"That we had at Keeneland this past week was the fact that so many riders, and there was a survey that was sent out to riders across the country. It received very good participation. One of the biggest things that riders expressed in that survey was the fact that they don't know who to talk to and they don't necessarily want to bring this up to anybody if they're struggling with something internally because they feel it can show a sign of weakness or cost them a mount or maybe multiple mounts and it could hurt their business. Some of these riders, many of them, I'd say the majority, are not the John Velazquez's of the world. They're not the Javier Castellanos. They're trying to break in and they're trying to make a living and they're living day to day, just trying to fight to get to that level. It's tough because they don't want to come forward. They don't want to go speak to anybody and trusting somebody to talk with is very difficult, Johnny. Absolutely. It's a very difficult thing even to face it though. Listen, I go even through our own families. Everybody has, somebody in the family has trouble to go through with the patients and everything and I know personal families that we have problems with and they don't come out with it and they don't seek for the help and it's really hard to help people that are going through that situation and they don't seek for the help. You try to help them and they really put a wall in between that. It's really hard to explain it or why they don't want the help. All those things happen. Imagine at least the people who want to be helped. The help will be there. It's a really tough situation when you are trying to help somebody and they put a wall through it and not receive the help. I just hope that it might open it up the way we're doing right now. This wall comes down and they seek the help that they need. Very well said. That was the point of that conference at Keeneland the other day. It was to get the ball rolling on this. The conversation was positive. There were people there representing all facets of the industry and it was extremely positive. Everybody was rowing in the same direction and going for the same common goal of helping the human beings in our sport. It's not just about the jockeys. That was what the panel was focused on, but trainers, assistant trainers, exercise riders, starting gait crew members, everybody who participates in the game and really every facet of life. Everybody is dealing with something. The point is that eventually it would be wonderful to see a program in place in thoroughbred racing where people that are struggling with issues can go talk to somebody anonymously and get the treatment and the help that they need even if it's just to talk to somebody, Johnny. Absolutely. It's very important. Anybody who needs some help and needs to talk to somebody to release their... I believe that whatever it is, it's holding them back. I think anybody needs a little bit of talk and a little bit of push to go through life. I think it's important, definitely. Yep. Very well said. Hall of Famer John Velasquez here on the Horse Racing Radio Network. Johnny, it's a subject that I'm going to continue to talk about in the weeks and the months ahead. We're going to keep it out there, and there will be more discussions about this not just on this show, but in other formats and platforms as well, and I think it's ultra important, and I really appreciate you spending a few minutes to talk about that side of things today, too. Absolutely. Thank you for having me, and thank you for bringing the awareness. I think it's important that we're talking about it. Yeah. Very much so. Johnny, all the best. Safe trip every time you get a leg up, and congrats again on that big win in the Preakness. Let's go win the Belmont. Thank you. Thank you. Appreciate that. Thank you. All right. John Velasquez here on HRRN. Again, the Preakness now added to that incredible resume, and he'll continue to build on his legacy, maybe add a Caribbean Classic to the list. Somebody has to give him out in the Caribbean Classic, right? It's Johnny V. My goodness. All right. When I come back, we'll continue to talk more about racing, some great topics still to come, and a great edition of Unsung Heroes in the second hour of the program, Memorial Day Edition. It's one I think you're really going to enjoy. Up next, though, it is time for this week's Legends of the Turf.

"That, you know, the pace was very sensible, and that didn't come from behind, and he's actually run really, really well, too. It's just, he's been spotty in some races, though. So I think if the pace gets to be very fast, he could speed off with a horse or two and come running, I think. So, you know, I think he just needs to put it together. That's it. The other cool moment came after the race when Javier Castellano, your good friend, who was aboard the favorite, the derby winner, Mage, ended up finishing third, but came over as you were coming back to congratulate you. And I thought that was really cool, and I know you were really happy for Javier that he finally broke through in his 16th try and got his derby win. Tell me about that moment and that relationship. And it's so cool, because obviously we were talking right before the derby about he has not won the derby, you know, and we were just leaving the jacket, and I said to Javier, no way, that's coming. I just didn't know that was coming 20 minutes later. I was like, that's coming, Javier, don't worry, you're going to get yours. Obviously he got it, obviously we were very happy for him. And he felt the same way, you know, when I won the Preakness, I have not won it. One of the things that we always, you know, we try for these big races and all the things that we always dream about. And obviously for both of us, he gets his first Kentucky derby, and I get my first Preakness. So what a gift, really, what a blessing. Now that the Preakness is on your resume, is there anything else missing from the Johnny V. wish list that you want to accomplish in this sport? Not much, really. I mean, there's many races that I have not won, but nothing that I've always had a goal to win or anything like that. So I've been very blessed that most of the important races... Well, I'll take it back. Well, there's one race that I never won, and now that I've written much on it, but it's the Caribbean Classic. It's a race that we, as a Puerto Rican and Caribbean, know so they have the race. So that's probably one race that I would have loved to win it, but I didn't have a chance to do it yet. But yeah, that's probably the only one that I could say, yeah. Somebody needs to get Johnny V. Amount in the Caribbean Classic. He has to add that one to his resume now. Yeah, yeah, that's the only one that I could... But I think the major players, the major races, when anybody's a jockey, we're a trainer, an owner, that dreamed about winning British Cups and Kentucky Derby, Belmont, Preakness. So I think the major, major races that you win and then many other great ones that I've been very fortunate to win, so very blessed. So yeah, I think I'm pretty satisfied with how far I've come in my career so far. You know, I've seen you on social media. You've posted a couple of things that you've done since the Preakness stakes, other appearances that you've made. Javier got to throw out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium. What's the coolest thing you've done since winning the Preakness? I just done a lot of interviews, basically, though. So I didn't get to throw the pitch out at Yankee Stadium. But yeah, just a lot of interviews and TV things. So that's pretty cool, though. Anytime a big race like that, you get a lot of calls and a lot of interviews and talk about it. So it's very nice, and it's good