"Just about you know what it's like in poland right now with sri on tech and or coach and hopscotch has been very vocal and supportive of iga and being inspired by her and they have this cool relationship back and forth that you know they view each other as inspirations. He also seems to be a good dude. You know. we're always hesitant to to say that publicly about any man on the atp tour or any man in general but the evidence thus far shows the mr hor catch is on the up and up. Yeah he's a very endearing personality. There has been this jeff going round of him trying to kiss his miami trophy today and the most awkward way possible song like he was trying to bite in the mid section jahnig center said today on court that who birch is probably his best friend on tour and ego and hubert are just superstars in poland right. Now he'll crack the top twenty for the first time i believe he's landing in a number sixteen and that's the with. Adp still protecting some ranking points. So for mr is verify that must really piss him off. Can we not. Can we just not this episode. Please we've talked about rankings. More than enough. Well no because the very next thing here on the agenda is. I'd like to move past that now i think we're going to mention verbal impress in miami's verve said quote. I could ask you guys this back. Do you think should be seven to world with how i recently played. You think. I should not move one spot up. Maybe maybe one spot to spot three spots there should be some movement otherwise the rankings are just the same kind of like this is your classic case of if it's not benefiting me if it's not mimi mimi than it's wrong wrong wrong. I think you should be careful. Asking what the press about where he should be right now. I think you should be careful asking anybody where they think he should be right now. The title of this episode is the methodist person you know is a man part about his inspired by binge-watching several seasons of below deck. But like literally everywhere you turn in life there so man acting of this is kind of a truism on twitter a mean that's gone around that the messy est person you know. The most dramatic is usually a man and his true and it's also just to kind of rejection of the idea that women are too emotional for certain things it seems as though vasek pospisil maybe a little bit too emotional to be a tennis player and co leader of the pta. Because that's what we saw oak in miami. So here's what happened the x. First match against mackenzie mcdonald. At the end of the first set he completely melts down. It starts over a line call. He's down three five two mackey mcdonald. I he bangs on the towel thing and gets a warning then. He smashes his racket completely and gets a code violation for racket abuse. Shortly after he gets another code for an audible obscenity which is point penalty and then on the change over. This is where it happens. He goes completely off at the chair. Umpire gaba who is a a recovered victim of another canadian who almost knocked his eyeball out. Remember that we're not supposed to talk about that anymore. Denis shapovalov been completely rehabilitated to the point where he acts a prince on court which we know not to be the case. But this i mean are no man i mean. He is like the white house in the war of eighteen twelve under attack by canadians. Pospisil is the on his his chair and our noise likely. What's going on. What is this about. And then vashchuk says an hour and a half the chair of the atp fucking screaming at me players meeting for trying to unite the players for an hour and a half the leader of the atp. Get him outta here fucking asshole. Why am i supporting this fucking tour. You want to default me through this whole organization and it was like skirt. What noise lola. What are you talking about. The tennis world was like oh. This isn't about a a line call or something within the match like something actually went on the reactions to this ran. The gamut was like you tell them vasic to atp those big bad bastards. You tell them. People sympathized with his plight of trying to get better conditions for tennis players. And then some people were like you need to just shut the fuck up onto your job. Honestly my reaction has run the gamut as well. This is this is really complicated. The things are true here but the one thing that i keep coming back to is a woman. Most times is not allowed. The grace wayne. She's in a situation like this. Where you lose your blob on work right. He's at work and he's doing this other work business on the side and he's unable to separate the two one from the other and performed professionally in view of millions. You know my my soul lens perspective. When looking at this my gut reaction was that is really petulant. And i don't you would grant the same grace to a woman that same situation. Of course men view women as emotional because they don't see anger as an emotion right so when men are angry it can be read as righteous as rational as important and masculine right. Anger is masculine but win. Women have similar outbursts. They can be called shrill annoying hysterical. I understand or. I want to understand what precipitated this tantrum because obviously there is a lot of stuff going on in the background but i resent the way that the immediate response from some people were like. Oh just be gentle on it. Like he is an adult right like he's thirteen years at the chair. Umpire grown man. What did the chair do to deserve that outbursts. If if there's stuff going on at the bargaining table you got to keep that at the bargaining table and leave mr chair. Umpire are no out of it. This precipitates an online campaign players are out here. Sending many different messages hashtag players voice very vague weird tweets about how the players need a voice or we need to be united and there wasn't a whole lot about why why were angry. Why vasek was so pissed off and therefore my main reaction to this whole episode is what the hell happened at this meeting. Nobody has addressed right. There have been a few a. We've heard from people at the meeting that russia was treated poorly and called ignorant and uneducated by gow density..

