"Welcome to on the verge. I am care bradley bringing you this first of hopefully many frisky. Fridays frisky fridays. What are these about. These warning messages are all going to have somewhat of a theme these days today on frisky friday. I really feel called to bring you in when you into my life. I have to tell you my friend that today and every day going forward from here. I am committed to changing my game to changing how i live. It doesn't mean that. What i've been doing has been bad or you know not not doing things. Well but the way. I'm stepping forward into this day. Especially with you especially on this. Podcast is to really shed the roles that i've carried in my life and to offer you me as raw and as real as i'm able to communicate why. Why am i doing this. why today. well my husband. Brian and i are officially house. Louis we decided about a year ago that we while it was actually happening more than a year ago but we have been moving toward this moment where we have no mortgage. We have no rent. We are truly without house and without location so we are what is known out there as location independent uae. The heck would we be doing this. Well we are on a quest a personal quest to understand what is most essential in life in our lives to really tune into what our hearts are longing for to. Really make sense of why we're here and so being location. Independent is just one part of this project. But it's big. It's a big project when you let go of stuff and you start to let go of your tether to places. It is so uncomfortable but it's also in that discomfort in the shakiness that we find ourselves. You don't have to do this. You don't but you can join me and learn what i am learning and experiencing so being location independent. It started A few years ago. When i was really interested in selling my business. Verge yoga verge. Yoga has been around for sixteen years now and it's the type of business that is very local it never sleeps and it's open all year except for one day and so it really third me to the philadelphia area. I needed to be there. We needed to be there. So selling the business at the end of two thousand and nineteen allowed me to release that role of business owner and of yoga teacher and over the over. The course of twenty twenty. I mean we've all changed so much. But i continued to shed roles. I continued to let go of my identity and my Kind of my my fixed around being thought of as something like speaker or flow expert. Or whatever even podcast. I mean i've let go of that as well and there's a huge plane. That's coming over me i. I'm coming to you from burlington vermont. We are on a like a ten day tour here of northern new england Today we're headed out to a ferry to cross lake champlain and to visit like placid a place. I've never been we've never been so we're just you know discovering discovering our country in the same time discovering ourselves. So why does this matter to you. Well i have to be honest that i am in process as best to my ability of putting down my teacher hat of putting down that role of teaching and coaching. And it's not easy because it's been a role that i have you know been wearing for most of my life and it's not to say i'm never gonna teach or coach or speak again but i'm really wanting to discover my authentic voice not my teacher voice not my coaching voice or my speaking voice. Because they're different. But my true voice. Because i feel like when i can offer the world my real deal cara voice. Well then i'll learn a lot more about myself and and hopefully it will resonate. It's not going to resonate with everybody. I know that so. What i'm doing is letting go practicing letting go in. This is how. I'm changing my game. And how i've moved in the world fifty six years fifty six years. So i'm offering this to you and asking you to call me out when i get on my soapbox when i start teaching again because i'm sure i will because it's a bitch will pattern. We all have patterns. We all have patterns and belief systems. And it's just what we do over and over again and sometimes most often these patterns become are blind spots. I have many blind spots and so my practice is in shedding as much as i can so that those blind spots become apparent to me and the ones that are unhelpful. I can work to change direction to leap to let go so changing the game for me. One is being location independent. Which kind of puts you into the state of emergence. You know not really having solid plans. We've got a couple of plans but most of it is really just space to kind of.