for the sport as well, but I'm glad that I'm part of it. Hall of Famer John Velasquez joining me here on the Horse Racing Radio Network, fresh off of that big win in the Preakness stakes. And again, that box is now checked on his resume, and he adds that one to an incredible list of success that he has had over this Hall of Fame career. Johnny, I want to shift gears for just a few minutes here. This past week, I had the opportunity to MC an event at Keeneland that was focused on jockey mental wellness, and I thought it was extremely productive. Eureka Rosa de Silva was there, of course, a champion jockey in Canada. He's getting ready to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in Canada this year. He's won more than 2 ,200 races in his career. He's won the Queen's Plate. He's a seven -time Sovereign Award winner, but he's always battled his inner demons, if you will. He's had things that he's had to work through. He wrote a book about it called Riding for Freedom, and he has overcome all of that, and he is not alone. There are so many other riders in the sport dealing with things day in and day out. Talk a little bit about the pressures and the things that jockeys have to deal with. You know, obviously, there is a stigma about it, and I think we all go through the ups and downs and the pressure of riding and all these things, and all the accidents that happen to us. I mean, it's a really tough business, and the highs are very high, and the lows are very, very low. So it's really hard to maintain a high level of confidence or the things that you can do because this can humble you really quickly. And through all the accidents and ups and downs, and working seven days a week, and most riders really go to work in the morning, and the work is free just to try to get some business. So it's a really tough, tough business to break in, and if you don't have a great support behind you, it's really tough. I mean, I believe it happens in all sports and everything, but I think it's amplified in our sport with all the danger and everything that we have to go through. So imagine if you don't have a good support behind you, and have a family or some friend that when you go in the ups and downs, it'll be very, very difficult. I say to myself, I go through those emotions to myself, and in the position that I am, I still go through it. Thankfully, I have a really good support family and everybody behind me that you get to go through the tough times and come out of those tough times a lot easier. But all the people that don't have the support, or don't know how to get some help. I mean, it's very important. It's very important that we put that awareness and that there's people out there that need some help. They can get the help that they need. So I think it's a great thing to finally, something is happening, to try to help the talkies, the talkies, SSR writers, whatever needs it in the backstress basically. You still go through things, even though you're at the point you're at in your career, you're still dealing with things. Absolutely. Absolutely. We all have to do it though. All the things that we go through in ups and downs, even at the top, you could be at the top and still have to deal with the whole situation of taking mountains off or going through another thing, an accident, or all the pressure of winning races and all that stuff. Everybody goes through it. No one can say that they don't go through the emotion and the pressure that goes through everybody's mind and riding horses. As dangerous it is and everything that we do, it is. It is tough business. I say that I'm very thankful. I'm very open on my things, on the way I think and the things I talk about it. There are people that don't talk about it, and those are the people that probably are the worst because they keep everything inside and they don't have the support they need and they don't know how to come out of it. I think that's when the problem arises. Those are the guys, all the girls, that needs a lot of help and hopefully if they do need help, they seek for it. It's very tough. It's really tough to explain it to anybody though. That was one of the biggest things that came out of that conference that we had at Keeneland this past week was the fact that so many riders, and there was a survey that was sent out to riders across the country. It received very good participation. One of the biggest things that riders expressed in that survey was the fact that they don't know who to talk to and they don't necessarily want to bring this

Mexico investigates 8 over deadly fire at migrant facility
"Mexican authorities have said that several employees at a migrant center are being investigated for misconduct when a fire broke out where they worked, killing dozens of people. Mexican secretary of security rosacea Velazquez confirmed that 8 suspects were identified, including federal officers and private subcontracted security guards, the fire broke out when migrants being detained at the center, little mattress on fire when they feared they were being moved. The investigation has centered on the fact that guards appear to make no effort to open cell doors for the detained men before smoke filled the room in a matter of seconds by the gates at the international bridges to El Paso, hundreds of mostly Venezuelan migrants gathered, acting on false rumors that the United States would allow them to enter the country. Venezuelan migrants miquel Mota told the AP he wants to leave Mexico after the fire. Now we're a little afraid that they're going to do the same to us here. "Paper and something like the big concerns was like the lack of adequate call cultivation with the people in the community. By the bureau of land management, there are also concerns around the potential loss of income in regards to subsistence resources. They have a case study in their letter that shows that if they are cut off from their statistics resources, it could result in like a 30,000 dollar increase in living costs, which is like, it puts the village at increases the villages. Indeed for supplementing their traditional diets with less nutritional store bought foods if they are cut off from those resources. And then also the industry has a long history of not communicating effectively with the village, especially during times of emergency, there were recorded episodes of gas leaks in the past that cause sickness in the village and they were not provided adequate air quality data at the time and they were cut off from information on what was going on and how they should be responding if they should evacuate or not. And that causes a lot of physical and mental stress on the communities. And again, this is all coming from the letter that the village and city of Louis had put out, and then also just speaking on residents perspective in the state of Velazquez, who is affected by the climate crisis, this project is going to exasperate that crisis. And. Thank you for these insights and the one question I want to ask the follow-up here is you mentioned this loss of income from subsistence resources that could be like a $30,000 annual impact to some Alaska native individuals and families and earlier learning about this project and they're saying up to $17 billion in revenue according to BLM and when you think of a state that has less than a million people in a $17 billion revenue gain, it just seems like such a huge number. It seems like it would just create so much economic prosperity for so many people and yet you're saying it could potentially hurt people in terms of income? Yeah, and I think the important question to ask there too is who is benefiting from the economic income because as far as we know, it's not going to be the residents who are taking the loss into exit. So who will it be then? Who