"You can't run actually because it's a conflict of interest. And i was like well. We didn't know that that was an issue that that wasn't clear so it will be in the works. Well exactly so that was the other thing is is one one the. Hp has found out that we were on the list. They created overnight. They created a new law. A new by law in its bid to prevent us from actually being able to go there and represent players saying you know but it's okay that that you have you know I m g represented that own you know on the board at t. There's such or or are like i. It's i mean it blows. My mind blows my mind that it's okay that all these other insane conflicts of interests like no other sport in the world like they give pasta that that's no problem. That's no problem but but these two tennis players you know shouldn't be able to represent the players because they're trying to do something else so we're going to create a law right now overnight that the board wars going to pass and we're gonna stop them from going in and and you know it's it's it's crazy. It just shows you how desperate they are to maintain its it's upsetting but but it's reality in a sense though you have to kind of feel that you're going in the right direction because they're clearly threatened like there's a reason why this is all happening and you're obviously ruffling some feathers and you know it's it's it's clear that there is a problem they are that threatened by you guys go up -solutely why like like you. You nailed it right. It's like what is so wrong about having like a player. Group being represented by by professionals that like if if everything is run so smoothly and everything i mean. Everything is so fair to the players. Everybody why are they fighting the so like so hard right. It's so of course there's of course there's there's a issues there right. I mean everyone wants their business to be as profitable as possible. you know. that's the essence of it. Right in general. I mean so i get it. They're trying to protect their business in their income or their profitability. Also that grant slams nine going to get into the grasslands but That's that's the biggest issue issue of all the amount of the amount of money that they earn and and and tennis only has a hundred players that are making You know top hundred that are making a living and everybody else's suffering and all these other so it's there's yeah i think it should be very easy for at least three hundred players from the men's and three hundred hundred women's side at least to have to be able to have a nice living and be able to You know be profitable with.

"Is there any awkwardness than when you go to tournaments anyone like upset with you or it sounds like you know not conflict with them at all but it does sound like. You're not in agreeance completely. Is there any weirdness. No no i mean you know what the super i i would say. I would say that you know time will tell but i think most players get it. Most players are are. There are a few that are kind of against it but i would say the majority is Are not against it in for the right reason because there's nothing there's nothing militias here whatsoever. It's just like hey like rear were players like you know respect us. Let's have we're we're we're you know. Let's be partners in this. Business is bad as tennis. Unfortunately it's a business right so but but Yeah i mean i i. I'm still super optimistic. Because because at the end of the day all the players are in the same boat and and and for those that may be some some. Don't quite understand because they don't have a full picture of of what the of what the situation is an end soon enough that they will. And for those that you know maybe they. They don't understand the real dynamics of the tour and what really goes on And i think once they do than than there's you know think i think There's no reason they wouldn't. They wouldn't support Something like the epa because again it's not like or coming in with a you know of to destroy something like the slotted at all right you're seeking transparency which i don i mean. That's that's yeah exactly. Eight to be counseled lately has been a topic so when you guys. I resigned in august. I think it was you. Novak sam query. And john is ner. What's that because you want to leave or because you were told to leave and then now are you trying to get back in like. What's what's the council situation. Because i don't get it at all. Yeah so so when we originally we when we started the. Pa was we were. We were or stout pretty much. I mean we the because you know For for whatever reason for you know we were forced out at the time and You know stating conflict of interest. Which really when you look at. It was like whoa is supposed representative the players. The interest of the players in so as council so obviously hasn't even been fully established yet. So it's not like but so so. Yeah that was a situation then and then actually now re now during these elections You know novak and myself had been nominated by other players. So we didn't even we didn't seek nomination and we just there clearly. There are players. Wanted us there and they put us on the list and and so now this whole this whole thing has come out and and and i just need to speak with novak. I mean when he finishes his. It's just to see what it is had that that we're we're going to do the situation but But obviously this is something that that was kinda thrown on us right now because players obviously want us there to to To to represent them in still currently as fully established. It's still is the currently the only platform where you can can represent players at some capacity. You know quite effectively but it is you know however minor of an impact you can have. That is the only area that you can do that. Currently right so So but yeah this is. I mean to be determined. How we're going to handle this right now. We have the all and and go from there but So i'm not gonna make any any statements on that further. Yeah yeah. Because what i'd heard was william novak and at finals was that they were told or he was told..