You know at least in studio and so many businesses again again. It's like another smack against the side of the head you know. It's extraordinary what we are asked to be. You know we are being asked to go through right now you know in in our personal lives in in our country in our world so simple reminder today stay awake. Don't get caught up in trauma. Don't get caught up in new cycles. Yes you wanna stay aware of what's happening but be careful to not give your power over this week and next week and the week after we head into twenty twenty one. We want to be as alert as clear and calm as tuned into ourselves and to our immediate family as ever before. So you know i can't. I can't pretend. I can't. I can't be off topic anymore. "All right the rampage continues. Good morning this has been one heck of a week for me anyway and hopefully not. Hopefully i don't know something is is quivering in you. It's time my friend. It's time to step out step out and just name what's been agitating us. What what we're disappointed about why we're holding back at today. What's pissing us off. It's okay to name what's pissing you off. Name it to yourself name a to your partner. Name it to your best friend. Name it to the to out into the night sky. I am pissed off because this year has created so much fill in the blank for every single one of us so much so today i just want to offer you the call to action name. What you're pissed off about. I'm pissed off about so many things first of all. I'm pissed off about myself. Which is why. I'm having this week. Where i've been up very very early pressing record. I'm having this week. I'm pissed off. Because i've been holding back and playing small for way too long. I'm pissing are. I'm pissed off because i mute my voice. I hold it back. I hold it down. I i called craft it. I'm pissed off because the business. That i have built that i built for. Sixteen years verge. Yoga is holding on by a thread. We're gonna make it right. I sold the business last december. But i'm still very much involved in very much invested financially in the business and we're holding on we're going to make it by god we're gonna make it but it has been such a tough road and my heart breaks for small business out there for all of us. Small business owners and entrepreneurs have put our blood sweat and tears into war into our masterpieces only to see them crushed in a matter of months pissed off.

"Hey, hey, hey, good morning to you. I have a an exciting week in store for us. Well, at least for me, I hope it is for you and that is regarding the tag line for virtual data that has been in the center of my heart for Seventeen years now unblock and fold unleash am going to get to that in a moment. But first i'm just telling you that I am not moved in to my six month rental yet. My husband and I are still sort of unbounded untethered we move in tomorrow actually and have been floating around northern Maine for the last week with us being that we are still in the middle of this covid-19 as people like to call it now. We wanted to stay away from the crowd and safe and Ed. As we moved around stay away from human beings as much as we could so we are landing tomorrow in our 6-month rental and I look forward to be having at least some of my stuff in one place. It has been it has been quite a ride, but the ride continues. So without further Ado, let me get to them what we are going to be talking about this week the tag line for Verge. Yoga came about in 2004 before I even opened good friend of mine. Johnny. Gillespie asked me well what your tagline Cara and I'm like, what do you mean tagline? I need a tagline. You said? Yeah, you need a tagline like oh crap. So I allowed the question as I often encourage you to do play with questions drop questions into your Consciousness because guess what you're extraordinarily intelligent and you will come up with them. Answer somehow someway you can just trust it. So I remember laying down and taking a short nap one day and after I had been mulling around what time the tag line forever giaga, and I opened my eyes from the nap and I set out loud unblock unfold and Leash what the heck and I started playing with it and I thought okay, you know what we'll start with this and we'll see how it evolves over time. Well, it has stuck at least for me and I'm going to explain to you off the course of this week what the meaning of Unblock unfold unleash means to me and has meant to thousands of students at virgi Olga. Unblock will just start with that today. It really is the basis of mental Fitness. And you know, I've been talking about mental Fitness and I am all mental Fitness. Now my fridge and mental Fitness is is really the three domains of body brain and biome and how to get to the root causes the root of our imbalances the root of our struggles the root of our aliveness and intelligence and I don't want to play up at the surface. There's enough surface-level self-help out there. What I hope to bring you everyday in 6 minutes or less is route route remedies route practices route protocol protocols. So unblock is this outer level of breaking patterns, which we spent a whole week on a few weeks ago go back and listen. And I and and those patterns are physical mental and emotional. We can unblock patterns through practice through inquiry through looking at through being curious about and I think that the easiest patterns to unblock are generally the physical ones if you think about a yoga practice, we are unblocking tension. We are unblocking tightness. We are discovering where we are where we are stuck physically my hips my hip flexor my back my neck. I'm talking personally here. So unblock is really about identifying and then starting to chip away at obstacles that hold our energy back. In in the in the root definition of yoga. It is about on releasing obstacles that impede Richie or Pro NE Chi energy from flowing through our lives. And so this unblocking is this first level and I gotta tell you we're never really finished with unblocking. I mean, we will always Circle back cuz we will always buy new levels of mental physical emotional tightness and tension that's ready to be released. So my question for you today is is what can you start unblocking? What is ready to start releasing or dissolving? What patterns would start with the physical? Look at your yoga practice. Look at your your your workouts. Where am I stuck? Where am I weak? And then we move into mental and emotional through our brain practices through the meditation practices the inquiry the Stillness the silence the Solitude off for today. We're going to just play with those those layers peeling away the layers where we are stuck where we are tight and tense home and that is how we start to unblock the energy that brilliant Prana G life force energy. Just so waiting to run through you and me through me.