will benefit then? The oil companies, the corporations that are supporting this, the state, the employees that work up there. But it won't be directly the residents who are going to take the loss or the residents of Alaska who have to live with the climate, the impacts on the climate crisis that this is exasperating. Thank you so much. I want to move along to another guest now who is joining us from nuku, Alaska. We have Eunice brower. She is the tribal treasure for nuku and she is a Newbie act. Eunice, welcome to the show. Thanks for joining us. Thank you. Thank you for letting me know to be invited to join in on this call very, very important to be heard. And especially for the people that live in the village. Being a being there, oh, go ahead. Oh, no, I was absolutely unison. That's why we want to hear from you so much because you were there, you're in ground zero. This is personal for you. This is your village. It's going to be directly impacted. Yes. I've attended very many meetings local with the city and the northern borrow and with the state and many government to government meetings, but there's been so many concerns due to these projects being developed, especially the willow project to come into mind expansion of the oil and gas. They first started in pruno and then they come closer and then there's Alpine and then now there's GMT one and then Jim T two and now this willow project. Really, really big project. Very many concerns people having less subsistence, especially if they Caribou, and it's starting to impact the fish because they're so close to the waterways and more the fish come into the river. And now this willow project is so big. Some of the Caribou have been deflected and now we have to go much further to go hunt. A lot of some of our subsistence people that catch these Caribou have noticed that decline in their catch, we don't catch as much trouble as we used to before these projects. And the concerns having to go out further. The cost for our search and rescue teams to have to go rescue the people who had not as a gap. They don't plan effectively and run out of fuel while out there, you know, we have to spend church skew teams to go rescue them. And you know, our environment that we live in is very harsh. It can change really quickly. They do dress properly and have to bring camping gear now to plan that if they do get stranded for some reason that they have to have some sort of protection from the environment. So they do sometimes have to bring camping gear. Okay. And could you talk a little bit more specifically about how some of these threats that you're sharing today, the impact on the fish, the impact of the care women, how will these be directly impacted by these potential oil

"And then all of a sudden you've got Greg Allen and Ryan Lamar and what that's done in a basket and they won like 12 two or something. Yeah, it was awesome. You'll never see that. That was amazing. That was great. And so thanks to Greg Allen, who really did come up and for like a week out of the two weeks he was here was a difference maker for the other week was not really. And that same Yankees team went to Fenway riding high from winning that series at home and got punked three times out of four times in a four game series. So again, Greg Allen, not something you're going to build a postseason legacy on and if the EU are going to compete at least next year, it's not going to be because they had Greg Allen. And so we'll see you on the pirates, you know, sort of sad to see you go, but we were lucky to have you for a full year because he was too good to be triple-A talent, but not good enough to be a roster player all year long. So go get some run in Pittsburgh that's great. The Velasquez thing obviously the most depressing and there's the narrative is the reason why nobody in their right mind thought Andrew Velazquez was the starting shortstop moving forward, certainly not in 2022. He started the wild card game, which is crazy. You know, you can I think what I want to cover on Andrew Velasquez, though, is that Andrew Velasquez go into the angels brought about way too many people who decided to get on their high horse and be like, you know, even if you liked Andrew Velasquez, do you guys even realize you like wasn't that good? He didn't hit that much and is out above average was negative for he wasn't even good on defense, either he slashed two 12 to 62. Yeah, no, I know. I know. I don't think anybody thought Andrew Velasquez was good. When you put that slash line up, did you expect your replies to be full of people just being like, what? I thought he hit three 22 with 7 bombs. No, nobody thought that. Here's the thing that you can do. Be grateful for the memories of somebody and acknowledge they weren't that good. That is a possible thing. My brain can contain both of those ideas. So was Andrew Velasquez's defense four outs below according to ads about average? Sure. Dean Andrew Velazquez make a sprawling play in the hole to beat the red side and get Kim plucky at first base of the laboratories wouldn't have made that nobody, you know, you can't count on a short step to make that he made a spectacular play and saved a huge win for the 80s in a verdict collapse. That did happen. He's a Bronx native who Homer against the twins. That happened. He had a Homer Iggy stadium. That was great. You can celebrate that moment. You can remember his defensive wizardry without having someone who just wants to prove they're smarter than you pop it on Twitter to be like, um, actually, his numbers were decidedly below average. No, I know. And Andrew Velazquez isn't my starting starting shorts. That movie might be your startup. My charting short stuff. But Andrew Alaska this is not my starting shortstop..

"That's just that's the end of the world to me, where your rivals are poaching players from you because of Instagram. Just the downfall of society. What else do we got here guys? Good things to come, maybe. Roll the Chapman look good and that save effort on Wednesday against the angels. Doing some digging, some help from talking yanks. And I was just looking because he was locating his velocity was there as splitter look good. Everything was good. Last 16 outings, dating back to July 6th for the left hander, 15 and a third innings, three earned runs, 9 hits, 24 strikeouts, 11 walks, 8 strikeouts, a one, 8, 8 saves, I'm sorry, not 8 strikeouts. 24 strikeouts, 8 saves, 1.76 ERA. I know it hasn't felt like that because Chapman's gotten into a lot of trouble. Notably in Atlanta when he loaded the bases and then wandy Peralta had to come in and save the day. But hey, dude, that's a lot better than what we saw from Chapman from like what June to end of May to what I don't even remember when it started because I need to erase it from my brain. But nonetheless, it was his first 19 outings or 20 outings that were nails. And then every outing after that was a disaster. He gets back on track, I don't know. Defense trust him. I don't entirely trust him. I'd like to see him get back on track for sure. I'd like to see his regular 9th inning outings where he's pumping gas and overwhelming hitters. But do I trust him in the postseason? I can't. I simply can not. Will it be a problem for the Yankees in the postseason? Probably, why are we going to think this is going to go away? At the very least, on a positive note, we're looking at glass half full. He's getting on track at the perfect time. We're in September. Here comes the stretch. Need to win games in September. So you gotta treat September as the postseason. You're only a game and a half up for the top spot in the wildcard. He had home field advantage, especially if it's going to be the Red Sox man. I really don't want that to happen, but the home field just needs to be a thing..

