"I North Highland Sacramento. Released information and updates about Corona virus, go to kqed dot orc. It's all things considered from NPR news. I'm Ari Shapiro and I'm Mary Louise Kelly. The Biden administration is under a lot of pressure to increase Cove in 19 vaccine supplies today, Vice President Harris held an event at a Washington D. C grocery store with an eye to the next challenge getting vaccines and two arms NPR White House correspondent Tamara Keith reports. Like many grocery stores, this giant in Southeast D. C. Has a pharmacy nestled in the corner. And the pharmacy, which is giving out covert vaccines is now more popular than ever. We have people lining up all day. Learning the vaccine pharmacists Sameer Belisle served as a guide for Vice President Harris is visit. This is the easy part, right? Yeah, because people way don't have enough to get the people who want it. That's the case all over the country for now, but already, the Biden administration is preparing for a time when people are going to need to be persuaded to roll up their sleeves and get their shots. Harris has been particularly focused on this challenge in communities of color, where people have been disproportionately affected by the Corona virus, and also tend to be more hesitant about the vaccine. There have been many theories about populations that are experiencing vaccine hesitancy for legitimate reasons that are based on historical experiences. That we should never forget. But she argued there are access issues to vaccines need to be available in convenient and trusted locations. And Belial added, people may just not know what to expect, especially after the second dose. They just don't know. And for the most part, I think way all kind of don't know. Alright. It was then time for 69 year old Brenda Thompson to get her second dose. While the vice president and a trailing press corps watched is kind of weird to do it in front of these cameras, isn't it? I know I've got the same one. Somebody's gonna hold my hand. I would, but, you know, I gotta make this ship art Harris shared a bit of her own experience, one that is similar to what many people describe after their second shot. She went to work the day after, And then about mid.

"Much you watched television today. One of the Luxuries that I have being a nice I talk show hostess. I get tow watch things that are going on. And of course, they watch the opening. They weren't the opening arguments who is the The debate over the constitutionality of the Trump trial. 2.0 And Bruce Castor, apparently who was the lead lawyer? According to some reports, are tonight, saying the president's not happy with him sort of a rambling opening statement. I didn't quite understand it, to be honest with you, Um Eventually he got around to making some interesting legal arguments, but he buried the lead. That is for sure. And he just went on. And you was talking about it as a child, listening to ever Dirkson records his home And that's what a lawyer does when they try to connect with the jury. But this is a fairly sophisticated jury. And this is, you know, you know, talking about some some case, you know, south of the Mason Dixon line 30 years ago. Wow, The lawyer would look at the the the jurors. No, of all the first name and you know, and say something like this. Now, you know, when my client gets his money from the insurance company, it's not gonna cost you a thing. It's just going to cost the insurance company hit me right on that goober. Okay, That's right. That's right. Um, you can't do this anymore. I used to make fun of Southern lawyers. I apologize for that, anyway. Well, you know, I'm a northerner. So I get to goof around a little bit. We I don't know how much you watched today. But if you didn't watch much at all, you pretty much did, according to President Biden's press spokesperson, Jen Psaki. The But what the what the president did. This is cut four rub. I think it's clear from his schedule from his intention. He will not spend too much time watching the proceedings of any time. Yep. So that was a quick pipe. Essentially, Nope. Didn't didn't watch much. So which I would expect. So let's get back to the calls. I want to hear from all of you. 617254 10 30 Triple 89 to 1930. You know my suspicion. If you had to bet money, this is going to come out similar to Trump trial 1.0. But there's always a possibility. I guess that there could be a surprise. I don't know. Let's go to Jeffrey in Waltham. Jeffrey's going to start us off this hour. Welcome, Jeffrey. How are you tonight? Oh, well, and I'm really fascinated by this whole thing. Although I have quite mixed feelings about today's proceedings. Tell me what you want. Go right ahead. Well, first of all, my underlying concern is that the bottom line here seems to me to be Accountabilities. There has to be accountability for what happened is a capital. Okay? And I think that President Trump who could have called off Those Attackers. Okay? They knew they were he knew. They were loyal to him, and he could have called them off. Didn't send out enough National guard protection and I think he was complicit in what happened. But let me let me jump in for a second. If I can. Okay, first of all, if I could There will be accountability. There will be accountability. They'll be accountability for all these folks have been arrested. What's about 130 or 140? People have been arrested. Those of the people that broke through the barriers those of the people who struck police officers. Those of the people who broke glass smashed indoors and all of that, so there will be accountability there. Now the question is, is what accountability should the president have? And right? There was this interview over the weekend. I played it last hour from Mark Meadows, the former chief of staff of the White House. Now I always like to assume people tell the truth when they're speaking publicly. Particularly when they're speaking about things that are factual. Okay and Meadows if you heard last hour said that the White House had reached out to the authorities on several occasions and offered you no more. Um most support, um and and also one of the caller said that the FBI apparently knew that It was going to be trouble. As early as late December. So my question is, what if we're going to do accountability? Um Donald Trump is facing his accountability in the Senate. I also think there should