"Maybe he doesn't want to but you the fact that he is the fact they were able to work some now and he'll still be a presence in representing vegas and the goal knights. I think it's a good thing for for hockey in the city as a whole yet definitely and i'm going to ask you if you have a favorite i guess derek england story to share and before you do. I can share mine that i think of a shared this on the day he retired but one of my favorite stories ever wrote that involved. Eric england was the beginning of last season. We knew the nights we're going to have some. You know young people coming up on the blue line. So i asked all the veteran defencemen kind of what are you. Remember about your debut your first year. What advice would you have for an up and coming guy and Derek england talked about his debut whereas i've mentioned earlier he was twenty seven. I mean he went through so so many games in the minors to kind of get to a point where someone would give him an initial opportunity including of course famously playing for the las vegas ramblers for parts of two seasons. I believe and he finally gets called up. He's twenty-seven a alex kawaguchi who is a former gopher by the way to tie it all back to college. Hockey is six. So the pittsburgh penguins need derek england to come up and phyllis spot on the blue line and right before puck drop. Alex like never mind. I'm better and derek Doesn't get to make his long-awaited nhl debut until the penguins are nice and let him in the next game and that game one of the penguins defenseman gets hurt so all of a sudden dirk england goes from being a guy who would wait so long for a shot to being part of a five-man blue line and i think he played like nineteen minutes in his first. Nhl game in front. Of course marc andre. Fleury and i believe florida shutout that game so never forget that story. Just kind of how. I mean crazy. That must've been for. Derek england who worked so hard to get up through the minors then finally. It looks like he's going to get shot only for the guy. He's supposed to replace throwing up his hand building Don't worry i'm good. And be forced to have his dream deferred just that little bit more a david stories or moments that stick out to you when it comes to derrick one our at so seth rohrbach from from pittsburgh put out a picture of derek england like when he got called up and a black eye looked like he had been like a war or whatever the day you know couple of days before he was like the most quintessential derek england picture. Did you have an issue that it was perfect. Oh i did not i. It's like he was so dirty on. It was so great like the that he retires. I was circulating and yet it's totally encapsulated him. But i think you know it's always funny to me. You know from the media side of things. Because derek england just loathe talking to the media and it wasn't anything personal against he just sees hated talking to the media so it was always funny like every time to like seem come out he just be like oh you know kinda like yeah you know. I'll be quick you know. I always thought that was funny in in whatever..

"Trade max patch already seven million dollar salary cap hit to get salary cap compliant as we've talked about so you know it'll probably be these types of moves those like you said paper transactions that get them under and i the one question i had. I wasn't wasn't able to ask him a criminal. I would have liked to is what his thought is on the taxi. Squad in terms of the salary cap. Does it help them. Does it hinder what they need to do it. You know. allow them a little. Bit more flexibility. I guess to to get under the cap without having to make a lot of moves or or maybe it's just a complete wash and maybe it's the exact same thing is sending a guy down to the h. l. So it would've been nice to hear his perspective. Maybe at some point we will hear it. Y yeah i think it's almost you know. In a way sort of the the age a waiver wire two point. Oh i guess you could say yeah and make it clear for why this is kind of i. Guess an interesting deal for how it affects. The nights is how the salary cap works is that it's technically counted every day and so every day the nights kind of stay under it they get kind of a small amount of savings and how it worked last year that small amount of savings to build up by all these kind of paper transactions of setting guys up and down from the h. l. Allow them to have more cap space at the trade deadline. And that's what help them acquire guys like alec martinez and Really the big one. robin lehner. And so you would anticipate because the knights obviously have super high expectations for the season again. They're going to do that. A bunch try to get as much space as they can by the trade deadline. So that if there's something they think they need to pencil gear up for a stanley cup. Run because this division with the blue the avalanche is not going to be the easiest one to get out of that. They're able to make that kind of move. We'll see how that goes moving forward one last thing. I want to talk about because this was huge. News that happened last week is dirk england. Golden knights defenseman announced his retirement as a player after six hundred and seventy one. Nhl games as i mentioned earlier in the show. He's going to remain with the organization as a special assistant to the owner owner. Bill foley for the vegas golden knights foundation. England meant so much to this franchise. He had his. We are vegas strong speech. At the first ever night's home game he got to lift the clarence s campbell. After the knights defeated the winnipeg jets in two twenty eighteen western conference final. A heated ton of work around the community. And i don't think you can kind of overstate. How much of a pillar. He was for this franchise. I also feel like you know just from an honest perspective. I feel like this kind of happens to a lot of guys that get towards the end of their careers. We focus so much on whether they're contributing to the team right now..

"For for this season and in the future of just you know rivalries and excitement and and different things that we could talk about different flash points different talking points a again. I'm i'm curious to see if this a format that the players in the league and the fans really like gravitate toward and then if going forward when we're able to get back to quote unquote normal by you know. Twenty one twenty two season is gary bettman said that they're hopeful for if maybe they do this in the schedule and there are a little bit more of these blocks and into game kinda sat so i guess you could say to to reduce some of the travel in maybe increase some of the rivalries. Yeah i think. We're both very intrigued. And kind of hopeful about how this is gonna work just because it's like we both kind of have that college hockey fan background but one thing. I'm interested to get your thoughts on to play devil's advocate a little bit as it struck me the other day like constantly right now to get ready for the season as i'm sure you're doing. I'm reading a ton of stuff just nationally about the nhl in different teams and different team previews and let me refresh. What happened with this group in the off season. Are they be better. Are they going to be worse. How are they going to fit in this division. Yada yada yada. What struck me about a lot of those is that it will have absolutely zero bearing most likely on what happens to the knights this season. Like for example. I've been reading a lot about the chicago blackhawks recently because they've had a ton of injuries including to curb doc who's one of their you know. Top prospects was their second line center in the series against the knights This past postseason. And he's going to be out for the entire year. And how does that affect them and it struck me. That was like well in relation to the knights..

"Number one seed coming out its vision or the division title obviously saint louis gonna be right there but dad that stretch especially that against colorado i think is is going to be key and then the end to you know ending with With st louis those games at the end there that that can be fun. Especially if there's a any sort rivalry that builds up in the games before that with alex Facing his former team. Yeah it's going to be truly wild can go through all the implications of the schedule setup. So people done the math. Basically the nights are gonna play each team in their division eight times as dave mentioned. There's one stretch where they're going to get half those games against colorado down in a row and they're going to play each team essentially two times in a row. There's no one else for lack of a better word where they're gonna play say the avalanche one night and then immediately play the blues their next game. Whatever it's at least. Two games in a row against each team as dave said that can grow up to like four games in a row against the avalanche so something. We were talking about Yesterday dave that. I find interesting about all this. Is that you kind of mention. It's kinda like a hockey series. Which both of us may be uniquely among hardcore hockey. People a grew up really loving college hockey. Like i went to university of minnesota games as a child more often than i went to minnesota wild games and that was something. I really liked the kid knowing. Like all right. Cool like we get duluth this weekend like hate duluth weekend or to attack your alma. Mater like hate wisconsin. Weekend or whatever. And i am curious how that's gonna play in the nhl and with that. I'm curious how the players are gonna like it because what this does in terms of playing each team at least twice in a row and only playing within your division is even though minnesota in saint louis have kind of been shoehorned into this quote unquote west division. The knights travel is just down a ton compared to an average season. I was doing the math yesterday. And i'll write a story on this at some point during training camp but the nights travel schedule this year. Essentially it's gonna average out to about one hundred twenty seven miles per day and that's basically half of what they average the last time. They did a full season in two thousand eighteen. Nineteen each time. They take a trip. They're going to go. Approximately one hundred forty four fewer miles compared to a trip that they took in their last full season and their traveling about once every five point. Four days this season compared to one Once per every three point three days in that twenty eighteen nineteen season. So i'm really curious to how a lot of this is going to end up affecting how things shake out. 'cause you kinda imagine the rivalry aspect of like wnyc growing animosity between these teams would get these college hockey like series and then also. I'm curious what i guess..

