Viggo Mortensen on new movie 'Falling'

"This is popcorn when we talk about. What's out there at the movies. There's a movie out there now. Called falling vigo mortenson. My guest is starring in it with this time in this movie falling. He also directs. It's the first time it's his feature directing debut and it's in many ways at top story but it's vigo to me. It's him saying. I'm going to take this on and see what happens. And what happens is so incredibly moving so figo. Welcome good to have you. Thanks is wonderful to see again. What i can't say. What attracted you to this because you wrote. This is something that came out of your own head and it feels very personal to me. But i don't know just help personnel. This it is personal but it's also I mean it's largely a fiction fictional family but the foundation of it is feelings. I have for my mother especially but by connection to my father as well into my childhood and adolescence so there are elements of truth. As far as i remember an memory subjected that after do with my upbringing and even with the aspect of dementia that that's dealt within the story. I've had a lot of experience with that. Both my parents stepfather grandparents. I've seen it up close in a caregiver. And it's something i wanted to explore. I wanted to explore the limits if there are any communication especially with people that you have a hard time communicating with other. I wanted to just more than anything asks questions. Rather than give answers. Ask myself questions and maybe half the audience are the people that you can't communicate with our the people. Obviously there are people that want to communicate with are there. People don't deserve to be communicated with or listen to i personally. Don't think so. But as person makes their own decision about that. It's i wanted to look fine. I wanted to explore the idea of empathy of communication and closer. We've gotten to the release of this movie. Which is february fifth. Us canada unexpectedly an away. Unfortunately this movie and the polarization the conflicts with this family that it deals with problems of communication are more timely than ever. Well i mean we come in the way i see admit point even low. Your movie is there's a great many flashbacks. And i should just say up front. That basically you're playing a gay man with a father who is suddenly hit by the ravages of dementia. It may even early onset and yet through the flashbacks in what we say we see. This man has always been difficult. He's been more than a handful. You know he's a racist in him. There's a person who can be a bowling and yet through the flashbacks to we see that he's capable of love. He's hard to take and yet we feel that we haven't seen except toward the end of the movie. What it was like when your character decides. I'm not gonna play at his wet. I'm going to try to give something. That is empathetic rather than something. That's hostile john. Is that yard. You're in sub it in your own life when you dealt with now in. My father wasn't anywhere near as difficult to deal with. We had better communication than john willis do in this story though sunan father but but my father was a man of his generation. He was not american use denmark but he was raised on a farm born during the depression went through the german occupation during world. War two ran away from home when he was fourteen You know self taught person who then eventually after he married. My mother moved the united states. He somehow got into business. School finished it in half the time by doing night courses nine. Just a determined person. Very self reliant. But like many men of that generation he was kind of even in his gentlest moments. A my way or the highway kind of guy. And that's just the way it was. And then you didn't adapt to changing times that well either the sixties the seventies is like what the hell's going on from their point of view. Why can't things just be the way they should be in. Men and women are women all that stuff and so there was a bit of that on my dad but but he was nowhere near as it was not as much of a conflict as you as i depicted in the movie. It's a fiction as i say this story. Even those became a father son story a basically the moral conscience to like the the the the fulcrum emotionally morally of the story really is is the mother for me. Is gwen by hannah. Gross the inspiration and the reason that they argue a lot. You know both father and son and also father and daughter. My sister played by laura. Linney the bone of contention. Is gwen a lot. So that was an important role and i. I guess that character resembles my mother and my relationship with that character in in the movie is more like my relationship with my mother than than the relationship with the father's like my own father. There's there's a lot of you that i see in this character in terms of how you play it and also how you directed wrote it which is nature of you know we see this man. He grew up in loved the farm. He loved it. He related to the horses to the answers like you. you know. there's something about nature where the best of him somehow is shown when he's with these animals he can't seem to rang. The embassy has them to is actual family which people in general yeah. It's just kind of tragic when it is said it is said and you know it's no accident that the first third of the movie threaded through it is this sequence that has to do with the duck the sequence of events right from seeing it shooting it bathing when it's sleeping with plucking cooking it and then finally you know eating it sharing it that way. let's that john that grows up to be your character of sleep. Was the dead duck. He lets him do that. He does some well. Yeah that whole thing. The story was away to introduce among things. What you're talking about the relationship that that family has with nature expos with life and death and all that would nature you. You all grow up for time on on a farm. I grew up in part. I bo bo cities and farms. I mean i learned to ride horses. When i was really little when i when i could walk and And my dad was someone who was raised on a farm And he introduced me and my brothers at the earliest possible age to campaign to know how to make a fire to forests and rivers and animals and fishing and hunting. And all those things. So i was very much part of my

Are They Really Going To Ban Stablecoins?