be accountability off the head of the FBI. What to the FBI? Oh, I agree. Did they go if they they knew that there was trouble coming down the road? I think that the head of the FBI Had an obligation going to sit with the president. Say. Look, Mr President, number one. I think you're putting yourself in a dangerous situation physically, okay, because we're gonna be a huge crowd, and we're hearing it that in that crowd, there is some groups. Who are intent on committing mayhem. In Washington, D C. You should be assed far away from this as possible. I think that's That is the minimum what the FBI director should have done Assuming that he had the information that I think it was. Susan alluded to Mm. So there's a lot of accountability. I'm agreeing with you. I'm agreeing with you is what I'm saying, Okay? And another thing that bothered me about the whole trial. Is it Since this Woz a nim Peach mint trial? Why was not Chief Justice Roberts called into his eyes. Well, first of all, if chief Justice Roberts if he had wanted to preside All he would have to do is call the Senate. The majority leader or or called Vice President Harris, who's technically the president of the Senate. And say to her, um Under Article two, Section four. Of the United States Constitution. I am the officer who should preside at this at this trial. Um and He apparently either did not reach out. Um Or or or remain silent. I don't know if he called anybody. I don't know if he if he opted out of it, I don't know if he was invited. T o to do it. And and by the way, it's like his quote from sex. Actually, I quoted the wrong Runnicles met. Let me correct myself. If you don't mind. Article one, Section three. Paragraph 123456, the Senate shall the sole power to try all impeachments when sitting for that purpose. There should be an older affirmation when the president of the United States has tried The chief justice shall preside. Now there are some who were saying Well, he's no longer the president of the United States. So that's why Robinson's and presiding But this is a trial of a at least a former president of United States. You can have that both ways. If you think it's constitutional I think that John Roberts Should be in the big chair, not Patrick laid. Yeah, I just don't know exactly. I went basis. He opted out evidently that it was a former president on trial. But that Z, you know, either way, if that's true, which, obviously, I assume it is. Does he? Roberts has not issued any sort of an opinion that says, Hey, I think this is perfectly permissible Constitutionally, even though I'm not there. I'm okay. Or he should have should have given some guidance, I think, but Who am I? I'm not John Roberts. Yeah. Always make one last comment, And that's this. I think that removal is not a precondition for disqualifications. Well, l a garage which struck the journey, Jonathan Turley and I will disagree with you on that. But you have some lawyers on your side, Jeff. I knew on yours. But the point the fact of the matter is it is a moot point now, because at some point in the future, not maybe in your lifetime or my lifetime. There will be another president who will face a similar situation and that President might be a democratic president..

"The broadcast of what you just heard in that opening that we put together. Was not a Republican and Democrat doing it out over a covert relief. It was Vice president Harris and Democrat Joe Manchin. Doing it out over covert relief. And as you heard eating, which, obviously Joe mansions is significant vote. He said He saw the interview and I can't believe it. So The vice president, United States. Is in West Virginia. Going after a Democratic senator from West Virginia. On an issue that should have bipartisan support called covert relief, and you have to ask yourself what are the politics of this one? When the American people need the help and fan before he went on the air? I asked you what was going on here? What is going on here? Well, it's terrible politics J. I would say it's political incompetence. If you ask me because Look, Joe Manchin is someone that from the very beginning, has said that he wants a covert package. But yet he's talking reasonably about it. J He's he wants the dollars that were already passed in covert stimulus to actually reach the people that were needed. So when they pass another package is the people that Get the help that's needed. But let me focus in really quickly J on the political calculation here because by pushing away one of the 50 votes that they need in the United States Senate, it's sending the message. They're gonna have to have Republican votes. And I will tell you, Jay in a vacuum Republican voters senators are willing to pass a covert stimulus package. But here's what's happening in the United States House of Representatives this week. J. They're beginning a budget reconciliation process to move covert stimulus with only 51 votes. So look, the only way to look at this. J is they don't want Republican votes there. They're using a strategy that doesn't plan to get Republican votes. And yet they're chasing away one of the Democrat votes that we need. Jay. The only thing I can call that political incompetence, and I'm thinking about it. And, of course, and that's is the Senate's preparing for an impeachment trial. And instead of focusing on covert relief with the American people, people need their focusing on an impeachment trial in a person. It's not president anymore. Yeah, well, we've commented on this several times. J. I mean, you've got the president. United States who's being in impeached by the House was no longer the president of the United States. The Senate does not have jurisdiction, but they're revving up for a fight in the Senate. There's gonna be a trial. The House managers air coming over and they working overtime to do the impossible and that is to impeach. President who has left office instead of focusing on covert relief and then fighting with their own party, with Kamala Harris going to West Virginia without even Joe Manchin, knowing it and disparaging his state in his presence, telling people that they're suffering that they're hungry, that they're scavengers. What a thing to say about the people in West Virginia. But the irony of all this is everybody agrees in Washington. We need to get the next Cove in relief package through Logan is joining us today, by the way. On and