A lot of these kind of a plans had been long rumored and we've discussed a bunch of them but now that it's official gonna go through once again. Our also of course going to talk about kind of the knights training camp preview because they are training camp only in like four to five days. Dave they start on sunday and we're recording this on wednesday which is just nuts. And of course we have to talk about. Theodore scores late, Golden Knights beat Flames 5-3

"The Vegas golden knights B. the flames five three yesterday in Calgary knights head coach Peter more like the way his team played even though they let the flames get back in the game after getting out to a three nothing lead I thought we played really well and I thought they were opportunistic on their chances and you know we could have put him away earlier but we didn't panic and we handled the I thought the the way the game went in the third period there was a lot of composure pushback gonna gonna go right away the golden knights scored twice in fifty three seconds in the third period to ensure the win Vegas plays in Edmonton tonight the puck drops at

"I mean. He keeps getting hurt right. He got hurt twice first year. The hurt last year. I thought this year. We're having this kind of flukey. I mean I kind of fell on him. I mean we don't know a hundred percent. That's what happened but it sure looked like it in that Arizona. Game that you know he got kind of Merrill I think it was smaltz that got knocked into him and his leg was kind of exposed a little bit awkward position and you know he looked like he kinda tried to fight through it and then when they scored like ten seconds later you can kind of see Sudan not really getting across the creek like I mean. I don't know that he was going to stop it anyway. But anyway point mean being. That's different than say if he'd like exploded across the crease in hurt his growing hamstring. Or something like that but I mean it just always seems to be something with him right. I was like he likes something with his finger. Whatever you know this guy falls on him I mean yeah? It's bad luck but you know it's kind of hard to say he's not right he just hasn't been available at all the Times. You want your backup goaltender available for I. I mean it's such a cliche in hockey and other sports. The best avail or the best ability is availability. But it's really true. I tried so hard. But if you know you're the Golden Knights and you WanNa play your backup to get more contracts some rest you need your backup to be available because I think we saw an obviously dave had a spectacular rant about this the other day like they are gun shy with Oscar dance and a little bit with Garrett sparks. It feels like right now like they do not trust those guys. There seem to have a great plan Dan of how to utilize those guys to the best of their ability. They I think want Malcolm Subban to be their backup and I think they're kind of stated goal entering the season because we want to play him more. It's not only see what we haven't him but to give Marc Andre Fleury more rest I mean Bruce Cassidy talked about it with ESPN and they were just like that's something they've focused on so so much with to harass as he's aged is it's not fair to him or us to have in place sixty sixty five games anymore. We think he's best when he gets rest. And you saw that in a place last year. 'cause to Karadzic was unbelievable and helping the bruins get to the Stanley Cup final. Now they're backup. Backup is a little bit better. I think than Malcolm Superman. But if that's something that the Bruins are focusing on with an older goaltender into Rask that's something that I should probably be focused onto and they haven't been able to really focus on that so far because they haven't trusted the backups. Because Malcolm soon has been in there and now flurries played twelve thirteen games. So you mentioned jared sparks. He's gone Nikola Gone Gone Jake. Mitch I've gone for now. We'll see what develops with this roster but is this a I guess not fair to say it's an indication that they're kind of holding off on the youth movement but right now. A lot of the rookies are gone. I rotate Tate's temporarily when you look like Chicago schedule Chicago Bulls. They play Tuesday Wednesday or according to his and they play in Tucson so pretty easy flight not too far. You know you can squeeze a couple more games out of them. You can take advantage of the fact that nights have three days off basically before the Halloween Extravaganza against the against Montreal. Can't wait to see the costumes. Were you wearing the costume of the game. I thought I might have to do something I can probably. I just put on a Hoodie and my jacket and go is Leonard Hoffstetter. I could probably I pull that off. Do People know people know. It's fraught what that's from the top rated show whatever right like nobody watches television anymore. I remember like a while ago. The he's the sprint guy. Now used to be the verizon guy. 'cause I kinda Kinda I don't know he's probably better than I but I almost pulled off the right guy for the close good stuff Ben. Are you wearing costumes on Thursday. I got my costuming out of the way already My lovely girlfriend and I went as a two characters from Quentin Tarantino's once upon a time in Hollywood. Those we'll thank you. I I tried real hard. You know instead of where Hawaiian Wyan shirt and try to act like Brad Pitt. Which I try to do and most of my life anyway successfully? We saw Erica last year. Terrify us with that lion Causing that we've we've shown on video here at the RJ and it's horrifying this year. He went ten men which was a fairly impressive. I just actually saw in the last Couple of hours will Carlson and his Lovely girlfriend post their photos as a joker and Harley Quinn which was pretty intense switch they were mishmashing. DC movies. I have to point out. She was suicide squad Harley Quinn and he was heath ledgers the Dark Knight Joker not the suicide squad joker. So I'm just saying this is the kind of hard core nerd That I will call out when I see it just like you. You can transition into the game before when Ryan Reeves called the video game. He likes to play Duck Connor. No No it's Duck Hunt Ryan. Everyone who's ever held a gun to a TV knows. How's that okay first of all? Did you really do that. You cheater. I didn't okay. You didn't do it making sure I had a really crummy gun. I had to get real close lows that don't make not on the screen but I gotta get close right now. How `Bout did you use the power pad? Did you get off and use your hands to do it. It's no did you actually run now. I actually ran without. Okay now. Ben I think Ben might be a little too young for the power pad. Did you ever have that now. I was at a friend's house. Okay the power pad was amazing like you can play track and field track and field with those great but the problem with the pad would like much up so it wasn't it didn't if if you try to go too fast you would not really work as well as it should so I mean that's that's why I kind of went out pretty quickly. Yeah so Ryan. Riess did call Dot Connor. I I wasn't very happy. Happy with that but We'll have to deal with that down the road at some other point That was after the ducks win. which followed the Colorado loss Two very big extremes now you can also point out listen. It was a bad spot that the ducks were in they had just played in Colorado the night before at altitude and then played an early game here in Vegas the the next day but still they went out and had to do the jumped on him. Early answered the early goal bounceback with three and just kind of took it to them from there there after getting trout by Colorado. So I guess. How would you evaluate this week of complete extremes? Yeah it's fascinating. I just think the nights obviously without Schmidt are still kind of figuring out who they are what they're gonNA do. I mean we know the top six is going to be really good. Did I mean once again I mean stazzone stone and Patty were just ridiculous against the ducks in terms of their possession. Numbers off the charts. We're good Marc. Andre Fleury's outstanding to start the season and then we've already talked about. The Blue Line is kind of been a little bit of an adventure. But they've been banking talking points. I mean they're eight and five. Sixteen points is definitely not bad and the fact that they've survived this well without Schmidt compared to how they did last year. I think positive for them as David. They've kind of been out worked out Class A little bit so far with some of the teams are kind of upper echelon of the NHL but once they get healthy they'll have a chance to kind of take on those teams again and see how they do for now. I think they're getting by and they're getting by pretty well. So so my biggest takeaway was how Colorado is especially if Colorado gets goaltending. That's a really good team when healthy they didn't even have random not have written into not gonNa have landis absolutely like I mean they just dismissed that was systematic like okay. Yeah we'll let you in the game and then we're going to score late in that first period we're gonNA come out in the second period and just basically step on you and make you question yourself because there was a lot of questioning themselves in nights locker room after that Colorado. I think a lot of that just had to do with. How Good Colorado is after thirteen game that it's funny the other day yesterday today I was watching the NHL Network and they do a lot to talk about the maple leafs and it's very interesting to hear the narrative right now around a team like the maple leafs and there's a lot of questions about effort in playing for themselves versus playing for the team and there's been some some moments where some guys guys have taken some hits and there hasn't been somebody to step in and and it's a little old school thinking but there's some people questioning that team and I don't have any questions like that about the nights? A lot of my questions are just they just. It feels like they just know they're good. It feels like they they. They had some games where they felt like their talent was gonna get them through it. That this team's plucky and they're playing in good tonight but we know we're good it'll eventually take over and it didn't in in a couple of games and they got like Nashville they got swallowed up that game. Nashville's a really good team. And I think part of that was the nights realized you know okay. We can't necessarily just get into a back and forth. We're good by. Maybe this team is a little better equipped for that style. Who are we? What do we have to do? Sometimes you gotta get smacked in the mouth a little bit you have to take a six is one loss to go K. We can't play like that. You know you have to take a five two loss at home to Nashville. You have to get you know. I think the Philly Games seems a little bit of an aberration because no offense. I'm putting that game a lot on Oscar dance but a lot of that was them just not playing well and probably thinking affiliates not playing. Well you know we're called and you can't just think you're cool in the NHL because before long you end up in a spot in a hole where you can't dig.

