Donald Trump reportedly spent $70K to style his hair during 'The Apprentice'

"The New York Times reported on Donald Trump's tax returns, one detail stood out too many. Trump claimed that he spent $70,000 on hairstyling for his reality, show The Apprentice and classified it as a business expense so that he could deduct it from his tax bill. And that made NPR's Tom Dreisbach wonder is that legal? When people get in trouble with the IRS. They might call a lawyer like Sam Brotman in San Diego. Could I just ask you have you ever dealt with a case with someone who claimed a haircut as a deduction? No, I haven't. We've had a lot of strange deductions in this firm without a car rentals trips to Vegas, but a hair beauty salon type of staff is very, very difficult to pass off. It's because it is illegal to claim a personal expense as a business expense. Still, the line between personal and business can be blurry. And over the years, people have tried to make the case to the IRS people like Richard Drake in the 19 sixties, Drake served in the Army and the Army required him to get a haircut every two weeks. So Drake figure that's a business expense, and he deducted 50 bucks for haircuts. The text court disagreed and found that expenses for everyday grooming are inherently personal, even for soldiers. It would have say You're a performer and you need to look or sound a certain way to get jobs like the actor Ned Sparks. You got a swell voice and a great personality. You're different. You got class that sparks in the movie the gold diggers of 1933. You might have heard that when he said the word class. There was a slight whistle. Will sparks heard it, too. And so we got dentures to fix it at tax time, he wrote off the cost of those dentures as a business expense. Because he said he'd lose jobs without fixing his teeth. But the court said it would be difficult to imagine anything more personal than a set of false teeth denied again. Courts of referenced both of those cases when judging whether people can write off hair care, and that brings us to Donald Trump in 2000 for while promoting the Apprentice, Trump said his hair care was actually pretty simple. You know what I do I take a shower, wash it. I then comb it. I then said it and then I spray it and it's good for the day. But Trump's taxes claim more went into the hair. In just a wash. Koman spray a lot more 70,000. Is that the number? That's the number that's a big number. And that's Jennifer blew in and accounting professor at the Wharton Business School, she says if Trump paid that money for his everyday look That is most likely illegal. But she says there may be an exception if the president was having his hair done right as he was on the set of the apprentice, pinning down the hair in a certain way to be on screen. Then that expense would be potentially deductible. That is, if Trump rather than the show paid for it.

"On arguably the best team in basketball all season long. I know that the Milwaukee Bucks had the best record, but because of the Bucks starting Tio dip right before the pandemic struck. And because they were a flame out last year, and we know what LeBron does the playoffs. You could have easily made the argument before we got to the end of the play offs. No, the Lakers were actually The best challenger, the best odds to win a championship in many bookmakers had that in Vegas going into the playoffs, So you have a wild card essentially in the heat and an underdog in a big way in Vegas, his eyes take it on. The best team in basketball with the best player in basketball for the last 10 to 15 years and the best too. Star tandem in the N B, A with LeBron and Anthony Davis. So we can see how the deck is stacked right? And yet Jimmy Butler is not going there. Jimmy Butler says. We don't consider ourselves underdogs. He says. Maybe you didn't pick us to be here. And maybe you won't pick us to win this. But we don't use the term underdog. He said. Quote. We may say that we have a chip on our shoulder. But I don't think we're the underdog. I think we're a really good team. We play together. Everybody knows their role. We just compete. I think we're supposed to be here. That's how we think of it to me. Tow us. That's all that matters were not underdogs. End of quote. Is Jimmy Butler delusional. Or purposefully playing mind games with his team. It is where we begin your cold Open. Don't say that Bring in anybody else, but I just don't think that underdogs. I don't sew like that. Nobody picked us to be here. That's okay. Never taking us to run. Even that's okay. But we understand that we embrace them because I truly don't care just going right here and compete together like we always have. And I'm cerulean done. But at the end of today, we're gonna do this our way in the way that was worked for us all your own. It's d ays. Top story. Your cold Open Mind games by Jimmy Butler. Damn it! He's a basketball genius. I love this play by Jimmy Butler Love it. Look, everybody in the world is going to say Lakers and four Lakers and five no more than Lakers and six you'd be crazy to pick the heat, and I'm certainly not going to be that guy either. I think the Lakers win this In a fairly short matter. But if your Jimmy Butler what.

"Win. That is undeniable. What is it? Is it I think it's just we just played for one another. That's that's what it is. We don't let anyone down. We just make sure that we get in and sometimes we get down to just stand together. We know there's strength in numbers. We just stand up and just go after you said you had enough left in the tank. And you did. Now you get a chance to go against Seattle. A team maybe twice in the regular season. How do you see this final shaping up? They start on Friday. I mean, it's gonna be a lot of fun. It's just gonna be something probably like this. We're just gonna go ahead and it's the first time and it's so you know, we're we're new lease to it. But, you know, we're gonna get the job done. You know, by any means necessary. We just gotta come. They're on to us. It's a great point of this is just your third year in the league. What have you learned about yourself in this MVP season? Getting your team to the final that you can lean on? I can't let anything up. I can't let my teammates go out. I can't let I gotta leave it all out there on the corner. That's the biggest thing that I've learned in 2020. I got to give it my all and leaving over, guys. So we're just gonna go back, get it with the good Seattle team and we're going to toss the ball up in pleasure. Major Wilson with our Holly Rowe. Las Vegas aces. Seattle Storm WN BA Finals, ESPN analysts Rebecca Lobo. It's only fitting that we see this matchup because during the course of the regular season, they were the best two teams. We have the top two M V P candidates Asia, Wilson finished first and voting brand is Stuart second and voting So we're going to see the big guns going at one another in a finals match up, but I think a lot of people expected At the end of the regular season. Is still all in for week for we've been given a mandate to compare is if the game was going to be played and played on time. And so that is our mentality. We've gone about today's business from a game planning standpoint, with that mentality, trusted medical experts and they deem it safe for us to proceed. Then we will go down there with the intention of plan and play in the wind. Whether they do play is still one of the big questions for that needs to be answered this week or When they might play. ESPN is Diana Rossini. There's a competitive advisory committee that the NFL put together during this off season when they were trying to navigate how they were going to go about this in this cove ID era and basically what they do. Is they listening to the situation which we see the situation today? That's presenting itself which is Tennessee is not allowed in there facility. They're not gonna be able allowed. Back in until Saturday at the earliest. At this point, so they obviously have the disadvantage. Everything is virtual. They can't practice that have to do a virtual walkthrough. But I spoke to Tennessee today, and they're mentally prepared to do all this virtually and play on Sunday. Now a source did share with me that the that the league is going to try to at least give the Titans one day of practice before they would play the game. So, for example, let's say they're back in on Saturday they be able to practice on Sunday they would play on Monday because one of the contingency plans is the play on Monday. Or Tuesday. Those are the two days that are still on the table, so it's really going to come down to when Tennessee can get back in the building and Scott. We're waiting for more covert test because the team was tested on Monday, and those positive tests that came back today or from were the result of Monday. So now we're going to see If the tests are gonna come back positive for Tuesday, as we know this virus tends to incubate itself, so it could take some time. Fingers crossed, though, that we get the news across the league that more negative tests come back. Keyshawn J. Willens. Uman, of course, will have Maura on the NFL's week. Belichick reaches milestone as Patriots top Raiders 36-20