"So are they really gonna bend stable coins. This seems to be one of the biggest news stories out there right now. You know when something. He's a maybe that is something that really gets twit crypto with to go in a kind say crypto twitter going. Because when is maybe we all started debating the probability of it happening. And that's natural. I suppose because as soon as we know what's going to happen in the future then we make like investing decisions and positions that rhymes allows us to get ahead of the curve. So we wanna know how to position ourselves ahead of the curve. And if it's going to happen we can do that. So in this case. I'll start off with a tweet from congresswoman rashida web t. l. a. You pronounce that so you want to get as close to the primary source possible. I was just thinking about this amigo in journalism. You call primary source. But i suppose in crypto that's like the base layer lay zero so it's at the blockchain layer so this is the tweet from the horse's mouth. There's another way you'd say so the the tweet l. post in the notes so here he goes. It says preventing cryptocurrency providers from repeating the crimes against low and moderate income residents of cola. Traditional big banks have is critically important. That's why i'm proud to announce the hashtag stable act with two of the representatives. Never mind the names. Governors them links. So what i'd like to know. Straightway by the way first thing. I'd like to know is Specifically what is meant by crimes against low and moderate income residents of course so of color talk about people in united states. who are people of color. Get that so other crimes though. We're talking about you know declining bank accounts like when the replied full by people have colorized us. Well if that's the case if we are talking about when a person of color applies for bank account and gets declined because there were president of the crypto communities already solved that problem right. People of color can download in a theory. Will it do some online work and then get paid in die stable coins. Da so in that scenario. There's no possibility of discrimination because creating a theory will it is free and is permission list and die a stable coin which is protected from volatility. So that's that a die is also not ted the to dulles it's backed by a theory of another permission this asset so the floor is in the first few words of this tweet that says preventing cryptocurrency providers ding ding ding. So reheat. a main will be aware that stable coins like di do not have centralized providers behind them so these stable coins these owned chain stable coins their generated on public network without requiring permission from anyone. And because there's no personal information required. It doesn't matter what color you cola isn't even a consideration because it doesn't matter it's a totally lit fed flare so tony fair and level playing field for everybody. So there's your solution right net now before anyone roasts onto it's about transaction fees a theory him being discriminatory to low and moderate income. People i hear you so us instead. Download the one that wallet. They'll provide you with a free account. And then you can use any one of a dozen collateralized stable coins e else where transactions are free. so that's not bad back to the tweet then links to T. l. a. I don't house dot gov which is the greater detail about this particular piece of legislation. They call it they call it the stable act right. Which is kind of ironic. Isn't it but stands for stable coin tethering and bank licensing enforcement. Now that's clearly been shoehorned into the acronym stable so they might not be. What is actually says. Is that this week. These congress people got together with the chairman of the task force for financial to l. d. blah blah blah and introduce these stable act which is which would protect consumers from the risks imposed by imagining digital payment instruments such as facebook's libra which is now called diem and they will coins current offered in the market by regulating their issuance and related commercial activities. It then says digital currencies who value is permanently pegged to or stabilized against a traditional currency like the dollar pose new regulatory challenges while also representing a growing source of market liquidity and credit risk. So that's that's the first paragraph talking about here in a press. Release on this website. So again this is aimed squarely acc- stable coins data pegged to dollar reserves it specifically says pegged stabilized against traditional conventional currency reserves. I just described above with regards to like the algorithm mickley stabilized coins that are backed by commission assets like theory more. Well that's a technological solution to this problem. Rather nate legislative one and plus. This technology already exists right now today. Ready to use right after you finish listening to this podcast. But as ever since since behavior always flows from identity. If you are a regulator will your primary purpose is to regulate not solve problems no matter how many times you say. Oh we're actually trying to solve problems note. If you're a regulator your primary purpose is to regulate not solve problems otherwise you'd call yourself a