Predators Sign Captain Roman Josi to Eight-Year Contract

"It's ESPN and ice but yes for ESPN talks about hockey I'm grateful NHL Writer I'm Emily Kaplan National Nhl reporter indeed you are so today the big finally get some actual hockey news talk about other than like injuries and stuff the Nashville predators call the press conference today like everybody be at the arena like eleven thirty 'cause we got a lot of things to talk about Oh what could it be could it be everybody knew immediately was the Roman you'll see extension eight years the Max nine point zero five nine for number fifty nine on the for this contract making Roman Yo see the third highest paid defensemen via the CAP heading into next season behind only Eric Carlson Andrew he is twenty nine currently will be turning thirty on June first of next year so emily we think of this contract firstly after talk about this trend this is the NHL trend. I feel of the last eighteen months when you sign a new contract it has to have some owed to your Jersey number in it and it's just ridiculous to me it's too cutesy it doesn't make any sense I don't know if the players leaving money on the table I'm not the team is like besides looking cute and a press release what is the purpose I will say this as well kind of a beat trend when you consider that Wayne Gretzky's numbers retired or all around the league and no one can ninety nine ninety nine it'd be the number I would use if you're going to pull the contract mullarkey that's for sure but I look I think that Roman Yosi over the last couple of years I've been one of the most consistent and best defencemen in the League he's a guy that we should be talking about enormous conversations probably over the next two to three years that's what level is at the most shocking part about it to me is the no movement clause because that is something that David Poile infamously does not give out here and Piranha or the only guys on the roster who have it and you mentioned his age he's about to turn thirty of this brings him to what thirty nine years old we're at a time where hey the blackhawks are playing the predators tonight on Tuesday recording this and we're talking about thirty four year old Brent seabrook halfway through his contract with a new movement clause that is looking pretty bad and getting scrapped for the second straight day and I don't think that Romeo who's on that same exact trajectory but we see why these things do become troublesome down the road right so doughty's contract was thirteen point eight four percent of the cap when he signed it trying to or Carlson's contract when he signed his this past summer accounted for fourteen point four seven percent of the cap and then Romeo Issues contract is eleven point one you percent of the cavs so greg numbers you get the sense that that's often couch come on what am I I always I always I was wave past math in high school I went in the back of the book copy down every a answer every lake odd-numbered question had the answer and then just a bunch of nonsense on top of it and hope that was right and if I was right like my goal was like a seventy five just get me through it did what I could so get degrees get the feeling that this this salary this is for the contract probably settles in around this much it's down from where the Romans camp was looking for they wanna like nine five it probably settles in around here because partially because of the trade protection that's that's a hell of a caveat from Poi- like you said and and because of it you know this this number on the open market is over ten I think for a defense of his of his vision Ilk we've been talking a lot about Albatross lately insofar as him being a Ufa and you know these kinds of guys don't become available when you look at a team like for apple like the Vegas Golden Knights like we've talked about for the things Golden Knights are loaded up front they've got a goalie they don't have a foundational defensive another Blue Line there's don't Roman he's one expert says one both these guys could have been available summer now one of them's off the market and you've got to pay for that so yes the term is frightening because like you said Brent seabrook cautionary tale right absolutely frightening term on this I will note that according to cap friendly the the contract is structured with all a bunch of signing bonus money in the first four years so all the way until twenty four when he'll be turning like thirty four right so that's just a little note little caveat no signing bonus money for the last four years and you know just there are ways to get around things but for the moment eight years over nine million dollars for one of the best defense in the League and the predators obviously if you look at the ages on that oster the next four years of very important

"The goaltending i think they got they got every ounce that they could out of those guys last year and they lost their backup curtis mcelhinney right and so oh you know if i would nedal kovic i can't pronounce. I'm sorry <hes> you know he was really good. He won't call you up and things like that. You know with their with their minor league team but that's my big question mark and that's why them out yeah and just be clear like usually n._h._l. Teams average about six teams <hes> changeover from year to year in the playoffs so we've got to put someone out in south carolina. You're one of those teams make such blackhawks thirty six thirty four in twelve last season which got coach joel quenneville a three time stanley cup winning coach fired they added vezina trophy finalist robin lehner on one year deal the backup corey crawford who is of course battled injuries last couple years <hes> and they need to help out a defense offense that was second worst in the n._h._l. Season also old friend ryan carpenter now in the mix there <hes> dave have they done enough though to climb in what i think will be the deepest division in hockey the central. I'm going to put them in. I have them into and i really feel good about yeah yeah so whatsoever and so on. There's gonna be a team that i have out the that's. Maybe a little surprise later on <hes>. I love the leonard pickup. I think it's fantastic us a great pickup and at one year two that's it's a great deal yeah and and i just think the strom pick-up last year too if you look the second half of the season for them they were playing well. They were a bad team starting off and and they at least got over. I guess what quote unquote five hundred at thirty six thirty four and twelve we can argue that but there are team. I think can can make one final run with taves kane and in a couple of other guys so we have men but we don't feel good about it. Colorado avalanche next thirty eight thirty and fourteen last season. They won a round in the playoffs against the calgary flames. Then lost to the san. Jose sharks one of the clear winners of the off season. I have them is one of three teams. I thought hit a home run this off season. They brought back car one of the best prospects and hockey on their blue line so they traded one of their best defenseman for second line center in qadri also had a good depth in donskoy andrei broke husky and old friend peer edward belmar but dave my question to you is should we be excited about this year's avalanche team or future avalanche teams because they're set up well for the future. Maybe it's not not their time right now. So i'll give a weird answer..

"Fifth. They're going to be over the national getting those that started last year. They were here. The bunch of teams came in from the division. You had a tournament going on at city national. It was crazy. It was just raucous atmosphere every night and plus. One of those top rookies got traded game. That's true so we don't know if we're gonna see anything like that again again. <hes> but what are we what are the main things we're looking for here with this rookie camp and the rookie showcase that are coming up that will be down in anaheim or in the orange county. I guess you'd say yes. Technically it's irvine yeah my former hometown. Oh boy fine yeah coming for you might stop by the old stomping grounds a little bit but <hes> i think the main thing everybody is gonna be watching from the roof camper kind of the name guys you know the cody glass the nikkei if he signed nine jimmy schuldt <hes> zach white cloud kind of the guys that you expect. They're gonna get an invite to the main camp and you know compete for a job. Those are the guys you we wanna see kind of jump out really stand out now rookie tournament you know last year we look back that was kind of the coming out party for eric brannstrom. Where everybody kinda was like yeah well he. He was clearly you know if not the best player in that entire tournament one of <hes> so you're kind of looking for somebody like that you know somebody that's gonna really jump out and then then maybe carry it over the next week in into that main camp yeah. It'll be really interesting to see how some of these guys have developed over the past year. I mean you've got cody glass. Who moved up a level at the end of last season got to the a._h._l. Help the chicago wolves reached the calder cup final played really well in the past will also being on both special teams. You know taking draws all that stuff so it'll be interesting to see how he translates that over to the camp level this time and obviously all those blue guys are guys that could compete for a spot on the opening night roster so it'd be really interesting to see obviously i would think nick haig is kinda guy to watch. I mean he's twenty. He's improved defensively. It seemed a lot last season in the h. L. he's still got a lot of offensive potential and a debut now. We're talking about the sure that he's just got a different body type than anything. They've got on the blue line now. He's being six with his kind of. I guess edge tomb. He's got a little bit of a nasty streak. He'll play six six. He's got that reach. You know we've all whenever we've talked about him and when we talk to him in the summer for for the podcast you know we talked about skating and that's always going to be the big question mark with him in if that gets to n._h._l. Level lookout because you don't find too many six six packages like that around the n._h._l. Called perico <hes> portray angelo say it's really intriguing just because of who's the stanley cup champions and how they've just got a mess of arms and legs on their blue line with six perico six three portray angelo they had six four boehm eastern edmonson and so that's obviously an interesting prototype for hegde follow sure and if you were going to buy into stuff like you know n._h._l. Network top twenty lists and there wasn't a nights defenseman on their you know a guy like nick hague in a couple of years is the type of guy who can show up on that list. He's the type of guy guy that you know can can contribute power play put up points you defensive factor you know be a big strong body in front of the net and all those sorts of things. He's got got you know an upside. That's different than all the other guys you know all that being said. I don't think it's fair to discount some of these other guys coming into camp..

