"Of the theme park number two. I think that there's also some unique opportunities that you'll find here that you won't find anywhere else. And from the very beginning much like alani there has been a focus on nature the natural resources and conservation. And if you come during the right time of year which would be from usually about may through the entire summer you have an opportunity to witness and participate in something that is amazing to see because here they have the loggerhead sea turtle nesting grounds and every year. The newly hatched sea turtles are guided into the ocean by nothing other than the moonlight. No exterior lights. Were lights in the hotel windows shine. So you'll see signs everywhere talking about the dark beaches and even the color of the lights at the resort and the lack of lights elsewhere. Because the this is one of the most dense sea turtle nesting spots in the entire western hemisphere so in order to make sure that the turtles and the environment are not disrupted. You'll see that there are stakes and river ribbon walkers but through that summertime if you go down to the ocean about sunrise you'll see that in this five miles of beach that disney is responsible for. You'll be able to see. Oftentimes these baby turtles leaving their nest from the ocean. And how the the the folks from disney really pay attention to inventory in the nest and making sure the turtles get there safely and this conservation awareness there extend beyond just watching the the the sea turtles go into the ocean which is beautiful but there's also a lot of activities to help guests learn more about how to preserve sea turtle habitats. They have a turtle troop were younger. Guests can learn to identify the nesting behaviors and the tracks. And because this is on the treasure coast there the turtles are not the only endangered species are manatees as well so getting the opportunity to experience nature firsthand and close up with the little bit of disney touch on top is another great thing to see in for a lot of people. It's very much a reason to come an attractor for a lot of guests. I know what we saw that years ago. This is another reason why and how they so. Greatly integrate and educate people about nature through this resort is by talking to people about these turtles and how they go out and how to preserve them and protects them when when they do hatch that they can move safely go back to the ocean because it is an endangered species and we do need to care for nature because of how important is for so many parts of the environment and as a quick aside. I love turtles dolls and disney through the resort itself. And you can find out more when you check in has turtle conservation and outing Experiences you can participate in so you can see the loggerheads and the greens and the leatherback turtles. And just as a quick aside disney's contributed literally millions of dollars To the to the worldwide conservation fund specifically for Sea turtle conservation. And if you go into the gift shop there's actually a number of different books resources that you can purchase and take a look at And you'll see how the turtles is very heavily integrated even to design the core of the resort and as we said earlier obviously sea turtle conservation and watching the sea. Journals is not the only activity here by far. And that's why. I said at the beginning you can really pick and choose to you know. Live your own adventure here in terms of how much or how little that you want to do because as soon as you come in you are given a welcome home guide to everything. That's going on both literally inside the resort in the community hall as well as outside the resort both on the beach as well as by the pool areas and there was probably fifteen or so different events and activities that take place every day some many are free to guess others that do have varying levels of cost to them also by the way if you are a disney vacation club member you can get discounts as well and i think if you're an annual pass holder you can possibly get discounts as well because i know you can get a discount on dining so obviously there is the everything you expect a resort. There is the pool. There's the spa. There's the beach but there's a lot of one that you can find that really run. The gamut from sport related ones like shuffleboard. And does it a little cornhole court. There's ping pong. There's a pool table all locate all located right by the pool. there's also Those are all free and you could also rent bicycles. Well which assault with a small fee associated with those as. Well you go to close which is sort of the the sign up location located right by the pool but there's also things like a surf school. You can an excursion to learn how to fish in your own local lakes there's mini. There's a little miniature golf course here basketball and tennis courts as well as a small pond and field directly across the street from the resort Actually location was they. Were going to expand the resort at one point and then they decided to use it for recreation activities instead of instead as well as everything that goes on on the beaches. Well you can rent chairs. Umbrellas cabanas body boards boogie boards. Kayaks which. I wish. I could have done this time. Warner's a little bit chilly for me. And i think during times of the year you can also rent wave runners but even beyond the outdoor activities inside the community hall which is located just off the pool area. There are a number of. There's probably five different activities that take place throughout the day again from kids to adults. There are many mickey masterpieces. Disney matt photo frame memory jars canvas bags seashell painting disney pillows tile art I know you guys you probably remember. My kids are both very crafty. You guys did a bunch of these the first time that we came here and love doing those both inside the community hall as well as outside as well. do you remember doing any of those. Any of those crafts. I remember very vaguely doing a few of them. Because i know little mern and now big mern we. I always love doing craft and then having something that i can take home and also like sort of creates a memory and like something to do. So i definitely remember we did the. There's mickey tie-dye that we that we did which was really fun which they teach. It's more like a course they teach you how to do it I remember like long long time ago. The first time that we came they had like a stuffed animal. I don't think they do it anymore. But they have like a stuffed animal Little craft and they had like a shark tooth necklace craft. Which i believe they still do as well. So.