"Everyone is time for the bonus episode postgame recap for Vegas Nation podcast. I'm your host Heidi Fang and I'm joined with our readers writers, Ed Greenie, Adam. Hill we're going to break down what happened here in the Raiders Lost Thirty six to twenty against the New England Patriots here Gillette Stadium in Foxborough at an ir up in the press box Adam back in Vegas a from my vantage point it was. A lot of mistakes made by the raiders, which is something you can't do against the bill belichick coach team. So we're GONNA get all into that here but I I want to remind everybody that we are brought to you by Salmon Ash, indeed visa and also favor. So make sure to subscribe wherever you're listening and what was your first take on what you saw out in the field today with the raiders. You're right. They did everything you can't do and win on the road or anywhere turn the ball over three times. Once rent on. Didn't protect car when they were driving. Me fumbled the Fumble Alina Game Matter Games already overby fumbled the end zone. In the second half, they just wore down defensively I actually done the first thirty minutes be interested at him. I think thought the first thirty minutes they played. As good. A defense as they haven't a while let's be honest. Thirteen points here cam help them a lot. He wasn't any third, but they were down on the second Apple Sikhism Derek. Carr in the offense couldn't stand field. He gave up two hundred and fifty yards total rushing late Sony Michelle when expert in its players per talking, you know these of League so they were down and they just couldn't match. Match up. So a bad game they printed everything you can do and what on the road so Adam how much in fact that these running bags like just through the defense offered their game because I don't think they were looking to contain the likes of three different running backs in this one I think they prepared to contain Cam Newton? What was your thoughts on the running game? I think I was definitely a part of it and I think there was definitely adjustments made. By the Patriots coaching staff because as as ED put out for the first half of the, Patriots were able to run the ball somewhat. But I thought a it wasn't. There wasn't those explosive plays. There wasn't those big plays downfield and it was a kind of picking up some yards here. They're moving the ball effectively but not really gashing the raiders defense and then. They figured out something in the run game after halftime and I'll be interested to find out the later in the week. Interested to get the the all twenty two film comes out like Tuesday. Look a little what happened but I think just at first glance without really looking into what they were doing on the line maybe differently. They definitely started to go to some more cutback plays where they I thought really were able to take advantage of some over pursuit of the writer side in particular from Jonathan Abram, who you know, we know what he can do. In terms just flying around offensively and having people would kind of sending a message for that defense but at the same time. You can use that aggression against him and I think the Patriots kind of figure that out a little bit and it really hit him with a big plays on a place where he got into the gap, he was near the bulk area but just couldn't make up Adams exactly right and and they're going to have to here's the thing about a player John Neighbor might think they love is aggressiveness in his hitting all that he's got a swagger Jim and I. Hate to say this, but sometimes, you just have to you have to balance that it's hard to tell a guy like that. Don't play this way but Adams wait we should for resod against Christian McCaffrey, over pursues too much when you take the battling new pursue Sunny Michelle Christian McCaffrey, they're gonNA come back will go so Yeah. They just didn't play the run wellness second atoms right they adjusted and you have to give Michelle credit like I said when you go For, an average of thirteen yards of Kerry and I don't know if he's ever average per carry more than seven in a games and you also have saved in job I am. But they did they didn't play offensively were out of rhythm Waller. We'll talk about that I know atoms writing thoughts. Darren WELLM was non factor when you get a lot of good at the bill Belgium at he talked about. How good daring waller as well. Guess what he must have died because they ran every defense coverage double team run in stem and stopped him. So atom I know you you wrote about this mean, what did you hear the game to her? How they? You know bottle up there wall I thought it was a group effort I. think that's what of expected to hear from the Patriots Bill. Belichick obviously didn't go into detail about what he did. I think it was just a lot of deception what they were doing offensively disguising it and Bella check pointed out. Hey, it wasn't somebody covering him necessarily a lot of zone. We played a lot of you know bracket coverage a lot of. Men under there was a lot of different things. Defensively. On Waller but I think it was more just about the looks of they're giving up the line and never letting the raiders. No. Before the play what kind of coverage is GonNa be on Waller? Want Credit Anybody I. Think mccourty would be the one that you would like added. Say. Devin mccourty that Dinnie. Tremendous job on him but it was a little bit of everybody kind of in the mixer.

"Write. It was like really really crazy but so we've had like kind of like depressing dark red SOx teams but I don't remember having like a crazy I guess the closest Madonna three or four teams which are really fun team. There were there were fun teams de Maher. Law Yeah and then so I play with try seven year when he came to Cleveland and I feel like that team was kind of like took on his personality. We like we were wild and we were young. We were really good but I never I never really played on any any like crazy teams or or even had I've only seen like teammates fight a couple of times. You know what I'm saying like it had it. For. The most part been player would play those pretty good teams for at before we go football I know watching. Me, you're watching everything. has been fantastic. What's I would jump that to you the most what have you enjoyed as a fan? All of it really the lack of tackling crazy guys play preseason. It's been a fucking job at that Kamara addressed out. It's like watching like watching big ten or like college football. It's like these guys can tackle but I mean it's been fun to watch is just up and down. But another thing too is like we talked about this earlier on my pile with Russell Wilson. He's having a great season. He's a great player, but like I'm I'm tired of hearing about he didn't have an MVP all that ship Patrick Mahomes. If he stays on the course, he's going right now is the MVP fucking leagues. This guy's doing fucking jump no look passes like the level. Oh. Like the tally in his play where he's at right now, like I understand rest never got an MVP. Patrick Mahomes is like another fucking. He's on another planet man and Andy would. Ambi reading that offense likes they did the other day Monday night they they. They faked a screen on both ends and do a screen to the tight end. Fake. The screen to the right affect the screen ten eleven at. Night Lights, the level of trickery and the place that they have like amy reading is a genius man. So I don't see them being stopped anytime soon, and I'm tired of hearing about Russell Wilson Fan Pete side. I'm with you. We slept on homes and I'm mad at myself because I like the Ravens on Monday night I watched the first two chiefs game. I didn't like how they looked when I didn't realize it was it was a fucking rope a dope, those decks. And those very. Any. Note no trickery they. They weren't sending their receivers deep because they didn't want probably what those guys to pull their muscles or do whatever. So everything was short. They only unleashed tale a couple of times in that their leg. All right. Let's go. Receivers Hardman you're going flying down hill. You'RE GONNA go. Where did YOU BUBBLE SCREEN Put out all the chicks out. So Mad I was like Oh you do eight. And then. Johnson, but he's a great player. He just doesn't have Andy. Reid. He had I. mean the in May do a good job for what he can do. They run the body you know they try to do whatever they can. But. He needs he needs like a play car Andy Reid or somebody that can design offers like that the product. Especially, if you bet on them if you're waiting for him, it does feel like when they're down fourteen or downtown like Oh over sucks. Back, it's like. They're almost like the rockets like we have our system. Await we have the audible out of this furthest whatever shit would we do it whereas like the chiefs? You know I. I'm Mad. I should've seen it coming. Whatever they can do whatever you need to run the ball. They got the rookie from Lsu now I mean kids. He's running up the clydes obese i. mean they obviously can think. Daughter Ball, all over the yard but man that they're they're on another level and I and I. Think the Ravens are there too and I love Lamar I think they need to they need to figure out a better scheme offensively. This thing running so much scares thing would be. Baltimore. Really was the second best team in the League. And then can't say destroyed them. It's probably a bad sign. For the reason greater air from raiders sue now. Yeah. You know you had some bad luck in that game. You had a couple dumb injuries. You had a bad foam one point. Those a bad fumble with all that said. I. Don't think Gruden totally trust your QB. And you could feel the game like watching that really carefully as a Patriots Fan. Especially on third downs. They were just really careful in a way that did it make sense especially when they're behind now they didn't have never eggs again. But who mobile almost like the same thing like you said a Baltimore like if we down by like a touchdown or even ten points is almost like we don't have anything that can. We don't have any. We have a game plan. I could come back from this because grunwald Let. A car throat Obama more than eight yard that you know what I'm saying like we have. No let's think about nothing. Is dinking done. So we have nothing that can get the ball down to fill in a hurry. So once we get down ten points, get out scores gains over. How is it here in? The first three weeks? Vegas Raiders Vegas Third Down for Vegas. I'm used to it. I got used to like I said long as the raiders. Same colors and you know I'm never gonNA go anywhere. So I'm just I'm I'm excited I can't wait to get to the stadium and like gets it. Hey, you might be a part of like coach and Shit you know I'm I'm so so into it I got upset a huge fan that I just can't wait to be around everything outside of work part of me wonders if they should have said, Nevada raiders instead of Vegas Writers is that a Vegas Battery Sounds Kinda I duNno. Trump won't commit to a peaceful transfer of power if he loses

"Close to two million voters have requested a ballot. When asked about the upcoming election yesterday, President Trump would not say outright that he would commit to a peaceful transfer of power. ABC senior White House correspondent Cecilia Vega says Trump is citing concerns about mail in voting. There are five states where this universal mail in voting that the president is opposed to his already been in place for state's working on adding it for this election, all because of the pandemic and concerns over health, the health of people voting in person, no evidence of widespread voter fraud related to this type of voting, but that is not stopping the president ramping up these attacks as we get closer and closer to Election Day.

