Kamala Harris: Climate Mental Health Stops People From Having Families

"This week, vice president Kamala Harris appeared at a climate conference in Miami Beach, Florida. Listen to this sound bite and tell me that she's this dumb. One of the young leaders was talking to me about climate mental health. I said, tell me what's going on with your peers. And she talked about how her peers are thinking about it. One example is whether when they're ready, could they start a family? What can they do and how can they adapt the education that they're having now to their activism? You know, the word projection, it's the Kamala Harris of the world that are messing up our kids that are screwing up our kids. If they have climate mental health challenges, like she suggesting that you're doing it to them, you're terrifying kids by your histrionics about thinking the world's coming to an end in the next three years because we're driving around in cars that are powered by gasoline. You people are goofy. You're not, you're absolutely nuts. Climate mental health honestly, does anybody have a child who sits around and says, oh, I don't know if I'm gonna be able to have a family because of the polar ice caps melting and the polar bears don't have a place to sit. Is that what you sit around and your kids sit around and shoot that? Get them to a therapist. Take them to the doctor. Take them to your priest, your pastor. "Off this morning without warning. Outside vice president Kamala Harris official resident in northwest D.C., three more buses arrived in New York City as well. These all from Texas where lieutenant governor Dan Patrick tells Fox News that will continue to send them to ease what he calls an invasion of their state. The D.C. bus carried people mostly from Venezuela, including a month one month old baby. They have been taken by aid workers to local shelters. In Virginia, new guidelines released Friday from the young and administration will make material changes regarding how transgender students are treated in school. The new policies will require that students use facilities like bathrooms and locker rooms that match the sex that they were assigned at birth, athletics will also be separated by sex. It will also require schools to get written permission from parents before using a different name or pronoun for transgender students and that staff can not conceal any material information about students from their parents including information about gender. Several democratic lawmakers have denounced the new policies, saying they roll back transgender rights while Republican lawmakers thanked governor Glenn youngkin, school districts, must adopt the policy after a 30 day comment period beginning on the 26th. Luke Luger WTO P news. A controversial new school superintendent appears set to come to spottsylvania county. The school board has decided to move forward with an offer to Mark Taylor, worth almost $250,000 a year. Board member Nicole Cole voted against Taylor's nomination. There's an offer of 245,000 for someone who meets who meets not even half of the job qualifications. Taylor has experience as a county administrator and lawyer, but none in education. He's also been under scrutiny for what parents called racist and homophobic social media posts. They voice their concerns at a public meeting earlier this week. The state board of education voted to grant the superintendent's license to Taylor on Thursday. This week, the prince George's county school board rescinded a vote that would have unseated four board members. This follows an investigation by the Maryland state inspector general, which found that the ethics reports the board used for the vote contained inaccurate information. Last year the board's ethics panel had issued reports accusing 7 board members of various offenses and recommended that 6 be removed. The Washington Post reports that some members targeted by those reports had already left the board when the state investigation was released last month. Its 1206 and effort to reduce violence in prince George's county has resulted in the enforcement of a youth curfew, but leaders say they haven't had to do much in the way of cracking down. I

