"Today I am podcasting with a licensed marriage and family therapist who I've had the pleasure speaking to on the pod before but of course we have so much more to dive into. She has her own. Practice called mindful marriage and family therapy where she treats individuals couples and families. She also runs retreats around the world. Leads relationship workshops in countless cities and is a go to source for advice for millennial mothers and so so much more. Please welcome back to the podcast Vienna Farren. Hi Hi how are you an crates? How're you you know what I am? Also you know. It always depends on the day to day. I'm feeling okay today. I'm feeling okay day-by-day. Today's an okay day. Okay so last time you're on the PODCAST. We spoke about a lot about boundaries which is a topic. I find super important to discuss an instance. It was around the holidays. We kinda talked a lot about setting boundaries with family but I wanted to talk about kind of setting boundaries of relationships. Because will this time. I'm in one. It was so funny because I literally said at the end of our last podcast. I hope I'm in a relationship next time we speak so I could dig more into relationships so here. We are areas selfish. We definitely need to do one with Jason Too. Because I would love to do like a couple of one. He was going to ask him to jump on today but he's got a few phone calls so he couldn't make it but just a couple of questions for you. What are some of the mistakes people make when getting into new relationship and setting boundaries? I mean I think probably in the beginning parts of relationships were were generally more week in our boundaries than we are rigid right. So you know when we talk about boundaries and maybe we talked about this on the Last podcast but you know therapists news. The terminology rigid porous and healthy. When we're talking about boundaries and and so I'd say generally in the beginning parts of relationships we are pretty porous Or or were we already have established healthy boundaries in motion. And so what that means is that the the openings are there we sort of do everything in our power to make sure that this relationship is going to last. We make sure that everything happens to be okay in the beginning of a relationship the things that we would ask for if we were further along we might ask for. We become very much in our heads about making sure that we're presenting ourselves in a way that the other person wants to be around and so a lot of times when we think about boundaries. If there's something that's being asked there's an agreement. There's an expectation. There's something that's being put out into the world that we often believe. The other person is in going to want to deal with and isn't going to want to be around us if we ask for something that we think is a little bit outside of There's like intro bubble of acceptable in the beginning of a relationship. So I do think that it. At the start point we are generally porous when it comes to honoring what it is that we need to make sure that we're not abandoning ourselves relationship. Yeah absolutely look what are some good questions to ask and boundaries to set up for yourself when you do head into a new relationship. I think it's what our work is to become observers of ourselves and to see when we are exiting ourselves in order to maintain a relationship and so I love this thought of like what am I trading right now in order to keep attachment in order to keep connection and when we can start to observe ourselves in that space like am. I saying. Something's okay when it's not really okay. Am I not saying something? A not okay when it is like how am I shutting down in my communication. We tend as human beings we tend to trade in our authenticity for connection right. It means that we stepped outside of what is honorable to us in order to a relationship in order to be quote unquote loved or chosen or wanted and so I think that that prompt is a really powerful line. It's like am I trading something right now in order to keep us but is there something that I'm muting within myself that I that I would actually want to say and when we when we can start to ask questions in dive in a little bit deeper? I think we'll get transparent with ourselves and hopefully we can be honest with ourselves and night Manipulative but if we are honest and transparent with ourselves. We're probably going to gain a little bit of clarity here and in knowing where it is headed. This part is really important. Obviously as a marriage and family therapist talk a lot about family systems and our origin stories. Right like how we learn how to interact with other people that is generated from growing up in a family system and so as children we are often trading authenticity for attachment. We just WANNA be loved. We just want to be chosen. We just WANNA be safe. We just WANNA be secure. But do I need to do in order to get that from you mom or you that or whomever and so a lot of times? That comes along in our romantic relationships. We are programmed and condition to abandon ourselves sometimes in order to have love or quote unquote love. What we think what we deem love to be Maybe that's attention. That's some form of affection. Maybe that's someone who just wants to see us. Yeah that's so true I I sometimes can can see like my childlike behavior coming through in relationships like totally totally based on how I used to deal with it like for in my family like growing up. And it's so interesting because I mean your your past in your family. It really influences the person who you are obviously and how you act and so if you're getting into a new relationship what are some of the things you should ask Or look out for us so that you can understand where the other person came from. Yeah you know. Obviously we're all like. When is it too soon to dive into some of these? I was GONNA ask that too. Yeah it's like maybe it's you're not doing a full deep dive on a first or second date but I do think we can generally feel into a person in see how open they are. You know people will talk to you a little bit about growing up. And you know their families systems or they'll be able to relate something or Show to you that they have in some form of awareness just in the way that they speak about other human beings you know how they speak about how they handle themselves you know their reactivity and and so I think we're paying attention. We can sense whether or not a person is willing to to go there and I think I think really. For quality relationships it requires self and relational awareness and as those questions at some point right. That doesn't have to be too far in by. I think if you have two people who are you know fairly self aware or at least willing to explore than. It's not out of the question to start asking some of those questions you know in the first few dates around like what was it like growing up or what. What is the dynamic like with your family now or in those types of things are not super intrusive by you will sense if a person you know closes down my family's perfect or like up. Yeah no like no big deal you just sort of moves on frenette quite quickly So it does take practice of going into that space. The more than we do it with ourselves. The more we will be able to recognize it in another person like the more that we pract if this process of going inwards with ourselves and becoming introspective and curious and challenging ourselves than the more. We're going to be able to sit out in someone else. I remember my process like when I was dating and.