problem sold and that's why you'd be accountable for the outcome of your work would be solutions to problems. But it isn't the outcome of the work that you do as a regulator is regulation so that we got. You have to ask that question though. What would rashid do if she say. Listen to this podcast. When and investigated the tools of his mentioned and discovered that they can accomplish the exact goal. They're aiming to achieve well at that point. Would this draft law than be put in the been and be labeled job done or would it create a fear. They accept that this pro has already been sold. They lose their peppis so discovering. How effective those unchain stable coin solutions May create the snowball of fear along the lines of olga. If these innovators really have sold this problem with technology what are the problems that they solved that. We're supposed to be tasked with solving that also asked like w- what if they're able to solve all the problems with technology. Then what would we do with ourselves as regulators so the end of the day politicians and regulators the human beings but the same fears and emotions and thoughts as the rest of us. So i can't help but look at it from that point of view as well put back to the specific gripes. That rashida has britain. would these stable coins. This often hear about guaranteeing customer deposits. Well with own chain stable coins. The reserves a completely transparent and auditable the stable coins themselves that issued by smart contracts and backed by more collateral than traditionally pick stable coins like tether by eos book. If i ever need. I've got the vigor system platform open right this minute and if i look it the vegas stable coin right this minute. The collateral ratio eat a hundred and fifty percent so wild pig stable coins. Like the us. Dc jimmy dolla. They all have one does worth of cash for every one dollar stable coin. These unchain stable claims like vega will has one dollars fifty of collateral backing everyone stable coin and more than that if a person of color where paid in viggo for some wag that they did well the past them would be zero collateral risk. That's all taken care of behind the scenes by the insurers of the protocol level and so the de the holder of the vega has absolutely no knowledge whatsoever this going on and neither do the insurers have any knowledge of the and using the stable coins. That unearth Or not doesn't matter that don't care right that is providing the insurance system and engaging with the protocol and that's the end of it that's their relationship the relationship with the protocol not the uses that don't care about the as long as they play by the rules which you have to anyway so those protections are built right in. It's not even a consideration right. Discrimination based on skin color is completely impossible at the protocol level if someone decides not to hire someone for a job say because the applicant is a person of color will obsolete nothing to do the way money works. That's a whole separate problem that needs addressing a whole separate conversation beyond the scope of this particular podcast so whether the law gets passed in this this stable at low whether he gets passed in the us or not. i personally would much rather people of color. Just use the on table coins anyway right. Just do that anyway. If you listen to this and you are coa go check out things like meta mask and the die. Stable coin for theory amiss. Da and then if you wanna look at the us equivalent look out for the one bat. Wallet and the vega stable coin his v. i. g. o.

"That kinda turns away a lot of god's people ought to be perfectly honest he calls it biblical justice. It it comes directly out of the bible. It comes directly out of the bible. So whatever term you want to use for god gives us an edict to take care of his people and if they're oppressed if they're poor if it's the widow if it's the foulest all we're required to take care of those things and in our current society they look a little different or a lot different than they did back then so we can't look at it as we only do this for this little part. We've grown we've developed as a world in so we have to begin to look at it from that perspective. What are the needs of the poor. What are the needs of the oppressed and we as a church. We see them but we think oh. My job is just to help people get saved. Okay after they get saved then what if we don't help help them to grow. And to thrive viggo right back out into the world. And then what have you done. That's right that's exactly right so that leads into the next. The next question is what can christian women do in an effort to help. Churches begin to realize that we need to be about our father's business in that is part of that is social justice. Right it is. It is in so from the very onset. There has to be dialogue. There has to be conversation and unfortunately it's been taboo. It's been taboo in in society at large in. It's been taboo in the churches as well. We're supposed to be the model. So the love of crisis in me. So i should be able to have a conversation with you in love and if we can do that then we can begin to see things from each other's perspective so instead of avoiding it we have the conversation and we talk about it because if we look at it.