"We are back and we are joined once again by ashley. lopez of k. ut austin. Hey ashley hey there. You're just in this continual loop of democrats fleeing the legislature and covering. Aren't you yeah. It's a really interesting loop that i can't seem to get out of We'll see if there's any end. I it's it's i mean it's a little bit of a farcical situation but but they're doing it because this is the only tool that that democrats have in order to stop this bill from moving forward. This is a second attempt to pass a republican authored. Bill that restricts voting rights. What would this bill do. And why democrats taking the step of fleeing the state to try and stop it well. This bills actually really similar to the last bill. They walked out on. That was close passing earlier this year at the end of may and it's you know a sweeping overhaul of the state's election code. It adds restrictions to vote by mail as well as some in person voting mainly as it relates to accommodations for people with disabilities and it creates a slew of new criminal penalties. That voting rights groups are worried will lead to this. Like uptick of people getting in legal trouble for voting crimes. In the event they make like some innocent mistakes. Voting democrats had said from the beginning that they were not on board with any legislation. That would make it harder to vote specially since it was pretty clear this was in solving any actual issue in texas state. Election officials have said that you know in twenty twenty. Our election was safe and secure and successful. So there is really no need for you know especially a giant overhaul of the election code and you know because there's another twenty something days left in the legislative session. They had to leave the state altogether as opposed to just like walk out on a final vote. And that's because they could be summoned back or arrested or some something like that if they stayed in texas. Yeah the way it works is like if the texas house which that happened this morning. The texas house calls a quorum and they don't have a quorum day the legislature can vote to have the state police arrest and bring back these lawmakers but that can only be done within state lines right so they can't go to dc for example. Grab them so that's kind of where we're at. Which of course is where they are right now and osma you you. You talked to the vice president about this The these these texas democrats are meeting with senate democrats today. We just learned that harris is going to meet with them again. I mean their message is hey. We're taking this incredibly extraordinary action. You need to do something now too. I mean what do you make of the dynamics. When when they're going to meet with senate democrats who are who are opting not to change the rule that they would have the power to change in order to voting rights bills. You know a lot of what i took away from the interview with with the vice president was this idea. On exerting outside pressure and on the idea of mobilizing a coalition groups mobilizing folks in different facets different parts of the country on the ground. And so you know a meeting with texas. Legislators to me is just another aspect of this in reality what can they do. You know i think in all honesty. I think it's very limited. What they can do in terms of their meetings with lawmakers. Here this is gonna come down to whether or not a few key. Members of the senate democrats are willing to essentially just change the rules of the filibuster and carve out an exception for voting rights. i i don't think there yet. Because if they were there yet we would have seen the mardi do that. The more and more. Maybe outside pressure is exerted on a couple of key members of the senate. I'm thinking say cureton. Cinema joe manchin in particular. Perhaps they'll be willing to budge. But you know as our colleagues reporting on congress have said. They're not the only two who are a little bit reluctant to just get rid of the filibuster ashley in austin and washington. How are republicans responding to this. Well we can start with governor greg. Abbott has is obviously not happy about this. He said that lawmakers are shirking their responsibilities as lawmakers. Actually he. He talked about this in a video address last night. The democrats must put aside partisan political games and get back to the job they were elected to do and he's already said that once this special session period which ends early in august and He is very likely to call another special session. So you know they re republicans. Don't feel like this is over for them like they are going to give up this fight to to pass voting restrictions in the state. And are you a senators have have weighed in john. Cornyn call this a publicity stunt. So you know i i think not. Surprisingly republicans are not happy about this but there they remain undeterred. It seems are at ashley. Thank you again. I'm sure we will talk to you pretty soon. About all of this. Probably thank you so much and everybody listening..