"Okay what we want to have a say in input and be able to actually affect These decisions so yeah in a nutshell. It wouldn't be considered a union. Then no no. It's not a union In many ways it would act good. Act as you can bet. It's not a union. it's not. It's it's an association legally. It's not actually a deemed a union. So it's an association. So i'm just curious. You explained it to us beautifully might i. But i'm just curious from now like what does that mean really like. Are you going out to like go ahead. So so right now. We're we're obviously. Rome wasn't built in a day as as as the expression goes but right now is we. We are in the middle of of drafting the bylaws which is basically the the the structure in everything written on a contract to how it would actually operate and so the idea is that we're will get the bylaws drafted will gather support from the players and also make key key hires where we actually have Real professionals that are representing just the players best interest so that where be it's lawyers be it You know whoever we need to actually run this organization to give also credibility and so we're really just out the I would say how. Would i put it. We're just really building it right now and getting everybody that we need Also the one of the most important things that we're trying to obviously avoid is is conflict of interest because they atp tennis tour has tremendous conflict of interest right now with everybody from who's on the board It's just it's so intertwined it's like no other sport out there and it's it's unfortunate that it's gotten to this point and needs to be a little bit cleaned up and and unfortunately the reality is and at that it's that it's hurting the players. Think so it's just something something needs to be done and and just kinda had enough of it. I'm amount of principle. And when i see that that things are being run the way they were and and A of times dirty politics and just players were being lied to and brainwashed and assist. It's really not not good so I have to say. That's that's the whole purpose of this. How did you and novak begin. Working together was it something that he approached. You approach him. It's just seems like a really unexpected duo no fence but you know what i mean. No none taken. I'm taking So what happened. Was i was actually when i joined just a little bit of back story. You know I when i had surgery i actually. I'll go even before. I joined the council because i want you know originally wants to see what what is happening. Why are we having all player issues. So many i mean players of constantly complaining about how things running and everything from the revenue share to representation to Just you name it right. So i was like well. What is going on so i joined council and i realized that it was very it was very very broken system and so at that point when i had surgery as well. This is never gonna change. Unless i try to actually do something about this. And and someone's got to do it so i had. I had all this time on my hands. And that's when. I approached the global chair. Norton rose which norton rose is one of the largest law firms in the world. There in Fifty-one different cities across the major cities across the globe. And so i approached the global charities..

"Mom's been fortunate. Vitamins down my throat. And i was four. And i've only just realized there's actually benefit too. I think last year. I was like this is actually doing something much checking growing other off court news. You've been working on. Tell us about the player professional while messed up players. Yes let's see your tennis players associative here. That's waste new there. That launched an aug. Your huge part of this. It's been in the news recently because of different moving parts. We don't really understand everything. Can you give us your take on what it is and what the goal is. And what's happening now. Yes so so basically. The pta is something that novak Your kitchen i started It's it's i mean the whole there so much information out there. That's like wrong wrongly. it's just there's a lot of politics in. it's you know it is what it is. But the whole purpose of the is strictly to. I like organize and unite the players and and and have representation and be represented in a proper way where we actually have the ability to impact major decisions that are made that affect our livelihoods and lives right so Most other major sports have an association that that that represents solely the the players best interests and then they're able to go with this sociation towards the let's say. Nhl and negotiate with with league and the business partners. You know you come to the table. You have one side. You have another. You come to compromise you make a good and a business Agreements and move forward and tennis. We really don't have that like we. We we really don't for for those who don't know is is the is the way the bylaws are written like It is basically we have the tournaments and we have the players side and it's fifty fifty except The players actually have no way of of Affecting any any decisions that are made so. It's quite complicated. We'll get into all the all the details of the bylaws adp but basically the whole point of the pta's Unite the players and be able to actually have a say in in in the tour and in our livelihoods and how transparency with with You know the tournaments. How they're running the you know. The the financials data tickets everything. We basically don't don't have any information tournaments don't need to provide anything and donate to have you know there's the donate to be transparent at all. And that's not a business partnership and especially when we're the you know what the products where people come and pay pay money to watch watch the players play and So it's nothing Confrontation not here to be confrontational at all. It's strictly just you know almost like a democratic principle like well..