then everybody agrees and you've heard this on your radio broadcast. Covert relief is necessary. Economic relief is necessary, and they're fighting with each other, not Republican Democrat. This social dysfunction that has already begun 10 days into this fighting through the media, of course, which is what our is, It seems to be. You know, you can't just you take this year. The right down the street from each other. Even come. Yeah. You're right. Joe Manchin of the same party. I mean, on the line of all of them, Joe Mansion has been the one they always did talk about is like, you know, he's like a Democrat light. You know, I don't know, but My girl, but we want your thoughts. You heard my rant about media last Friday and I feel the same way. This is weaponizing media still because you could take over the airwaves in certain areas and bypass your local representation representatives who really know what's going on in your own home state. Especially right now, when those areas really could use the relief of the phone lines are open. Yeah, I'll tell you what, we'll take your calls. 864 31 telling me taste something else we're gonna do. Um, we've got a lot of you watching and we want you to stay engaged, so we're not gonna take a TV audience. Watching the Facebook social media YouTube.

"Who was in charge again as i've said many times from the campaign until now the differences between trump and biden could not be more noticeable even based on the analysts on tv or everything. I saw on social media. I think we all felt better. Now that there is real experience back in the white house all breathe just a bit easier. I mean when you really get down to it when you think about it. It was basically in escape from a four year hostage. Situation trump controlled our lives for four years with his unpredictability in the way he always made everything a culture issue. You simply could not escape him. He came up in conversation with friends and family a lot and whether you supported him or not became a true point of division now we have real human beings who are decent empathetic back in charge. Not only that but with the diversity biden is bringing in the white house. Looks more like america than has in quite some time. I have to say it really hit me when vice president harris with swearing in those three new senators. You had a latino man from california a black man from georgia and a jewish man from georgia. Who's like thirty three. And they were all being sworn in by the first female the first black in the first south asian vice president. That's what america is supposed to be. That's what those terrorist tried to stop two weeks ago when they stormed the capital. They were afraid because the administration didn't look as much like them and that made them so scared that they got angry. They got so angry that they turn that into an action but we won in today lost honestly even from the point when everybody started showing up to the inauguration. The people in the crowd behind biden wearing masks. You could just feel that if you could just feel that things were different there. Wasn't anybody bullying these people around into net wearing them and vice president harris even war one when she was on the senate floor. What a concept. I also realize until last night that it was fifty years ago. Yesterday that jfk was inaugurated. He's a personal hero or personal fascination of mine so i thought that was cool. Another thing i want to get out of the way right away is that yes. I'll be referring to joe and kamla as president and vice president more today than i said president trump ever and yes. That does seem biased. However like i said a while back. When i initially addressed in i call people by their title when they act like they're title. Trump never acted presidential. So i never felt like. He deserved to be referred to as president. In fact that's what i mean by. This show is more informal than regular news because even by using those titles you normalize trump. What trump did what trump was. Were not normal and. We can't think that they were. They were awful disgraceful. And we can't ever let that happen again now onto president biden and his busy. I two days in office yesterday evening. He signed fifteen executive orders in two executive actions. So what's the difference between the executive orders and executive actions. Well an executive order is legally binding so it means more an executive action on the other hand is basically just symbolic so. Let's go over those but be warned. I'm not always sure. Which ones are the orders in. Which ones are the actions when you read about them. The news media treats them like they're interchangeable and they're just not at all. There were about nine different categories of things that biden addressed. I in terms of masks. He signed an order requiring masks and social distancing all federal buildings in all federal property and by all federal employees and contractors anti even more masked ball signing the bill which sent a huge message other orders included stopping the united states from withdrawing from the world health organization which is a great thing for people worldwide extending applause on student loan payments and housing foreclosures. And actually even saw just now that they put student loan interest at zero percent. So it won't be accumulating interest for however long it goes for. There are several big ones on climate. First rejoining the paris climate accord. Which is making ted cruz. Superman about people in pittsburgh because that was the example trump used when he pulled out of the agreement second revoking the permit for building the keystone pipeline. Which is an action than i didn't. Even know is being considered finally required reviews of trump's policies. That got rid of or weekend. Protections for federal lands as well as a review of the cuts and regulations about fossil fuel emissions. If we're being honest you've heard biden and his team talk more about climate change in the past two days even just yesterday than trump did in four years. This next order was a fun. One president biden revoked. Trump's national emergency declaration about the border wall which means that money that was supposed to be going to other programs will actually go to those programs again. Instead of a wall in mexico supposed to pay for that it also stopped. The building of any new wall until review