"In a problem. thanks now. west. Virginia is currently a tri state that means republicans controlled the state house of delegates the state senate and the governor seat but honestly that's relatively new. In fact it took governor jim justice who ran for office as a democrat to switch party affiliation in order for the trifecta to take hold in two thousand seventeen. So what's going on with democrats in west virginia well. As the west virginia democratic party tries to modernize diversify their discovering. Just how hard change can be. Recently state dimmed formed an affirmative action committee. You know it's it's kind of an odd term but this is probably because of the requirement. For all state delegations to have such a committee was initially imposed by the dnc. Back in one thousand. Nine hundred seventy four when gerald ford was president. West virginia is just now getting around to forming their committee. We were ordered to have an affirmative action committee. Nineteen seventy four is twenty twenty one the adoption of the affirmative action plan without the involvement of the affirmative action committee. I'm lost on that. I don't see that there's any authority we did not have any any hispanics any black people or anybody that's actually on the current affirmative action committee drafting the draft and why are ronin vaccine. Numbers not order this station. I'm mystified by this. I'm concerned that we are actually deepening. That the do in which we find ourselves with the national democratic party. That sound from a meeting of west virginia democrats earlier this month and to learn a bit more about the democratic party dynamics in west virginia i sat down with hollis lewis the newly minted co-chair of that affirmative action committee and also co chair of the black caucus. I asked hollis what it means to be a democrat in virginia in twenty twenty one. Or that's a great question and like you just said i mean We're looked at his arrest. They but we have not been. That's sort of a a a new revelation of as until like maybe a couple years ago we were definitely a blue streak state. That was kind of our history. Even our governor he was he ran as a democrat in. Sort of flip to a republican. So i think what it means to be. A democrat now is that we're trying to find our identity. We're try to a like of reestablish ourselves. And i think that to your previous question you have sort of a sorta the veteran group and you have the merger of the younger group in. We're trying to find a balance between one. Another ooh wee holidays you have said a mouthful there because that is truly what is going on so many state democratic parties maybe most especially in the south because of the ways that that race works. So i'm so. I've always thought west virginia's fascinating because y'all exist because of the civil war right like west virginia was like nope we about to be free. We are going over here and joining the union. Peace out virginia. Can you talk to me about what race with in the democratic party is feeling like right now for west virginia democrats. I think not only here in west. Virginia i would think nationally like what we're trying to do particularly like and i'm just speaking for myself as a black person what we're trying to do is that we want to continue to represent the party. Continue to update this party. But we're sorta add crossover rose in which we have to have our voices heard of no longer. Can't we sit back. Vote in and get our stacey. Abrams on and do all. These amazing works to sort of this party and bring it to to prominence in not have our voices nowadays not have a voice are to be at the these tables and not just be at these tables but actually be contributing valued member at type. So talk to me about the caucuses They are in certain ways. Forty years late Because you all were meant to have already had the identity based caucuses and the affirmative action committee as you know kind of edict from the larger dnc but but you're here now and since exist. What are you hoping to accomplish. Basically what we wanna do Is that we wanna bring like perspective to the table. We want Be a part of the process and let you know the party. A large know that. Hey not only we're here We have a lot of voting members and we feel like we would be. We can be the ones to reach those voters. We want to be the ones not only just reached the voters to educate the is. We want to cultivate candidates. You know candidates who again may look different from traditional candies or may have a different perspective from traditional candidates. We wanna have sort of a multifaceted approach into making sure that our voices are perspective racial identity sexuality whatever is uplifted within the party but also still work to move the party forward. You know it's interesting to me to hear you talk about it in those ways particularly in these terms about how not only the voters but also the candidates being potentially being groomed for positions both in the state and perhaps at the federal level change and it makes me wonder if senator mansions decision not to support the for the people act has less to do with. What's going on in dc and more to do with what's going on in west. Virginia is there in this kind of tension within the party. A concern that bringing in those new voters new faces might unseat existing democrats who hold power. Well i'm the i think anytime. You are trying to do something different anytime. Anything is changing. You're going to be if you've used to doing things a certain way. There's always going to be a level of apprehension right. But i think that we're in a position now Not only just within politics right but we're in a position now with our current drug epidemic. I mean we're sort of at the center of opioids and in all these crazy pills. Heroin and everything like that. So we're at a crossroads in which we have to start to cultivate new talents. Not only that but you. A counts are as demographic which is maybe slightly hired in Some other states and just you know finally just like a look towards the future. We have to wanna maintain young people here. We want to track young people to come here. We have to start to look different. We have to start to move different. And we have to start thinking different about how we look not only within the context of our our party but within the context of the state in the nation and world at large. I'll just wanted to clarify this for our listeners. So you are obviously holding these leadership positions within the party but you don't currently hold an elected office so let me just ask. Are you thinking about running at some point. Maybe maybe we'll see made some. That's a yes my friend and maybe some happens in a new feature but for now. I'm here now. So we'll see if you had an opportunity to sit down with senator manchin and to talk with him particularly about the for the people act. What would you want to really be able to get across to senator mansion about The you'd like to see him take. If i had a conversation i would just try to. Let's push everything aside. The snot concern ourselves to bill. Filibuster by ship or anything. Like that. I would say. What are you want. You know the future west virginia to be to pass something so monumental so historic you are the deciding. The tiebreaker vote. Let's very good upon just like changing the narrative into stereotypes that a lot of people think about our statement people any and if we want to Be a state that has a future. You know we've lost. We're losing population by the dozen. We are cities are slowly shrinking. So if we want to be a state that actually has a future In that can attract companies expedite economic development here. Then i think deep not just this but these are sort of the steps we have to take you know. We don't want to be looked upon as a state that again. That people are already having these sort of preconceived notions about one of. We're forward. thank you. We're about future service kind.