Where to Find a Truly Authentic Disney Beach Vacation

"We're going to be talking all about disney's beach resorts and we're talking about disney's i guess. Would we call them their real beach resorts all around the world. Not their photo. Beach resorts at their feet resort feats resorts like that fo- beach and we're talking about places like what disney's beach club resort would be there features are and just a little bit of background. I remember when we talked about the wave pool that was in the lagoon and outside of the polynesian and dick nunez the emad surfer who turned imagine near and when they first opened disneyworld he thought disneyworld had to compete with beach resorts in florida. And that no one would wanna go there because there wasn't a beach so they created beaches and they tried to do surfing. Didn't really work but then later. They added the pool at typhoon lagoon yet and of course they added the beach club resort and tom along they deign has a real sand bottom. But it still wasn't real and when we say beach resorts i guess. Let's put it this way in front beach resorts well all right. Well we'll get into that. So there are you may or may not know three count them three actual disney beach resorts not associated with any theme parks. And we've talked about one on this podcast in the past if you're planning summer vacation hopefully we're all going traveling this summer and you want to go to a beach resort and you love disney. We're gonna give you three amazing options for disney beach resorts and i'm putting them in my personal preference order. You're probably going to agree with my order. I would imagine start with number one. Most important will go first. Okay and that for me is alani lenny desire lani resort and spa in co alina. A wa who hawaii i do you say that. So he no or lena that. So co lena is the little town. This is a true beachfront resort in hawaii. In this episode we're going to focus on the beaches because we're talking about beach vacations. We will do more in depth on the resorts. We've already done one about our number two which will get to momentarily. But if you there's nothing really. That beats a hawaiian beach. What do you think jonah blank blank. So the beach call. Lena is you fly. Into on her lulu. And it's a really short drive right. We definitely rent a car. And i'll get into why that resort alani is right on the ocean in this really upscale town called co alina and it's a little bit of an interesting beach there because it it's very sheltered. They have storm break. So it's not very good for surfing but if you're one of those people that likes to think the ocean is a pool that has no currents at all. This might be for you. Yeah it's of funny. Because i learned somewhere along the way in my travel life that most of resort hotels on islands even barbados in that they build the hotels on the quiet side of the island. But we love waves right. We like big waves. So we'd always have to do. When i was surfing and barbados. You gotta go down to the super bowl's on the other side of the island but all the big resorts are on the calm side. If there is one and co lena's the whole point is sort of like that but actually there's four lagoons dan this strip of land in their man made so they did like you said they built breakwaters and they're sort of like a c shape. It's almost like a donut with a little cutout which is open to the ocean right. So there's water comes in. They are open to the ocean but yes. They're very calm. They're pretty large. I don't know. I don't even know how big they are. But they're big. It's not like people. Yeah and you can rent boats and sailboats. And a few things in there it can take a lot of people and then there's other upscale resorts at the neighbors of alani and there's four of these lagoons and you can walk along the waterfront the rest of the waterfront there sorta rocky so that's probably why was undeveloped in the past and then disney came along and somebody figured out. Hey we can make nice beaches here if we put these little lagoons. So it is a true. Hawaiian beachfront resort. You can swim in the beautiful pacific ocean. It faces the sunset which is really nice. But if you're going to hawaii and if you're going to alani in particular there are many other as ing beaches on oahu. Don't always need to go in a volcano. Guess you don't need to go. What is oh. Amelia wrote a song as a kid going to hawaii in volcano which would be the big island of hawaii not on oahu. But if you're going to oahu and you're going to alani it's a beautiful beach Franck resort will get into all the rest of it and another episode because es cell using storm along. Bay is a good waterpark. Alani puts it to shame. But we're going to save that for a future episode. Pure here for storm. Along is now an official disney waterpark. A resort it sort of water park for among resorts compared to any other pool. That is you know typically pool with a slide. It's pretty much a waterpark. There's a lazy river there. there's a beat anyway. we're not talking about disney's beach club resort. We're talking about disney's true beach resorts on the ocean. But if you go to alanine. You're in hawaii definitely rent a car because there are some amazing beaches around the island and we have three favorites. Yes when we were there and the one one is why of course the north shore's famous the banzai pipeline. Wia me a base of drive to that beach. Any of these things are an hour to ride real easy day trips to go to the beaches and then i call the surfing beach surfing. Beach is kylie loa beach. If that's how you pronounce it pronouncing these the lower something. It's just back on the way back towards honolulu about halfway. There may be and yet. It's it's a real true. Hawaiian bichon little campground part. If you wanna take surfing lessons there it's great. There's great lessons there. The waves are consistent. It's a true open. Beat quite amazing. Little kids surfing. Yeah amazing little kids. Maybe we'll post a picture of usurping on that beach as part of this social media for this episode so that that one's really close great spot to go surfing and then across on the other side of the island is kahlua which is a really cool little town right on the water and they have a really neat beach there too so chi loo beach the north shore and kellyanne lower beach. I think that's how you say it. I may be saying wrong but you'll find it. Those are three awesome beaches. Plus you do have a beach rate at your resort. A nice