"Got it. He's not up K. I was trying to come up with the last time. Brent took a shot joke but it just didn't fully forum in time and so then I fell apart even further because then I didn't say something else. Okay so I don't know I don't know what to do in this new brave new world. I got an important question for you though. What's that is your brand the armor than the go-to brand for Vienna's passages or one of those weird off. Brand Vienna sausages. No I went. I went classic armor. I knew that that is the hot dog. Armor hotdogs remember those commercials from back in the day. Well this isn't exactly how these are like you know how like hotdogs are toaster. Lebron's Lipson assholes. This is what falls under the grinder hotdog. Stay kind of thing. So it's it's It Certainly smells like that. So before we get into what we're about to try to give the kids at home a little bit on the Vienna sausage. This is from wikipedia so we did a lottery search here. Vienna sausage Otherwise known in German as a Venus version is a thin parboiled sausage traditionally made pork and beef and a casing of ship sheep's intestine Then given a low temperature smoking. The work meaner instrument for Vietnamese in Austria. So this is a sausage sausage that anyone gets an encased meat Boy So here. In North America after having been brought to you North America by European immigrants the Vienna sausage came to mean only smaller and much shorter smoked and canned wieners. Rather than link sausage beginning about nineteen three however they have no federal standards of identity Yes they do the armor. I think that's I think we need to update this PD. Pitch a North American sausages are made similarly to pork wieners. Finally ground to a paste. Consistency makes with Salt and spices such close coriander nutmeg onion powder and finely ground dry red pepper. I smells like so much more chemicals than it does all of that. It depends on what you get. Because there's the original which is my go-to but there is smoked. There's chicken there is barbecue flavored They're spicy and actually the spicy is really good. If you can find him they're harder to find but You do have some some choices out there now. There are people that like the goalies brand that liberties brand. But I'm a I'm an armor fan myself like pictures of Anna sausages from across the world and across the world. They look delicious. They look like You know traditional sausages. You might buy it. A butcher knife boomer like their little longer and harder like a yeah like a role And then there's a picture from North America and it's it's a big old cannock these some places. If they're they're they're dried they call him. Hunter sticks. Actually I've seen hunter sticks so you know the have you also seen the giant can and that they make that is like the INS. It's just the chopped up pieces because if it's too much work for you to chop it up to put into whatever you're making which they are good and Macaroni Lisa. Stop making those. She's not even speaking. She just has. This disgust didn't know how discussing to get more disgusting. They have armor Vienna Sausage Bourbon Barbecue flavored sauce. Like that sounds like vomit. Yeah Yeah I'm with Leeson his when So so Brandt I I don't WanNa just rain on your parade I WANNA. I WANNA be a good partner here so I went above and beyond I prepared my th- my Vienna sausages few different ways I went low class on what high class and I went normal because I want to give it every opportunity to enter into my world. I will not be judgmental I'm not going to cast aspersions. I'm just going to. So here's what I did. I I've got a regular sausage either. Can and then for the alternative to that. I just have one toasted in a pan. So they're just a regular sausage toast them ever myself so I'm very bland. As far as it goes and the other thing that I will say is when you open these up there in leakey jellied sauce and I do not like that at all so I have. My can isn't even open. I just had up here ready to go okay. What I would be doing if it's downstairs. Where you normally doing is I washed them off in the sink. I rent them out and drain them and then eat them that way. However the other day the Canyon opened was kind of dry. And you're upset that the jelly wasn't there no not well. I was upset like should I not eat this because it looked weird. It didn't have the disgusting Jelly. I'm going to bet on whether you did it in So I ate part of them though they went to the dog who just loved them seasons under me. Gordie sits underneath because he knows. I'm probably going to drop something at some point in time. And so we we've been looking at the armor site Roku Cobra talking. Cotton Spicy is okay. But that's not my favorite. I'm sorry it's the Jalapeno is the one that I liked the best. Wow okay all right I. I didn't realize there are so many varied choices with your armor. Armor just lives in sodium. I looked at the sodium. Count on these things. It's like six hundred thirty and the they considered one tiny hand to serving. So it's close to your days worth of sodium in this little cannon which because Leeson I went and got our full checkups recently in my sodium. Everything levels