"Good morning my friend I hope you are having a fantastic so far. I want to talk to you about strong calm clear. Strong, calm. Clear. Three little words that have. Informed my teaching for the last few years I want to tell you where they originated from and what they mean for me and how you too can carry them in your pocket every day and maybe inform how you move through the world. Few. Years ago we did a survey advert Yoga Verge Yoga is was the business. I found it sixteen years ago just sold it in December and we did a survey of hundreds and hundreds of students we wanted to know how do you feel when you leave class? What are some of the? Or the top thing that you feel when you leave our yoga classes are yoga studio and we had about fifteen top adjectives that came across after the survey it was fantastic the top three. Were strong calm clear. After, Practicing Yoga at verge people felt strong calm clear. and. I have been sitting with those words for ever since because to me they really. Describe. Our sense of feeling mentally well or mentally fit And as a mental strength coach, this is what I train. I train people to build mental fitness. So I WANNA break them down for you both in body, but also in mind mind and body. What is strong mean Obviously. It is feeling strong strength having strength having. Physical Strength. But also having mental strength. And in my experience, what mental strength is, is the capacity to know where you are. The capacity to be able to pinpoint where you are mentally. So so often we get so caught in our busy mind we get caught in the cacophony of thinking tasks doing information. That we can't even find ourselves in space. So being mentally strong is to be able to ground yourself in the moment here. I am. And so to start to develop that I asked the question where am I right now? Where am I? And here's the thing. You don't have to find yourself asking yourself the question where am I brings you back into the present moment It's mindfulness practice and you can do it all day long. You can do it in the middle of a meeting where am I? Where am I? This is how we build mental strength the capacity to pay attention on purpose moment to moment, which is the definition of being mindful. Mental strength. All right. So when we feel strong, we feel mentally present. We are physically capable strong grounded. And emotionally strong as well being able to not get pulled away by the emotional roller coasters of life. Okay clear now, come on going to calm I strong calm. Come. Now, many of us think of the Yogi. With their in the mood drive with Yoga Mudra. The forefinger thumb together in Lotus position. Right but calm is such an elegant word. Feeling calm is that sense of being fluid of being inflow of being flexible enough to be able to adapt to life as life comes at you? As John Cabot sin says he is the founder of modern day meditation or mindfulness. He said you can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf. And in order to surf, you need to become your body and mind need to be. Flexible adaptable and Agile and. That's what feeling calm is. It's not being chill. It is being. It is being that steady ebb and flow of life being in that that just that water like feeling. Of how life emerges and moves through us. Strong. Calm. Clear. Clear. Is the sparkling. Bright Light. High definition way of living in life. It's seeing things as they are. It is it's it's being able to. Discern. What needs to be done in any moment? It sensing into your your body and listening to the language of your body. Emerging. Your body's speaks to you constantly through language of sensation. And when we are clear, we hear that we feel it. We sense into it we sense the impulse. The intuition of what to do next. So crystal clarity mental clarity. And physical clarity. Or sensory clarity. Okay. There's a lot there. I'd like you to just hold these words with you today. Strong. Calm clear. And then just ask yourself throughout the day where am I where am I? Where am I? This is how he began my friend. This is how we begin to build that mental fitness that emotional stability. And the physical vitality. That encompasses including the gut health. We need that gut health in there I go all get to but we need that gut health as well to to fill out. The entire holistic, well being that we also desire. That's aw- I'm over time. Hey, check out the details because I'm always Stephan links in there and Yes. Reach out to me reach out to me reach out to me I love engaging with you be well..