quiet beach like amelia said. The water's warm there. It's very calm tons of beach chairs. it's it's fairly large semi circle shape. Check it out on a google earth map and you'll see so that is out of ninety eleni hawaii and then another one we talked about. They will be disney's vero beach resort. And i don't know this might actually be my favorite beach if we're talking strictly about the beach hotel. I'd have to say personally. I prefer the air disney's vero beach resort beach than the alani beach lie because it is truly wide open to the ocean. You can't even serve there either. You can on windy days. We have seen people surfing there. You can definitely bougie board there quite a bit. But i'm going to get in just like we did with lonnie there's other beaches nearby but at vero beach resort the beach is you know you're just on the coast there on vero beach so it extends hundreds of miles but there's rarely it's rarely what i would call crowded. No sometimes in the mornings we go on beach walks and watch the sunrise and get bitten by no see'ums. We talked about that in our verbiage. Episode. this is what. I was alluding to earlier if you want to know. More about. The resort in the area listened to that episode a few back but the beach itself. We didn't really focus on and there is a beach house. there where you can rent watercraft sailboats. But you can bring your own boogie boards and you surf and you're within range of bringing a surfboard. It's your subject to the winds really. It's wind driven surf there. It's not nash. Natural surf break but the beach itself has filled with tons of shells and highlight to look for shark teeth. It's weather dependent so days. It's actually quite calm other days. It's very rough. So i liked that personally. I like those open

"You can just get a burger and fries outdoor patio dining or bring it back to your hotel. I'd say all that is about. It's about fifteen minutes either way by car and there's lots of stuff to see along the way it's it's pretty nice upscale town of vero beach now dining as we get towards the end of our episode. I think those are our favorite dining. We've talked about so definitely we stand behind any of those. In our opinion now there are lots of activities. You should check out if you want outside activities if you like the beach go to the sebastian inlet beach. Sebastian inlet state park. Yes so it's just north and again everything's ten or fifteen minutes. It is a state park. There's this small really inexpensive. I can't remember what eight ten fifteen dollars. Whatever it is to get into the car but this beach is rarely busy and if you'd like to surf that's where you serve. If you wanna really bougie board on reliable waves pretty much every day in the summer go to sebastian. Inlet state park. I'm telling you go there once or twice every tip every trip. That's a tip. It's a great spot to go. There's so much wildlife and nature around this area so us few of our other favorite things. If you wanna see the manatee florida you know of really awesome creatures to see now. We're going south again towards vero beach island beach park. Go there no cost. It's you just drive in. Parks are really nice. Yeah and this is sort of a like a boardwalk through the woods but the manatee come there and it's amazing to see these creatures in their natural environment really recommend it and then really really close by the resort. There's the wabasso island environmental learning center like going there again. Nature trails and all sorts of local wildlife. And there's so much to do around that we probably even haven't discovered this the end. There's malls to you if you really you know. There's lots of cool local shopping in vero beach. Great shoe sales if you want if you want an outlet mall and i really personally don't wanna go to this but occasionally we go there. There is a arab scholem awesome. It's more of a drive. They have they behalf in.

"You bottled for like eight minutes. All the way down to the ocean it was so we were really lucky. Wants so what they do. After the turtle sometimes the nest hatch right in the turtles go back into the water and so what they do is they come in the count. The eggs that were in there. 'cause they keep track of everything but they found an unhatched. She said something's moving and it actually literally hatched in front of and we made a video on it. I'll put a link in the show notes and we named that turtle. Are you in some other kids did. If you remember the name. Sorry shelley something. Shelly may no i. No she had a name shall we may is the anyway. It's our video. I can't remember that. But i can't actually. Yeah but we'll find out but that was the one time we saw live turtle little little baby and it took it a long time to get to the water night walk night vision goggles and that is really cool it to go. It's like it's so dark but let me to. I don't know if you've used night vision goggles before. Life changing so cool you see like the little turtles at night. They do so much. Oh not the little turtles. The moms laying their eggs. Thank you see. See little turtles inside the egg. You don't see you can't see inside the but here's what it is. I will remind you so have x ray vision just reminded me of a couple of good points along this conservation area points disney is very good and and somewhat strict about turtles will go to light so what happens when those babies in other parts of the coast they go. The lights tend to be on the highway or the other side so sometimes the turtles will go the wrong way get crushed cars to really sad so they have a very good policy and reminders. Closing have heavy duty curtains for a night closure curtains if you have a room facing the beach because they don't want any light so the beach is pitch-black black. They really don't want you on the beach at night for that reason because of the turtles unless you're doing like a tour for the most part people obey then the beach for the sake of the turtles but they do have the turtle walk. And that's what amelia's talking about and it was amazing. We got those marines like true high quality night vision goggles that you put on and the want night vision. They use red flashlights. Because of the turtles can't really see those and you go out and first of all you're sorta staying in a room and the community hall and they're someone on the beach and then they'll give you alerts activity. We have some activity in sector seven. And then they'll say okay. Let's go night vision. Goggles on you..