"New sign up bonus up to fifty dollars so thanks to nick. Hey i sit down with us for a few minutes appreciate that. They've i know you. Are you know you've you've been very high nicotine for while a lot of people have on ice but also breath as we heard there off the icy think he's going to be a valuable asset to the organization yeah he just. There's something different about certain guys when you talk to them just you you know kind of their presence. <hes> charisma you know. I don't know what the right word is with him but it's just different. It's it's unique. It's you know i don't know if it's being a taller guy that he just kind of commands a room and and things he's used to having people kind of focused on <unk> attention. He's just so comfortable in his own skin and i think in his career going foreword. That's you know it's gonna be valuable asset for him. Whether it's something in leadership just you know kind of that own self awareness or his career what you have to work on you know confidence. It's things like that. I it just a personality like that is kind of what you're looking for. It's very even keeled. It doesn't waver lot you know as as he goes on in his career career guys will tend to gravitate toward him and and and just kind of you know he'll he'll set the tone it's it. I just remember you know growing up with people like that and and you just you just gravitate toward him for for whatever reason that that natural magnetism he really does have it. They certainly mature beyond his years. He doesn't doesn't seem like a young kid on his way up more like a established veteran almost present so what in your mind what are what is the outlook look for him as far as making the roster this season so without putting too much on it. I would say it's his job to lose. <hes> i mean you know if we're going to look at this group to to be quite honest i i i would put him at the top <hes> just in terms of his shot. His his reach is is ability to kinda in a shutdown guys because of that size. He just brings so many things in the last year. You know like he talked about that first year pro. It's not somebody coming out of juniors or college seattle whole year. You know playing pro thing with <unk> chicago wolves making calder cup run. He got playoff experience so much coming out of that that that at first year that's gonna benefit him going forward and nothing against the other guys. I just think you know if you're looking at ceiling. I think he has the highest ceiling out of all of them and i would think you know if there's one guy that you would kind of peg you know okay. If there's going to be a seventh guy he's the rookie nikei. At least for me would be the favourite to <hes> to win that job at camp so you go so colleague miller out potentially mckay again looks like as we said earlier derek england in <hes> <hes> in the in the defensive mix for the golden knights going forward as far as front eric <unk> is out so since we've talked last time here on the podcast which was was just tuesday. Eric allah has been traded part of the casualties for the golden knights this off season what what did that trade mean and for this organization besides just helping them get back to the cat. Yeah i mean i think there's all those sorts of implications and you know he was an unrestricted free agent <hes> next year and you can look at it would gonna rental and you know all sorts of things i wouldn't trade the george mcphee talked about but you know i think the ramifications of at least as it currently stands is probably means code. Yagan is your third line signer and it probably means that nikita goose of you know now house a spot. It cleared you're struggling to to see on the third line is gustav ican talk <unk>. How's it all gonna fit. If everybody's you don't have that issue anymore so so at this point if they're able to get something done with nikita gustav ahr which it sounds like you know they're at least talking in. We'll see you know that that's an interesting situation where we can talk about that because terms of goose oven and signing him and maybe whether an offer sheet from another team would come in and what would the nights do. Do you know in a situation like that but at least in the short term i think you know jala being moved means on paper. You're liner's probably nikita goose of cody eakin alex tuck which not the worst third line in the in the league for sure any offensive very right and now i guess the flip side of that would be george matisse talked about if you're not a two hundred foot player if you're getting your defensive zone you know what what use are you so. I mean clearly cody. Eakin is a guy who's been a solid two hundred mm foot center. I don't know that defensive prowess cutic- says the strength. I would imagine it's not <hes> i think certainly alex talk would would you have some some things to continue to work on defensively. Maybe that's that's you know not the construction that jordan phen- jar glenwood like but at least on paper cheaper that that's the way it looks and that's the way you know what this trade kind of opened up for what we talk about the salary cap in their back <hes> you know within within basically being compliant pending the outcome of some of these other deals but it's a it's an interesting spot for gustav who will probably come to the team and asks for a lot more than they can actually afford and then their answer is it's all we got you got. You gotta take so you're you're right. I mean it opens possibility for a team actually eh pulling out the offer sheet out of the out of the attic and doesn't have to call on that and making that happen again or maybe that is something that forces george mcphee has talked in the past about about like it's not a bad thing to have these deadlines that kind of kick in on you and you know for them if if that happened they'd have a deadline of having to make a decision on it. How do you see this plan because i my sense from mcphee as we just heard from him everybody else he's like were closed for close induces like we're talking. It didn't seem that encouraging necessarily yeah. He also said that he you know it's not like urgency with if i'm i'm not hundred hundred percent on this but i'm pretty sure he's arbitration-eligible also in which now that would be an interesting case. What how do you have your harvard that you know i mean what are you give him. There's nothing to go off of so from not standpoint i get. I guess there's there's a fallback if they're able to you know do all those sorts of things. Are i mean you know longterm what i'm really interested in just how good he is you know in if they get them signed. I mean you know they they they went through so many hoops to russia to get him <unk> over here you know with his contract and all those sorts of things goose kind of talked about in the world championships about <unk> showing loyalty to the nights that they were the first team you no to make the offer in that's unders rights and things like that so you know what i'm sure there's good faith negotiating on all sorts of things but you also think it performed so well in the world's. Maybe some other teams are looking at him going a if they're you know cap issued purgatory whatever and they're trying to sign this guy. Maybe maybe maybe there's a chance of to pry him away. We've certainly heard that teams of at least ask. I don't know how interested george mcphee and killing recrimination in them are oren in terms of dealing him rather than signing him but it it definitely seems like it's a different situation than say like like you mentioned england or even like tomas tauch <unk> who giorgis pretty much come out you know right out and said you know we're close. We pretty much know who's coming back. You would think that that he would be one of them so so at least for the next few days and in the next couple of weeks it'll be interesting to see how gustav thing plays out ultimately i would think i'll give them the benefit benefit of the doubt that he would sign with them after everything you know they went through but i do think that an offer sheet is at least a possibility <hes> that'd be kinda interesting to see i i'm kind of i'm kind of curious on how all that is going to play out because i think it's a unique situation that we haven't haven't really seen much have a couple of other situations. Also workout will find out malcolm superman as an as well so <hes> some things to monitor even if the golden knights don't plan on being incredibly active when free agency starts because they really chant july first first first day of the of the period. Not you know well he he kind of made made the comment of we won't be big game hunting. We'll be watching other people fish which was interesting and he kind of made it made it out like hey what you're doing is you're just watching and hoping these teams way overspend for guys and then all of a sudden there and tough cap spots and they've committed way too much money certain guy so <hes> that's kind of where the nights will be as as spectators is hoping for guys away overpay for free agency are coming up in the next couple of weeks but not a whole lot to goal. We're going to be able to do no. I'm just picturing jordan murphy with like one of those hats. I think the fishing lures on it like sitting on the on the shoreline maybe he would wear the whole totally totally them for sure but we don't we also mentioned <hes> we talked a little bit about it with nick egg but <hes> nicholas wa coming coming over from the carolina organization and they're at cal trade. I still feel again. I'll just explain it again. He has informed the golden knights nights in their p._r. Staff that he wants to go by wa announcers on the games. Call him what he himself on a video said his name is nicholas roy oy. I feel like we should go with roy. I i just feel like that should happen. You don't get to go back and forth. It's not allow. I think there's like guys i i mean obviously like fis men's the one like the feast monier but like i've heard like i'm stretching my brain here to try to think of these guys like suddenly just all of a sudden. Oh i after like ten years old. We have been pronouncing your name wrong. There's one that is my favorite player that i talk about all the time and it was a controversy last year. Hard knocks tyrod. Taylor is now supposedly to rod but i feel i feel like it's one parents tyrod and the other says to rot. That's what i believe it is is because they did interviews with his parents and they both said it differently and i think that's where that comes from yeah so we'll have to like kolomna kegs parents or hey experiencing find out like like whatever it will. Hey nicholas trained out. We're good with wa. Roy is going to be the nightmare yeah. I can see that being in an issue i really can do. We have to say because he wants to be one now. He's what i feel like we have to. We have to call him. Say we have to like hold onto this right like like. I'm going to go in that first day and just be like here's the video yeah explain buying this. You know like what do we got here. Let's figure this out man. We'll figure it out this. This will be an ongoing controversy will certainly cover on the golden edge podcast going forward <hes> so diploma campus over <hes>. I guess anything really stand out to you..