You may know this already have maybe if you've been following me or read my book on the verge or maybe come to my yoga, Studio Verge Yoga, you may know the story but. I think it's an important one to. To remind you of. And remind me of and that is that the verge averge is a boundary. It's an edge. And it's on the edge. That we change and grow. Being out there on the verge now unfortunately. The expression on the vert. has is used so often in the negative on the verge of a nervous breakdown if you remember that movie. So years ago many many years. My husband went down to the Ecuador to the Amazon and he spent a few weeks with an indigenous tribe. And he? When it came back he told me the story how they would be. Going down these tributaries in. in a canoe CA dugout tree bark right tree trunk. And they would stop. At certain places along the way and they've been pause there. And maybe have a snack or water, but it was at these places where the indigenous. People that he was with would pause to almost pray. And these places these edges of land where to trip tributaries came together is called a verge. and. It's they are on the verge. Research shows animal life and wildlife? Thrive. And so I. named. My Yoga Center in two thousand and four Verge Yoga. For that reason to create a space where people can flourish and thrive. Just. Like that place there on the Amazon. I don't know what's coming out of my mouth I have an idea direction and then then I just write it. Because I trust that right there on the edge. is where I'm going. I may fumble, but it's where growth is happening. So where are the verges in your life? Where do you live on the verge? How do you live on the verge? We can do it mentally. A mental practice, we can do it emotionally immolation ship. Right. Our relationships can be verges where we are called to step up to open up to accept to allow. Or to challenge and physically, of course, we can challenge ourselves physically right there on the verge. Not, blasting ourselves out of the water but just enough so that we start to feel the tremble we start to feel that aliveness and it's they're on the verge my friend where we feel most alive. And this is what I based my whole book on its honestly what I've based my whole professional life on and it's where I live personally I wanna live on the verge and I wanna live on the verge with others. It's it's really part of the makeup of my my new mental wellness business. Where we partners? Are Living Together. In In the space where we are growing tremendously. Where we are thriving and listen if you WANNA work with me. Just reach out that's all you have to do. DM or email and Let's talk about how we live on the verge together. If you have your own verges, let me know I wanNA hear. Where you live on the Verge And let's do that because this is where we come alive when I come alive, you come alive. "The fear that you have the anxiety that you have the worry the the hesitation that you have because you care so much other people think and how your words may land for them so for many many years I have been holding back the inner stress I've been carrying an I spoke about this last week. The worry the fear the hesitation that I've had in just saying it right so I had a couple of friends. Ask Me after last week and after the Post that I've been putting out a out my own stress. I had some friends some very good friends and I thank them for it. Say Hey Kara truthfully is this just a way. Is your sharing your stress. The adrenal fatigue the exhaustion the brain fog. All the stuff you've been talking about. Is this just a way to get people on your podcast or to get people on this Webinar or to sell the mental wellness company? That they're working with now and I said absolutely not. It's come to a surprise to a lot of people that I've been suffering in silence in with the stress and that's a good indication that I have not been sharing and so I'm here to say to you all to ask you all. Where do you holding back? What are you shoving down? Where are you suffering in silence? So for me the big the the Pandora's box that's opened and I wrote about this in my email yesterday when I when I saw my business verge yoga which happened just weeks ago publicly. I felt this huge exhale like oh I don't have to pretend anymore because for fifteen years I've been feeling like I have this yoga center right. I am the leader of a Yoga Center Meditation Center. How can I come out and say I have adrenal fatigue? I'm burnt out. I am suffering in silence with this incredible Self what's the word it's just It's not self esteem but lack of confidence or this inability to just say what I mean and me what I say because of the business that I have right so think about it if you are a Let's say you're a dentist. You can't really say that your teeth or rotting right or that you you know your teeth falling out because you haven't taken care of your teeth right so think about it here. I am this yoga meditation teacher. I teach flow state optimal state. How am I gonNA possibly say that? I'm dealing with Deeply rooted stress or suffering in silence or feeling separated so selling the business gave me this opportunity to finally be able to just say it that as a leader. I've been stressed and I think that there are a lot of people like me and you may be one of them that you are leading a family. You're leading an organization nonprofit your teacher. Whatever it doesn't matter we're all leaders in some