"There's a small fee for whatever it is to keep it and if you're a disney vacation club member the fees are lower if you're not there few dollars higher but not outrageously none of these things are super expensive. It's really a and then you get tied and really cool because you you pick your own colors and it turns out as a mickey design. Yeah the tide is cool. Then you mentioned the and birthday party. Unbirthday part i think is your favorite things and you might be i. I don't think i could do it. It's up to what age twelve or eleven or twelve. Something like that but yeah. It's a great thing for kids to do the birthday party. You get a schedule when you arrive of all the activities to do it. If it's actually your birthday you do have to you. So you go to the little counter there through sign up for these things and they don't usually fill out like it's not as bad as walt disney world for signing up. Yeah we usually go at nine in the morning. Just if it's something we really want to do and sign up. Everything's right there because it's a small hotel. Well it's large but it's not disneyworld march and then you also made. I don't know if you remember a little sword. When you were little pirate sword you get to lingo with rhinestones and stuff and you get to keep that. What else have you made wand by the end of the day but there's so many things so those are all the little paid community hall things and there's a ton more them but then there are also things. We mentioned mini golf. There's bouake rentals down the beach. There are jet ski. Rentals ocean kayak rentals. There are sailboat. Rentals and we love jet skiing so we have rentals bombed around on the jetskis. It's very smooth on the water I think i said bougie. Boards before surfing is is not rate there but there is surfing near- nearby which get in a minute but lots of beach rentals and this is where we talked about the pay it forward thing if you like bougie boards by one on the way down for twelve dollars or whatever they cost and then give it away when you leave the resort because if your kids or you like the osha and you're going to use that boogie board and then back at the pool. Yeah with their the slide races and all those things one of the coolest very coolest things of all about the vero beach beach itself haven't in morning happens. Well it happens overnight and we see it in the morning although we have seen it overnight yes and that is the turtle's there are i. Think three at least species of turtle trying to remember when we did the turtle walk. There's like a zoned off areas. You'll see on the beach during the day for or there's turtles like nesting and everything. So this is one of the top turtle nesting areas. There are green turtles. Leatherback turtles and and some others and part of the deal that disney got to acquire this land from the state of florida was that they would take care of the turtlenecks and considered you and they do so they have a whole conservation team. That goes out every morning at the crack of dawn and they know how to see where the turtles came up overnight where they laid their eggs. They marked them off at. You'll see their tracks if you do Early morning walks just tracks of little like definite place definitely go to the beach so a million i are. We're down that beach every day. When we're there we got up early for sunrise on the beach and it is the best we go. Shell hunting and all sorts of things. I like looking for shark teeth.

Well, because the world is full of crazy, stupid idiots, Dumb people doing dumb things repeatedly. Over and over again, oftentimes in the state of like Florida, because that's where we're beginning. Well, you know, he decided to pick up the nine the one and the one all three of them together and complained about seeing something that he did not want to see and Didn't really make much sense and police were very confused. Um, so hilarity ensued. Was the thing that he did not want to see in aliens, but close. Really? Yes. How did you know that? I don't know. I just assumed aliens, But are you serious? It's close was aliens. Oh, really? Yes. The 28 year old Florida Man was arrested early yesterday for misusing 901 after placing a bizarre 1:45 a.m. call to the police emergency line. Okay, But who are you supposed to call if you see aliens? Well. If you see aliens, you should probably call your doctor. Because aliens don't exist. And you've got a few screws loose. So if it's 1, 45 and you see little green men actually stop drinking and go to bed. However, Mr Flew rants, the Vero Beach resident that he was called. 911 said he was seeing little aliens. Little ones flying low to the ground, even added that he did not want to go to Independence Day on them. Or go Independence Day on them, which was an apparent movie reference. Tio movie Independent pendant. Stay right in the film. Of course, Invasion of aliens is repelled. But not before earthling suffer widespread death and destruction. Here. Because he wasn't actually sealing seeing aliens and was there for wasting the time of the nine. The one in the one was arrested. Did they check to see if there were aliens? Is that how they knew? No. In fact, they knew because they know there are no such things. I'll be really frustrating if you were seeing aliens and nobody believed. You know what I would do is I would just turn your phone on. Take some video to the Internet. Good idea. Yeah, okay. If you see little man Actually, before you posted to the Internet. I would show a friend because very likely what you've put. What you've recorded is not aliens. It's something else, and I would hate for you to be determined to fool by those around you. The Internet is pretty unforgiving. Have I ever told you the story about the time we were on an overnight flight? And I was very, very troubled at the fact that nobody else was freaking out about the green flashing light that was following us and like at the exact same distance The whole time. I mean, for literally an hour to an hour and a half. I kept checking out the window. It was still there, and I was like Why is nobody else noticing this and freaking out right now? You mean the light on the the light on the way? Yeah, I was going to say also an episode of the Twilight Zone. Colleen Yeah. With John Lythgoe. That's like one of the weirdest episodes. By the way, it's still bring gives me nightmares. Terra 10,000 ft. The original starring William Shatner. Not that You remember that all the Twilight Zone, the movie that movie Man, that movie is we year NW and scary. One might even say It's like the Twilight Zone. Yeah. That's my thought. I don't know. That's a good thankyou s O. He was arrested in the aliens just got to keep roaming free. Worthy in flying snowplows. No, my head in the head he bought. Take another Harley. Dorian Slams into Bahamas and Menaces Florida

