"Man killed my father. He is currently alive and well. No one's doing anything about the supreme court of honduras has convicted him in absentia. So he's wanted. And and he is due to serve sixteen years in prison with the caveat. He must be captured so that was a clip from the new documentary after the murder of alfred. Lima produced by our friend meredith. Vieira about a son who went to extreme lengths to pursue justice on behalf of his murdered father. And we're joined now by that son. Paul lima welcome paul to the show. Thanks so much money. So paul your father was murdered in honduras in two thousand. So what was he doing in that country. And why was he killed. My father had invested in a bakery there and a couple of years after that the people who were running it reneged on the deal forcing him to take them to court and while he was in court he learned that they were making a lot more than bread. They were actually using the bakery to process and distribute cocaine which my father wasn't down with and so he won the ability of shutting the bakery down in court. And that's what he was doing on you know in february of two thousand. When he was murdered he was shutting the bakery down. Paul thank you so much for sharing your story because it's such an important one of the man who killed your father was convicted and sentenced to prison for sixteen years but he is believed to have bribed a judge and was able to go on living his life. Just free in honduras. You decided to take things into your own hands and hire bounty hunters to help you capture him and hand him over to the authorities. What made you want to do that. Because that's pretty dangerous desperation. I was so desperate for closure at the time you know. I tried for thirteen years to get justice for my father using all the legal means accessible and it was just clear at that point that i was never gonna get justice. There was no hero. That was gonna come save the day. Do what was right. And so you know as crazy as it sounds. I i needed justice and i also realized that this was not something i was going to get over. There are some things in life that you get over and this was not one of those things and so as as crazy as it is the idea of hiring two bounty hunters to go hunt down my father's killer in two thousand thirteen. That sounded like a pretty sound idea. Well meredith you aren't executive producer on this documentary. When did you first hear about this story. And why did you want to get involved. Well first of all. It didn't sound like a sound idea to me when i heard about it. My producing partner. Amy rap told me about all and his struggle to get justice for his father and the fact that he was going to honduras with these bounty hunters and and his mission was to to get this guy and put him in prison and my first thought was what is he thinking this guy and the second one was this is an amazing man who loves his father and said to his dad every day after his daddy passed away every morning. Got up and said i will never forget you and i felt that story deserved to be told but on the surface. It's an amazing story. But hall in and of himself is just a a lovely human being an annual root for him. If you still think he's crazy when you watch the film. I scream at the at many times like paul. Get out of there for c. Never listens to me and then you'll see what happens. He's very brave guy. He's very breadth. Paul honduras has been known as the murder. Capital of the world has been. And you put yourself in several situations where you came face to face face with people who could have easily killed you. You must have been scared that you could lose your life. I mean it as brave as you are. You are a little fearful now. Yeah you know there was one moment. Specifically that's in the in the documentary where the director angus james and myself. We went into the bar. That's connected to the bakery and they caught us trying to film covertly and they surrounded us and they all had guns pointed at us You know we had to talk our way out of death and and that was a. That was a big moment for me. Because i really recognize just how dangerous this was what i was doing and how responsible i was being and that was that was a turning point for me. You know. at at that point everything changed. And i wanted to live. But i still wanted justice and so. The tactic changed at that. Point to what you see in the movie. I mean everyone needs to watch this documentary to see how it ends but meredith. What do you want people to take away from from watching paul story. I think it's an amazing story and it's it's full of drama and there's a lot of believe it or not humor in it and pay thoughts but ultimately it's it's about the love of the sun for his dad and i want people to that away because this is a a young man who lost his dad at the age of twenty never gave up Finding justice for his father and some closure for him. And i see that picture of his dad. And i'm sure that still brings tears to his sons is but also a real sense of love and At it's just it's it's a very wonderful store. I think we need it. The times are such that. I think we need this sort of story. So i'm very proud..