I'll i'll be looking at life differently for the rest of my career so definitely learned a lot during that period there when i had my surgery my break pass. It's of like when fetter had that knee surgery and came back on the australian open. Same pretty much okay so off court ventures one of them is you co founded a company that is a mushroom supplement called kada. They'll tell us about that because we're intrigued and unfamiliar with mushrooms. Yeah so it's It's not the magic mushroom That you know a lot of people have asked me. Mass asked me that question. All we don't what is it that magic we know. It's it's it's basically a functional. Mushrooms are superfood so eleven of the top. Fifty superfoods in the world are actually functional mushrooms. so you know right she Chug online's are four of those eleven. Which we put into our first product launches a cocoa powder and bassam super impressive Benefits both mental and physical. And actually my my. My nutritionist had recommended that i start take in mushroom supplements To help with my recovery process just in anti inflammatory anti stress. So many at this job has one most powerful antioxidants in the world so amazing benefits and i start taking them at around the same time. One of my really close friends will brought this idea for to me. And i was just kind of you know. It was a little bit ironic that i was started taking. You know mushrooms supplements and i was really really passionate about it into it. Really believe that It's been a part of my morning routine ever since i. I remember twenty four pounds lauck. Yeah i couldn't believe it okay but you still had back surgery so it's a good excuse. Yeah and i also made actually made a conscious decision. Varsha is fresh from a final run in sofia to wrap up his twenty twenty season which saw him get up to number sixty one in the rankings. The thirty year old canadian has been ranked as high as number twenty four back in twenty fourteen. Which happens to be the year he won. The wimbledon doubles title with jack sock. We talk about how his back surgery and time off actually changed his career for the better and how he got involved in the mushroom supplement called hickory and most of all we talk about the p. t. p. a. the professional tennis players association. "So <Speech_Male> And if you're <Speech_Male> still motivated <Speech_Male> If you <Speech_Male> still love tennis <Speech_Male> and you still WANNA play tennis. <Speech_Male> I think that's what it comes down <Speech_Male> to. You know. Maybe some <Speech_Male> some players are <Speech_Male> are nearing the end of <Speech_Male> their careers and and <Speech_Male> want <Speech_Male> to transition. Salih <Speech_Male> out of it and they'll be a little <Speech_Male> bit less motivated <Speech_Male> to come back strong. <Speech_Male> I'm <Speech_Male> twenty nine years old and <Silence> I still have <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> many years left <Speech_Male> in this sport. Hopefully <Speech_Male> so <Speech_Male> I know motivation. <Speech_Male> Lack <Speech_Male> of motivation won't be <Speech_Male> Won't <SpeakerChange> be an issue for <Speech_Male> me right. <Speech_Male> No that's a really <Speech_Male> good point that players <Speech_Male> like yourself who've had <Speech_Male> some injury problems <Silence> have have had <Speech_Male> some <Speech_Male> semblance of this experience <Speech_Male> before <Speech_Male> but <Speech_Male> this I'm <Speech_Male> thank you for your time. <Speech_Male> This was great <Speech_Male> it's You <Speech_Male> know in enjoy Stanley <Speech_Male> Park enjoy cooking <Speech_Male> but I hope <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> I hope we see you <Speech_Male> back out there. "But there's a lot of confusion while was a necessary you know and then obviously within just a couple of days It turned out that they had some pretty good foresight and and made the right call because it was an absolute It was absolute chaos. Pretty much just days after days after they made that announcement and at the time when they made it you know it was just you know it was just kind of starting up and I think I think you know Europe was obviously already in in in In a really tough situation but maybe not as much North America but but that escalated so quickly and I was right call so I was. I was there I stayed there. Forbid was trying to figure out what was going to do and then when when things really started to get worse I just tried to pretty much just book at home and try to make it up Up Up to Canada to be close close to my parents. I'm obviously I haven't seen my parents. Don't intend to but but just being close to my family and I mean I'm guessing tennis out of the question. I mean somebody wrote to me. And they said well. I don't understand I mean it's it's social distancing at the same time you're you're touching the same ball of someone on the other side of the net and it sounds like hitting tennis balls right now. Just isn't something that's in your in your thought process. No no I haven't hit. I'm hit a ball since I don't know win. The next one will be in the you know for now. It's just it's just really running outside away from from people and and then just doing some up in in in the apartment and not sure when when will be hitting the courts. So they'll be you know it's a good question not not can't answer you You joke joke about your cooking but but seriously what what are you. Doing for? Nutrition is pretty critical to every professional athlete. What are you? What are you doing bud eating? Yeah I one of the first things I did when I got here as I went to the supermarket and and Just stocked up on a bunch of groceries than just filled up my fridge and hopefully it lost me a few weeks and and just Yeah I mean I. I've never