They would have made lot money my friend. Payments going forward now they they should have played the huge debts that I know that they had come into this season. With the money that they've made haven't spent much of it, and I guess I'd MoD the way they've tried to do it while they've been blocked up part the bus they've tried to be if we've got some good days. And some some good results, good performances and some outstanding results, but hasn't been good enough and. Yeah I think that's what they're going gonNA. Look for next season. "Welcome into the ESPN FC studios this Monday edition of the show longtime here in studio on the Mona no, Steve Nichol Sebastian sell us, are we will be joined throughout the show as well by our good friend, wrath Han Eckstein someone of I should say high class tape. Oh, really? Oh, yeah. Oklahoma meals in Russia with, with Ravitz fitting that we have in for today's show because it was the richest match in all of football. The promotion playoff, Aston Villa, a beating Darby county, AMRO Ghazi John McGinn the goal spores for villa Martin. Waghorn gets one that late for Darby county. Even see outmuscle fill up shot, villa. But in the end, it's Aston Villa that earns promotion the last spot in next year's from your leap. All right. C villa. Pretty prohibitive, favourite going into this one close matches at a fair just result for you. I think she'll I think the best team overall, Darby Darby really for me didn't come alive until the clothing stays the wait till the to know again. They did it against Leeds and one of the playoff games, and the came from you can't expect to keep doing and for me. Yes, I villa more stable site. I think not just an appeal, but June course of the season, they've been better overall Allah, what I saw from both teams is the nerves of what the moment was all about. Because we didn't really see the best of either of our Darby for that matter, villa, there were moments in which perhaps, they could have been cleaner with the ball and made it a lot more comfortable for them towards the end. And you found that they're recounting simply because of the desperation of having to do something, the last twenty twenty five minutes or so they're pushing forward disorganized. They just trying to get something into the bugs see what happens they get a goal out of that. And from then on, was hanging on and I mean, barely hanging on to the point to where you're saying kind of gets a goal here and they go into extra-time this is this is a whole different story, but did enough and that's all they care about they'll the Premier League next year. We'll see you guys later, our last image villain. The Premier Li is quite pathetic. So years. They were relegated mid April this huge fan base. Rich ownership. You think they can stay up next season. If they don't add to this, starting live, never mind, the squad then they were sway back. Don't listen, the truth is, as they have pretty much championship players playing in the championship who are going to go into the Premier League. And if they stick with that it's not going to be enough, people keep throwing wolves around wolves had Premier League players playing in the championship. That's the best way for me to describe it. So they have to go out and spend, and if these spend spend wisely so they have to get those two things to into this site. Otherwise, they will come straight, by the thing that I think was important here from us Avila's perspective was the momentum that they generated late in the season to get into this playoff position. And then carrying on that momentum onto here, there were moments in which villa essentially had to win or ELLs, and they did that for a couple of months straight, and they haven't loss against. We're, we're talking since March..