"So this this character, Joe Augusta who was the entertainment director at the Tropicana with connections to the Kansas City mob family was. You know if you ask Harry read all bluster and and just claiming that to. To look good in the eyes of his bosses, was it Harry, Reid that they tried to bribe. Am I remembering that story correctly or is that a different a different episode? That's also him? Yeah. Yeah. He was on the Nevada Gaming Commission for about four years and like their enough stories in that four years that you'd think it was two decades Completely different set of guys that we're trying to bribe him but people wanted to get a gaming device approved by the Nevada Gaming Commission and the gaming control. Board to put into a casino, and it was like one of those. Games that Jeff Silver. He's given control board described it to me as like chucky cheese coin pusher where it looks like a bunch of coins, but it's just you know. You're not GONNA win anything. Probably doesn't belong in a casino they wanted to get it passed. So they offered him. Believe it was twelve thousand dollars. In Harry Reid turned around and went to the FBI and participated in an FBI sting operation. where he you know the FBI was on the other side of the wall and he was playing it up and actually got them to hand over the cash, and then the FBI came in and arrested the guys. Now, if I remember that story correctly I, I, I think I laughed pretty hard at that one was that the one where they were in the adjoining room and somebody had locked the door between the two rooms. Yes Harry Reid actually. He realized the FBI was trying to come into the arrest, but the door was locked. So he had to find a way to to casually saunter over and unlocked the door and let them come in. He kept dropping the kept dropping the code word he. That and they get nothing happening. It just wasn't as a signal to send the FBI and. They weren't coming in and then after they finally came in, there's this moment where. He went and tried to rig. Nagai's Knack. Said you son of a bitch tried to bribe me and like if you've ever heard Harry Reid talk just as quiet, very thoughtful guy, answer the picture him in that moment being mad enough to go and try to strangle a guy and scream at him i. It's Absolutely absolutely amazing. Again, just one of a million stories in this podcast that that are just. So incredible Frank Colada I gotTA talk when I. When I started listening to the podcast and I I mean, frank comes out right in the very first part very first episode of the podcast and I thought Oh my God. He actually is your tooling around with Frank Kaleida. First of all, I'm dropping a name that maybe some of my listeners might not be completely familiar with. So fill us in on exactly who Frank Kuwata is frank. Colada is a former associate of the Chicago outfit. Out of Chicago and sort of how the mob is structured is there are made guys is kind of the the term made famous in movies and TV shows, and those guys who have pledged an oath to the mob and. Committed a murder on behalf of the mob usually is how you prove yourself to the mob But then beyond that is this huge network of. Tipsters and associates in people that commit crimes on behalf sort of in conjunction with the mob and frank is one of those guys was an associate of the Chicago outfit In the Mid Twentieth Century, and his a burglar is a specialty in Chicago because he was. Doing these burglaries on mobbed few would give a cut back to the Chicago outfit's and yet a lot of friends in the Chicago outfit's one of them being Tony. SPLO- Tro, pretty famous guy who ended up being the MOMS reputed enforcer in Las Vegas, and that's how we ended up coming out to Las Vegas working with the mom out here. And, and so the experience of spending time with a guy like frank. Colada. I mean I know he offers tours or he did offer tours for a long time where you could connect with him and he would take you around the city and and it all wrapped up with with pizza back at one of his pizza joints But I mean for yourself. This is totally different experience of of getting in a car with this guy and I mean he he took you around Vegas and showed you some pretty. Incredible things. Yeah. And I'll give a spoiler here. So if anyone is about to go listen to the podcast and you don't want US lawyer, skip ahead a minute herself but. He's killed people. I got into a car with him. Knowing that he was a murderer, which is something I never done before. And one of the places that he took me to was. This residential home or this homeless residential neighborhood in Las Vegas where he had committed a murder and he told me how it happened while we were sitting outside of the home. and. That was surreal to say the least. Wow. And I mean some of the other spots he took you to places. He showed you where various burglaries had been committed. Various crimes have been committed and homes and residences belonging to other mob related figures. It's pretty incredible. Yeah. Yeah. It's and it was a weird way for me to being pretty new to. Las Vegas. To learn about the geography of the city because the city that transforms itself every five years seemingly and so you don't see a lot of this history in the buildings or anything like that, and so him driving me around a like added burglaries over there or they're used on a pizza joint and I don't think this made it into the podcast, but it was a pizza joint called the upper crust. Crust and he showed it to me and it. Now, it's a cricket wireless He took me to the spot where a lefty Rosenthal's car blew up and that was like a block from where I do my grocery shopping and I had no idea. So it was crazy to me to to you know learn about this history of Las. Vegas that you can't see anymore just going around on your own. And I mean overall. What was what was the experience? Like of that, I mean I I can't imagine. The as you say, the amount of history and what he's able to show you. But at the same time, you've got it in, you must have it in the back of your head at the same time that this guy. At one time was a was a bad dude. Yeah. I think in the moment, the podcast Romy was like I'm getting good tape like this is. Good stories and I am excited to see what we can do this. And I had obviously researched his story quite a bit before I ever met him. So it's not like any of the things he was telling me came as a surprise, I knew the facts of what he had done. I think sort of the the most surreal thing was hearing it in his own words and sort of I. Mean. These are stories. He's US most told before, and so he's used to telling them. So kind of weird for me where he talks about murder. Like you or I would talk about you know running an air enter taking out the trash Sort of in that space where you know he's just having a conversation with you, but your mind is just going crazy because you're like, oh my gosh, in a car with a murderer..

"I also want to give a big shout out to Jake Gallon the host of the guest list podcast for having me on his podcast to chat. Jake is a vegas local WHO's doing a kick ass job of sharing the stories of the people of Las Vegas, and I was honored to be invited on for a conversation. If, you want to check it out for yourself I'll post a link to the episode in the show notes. All right. Here we go onto the show. Anyone who's ever spent time in Las. Vegas has probably heard someone say Vegas was better when it was run by the mob, but just how accurate is that statements? My guest for this episode decided to find out with his own podcast. Read Redmond is the host of mobbed up the fight for Las Vegas a new eleven part true crime podcast from the Las Vegas Review Journal, produced in partnership with the mob museum. Mobbed up takes a deep dive into the history of organized crime in Las Vegas and tells the story of the rise and fall of the mob with the help of the people who lived it. Read had the chance to talk with law enforcement officials, journalists who covered the stories, lawyers, judges, historians, and even one of the most famous connected guys to grace. The streets of LAS. Vegas former Chicago outfit and hole in the wall gang member Frank Lada. Talked about the inspiration behind mobbed up, having the opportunity to work with the mob on this project when it was like driving around for hours on end with a legit criminal and much much more. Please, enjoy my conversation with read Redmond. I'm pretty new to Vegas here just past a year. And, that is exactly how new I am working newsroom to I've worked for a couple of other podcasts before this. But I moved out to Vegas to join the Las Vegas, Review Journal, and to produce podcasts with them. So he kinda revamped podcasts running before I. got here. We sort of revamped on expanded on now. I. Don't get this wrong, but I, think we out six weekly podcasts. And mobbed up our second narrative project in kind of our our biggest effort to date in that arena But going back to sort of how I got started in podcasting. Think, it's it's one of those things i. Was Kinda by chance there when I was in Undergrad I was studying creative writing and I applied to MFA programs and thought it'd be you know writing poems in some way shape or form professionally. Hopefully. Right? If anyone has ever done that My last semester of college and Undergrad just happened to be podcasting elective that fit my schedule and I took it and I loved it and I was like there's no way. This could be a job. Head after I graduated, I ended up deciding. I. Didn't want to go and do an MFA program poetry and applied for a podcast Gig and then. End Up working in podcasting. So you were saying you came specifically to to Vegas to work for the Review Journal and be there they're podcasting Guru Kinda Guy when you got to Las, Vegas, and I always kind of like to ask this question of the people that that have moved to Vegas. I'm assuming you probably had some preconceived notions about what the city was like, what were some of those those ideas in your head of what life in Las Vegas was going to be like versus maybe a year later, what it's actually like for you. I had not been Vegas as an adult before i. Came, here for my interview, actually I was here when I was maybe four or five years old with my family. So I only memory of Las Vegas was. My brother, and I had one plastic swords at Excalibur and annoyed the heck out of our parents with them. And that was really that was all I knew about Las Vegas and. I applied for this job. I knew I wanted the job I was like is it is it worth moving there will, but it actually be like and. I kinda just tried to come into it with a blank slate and just say, let's let's give it a go and see how it goes and. I've actually I've loved it. I, was so pleasantly surprised moving here and I think that's that's something that a lot of people at move your say other surprised by how much of a local community there is and how great the city is outside of the Strip outside of Fremont street not that I don't enjoy going to the stripper Fremont Street but. Yet. Yeah. It's kind of a surprising year, but something I definitely enjoyed. So what you're saying is you don't live in a hotel. You don't work on the Strip, you're not not. I live at the top of Caesar's. Palace. Actually, I live I live downtown, and it's the cool thing about that is I couldn't afford to live downtown unlike any other US city I, mean, there's probably a few, but I moved here from Chicago and I definitely couldn't afford to live downtown Chicago. So it's it's cool to live downtown here and I'm right next to the Fremont Street experience if I want that But if I don't also right next to you know full under cool restaurants and cafes and all those kinds of things very cool and and you mentioned living. Living in Chicago One of the fun things about jobs like this that that I I know I learned from my time in radio is you get to bounce around and live in a few different places What are some of the other spots in the US that you've you've lived if you always been more so have you ever been out west, it's been all midwest I I grew up in Minnesota, and then I went to college in Chicago at Loyola University..