"We begin with the breaking news. This hour hurricane dorian the massive deadly storm is now lashing the florida coast powerful winds whipping onshore conditions are getting worse with each passing hour and it is going to be hours upon hours and hours. This is from moments ago from melbourne beach. Florida mandatory evacuations are underway there. Let's show you the storm from the international space station a stunning picture three hundred miles wide right now winds up to one hundred and forty five miles an our the picture of the storms. I just tweeted by u._s. Astronaut onboard the space station so that is the i of dorian seen from space as that storm is essentially sleet stationary moving so slowly ravaging the bahamas which it has been doing us since it came ashore there as a category five storm thirty hours ago it it is the most powerful storm in known history to hit the bahamas decimating the islands. Thousands of homes and businesses are now gone. An entire island is without power tonight. It is way too early to have any sense of the death toll and to give you an idea of just how high the storm surge was what the united states could be looking. Eh you can see waves nearly reaching the second story of home. <hes> rescue crews are just starting the grim task of searching for signs of life among the piles of debris and it the scenes like this that has officials in florida pleading with people in evacuation zones. Were still there to get out of a team of reporters standing by from florida to the bahamas tonight. I want to begin with miguel marquez who is out front in vero beach florida gal. What are people eating the evacuation warnings yes and no there's most the people along. The coast here have evacuated along the way but this storm has been so slow. It's creeping so slowly towards us. We've had this same wind for most of the day to day that is south here at vero beach. We're on the barrier islands here. The sea has been quite rough about the same. We've gotten on some bands of wins but as you look north you can see it's sort of broken up is not quite as much wind and clouds on that end of it so you do. You have some people who are staying sort of coming here to watch see what's happening. Some people coming here to secure their homes before they get out. Most people say they they are. They are going to get out there waiting to see what's happening here. They're watching very closely. What's happening to the bahamas right now and they're all wondering when will make that right word. Turn will head north and if it doesn't if it wobbles toward shore people are concerned about that authorities saying look if you don't get out tonight by a two a._m. Tonight it will really start to come in <hes> in a very big strength here. If you don't get out before those winds hit forty five hours those those bridges to the mainland we'll be closed and you will have to ride it out here on the barrier islands aaron all right miguel marquez. Thank you very much. I wanna go as as miguel pointing. They're indicating getting down south. Just south of miguel stuart florida where brian todd is at this hour so <hes> brian <hes> you know as we understand it. You know it's sort of sitting there as it moves so slowly. What is happening conditions where you are conditions here. Erin are getting worse like they are. Mcgill is look at the storm surge here at this park in stuart stuart florida. The waves have been smacking up against the seawall here all day long. It has been getting worse and if you can see out here looks like a rain band another one of those outer rain bands is about to come in here. You're at seward. It's been like this all day. You'll get an really hasn't let up as far as the wind. The rain has come and gone with the wind has not let up and we are told that the wind is going to get much worse in the next say twelve hours or so here in stewart what also is a concern as you've got the confluence of three large bodies of water that have all been you know had the storm surge been bolstering them <hes> since i guess sunday <hes> where was in the bahamas that storm surge i has been affecting the atlantic ocean over here the indian river lagoon here and the saint louis river right over here. This is a confluence of those three bodies of water all of which have seen the storm surge really get stronger and that makes the flooding here the flooding danger here much worse in addition. We can tell you that right behind us. Here are barrier islands hutchinson island in jupiter island about thirty thousand. The people combined live on those islands. Some of them have gotten out there under mandatory evacuation orders but as you know even under mandatory evacuation they people cannot be forced from their homes. They are concerned though that the people who did not get off these islands are not going to be able to get help once the storm starts. They believe that they're not going to be able to get first responders to them. The bridges are going to be closed. Ridge is going to be too dangerous for first responders to pass over them and they're worried that people here in these barrier islands are going to get cut off for at least a couple of days erin all right brian todd. Thank you very much and let's get the latest now on doors path. Tom sater meteorologist is tracking the storm. So <hes> tom you know is <hes>. You know. You hear people saying well. Let's let's wait. Is it gonna wobble. Is it gonna turn. What is the forecast right now well. We're still hopeful that it's going to start to make that job to the north now and stay offshore but the the door is not closed on that yet the sun is setting and you can see it here in the visual imagery another harrowing night for those in the bahamas about seventy thousand of this northern islands three hundred hundred sixty thousand overall but they're without power communications probably without roofs we've heard of total decimation of homes and the inundation of heavy water and they're going to have a long night tonight it. It is stationary. It's not even moving one mile per hour now. We cover a lot of hurricanes and the c._n._n. Weather center typhoons and super typhoons of the pacific cyclones in the in the indian ocean. I've never seen one put on the brakes like this. Keep its power after traveling aaron. Seventeen hundred miles form