were great. They're like you're in fantastic health. I'm like well thank you. Well I might be true but it has nothing to do with that. Your sodium level actually has is no reflection of how much sodium you consume and review back. The reason I know that is because I did a little dance last time. I had my checkup because unlike Soya sauce isn't hurting me. He's like dude has nothing to do with it. Like I cut back on Sodium IF YOU SODIUM LEVELS HIGH. I don't I don't know they actor on TV I don't know Console to What's that guy's name that's always on CNN now spacing that they have a doctor? This poor guy My wife watches a lot of CNN. He's he's on twenty four hours a day seven days a week around with a friend of milk. Say He's the Ronin. He's the guy the go-to Guy He. He hosts a he hosts a podcast about about corona virus. John I feel like we're doing a disservice real quick before we get to your Tade in raw style. The heard me open the can yet. Okay go ahead. Are we ready lease? That's his name. Go ahead which is interesting. Gupta is how I would describe the Jelly that is on these sir. All right here we go. I don't know if they're gonNA be able to hear it but.

"Our main story this morning CAPAC the oil cartel members and partners are all gathered in Vienna today for the start of a two-day meeting. It's a big moment for the past few months. It's members have cut oil production all in an effort to increase oil prices. Now the question is if the prolong those cuts or if the let them expire. Ask planned in March David. Dari is at the meeting in Vienna. So David Walk me through the backdrop of these talks. What have we seen in terms of oil prices and oil production so the backdrop of this meeting is over the past few years OPEC and its allies have been implementing oil production cuts? This time around is is An expected increase in supply in the first quarter of twenty twenty including but not limited to rising. US show production on also. They're all all fares about demand not limited to uncertain economic data in part linked to the China trade war oil prices. I would pass you. Today's have resumed on hopes. That OPEC may deepen its but they are historically speaking relatively low on one extra element of this. That meeting is that Saudi Aramco the world's most profitable company is going to be announcing a IPO price on Saudis. Best interests to support prices because in some part the success of the I I is linked to stupidity of oil prices. So who are the factions factions at this meeting the factions at this meeting four and two maybe three broad categories. You've got the Saudis and it's in their best interests to to support or prices as much as possible They've got the ARAMCO. IPO TO PROTECT On they've been over complying with The cut quotas. They agreed to pardon pretty much full. Most of the period of time. This deals being in place. You've got the Russians who are the leaders of the plus function and In OPEC plus on data really want to cut from much longer on a certain debt. Really want more deeply They are working on concessions from the rest of our plus for that content sites they just want enormous new pipeline with China on the base wants to produce as much as they can but they see the benefit in supporting our Saudi allies on the third main function is probably the under complying OPEC nations and particularly the Iraqis on the Nigerians. When when the Iraqi minister arrived in Vienna choosing night he was quite put about about the idea of Deepa cuts? Even Iraq hasn't been fully complained for most of the deal so far. So that's a little bit like saying let's let's go to a more expensive restaurant but the service can pay now. Haven't we been reporting that instead of a cut. Saudi Arabia and the run up to the meeting has been threatening to unleash even more well oil. How does that factor into these discussions? The Saudis have grown. Pretty tight of shouldering more more than that fast. Sheriff these cuts on their own and in the days before this meeting that even threatened to do away with cut soul together ramping up. Production and essentially crushing global news prices. You some of the spoken to so that would be a moral victory for the Saudis. They don't necessarily think it's option though seriously. Consider Okay so the meeting concludes tomorrow. What our market's GonNa make of all of this? There are three possible. Brewed outcomes uh-huh and for markets. At least on Friday number one would be a barish out can probably a rollover of just three months. I taking deal to June twenty twenty. I don't think that would be enough to support oil prices right now and nor does anybody else that seems a middle way option. Might be a a six month rollover with not the cuts and even then some of the people have been. You don't think that would be enough and a sort of third basket of options uh-huh either extending by twelve months or deepening cuts on the figure. Full hundred thousand barrels a day extra has been touted that would take cuts two point six million barrels a day cut. Either of those last two options would probably be taken quite well by markets. You can find Oliver reporting on the OPEC meeting as it progresses up under.