"It's gonna weird spot. It's <hes> that's just the world we live in. It's always kind of been like that and you go to camps and breath. You're out there playing with guys that are really good buddies of yours and you're all you're all competing for your all competing the plane job and know hopefully today that we in all planned the n._h._l. Together in and that's going to be uh gonna be fun because we've kind of grown up together so this whole thing like i didn't know the before my first development camp that's where i met him and no three years later where he's probably one of my best buddies we roommates assurance chicago <hes> and now we're like it's it's funny. I love hanging out with guys every day. It's it's a nice little competitive edge to battle with each other to to arrives respond bagasse or ice time in chicago or whatever it might be thirty year here development camp and you've been a part of the organization for out of any of the guys at the n._h._l. Level level like kind of like not even hazing outright but like kinda got on your little chirp that you now nothing nothing too crazy. I've gotten to know over over the guys <hes> just throw camps <unk> esau bunch around the rink this weekend <hes> there's no hazing of maybe that starts wendy. How when you make a team but watch offer flirt. I've heard a joke sir but not all guys a great now. Say hi in the room when i see them <unk>. It's just it's so it's so nice. Having <hes> nor the group of guys like are here in the group guys like played within in chicago that not it really it really help out now. Young man just makes life logan easier because you camper drums nervous especially. I capture normally know what to expect him. <hes> <hes> no to have a guy like <hes> the guy that really stuck out for me in my first scientific nap was nature who was noticed. The night sky was on the bench talking to me and helped me through awesome. <unk> only makes transition a lot easier and he's that's just one guy can email me all the guys around not just say hi so this is the third camp that you've been hearing and we've had a chance to interact and one of the things that always struck me and i think golden knights fans and will will realize this about you. More and more is just the way you carry yourself to a little bit different than than a lot of people. I mean that as a compliment obviously <hes> i can see you down down the road. Being a guy may be wearing a wearing see things like that. Is that something that you're kind of aware of carrying yourself the way that you do and just kind of you know commanding a room you just i. There's something that that's a little bit different about you. I guess it's not something i think about her. <hes> try to do that thank you. That's that's a that's supposed highs. Call up but douglas my mom dad my parents brought me up and <hes> no they've been awesome with me and <hes> it was never know about hockey or hauppauge word hockey growing up. It's no big person. My dad taught me how to check a ham properly when i was probably <unk> sex so it's just so they brought me up and <hes> now i'm super thankful for them and they've been they've been great no great role models for me and my mom and dad auden and that's that's occurred to them in your hockey career those leadership you know being a guy in the room and things like that. Is that something. You've always tried to take on certainly. I don't think you know no. You'd you'd walk in here at twenty and and take a room but you know down the road. Is that something as you've grown up on teams and maybe as things progress here that you know if it's a naturally really happens <unk>. I guess gravitate toward. I guess a little bit l. It's not something i i really think about. It happened in junior kind of went in any nor my second year. I got the letter in mississauga and just i've always kinda been always want a ladder growing up. It's just kind of one of those thanks. I don't know what it is. It's not you know. I feel like if you go to your way to try to be that leader use that. You're not going to click with any of the guys now for me. I just i wanna get to know everyone and <hes> we're all here. <unk> with the same goal china gets on each other not that will make friends and nobody's it's gonna be guys that <hes> they're gonna come up organization together. It's a it's a lot of fun on after try to be anyone. Difference never comes in themselves and we'll go from there. Obviously you're looking looking for playing in the n._h._l. In in being a part of this roster at some point in the very near future but what about living in vegas are you looking forward to that. The weather's <unk> insane. It's credible talking my mom yesterday apparently ornery back home so it's a i mean obviously the city's incredible <hes> <hes> i've got to have gotten the city low bit not no since being drafted <hes> it's i mean it doesn't get much better than this the the weather the stuff around here. You're an alanon even talking about the strip just like where we are right now summerlin. It's <hes> no. It's it's it's awesome <unk>. I love. I love spending time here and i could. I'd i love to live here. Man ellen play the nights that that'd be a dream. Come true on a real level being a professional athlete in this city and being a young guy has to it's like the dream of everyone. I'm sure it's a shirts. It'd be a lot of fun. I that i've experienced anything. Angelique <unk> shoulders always doing it's like i said i've really enjoyed my time here on one of the best parts being now no player for the nights to be. They just look at t. mobile. You look at our development camp. Scrimmages are sold out with the you know. The fans show up in just the way. The city really rallied around the team team. That's <hes> as a player. That's that's what gets you going. That's what you that's what you thrive on and not and that that's that's to me is no one of the coolest parts voters so we're rapid development camp here. Is this the first week that you felt short as a high layer no kidding. I've never seen the <unk>. I know i knew mccune before i came here. Is we played together. <hes> he played for sun county panthers while i was planning catching her and we played the alliance. I haven't seen him in a really on time because he <hes> he went off. You played in the u._s. Program and then went to school in plano which also we were planning against each other anymore and seen him a long time and then when i saw his name on the <unk> be nice to sam and he was always a big guy but he never was that much bigger than me and i saw him and i literally look got better which doesn't happen to very often. I was like wow he should move again really just sort of talking about keenan suburbs by the way from the camp. He is a he's. He's a big gentleman is he makes me feel short which that doesn't happen very often but it was great to see him. He's an old friend. I was talking to save here. Kinda know connect them up in talking a little bit hang out with in terms of the ice obviously being a taller defenseman. Maybe what are the advantages for that. You know certainly in terms of reach which in things like that <hes> i think max pitcher eddie in training camp even used the chris pronger think that certainly probably the high end of things but as hard percents water sort of the advantages that you have i think though my my reaches a huge advantage for me in <hes> spill the close gaps bit quicker <hes> you know without in newark on the jolly really my coach. They're really not taught me how to use my stick no properly advantage and now i feel like once i figured figured that out a little bit of it really helped no might defending <hes>. I'll say this no shots down a little bit. Quicker must actually probably sixty four so and we'll get you out of here. Let you enjoy the rest of your day but the rest of the summer. What does it look like for. I'm gonna head home later this afternoon. <hes> probably take a few days hang a home mom and dad and then all of nine going to aurora <unk> robertson lived there for for the rest of the summer amer so spent my time there and it's going to be a quick turnaround will be back in september brixton's low. We'll see you back here for training camp in your luck the rest away enjoy yourself a little bit. Thank you appreciate it nick thanks.