Matt Lauer Accused of Exposing Himself to Former Today Show Producer
"The Matt Lauer situation in this whole mess at NBC and did you see that and M. S. N. B. C. executive allegedly was showing people a compromising photo of Maria Menounos former NBC talent that's call Razi anyway in this role in federal book at this Matt Lauer situation with the killers are actually coming out of the story that rolled out what was it lowers the last week or the week before about this producer at the Sochi Olympics who was well essentially rate she claims by Matt Lauer now we have the details as dribs and drabs are coming out the book publishers on Tuesday if I'm not mistaken and in this Ronan Farrow book a former today show Booker this is new Booker for the today show and that's an individual that's essentially like a producer or Booker and they booked guests so if there's a hot story if there's some you know a kid that fell down a well in in Dayton Ohio the Booker tries in and gets the family to do an interview in a live from the front lawn of the house yeah that's what a Booker does he'll try to make sure that the Good Morning America crew doesn't beat him to it and they get that's what a Booker does on the shelves this Booker Melissa Lauder claims that Matt Lauer exposed himself to her at a party in twenty seven twenty ten lata toll feral that Lauer lord her up to an empty office and an NBC cocktail party letter to a sofa and unzipped his pants and pulled out his erect **** well that was a cocktail party Lauer's attorney says that he never exposed himself to anyone he says this ridiculous story has been shopped around for years many allegations that are being circulated would never raise during any fact checking process we will not take part in the marketing circuits for this book Lotta reportedly told federal that she tearfully told and curry about the incident and says the curry told her or told to executives at the network about this and then you also have stories about I think curry as well as Meredith Vieira the told some of these women to go report this the fact that got together with the widely reported fact that NBC brash shut down fellows investigation at the Harvey Weinstein makes you wonder whether NBC is upper management are gonna survive I mean that's a
Woman accuses Matt Lauer of rape; former anchor denies claim
"Seven rape allegations against former today show host Matt Lauer at the two thousand fourteen Sochi Olympics or maybe since even over new book catching killed details his investigation into Harvey Weinstein as well as his attempts to get his then employer NBC news to broadcast the story now new allegations surfacing about former today show anchor Matt Lauer who was fired from NBC in twenty seventeen for alleged sexual misconduct according to variety which obtained excerpts from the book a former NBC news producer who worked with Meredith Vieira has come forward identifying herself in pharaoh's book and stating that Lauer sexually assaulted her at the twenty fourteen Sochi Olympics according to the woman's account and catching kill Lauer joined her envy or for drinks and she ended up going back to ours room twice once to retrieve her press credential and another because he invited her back to the room once in the hotel room the woman says Lauer he was wearing a tee shirt and boxers pushed her against the door and kissed her then pushed her onto the bed according to the variety excerpts from the book she said she was in the midst of telling him no when he just did it it hurts so bad I remember thinking is this normal the woman telling pharaoh it was non consensual in the sense that I was too drunk to consent he was non consensual and that I said multiple times that I didn't want to back in New York City according to the excerpts the woman told pharaoh she went on to have further sexual encounters with flower that were consensual after the encounter according to catch and kill ferro says she told colleagues and superiors at NBC but nothing happened until she went to Meredith Vieira and told her what happened beer orders her to go to NBC human resources with a lawyer when contacted by variety neither NBC news nor Lauer had a comment the latter has previously said I fully acknowledge that I acted inappropriately as a husband father and principal at NBC however I want to make it perfectly clear that any allegations or reports of coercive aggressive or abusive actions on my part at any time absolutely false and the book also presents pharaoh's account of his investing Asian and Harvey Weinstein and his efforts to get that story on the air at NBC eventually he had to take the story to a magazine to get it
Rape accusations against Lauer ensnares NBC management
"Do you have a Matt Lauer impression we need that because we just mentioned this story in a covered on the today show because it's coming out in road pharaoh's book and it was you know at least part of it released the variety overnight NBC news got it they covered on the today show that while the accuser the got him fired two seven of rape I don't even know if I want to say it exactly what the terminology is basically just called the Kobe I guess I don't know so you know what we're talking a lot worse said coldly my day job Lee so the accusing it off I'm trying to keep it I don't know if you recall that family friendly but in a coma so the so the accusation their their experience and I think Jamie it's it's it does kind of seem like a lot of people have the initial reaction of whoa okay this takes it to a different level absolutely comes to Matt Lauer is also see consensual right well Matt Lauer comes out with a statement today and it is scorched earth and I think I I honestly it this is probably you this is one of the very few times others say that that someone who has stood accused of something like this this one of the few times they've been able to put out a statement that has almost totally change my mind wow I is so Matt Lauer puts out this lady statement this morning saying look I've been quiet through this whole thing it's clear that was a mistake first of all he says I should have known that I should have spoken up and defended myself when there were the stories about me having a locking mechanism underneath