is done to see how taxpayer money is being spent on the project. Speaking of provoking he also revoked. The muslim bane quote unquote which bans people from seven. Muslim-majority countries. This is the one that i suspect is more of an action than an order. Biden ordered his cabinet to preserve and protect dhaka. The deferred action for childhood arrivals which is relief for hundreds of thousands of people who lived in america all of their life who are technically undocumented since they were brought here by their parents when they were very young staying on that subject of undocumented immigrants there was an order from trump. That said all eleven million people who are undocumented in the. Us were priorities for getting deported in biden revoked that order as well and instructed the department of homeland security to review their enforcement priorities. Actually the last ones here are related to immigration of some sort for the census biden order that every person in america should be counted. You know like it says in the constitution trump tried to exclude undocumented people even though they still do move here which is what. The census is trying to figure out. And lastly this one seems like more proposal than in order. The president issued an order that proposes legislation that would give green cards and a path to citizenship for every undocumented persons. Who was living here before the start of this year before january. First twenty twenty one now all of that was just a one today if he hasn't already done so by the time you hear this president biden plans on signing ten more executive orders as the huffington post points out. Some are more specific than others. The specific ones include things like requiring the department of education in department of health and human services to create new guidelines for reopening schools ordering osha to issue new standards to protect workers from covid ordering female to fully reimbursed dates for various expenses. They had from covid and using the national guard to open and operate one hundred mass vaccination clinics since it sounding like trump and pence left them absolutely in terms of distribution plan and biden also issued in order to develop online dashboards to offer. Kobe related. data. He wants that data to get as detailed as information about your specific county. Another big one was using the defense production act to force quote unquote companies to make supplies. That are necessary for covid related products. These are things like needles and the solution that mixes with the medicine part of the vaccine. Because that's all that's all part of it in another big. One is n ninety five masks which are going to be important in defending against these new mutations. Some of the broader orders are ordering the cdc to work with states update their pandemic plans requesting the creation of a plan to figure out how to speed up development and distribution of therapeutic treatments like remdesivir for example creating public education campaigns about the vaccine to make people more comfortable with them and reminding the different agencies involved about the disparities based on race geography disability etc. To make sure the vaccine is distributed equally. I'm sure this is to prevent people from buying their spot in line. Jumping the line and so we don't forget about the minority communities that have been most affected by this but are also usually forgotten about in these programs overall. It's been a very busy. Twenty four to thirty six hours biden officially sworn in india not necessarily a presidential historian or anything like that. But i would wager that. This has been probably the most productive two days. I two days in any presidency. it has to be. I mean they're also already negotiating a new nuclear deal with russia while also reviewing that cyber attack that i talked about maybe a month ago. I mean maybe it's just. Because i pay such close attention to this stuff but everything seems different already like they are actual plans being made in actions being taken to help people with covid. It doesn't feel like we're just on our own anymore. And he's also trying to weed out the discrimination white supremacism that exists at many many levels of government. And i mean come on compared to four years ago. They didn't even know how to turn on the lights. For god's sake they literally could not find the light switch in the meeting rooms that they were gathering in. They had to speak in the dark and feel their way out of the room. I just picture like one of those ghost hunters shows where they have the night vision on. But it's actually pitch dark for the people investigating so we can see they can't. That's just how i picture this whole thing going down. It really just shows that elections do have consequences. So i this next door get it as soon as published the episode on tuesday here. I was feeling good about saying. Oh yeah they were vetting. All these people these national guard members and they haven't found anyone with any ties to extremism. I hit published on the episode and then boom twelve national guard. Members get removed from their duties for the inauguration. Yeah two of them. Were relieved for possible links to right-wing extremist movements in this is all according to the new york times. The two who were directly linked to the extremists made quote inappropriate comments or sent inappropriate texts according to defense officials. The other ten that were taken out the detail were apparently removed For reasons unrelated to recent events in the capital end quote. I find that hard to believe. But hey i'm not complaining. I'm glad that they were thorough. Enough to find these people according to this article out of the one hundred people that the fbi has arrested so far related to that incident. Six of them have had military ties of some kind. But yeah what timing on that story in. This part isn't actually related to the people getting taken off the detail. But i just want to mention that. The story was behind a paywall on the new york times website. In case you want to get around that without subscribing. There's a website called print. Friendly as in you. Neighbor is just nice unfriendly. And you can copy the u. r. l. link for any story pasted in on print friendly and then basically transforms it into a pdf. Even if it's behind a paywall just a life hack tip.