"Go to another study one more review study this out of the journal current ageing science, December two thousand thirteen the researchers looked at the body of research out there on creating and seniors without exercise. They wanted to see what? Happens when seniors take creatine and don't exercise, so I'm quoting here. Creatine supplementation without associated resistance training seems to enhance muscular strength, power and endurance increase lean body mass for those that don't know what that is. They're talking about muscle and improve the functional capacity of the elderly Viggo want to talk about how it supports bone health as well. And then they finish with this creating supplementation without training in the elderly could potentially delay atrophy of muscle and improve endurance and strength. So here again, we see bottom line preteen is very very effective, Pat when you think about it this almost sounds too good to be true. Right. But it is true. Hundreds and hundreds of human studies backup where we're talking about. You're gonna love the benefits you get with this ever strong formula. Now listeners can only get ever strong this clinically tested creatine blend from purity products. Right. Oh, absolutely. I know it combines the creating with the vitamin d. The coffee berry the fruit. XP boron is also a great value to I know, we have a free bottle today. But if you wanted to buy all of these things separately, it would cost a small fortune, wouldn't it? Oh, absolutely. I mean, if you went out and bought the create pure creatine, that's it purest finest creatine from Europe. And then you went out and bought a separate antioxidant formula and a separate joint formula and.

"Radio sixty six. And we're back final hour before Evan Roberts takes over at ten o'clock. We've got Mr Brian Rascon at the controls in the co pilots chair and in just a little bit. Brian Costello will join us talk about the jets, and obviously they're coaching hire. Which is I I can't even say somewhat controversial. It's very controversial. And I would say that the the fans will be loaded for bear on Monday. When Mr. gaze is announced at his press conference as the head coach of the NYJ's, so we'll get into that in a little bit. While we're waiting for our phones to populate at eight seven seven three three seven six six six six couple of little items. We talk about movies a lot. And in this time when you really don't have great basketball being played in New York and hockey with the Rangers weeknights which used to be filled with baseball not happening. The to other forms of entertainment and movies. And I saw a movie the other night that I thought was great, and it is a controversial movie. And I can't understand why I watched it. And I thought oh, this is terrific. Where's this movie? But I didn't know anything about it. When I came into other than it had won a Golden Globe award and it had a couple of actors. I really like Mahershala Ali and. Another actor who I really really enjoy and. It was it's called the green book. Now, the the story they didn't know anything about it came out November story was there was a black concert pianist in one thousand nine hundred sixty two by the name of Don, Shirley. He lived above Carnegie Hall in a very palatial apartment with all sorts of art wonderful, the trappings of luxury very very well off. And he's going to tour the south and this is nineteen sixty two. So the green book is a book that was written. The tells black people where they could stay in the south and be safe as opposed to trying to get into another hotel and be rejected or beaten up for. You know, the story. So he knows that he's going to encounter problems touring the south no matter how distinguished and educated and good he is because of his color. So he endeavors to hire a driver slash bodyguard for the journey. And he winds up hiring this guy from the Bronx South Bronx. Who was a bouncer at the Copacabana. And this is based on a true story. And he he's a big hit a couple of black plumbers in his house and his wife gives the plumbers a glass of water. While they're working and leaves the classes in the sink, and when he comes out and sees that they've used it. He takes the glasses and throws them away in the garbage. That's the kind of guy. He is. Here's realize it though, he just thinks way it is. So bottom line is he accepts the job. And there's certainly a lot of consternation as to whether he should take it and consternation is whether he should be hired. Because of his his position on racial relations. So it turns into a buddy movie, and the acting is so good. I mean, Viggo Mortenson is the the Bronx guy, and I didn't even recognize him. He's gained like fifty pounds for the role is Harris slicked back as a look like Viggo Mortensen at all. And he drives him around. He goes to Pittsburgh first. And then they go south and he's crew talking guy. Every other words out of his mouth is a swear word, and Don Shirley is refined and dignified and intelligent and everything that he's not, and it's sort of a buddy road movie where they learn from each other where Mortenson supplies the muscle. And it helps Shirley out of a few real bad jams that you would think a black person in the south would get into back in that day and age no matter how good they were. And he bills Mortenson out of a bunch of situations that his talion Bronx upbringing gets him into. And in the end, they become friends, and they understand each other. And they understand each other's way of life, and it's very inspiring movie. And it's directed by Peter Farrelly who is one of the fairly brothers. Who did shallow Hal and dumb and dumber movies? I wasn't big fans of. But I thought he did a great job. And after the film comes out, there's all human cry from Don Shirley's family. Oh, this isn't right. This isn't right. That's not right. It's it's it's a white savior movie. And it's not it's two guys who get to know each other and gets a look past color and look past education and all of that. And appreciate what they have in each other. And on that level of works. So well, and it doesn't gloss over the racism in the south or even in the north back then and today still it doesn't gloss over any of that. It's so good and anybody who's seen it who who didn't come in with prejudice. And with expectations