way or another and we have to put on face. Might we have to. We have to act the part and it wasn't acting in a way where I was feeling like an impostor I just was choosing not to share that aspect of my life. So I'm here this this series and going forward to just share to walk next to you to share with you to hear your story so that we can all just stop it. We could all just stop it because the way that we are going to start to turn the wheel of suffering in our world is for us to all just step up and not worry about having the perfect picture on social media and not worrying about always having the The right thing to say. Or or knowing the research or having the The perfect balanced diet picture to take a picture of and show your friends. You can we. Just get real. And that's what I'm hoping to do. So this series how to be mentally fit in a fast moving world right. That's a lot really what I should have just called it is. Let's just all talk about our burnout. Let's talk about the stress that we've been under and then talk about how the strategies the psychological the physiological strategies that help us to navigate this world so i WanNa talk about with you all today so I'm going to ask some brave souls to step up as we get into this last week. I asked a couple of good friends this week. I didn't ask anybody so So it's up to you. There's no planted. I'm going to be honest right. This is all about being honest last year. I last week I planted some people. Didn't tell them what to say or ask them what to ask. I said will you be willing to go live and they did and I love them for that but I don't have anybody this week so it may just be you. That's GonNa on Mute and if you want to step up and say anything then just put that in the chapter and and Brian Somewhere on the other end. Will Un mute you so before we get to all the unwitting? I have to say that this week. I wanted to talk about psychological vigor and the gut brain access and we are GonNa talk about definitely psychological vigor but the gut brain access. I was going to go in depth with with Dr Shawn. Talbot who is a a brilliant Neutra or neutra psychologists right he does NEUTRA PHARMACEUTICALS. He is a brilliant mind in formulating products. That help us heal our body to then improve our mental cognitive functioning. Well I just found out about three minutes before we went live. That Sean is not available today. My God like okay here. We go just one of those stress resiliency tests and you know what it's okay. He's going to join US next week. He's going to be on fire next week with us. So it's all it's all GonNa work out as it should be but again here. I am not fooling anybody not fooling myself. So what I WANNA talk to you about to start is idea of psychological vigor. Last week we talked a lot about chronic stress. And I want to hear your questions so if you put your your questions in there as I go along I might have to put on my little reading glasses. 'cause I am fifty five and I cannot see very close anymore so there it is but what I wanna talk about psychological vigor. Is this term that I've heard Sean talk about and psychological? Vigor is psychology term that is really it embodies or encapsulates wellbeing from our physical mental and emotional standpoint. And I've really. I've really grasped onto this to this term because I love what it what it states and psychological vigor is a combination of physical energy emotional stability and mental acuity. I had to sit with the mental acuity. I'm like what does that really mean and the way I would define mental acuity is mental flexibility right so growth mindset and mental clarity the ability to see and know what's happening right here and now so not being behind that veil of brain fog to be right in the moment right here right now in what you are What you are consciously experiencing mental acuity emotional stability and physical energy what Sean. Dr Shawn Talbot defines as Psychological Vigour. He says it is the opposite of burn out. What is burnout? Burnout is the adrenal fatigue number. Two that I was diagnosed with last January. The kind of started this whole thing. Adrenal fatigue to we can also talk about burn out as being just. The effects of stress chronic everyday stress. That's an as opposed to acute stress. Right Acute stresses when something immediate happens to us that that that stimulates our body or or activate our stress response to respond in the moment like when the car when the car cut you off on the Highway. That acute stress psychological chronic stress. Is that Kinda slow? Burn stress so the Just a couple of another adjectives that I'm going to talk about my personal chronic stress and then I'd like to hear from you all my burn out. What it felt like for me was exhaustion. A feeling of being separate or lonely weight gain cravings like asleep or interrupted sleep and My say mild depression and anxiety over how I was putting myself out there in the world. So let's let's get some polls from you guys. What is what is burn out. Feel for you feel like for you. How is it emerged for you? And then how And then we're GonNa talk about some of the psychological and physiological strategies that are getting us into psychological vigor or the opposite of burnt out so go ahead and throw some of the stuff in the chat bar and let's see what we have If you want to on mute and and give us a one minute synopsis of burnout and Psychological Vigor. How you've experienced that go