Exchange Bianca went inside to collect the money while Jack State on the street as Jack waited. He looked around and noticed something strange. Many of the pedestrians nearby were acting suspicious frequently glancing over at him. He assumed correctly that they were law enforcement. The hair in the back of his neck began to stand but he stayed patient. He needed the money if he was going to make a clean get-away after several tense minutes. Bianco go finally exited the building with the cash as soon as she stepped out the door. Jack shouted at her telling her to run but before she could process what he had said. Jack took off running down the street. He didn't get very far. Squad cars appeared out of nowhere aware and blocked his exit soon he was in cuffs. Bianca as well. The Vienna Woods killer was finally in custody. Jack now waited a Miami jail to be extradited back to Austria meanwhile out in California via the L. A. P. D. and Austrian authorities began working together pulling their evidence to build a case and as law enforcement units collected said evidence evidence a lingering thought pass through everyone's minds. Was it possible that Jack murdered elsewhere besides Austria and L. A. They soon got their answer as they searched Jack's Miami apartment. They had found a collection of diaries many of which had missing pages pertaining to the dates. Jack's victims had gone missing. The police speculated that Jack had gotten rid of incriminating evidence however one diary entry caught their attention for the dates of September fourteenth through September Sixteenth nineteen ninety it simply Red Vienna to Prague to Vienna Geiger found this intriguing and decided to contact Interpol to see if Prague had any unsolved sex worker murders sure enough the prog doc police did for year and a half they had no leads to the murder of block botch Cafa when Geiger heard the details they matched the murders in Austria yeah and in Los Angeles and based on the time line they were able to establish that Blanca was Jack's. I kill four months after being released eastern prison. It became clear to them now that he had never been rehabilitated while Geiger was in Prague confirming the murder of Blunk Botch Gavaa. Jack returned to Vienna in handcuffs. It was made twenty eighth nineteen ninety two. He had only been away from Austria for three months that night. Jack devised a plan to get himself out of jail and into a hospital he somehow managed to sneak in a razor and when no one was looking cut open vein along his arm. Jack purposely cut the vein in a way that while making a bloody mess would not have actually ended in his life he knew that if he appeared suicidal that he would be transferred out of prison cell and into the comforts of a hospital bed but the ruse didn't work he was quickly bandaged and remained in his cell to await trial. Jack's trial L. began nearly two years later on April Twentieth Nineteen Ninety four the Austrian press dubbed it the crime of the century in Austria criminal can be tried for crimes that they committed in other countries within the Austrian courts Austria took on the responsibility of trying Jack for the murders orders in Prague and in Los Angeles and as the prosecution made their case they called on the FBI and Lapd to testify against against Jack with the evidence they had found in Los Angeles. Jack's defense was simple. He leaned into his celebrity. He claimed that he didn't need to spend his money. Liane sex workers because since he was rich and famous sex came to him naturally the last thing he needed to do was pay for it. According to Psychiatrists Reinhard Taylor Jack even bragged during one of their sessions that he had slept with over one hundred fifty women between May nineteen ninety and February nineteen ninety-two even when facing a life sentence Jack's malignant narcissism shined through despite being charming and witty he was fragile and hyper-sensitive about the reputation he had created for himself and as the two-month trial came to an end the jury had decided that his charm arm wasn't going to save him this time on June twenty eighth. Jack Unterweger was convicted of nine out of eleven murders due to the decomposition decomposition of Alfreda shrimp and Regina premiums bodies. There was not enough evidence to convict Jack. But even justice had not been found in their cases the overwhelming evidence and the other murders earn Jack conviction of several life sentences he was set to spend the rest of his life behind bars but but Jack had sworn to himself that he would not live the rest of his days rotting in a prison cell the next morning June twenty ninth Nineteen Ninety-four. Jack's body was found hanging in his cell at the grottes courthouse he had taken the drawstring from his pants fashioned. Washington not similar to the one he used on the sex workers he had murdered and hung himself from a coat hook. One Austrian public official would call it his best murder Jack Inter vaguer was able to do do the unthinkable with the power of his pen. He changed the public narrative about his life. He manipulated the world into thinking he was a victim of childhood abuse abuse and that the abuse was what led him to kill when he was young those in power bought his lies. Hook line and sinker. Jack was never reformed or rehabilitated. He was a caged animal waiting for his chance to kill again and when he was finally released he he didn't wait long to satisfy his dark urges. Ultimately he was dark and awful proof that even your favorite author you can be a poet of death.