"Of? Vegas experience and I have to kind of explain what that feels like or looking for a strip, experience and kind of everything else for hotels I mean I'm I tend to prefer the strip At I mean almost all of them. I haven't seen it all of them, but but many of them and I'm a big fan of the area. I'm a big Fan of Caesar's palace. I've never actually stated the Bellagio. Though I've seen the rooms. the big fan of the cosmopolitan but my all time favorite is the the Delano the hotel in behind em. Mandalay Bay there. That's stayed there once on like ninety nine dollar rate, and not really knowing much about the hotel and just blew me away. It's such an awesome room. So. That's one of my favorites and. Favorites off strip as well. I really like the resort down the strip. That's a really cool kind of spot it's it's very much separate from the Strip and downtown. Obviously, so it's kind of a resort unto itself so for people that are looking for kind of a you know. They want kind of a quiet live. Spend all my time at the hotel experience I recommend that place a lot and then kind of commute to the Strip to do everything else. And then downtown a big fan of the D. I think that's my favorite hotel downtown. The is such a cool spot. I had a chance. Last fall we actually We went into town for a night's game, and it was to happen to be right around Halloween and room rates were insane, so we actually stayed with friends in Henderson who live like ten minutes away from the M and after the night's game, we actually on our way back stopped at the for wander around in a drink and a bite to eat. And what a cool spot! And as you say, I mean you're. You're far from the Strip like you're not even strip adjacent year a twenty minute drive from the Strip, but definitely a very very cool spot to to Oh Yeah. It's got a lot to offer lots of good restaurants great pool. And the gambling is pretty decent to. If you are into table games and and other things there's there's some pretty good gambling there, which you can't really say about a lot of other places, and obviously it's you know it's still quite new I wish they would kind of. just just kind of tweak their design. A little bit I. Find that every time I go there. It looks exactly like it did on opening day. I'd like to see them just kind of. Maybe I. Want to say renovate. It doesn't renovation, but just kind of tweaked the design. A little bit updated a little bit. I think really Spruce it up, but yeah. I'm a big fan of the 'em. And Sad, what about you for hotels? Well you know I've only been there twice. and the first time we had an unwritten invaded bally's room. which you mentioned say. Felt like when we got out of the elevator was nineteen seventy six. And and then we stayed at Ti, which was actually a really nice room The only thing I can say is having walked through so many of the hotels the first time I went and trying to get an idea of where I would want to stay. I would say for me the blogs yours is. Above and beyond anything else for me, just a the the feeling of it and then. There's places like the Venetian that just even the win. When you walk in they they just have such a luxurious feel to it. And if you're willing to spend the money, I think those places would be on the top of my list for sure, maybe like Fred, says the IRA the FIDORA Tuck the little bit behind there and it it. It just depends on if you're going by yourself then. I don't think it's really worth If you're going with the guys you know I. Don't think it's really worth spending the money on a nice hotel like that, whereas if you're going as a couple with your wife or your spouse, whatever then you're looking at something like the Vidar those nicer rooms where you'll have the value. The first time we were there was this friend and I so. We didn't care. We just needed to room bed and a shower and a toilet in often. That's all we needed so yeah I think I would like to keep myself centered in the middle of the Strip so that it's easier to navigate if you're gonNA, go south or north, or whatever. If you're going, go the radio. You're still really close and I think the Rio to be one of a High Melissa just because of the poker there. And still the proximity of everything else. That's what I would do I think. Let's talk about My probably my favorite Vegas. This is always the the highlight of my trip report episodes for maybe anyways dining experiences. We talked a little bit earlier. You guys, you're not food. Lovers What are some of your favorite dining experiences? You mentioned the Gordon Ramsay restaurants earlier. Did you do hell's kitchen? There our last trip went for lunch, and it was for me anyways, exactly how I wanted it to be and what my expectations were. Expectation is really high and it. It pretty much met everything the service, the quality of the food, the just the the buzzing there the experience of it. Everything was up to par The food I mean the food. itself was just just amazing. And you're you're paying a little bit more pinger premium for being there, but that's to be expected given that it's a branded place and from a Gordon Ramsay as well you're. You'RE GONNA expect to pay a little bit more for me. The plate up all the places I've been in Vegas that would definitely be the best experience that I had foodwise and Fred what about yourself dining experiences? You have any recommendations or or personal favorites for yourself as well. I definitely have some favorites I'm definitely not the food the in the group I mean. Other than to say that. If you put food in front of me, I will eat it. So I'm not hard to please. My wife however is lakes APPS. She's very much a Foodie, and and also like said a very good cook, so I tend to kind of you know, eat and watch the reaction and hear them comment about it t to judge myself, but Yeah I've been very lucky over the years to join Bob Salinger. The author of the Book and a few others on different dining experiences trying to review restaurants crafts is one that always comes up as one of my favorites. I really enjoyed that. we did SPAGO one year, which was really really cool. I enjoyed that spot as well. I probably would get something different. If I went, but that was a that was a great experience. to treat ourselves Shantelle and I. we stated the area on When was that a couple of years ago? I think six hundred eighteen and it was right after we went after the first time. And we deal. I got there had came with like a you know a hundred dollar dining credit, or just a resort credit, and so we We took that opportunity to go to The French place at the MGM there It's one of the restaurants. It's rated very high in the unofficial guide so I thought well. Let's go check it out. We'll have one hundred dollar head, start and It was while it was. It was very very good, but the quality and the you know. The presentation was so over my head that I couldn't really appreciated. I could. Be Showing. That's that'd be show on. Yeah, so there's. Show has the his main restaurant which is like black-tie, whatever and then there's like this. Kind of attached to the kitchen, is this very casual version of that with a very similar menu, and so we went to the cashable part It was excellent, but like I say it was kind of my head. The you know just like little flowers appearing on the side of your soup, and you don't really know what you're supposed to eat and what you're not supposed to ease and. This guy's got a very very good. In pretty one you're not supposed to which is supposed to use I'm eating with my hands and. So, you're supposed to eat that like okay, how much! Sir! That's Potpourri, that's. What are these chips? As Pope, racer think it's also. We M. On if you WANNA like on a scale like the bottom. Bottom dollar be the cheapest that we age for. Where's the dollar? Twenty five hotdogs at South Point. We've played poker which were amazing. and then up to the hell's kitchen for me, but another place that was like I mentioned before was Ellis Island. For for seventy nine till. So, Fred and I signed up for the we the whole deal. You sign up for this players card. Ya GotTA. Pay For you gotTA. Play ten bucks..

"To to share experience they're trying to. All the CAESARS properties are trying to lure your way from mgm and Vice Versa and so what happens there is that you get this kind of conflict of It's not easy to go between the properties I mean almost everybody that goes to Vegas. Check out. The Strip would You know wants to check out all the hotels they want to go in and out in every hotel. Very easily experience what Vegas has to offer It's not designed in a way to make that easy to do so. So, transportation is one example. I mean if this way, if the Las Vegas Strip was a Disney resort, the monorail would not go down one side of the Strip. It would go right down the middle of the Strip, and it would be very easy to get to each property along the way. biggest doesn't do that and they've. There's reasons for that, so that's one way where I feel like Vegas suffers a little bit as it. It's difficult to get around and it's not really cohesive in the. The way that it's organized. Yeah, you're absolutely right. I mean I have a lot of people that will ask. Is it worth using the mono rail to get around? Las Vegas and the caveat that I always kinda throw in there is it's worth it if you're staying at one of the resorts that actually has a monorail station attached to it I mean I've used the monorail to get around not overly extensively, but a few years ago, I was staying at the Luxor, well attending a convention and Which? Which I mean is obviously one of the dumbest places to stay. If you need to get to the Las Vegas. Convention Center on a regular basis which I needed to, but I was able to take the monorail, I was able to over from the cer- across Tropicana across the MGM Grand. Hop The monorail and and be right there, but again you're right. If it was designed properly, it have been running right up the middle of the Strip as opposed to running on the back side of the e side. It would just connect all the properties, and it would be easy to get around so. Difference, too is that it looks at? If you're at a particular like you say you were at the lecture and you WanNa. Make your way over to the MGM well. It's not going to take you thirty seconds to do that. No. So every it started like built so that they're trying to get you to stay where you are in a sense that worth unless you're GONNA walk down the ship on the same side of the street, which is still not that easy like we went from Treasury. Island Nova to Mirage to make our way to Caesar's and but it took us like twenty minutes to do that. Easily yeah that that's and that's one of the big things, too. Is People always say that? If I had a dime for every time, I heard somebody say Oh, let's just walk to such and such a place. It's just right there. I can tell you right now. Twenty five minutes from now you're GONNA WANNA kill yourself because it's one hundred and fifteen degrees, outside and Y- you are twenty five minutes from now. It's still just right there. I can see it. I can see the fountains of Balazs. They're splashing. Almost there we're almost I could see. We could totally walk to the Rio. It's just right there. Yeah I was working for the guide when the monorail was, was was being licensed, and we were really excited, because we had always very critical of the transportation problems in Vegas and we thought great. This is going to be a way to solve it, and so in typical on unofficial fashioned, we send a team to people into basically time their walk in every direction from every home, every hotel along the Strip to get to the nearest monorail station station, and we couldn't believe the wait times we collected. Those people were coming back, saying yeah, it was thirty eight minutes to get from here to the monorail. We're like now I can't be right. Go do it again. Sure enough. There are definitely spots in. Oh Caesar's palace. Where you're trying to get to the nearest monorail, it takes so yeah. Yeah Yeah. That does it do as I say I. Think accessing anything from the west side of the Strip to do. Monorail is I I will usually just help people using uber or Because It's going to be just as quick of so I mean when you guys go down Las, Vegas. I mean, how often have you? Not necessarily including going down for the unofficial guide, but just on leisure trips I mean. How often do you guys get down to Las Vegas I'm going vote about once a year. I mean obviously now. COVID nineteen is here. It'll be a while before my next trip. I suspect but. I had been going at least once a year for the past. You know fifteen years or so, if being maybe fourteen years and that's about I mean I'd love to go more obviously, but that's kind of my limit I'm also doing other trips for for other reasons so. Said I've been able to bring along for only two trips so far, but we've been. In my mind, I go there all the time. But. Physically I I remember ready that the first trip that we took was when I was starting forty, so that was two years ago a little over two years ago before he three this year, so. So if we like you, said might be awhile before we get the chance to go back, but if I could go like you know financially speaking in, you know given the fact that I'm A. I'm a father of three kids in the married We a little bit harder to get over there. kids are still young so ideally once once every one and a half year or so with us. How often I I would like to go if I could but that's yeah, but the. The me both times that I've been. We try were essentially poker chips with the exception of the first time, which was kind of just to get my bearings in Vegas and look at everything that was there, and then with playing poker as well whereas last time we, we just hammered the bogus. They will almost the entire time. We were there and something else, too. I guess I. I should throw this out there. You guys are both self. You're both Canadian correct. That's correct and eastern Canada which. Presents a little bit of a a a little more difficulty in getting down to Las Vegas I, think people don't for our for the American listeners people I don't think realized quite how big and spread out of Country Canada is if I can go off on. How proud I am of my country for just a few moments here we are the the second largest country in the world. World where spread out so far and wide for myself being in Calgary to get down to to las. Vegas it's a two and a half hour flight. It's relatively quick. It's one flight I can do it for relatively often relatively short and shorter periods of time. You guys coming from eastern Canada, it's. It's a little bit more of a track and more of an adventure, isn't it? It is for sure like our our our flights I. Mean for the American listeners. It's essentially like. I'm in Ottawa, so were were so as Fred. Where parallel to almost New York New York is maybe a little bit more, east. but And but also a little bit more south obviously so. For us I'd say what Freddie if we..