ahead and just let us now so if you want to jump on go ahead and yourself colleen said that It is she feels more reactive and more responsive or edgy. God that word at she like. Who doesn't feel edgy when you feel burnt out like the edges of your nerves are frayed. And there's just you're just Kinda live on. Fumes is how I felt in the past. Psychological stress feeling disconnected or training madness part of burnout a jewel asked. I think madness to depends on how you define madness. I think I think madness is just kind of over everything where you're not even sure how people are reacting to you a lack of confidence. That's something I've absolutely experienced as well. Lauren said a heaviness and not wanting to get out of bed Turning to food and alcohol to stress. Yes to distress so So that's a really great point. Lauren and I want to talk about stress for a moment here in the two capacities of stress. Because I think that when we talk about stress often we we think. Of all stresses bad. There's a fantastic book out called the upside of stress by Kelly mcgonagall. She's a researcher at Stanford. I read it a few years ago. I highly recommend it and what Kelly mcgonigal's says and reminds us. Is that not all stress bad stress? In fact we want to be challenged in life in relationship physically mentally emotionally. We WanNA press up against boundaries. And that's how we adapt and grow but the problem for me is. I have understood that. So I'm a push push pusher. Let's grow let's grow every day a little more little more little more and then I didn't realize that in the over pushing I was actually exhausting myself. I wasn't allowing for recovery. So the two aspects of stress. Are you stress e you stress and distress like Lauren just mentioned or distress you stress and distress or distress. You can say you. Stress are use stress. Are things that we do that. Offer us a really good challenge. So you go to your workout class and your teacher is pressing you and prodding you to push just a little bit more to go just into that state of burn right and your mind and your body's like I don't know if I can do it but I'm going to stick with it or you're working on a proposal or a presentation just like this right on Mike. Can I really just not hesitate today? Well it feels a little uncomfortable but know it's a challenge and I know it's going to help me to grow. That's that's you stress. That's good and in fact the flow research shows that when we push ourselves for percent more four to six percent is like a good use stress range if we push ourselves too much we we we lose. We get frustrated. We can't do it but and if we don't do enough then we may get bored. So you stress start to think about your life in these two ways you stress and distress the disc distress is when we are burning the candle at both ends. I've been doing that for a long time. Overworking overtraining over nurturing over. Whatever it is you're doing. What some of the ways that you have been.

"If you review it other people find it more easily. And that's that's the hope. Nope the hope that what I contemplate every day in my own life in my journal can help other people. And that's why I sit in my closet visit couple times a week bringing to you. Whatever is bubbling up for me without being said? I've got a sort of fun topic for you today in this many message. And that is this phrase that I heard almost every day when I brought my kids to middle the school. My kids are way past middle school. They're in their mid twenties now. They went to valley forge middle school in Wayne Pennsylvania. Sweet little school in a great school district and when I drove them and I didn't drive them every day that I I put my foot down on that one but if I had to drive the early there was crossing guard that off stood in the middle of the road right out in front of the Middle School. She was a woman probably in her fifties or sixties and she would stand there with her hand up screaming screaming. Slow down fifteen fifty miles per hour in the school pulls own at that time of the day. Slow down fifteen you know you have people flying lying especially people without kids that are going to work not recognizing how many people are trying to get in and out of the school or kids kids crossing if they were lucky enough to be able to walk to school and she was there reminding us all slowdown fifteen and now. I don't know what is this. At least I guess about ten years later. I still remind myself of that phrase all the time when I find myself rushing racing not only in the car but just in how I walk how I talk how I move about my day. Slowdown fifteen what a great reminder. Now here's the sad news about about. This story is that she was fired. I think people complained about her. which really sucks you know? Because here's this this woman. She wasn't militias. She was being honest. Slow Down Fifteen folks around the school and you got people kids crossing using it sucks when somebody can be that direct in that honest from a loving place to be fired but anyway just had added added that in but I remember her so her legacy lives on. She's taught me this simple reminder to slow down my chiropractor slash everything acupuncturist Dr By killing Brian. He's a master. Stir of many many different therapies. And I see him once at least once a week if I can and he tells me all the time because he sees me walking through the halls of verge yoga he psych slowdown. You Walk Really Fast.
