House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has ordered flags lowered to halfstaff today at the U .S. Capitol. Julie Ryan reports. In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, McCarthy said he directed the move to honor the 13 brave American heroes who died tragically during the U .S. withdrawal from Afghanistan two years ago. Republicans have strongly criticized President Biden's handling of the sudden U .S. exit as the Taliban seized control of the country in 2021. I'm Julie Ryan. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu is speaking out after a shooting that injured seven people this morning during a parade treasured community event has been disrupted by acts of violence from those who had nothing to do with the event. And there's no absolutely no excuse. The shooting happened around 745am during the juver parade, which is part of the city's Caribbean American Carnival. Police say the victims were taken to local hospitals with non life threatening injuries and two people are under arrest. Officials say the rest of today's events will go on as scheduled for the 50th anniversary of the celebration. A shooting at a high school football game in Choctaw, Oklahoma has left one person dead and three others injured. Maybe that of a toddler who was swept away by last weekend's flash flooding based on the physical description of the child and the clothing found on the child. "Trump is set to visit the US Mexico border this week, just days after Vice President Kamala Harris made her own visit to Texas. Both trips come at a time when many Republicans are describing the situation at the border as a quote crisis with unauthorized crossings at their highest level in decades. NPR's Joel Rose covers immigration and joins us now. Hi, Joel. Hey, Sarah. What do we know about Trump's upcoming visit? Well. He's expected to visit the Rio Grande Valley in Texas on Wednesday, along with Texas Governor Greg Abbott and a group of congressional Republicans, and they're essentially trolling the Biden administration by highlighting the high number of border crossings this year. Here's some of what Trump said last night at a rally in Ohio Illegal aliens are Overrunning their borders. Nobody's ever seen anything like it. Our poor borders was so perfect. They were so good. The rhetoric from that rally should sound very familiar to anyone who's followed former President Trump and the way he often talks about immigrants as a threat. And a burden. It was her first trip to the border since President Biden named her to lead the administration's effort to stem migration from Central America. I would say it's political incompetence. If you ask me because Look, Joe Manchin is someone that from the very beginning, has said that he wants a covert package. But yet he's talking reasonably about it. J He's he wants the dollars that were already passed in covert stimulus to actually reach the people that were needed. So when they pass another package is the people that Get the help that's needed. But let me focus in really quickly J on the political calculation here because by pushing away one of the 50 votes that they need in the United States Senate, it's sending the message. They're gonna have to have Republican votes. And I will tell you, Jay in a vacuum Republican voters senators are willing to pass a covert stimulus package. But here's what's happening in the United States House of Representatives this week. J. They're beginning a budget reconciliation process to move covert stimulus with only 51 votes. So look, the only way to look at this. J is they don't want Republican votes there. They're using a strategy that doesn't plan to get Republican votes. And yet they're chasing away one of the Democrat votes that we need. Jay. The only thing I can call that political incompetence, and I'm thinking about it. And, of course, and that's is the Senate's preparing for an impeachment trial. And instead of focusing on covert relief with the American people, people need their focusing on an impeachment trial in a person. It's not president anymore. Yeah, well, we've commented on this several times. J. I mean, you've got the president. United States who's being in impeached by the House was no longer the president of the United States. The Senate does not have jurisdiction, but they're revving up for a fight in the Senate. There's gonna be a trial.