"vegas golden knights" Discussed on Golden Edge - Vegas Golden Knights Hockey

"Sports mobile from station casinos so check that out golden edge as we said out here's the national arena dave shane with me and we're going to be joining a few minutes by nick haig defenseman for the knights who may very well be in the mix mix being the plans for the golden knights here as they go into training camp as part of the roster potentially dave so much to get into but the colin miller deal is what we're talking about right now because it just happened we just heard from george mcphee as we sit here on saturday afternoon that deal certainly a cap related move certainly certainly a guy who seemed to fall out of favour of it down the stretch but not very interesting. The george mcphee said part of this deal was certainly helping out with the salary cap but also to say it. Hey we've got a lot of really young talented defenders and we've got a clear some spots for them. Yeah i mean that's kind of what you do. You know you're in a in a cap situation like there. In you need to get some entry entry level contracts on the books we kind of talked about this the other day and you're able to get rookies and production for you know for inexpensive contracts. That's you know that's the way to get it done so i mean part of it's going to be improving it. You know obviously a guy like nick. Hey a guy like whether it's white cloud. <hes> don't hoglund hoglund. Maybe jimmy <unk> when he signed clearly. You know it's going to be a good competition. In training camp will kind of see if there's another move another tweak or something and and what opens up in terms of like you know right side left side in in if they're actually kind of position specific in and if a guy house to kind of feel that you know just as an example you know if it comes down to a right defense you know an it's nikei versus say a right hand guy like like dylan <unk> zach white cloud. You know i don't know what that decision comes down to but clearly to be a competition clearly all those guys are gonna be in the mix and in clearly george mcphee and in killing the criminal and his staff. You'll like you know they have players at this point here n._h._l. Ready and you got to open the door form. Yeah no question about it and by the away not only does it or n._h._l. Already has thought might be n._h._l. Not ready anymore like maybe <unk> derek england who it sounds like the nights are are pretty close to deciding to bring him back. If you listen to george mcveigh's yeah i mean he pretty much without saying. They're ringing amac you pretty much. They're bringing them back. He said i mean at this point. The only thing that really kind of working on his performance bonus stuff <hes> last year he was a one point five million cap it and i believe he made another one million in performance bonus. So you know probably something similar. I guess what would happen. In the next couple of days. You would think free agency would start on monday <hes> so so you know if he's back that would give them six and then you know without point. You're thinking okay. There's at least one spot on the blue line for one of the rookies and then if they go thirteen forwards ords a defenseman. Maybe you're looking at two mckie's. If if you know coming out of training camp that that's you know what they feel is best for them so a lot of talk about about the defensemen will get into their cala trade as well as we continue but as we said we are going to be able to you know sit down and have a conversation with one of the prospects on the blue line and maybe one of the top prospects on the blue line nikei guy who was drafted a couple years go. He's in his third develop camp on the verge of making the roster was part of that chicago. Wolves runs the h. l. finals and <hes> he's going to sit down with us right now. So oh hang on okay. I've heard your name like three different ways and i've seen her before we go anywhere. We're gonna interrupt the interview. Say your first name and say your last awesome. And what are we gonna call you from now on <hes> neck egg nick. Hey it's like you're like. I screwed up some sticks. You're saying hey to someone yeah and then with like jacob g. u. H. okay okay because i've heard hag. We it's not nicholas like my mom. Calls me necklaces my name my mom causing the all the guys communist you prefer nickel yeah. Most people call me necker. Guys are on the room com hager because we've got many. We've got some name controversies. That's right now that we have to. We have to sort out i think so. There's a new player coming in. It's also nick but it's it's while a roy in. We're having trouble with this one because here's the thing on this you could. Maybe use this as a m owed on the road against them. There's video of him saying. I'm nick roy now. He has contacted us and said it's what he said roy himself so. I don't know what's going on with that. It's insane around here. I have no idea what transition take his french so. I think it'd be law right. I would think so too but in then that's what he wants to be called now but he said roy on a video. How can you get your own name wrong. You've never got your name wrong. Have you. The hope not since we veered completely off the rocks and we're talking about nicholas law you play against him in the colliery finals yet. What stood not what maybe. What kind of player can we expect to see. Come cheney it was it was awesome. News no big guy no good skaters newsreel stuff to play against. You're going to the corner with them now. You have to work for every inch really what i noticed. Who's who's great on face offs. It seemed like whenever author no they'd be starting with pocket <hes> hard guy gordon. Adam scored three goals in the finals. He was a guy that definitely played played in their top two lines and now he's a real good player so you you had that long season and just finish by in your backyard development camp but how much did that experience of going through the playoffs. It's not the stanley cup playoffs but it's a playoff series. It's a couple of series. It's run to the finals. How big is that for you. The other teammates as you develop into n._h._l. Players i. I think we learned tom. We had so much fun. <hes> a great group of guys in there and i feel like you're going through that run though some that i've never experienced before. I'm <hes> pretty thankful that i was able to do that in first year and now i feel like there's there's lessons you learn <hes> going on a deep playoff run a you might not necessarily ah get exposed to <hes> without that run so now just no looking back on. I mean we had a great group of guys. <hes> no guys were leader. Samir khan at the grove <unk> i looked to and they <hes> they really helped me out <hes> china and no one like the the ups and downs kind of walk me through what what happens opens a platform like that because obviously never <hes> never experienced and same with the coaches they were awesome. We kind of know went through together. So guys have been there before. Some guys like myself self not and never had so much fun playing hockey than on that on that ron mom so we we just got a press conference with george mcphee the general manager juerg but incoming president of hockey operations. Gotta be clear about that. He was talking about the trader. Colin miller just happened yesterday in one of the things he said hey. We've got a lot of really really talented. Young defenders and we have to make it like there has to be opportunities for them. We want them to play so it's cap space for sure but it's also hey. Here's a here's a roster. I thought we want to lead gymnasts coming up. I mean are you paying attention on that level of like a chameleon straighted. That's good. That's a good spot for me. I mean i come in. I wanna come going to camp. <hes> no no matter what happens with no traits or whatever i want to captain now i think either way i'm gonna have to earn a spot and now i want. I want no proof that i belong and at the end of the day the way the way it works is i'm going to have to take the job from someone else. <hes> nor whether it's trades or whatever happens i'm still going to have to come to camp and play well and play my game and and just proved to know the coaches in the management that that i belong that's ebba earn spot. You're guy who obviously being a second round pick and being a taller guy skating. I think was always kind of the knock on you at least a couple of years. Go maybe touch on your development. There think we've seen a different player in terms of your skating <hes> certainly from from development camp the last couple years in going at this year. I think <hes> was a new those no weakness mine and somebody had to work on <hes> now. I've spent a lot of time. We're skating now now. I know that probably known the most foreign scale through our plan the n._h._l. And now doubts it's always kind of in the back of my head overtime stuff on the ice sawant mature doing the right things. Not you know it's it's been great ever since i was. I was drafted that i get to work with now guys scotch on to really breaks it down for me and <hes> networks with skating coaches and <hes> and <unk> i now it's <hes> i wanna get a point where it's ingrained in the back of my head and every time i step out it might not necessarily be specifically for <hes> the skating part of it but now i've worked on so much. I feel like i'm always kind of thinking about a little bit. Make sure not going back in old habits and i think i think from a long way. We talk a lot to a guy like brayden mcnabb who are guy kinda similar thing you know in terms of the skating. It's always something he's working on clearly. It'll be always something you're continuing to work on. But how close did you feel it. It is right now. I guess you feel like you're out of spot our our. You're comfortable <unk> guys in certain situations. I guess i think so i found myself like any of this year of doc sits on the n._f._l. But i feel i'm coughing my safe. I feel like i could not in the game and be talking about you. Know the roster in going camping everything else. Do you look at your spot like. Are you going to camp saying that's my spot. I'm i'm going to take it. I think you kinda have to <hes> no. I'm competing with a bunch of guys. I saw my buddies we gather all year in chicago. Got said cogs in whitey embellish on these guys. They're my best buds. I hang out with all the time but now we are the fact of matter. Were were all continue to play in the n._h._l. And now it was fun. It's like we're nowhere competitive guys. It's now away from the rank. Now that that that's never gonna win a friendship anything but i know we're all going to go out there and try to do everything that we can individually to <hes>. It's kinda feel weird though i mean it's a weird feeling my teammates were brothers going to battle together every night and on the ice but at the same time i'm going to be that guy to get my job in the joe..