"So now we got this series against the Orioles coming up in The Bronx guys. What else do you want me to say? It's simply has to be a tweet, a tweet. It simply has to come on Twitter. Sorry. It has to be a sweep. They can not settle for anything. It's the rays lost again to the Red Sox, not entire. I don't know what's ideal for the Yankees now. You know, do you want the raise to keep losing and the Red Sox gaining ground? The Red Sox are a game and a half behind the Yankees now. It's just three in the lost column. And the rays are 6 and a half up on the Yankees for the division. So luckily the Yankees have this three game set against the Orioles that they truly have to take advantage of because the Red Sox next 9 games, oh, I'm sorry. Red Sox next 12 games come against the Indians, not bad, but not great, raise White Sox and Mariners, and those latter 6 are on the road. So ground to make up here for the Yankees who will have the Orioles, the Blue Jays and the mets in the mets, the one makeup game against the twins and then the Orioles again. So this is it, guys. You can really kick the Red Sox. You could really kick the Red Sox down by taking advantage of wins here and watching them lose some

"And a lot's gonna change depending on September and October. 'cause I don't know. Maybe they lose the wild card game. And a complete implosion feels necessary. Maybe they go on a magical run in Jewish Ella is the ALCS MVP. They're probably not trading with that peak as much as they'd like to. Honestly, it's ridiculous, but the small sample size of September and October are probably going to affect this team's next steps more. And then you want them to. Maybe they wouldn't for a ruthless asshole team like the Red Sox who, you know, Red Sox propaganda in full force. Again, as they choke away every bit of their lead, I still saw a lot of hunter Renfro as outperforming Mookie betts takes on Tuesday. Yeah, have them fucking both losers. You could have both. You could have both players. I think an asshole team like the Red Sox would not look at the narrative and would just go and start stripping bear. It doesn't matter who the ALCS MVP is. If we're gonna have a confusing fit for him on the roster in 2024, then he's gone. But I do think the eggies are gonna look at that. And I do think, you know, or shalla is more likely to be the odd man out and then they use a combination of like Wayne Velazquez on the bench next year, move labor to second move DJ to third, mess around, you know, extending or extend Rizzo, keep boy, whatnot. I think the next month that I have is going to matter. But as of now, I do think Velazquez probably the first man off the roster for Torres and they're using him now to use him as long as they have him. Yeah. It's unfortunate, but we hopefully have better guys coming back. Hopefully we're Torres got the rest that he needed to kind of get back on track. We still have not seen what we needed to see from him this year. Maybe that now that's going to be something that you have to watch in September because are they going to want to go into the playoffs with a shaky labor shaky defensive glaber if he doesn't look good over the last three weeks of the season at short?.

Nothing down in the first game kind of sort of six nothing to six four six nine six three two six four two seven four seven five then went with squad and the game the next two games. They were nowhere close but a lot of people are doing all you. He's always beat the twins. It's true the twins it's hilarious. It's weird makes no sense but a lot of people are following that by being like they're worse than normal this year they're terrible. You know what that's said nothing about anything. Prior to coming to new york which again the twins always have problems here but prior to coming to new york the minnesota twins who have struggled this season foreshore went to cincinnati early august august third and fourth split that series seven five and lost six five since as now in the wild card. That's like one of the hot teams in baseball. Split that series on the road went to houston took three from the astros minnesota twins. Oh sorry took three of four from the astros. Nari read that wrong one. Another gate got another game. One it white sox come to minnesota. Minnesota takes two three raise. Come to minnesota. Minnesota takes two three indians golden minnesota minnesota takes two of three. One of those wins was a walk off. Two of those indians wins. We're walkup so the twins are coming in having split series with the hottest team in baseball taking three or four from the astros beating the white sox and raise and indians and three series in the yankees decimate them in three games. Great job yankees. Twins are at their hottest. The hottest the twins ben all year twins are supposed to win the division easily. Are i mean. I don't know people like the white sox playoff team. They aren't and that's fine but they've played like a playoff team in august and he just took them.

Otherwise you're dumping alberta brave no thank you again. He's been a borderline closer for like two and a half three weeks now. Lucas leaky. no thanks. Don't want to get rid of him. He's not maybe they decide. He's not maybe reno is probably coming back for a bullpen. Roll down the stretch. But maybe they decide he's not i mean there's no way there's gonna work out lewis. "On this roster for more than like another couple of days. And that's insane but again what i mean. How do you demoted him. But also how do you keep him. What do you do unless you pretend. Laboratories is a season ending injury. You can do that if you want. I mean somebody's gonna get hurt at some point this roster never stays all the for that long but how can you justify demoting but you can't justify keeping it gets tough too because look. We're expecting corey. Kluber back in the next couple of weeks on. So that's gonna how you home ed's to have the free up and klay homes have to free up other roster spot so i really don't know what you do Velazquez obviously is not going to stay. I would like him to stay. I i love his defense. It's a shame because we have been watching him over these last A week it's been about a week and a half or something like that. No long And you can just tell the you could tell the difference you can you can look at gleyber torres botched you can watch them both play and you could just tell labor towards is not a natural shortstop and that's not really a knock against him. I don't i the the organization is right. He's a better second baseman than he is. A shortstop i understand. He came up in the minors playing a lot of short but The natural instincts aren't there. It's more passive defense than it is. Aggression you've seen velazquez Take charge a ton of balls in the infield and rip him over the first base so many times glacier towards it feels keys aiming to throw to first base or waiting the ball to take that extra bounce to him This is simply the tests if you've been watching yankees baseball all year and it just goes to show that the gifts that fielders have a shortstop it's very instinctual and andrew velasquez very much has that instinct. It's also helpful that he's switch hitter and he is obviously not the greatest city in the world but he's certainly aggressive and he likes to try to hack at pitches when he when he thinks he's getting the right one Thirteen games not overly impressive with a to forty two average. But he's homered. He's got six guys. He stolen a couple of bags. He's got a triple in their six runs scored in those thirteen game so stuff's happening when when he's in the lineup and you know what when you're when you're glove is excelling in the field. Not everybody's going to really be zoned in the microscope on you when you're you're in the batter's box and that's kind of what's been happening with labor torres. His glove hasn't been great is defense is look very passive and then everyone's expecting oh but this guy's got thirty five home or power so we can expect something very good from him on offense. Can't we not this year. I don't know why I hope labor's going through the motions and trying to figure out what's wrong. The conventional wisdom would suggest that it the the problem is. He's playing a he's back at shortstop full-time and He doesn't really have confidence down. And it might be affecting his approach plate So it just. It's crazy because velazquez really not not blowing not blown away with numbers on offense. But he's he's.