"The habsburg archduke was assassinated in sarajevo in revenge. Austria declared war on serbia igniting world war. One austria was on the losing side when the dust finally settled the habsburgs were deposed and their empire was dismembered by the victors. The war left austria as small landlocked nation in vienna as an imperial city without an empire. A head without a body. For what happens next. Make your way along the right side of the church in the square to the right of the church stands placards with black and white photos in nineteen thirty eight. Hitler and nazi germany forcibly annexed now powerless austria leading into world. War two. The photos clearly show the war's destruction vienna bombs destroyed. Nearly a quarter of the city's buildings. At war's end the city was a mess like berlin. It was divided into occupied zones. Austria was declared neutral forbidden. Join either nato or the soviet union's warsaw-pact it became a kind of no man's land between east and west battleground of espionage through the cold war but slowly. The city rebuilt the churches colorful power roof though medieval style actually dates from the nineteen fifties. Vienna's ubon system was expanded in the nineteen seventies stephens. Plots was completely modernized. The modern glass building that faces saint stephen's dates from nineteen ninety. The building brings vienna's history full circle. It's curved facade. Echoes the shape of the ancient roman fortress which stood here two thousand years ago and notice. How the glass catches the reflection of saint stephen's blending the old and the new. It's a great photo op. Finally look around the square at the viennese people of today vienna's population is one point. Eight million and falling. The average viennese mother has only one point. Three children and dogs are the preferred child for many young professionals one. In every five. Austrians calls vienna home. The truly viennese person is an ethnic mix a habsburg cocktail many of their grandparents came from the eastern countries of the former empire hungary the czech republic slovakia. And so on. Today's vienna is certainly modern but compared with most big cities. The pace of life here is slow. After two thousand years of turbulent history vienna has settled down into a sleepy pleasant place where culture is still king..

"Stephens pots a microcosm of vienna's history the cathedral linton stephens. Plot put the city's history on display for much of its history. Vienna has been the dividing line between eastern and western europe. The city was first occupied. Two thousand years ago by the romans. They built their fort right here where the cathedral stands today. In fact a few roman era stones are actually incorporated into the cathedral. They're part of the two octogonal towers that flank the main entrance. Roman vienna was the crossroads of europe where the danube river traveling west to east crossed the north south trade route through the alps after rome fell about five hundred ad. The city was invaded many times. By germanic barbarians hungarian magyar end mongol hordes around the eight hundred charlemagne the eastern part of his empire oester irish or austria in twelve. Seventy three noble family called the habsburgs claimed charlemagne's title of holy roman emperor for the next six centuries. The habsburgs would rule a vast and expanding empire around thirteen hundred. The cathedral was built. It convinced the habsburgs to move to vienna from their former capital in prague. The churches colorful roof sports black eagles fashioned after the habsburg family symbol the habsburg double headed eagle faced both east and west symbolizing their control over a far flung empire for the next page in vienna's history focus on the cathedral's north tower notice. It's about half the size of the south tower. That's because in fifteen twenty nine. Vienna was invaded by ottoman turks. Construction funds had to be diverted to the defense department for the next two centuries. Vienna was europe's best in against a rising tide of islam. The wars culminated in sixteen eighty three when two hundred thousand ottoman surrounded the city walls. Today's ring stresa. The ottomans were driven off for good as we learned earlier. They left behind bags of coffee. N vienna's first coffeehouse opened or so goes the over caffeinated legend. Vienna became one of europe's great cities attracting talent from all over the german speaking world. Wolfgang amadeus mozart lived here in the seventeen. Eighty s just a block or so behind the cathedral for the next century. Vienna enjoyed its golden age of arts sciences and the good life politically the habsburg empire was