barbados through is wobbling a little bit overnight last night. It went through what we call an eye wall replacement cycle. It can't sustain this energy so the eye wall opens up another band and then it contracts syndicates energy back but every time it does that those strong winds extend outward so the storm actually gets broader in its strength you you can see already some rain in the carolinas into florida. We've had some waterspouts. I wouldn't be surprised to see a tornado watch tonight or tomorrow for the eastern half of florida but but even when you get in freeport i mean this is only thirty two miles to the northeast of them. They have been getting a beating but they struck the strongest winds near the i. Maybe just away from them. I'm sure this has changed the coastline in the shape of it right now but what we're watching now of course the warnings have been extended north. Just south of jacksonville now watches her into the carolinas but coming up the second part of this show. I want to talk about the steering currents and what this means every ten fifteen twenty miles is critical. We we need to get that. Turn to the north and i think we may have something that's going to help us out and share it with you in just a little bit all right. Thank you very much. Tom is going to be back with us as we watch this and tom in a few minutes i wanna talk about four pierce one of the city's about to feel the impact a door and when you talk about these wide bands tom linda hudson you see her there the mayor of fort pierce here's joins me now. Live maher. I appreciate your time <hes> obviously the storm dangerously close to florida and so enormous that you have these impacts but so slow that you have some people saying well. I just wanna get a better sense of things. What is your biggest concern right now. Mayor i am concerned that people will not take it seriously we still even though it looks better for us. It's still going to be a serious effect on this area. The winds are going to be high and the storm surge is going to be high and we're concerned about flooding so and we're also wanting people to stay in their homes and not leave their homes until all the all clear so you know obviously you're going to have hurricane-force winds as you as you talk about the storm surge itself could be it could be incredibly deadly <hes>. Are you prepared right right now. Yes we are prepared and i will tell you that we've had lots of time to prepare. How many days have we had to prepare pair. So we feel really good about what we done and <hes> we're experienced at this and i know you can't prepare for every eventuality -ality but <hes> we have a great team that has had experience with matthew and experience with irma and we coordinate well within this county and and we've done the best we can with what we have and we're we're prepared so when darrow people you know who have not evacuated and we are you you know across florida where they're gonna be. Bridges are going to be closing down right. People are going to be stock and they could be stuck for days and if the storm <hes> you know you have a stationary storm like what's happening the bahamas it could be incredibly incredibly deadly <hes> for a loss of life. What is your message to people who have not yet heeded evacuation warnings so they shelter in place ace. They've made that choice and most of them should know the dangers. The dangerous are <hes> when the winds get above forty five miles per hour first responders cannot come and rescue them and so that message is always clear and <hes> we have seven hundred people in shelters right now who heated that message and in a vacuum but couldn't leave but a lot of people left a lot of people left friday saturday and sunday so <hes> the ones that are sheltering in place they know the risk a- and <hes> we're we're all in this together all right. Thank you very much more

They're mostly saturday afternoon or saturday evenings <hes> but i can all my gosh i can totally imagine getting married there air on the on the lawn somebody get married on the law and it was beautiful <hes> they have have receptions face right there and that's a big difference between the the hilton head island resort in vero beach is very beach does not have a table service restaurant. They don't have any type of conference space or anything of that nature where hilton head to our where vero beach does <hes> so that was really cool. We did the character breakfast on saturday morning <hes> and they have that in their their ballroom like their their conference center so that was really cool that was with a goofy and donald that was a lot of fun or more reasonable than what you're gonna find signed character breakfasts over walt disney world resort and the character interaction was really fantastic. Oh my god when i went goofy sat at our table and hung on us yup the coolest thing question goofy was doing night dances with the boys and they absolutely love that donald was playing rock paper scissors with the kids. That was so much fun you don't you just don't find that that type of of longer interaction over at walt disneyworld busy world but then the crowd vero beach was was lower so they were able to spend more time we donald came back to our table. Probably two or three times and goofy came back at least twice exc so so so much fun. It's such a relaxed atmosphere. <hes> even i'm the type who likes to go. Go go go go when i'm on vacation it it really kind of pushed me to sit back and relax and that was that was much needed. There's a full spa offered their and they have massage. They have have manicures pedicures whole nine yards. All of that stuff is available and then they also also have the disney discovery club which is for kids ages four to twelve <hes>. That's kind of like a night out. It runs about thirty dollars per child <hes> <hes> but also includes the price of dinner crafts <unk> titties all sorts of stuff like that. I think it was probably eh one of my favorite relaxing vacations that i've done. It's yeah it was amazing like it's crazy to me too because it's not not like you would think it you know right. It's place nothing eight. Yes two hours. It's about an hour forty minutes. Turn our south of cape canaveral so if you're sailing out on disney cruise line i could very easily see going over and spending a night or two at vero beach prior to a disney cruise or even following a disney cruise rather than going to walt disneyworld and then going on the cruise line i would we'll we'll highly recommend that to clients ed's when we checked in. They were offering.