Welcome to the 59th presidential inauguration, where in just a few moments, Joe Biden and Kamila Harris will take their solemn oath. This ceremony is the culmination of 244 years of a democracy. It is the moment when leaders brought to the stage by the will of the people promised to be faithful. To our constitution to cherish it and defend it. It is the moment when they become as we all should be guardians of our country. Have we become too jaded to accustom to the ritual of the passing of the torch of democracy? To truly appreciate what a blessing and a privilege it is to witness this moment? I think not. Two weeks ago, when an angry violent mob stage an insurrection and desecrated this temple of our democracy, it awakened us to our responsibilities as Americans. This is the day when our democracy picks itself up, brushes off the dust and does what America always does goes forward as a nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all This'll conveyance of a sacred trust between our leaders and our people takes place in front of this Shining capital dome for a reason. And it did, and it will. "Let's just get right to it as I am going solo today and the news of the day spread across the newspapers of America. Is the fact that Attorney General Bob Barr Went to the White House yesterday had a sit down with the chief of staff Meadows. And informed him that he saw no basis for fraud claims. Hey, indicated that in those instances that were brought to the attention of the Department of Justice and the FBI, there was not enough fraudulence that would change the outcome of this election. From President elect Joe Biden and vice oppression and elect to Harris. To potentially reinstall President Donald Trump and vice president Pence for another four years. Now. Clearly, I don't think anybody would indicate that Bob Barr was not a loyal attorney general. I think if you were to compare him to Ah, boo regard who he had replaced Jeff Sessions. Whoever was the first major figure to support citizen Donald Trump when he was running for the Republican nomination against 17. Others. That he was taking on. But you remember, he recused himself is the result of the Russian probe, and it was all downhill with Jeff Sessions. When bar eventually replaced him. It was considered at least by Democrats. That Attorney General Bar was He lapped talk sicko fan toady of the President Donald Trump, doing what the president desired to an attorney general who most times should remain independent in autonomous and making those kind of legal decisions. But in this case, his comments came as other Republicans separated themselves from the continued presidential allegations about complaints about the election. In Georgia, it has become contentious. The president is expected to be attending a reality rally this sanity on behalf of both the Republican senatorial candidates who are in a runoff election against two Democrats. The whole nation is watching that because the future of the U S Senate will be determined. Will the schmuck will the putts? Chuck E. Cheese Huma remain the minority leader? I hope I hope I hope God forbid. Oh, God hush him. Don't allow this, but they smoked uploads Chuck e cheese, Huma suddenly become the majority leader. So you would have President Joe Biden. You would have Vice President Harris in the waiting Then you would have the majority leader. I can't even say it. I want to bite my tongue They smoked. It puts Chuck e Cheese Huma and, yes, Pelosi, who survived a potential coup data. From current Congressman Joaquim and do harm himself. Jeffries, who was from East New York, Brownsville can r C. It was expected that he might try to sack up Pelosi, who lost so many seats to the Republicans unexpectedly. And yet, boy that would be a formidable Democratic majority president, vice president and majority leader and minority leader. Let's open up the phone lines. Does this mean it's over? As attorney General Bar has said, in the limited amount of follow up that they've done? In attempting to find fraud in the way votes what tabulated counted on eventually recounted, they saw nothing out there that would change the outcome of this election. 1 808 4 rate W A. B C That's 1 808 489222. Then later on this half hour, we are going to discuss When a transition of power took place the first time in the United States and you know everybody is saying or what? Trump has to cooperate. It has to be a complete transition of power. He has to attend the inauguration and let me tell you something wouldn't be the first time a president in attend the inauguration. In fact, the last time that happened of note it was caused called the Revolution of 1800. Around it was, it was called a revolution in the country. And remember, we had just had a revolution in 17 76. So stop this nonsense that it's never happened before. This would be the first time this would be oldest Karachi, a Shanda to the nation. It's happened before. Virtually at the birth of the nation. 1 808 48 w A. B C. That's 1 808 489222. Let's go to Mike, Who's calling from New York your turn to be heard here at WNBC, Mike.