never cook. I have no idea what I'm doing. I probably bought like the most random grocery list of Alzheimer's walk through to the supermarket is kind of like beans with Pasta. And I'm like what am I doing here so I just kind of took whatever I saw that I wouldn't mind eating now. Have to kind of figure out the formula. Love making a a proper meal but but Yeah it's it's it's also in times when I'm taking time off I I also tend to binge a little bit on. I don't have to be careful because I don't want to gain too much weight right so God but I'm trying to try and eat healthy but it's not easy. You know at the same time my wife boy said if you can read you can cook. So I think it'd be on Internet now well Yeah I mean I think I think honestly I think it's really interesting to see what the mentality of athletes are and I think one thing we're realizing is we're all in the same boat here whether you're a top tennis player or you're an NBA player or you're the woman at the Nail Salon on my block. Who isn't sure when she's going to go back to work? I feel like there's something Sort of very humbling. That we're all we're all in this together. Sounds like you too. Yeah absolutely I mean every every every profession is it. It's all relative right. I think everybody everybody's innocent affects everyone negative except some are just more. Are you know have a more stable unfortunate position? Where they have. They're able to obviously deal with this In an easier more comfortable way I think. That's that's consistent through all industries and jobs and every everything right so so But tennis is no different but like I said. I'm I'm pretty fortunate. I'm not You know that that I have had what I need. What's been the interaction? I think Diego Schwartzman. Someone had tweeted out something about a a whatsapp group among the top hundred players. What's been your interaction among your colleagues. Yeah we have a yeah. We have a big group That actually I started when when we're doing this Kind of trying to unify the players a little bit in have communication Amongst the all the players so it's actually a good outlet for us to kind of stay to stay together communicate well and and you know whenever there's an update I I'll throw it in the group so that everybody kind of is informed knows what's going on we also exchange our opinions and ideas and and recently you know since the since the cancellation of wells. It was a really good. It was very useful that we could all communicate on the on the phone and I think it's it's an unprecedented group chat. We've never had you know. We've never had this kind of communication amongst the players were were not this unified someone. I asked a another player. He said if if nothing else he got some good binge-watching recommendations out of it so You you've got to service it I I feel a little silly talking Tennis politics at a time of crisis but You we all know about the news of the French Open. Yeah we don't. We don't even have to go here if you don't want you tweeted about it. you're sort of You've been very outspoken about political issues in the past the ANYWA throat. Yes sure I mean I I it got a little bit misconstrued like I think some people were were were thinking that I was upset that they that they had changed. Change the date due to the virus but that that wasn't the case at all I was Obviously I was I mean I was referring to to their locker communication Enrolling girls came out. And and you know rather than working together with the tour which which you know in time like this. The whole world is coming together. I mean everybody. This is what we're trying to help each other out all around and they basically just went completely the other direction on that that On that you know basic principle of of Communicating and and. You know treating the tour as a whole in as as a tennis family which which you know I know. I'm pretty sure the whole tennis role didn't appreciate that they that they just Disregarded any any any other events or or players or or You know the management and it it F and W T and the other grand slams and they just changed their dates because Because they just wanted to grab that spot in the calendar before it was discussed on which tournaments would would go there if the virus Kind of Slowdown by then and tennis starts up which is still uncertain so I think it was more more in the in the process in which they had gone about which which which. Obviously I wasn't very happy with and the whole tennis. World was pretty surprised by by their move what I mean the the response. I suppose. Listen we're trying to run event here where the French Open. We're GONNA put fifty million dollars of prize money out there. What's the problem? What's what what would I do that. Well well the problem is is that you know we need to function. We need a tour. That's functional we. We can have you know anarchy we. I mean we can't have. We can't have every tournament going rogue because then suddenly in a Wimbledon say okay like I'm going to go here and then US Open's GonNa say okay. I'm GonNa go here and then you know. And then they're gonna go to week where there's a masters event because they're a grand slam and then suddenly masters events going to be in a tough spot. I mean it's just. The tennis tour is is supposed to collaborate and work together and make agreements to to make it work for everybody. I think it's more it's not. It's not about the money. And it's not a in this case. It's about the principle of of Of just collaboration and communication right. It's like if you're if you're in a working environment you're going to your office and and you know and and there's zero. Communications only have three or four people reporters working on the same story. And then you know what I mean. It's just. It's just not a very