So that's the Belmont field. We'll talk about the other races, uh, in the course of the show, But right now, let's welcome Roger Neubauer from thorough graph to the show. Good morning, Roger. Good morning, J. How are you doing? I'm doing well, sir, Are you all ready for this huge, huge day. Yes, I've been getting ready for a couple days actually had you are correct. This is quite a card and really looking forward to getting into this today and I think the track is going to be much better. I think everybody watched yesterday and that they lose of rain that came down and, uh, but I expect the track to be fast today. They're dry, it dries out pretty quickly. It certainly does. So, uh, yeah, I I would say Thorogood half had a couple of nice scores throughout the weekend before, uh before I forget, not that I ever forget anything. But let me just mention a couple of your your exploits at Gulfstream Park yesterday. 10 40 winner in race eight at a $38 exacta and you scored last week at Churchill delivering a 55 80 exacta. The 91 combination Array six and then last Sunday and raised one of Churchill $25. Winter Nice and Race. Six of $42. Exactly, So you certainly did a little damage for the fans. Yeah, it's been. But It's always It's always a good track for us. Yeah, Yeah, definitely So, And it's a nice full field. So before we get into your picks, Roger, I asked both you and Steve if you might come up with a Belmont memory or two, and you came up with one that you're you finally remember if you can Please tell us your father's Belmont memory. Yeah. So my fondest memory. It's uh um Is of the 2000 and four Belmont and Smarty Jones. Um we were fortunate enough that year to see all of his preparation is, um In Arkansas, the Southwest rebel in the Arkansas Derby and then wasn't at the Derby or the Preakness, but got a chance to go to the Belmont, especially when it was clear it was going to be a Triple Crown. And there was 120,000 people there that day. And that horse. That horse was a rock star. I mean, they had a camera back in this stall, and every every time the camera went on that horse 120,000 people stood up and started cheering. I mean, it was just nuts the entire day, the second he walked on the track to come to the saddling ring. It was just it was an amazing thing to be around. And it was amazing to hear be able to hear a pin drop with 120,000 people around you after they crossed the finish line. That is the quietest I've ever heard a crowd go ever Yeah. And, uh, certainly, Smarty Jones had the Triple Crown on the line, and, uh, Certainly gave it everything he had. Yeah, you know, coming into the stretch, She still had a good read. Nobody was paying attention to anybody behind them. They were just looking at him, So the crowd was just it was mayhem. And it was really just a fun day to be there. The cards. The card was still very good. You know, It's not like it is now with eight grade ones. But card was still very good. It was a fun day to be around. We actually had a horse in an earlier race on the card that day, so that was really nice to And it was just It was a lot of fun and horse that we got to watch, Sort of mature at Oakland Park. And then unfortunately, the they didn't end like we wanted it to. But it was still an amazing experience. Someone I'll never forget. Yeah, so Roger, are we going to start today? Well, we'll start at Belmont, and we're going to do the Met Mile as you mentioned earlier. And the thing we like about this race, we're not against Nick's go, but what we are against our two horses that are going to beat that rather heavily. The 2nd and 3rd favorites. And the first one. We're against his mischievous Alex. Um The one post is not the best post in the world for a mile race at Belmont. But besides that this horse jumped way up to a lifetime Top negative. 4.5 last time out. And we're really expecting this horse to react to this today and at 5 to 2, maybe even 2 to 1. This horse. This horse is a play against as well as the third favorite silver State at 72 Morning line. This one is different. This one is just not fast enough to go with the other The other horses in the race, So the main play here is we're against the the one and the three. Yeah, that was gonna go with that We're going to go with, um three horses. Well, then we can't toss Mexico. He's just too fast. He used to run two negative quarters in his career. Each time that he's bounced a little bit. He's come right back to that number. Now you're throwing something new into it here with the ship overseas, and we'll see. But anyway, we have to use him. But we're we really like Dr Post number 2 92, who ran a negative. 1.5 hasn't had a lot of career races, then really looks to be second started his four year old career sitting on a big A big race. And the last one will uses by my standards who ran a negative to last out. I like courses like this. I don't even don't know what your thoughts are, J. But as I courses that are proven that a mile and an eighth and and further and then they're cutting back to this mile distance, they just sometimes to me seem to have a better foundation in a straight Mylar. But that's just my opinion. Yeah, I agree. Certainly at your favorite track in Oakland Park in that Oakland Mile, just really took to it. That was by my standards. First tried a mile.

"The victory ride kicks off the stakes action here at Belmont Park tomorrow afternoon grade three early in the caught has just the feel of five phillies. GOING TO GO Six and a half furlongs as for the three year old's warning line favors one francs. Rock Cat Hall of Famer Bill Will Give Fellow Hall of Famer John Velazquez a leg up and this phillies done very little wrong on her career. She's three for seven. With four second-place finishes ran second in a couple of graded stakes, including the grade one spin away up at Saratoga last year last seen winning a third level allowance optional claimer. She uses stakes. Winner took the any limit kick off three year old season three starts back. and. Probably the only reason that this race isn't later in the card is that it's a five Horsfield and Franks? Rakhat is three to five on the morning line, and she may be the the loan speed in race, so she's going to be tough to beat at three to five, but that's a pretty short price, considering there some pretty good up and coming phillies near now I think number four center. I'll I'm going to give her another shot for. For Chad Brown and Joel Rosario Sheila Great Getting Her Maiden Win Gulfstream Park, when bet down to three to five at the end of March then came back in a tough allowance race at Churchill downs where she was really over bet, she was three to five that day against another very impressive maiden winner of this one for Steve Asmussen in casual casual ran a great race that day center I'll had all sorts of problems. She didn't break that well. She had trouble during the race, and she was just really never in at any point. I think it's a racy can kind of draw a line through? If she runs closer to the way she did and her debut. I think she's the one that could give Franks rock cat. The biggest problem Franks rocket will probably get the lead I would think Rosario would have center I'll sitting justin behind her and seeing if they can outgun into the line going six and a half furlongs. With you I'm going to take a shot with center. Rile planner. If? When I plan! Early took five tomorrow I will use both Franks rocket and center, but I'll tell you what I think. You can make a case also for up in smoke was undefeated and sprints. She's four five and a career. Lone blemish came when George Weaver tries to stretch her out Hollywood wildcat. Go at Gulfstream Park. She's raced exclusively of Gulfstream, in fact, steady diet once. Once a month February march April may June now. She gets a race in July. Here over Big Sandy, she wanted the game face overboard last time out for weaver Rod Ortiz Junior. Who wrote her in her debut against fellow Florida breads down at Gulfstream Park's in the climb back aboard for the first time. Since that day looks, you'll need a little help up front if Franks, rockets able to set an easy pace I. She's going to be very very tough. I think Senator I'll be the first one to come calling. Those are the two up in smoke. If you're looking to three deep, I don't think you need to center for Bobby and I race number three goes as the great three six and a half for a long victory ride go to the end of the card. Eleven race card like I said earlier, and the final four races make up an all stakes pick four, and it starts in reasoning with the greed three poker. Flat Mile on the turf for many years. This was the fourth of July staple. On the naira calendar here it is now as part of a super five stakes card. In, the poker though. On the widener, so they come out of that shoot. On the clubhouse turn we get a field of eight entered for the turf as a main track. Only it's all relevant with the way. The weather's been here. I would imagine you know there's supposed to be some rain. We're recording the show Friday afternoon supposed to be some rains rather day on Friday and into the evening. I can't imagine it enough to take this off the turf, so let's say it will be a field of eight.