"Host WHO's only had the opportunity to visit Vegas a couple of times, but he's equally as passionate about the city I reached out to the guys to see if. If they'd be interested in coming on my show to talk about their show, and they were more than willing to do, so we chatted about their love for Vegas what inspired them to launch a vegas related podcast. What keeps them going back to Vegas and they shared a few of their own las. Vegas picks tips and tricks. Please enjoy my conversation with Fred and Saab of the unofficial Vegas podcast. Those Eboni our personal stories that we met playing on a baseball team got, but said fifteen years ago or something thousand. And we quickly discovered that we had all kinds of things in common from. Our interest in poker to music. Sports and all this kind of stuff, so we became good friends over the years and then I was really interested in in Seb's addiction to poker so I wanted to kind of pick his brain and learned about the game and you know in in play along with them and try to see if I could take a crack at it so over the last six or seven years. We've been diving into that and. and so I said to him at one point. You know what we got to go to Vegas like I've my my job. Is that I work for a company called train plans dot com, and we cover a bunch of travel destinations in the states, and one of them is Las Vegas, and so I was often going there for work, and so I said we gotta get you out there and play Vegas I play Poker in Vegas, do the real thing, so that's kind of our story, and we found ourselves talking about it so much. We said Hey. Let's respite and put it on a podcast. See what happens. Yeah I. Think he wasn't so much a question of of if we're going to go as a matter of when. And said. How did that I that? First Poker game in In Vegas Go Iowa's. I mean it was amazing i. Just thinking about it still gives me the goosebumps. I mean the first game. Actually. itself wasn't great because we. We were at bally's and we. We didn't know exactly where we were going to go. What we're GONNA do. We hadn't a bit of an idea and and ended up at bally's It was okay you know we be. We didn't do all that well, but it was kind of it kind of gave us a little bit of taste, and then we made our way to Bellagio, which. I mean that took the cake for the entire trip. Even the other trip that we've done I still from e Balaj Yo is the it just has that It has something to it when you're sitting there. He just feels like nothing else and I've been a book rooms before. There is a poker Montreal that we go to, and it's just not I mean the Bellagio has that? You feel like you're in Vegas. It. It feels like you're this, is it? This is where you should be playing poker if you're GONNA. Do it so. The first trip was when what year I would have been probably four years ago that we played poker so. Holly Sixteen that's about it. And then we went again two years ago or last summer, actually went again. I've been going to vegas at least once a year usually once or twice a year since two thousand and eight when I started working for the unofficial to Las Vegas. Never, to play poker, but just to do all of our different research projects that we have to update the book every year, so we'll check out new shows new hotels restaurants everything we cover everything, and we usually do it as a team so and I just absolutely love the place I mean I didn't know if I was going to like it. When I went the first time before that most of my work was in Disney parks, both in Orlando and Anaheim. and so I was looking for doing something different, and then Vegas just just absolutely fell in love with the place I. Just Love It. It's basically it's Disney for for grownups it is. And, you hear that a lot and a part of me thinks that you could. You could also make a case that Disney. Disneyland is Vegas for kids. which way it should swing because I think Vegas Vegas gets a lot of things right that the Disney theme parks don't It's very very hard to get a good value vacation in the Disney. It's become extremely expensive it's very difficult to do on a budget whereas Vegas you can still have an amazing trip in Vegas for dirt, dirt cheap, and so I think ways where vegas kind of sets the bar for American destinations. Approve of that that the trips that we've taken. were fantastic and we didn't break the bank. Like I said the first time we were there, we stayed at bally's and I. Think the room was like. I? Want to save thirty bucks the US, a night at plus a resort fee, but still it's not the. That's the that's the difference you can. You can go to Vegas and spend tons of money. If you want, you WanNa stay at what used to be the mandarin which is wls. Or would no, it's not. It's the other bits right. Or you can go in stay at the circus circus. If you want doesn't matter in, you can make your trip whatever you want and it doesn't matter how much money you have. Cowboys were how little you have. It's Vegas. There's things for everybody that's always kind of been one of the fascinating things and one of the tough questions that that I found as a as a podcast, and as a person that that puts myself out there for questions, and and and such as one of the big questions. Everybody asks us. How much money should I bring and it's a question that really there's no, there's no right or wrong answer to that question. Well, the answer is how much it got you don't. You can basically you can spend as little or as much as you want, and that's. That's the great thing about Vegas I mean it's absolutely true. In fact, one of the things that's list for our podcast is I. wanted to do like a series of podcasts where you create sort of a set of rules for example you have to see show every night. You have to get a meal you have. have to. Do you know at to stay in a certain level of hotel? But how would you structure your trip for like sets? Let's say five different budgets from a seven hundred dollar budget budget all the way up to a ten thousand dollar budget, and to see what you would pick. How would you go through the different decisions to plan out your Vegas trip and it's kind of a fascinating exercise to see. Where you would want to spend that money, but but I was amazed at how you could do it on the cheap end. Mean they really it really is possible to do it's it's you have to get a little more creative? You have two little, no a little bit more about where to find those deals but it can be done can absolutely do it and have a great trip I find. The possibilities are endless especially if you use a tickets for tonight for example. You can just get there so many deals everywhere in so many different things to do. You could go literally go to Vegas thirty times and have thirty different trips it. You could make it so that it feels like you've gone to thirty. Different places were as opposed to when you go to Disney. You're going to Disney that's you're gonna see the same things you're. GonNa see the same park sued same attractions the same rights whereas Vegas just so many different options. That the possibilities are endless. At, a good friend of mine once told me that only suckers pay full price for things in Las Vegas and and I. Don't know if there's a truer statement that quite honestly because you're right. The the the ability to get deals and I'm not saying. Go sit through a time. Share presentation to do it because that's the absolute worst thing that you can possibly do but the ability to get deals really is endless as you say as opposed to a Disney park. Where there's there's no haggling. There's no twenty dollar trick. There's no cops. There's none of that stuff in in in there, so so I think you're right. I think to to do the comparison yeah. Vegas is definitely is one hundred percent is Disneyland for adults and and. and vice versa. You mentioned this is kind of interesting. You mentioned that there are certain things that that Vegas gets right that that Disney gets wrong just as a for a fun little exercise. What would you say the flip side of that? What are the things that Disney does right that? Maybe Vegas gets wrong well the one thing that Disney do really well as they can. Can really control the transportation i. mean the fact that all of the entertainment that you experience in at a Disney resort is controlled by Disney. It means they can really can really manipulate the the entertainment, so the one thing that Vegas really struggles with is that you've got competing properties that don't really want.