loves it. I mean, rotten tomatoes. It's getting a pluses. I mean, everybody's in yet. There's this hue and cry in a campaign to disparage this movie, and I would just say go into it with an open mind, watch it and see if you don't think it's as good as I thought it's the best movie I've seen in a long time. And I was just so shocked that so many people are dead set against it. When even if any picture that's a bio pic that is based on a true story is never going to get every detail. Right. No matter how diligent their efforts are. But I. I thought they really tried. And I thought they really did a good job in according to the writer, one of the co writers who is the son of the Bronx driver. He had interviews with Don, Shirley and with his dad, and you know, basically corroborated all the information that they got. Anyway, let's move on Anthony and south Jersey's with us. You're on the fan. Anthony. I don't which good. Tony. A couple of points about the jets. Okay. The guy you just had on one hundred percent, right? That was Puglia mcalinden choice. But let me tell you something about the giant problem. With jets is the ownership because. Eight hundred million dollars is probably way to three billion dollars. That's the concern. What he Johnson? I don't think these people people. I know they're not football people don't even know anything about football. So that's why they have to hire a guy to. Hi, guys, more guys. They have no idea. How many owners let me ask you this. How many owners are football guys Jerry Jones? Okay. You know, you can take a couple of other owners maybe who came up through the ranks. But most of them are not football is they're businessmen who have a lot of money. You can afford to buy a team. Right. I understand that. But I think of all what he's probably the least knowledgeable. Okay. I move onto that. Secondly of all us talk about the jets. The jets quarterback really think doll. Definitely the future or the jets. I mean when you wanna put them would y'all rename it. Nobody's doing that. But but he is the guy if you've watched him play is the guy that gives you hope that you look at say, he's got he's got talent. He's got a lot of things going for him that I think he can be the franchise guy is he now. No. I mean, you know, look at his numbers you barely completed fifty percent of his passes. But you watched him in games. And you saw what he could do on the move. You saw his smarts is cool. Everything about him. Makes you think and he was by most people's choice. The number one quarterback in the draft of the Mayfield might be better. But. And you know, you've seen encouraging signs, and he's a guy that you want to build around. All right. We're gonna take a break. And then Brian Costello with his informed opinions about the jets they're coach their quarterbacks. Everything jets next..

Movie Review: “Green Book”

"Which I said, let's see I'm looking up here. I said I watched green book, and it was about a white racist who teaches a black guy how to be more black and how we'd all be better off racists in the victims of racism, just got along. Better your enjoyment of the film will likely depend on your receptiveness that message. And I literally thought I think I'm only my leagues agitating. When I literally thought I was just stating the text of the film like that. That is what I thought the movie was trying to. Say a lot of people were like criticizing me being like, you know. That's super harsh. Dave. And I'm like that is what the movie is like it's Viggo Mortensen plays a racist. There. Mercia Lally plays a black pianist going through Jim crow, south touring and and being subject to racism and the to kind of teach each other. Better understanding if humanity, and I think Mark Harris did a great job of running down like what's wrong with movies like green book, which they feel like they are out of I dunno late eighties early nineties. Right. This kind of by this. This type driving. Exactly, right. The like driving miss daisy. Both sides have something to contribute to the conversation. Like, oh, like like, look at how much we all have to learn from each other. You know, like. I'm sure I can imagine somebody who was big in Hollywood in that period. Looks at this way. Now now, the white guys driving him that's the movie, I know. And so it's not I mean, it's certainly I can understand why people find it to be an offensive film. And in fact, the the relatives of Dr Don Shirley have since come out and publicly denounced the movie, they have said like this movie contained they called it. A symphony of lies is what they said face like everything about the movie is that it is a gross misrepresentation of their relationship because like a big part of the movies about Dr Don, Shirley, the pianist and how he's like so disconnected with his family. And and he doesn't like he feels like a like an outsider to his own race. And it's it's Viggo Mortensen 's mildly racist character that helps them to reconnect with his like, it's all this stuff and his. The real life on Shirley families like well that never happened. None of that was true. But at least it was a symphony of lives. That's correct. The poster will say a symphony. No, I don't I don't know if they're gonna use that poco, Jeff. But in any case, I mean, yeah, it's so it's not even really that accurate and the story as it just it just feels like it's from a different era. Feels like we don't really need this kind of story anymore. We have other choices today about you know, how we've you these types. I mean. Yeah. There's there's a more diverse slate of filmmakers behind the camera. These days that can tell stories like this and from a different and more interesting perspective. So poignant views like, you know, more nuance point of us. I will say when I first saw the trailer for this. And I was like oh, my Herschel eilly. That's so that's interesting. This looks cool Vigo Mortenson and then Peter Farrelly. And I remember we talked about project greenlight a couple years ago. I will never forget how Peter fairly treated producer EFI Brown. And like, you know, she's a really well known and very prolific. Black producer. Yeah. And she's made a lot of stuff and Peter fairly would not show her any any instance of like respect or like there's just like a like subtle racism going on there.