You know he If there's a vote in in in washington he has to come back to west virginia and explain the reasons for voting for it To his constituents. And i think that You hear that time in time and time again from him And while i think you know. His voting record upsets allow people including A lot of progressives here And even some. Sometimes you know people in the middle here You know he. He really just generally does believe that he has to Has to justify every vote the that he takes her to the people. i feel. It can be tempting especially for maybe national observers and commentators to describe mansion is really lacking anything in common with democrats but that does feel insincere insincere to me. I wanna take a moment and listen to him talking back in march about the minimum wage on this week. President joe biden knows how to get the deal done. And the bottom line is there is not one senator oliver one hundred. It doesn't wanna raise the minimum wage. Seven twenty five is sinful l-low we must raise it. I agree with president by when he says if you go to work every day you should be above the poverty guidelines. Well the poverty guidelines to be above that. If you're going to work and working full-time should be at eleven dollars vase. That should be your base. And then we index with inflation to make short never gets back in this political conundrum. We have right now. It shouldn't be a political football so so there's a senator making case raising the minimum wage. But he's also making a case the kind of fifteen dollars. An hour is untenable so so is this about like mansion lacking political courage or is it that everyone else is sort of lacking good political sense. I don't know. I think one way that joe mentioned can be could be described At least You know in his own way of thinking is is that he tries to be pragmatic about everything I think that clip right there. Examples the way that the joe that's intervention. I guess it tries to tries to to hedge between two different sides and try to try to find the middle between two different arguments so I think that that you know. That's just one example of many That you'd hear from him for dave. I kinda love that. It's almost hard for you. To keep calling him. Senator mansion that if you slip into joe because that suggested that he must be sort of a. I live near west. Virginia but not in west. Virginia it suggests we he might be kind of a friendly guy. Pleasant person to be around. Is that part of his charm relative to the huge margin by which he is reelected regularly. Right well i mean. I i think that you know i've been trying to catch myself as a matter of fact an glad. You pointed that out but Yeah i mean. I think that you know. The senators very personable I i think he's really approachable You know a. I think a and you. You mentioned these. These large margins. I i think it's it's it's important to point out that. In two thousand eighteen you know he had a a primary challenger anthology and swearing jin a very progressive Candidate one point thirty percent of the vote. And i think that for a lot of people here in the state that was a moment where people realize that maybe he wasn't able to be taken down in his in his seat but was definitely a a realization that there was a movement I guess in a direction other than him. Maybe even against him so You know when when when people talk about you know Senator mansion security in washington and in the senate. I think that that's very complicated. Answer in in maybe not sort of a yes or no whether or not you save. I'm i'm wondering about this difference that we hear between kind of pragmatic bipartisan reach across the aisle senator mansion. In the way that he self describes versus senator mitch mcconnell saying look a hundred percent of our people are together and we are all trying to stop the biden agenda for moving forward again. Does that suggest that that mentioned really is pragmatic court is he not realizing the senate that he's currently part of as opposed to you know maybe a senate that differently twenty or thirty or forty years ago. Well i'm not so sure about that. I mean again back to back to the beginning. It's like you know i i. I said that. You know senator mansion Has to come back in. Justify everything to the people less regina and i think it's important to realize that he is the only statewide democrat in the state. As now i mean west. Virginia's of an extremely red state at this point and leans conservative On most issues. And i think that you know Senator manchin has always kept in mind. you know what what the the will of of west virginia has been like And the way that his constituency is leaned That's not to say that you know. He's voted a counter to that at all or or counter to a wider group of democrats in their priorities. But i think it's important to keep in mind the way that the state looks here in west virginia And i think that you know with all this national media attention on senator mentioned that this point there's a lot of people that i see either on twitter or i talked to in person and they're they're kind of flabbergasted by the you know the the amount of its engine all this is getting because mansion as always been a character to To sorta complicate things or or to run counter to what Most people would expect you know just given his political affiliation. So i'm just wondering for west virginians if if it's also surprising to find yourselves as the fulcrum state the focus of so much national attention. Yeah i mean. I think that you know And i'll i'll speak for other other reporters here. i mean. I think a lot of us feel like we're the the joe manchin whispers when when at the same time it's it's it's not It's not as complicated to people here. as it is to the to the national media but at the same time. That's not to say that there's not a lot of people here that that that are fascinated by the amount of power that he's wielded in the the effect that he's had on on the function of the senate and And legislation as a whole dave as southerner myself. I appreciate your your wisdom that like you know. It's not that complicated national media. Dave message is a senior reporter for west virginia public broadcasting. And thanks for coming to do a little. Bit of senator manchin whispering with me today. They.