"I'm RJ BELL WE ARE STRAIGHT OUT OF VEGAS and I'm Jonas knocks voice of you. The Fan and RJ in the NFL much of the discussion has been the apology from saints. quarterback drew brees earlier today. I thought a lot about this and. Again. Well we try to do is talk about the things others aren't talking about. We try to do it from Vegas Perspective which is. Analytically cost benefit I think we've got something here to talk about Jonas. and. I think it's about the idea of grievance. Grievance, what's the official definition? It's feeling wronged by unfair treatment, so my dad was a union coal miner. He was a troublemaker in the minds. He come in foued grievance right so the Union it was him saying union I don't like this. You know they're not giving me a break. They're not giving me this and then. Treatment wrong by. Okay. Let's think about society? The first question is is it justified the grievance, the sense of being wronged. And does it even madder? So for example, if someone felt like that, the government had out for them, because painted school, crossing signs yellow, and and they're aggrieved by that they have a grievance. A feel wronged by that treatment. I look at them and start backing away reaching for a knife. I wouldn't try to convince him I wouldn't worry about it. They'd have a grievance. They believed that it didn't affect me. Thing most people are like that. But if they're grievance his in this case that used the crazy school crossing guy. If they want to meet a pay for the paint to repaint the signs. I'm probably a little knife. It's a dollar dropped the dollar. Hope a distraction. Keep running. But otherwise if it's a real cost to me now I've got to decide. Wait a minute. You feel grievance. I don't I. Don't think it makes a ton of sense now what? So. Let's extend this analogy. I believe my personal opinion. The drew brees had no intention of. Helping or causing others to feel wronged. I think he was expressing what he truly foul. and. I have no reason to think he has any raise any racism in his heart. You know I, don't Know Ju- breeze. I don't think you can truly know anyone, but I don't have any reason to think so. I think he spoke his heart was, and I don't think he meant to hurt anyone. But people were hurt unequivocally, people felt wronged. They felt like bree said was unfair. Now what breeze did at that point? tells us a lot because now the party that felt aggrieved. A saying we want something from you. In this case, we want you to see that you are wrong. We want an apology. Whatever have you want to describe what they wanted? And briefs looked and said you know something. I don't understand you know if he understood it, he wouldn't have you know if he understood it was offensively star with. It seems like so. He didn't understand it at the time. He listened. He says I. I understand now and he apologized. To me. That's a wonderful thing. I don't know brees now believes it's valid. It doesn't matter I have to I like Jonas I really do. If Jones tells me Rj when you call me. Big Joan said upset and I don't come big. Jones says the hypothetical. It upsets me. I'M NOT GONNA. Sit there and try to debate. I might be curious why, but in the end I'm going to do it because Jones is. He said I'm going to ask you not to call me big Jonas which I never will again body. That's the thing. Would you care what your feelings about the other person when he gets to that point where they want something from you? because. They feel aggrieved. You don't see if you saw you wouldn't hurt. You wouldn't cause them to feel great if you're a good person. At that point, it's you saying. I have not walked in your shoes. I haven't walked in Jonas as I. Don't know why doesn't WanNa be called Big Jonas, but I like you I care about you and that's. It doesn't cost me too much to stop calling you big Jonas so buddy. You got it. To me, that's good because I could say who big Jones to tell me that I'm GonNa call you big big Jonas. And that's what happens. Sometimes. People get told to do something. And they get mad. They're indignant. Why would you even think to tell me the way and then it escalates? What's better as you look at the other person and say I don't understand it. But I respect. Now. Here's the challenge. At a certain point. What's going to be asked is gonNA feel bigger. than. The goodwill with the other. And then that's where you get real problems, so it's important to me I think that we all realize and it can go in either direction it can be political can be whatever is if someone genuinely feels aggrieved or a group and they ask someone else. Please don't make me feel that way. If the person can stop it. We should. But the person who's asking or the group Hey please I feel aggrieved by this gotta understand. Are they're asking something? and. If each party feels like they're right. That's the thing I don't have any greatness hypothetical I don't have any great reason to WanNa call him big Jonas, but if I believed it in my heart, let's think of abortion. antiabortion people believe it in their heart and the pro-abortion people or the women's rights people. They believe in their heart. That's when the battle start and they never stop. Because they can't. Accommodate the other because that then contradicts their core beliefs. and to me I hope we realize that as we ask other people for help that they have core beliefs to if we always keep that in mind. Man, it's going to be so much easier to agree and there will be some things we can't agree on, but only those things will be bad, and unfortunately it feels like we battle politically over everything when we only need a battle over the things that really we disagree on. "Do have a best bet coming up from St Fezzet here in just a couple of moments, it is an NFL related best. Bet Your chance to make some coin on the national. Football League, but first I wanted to get your thoughts on this because I might be the only one who thinks this is a bigger deal than maybe some people are reporting on it, or at least discussing Sean Payton and I don't WanNa make accusations here, so I don't WanNa come on the air and say four certain that Sean. Payton was buckled when he was doing this interview. I have no idea whether he was drinking or. Or not, but he came out pretty strong on several subjects and Sean. Payton was on one, zero, five, seven, the fan in Baltimore, talking about the acquisition of Jameis Winston, signing James Winston and he went on to say that back in twenty fourteen that Lovey Smith, and the bucks took out all their starters, so they could lose week seventeen to the New Orleans saints so that they could end up with the number one pick so that they could draft Jameis Winston now if you go back and look at that game, new, Orleans or Tampa Bay was up twenty two seven. They had a thirteen point lead at the start of the fourth quarter and ended up. Twenty three to twenty. I mean. Call me crazy Fez, but if I'm finding out that a team is trying to throw a game. And I'm a sports better. Wouldn't that Piss you off if you had money on Tampa Bay. It's all about player performance evaluation Jonas. He got to see what you got with some of the backups, and frankly we've been seeing this in the NBA for a decade now so I think there's a big distinction between a team trying to lose versus a team juggling their lineup, and they lose because of it. I know that sounds to be similar, but I think there's a big differential between the. The two well, let me here's my theory as to what actually happened. This is what I think happened because. Sean Payton specifically said Lovey Smith took out all his starters. Here's what I think happened I think. I don't think lovey Smith wanted to do it. First of all I think. Lovey Smith was told by the front office. Take out your starters late in the game at some point so. So that, we can improve our odds of losing that football game and I think lovey. Smith went against everything that he knows about football competition, everything in his core and tank to the game late by taking the starters out, and then a year later got fired by the organization I. Think Lovey Smith was pissed off because he did everything for the organization when against everything inside of him as As far as competition goes, took his starters out of the game thinking I'm helping the organization at least they can help me. And a year later got fired for it, and they turn the keys over to dirt cutter I. Think Lovey Smith was pissed off about that felt like he got wronged and got duped by the organization, and that's why he told Sean Payton the story. That's my theory. Possible but lovey Smith has never been very much of a football coach and Tampa. Bay Did get Winston instead of Marietta show. It worked out better for them G's, and you're taking out. Lovey Smith to finish up the show. Good guy says all right, so speaking of Lovey Smith and Lovey Smith former team, and actually before we get your best bet here says you have a prediction when it comes to the NFL draft, I want you to just throw this out to everybody I'm not even going to respond to it I'm going to let it marinate for everybody's ears, and then we'll get into your best bet, so just go ahead within ten to fifteen years, the NFL will implement a. Lottery where they'll have the ping pong balls like the NBA, and you're not gonNA be guaranteed the number one pick with the worst record so ten to fifteen years. The NFL have a lottery that according to Steve Fez. Fez Best Bet Lovey Smith related his former team. The Chicago bears. What are you got? Chicago bears season when the bears are going to go under eight wins Jonas. The bears are overrated. They went eight eight last year and I. I hear the talk. Hey, foles could be an upgrade over trubisky. Shouldn't the bears win more than eight Games will possibly, but here's the problem Jonas the. The bears won eight games last year, but they really should have only one six. The bears had three fortunate wins because they got to play Detroit's backup. quarterbacks driscoll BLAU and week seventeen. The Vikings didn't play anyone. You talk about emptying the bench, and because of that the bears got three tainted winds on the bears under eight.

"On National Radio Mike God what else you got in the toolbox. Don't answer that all right. A game game number four game number four says five week one lines in the NFL that surprise you. What's game number four? All Right? My Las Vegas Raiders I have to talk about them going to be playing in allegiance. Stadium I drive by it almost every day Jonas their Ad Carolina the Linus, Peckham and I gotTa tell you. I really feel the raiders should be favored. Carolina's already rebuilding. They have a brand new coach and Matt Rule. Brand new quarterback in bridgewater. My feeling is that with Cova and with the Elimination of the OTA's limited practices. This is really going to put new coaches and new quarterbacks up against it, and because of that I favor the raiders. Do you agree Jonas Yeah I? I agree as well, too. I think Carolina's GonNa be overrated. I think it felt like Carolina. was kind of making it up this? This offseason like some of the moves if you're rebuilding, why are you making this move? And then going out and making this move? It's like they got rid of all their their veterans, but then they paid a bunch of money to bring in Teddy Bridgewater. And then they brought in quarterback from the, and it's like Oh, well, Matt Rules Connection with all these guys are great, but that doesn't equal out to success immediately and I think they're in one of the more difficult divisions in the NFL. Carolina's GonNa Struggle this upcoming season. Carolina season win number. Five Asa Las Vegas. Saying here's a team that clearly is going to be rebuilding the team with the lowest season when Jacksonville going to be a long year for the Jaguars at four and a half Jonas all right Steve Fezzet final one your fifth game. Five Games surprise you week one lines in the NFL. What's number? Five Green? Bay at Minnesota and Minnesota is laying three and a half and frankly Jonas. I think that most people and I agree think these teams are pretty close to equal and Minnesota's a really good homefield worth about three and a half so this line would make sense if there were fans but a big part of Minnesota's home field advantages. It's very noisy stadium there i. don't think there's going to be fans more than eighty percent. Chance that they'll. They'll just be token fans or no fans and attendance, and because of that I can't see how Minnesota should be favored by the three and a half. It should be more like two to two and a half. What the reduced home field advantage should be. Do you agree well I would disagree I like Minnesota in this game and I like him big here's. First of all. It's a one PM eastern time kickoff, and we know that favors kirk cousins because of his OCD, secondly Minnesota knows what it's like to kick out fans because they kicked out, Ragnar, their longtime mascot, a few years back, and he hasn't been allowed back in the building all right, so the fact that Minnesota's already setup themselves for understanding what it's like to lose at least one fan and a very. Very valuable fan at that I think Minnesota's accustomed to it. I like Minnesota big in that game. Yeah, Kirk cousins, when the game starting at one o'clock eastern. If you just did nothing but bet on Minnesota you cash two thirds of the time, if the starting time as anything other than one PM eastern the other team, their opponent caches two thirds of the time. Can it be that easy Jonas I know? Now that I picked Greenvale probably win by two touchdowns. So who knows all right.