on the decline as rising powers like france britain and germany came to dominate europe but for the city of vienna the late nineteen th century was. It's cultural highpoint. One remnant from that time still stands on stephens pots. it's where cantor strauss hit stephens. Pots the grand soot-covered building with red columns. This fine neoclassical architecture sums up vienna's belle epoch mix of elegance and modernism as vienna entered the twentieth century. It was home to a man who would change history forever. Imagine this in one thousand nine hundred seven. This struggling young artists stood right here. In stephens plants he painted a watercolour. The cathedral's north tower. It was just one of many scenes. Poverty stricken young men would paint trying to make it in the world of art but after eight long years of frustration in vienna. He gave up and went on a different path in a different country. His name adolf hitler as it would turn out. Hitler and the twentieth century would prove to be brutal on vienna in nineteen fourteen..

While the empress wasn't busy making babies she actually organized chastity commissions to defend her capital cities. Moral standards from here. We return to cantor strasser. Fifty yards away. Lady providence's one bare breast points. The way as you walked back to canton estrada notice the buildings all around you most are fairly modern having been rebuilt after world war. Two half of the old city was intentionally destroyed by allied air raids winston churchill intended to moralize viennese who were disconcertingly enthusiastic about the nazis. When you reach kanter stresa turn left. Continue north down strauss stresa which leads to the cathedral and vienna's main square as you walk down vienna's main street so full of life. It's clear the city has bounced back after the world wars of the twentieth century but vienna's true peak. It's golden age was the nineteenth century back then. The habsburgs still ruled a vast empire with vienna as their glorious capital. As we've seen it was one of europe's cultural capitals. It was the city of fine wine. Exquisite art coffee and chocolates dress up balls and the good life composers came here to launch their careers mozart. Beethoven brahms johann strauss senior and junior whipped the mass into a delirious frenzy with their new dance craze the waltz architects redrew. "The dreaded starbucks invasion stalled at the gates of vienna continue past hotel. Soccer at the end of the street is a small triangular. Cobbled square adorned with modern sculptures. Albertina Albertina plots on your left is the albertina museum. It's modern entrance is topped by sleek titanium. Canopy critics call it the diving board. The museum is worth a visit for chandeliered rooms and it's paintings from impressionism to modern art. The albertina is housed in a long tan and white neoclassical building. It's the tip of the hochberg policy. The sprawling complex of buildings at the habsburg emperors called home will end this walk at the center of the hochberg. Albertina platts itself is filled with statues. This is the powerful thought provoking monument against war and fascism. It remembers the dark years from nineteen thirty eight to nineteen forty five when austria came under the rule of nazi germany. It's also poignant reminder of the brutality of all war start with the split whitestone monument these are called the gates of violence standing directly in front of it. You're at the symbolic gates of a concentration camp. It's a montage of wartime images. There are clubs and world war one gas masks. A dying woman gives birth to a future soldier chained slave labors. Sit on a pedestal of granite. The stone comes from the infamous corey at the mutt house and concentration camp. It's just up the danube from vienna. Where one hundred thousand prisoners died behind the gates of islands. The hunched over figure on the ground is an austrian jew forced to scrub anti-nazi graffiti off the street with a toothbrush of vienna's two hundred thousand jews about a third died in nazi concentration camps the nearby statue with a head buried. The stone is orpheus. Entering the underworld he reminds austrians and the rest of us of the horrible consequences of turning a blind eye to the fascist threat finally behind orpheus stands the declaration that established a democratic austria in nineteen forty-five and once again restored the country's basic human rights. One more thing this monument stems on the spot where world war two bombs struck demolishing a seller and burying several hundred people alive austria had been led into world war two by germany which annexed the country in nineteen.