"vegas golden knights" Discussed on Golden Edge - Vegas Golden Knights Hockey

"S._d._n. Sports mobile from station casinos but with that out of the way. Let's get to our conversation with golden president gary boobs then day. We're happy to be here and <hes> <hes> ready to talk some hockey so it's easy to get us here. We're gonna talk hockey so we're looking forward to it. Yeah awesome well first of all pretty easy question but how's your off season and so far it's been fantastic obviously <hes> it ended quicker than we had hoped in terms of the the season itself and so it feels like it's been forever but it's it's been great great. The business has been fantastic. <hes> everything's coming together and we can't wait to get to september so we can get training camp opened up. Get that first preseason game under our belt on september number fifteen th and then get ready to <hes> take on those santa's san jose sharks on october second so everybody's fired up so i kind of always think of you as it's like the george mcphee off the ice. I don't know if that's an accurate description that that's kind of how i think of you so maybe for a lot of the fans that are listening. That don't really know what you do. How would you oh. I guess describe your role with the organization other than george and i are probably two totally opposite personalities. He's a former player. He's very competitive. He's probably a lot smarter than and i am <hes> but i i really i focus on the business side of what we do. We talk a lot about with our group but our our job is real simple. <hes> it's to drive the revenues that are necessary. Sorry to support what we wanna do. From a hockey perspective it's to make sure that we have the best fan experience and home-ice advantage in hockey so again so our players can do what they do at the highest level and make sure that we give back and serve our community <hes> the golden knights wouldn't be go nights if it wasn't for the the entire valley alley <hes> the city of las vegas city henderson the way they support this team is amazing and <hes> we never lose sight of it so i said our business team. It's real simple. That's what we're here to do you and if we do that at a high level then we're doing everything we can to make sure that the guys on the ice have the best opportunity to be successful and that's what we're focused on every single day before you got to the knights organization you work for the hurricanes. You worked for a group that worked with the dell stars. Were you always a hockey fan. I was a hockey fan from the earliest earliest period of time as much as you can be growing up in oklahoma <hes>. We had a central hockey league team so i was fortunate. My dad allowed me to tag along many times. He'd take guests customers things like that to the games <hes> but i don't know that i really knew that i was that much of a hockey fan played baseball as a kid <hes> growing up and and so that was really kinda my first sport <hes> but i had a real unique opportunity to work for the international hockey league in cleveland ohio and i think at that point that's really where i truly fell in love with the game and really started to understand what the game was about. <hes> the players the athleticism the skill the physicality a hand eye coordination guy who played baseball <hes> i'm amazed at what these guys do and <hes> and so that's really where i truly kind of fell in love with the game of hockey and to be able to match it up with the sports side. <hes> for me is the perfect trick fit. <hes> had a great opportunity in cleveland with the cavaliers but <hes> the people that really knew me. Well knew that if the n._h._l. Ever came knocking that i probably wouldn't be there much longer and so nobody was surprised when i told him i was leaving to go work in the national hockey league so you mentioned the cows. I wanna actually ask about that just because you know for hockey and n._b._a. A obviously you know the commissioner has across but there's usually not a lot of crossover with the two leagues. I guess you know my question. First off is just kind of what you took from the n._b._a. Kind of coming into this you know <hes> maybe like game presentation things like that. <hes> you know anything else. You know obviously the financial side of things but just what it what were you able to kind of take from from the success of the n._b._a. and bring to the n._h._l. I guess when you came here. Yeah i think first and foremost if you were to look at the four or five five major professional sports leagues that are out there the two that are the most similar <hes> are the n._b._a. In the national hockey league <hes> the time of year the number of games that are played <hes> <hes> the way local revenues really drive the business and how it connects to <hes> to things like the salary cap as an example and and how these businesses run from a financial perspective respective <hes> but i really believe the n._b._a. Is one of the best run sports leagues in the world. <hes> i really learned a lot <hes> the way they take <hes> the best practices in every discipline of the business <hes> it's it's done in a very very high level and how they share that information <hes> really makes <hes> really makes for a great opportunity from a business perspective even so being able to work in that league <hes> see excellence at every level and be able to bring that to our organization <hes>. I tell people all the time look i'm. I'm not an expert in in many things <hes> but i have seen excellence in every aspect of the business in terms of what it takes to be successful on the business side and so oh to be able to apply that to the golden knights organization it served me well and it's something that <hes> you know we take a lot of pride in because i really believe it's not just what happens on the ice that makes makes for a successful organization. I think it it starts both on the ice and off the ice and that's why i think it's important for the business side to understand how they connect <hes> because the players they they wanna win. They want great cultures. They want fun experience. <hes> they wanna home ice advantage those things are important and so when we talk about <hes> what the golden knights are and we start to think about our story as we look forward <hes> you know there's six seven hundred other players out there that are future potential golden knights and so what are we doing on the business side to help add to that story so when george and kelly macrame in in our bill foley when they're out talking to these players they're talking more than just about the things that would be <hes> <hes> just specific to the hockey side of our business and again proud of that that we're able to contribute in a small way so dan gilbert's over its famous for his comic sans memos and i do not do my memos in comic sans but i did learn a lot from dan about culture <hes> about <hes> establishing establishing what your d._n._a. is as business and how you communicate that d._n._a. <hes> we have our own thing here called the knight's code and a lot of what we wanted to do was just make sure that our business business team understood <hes> again how we want to treat our customers our stakeholders <hes> members of the media <hes> how we want to treat each other internally and <hes> really just providing kind of a road map <hes> but also utilizing some of the terminology hockey so we have our own nights code and it's something that <hes> i really learned from dan gilbert <hes> <hes> he <hes> he was really the master at <hes> taking culture and what was important to him and then translating it to and we had close to thirty thousand employees within within all of the dan gilbert family of companies when i left back in two thousand sixteen and so is fortunate to see <hes> to see culture are really high level now. I believe you were with cleveland thirteen years. Do you have any good lebron stories in that time. Do i have any good lebron stories. You know there's probably a lot of them that <hes> that we probably wouldn't be comfortable talking about the one i like to share his early on when you think about young people <hes> and and it and it and it doesn't necessarily <hes> at one point in time when he came to our organization he was eighteen years old and so you kind of get that in your mind and so he's an eighteen year old kid who obviously had a slightly different <hes> experience in ninth and tenth eleventh and twelfth grade than most kids <hes> because he <hes> has many people thought you know he was. Maybe the greatest greatest <hes> <hes> generational type player coming into the n._b._a. Since since probably magic johnson and larry bird <hes> because if you think about michael jordan he was a third round pick so <hes> from early on people knew that he was going to be a special player but <hes> we were there was one point in time we were probably three or four months into the season and and <hes> someone within our finance group. It said you know <hes> we've paid out a certain amount of money to lebron but none of the checks have been cashed and we're like well okay. That's kind of weird. Maybe we should go. Ask him and <hes> turns out. He's still had all the checks just in his you know at this time. There weren't direct deposits like today. It wasn't that long ago but these were actual checks. He didn't even think to go. Take him to the bank. He just put them in his glove box and so there were three or four months of n._b._a. The h. x. sitting in his glove box and we're like lebron you you have to put those in the bank. You can't just put them in your <hes> and he's it's like yeah okay yeah i just didn't even cross his mind and but that's an eighteen year old kid right and that just wasn't as priority and maybe maybe at the end of the day it served him well <hes> because one thing that i do give lebron a lot of credit for as he always used to talk about. I want to keep the main thing the main thing and for him the main thing was basketball all and i think if you look at his career whether you like lebron or not whether you respect his game or not <hes> what you can't argue is the consistency that he's had throughout the fifteen plus years he's been in the n._b._a. And i believe there's really very few players that can match his resume for consistency and and i think that's what makes him one of the all time greats. Also you guys have a number of new initiatives that have happened or you're going through so i just wanted to kind of run through a few of them. <hes> first first of all you guys have updated city national arena. A little bit got a new look some fresh paint <hes>. How do you make it's looking right now well. We're we're proud of it. I you know the honest. The answer is <hes> when we first moved in august of twenty seventeen. We had about a nine month window to get the facility complete. Our first priority was to make sure the building was complete that the n._h._l. Facilities were ready for our players to come in and september of that year and so <hes> what i would call the brand component <hes> it was not a part part of the mix it was basically like buying spec home with basic khaki white khaki pain or white paint on the walls and so it didn't to me feel like an n._h._l. Facility ability a lot of the players play areas didn't feel like an n._h._l. Player area it was nice. It was fine. The carpet was clean all that <hes> but it really didn't have the look can feel that we wanted and so after we got through that first season <hes> we had a big vision for what we wanted it to be. We just didn't have the time to do it and so immediately actually even during in the playoffs that first season <hes> we started with the player areas down in the locker rooms down in the training areas and we started to put up a lot of the graphic vision that we had and then and after we got through that <hes> that season in the off season we started into the ranks and so painting the walls black and the gold and <hes> putting up the the imagery the logos <hes> the castle concept that we built with the video board on the n._h._l. Rank hanging banners <hes> a lot of that investment really came in the second can season and honestly it's still ongoing today <hes> as we're continuing with work with inside the venue who still got some more work on the non n._h._l. Rink <hes> that that we're completing here in the near term and it's just kind of an ongoing thing to integrate the brand and the experience that we've been able to create at the fortress at t. mobile arena <hes> and bring it to city national arena so i'm henderson resonance all ask about that rink and just maybe the progress with that and maybe more so as just kind of the vision vision with that in in what what you kind of see that bringing you know to that area obviously for the organization for the city and beyond yeah we're. We're very excited about henderson. Listen <hes> first and foremost <hes>. If you were to step back three or four years ago even before the franchise was granted billfold. We talked a lot about building the game of hockey rocky in the market and so.

