jury deliberations seems to have borne this out I agree with you Ron in that the length of jury deliberations really did show how tough this was for this panel in what was so interesting about it is that whether prosecutors and defense attorneys wanted to address the elephant in the room or not and we actually did get some hint of this during jury selection race really did play a role in whether or not Robert Olson was going to end up with a full conviction on murder or not out of Radhika diverse jury handling this case yeah it was interesting that it was such a diverse jury several of those who were questioned said that they believed that police treated people of color differently but in the end it really did seem like when the final panel was seated we saw according to the juror who spoke out afterwards there was a racial divide on how people interpreted the evidence of course we did have a compromise verdict here those sorts of compromises in the jury room are always a feature of getting a verdict in challenging cases like this one and even though the Olsen verdict resulting in a compromise as you know it still took six days to get a result now one reason for that may be the juries in Georgia are not told anything about the length of sentence on any of the counts some legal experts criticize that juror should know how much time would defend against when they convict him that's the point of view is a lot of us can agree with how often does that happen that drawers kinda horse trade back and forth just to get something accomplished to get out of there you know what I've seen it twice in two years okay I've actually seen it in this case where the jurors despite having asked the question and gotten an answer didn't seem to realize that they could hang on some of the charges the murder counts which were what they were hung up on and still have those outstanding I think this jury thought that if they didn't come up with a verdict on those counts that it would just mean he got off Scot free they don't understand the prosecutors would have the ability to try it again side again last year in the text McIver case when jurors convicted him of felony murder but not malice murder what does this case tell you guys about juries convicting a police officer murder it is it is it really hard for a jury to do that it is one study of fifty one cases in Georgia officer involved deaths involving citizens during a ten year period only one conviction of those fifty one cases and the case in which resulted in a kind that was not even the shooting that was a taser death that's one more example of how difficult a task it is to get a prosecution and conviction of a police officer because juries see police as their protectors Ronnie have you heard from officers how or if this is change the way they operate I have several good friends who are in law enforcement and I talked with one of them at length about things exactly like this and yes he says it makes him very cautious and Ryan you may or may not know this they actually did in the cab county changeup the training for their officers to be aware of how to interact with the mentally ill one of the most powerful moments in that ship Olson trial was when chip also this training officer Lanny Anderson spoke he was the first one to respond after the shooting to the scene he talked about having it's not just training that is going to sort of amplify your response or dictate your response on the scene but it's also sort of who you are and we don't want an officer who's going to panic when they see a naked guy running through a parking lot Ron we haven't really heard much about of an appeal where does that stand there will be an appeal in this case but not of the sentence because Georgia judges have wide discretion over how the sentence however there will be appeal on some of the evidence decisions made by the judge during the trial all right nationally this one's going to be a I assume the big case of twenty twenty the college admissions bribery scandal Felicity Huffman took her deal got a few days in jail Lori Laughlin did not she's going to take your chances what we expect yes J. this will be the big case in twenty twenty Felicity Hoffman served fully eleven days well Lori Laughlin is now facing forty five years it's hard for her to get a not guilty verdict I think in the trial that's coming up because the man she used to put the Texan with southern cal turned it into a government informer before it was all done in the tape glory telling him if the IRS calls I will tell them I gave you the four hundred thousand for your underprivileged children foundation what's the strategy here yeah what would be the strategy there what how do you get out of this I believe there'll be a couple of lines of defense first and foremost I thought I was giving money for the school library or for a renovation of old main something like that and it Laurie Laughlin's case I believe she hopes that perhaps celebrity justice will prevail much like it did in the first OJ case there was a little bit of celebrity justice therefore Felicity Huffman too though Ron there was or she did herself a favor by throwing herself on the sword in saying I was wrong and the other department of justice of course appreciates those sort of approaches for the case she pled guilty