Let me tell you who else who else his job just got a lot easier, busboys and barbeques because they're no longer going to have to wash glassware because I think everything is going to be in plastic or bottles. I'm serious. The you gotTA. Look out you got to look out for the for the people that are impacted here, no longer having to wash glasses to bend over and rip your backup happened to wash glass. Everything comes on like a plastic Carnival Cup. We come on Fez. This is good news for those guys. Make sense you got. You gotTA remember like we're talking about your background so I never liked paid my dues like you did not. Listen, when near the Radicek et's it's. It's all from all right. So Steve as you actually did some looking ahead when it came to the NFL and you've identified five week one NFL lines that surprise you so i. don't know if you want to start off with your least surprising line of those five or the one that really stunned you, but take away your five lines at surprise you most, and you can use me as your defacto Guinea. Pig whose awful at predicting lines and how lines are GONNA move if you want to set up these week, one games all right so we. We Got Dallas there the favourite there lay in two and a half at the rams to tell you Jonas I understand. The Dallas has a public team with all the weapons they have, and now with wide receiver lamb and the draft, but last year Dallas was awful on the road. They were a bad road team. When they played a decent or good team, they just failed. They failed at New England at Philly. They failed at New Orleans with bridgewater at quarterback, and they failed at Chicago I was really surprised at Dallas came the chock against the rams on the road and so Dallas. Being two and a half point favorite on the road at the rams. I mean not to mention the fact that it's you know the rams opening up that brand new building. The rams finally having their own place to play is is whether or not fans will be allowed in attendance. Is that going? Dictate how this line moves if it moves all I, don't think the fans matter. Because I think half the fans would be cowboy fans Sophie Stadium. What does matter. We actually gave this out rams as best bet on straight. Outta Vegas just last week is the fact that the rams have three of their four preseason games at that stadium? They should know the sight lines very well provided. Those Games are played a straight OUTTA. Vegas here on Fox Sports Radio Steve.

"We will dive into how something you watched. This past weekend has impacted. Today's gambling world. That coming up here in just a couple of minutes from now on Fox Sports Radio but first we've got to get the weather from the Las Vegas Strip and it is appropriate with the announcement that the Venetian is opening things back up on June first standing high top Venetian it is our meteorologists and filling in Steven Pheasant of get the latest from the Strip Steve Every day. We bring the excitement of the Vegas Strip to you. It's seventy five degrees and the NEON is dark. Are you tired of the NEON being dark? Steve I am and I think I can speak for almost everyone June first exciting Venetians can open up and I got to tell you Jonas station that we're going to see the MGM Open Up New York New York in the Balaj and my town is going to start to open back up. Yes rising from the ashes. Now rising from the ashes this past weekend and over the past several weeks has been nineteen nineties basketball. And you're probably thinking is this just like another example of we're just gonNA recap the last dance and just play it lazy because there's no interesting topics in the world of sports. None no no no. No this is how you move the story forward in Sports Talk Radio so St Fezzet in watching thousand nine hundred ninety s basketball over the weekend I was. I never had an issue with defensive games. I never had an issue with games that were in the eighties of the ninety S. I grew up watching. Nfc NFC central football back in the day and that was all about defense. I remember watching a Thanksgiving game in which the bears beat the lions ten to three or ten to six. I was used to that type of offense and lack of offense and it being a defensive game and so I never minded the NBA being like that way back in the day. But when you see those scores that flash up on the screen in big time games scores in the seventies scores in the eighties scores in the nineties. And you look at. Today's game has changed. It does bring up the question. What has the difference done to the handicapping world? As far as people out there trying to get down and bet on basketball. Yeah what N- evolution that's occurred in the NBA generation to generation. You know if you went back actually to the mid one thousand nine hundred eighty s scoring pretty high. You saw the average team getting about one hundred ten points per game by the late nineties and we saw this obviously in the last dance it became a League of defensive specialist seemingly. The pace was slower. Teams were struggling Utah. Jazz only fifty four points in a playoff game and here the numbers. Jonas from ninety six to ninety we saw average scoring for teams below one hundred points and that really continued frankly for the next eight years and it was a league where you didn't have to have any offensive skills to be a good player. Dennis Rodman Avery. Johnson only average eight points in his career Ben Wallace less than six points to Cambay. Matombo that defensive specialist rebounder had a place in that NBA but fast forward generation after the Golden State? The way they played basketball the last two years average scoring per team in the NBA. Over a one hundred eleven points per game. So what have we seen? We've seen that if you if you're a big man and you don't have any offensive skills you can't make three. You can't score. There's no place for any more in the new NBA with faster pace and more efficient scoring. I remember talking to a real estate agents back in two thousand seven ish when when the market crashed and I remember talking to him and so many agents were leaving the business because the market crashed. All of a sudden people could make their payments. Everybody was getting approved for a loan and that was all starting to backfire and the credit cards were coming due and people were leaving homes. There are all these foreclosures and the agents that took the philosophy of adapter die ended up having success because they could work. Foreclosures they could work these other properties that maybe they would never even sniff two years earlier but they realized that game has changed. If you WANNA make it in the business you've got to change along with it at some point win. Did you know that the NBA and betting on the NBA had completely changed from those low scoring games in the ninety s? And you're GONNA have to take a different philosophy and try and figure this thing out or else you were GonNa take the the alternate of adapter die and you were going to fall off and not be able to make a living when it came to the gambling side of this you know. I gotta be honest. I had a couple of rocky. Nba Playoffs back around two thousand twelve. Two thousand thirteen where I looked at all these trends especially in the playoffs where games would tend to go under and they just weren't going under because the league had changed again adapt or die. You need to adjust to the new league and frankly I know professional baseball betters. When baseball scoring exploded that just would not adjust to the new game. Things evolve things change in a better. You have to change with them trends. That were thirty years deep. That had one for thirty years. Jonas became irrelevant because the game changed. Well it's like the I told you the story about the Broncos seahawks super bowl. I was so adamant that Denver was going to win that Super Bowl. That all of my bets before the game were on Denver to win and it was Denver to score first Denver to do this and then while the game was going on. I just assumed because I was so fixated on my original thought before the game that it was going to come back to that like. Don't worry about it. Just stick it out. Be Stubborn and I'm not making this up. I went one in seventeen on my bets in the Super Bowl that year. A one seventeen because I would not go the I was. I was like those NBA betters. Because I could not get it out of my mind that the information my philosophy before the game started was completely wrong and to go in the opposite direction. I was stubborn about it and one in seventeen in that game. Sarah very very difficult to take like all this data. The had all year long about being a good offensive team and it wasn't going to happen on that particular day and it's so important to go ahead and pivot and make adjustment. Yeah it's was awful but I was thinking about this straight Outta Vegas here on Fox Sports Radio Jonas Knox defense in for Rj Bell. I was thinking about this though in watching what was happening back then not just from gambling standpoint but I started to think about all right. So which players could we apply? Today's game and Michael Jordan could play in any era. I think anybody who says differently. As crazy I wondered about Reggie Miller Reggie Miller back then and and Michael Jordan giving the credit to the Pacers and saying they were our most difficult match in the east since the Pistons was really high. Praise at the time because I forgot about how talented how deep that roster for Indiana was Reggie Miller. Fez is a guy that I think would be even better. He's already a hall of Famer. I think he'd be even better had he played in today's Mba. I agree and here's some numbers for you. Jonas back in nineteen ninety eight average three pointers taken by NBA teams per game thirteen. Last year. The average was thirty. Four so think about this. She's that three pointer. Prevalence is almost triple as much in terms of teams embracing the spacing. Reggie Miller would be a beast in today's game the it's crazy the other one. I thought about Karl Malone I. I don't know that Karl Malone would be the player. He wasn't today's game because he wasn't a three point shooter guy who who relied on down on the low block. I wonder if Karl Malone would be a hall of Famer and he's one of the all time great scores in the NBA but based on how much the game has changed. You've seen other players like this White House one guy. Dwight Howard was dominant. He was one of the more dominant centers the dominant center for a while in the NBA. And then once the game started to evolve. The three point shot became more prevalent and all of a sudden big men were standing farther and farther away from the basket. Dwight Howard's game started to suffer. And I wonder if Karl Malone would would suffer the same fate had he played now. Yeah it was a tougher more physical game we saw about the Pistons and how they would rough up Jordan and frankly you needed to have that extra muscle on you like Karl Malone had but that could impact your ability to shoot from the outside and now it's I hate to use the word softer game but certainly not nearly as physical straight. Outta Vegas here on Fox Sports Radio Jonas knocks Steph in for RJ. Bell here on FSR all right coming up next. We have good news. Documentary Steve Fezzet has had all sorts of late years attached to it, and it comes in time in which people are trying to find something to talk about and so every single Sunday for five straight weeks there were different things hanging off the tree that p people could pull from the latest is the quote. Unquote flew game in which Michael Jordan said in the final episodes of the last dance that it actually was a pizza that he ordered, and he had gotten food poisoning from the pizza, and it wasn't exactly the flu game well as it turns out the man who claims to have made the pizza. For Michael Jordan, which was delivered to his room in Utah His name is Greg fight and he appeared on the Ben Maller show. He also appeared on the herd with Colin Cowherd, and he's made on on Fox sports radio, and of these Fox sports radio affiliates, and he's made the rounds in done some interviews, and he is saying that there was nothing done to the pizza. It was not intentionally poisoned because he in fact is a bulls fan. He made the pizza and even joked that he was gonna make sure that it was extra special. Before the pizza was sent out to Michael Jordan, and he didn't even know if it was for sure. Go into Jordan until he found out after the fact, here's why it doesn't matter whether or not. This was intentionally poisoned or not, just because he didn't intentionally poison, the pizza doesn't mean that it wasn't food. Poisoning I've had food poisoning before I had a sub sandwich from a sub sandwich chain. I'm not name names here because I. Don't want to out anybody. But I got food poisoning, and it was awful for about twenty four hours I was vomiting. Vomiting everywhere six, literally sick to my stomach I. Don't think that the guy behind the counter who made the sandwich intentionally tried to poison my food. He baby just had some bad products there so to me this whole well Michael, Jordan's not being honest about the pizza. Look just because the food was poisoned doesn't mean that it happened intentionally. It could have been bad ingredients. It was the end of the night I think it's much to do about nothing and more a more of an indictment on the lack of sports that we have to talk about. About this is even a story in my opinion, says yeah, I agree. Let's face it Jonas one. Do you think was the last pizza? Grant late into Michael, Jordan, and I've said from the START I think a lot of what we saw on this quote. Unquote documentary is an indicator that when you see a documentary, it's not exactly a documentary making a murderer that was cited towards one aspect of it whether it's you know if you want to go all the way back, and you WanNa, go to paradise lost, which was about the murders and Robin, Hood Hills. which which came out on HBO years and years ago. So just because Jordan is saying these things as we're finding out, they're not exactly all one hundred percent truce. "The curtain Jonas. Let's do it. Yeah absolutely and we're going to start Fez with a little bit of breaking news. It's in your backyard. The backyard of this show here on Fox sports radio FEZ IS YOUR CITY. Sin City actually opening up sooner rather than later. Yes we are. I gotTa Tell You Jonas. I am so excited. I've been waiting for this day seemingly for the past six weeks so lost vegas sands news just breaking plans to reopen not just the hotel the Venetian hotel but the casino as well. June first is the day that they're reporting and my town has been ghost out the strip. Jonas Irie to be down there. Nothing but construction workers security homeless and a few brave joggers. It's time to get back to normalcy or as close to it in Vegas. Have you ever Seen Vegas like this? Is it ever as anything ever even approached this with any tragedy to tap and whether it was the mass shooting whether it was you know nine eleven? Is Vegas ever looked like this since your time there? Oh Not at all and Vegas may shut down for sixteen hours but the one thing about Vegas no matter how bad the country was doing. We were largely recession proof when it came to just visitors coming to the town and wanting to gamble and the casinos were open for the casinos to have been closed for two months. I got to tell you. It has impacted my city. I think as much as any city in the country and just the psyche of all of the people. It's our life blood the casinos. Having the mall closed shocking. Look I I do a lot of hits and I'm good friends with the guys at Fox sports. Nine Ninety are wonderful affiliate in Honolulu and they're always having me on rick. Amada John Matthews. The guys are awesome over there and they've told me that their unemployment approached forty percent forty percent unemployment Hawaii because of the tourism in Vegas. It has a Lotta Tourism. And so if it's not a place where you can welcome in visitors. Everybody there's GonNa take a hit so now with the news that comes out that the Venetian is opening up on June first. Says we talked about this? This second somebody jumped onto the dance floor. I everybody else is going to start to look and go okay. I guess it's I guess it's okay for us to all go out there. And when you saw Florida go out. And then when you saw California and Gavin Newsom make the statement or or the leak came out that potentially we were GONNA be shut down in California until after July right after that we talked about it live on the air. Arizona opened up to pro sports a couple of days after that. Now obviously no fans but I think the more that we see other places opening up in particular California who is now going to be open to the idea of pro sports coming back the first week of June. I gotta think that Californians are going to make up maybe a large part of the audience. That may be visiting Vegas in the near weeks. Oh no doubt about it because let's face it. A lot of people still aren't going to want to get on a plane and travel right now but just coming up fifteen four hour drive and the pent up demand. People have been home for so long and the fact that they're governor is new as opening it up somewhat. I think people are going to be absolutely to just get out of their houses and do something so the key is Vegas has to have the guidelines ready and I just read that. There's going to be Venetians. Going to have eight hundred initiatives in cleaning and the like and the gaming areas are apparently going to be at half capacity so three people at a blackjack table let six at the craps table so there will be limitations in terms of how close people will be in proximity. I'm sure hopeful. It's all going to work it now. Here's the thing all right and just so we if we're going to peel back the curtain here as you mentioned To start out the show straight OUTTA VEGAS here on Fox Sports Radio. You often hear on the show. That Fez is a two time super contest winner so back to back years and if you could quickly explain what the super contest and it is in essence the super bowl of NFL gambling correct. Yeah what I liked to compare it to as we all watch the world series of poker. The main event Chris moneymaker wanted. Greg Raymer won it so the equivalent in sports. Betting is the super contest and I was fortunate enough to win the main event of sports betting in two thousand and eight and then again two thousand nine okay in other words you kicked its ass two years in a row. We got so. Fed is really good at the sports gambling. Stuff we got it. Everybody's clear on that. I had no idea until we were discussing before the show what the casinos are going to look like if you missed it. We opened up the show with it. June first the Venetian is going to be opening. Backup in Las Vegas. I think it's huge and it could could have an impact not only on that city but another sign that the country is opening up. I didn't know this. The you also know your poker's while to Fez and the world series of poker which is the poker event of all poker events across the country extremely popular popular event. Where did you finish in the world series of poker well? I had a twentieth place finish in a six handed event. Now keep in mind Jonas. There's about a hundred events. Each summer there were there were but there was. I think like three thousand people and I have cast three time. So I'm I'm an avid poker player there so you finished twentieth in the World Series of poker. It's not just that you're an avid poker player. You're a really good poker player but you identified the fact that there's going to be limitations. With how many bodies can be at different tables in Las Vegas and you said that this could have an impact when it comes to poker. Moving forward yet does not look good for poker in the short term. And here's why Jonas anyone who's played poker knows a lot of people like to play poker because of the social aspect of it and also poker works well with seven eight nine people at a table while the current guidelines and the restriction say maximum of four players per poker table every poker game. I've ever played in when we get down to five players. The game winds up breaking up. People don't WanNa play so I think the one area one of the last areas to come back in the casino is going to be the poker rooms. I can't see how they're going to be successful. Only four players and the world series of poker and all. The events got rescheduled to the fall. Got Canceled this summer. I don't know if they're going to be able to pull it off this year. Yeah so it'll be interesting to watch but as we mentioned the Venetian opening backup June first. That story broke a short time before we went on the air. Here on straight Outta Vegas here on Fox Sports Radio. We also have another mystery. We were going to dive into in the world of sports..