good analogy. I don't know but but it's just it's more just Out of the principle of the lack of communication and respect for for the rest of the tennis tour More than it than anything. Obviously you know it was. It was inevitable that you were going to have to change. The date. Says I mean the France is going through an extremely tough time as are many other countries and and much of the world but but You know there was another way to go about it rather than Just making a pretty selfish decision. You're saying it sounds like everybody was blindsided. And everyone except for Robin Dot was blindsided here. Yeah that's what I heard. Yeah I mean I. I read that online as well that they gave him a call and which They either do things differently. I guess Wrong girl just kind of they don't have a playbook they just go by whatever they WANNA do and okay. You can respect that. Everybody has their their thing. But then don't be part of the calendar or don't be part of the ATP or the is the Grand Slam circuit or whatever. But you know if they have a they have a contract with with the ADP and they have an agreement with ADP the respect that they can't just go great that's kind of the essence of of business and relationships and so But yeah nobody knew about it. I heard I mean people have been talking a lot about how this impacts Labor Cup but would people aren't talking about as much as this is really an impact. The women's swing and China and China. Some level sort of propping up the. Wpa Two right now. Do you think I mean I duNno. It's twenty four hours in but do you think some players are going to not play the French Open. Out of protest I I don't think I would be surprised if some players didn't play and then most and then a lot of players daily. I feel like it's going to be everyone's GonNa play or nobody's GonNa play I kind of feel like Just because it is a grand slam it is a prestigious events and and even though they you know didn't in my opinion Handle the situation the way they should have doesn't take away the fact that they're still one of the four biggest events in the world so I think it really depends on how the eighteen and WTO respond right now. I think that that will be telling in terms of You know which blares are playing or not playing because You know as you said is really affects some some really big events that are on around that time because they know they have you know they know they have the the power they know their their Grand Slam and they know that that players are GonNa WanNa play there because of points and prize money and prestige so We'll we'll see what comes of it but But for sure would have been nice that everybody gotten in one room and had a constructive conversation and obviously we. You know there was no nobody would want you know French. Open to be cancelled if they don't want to cancel if they WANNA reschedule. Then that's in the best interest of the whole the tennis tour. Everybody wants to the Grand Slams to go on so it just there should have been more communication. I've got to I'm GONNA lead the witness here but I I'm guessing. The events of the last. Few weeks have not chilled. Your Enthusiasm for unionization and more player. Unity I'm guessing Chilling Affect yes. I know definitely not I mean again. It's it's just Just under the principle I mean we just. I think you know the tennis store. The tournaments players. It should be a business partnership because I mean it is right. You have the tournaments in the players and ATP is fifty fifty but but we don't we don't have the proper representation we don't. We're not unionized. The way the other sports are nuts because of You know certain circumstances ten being very global sport and individual sport with many many different language barriers and on obviously the union laws between different countries. So it's not easy but the the only you know the only the the advantage of the union is that that we just have some some leverage in negotiation and make it kind of make it a negotiation rather than just taking. What what we what we get in terms of terms of You know everything prizemoney points schedule just would be nice to have Be TO BE UNIFIED for sure. Let let me ask you one more question which I think this is such. There's this is completely unprecedented. I mean nobody predicted this. There's no historical analogy. We can make but athletes have their career sometimes stalled for different reasons for injuries or suspensions or personal reasons and some athletes. Come off that. And they're doubly fired up to really make a dent and they've had this blast perspective and it really sort of infuses them in another athlete sometimes comeback from injuries in their never. Quite the same. How how do you go about using this time off to really use a sort of rocket fuel and to really resume you? You were playing at a very high level before this. How do you come off this strong? And NOT DEFEATED IN DEPLETED. Well I think I think that this You're either built in your. It's not I mean I. I don't know I'm just. I think that you know you're either competitive by nature and embiid by nature in in if you're still intending to play tennis during the after this break then I feel like that should be enough to to motivate you to to come back strong. If that's you know the kind of character that that you you have but So I mean that was the case for me when I obviously had surgery and I came back with a whole new perspective on my life on on the sport and and then suddenly I was. I was healthy and I didn't have any pains anywhere. started moving Extremely well and I got fed and so I think I think you know getting in terms of getting staying motivated during a time like this coming back in good shape I think it just really Just depends on your personality and character I think you know.