Pope Faces Crisis of Credibility Over Coverup Accusations

"Pope Francis, is now squarely in the center of, the still unfolding clergy sex abuse crisis in the Catholic church a former Vatican embassador to the US archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano says. The pope covered up sexual misconduct by former Washington DC archbishop. Theodore mckarrick called on the pope to resign here with us now, to, talk, about. These developments is NPR religion correspondent Tom gjelten hey Tom also so this. Charge came in a. Pretty extraordinary eleven page letter from vegan? No, released this weekend whatever mation does. He claim, to have well, Vigano is a longtime Vatican insider he was as you say the Vatican embassador to. The United States from two thousand eleven to. Two thousand sixteen so he, has certainly had access the information most of his allegations concern former archbishop McCarrick cardinal McCarrick until he was forced to give up that title this summer Vigano says, there was knowledge of mechanics misconduct years ago. That it was brought to the attention of. The Vatican now we should point out that. He does not claim there, is knowledge of McCarrick abusing a minor with that was the charge that, actually led to his resignation they can, always talking largely about sexual misconduct with seminarians he says then Pope Benedict forbid McCarrick from celebrating mass or giving lectures he claims. That Francis then reverse those punishments which is why he should. Resign now there are two problems with this one we haven't yet. Seen, any, evidence. Of those sanctions being imposed on McCarrick too we also know that McCarrick. Continued to do those. Things he was supposedly forbidden to do? Even, when Benedict was still pope and. How pope, Francis reacted to, this letter claiming there was this cover up well on the plane this weekend coming. Back from Ireland he's he basically refused to. Talk about it he said, read the statement and make your own judgment it's not clear what he meant by that Exactly denying no. But he may be saying consider the source we know that archbishop figure no is a longtime critic of pope Francis his letter is very strident inflammatory phrased very much in. Culture war terms there's actually some people in the Vatican say he has a reputation for being a troublemaker. So maybe the pope is just saying take this with. A grain, of salt now these charges Vigano makes go back several years. But he released this letter while the pope, was on this high profile trip. To, Ireland how do you think the timing. Was significant here was it deliberate well the reason that that trip was so. High profile is because of course it came in the. Midst of this clergy abuse crisis now figure knows critics suspect that he is was using this crisis to leverage his longstanding anti Francis campaign on the other hand it. Is important to note that his. Charges, are directly related to the sex abuse. Crisis within, the Catholic leadership there are basically two theories. Of the root cause of this crisis Francis And his allies say it's clerical, ISM, by which they mean too, much deference to. The clergy putting the clergy, on a pedestal vis-a-vis the laity they say. That Tennessee has led to. Impunity for priests and bishops the other argument. Which is one subscribed to by Viggo is that this has everything to do with homosexuality. There's been too much accommodation of homosexuals, within the church we should also point. Out, that researchers have really challenged that idea that, there's any connection between child abuse and sexual orientation and how unprecedented wise this letter in. The first place or a really this whole moment? Right now for? The, Catholic church the entire moment is unprecedented I mean we have an expo Benedict resigned first time in six hundred years we have. Francis, being elected the first pope from the south some people say there's a civil war going on in. The Catholic church there, have been so worse before but this is a big