"Good with quiet dignity and steadfast conviction. He accomplished a feat that would have a lasting impact on sports and society. He was born in Georgia schooled in Los Angeles. But emancipated in Brooklyn. Baseball became the true national pastime with Jack Roosevelt Robinson. I said foot on a major league field. It remains baseball's proudest and most powerful moment to one man freedom ride as he crossed the foul line in the so-called, noble experiment. He became a beacon of hope in our country in what was to become a monumental moment for baseball in civil rights. He could not fail. Thank god. He did not fail. His legacy has transcended baseball because what he did transcended baseball. He was a catalyst who altered the public who alerted the public to the whole notion of inclusion Jackie Robinson made us better. And for that. We are forever. Grateful on the centennial of her father's birth. His daughter again honors this audience this morning with her appearance. We are so honored to welcome back to the show. Sharon robinson. Thank you for being with me. Good morning. Beautiful introduction. Well, you deserve it. Then God knows your parents to how how is our favorite mom. Rachel now Ninety-six on her birth certificate. Incredible. As always. Quite a force. And and just so blessed every day to have her with my goodness. And you were recently in Los Angeles on the occasion of the on the occasion of baseball taking time out for everybody to wear number forty two. It was an extra special night. We had forty two Jackie Robinson scholars and we had our president of the foundation. They're demonstrating on and more importantly, we had mom and my brother in from Africa. So he couldn't have been more any more special than that. You were just with the dodgers. Of course, the home office. You were just in Florida working on your new book to be published in September. Tell us about that. Yeah. Author and this book is a memoir, I've called child of the dream a memoir of nineteen sixty three so special to me because it's a chance for me to talk to kids about turning their pain. You know, thinking about thinking as a teenager. But more importantly thinking about who I am and about race. So this is the first time I've actually written about it about race, or, you know, my own experience with and my family's experienced with the civil rights movement for children. So I'm very excited about this book, and it'll be out in September September yet, the scholastic publication, and we're getting a lot of buzz and fish. Doing the the audio book. And that's quite an experience at you know, three days in the studio reading your own material trying to edit as you're reading. You realize too late. Sharon, it's those words are now. Put that in there. But what an experience to grow up as a child of Jackie Robinson and have Martin Luther King in your home and the greatest jazz artists of the time in your home. That's not. Yeah. That's when you know Eddie ninety sixty three my dad, really set for our mission in our family legacy. He came back from Birmingham, Alabama, and we've been asking to go with marches and he came back. He's thoughtful about it. And he my mom talk talked about it. And he came back. And he said, you know, you know, hope you find work that you love, and, you know, remain committed to family in God. But we have we are going to have a family mission. And that an in from this point on. It's not just gonna be me out there raising money for the civil rights movement. We're going to do this as a family. So we had our first jazz concert on our lawn in nineteen in June of ninety sixty three. To raise money bail money for those who have been marching in Birmingham. And we hope Dr king with come to that. But he wasn't able to. And then we went as a family to the March on Washington where my dad actually help was one of the greeters with Dr king before the March began and then nine days later, we had a jazz concert at our home second jazz concert, and and Dr king came himself. So it was you know, actually handed him the money in my David, and I sold sodas and hot dogs, and, you know, organize our our friends, you know, to do that and and data and Ella. Fitzgerald was air and Dizzy Gillespie quite a concert was mazing day. We welcome your phone calls for Sharon Robinson. What a what a moment would honored his to have around the show at eight seven. Seven three three seven sixty six sixty six or so many in our audience who revere your father who may have been fortunate enough to actually see him raise hell on the base pats also one of your one of your other programs, which means so much to you is the breaking barriers program had never league baseball in. Its twist second year you've raised more than thirty nine million dollars. There may be seminar audience this morning, Sharon who aren't familiar with it? Please tell us about your work. Yeah. And in nineteen ninety seven it was a fiftieth anniversary. And at the time. I was in this midwife and author and I get drawn into baseball on different kind of way going going around throwing out first pitches in so I post them and and anyway, ended up with I been working with the Commissioner's office since that point and developed a program called breaking barriers in sports in life with scholastic and major league baseball, and the concept is teaching kids. That obstacles are barriers are part of life. And the we have to have strategies to deal with them. And we give them values that I saw the ads success on and off the field as those strategies, and then ultimately the kids tell their own story. So what we're doing right now is we're we're visiting some of the top winners in this essay confirmational essay contest that have written new who have written about barriers or obstacles they've had to overcome in their lives. And they in their essay, they connect themselves to the values and to Jackie Robinson. It's really been very powerful work. We will honor at the all star game in Cleveland. In july. We will honor a little girl a young lady from New York who is a Muslim girl who has was bullied because she wears a hijab, and we visited her and her school in queens, and she was sell it. It's a school where kids come from, you know, all over the world, and they are they just congratulated this girl 'cause she represented them. You know, kids immigrant children, and is it was such an emotional wonderful day for us, and then we also traveled to Tennessee, and we will