"Is doing well. Staying safe washing hands and adjusting to this. New Reality seems seems strange. That less than two weeks ago we were talking about at Indian Wells and about the usual tennis questions. And now we're obviously in a much different reality. I do think it's important that we stick to some routines and keep some sense of normal so I did want to keep these podcasts. Going and this week we talked to Varsha Pospisil I wanted to get an athlete perspective. Like so many people in the world and athletes job has suddenly been disrupted and income has stopped coming in competition stopped. They're no longer going to their equivalent of the office and they're trying to figure out what comes next and volcanic was great. He is in western Canada right now. In like so many of us is in this cosmic holding pattern. So we talk about what? It's like for an athlete. Their career suspended and we talk a little bit about tennis politics. As well of course we would not even a global pandemic caused tennis to unite quite the contrary on Tuesday. We got news at the French Open was unilaterally grabbing these dates in late September early October for a hopeful reschedule the twenty twenty French Open This caused quite a bit of consternation in tennis land. We talk about that in a number of other topics so Nice conversation with one of the good guys. Here's Varsha Hospital. We are recording this Wednesday about noon. East Coast time. I appreciate you doing this. Yeah this is strange strange times and I figured we. Can you know you can always talk tennis? Politics Plum. I'm more interested in what life is like for you. How how are you doing? What are you doing? I'm doing okay. I'm while I've I've back to Canada about four five days ago. Came from from southern California. Were Indian Wells and Sonam in isolation basically. I'm I'm staying home. I'm trying to learn how to cook which is not going so well. I'm trying not to go out. And obviously you know it's really important to be to be responsible now especially as the spire spreads and Um so I just Especially for the older population. I mean that's that's the the biggest risk right so yeah very very strange times and very talk times. I mean this is You know not fun right now. That's for sure and it's Think the world's in top place right now in your in Vancouver right yeah. I'm I'm in Vancouver. Yeah to kid. Can you go you know run around Stanley Park? Can you do anything to stay in shape? Yeah you can. I mean there's It's a it's a recommended quarantine at the time at this time. It's not a mandatory one. Ah so you can go outside But I mean I'm only going outside to work to run in the in the park and try not to to make contact with anybody. Obviously because I think right now I said You know until we fully understand this this thing. It's it's important to to kind of make sure you distance yourself from from people so I'm spending about ninety percent of the time it indoors or more I should say and And trying to do work out here as well have been doing some like you know. Sit Bodyweight stuff. Sit ups push ups the in these kinds of basic things to do when I was a kid so Yeah just trying to do what I can. But which is talk. When you're you're indoors all day. Do you have a time in your head? What are you thinking? I anticipate coming back in time. And how is this playing out mentally? No I'm I'm You know I don't think anybody really knows how long it will take. I mean I think it's pretty safe to say that the next couple of months. Are you know pretty much a scratch in terms of in terms of the tennis tour? I'm not sure Novica announcements even unofficially. I'm not sure but I don't see. Don't see that being the case and obviously now we saw the rolling girls changed their dates. So you know clearly they're not expecting Think say improve very quickly either and But at the same time we never know but I'll be very surprised if if if there were any tournament. Thanks next to two months or three months so it sounds like this is as much a mental challenge of physical. One you can. You can get yourself back and playing shape but if you don't know when that next event is gonNA come. It must be hard to mental mentally account for a comeback. Yes it is and and the other thing is I mean it. Yeah it definitely is because we're not we're not used to training are playing without A target in mind in terms of the next competition is either. You're you're not trading because you're injured and then when when you're you know Healed up then you have an idea of when you want to start playing in your training for that in mind. So it motivates you and your training with a purpose right now you kinda feel You know that a anything we do right now could be completely pointless so it's also not a bad time to rest body because the tennis season is so long and we never really get time to rest to rest which is which is also important right so I mean that's that's one thing I'm not really intending are pushing my body too much next couple of weeks for sure and and even so. I'm not quite sure when when it'll be time to push the body. I'll just try to stay. You know relatively Relatively good shape just to be more more so just to be ready to handle handle workload once. It's time to start training so I don't think I'll know that for a while. I wonder if if you