Kingpins Daily: Jhon Jairo Velasquez
"Today's quote is from Hitman. John Jairo Popeye Velazquez of the medicine drug cartel the less was Pablo Escobar's right hand. Man throughout the s until his arrest in one thousand nine hundred eighty nine upon his release. Velazquez started a new life. Leveraging his notoriety into a Popular Channel Book Deals and film roles in the two thousand seventeen interview. Velazquez defended his past life as a criminal saying with the politicians. We have in Columbia. Being abandoned is an honor. Velazquez delivered this incisive quote. Only a few years ago but the government corruption. He alludes to has a very long history one that is deeply entwined with the rise of the cartels in the Mid Nineteen Ninety s Columbia's then presidential candidate a Nesto. Some pair was accused of accepting six million dollars from a drug cartel though. Some pet narrowly won election and survive to impeachment proceedings. These signaled the corruption had reached the very highest levels of the Colombian government. It didn't end there in the two thousand six para political scandal. Five congressmen were arrested for collaborating with a paramilitary group that was responsible for killing thousands of Colombians civilians and as recently as two thousand eleven. Thirteen members of Columbia's Tax Authority were arrested for embezzling millions of dollars from the country's taxpayers. Over the US. This level of rampant corruption has undermined public faith in the Colombian government and election process within this context. One can see how Velazquez mine ocoee that compared to these politicians being abandoned is an honor however it must be pointed out that Popeye Alaska's was much more than just a bandit. He was a ruthless and prolific assassin. Beliefs Kaz began working for notorious drug lord. Pablo Escobar at the tender age of seventeen before joining the cartel. He had tried out the navy where he got the nickname Popeye for his strength and prominent jaw but Velazquez quickly left the service in search of a more thrilling line of work becoming Pablo. Escobar's enforcer was much more in line. With what Young Velasquez was looking for. He took to the bloody work with. Gusto over the course of his criminal career Velazquez claim to have personally murdered more than three hundred people as well as participating in the killings of thousands more in the midst of escalating violence Velazquez masterminded the deployment of upwards of two hundred car bombs against rival druglords and government officials and in Nineteen eighty-nine ve Alaska's targeted a Colombian presidential candidate by planting a suitcase bomb on a plane. Which killed all one hundred seven people aboard as well as three more on the ground he later described this mass murderer as a work of art. Even rampant government corruption begins to Pale in comparison to the level of Violence Velazquez. Took pleasure in meeting out. Presumably Popeye would have happily continued on as a hitman indefinitely but his exploits eventually caught up with him. In nineteen eighty. Nine Velasquez was sentenced to thirty years in prison for drug terrorism and the murder of a Colombian presidential candidate. He only served twenty two years before his release in two thousand fourteen with prison behind him. Velazquez publicly renounced his old ways and embarked on a new career as a kind of pundit and public figure he launched a youtube channel called Popeye Arab Pentito or remorseful Popeye in which he held court on various political issues affecting Columbia. The channel quickly racked up more than one point two million subscribers and Alaska's parlayed the online popularity into to book deals and a movie about his life which he directed and starred in Popeye also gave private tours of medicine highlighting the sites of cartel escapades though. Velazquez claimed to repent for his sins often and loudly. There is some evidence to suggest that his apology tour was more about attention and notoriety ben contrition in some videos. Popeye posted. He visited the graves of people he murdered and described in vivid detail. Exactly how he killed them. Perhaps as a way to relive his glory days also Velazquez reacted poorly when people didn't accept his apology for example when the son of a man who died in that plane bombing refused to forgive him. Popeye called him a bad man with an evil heart ultimately. There's no way to know pies true motivations but whatever Velasquez was he could certainly turn of phrase for example. Popeye once said it is better to die of a bullet than of a disease in bed. Ironically in February twenty twenty Alaska's passed away at age fifty seven from stomach cancer. It seems death is the great

camera legal round the block a man in the back dead who is going to pin this on us now are always the doctor boys I would be looking getting nowhere near the appendix I'll be working towards the leveraging as the light scratching on vets at voice box towel enjoys Dhabi heavy wealth to talk about on Taylor downdraft on Saturday fans wind the Melbourne Cup the Siamese Prince of aerated law she came third in the rice has that changed anything look into the rice it's now seven eight dollars and obviously we've seen through history that you win the Lexus the wholesome the SOB whatever it's called utain to run really well in the Melbourne Cop in the the market seems to gravitate toward you we'll get to that very shortly bought the market did change a little bit off to the barriers or war we're going to get the market up a brand new let's go through the market rocket as it stands at the moment and glass who's coming to five or tim that was a bad I fifty a couple of weeks ago Constantinople touch sevens at had fiend Shit tain bound declares in the cross Cantu the extra kilos this she is surprised by being Il Paradiso having a lot of pundits h. y. the Prince of Erin and move always at either over the table and Raymond Tusk at Nineteen downdraft is the one that came means southern France bits bits two thousand dollars on on the five southern France at twenty one dollars all the way Dan Hunting Horn who won two weeks ago at forty one dollars here it's a big rice guys on the page and there's still some genuine probably live chances there as well toy that we've had since the barrier to that the punishment the most sports bit the favorite mode aglow I told is into six fifty after the barrier draw guy to probably a big advantage for that horse obviously it's good it's about thirty two hundred meters but maybe the guy alleviates it's a couple of those problems with that and the other one was lying there the to the pun is one of the moment for us at sports is there anything out of Sessa die the why the trek plied that you can take in the Melbourne Cup look other than the fact that you are dandruff obviously going really well he's going to be fit we still have these trucks going apply to be honest it was quite wet on Saturday there's GonNa be some rain today on Monday and supposedly drawing we know it's a joint track but he's going to draw on add some confidence seem Flemington because what we saw on Saturday Dhabi is they used the entire tract I didn't just stick to the fence that didn't stick for the day in the middle like I'm Dan wide and we sold melody battle-winning Michael Grand and also fees impact and then towards the end of the day that I wish shifting off and leaving the fence about four horses of a gap to the inside running row also it was a great spread