"We just talked about vice president harris's visit to mexico and guatemala where she focused her visit on preventing migration toward the us but she rarely touched on some of the root causes of immigration from the region including rampant violence due to the decades. Long war on drugs in mexico. More than two hundred fifty thousand people have died from violence since two thousand six and more than sixty one thousand disappeared. Many of the guns used by organized crime groups in mexico come from the united states and as our next guest has been reporting the network of gun smuggling into mexico is leaving thousands dead in. Its wake here with me now. Yawn grillo a journalist based in mexico city. An author of blood gun money how america arms gangs and cartels yawn great to have you great to be here all right so i want to begin by setting the foundation. Tell us how the gun industry in the us. is peculiar in the space. Sure so in. The united states has by far the biggest firearms retail market in the world is about three hundred ninety three million guns aids billion hands if what if the last countess party more than four hundred million guns now which is more than the next twenty five countries combined. So that's you know waiting for the nowhere else. But what is the legal retail market. You have a parallel black balk in firearms Guns being moved around to different places to criminals. And it's from this black market. That guns are flow over the southern border to mexico and to be on to more than one hundred thirty different countries. And this is the straw purchasing that you write about sure. So there's like four different methods the guns move from this legal firearms market to the illegal market of the straw purchasing. Where you pay somebody with a clean record to go and buy a gun It's not actually a crime of straw purging. it's a crime of lying on the full and most people already given probation for that. Even when they're buying large amounts of ak47's ar fifteen these kind of guns directly for cartels. There's also people abusing the private sale. Loophole is zero and buying guns with no paperwork. A tool and these people getting guns through theft or through. Ghost guns. And i will say by gunned in parts and assembling them here in mexico now positive latin america. I feel like when we talk about smuggling we talk about the drug war. The presumption is always that it is something bad in the south moving across the border into the us. But part of what is so counterintuitive about what you give us. Here is that the smuggling goes from those. Us guns south. How is it that the smugglers managed that. Read the this smothering certainly two ways in this you know you do have large amounts of drugs going north cocaine crystal meth heroin sentinel still marijuana but who said this. Huge amounts of farms going south. And we're talking about estimated numbers of more than two hundred thousand firearms every year. So the last last decade like to more than two million guns goings the hands of criminals including the most violent cartels. Now once you get to the southern border it's quite easy to drive in south to scientists quite easy really to bring drugs north. I mean only an estimated twenty percent the surf the drugs being smuggled north or actually captured the other eighty percent. Make it through into American drug consumers. So you drive south Often an i did. What interview with one gun smothering prison instead of what he was going every weekend in buying a off if teams and our guns from gun shows imbalanced area and he was hiding them in cuckoo's at fridges and taking them over the border and then paying off a cartel for the right to Move over the passage and taking them down and sending them to various coated affiliates in the chihuahua area. So how is it that i would know that. These guns weren't just purchased at a gun store in mexico way in mexico. There's only one store in the entire country selling new guns that stores here in mexico city where i am right now is run by the army to go in there. You have to hand in your cell phone and go through a bunch metal detectors. Bela dug into prisoner or something And then you arrive dad. You need like seven types of id including a letter from your boss. A clean criminal record So there are some guns acquired there by security companies. I fooled by the criminals referred to the united states. That's that the a the biggest method of getting guns. There are some firearms which are stolen hair or league from security forces or there's one gun center. I interviewed who was a selling guns onto the streets that had been seized from criminals. But if you look at the numbers of big majority Coming from the united states. So what does any of this have to do with vice president harris's trip to guatemala and to mexico this weekend and what she was trying to do there will in this