my desk that would love to work yeah because that didn't exist at NBC news actually confirmed he had no such locking mechanism at his desk so then he says look I I I I've been trying to protect my kids I don't want them to be affected by all of this he says I've admitted that it had affairs and Brooke novels is the one with this particular accusation he says yeah the affair that we had started in Sochi very late at night in a hotel room he admits they engaged in what you call it the Kobe there was among other things he said there were some other stuff going on in the bedroom as well though there was it was a it was a lengthy affair and then that affair actually went on when they got back to New York he said but yeah I texted I called or she called me we met up for drinks she came to my apartment he says about the power dynamics saying she didn't work for me she worked for Meredith Vieira because I I had no control over her career and then this is were really get scorched earth he says I admit I ended the affair poorly I simply stopped communicating with her brother continue to reach out she admitted to NBC at the time she filed her complaint that she called me late at night while I was home with my family in an effort to re kindle the affair but I tend to to go back to my life and pretend as if nothing had happened I understand how that must have made her feel he was desperate in other words you don't however being upset or having second thoughts does not give anyone the right to make false accusations years later about an affair in which they fully and willfully participated and many breaks down his story I mean seriously this is the cliff notes version that I'm giving you breaks down her story says it's filled with contradictions declines our first encounter was an assault yet she actively participated in arranging future meetings maybe in my apartment on multiple occasions she says I was the one pursuing the relationship what yet once it was over she was the one calling me asking to rekindle it she says she felt pressured to continue the affair because I had control over her career but she did not work for me gin work for the today show or NBC news she said she wanted to remain anonymous yet she was reportedly trying to sell a book within a year after filing her complaint she said she just wanted NBC to do the right thing yet she sought a monetary payment and two years after I was fired she is stepping forward to do more damage he says I had no desire to write this but I had no choice for two years the women with whom I had extramarital relationships have abandoned shared responsibility and instead it shielded themselves from blame behind false allegations they have avoided having to look a boyfriend husband or child in the eye and say I cheated all they have done enormous damage in the process and I will no longer provide them the shelter of my silence this is just chapter one then okay so as you said earlier David change your mind yes because it's a totally different dynamic and again it goes back to two separate stories and you got no proof either way yeah now if he's got texts that's different well I think he's not putting that out there if he doesn't have the receipts that that at least show I mean you you're never going to be able to prove one way or the other whatever happened in Sochi you're never gonna be able to prove one way or the other whether or not it was an assault or or consensual because only two people now yeah for sure but I think a reasonable person would be able to read text messages or see a call log somewhere where she was calling him and say okay that was consensual that would appear to be consensual to a lot of people yes and if okay this again as code there may have been one acts say among the many that she regrets but if she didn't text back and continues the affair it doesn't make any sense you know what I'm saying now to say that I don't know man it yeah I'll just leave it at this it paints a completely different picture and it also would suggest that NBC yet just fired him because they knew the pressure was coming in it was the me too moment all right I also do have to wonder something can you tell me maybe I just miss this I had no idea that that particular accuser didn't work on the today show was that common knowledge I just missed it I don't remember that either I thought it was someone that was on staff because they talked about the power dynamic at least somebody who worked in BC news and she did right apparently according to

Ford Cutting 7,000 Global Jobs As Part Of Restructuring Plan
"The Ford Motor Company announced this morning. It's cutting seven thousand salary jobs worldwide about ten percent of its white collar employees. It's all part of a big multi year restructuring program that CEO, Jim Hackett has embarked upon, you might remember, though, that Ford made it through the financial crisis, without the bankruptcy filings, the GM, and Chrysler had to make in the f one fifty pickup truck has been bestseller and huge profit maker for decades now. But as marketplace's Jack Stewart reports Ford, along with all the other car companies is gearing up. Very more challenging future. The also industry is anticipating some major technological disruption to its business, but as part of planning for that Michelle Krebs had also try to says companies have to keep doing what that doing. I don't make your absolutely cannot take their eyes off the ball of today's business because that is what is creating the funding to finance this future, that we don't know, when it's going to happen that future for Ford, which wants to be a mobility company means getting into all sorts of things from bike sharing programs to self-driving robo taxis uncertainty, though, is always haunts plan for says Stephanie Brindley analyst at IHS market. You're saying it in some of the financial results. You're seeing it in different cost-cutting programs at different automakers for it's not alone in trying to balance this at all companies worry that one day, people may choose not to own a vehicle, and just use a map like Uber or lift, which with tens of billions of dollars robo tank sees could hasten that shift even more GM boats and autonomous startup cruise for a