right across the track all wouldn't expect it to be too much I've got to get through it on Melbourne Cup Day and jockeys go to pick their best path so Jewish touched on it a little bit of inclement weather I think it'll just help Flemington because it's such a great draining track they've prepared these track for the full days play on Oregon it was really fair on Saturday more I'm really looking forward to catching up with the hall of fame trying to dive is he's got three runners in the Melbourne Cup and we're going to get him on the final on a little bit lighter so he won't be able to help some throughout the show today I'm looking forward to that is your task done well let let's go through all the runners one by one in Reis Book Order Starting With Number One cross candidate last year obviously a little bit more white penalty the she does a two-horse classy Ohio UCS V8's now with goodell from blue forever because of course Canis Ripa but that's last year that's irrelevant now you go to carry fifty seven and a half doing now you can get thirty two hundred Mehta's after one the Melvin copy he wants him otherwise he went to do boy I wanNA group to their he started two dollars fifty in this ledger most recent run looking Ren fourth I think back in that rice it was a little bit of a worrying run but he has the pay over a lot of these other international forces put it this way Celli police and absolutely gun he's done it before these horses this is done it before he can win the rice he's not my talk for everybody can definitely win the rice is to have been more helpful because I'm going to trust him at Flemington Lymington as a genuine style what we saw last year was that three year old northern hemisphere hemisphere foam come to the fore carried fifty two key allies he was the best background Gripe Gripe profile leading into that rice since then Josie mentioned you want my which was terrific winning out of the thirty two hundred meters so to me that look walk a whole studied improved to travel back tonight in and then he ran out of a full thousand meters he got one point nine links off stratovarius in gripe form rice in the Gold Cup with D. XP just let's be in front of him as well and then he wasn't far why beyond Stratovarius again in the goodwood and then Dayton full links I'll forgive him for that he's had a really good I think he's a better whole this year and net foam and those four runs within twelve months suggest that he's a bit holes that's fifty seven and a half the reason Gordon Moore top four is because I'm going to trust him as the genuine style in the rice think if you've got class law came you can come back drawing a good guy with fifty seven and a half get locked away and he's going to use he's that he's going to be more top four for those reasons I think we're going to see a bit of a patent horses that can win absolutely smell them cap so that is a big number one cross cannock came winless got the number to murder glass obviously after the barrier draw eight fifty six dollars fifty dining line on board came in as well Ken Wayne counting anyway any of that process of six dollars fifty Moran knowing nine dollars fifty but of a winning chance look he wanted to cool field cop I think the inside guy is the positive Damian line is absolutely able when he's a fantastic jockey there is concerns whether it gets thirty two hundred meters stay in that's probably the concern for the Japanese but I think the inside guy allows him to maybe get a bomb and just because up clued up if you can be with four hundred maters guy I've got no daddy can win the rice doubts on the coffee cupping teams if he had every opportunity to win that rice and still on the run high twenty four and a half twelve and a half so it wasn't sensational last four hundred dollars two hundred a pretty moderate Tampa he's got meaningful the Japan and as a guns I think sometimes we can fall into the brains of twenty four hundred a Coffee Cup win locked that didn't right off the roof in terms of figures that was he's I have a twenty four hundred proud of that he was a two-time winner I have a twenty two hundred police phones brain around the mall and a quarter so easy to to brilliant and is he wanted to he's best at fifty-six kilos against genuine thirty two hundred natal's GonNa be strong that you can trust at the end of the rice with that Madam on top four and now he gets the best run but he's going to need the bush guidance it'll suck up beyond side he can use that tune afoot but easy the brain Ho slot the Saudi thinks these talk horses that we've saying come through at the mall and a quarter and right really well and Hoy but just with the fifty six and not being tested beyond twenty four hundred meters of got that question macaroni happy to him on Kenny Win Not yes yes okay number three mass reality twenty six dollars at at the moment Frankie Dettori onboard can't win yes but I just don't know enough about the tone four one hundred twenty three matches up pretty well but time for one hundred twenty three fifty four and a half roy it up there I mean that's a fair wack he's the handicap has got a hold of him there's no doubting that he ran fifty alleged that cross Canada ran fourteen cross Canada Tudo is fifty Master Valley started fifteen does he can win but I've got him into bat twenty one twenty six dollars look I wouldn't be knocked over but he won't be my betting strategy is to he can he can running the top bite for show this horse because he's a genuine style and he's trolling barrier wine he gets a fifty five and a half and he's foolish stratovarius there's a lot of this

Jose Ortiz Interview - October
"Welcoming Jose Ortiz who is a native of Puerto Rico and his one more than nineteen hundred races in what has been just a a stellar career and that career still going strong and he's with me now here on H. R. N. Jose Good Morning My friend Mike give having yeah. Thanks for taking a little time. I know you're a busy working horses. This morning. Never ends does it does not if you want to be the best which right now you certainly are my friend Brendan. You know it's interesting. I mentioned being a native of Puerto Rico one of the jockeys who mentored you when you came here and one of the people that you looked up to is his hall of Famer Johnny Velazquez who last week set the record for most greatest stakes victories by jockey in the history of the sport and that has to make you very proud. I know that yeah yeah we are happy about it and it keeps going throwing you know hopefully he can give winning some more on winning out much again until you know until heater dyers what makes him so good then you got a lot of these. Atlanta for the sport and I think that having taken to the next level where he's been for awhile you know yeah he certainly he's been doing it for a long time and still doing it at a very high level. How many great stakes victories are you behind him now. I don't know I have made the way to go yeah one day well that win yesterday and the Phoenix was impressive. This is a horse. You've you've been on before you knew him. You get back aboard him yesterday and he's able to hold off Whitmore who was putting in that late run. Take me through the race Jose. Well we broke. We broke very good. expect expecting a much faster pace but they did in in came out of five dollars. I thought they would and I was able to be closer than I than I thought. I was going in two weeks so I think that well We have a very pain trip when I ask him to. Well