same and river of firearms that goes into mexico so goes down to central america to honduras el salvador. And you've seen there at times. They become violent countries in the world and huge amount of killing a lot of people from honduras el salvador guatemala and from mexico who are asking for refugee status in the united states a fleeing various a- violence and when you look at these cases and the number is a very high motive days and you can see people who have you know. There's there's one person who i interviewed who was being coward along the migrant trial because she'd been paralyzed from the waist down in a shootout and literally a husband and afraid would take anti to carry her another guy sheltered both legs people who've suffered very brutal crimes and threats and if the united states wants to reduce this northward flow. It would help. The united states takes responsibility as well for saying well. These guns are flying down and being part of this so when kamala harris addressed The public in guatemala already with is saying do not come to tonight states to know. Go there There was a fairly about people asking this question. What about the united states rolled.

"Issue corruption. The conversation that i had with president. John tate today was very frank and very candid and i think this is a quality that he and i appreciate in each other following all of this is diana beltran with the watchdog group. The washington office on latin america. She said harris is right to focus on corruption. And unfortunately over the last several years where you've seen across the region including one tamala has been a backlash against anti anti impunity efforts and increasingly actions by corrupt elites to undermine democracy and the rule of law so as long as we're on the subject explain in simple terms how corruption actually reduces the impact usa to central america when we talk about corruption in guatemala in central america. That we're not talking about a few bad apples of few corrupt government officials that accept bribes. But what we're talking about is systems that have been put in place where corrupt elites and in the case of guatemala increasingly tied to criminal groups have taken hold of government institutions and have used their positions of power to enrich themselves by embezzling millions of public funds at the expense of the majority of the population in a regionally. You're talking around. Thirteen billion that i believe is lost a year to corruption. That means that there's no money. For education building a better healthcare system infrastructure it impacts the ability of governments to respond to natural disasters or climate change impacts security and impacts every aspect of daily life And is that thirteen billion dollars. Just guatemala or all three countries in the northern triangle. That's regionally for central america. So we hear about the three countries of the northern triangle Guatemala el salvador honduras. The people from those countries are most likely to try to enter the us but vice. President harris is visiting only. Guatemala was a talent is in central. America are immense right now. One relations between the biden administration and will kelly government in el salvador very tens. This is a government in el salvador. That has repeatedly taken steps to attack the rule of law to concentrate power in the hands of executive aaron dismantle any real system check and balance in the case of honduras. You know over the last year so the. Us department of justice has been investigating investigated and convicted the president's brother for drug trafficking so it sounds like basically you're saying guatemala may be corrupted. It's the most likely government where vice president harris could get some traction cooperation. I think they started with guatemala by default not by design but i would say that if corruption and the rule of law is not front and center in discussions between the us government and the guatemalan government. That trip could do more damage than good. And i say this because since twenty. Nineteen when the u. n. Lead commission to tackle corruption was dismantled by the previous administration in guatemala. You've seen a consistent effort and actions by the government and by corrupt political and economic elites to dismantle the advances that had been made in the anti-corruption effort. How then can vice president harris hope to help build a model with guatemala. That might show the way forward and stemming migration unfortunately i think the us different administrations have often turned their attention to the region whenever they perceive a crisis and then attention wanes and shifts elsewhere. These are long term challenges. These are deep structural challenges that are going to require a long term sustainable approach and so you know if the administration is committed to helping these societies address these structural challenges. Then we need to commit for the long haul. Adriana beltran is with the washington office on latin america. she's been telling us about the challenges vice president harrison. The white house face on harris's first aren't policy trip to central america adriana. Thank you very much. thank you for. Having sunday's presidential race in peru remains too close to call. It's been an intensely contested election between right wing candidate. Keiko fujimori and popular opponent. Pedro casio the world's latin. America correspondent valencia reports from whose capital. Lima if you watch into these two scenes in downtown lima early this morning you might thought both candidates.