"Is usually on a Friday night city Las Vegas absolutely hopping jammed. Wall-to-wall people on the Strip. I Hate Las Vegas on a Friday night for that reason. It's just jammed but look at this this photo. It looks like was taken from one of the pedestrian bridge between MGM. Grand and New York New York going across Las Vegas Boulevard. Looking north can see the the Waldorf Astoria New York New York cosmopolitan off in the distance. They're looking at how few people there are. Now look at this. This is one of the. This is a photo of that. Actual pedestrian crossover. If you've ever been on that crossover on a Friday night you know how crazy that crossover is as I say. I Hate Vegas on a Friday night just for that exact reason because of the people. There's nobody there there is nobody there. It's just insane. I can't get over that so I guess the next question and this is a question that I ask myself is. How is this affecting me personally? Well if I had my way I would be in my hotel and planet Hollywood right now probably at about this time my wife and I would be figuring out maybe a show that we wanna go to or maybe find a place to go have a couple of drinks or maybe a late dinner or something like that. We actually had plans to go down to Vegas here this week. We were supposed to be on a plane earlier today. Flying down there with the intention of flying home on Wednesday. We were going down to see some friends we were. GonNa go take into. Monday's dark We were GONNA go see our friend. Lisa perform at the Mayfair Supper Club at the Bellagio which had just opened on New Year's Eve. We were GONNA do all of that stuff. We still had plans. We were still. We were kind of playing it by ear up until I think Friday was when we really kind of said you know what this is it. I don't know if I've ever mentioned it in any of the podcast episodes or anything in the past but my wife actually works in the healthcare industry and she was told last week that they need to cut down on all unnecessary international travel so she actually talked to her manager about whether or not he should be going in her manager said. Yeah you know what you you can go but when you come home you should probably phone the occupational health and safety people and have a discussion with them about whether or not you should go back to work which basically meant in our minds in no uncertain terms that she was probably going to end up quarantined and if she ended up quarantined that I was probably going to end up being quarantined and that was not going to work for us so we made the decision to dial back and have a little station this week. So that's what we're doing. We did find out that the Mondays dark show we were GONNA go see on Monday is going to be streaming online so we will make a date night of it in the in the bonus room tomorrow night we'll Fire it up on the big screen. We'll will watch watch Mondays dark just like we were there. The hardest part of all of this as I've said is knowing that I can't help my friends. That's the hardest part. That's the toll. This is taking on me. I you know city Las Vegas is going to be there if it's two months six months eight months before I can go back again so be it. The city will be there. When I get back and I'll be able to go back. I'll be able to see my friends and we'll all have a story about how we how we spent the the great pandemic of twenty twenty. That's the easy part again. The hard part of all of this is not being able to help my friends. That's the tough part about this. So I guess the question then becomes what can we do? How can we keep ourselves healthy?.