"In two years old in terms of plane plane in the league at great success making the playoffs two years rose fantastic <hes> we'd be still in the the playoffs today heavy at that bad call and we won't get over just yet but we'll get over next year over going all the way golden golden edge back with you guys yes. It's the off season but so much to get into talking about the golden knights and some of the changes that have been made decided to pop on. We'll do this throughout the off season. Let you guys know update what is going on with the golden knights. Maybe like a brief look at what the off season is gonna look like as well here on the golden edge podcast cast adam hill ben goats shane here with you. Make sure you like subscribe and share everything you do with the podcast and let your friends know that we are bringing. You guys golden. The nights news around dekalb nder not just during the season a big off season ahead for the goldeneye. It's already got started so let's jump right into it in guys. <hes> we heard there right off the top <hes> bill foley talking about a change in the front office structure not sure how much it's going to change things on a day to day basis but certainly in name as kelly recruitment bumped up from assistant g._m. To general manager george mcphee moving up in the world and seem seem to be staying in place but the names have changed and the biggest thing kelly mccray staying around the highly coveted kelly mccrum around the league staying around in vegas for the long-term. Yes a really interesting move by the golden knights of course but crewmen had at least gathered some interest from the oilers for kind of their vacant position russian seattle's expansion team. You know they don't have a firm time line but they were definitely interested in at least talking democrat about their potential g._m. Position so the nights it's kinda got creative to keep a guy that they think very highly of and not just of course what he does personally but how he works with george mcphee i mean they've talked about their partnership. You know they're a married couple. Essentially murphy says they finish each other's sentences like an old married couple. We buying that slightly. I it's it was a little interesting to hear the talk about each other through the courses press conference in basically be like this is the mcphee saying this. This is the greatest professional relationship i've ever had like. We're so in lockstep. We never disagree. That was a direct quote which i found interesting pink 'cause. I'm sure that's not entirely true but i'm sure everybody disagrees about south -actly stuff comes up but yeah it really seems like they empowered or this brain trust with. I'm sure a lot more money to stay together no matter what and i think you do kind of here the bond between them when they talk about each other. Are there specifically <hes> thought it was interesting when mcphee was talking about macrumors family in his kind of reaction to that so i think that's something we should actually give listened to right now. This is a very good day for the vegas. Golden knights <hes> the decisions made of what's best for the vegas golden knights. I'm personally very very happy <hes> to be able to do this. I'm proud to be able to give this to kelly because he is more than ready to do this. Do a well so i'd like to say congratulations to kelly to terry <hes> their son mickey happens to be standing in for kelly at the amount of toba hall of fame today kelly's inducted there so not a bad day for hockey man and <hes> in chelsea who's at home watching on television television because someone has to watch the <hes> <hes> congrats kelly's parents and the big brother brand so you're there one of a couple of very emotional moments of the press conference actually in you thought i mean i think one thing that show is that first of all george mcphee not a robot <hes> we can <hes> figure that out but i think you see just how much he cares cares about kelly macrame in and how you know how valuable is to him but also how much he cares about on a personal level because that is mcphee getting emotional about mccrum history in his backstory so i think that does show kind of the depth of their relationship is not just you know this working relationship that just to hockey people talking hockey not all the time we should point out at the very like brad mcraven was <hes> died in a plane crash with his hockey teams for context there. That's kind of mcphee is getting emotional about is obviously brad. Kremlin would probably love to be there for his brother but due to circumstances he could not for sure and then devoted you kind of take out that hold press conference that is that moment you know me and all that i if if we thought this was just a business card are in a fancy office and maybe a raise you know okay. I mean george mcphee still in charge but like this clearly early meant a lot to killing the criminal in a lot to george mcphee like this is not just a title change. This was not just a move to keep him here in what i'd like. This was a big deal to kelly macrame to george mcphee to the organization like you know whether we want to kind of look at it in terms of you know. How does it change things not much but to them. It clearly meant something that that was the biggest takeaway from <unk> for me about that. They continue to work together because in all likelihood the hood <hes> mcdermott was going to go somewhere and i mean i fully believe he was going to seattle. I i absolutely think they would have hired him and they're working. Relationship would have been over so while. I don't think it changes anything day to day in a you know who's making the decisions type of level. I think it certainly means that what they have built continues. I think the other side of two is thursday. <hes> you know kinda. Put your money where your mouth is in terms of if we want to make sacrifices his players and you know we talk about a team team in an organization you know kind of everybody pulling on the same rope in those types of cliches like this is clearly george mcphee stepping aside a little bit conceding some of the power to keep you know the organization in the in the structure together in obviously i'm sure the players it's not lost on them. I guess in the summer that when they get asked to do these types of things and they see it from upper management from ownership and whatever obviously it filters down <hes> i think it just one of those other i guess tone setters for an organization <hes> you know things that as as the team is growing rowing in in revolving two to three years in you know you wanna establish those types of things in in early on they had a chance to do it. Obviously george mcphee. I loved loved the bill foley quote about the <hes> kelly's jammed georgia's in charge but we're all together however it was or you know like to me that was that was kind of the in a nutshell everything but that's how that's how kelly wants to work. You know i was trying to ask them. Why why does this appeal to you. You had a chance to re. He clearly had a chance to run seattle. I mean they would've from all indications in everything that was kind of out there in n._h._l. Grapevine whatever you wanna call it. They would have approved this summer. You know him as the g._m. Had everything gone well in an interview. If if that's the route that he wanted to take so you know run your own organization versus you know stick with guys like mark stone and ryan reason ican and cody glass coming mm-hmm and through in kind of his his core a little bit you know we talked about having divided it up. Fifteen fifteen you know took the league in each of them kind of work collaboratively in in that way in you know kelli kelli macron's had a lot of influence in terms of his guys and in guys that as they were making those lists and and things like that for the expansion draft who who he wanted and and you know it was kind of painting to me got a bit of attachment you know maybe we'll find <unk> out next week when he comes in and talks to guys for <hes> for a little bit you know that that'll be interesting in in fine but dave preview on our next podcast that you smart <hes> so yeah to me. The organizational structure stays largely the same <hes> color coming becomes more of the face the the guy other teams deal with directly and the guy that you know selfishly for us that we probably deal with a lot more <hes> which i expect him to be more kind of open and george vi he has dropped in the past. He doesn't really say anything will see if he kind of you know has system on on recriminating what he does or mccrum kind of becomes his own personality and has his own way of dealing with things but <hes> bend you like the move for the mets overall. Yes i think what dave said is really crucial. This is a tone tone center and this is what i think smart organizations you know not just in sports but in business whatever you wanna call it do they find ways to get creative to keep keep people that have helped make them successful and in sports you know often. We see that there's kind of this natural progression. If you're rising person a front office you go jump trump to leave your other organization but here you've got an owner who has said multiple times were not gonna spend just to cap we will spend as much as we can to help make the organization successful also continuing to invest in this team and saying you know i'm not just going to invest in ranks and players. I'm invested people and if you do good work. I will try to find a way to reward you. No matter what obviously the extra cost to hayes wall it is and so i found that very interesting i mean it's been pretty obvious. This partnership is worked for three years. I mean this is even though the nights had a disappointing finish to the air. This is about as good of iran as you. You could have imagined for this team in his first two years and i think it's important not to lose sight of that. When discussing this these are two guys that just met in vienna the airport which is a crazy specific origin story <hes> that they both came up with during this press conference but they met in airport decided it. Hey let's try this out together and it's kind of worked better than i think anyone could have imagined i mean they seem to complement each other like how bill foley at a season ending press conference call them mister inside mr outside because criminal is the more outgoing fold one mcphee is the more inward we're thinking.