reported Hoffa billion tech companies with deep pockets like Google's parents alphabet have their own self driving. They're just not promoting it yet, but they are moving forward and looking forward to the next era in the automotive industry, and all it's really clear about that next era is that it's going to need as much money as possible to competion, even if that means cuts today. I'm Jack shoe for marketplace. Morgan Stanley is today's bearer of ill economic tidings in a report out this morning. The banks analysts said that, if the trade war between the United States and China keeps up and the president's threatened tariff increases on more Chinese imports come to pass a global recession is within the realm of possibility. So the question now it seems is whether President Trump's approach to trade negotiations is working as he intended cleared Williams was still not too long ago. A White House trade policy official miss Williams. Thanks for coming on. Thanks. Thanks for having me. So for those who don't follow trade, perhaps as closely as. Well as you and I do gimme the gimme like the thirty second elevator pitch version of President Trump's trade agenda. Sure. Well, what President Trump is trying to do is get his arms around a set of long-standing unfair trade practices. That's been going around and the global community. I think the, the most prominent example of that is what's happening with China. Obviously, he's expressed concerns with, you know, the NAFTA agreement with elements of the World Trade Organization. And I think in general with sort of a lack of equitable treatment when it comes to tariffs around the world, do you think, though that the president's tariff policies are the way to get done what he wants it seems that it's very spur of the moment, shall we say now? Well, I actually think since the president has been in office, what he has tried to do is to take tariff action in many cases as a means of leverage, you know, not all tariffs are created equal, as they say. So I mean I could go through. One by one in China. It's really a means to an end fair enough. And, and look, it's only a half hour program. I appreciate you. You know go through the harmonized tariff schedule. But let me ask you a more fundamental question, and it's going to sound like I'm poking the president in the eye, and I'm really not do you think he understands the way tariff works, because if you look at his public pronouncements his tweets virtually everything he says, about tariffs would seem to indicate he just doesn't understand how they work. It's not the Chinese are paying. It's not that there are billions coming in, in the United States from overseas. It's American consumers who are paying these tariffs and the president discounts that at every turn. I think the tariff question actually is, is somewhat of a complex one. Now, I will be the first to grant you the tariffs do have somewhat of a negative impact on the US Konami and on consumers. They can have an impact on businesses who need to get those, those products from abroad. I mean, I'm not a tariff guy all of that said, you know, who pays the tariff in any particular instance is not as simple as, oh, it's all China or it's all the US consumer. And what we've found is we've analyzed it is that it's really different in, in each instance, I'm sure I don't need to say for the academic research that shows in the section to thirty two and three hundred tariff cases that the president has imposed on the Chinese. It is literally American consumers who were paying sometimes inaccessable one hundred percent of the tariffs and more to the point though. With all respect, you didn't answer the question, does the president understand how tariffs work, I think that he does. And again, I, I, I would paint the three one in the two thirty two with, with different brush. I think when the administration put in place, three thrill one Tara. Chiefs. They were expressly designed to pick products that the US could source from other places and you actually do see some of that happening on steel. I, I would grant you that different situation. And I think that the steel tariffs were more controversial within the administration itself for that reason. I'm not sure exactly when you left the administration must Wilms but, but the last you heard from folks inside the White House. What is your sense of the president's sense of urgency on fixing and, and getting to a deal with the Chinese, and, and does it carry into the twenty twenty campaign cycle farther? I left the White House about a month ago. April nineteenth with my was my last day. I went and actually got to see the president a couple of weeks after that, I think that with respect to China that the president is willing to keep at the current strategy as long as it takes to ensure that China starts playing by the rules. I think if you look what you're hearing from the hill, you see Democrats and Republicans alike, all saying, stay tough on China, make sure you get structural reforms in China where you're getting feedback are things on steel and aluminum and saying, we need to work with the allies more. So, look, I hear ya on what he is hearing from the hill. And from people inside the boat way writ, large, but every single farmer we talked to and virtually every single small business person with truly just one or two exceptions in the last year and a half has said these tariffs are killing us. Right. No. There's no question that there is going to be some pressure from the business community. I've been surprised actually that, that the, the business community for the most part has stayed firm with the president and said, you need to, you need to be tough on China because they're hurting my business. A lot of the pain that the agriculture community has been feeling in the past has been on the retaliation, the restrictions trying to deal with that. But if we can get the commitments from China, and the market access from China, it's going to be a much better situation. Clear Williams, former deputy director for international policy, the National Economic Council, the White House on his way through job in the private sector Williams, thanks very much for your time. I appreciate it, sir. It's my pleasure.