"It's official donald. Trump is no longer the president of the united states. As i speak. Joe biden and kamala harris are being inaugurated are being sworn in to their positions and we are about to enter a very new era of national politics of federal politics. I don't expect that it will be easy. In any way we have over-simplified our problems in the sense that we have blamed many of our deep systemic problems that predated trump. We have blamed many of those things on him including police. Brutality mass incarceration when those things were fully entrenched before he ever took office. But i want to say. And i want to talk about this this one thing today. I wanna say the one reason why. I'm going to have a serious degree of grace and patients with both joe biden and kamala harris. That i think a year ago. I probably would not have offered. Had the two of them been sworn in but a lot has happened over the past year. Let me tell you why. I'm going to have grace as they began this extremely difficult journey. Let me unpack and explain it. This is shaun king. You're listening to the breakdown. The breakdown the breakdown. If you've ever listened to this podcast or if you follow me on social media you've ever seen or heard me on the campaign trail for bernie sanders you know that. I've been a huge huge critic of joe biden and in particular. I've been a huge critic of his is policies and history and and kind of problematic past on issues of mass incarceration the war on drugs and policing and win this presidential campaign particularly we go all the way back almost two years now on the democratic primaries i started <hes> there was no coronavirus pandemic. There had been no attack on the american capital and the four hundred thousand plus people who've now died over the past nine months they were they were all alive and what has happened to our nation over the past year truly makes it arguably one of the most difficult years in modern american history of certainly over the past few generations at the very least. It's just been an unspeakably difficult year. And the truth. Is that all of the things that made twenty twenty so hard as we saw just continued into twenty twenty one now with trump out of office and with him off of twitter and i. That's no small thing. I i wasn't. I was on break from the podcast when he was booted from twitter and didn't get really didn't get a chance to really unpack it but having him off of twitter is damn near as big as having him out of the white house. Twitter was his superpower and with him no longer their misinformation and hate and so much other things so many other things just plummeted all over social media particularly on twitter. He he we now. Fully understand was the epicenter of hate and misinformation on that platform. And when you remove him all of a sudden so many other negative metrics plummeted as well now hate and racism and bigotry. Don't disappear when you remove him from twitter. But having trump out of office without the power of that position about the power to appoint judges and supreme court justices and cabinet members and white house staffers in without the power of executive actions without him and his incompetent team overseeing the a horrible response to the coronavirus pandemic a competent team can now be put in place and so a lot of the things that made twenty twenty difficult. Some of those things continue into twenty twenty one though with trump out of office his administration out of office and with him off of twitter. I think there are some things that will get better with that sale. Joe biden comma. Harris are literally about to begin. What i think will be the most difficult presidency in our lifetime

Joe biden joe biden trump Trump kamala harris donald two today shaun king both a year ago one reason one thing united past year states