honor a girl in from Tennessee who wrote about having eating having an eating eating disorder. But in in one paragraph, she describes going to communion and literally evaluating. How many calories are in the host? Yes, my goodness. You know, and it brought home how delicate this disorder is. And what a what a struggle it is. But this young woman is now in ninth grade, and she'll be honored at the World Series. So she really powerful author, and I mean writer he's got he's got to bring this out, and she's working on it as a book because she's got a lot of beautiful imagery. That's just brings just brings it home. What what she's been through? That's one eight family in a small town in Tennessee where everybody knows everybody. And so they came out from all corners to congratulate you on it's wonderful. Sharon Robertson's with us. We're taking your phone calls for her on the toll free eight seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six also one other development, which I thought was fantastic when dodger town. Opened in Vero beach in nineteen forty eight after your father's rookie season. The players the players shared living quarters, no matter, no matter the color of their skin. And then the dodgers opened a golf course on the premises in nineteen fifty four because the courses around Vero beach in in the state of Florida were segregated the club leaves to train in Arizona in two thousand and eight but thanks to the former owner of the dodgers, Peter O'Malley and major league baseball. They have announced the renaming that complex the Jackie Robinson training complex. That's perfect. We are so excited about that development at an mom and dad came down for the announcement. And you know, it's going to be an opportunity for kids who play baseball and softball boys and girls from all over the country will come to this facility. So it's not real also serve the local. Baseball you've baseball programs, but they but many of baseball's signature you programs will now have a home right there, really handing the RBI champion. They're going to hold the invitationals in youth leagues in boys and girls baseball and girls and girls softball, and I'm gonna say Ed because you know, it's an hour and a half drive from my house. Some like I'm all in. They'll take up residence. There will be involved. But let let's move the clock back. Imagine being a kid on the same fields that Jackie Robinson. Yeah. Absolutely. I it's, you know, it's I remember when I first started working with baseball and my first trip to euro beach. You know, now, I'm no longer a kid visiting Vero beach or even bringing my son back when he was three years old for or a dodger doddery vent, but now to come back as an employee baseball and to go down the hallway and say, oh my God. Is he photos of data and peewee? And you know, all the all the guys Joe Joe black, you know, visited there, you know. So it's so meaningful, and they named the name the streets after those guys they did that was so fun. What what's your earliest recognition? Can you? Remember, what age you were? When you first begin to realize that this was no ordinary father. Yeah. You know, you you had a sense of it. You know, we had a very, you know, a good private life family life. My parents were always good about that. So whenever we would step out in public. And you have a sense of how important your dad was. But you thought I thought it was just a baseball player. I didn't understand the backstory. I didn't know about their, you know, the years before I was born, you know, I didn't know about the racist based or I didn't really understood understand even wanna color barrier was so it wasn't until I was like eight or nine years old and a day camp. And we saw the Jackie Robinson story. And my dad it was made in nineteen fifty. And the only thing I knew about that movie. Was that I you know, was after I was born and dad went back out to LA to film, and and mom, and I came when I was a month old we traveled to the I'm traveled to LA and went to the set. So I grew up hearing ruby Dee say, yes, I held you in my arms when you were a month old, and we were filming filming the movie, but anyways, soon out of see it at eight or nine and for the first time, I'm beginning to sense that those early years were painful, I didn't for my dad, and my mom, and I didn't know how to. Process it. So that was the beginning of my awareness. But I it took years to really understand it in your mom, of course, was under the same constraints as your father. Well, mom. Yes. Mom, was it was different. You know? 'cause she in in in you could magin you're you're watching your husband out there. In and you have to you dealing with what's going on in the fans around you. But also you're watching him out there. So I think that their experiences where you make each one of them, and h and very powerful, you know, my father was on the field and experiencing and have having to perform my mother's in the stand watching it hearing it around her, you know, and praying that he's able to perform as well as it. You know, he, you know, trying to give him the additional strength. So that he can make it through those early years. They were it allowed them to form a partnership in a bond that lasted a lifetime. And you know, I don't my mother. He they don't see it as you know, they want to be seen it ain't kind of ways as martyrs. But really as tides. Can happen when you work together. Right. But Brooklyn was the perfect place. Sharon for this incredible American story to unfold. I think so I think you're right edge. You know, in all over people from Brooklyn, you know, they have such powerful stories to tell us that it, you you get the sense of how much it was Brooklyn's identity and how proud they were that they were the ones, you know, giving with given entrusted with this major change in America. And how many dodger fancy created around the country through the travels of of his of his of his life is a baseball player. Yeah. It's so true. I you know, I I can't go. We we can't go anywhere. You know, there are still people left at remember seeing him play and all they passed on the best to their children. And it's. It's really quite a following. I took a speaking earlier about Tim Anderson of the Chicago White Sox who in a recent illustrated story made a comment comparing himself to Jackie Robinson. And I thought to myself how dare you even bring up that man's name. Well, I know I know that he means..