what they're for me the whole time. You know he's a horse worse by intimacy if that when you were riding him last year and even this year at Saratoga he was trained by Chad Brown now he's trained by Steve Asmussen. Ah when you were riding him before he was always knocking on the door but he couldn't quite get past horses like promises fulfilled you yesterday you beat him and everybody everybody else. Is there a difference. Did you feel something different now with engage than you did last year. He always been a ah very nice or worse. I think some more mature before others on. I think he'd take a while but I think he finally figured out you know. Did you know that Moore was gaining on your yesterday. I didn't knew what Whitmore Kabaya fell somebody coming out. You can tell yeah I could yeah. Did you know you had enough left in the tank. He very game he always has been and I knew what GonNa try but you know something this all horrors you know he's just turned four so there's all live orders season and they are very good. You know they they come in. They coming at you like wait Marino. He's very nice or you know that win. In the Phoenix was part of a Multi Win Day on opening day of Keeneland then you you've had several days in your career where you've won multiple races like that. I asked you what makes John Velazquez so good. What makes Jose Ortiz so good. I don't let somebody out of that. Answer that question. I guess right to be myself on gave that horses the best chance to win but you also worked very hard I mentioned you're out working in horses this morning. I know you're being humble and and that's what's part of makes you part of. What makes you so good but Jose you work your tail off and put me the in in the saddle with you for minute if you will if I can use that term take me through like your routine in your approach to riding races. How do you get ready to go out there. Every day and ride was everything star on the when the overnight comes up so I have to see we shorts on on quantum there I go the R F and and they got the raises and I put him whatever I think they should be and you know I have to talk to a trainers on and follow their their instructions but at the same time I want to I want her to be relax and that's that's what I try to be happy and I think they control and relaxed. We'll give you a running the end of it yeah you know. Johnny will always tell tell me about his different plans that he has going into the starting gate the plan a plan b the Plan C. and you hope you don't have to get any further than that but once the gates open you can listen to the trainers instructions all day long but once the gates open things can change quickly right very quickly. What do you you do at that point. Do you say Oh my God. I gotTa follow his instructions or do you say I just gotTa. Let my instincts takeover in and try to ride this race the way it needs to be ridden now so you've got to let your instincts they over because it's very tough to execute a plan when their plan doesn't work from from the gate you know. Yep You gotta change everything so I think you just gotTa Julia uh-huh. Yeah everything you could do everything changes in and you just have to adjust and that's why I've always said you know jockeys in terms of there's always that debate are jockeys true athletes athletes and I think you know I've said for years but pound for pound jockeys the most gifted athletes that we find in all sports and I have no doubt about it and you're certainly right there Jose. Let's talk about the horses that you're going to be aboard today. You're in all of the great stakes races at keeneland which is to be expected matter of fact. Thank you might be riding every single race at keeneland today. nice to be in demand extravagant. Kid is a horse. You're going to be aboard in the WOODFORD stakes. That's is the first greatest stakes today. What can you tell me about. Extravagant kid very nice hard. I had the opportunity to ride him. One time before and we won he's doing very good very fox. Horse doesn't need to be on the late which is very helpful full on way like junkets. Today we think is very life so right to win all right and then in the next race in the TC a talked to me and I think I'm saying that name correctly but talk to me the horse. You're going to be aboard there. You've been aboard her. The the last two starts second last time out in the Press Kyle downes master stakes on September sixteenth. Tell me a little bit about her. It's very nice to write very easy last time. She has run very very very good. we are expecting seeming to or better than last two times. I think she got shut all right and then the first lady turn our attention there you go to the first lady stakes miss bad behavior for Richard. Balta says the Horse Year aboard. What do you know about her. I won on her Kentucky Down She got some sleep but he's he's also stayed on the race so let's see how they're they're in writing about her because she he doesn't need elite. Also g come come on. We gotta go pole so let a break and make sure shade in a winning position I during your yeah how much different is writing this keeneland turf of course then of course like Kentucky Downs Kentucky down says the undulating up and down configuration. How much different is it run getting more like we do every day. You know saying Kinda you you know over same thing by Kentucky different. Go Up and down left right so I think in Kentucky and it's all about the horse like it you WanNa be okay. It doesn't like nothing you can do about like well. Let's hope that this bad behavior likes the keeneland turf course later today in the classroom breeders futurity Max Field for Brendon. Walsh is the second time that Brendan will give you a leg up in a greatest stakes today. Tell me about Max field. You went on him last time out to very nice coat a win first time out very nicely actually that day a he was a speed favor drug. Nobody was coming from behind and he did which is very impressive to me so I think we have something here. We got very nice coats so hopefully put it together and stay undefeated talk to for to all right and the last one admission office This is a horse who you road last year but haven't been on them for the last four starts you get back aboard admission office and that is in the the shad while Turf Mile. Tell me about him. What you remember about writing him before is on very cool hope to ride very easy going on to be honest? I love him. I think we had a huge show the winds along really how come because I think he's is a nice source if their truck come from behind and here something other threats you about to rush these sorts. BEC- they're stretchy short here. I wouldn't have to we go. We got our loan stretching so I think it was the drug I mean he. He did alright at one eight zero. He don't good with Y'all yup so he's got big right now. You can tell what what makes Jose Jose Ortiz so good. He knows every race that these horses have run before he gets aboard and he did indeed win. Three starts back at Keeneland in the spring which Joel Rosario Dario Award winning an allowance race getting up by neck and admission office the Horses Jose will be aboard in today's Shell Turf Mile Jose. I know it's a busy morning. I know you've got horses assist works. I won't keep you thank you so much for spending a little time. Congrats on all your success. My friend and I'll look forward to catching up with us. We make our way to Santa Anita in about a month. Mike thank you.