guys don't say this is. This is now a sport where you play into your late thirties. Maybe it's a disguised. Blessing that at age twenty nine you. You've got this three month period of inactivity the two up yeah. I mean yeah well in terms of yeah in terms of You know arrests for the body. It's definitely like a good thing To to to have a bit of a break obviously You know nobody. You know you don't want it to be in circumstances like this. You don't want a virus to be the reason you know a global threat to be a reason for that but but But of course yeah there are some some things you can some positives of some things you can take for sure. But but overall it's Not Idealistic Get can I ask you about about income about finances? We all saw that Jovovich and the doll and they deserve every penny they. They've made as far as I'm concerned but some players have the means to To whether this no problem but how our players getting through this with no income source while I mean I. I've been very fortunate. I mean I'm I'm in a difference You know a little bit different position where I've I've been able to save up some money over. The years had good results. So so I'm I'm just in a very fortunate state where where you know. This doesn't necessarily impact me in a very big way. So I'm I'm very lucky in but that's not the case with as you can see with most most people in the world in general and and in Tennessee as well as tough because You know if you're you're not a consistent let's say top fifty player big results or had money saved up. Then you know the players that are outside of the top hundred there there You know I'm sure they're in very very difficult situations. And not just a unfortunate reality and and I'm not really sure what what The tour will will do if they will do anything. I'm pretty sure they're they're working on solutions right now to help those with with lower incomes. help them financially. Because I think you know they're obviously the ones that that that probably needed needed. Most you know having said that obviously affect everybody right suddenly you don't have income and your expenses are always high even though maybe now they're not so much but but Yeah I mean I think I think it affects the tennis world just as much as as It affects you. Don't a lot of a lot of other industries obviously minus atop the top ranks players. That have made a lot of money. Yeah exactly and you're you're right. We should point Mrs something that Every Marriott hotels in every restaurant in the world everyone is wrestling with the same issue at some level I mean have you heard our players sticking with their coaching arrangements? I mean are. You're not probably expenses. But they're still expensive for players. Have you heard about tennis players? Making adjustments there no haven't really Other than just what will you know what I'm doing personally? I haven't really You know I'm not really aware of what what's been going on with the other players and their arrangements in the coaching. I mean it's I think I think It's just kind of a tough tough time. Where were suddenly you know even coaches and physios and fitness trainers were were? Nobody's making any in common But you know I I think it depends on the the agreements that that each player has with their teams individually. So it's I think there's still a lot of question marks that I think will be answered next couple of weeks. I think once you know maybe there's a bigger delay announced for now. The official announcement is still just six weeks of the tour being cancelled which like. I said. We'll be much more on it. I think once not announcement comes up. And maybe maybe there'll be some changes In around the you know the player often and compensation not sure it's a very interesting and Yeah I think we're just kind of thinking on our feet day-to-day and taking it as it comes right now. I mean a week ago. They that announcement came out about a six week. Delay and I think everybody was fairly shocked. And now boy if we get back out there in six weeks it'll be. It'll be a tremendous achievement. For for all of us. I never mind tennis. That will I think get off the very opportunistic. Get back to your actually totally. I mean I remember. Yeah when the announcement I came you know when Indian Wells was cancelled obviously Things have just EXCO. It's so much so quickly since then that that I mean it's it's. It's pretty incredible that week ago. We all surprised by the announcement. The whole tennis world in all the players were like. Oh Wow that's you know that's crazy like that's that's incredible and then L. Let's go on and then you know a few days later. There's just so many cases around North America and accelerated such such a speed that now it just seems unconceivable. That even be any tennis for for next while so Yeah interesting times and and I don't think six weeks is realistic right now. So sure so the innate wrote to me and I said could you imagine if Indian Wells had tried to continue Even if it was behind closed doors if they hit insisted that we were going to try and play through this and seventy two hours in there were travel bans for Europeans. And there were this. This rapid spread If you feel like you guys said the players in particular seem to be On this very early that This this this was no joke and everybody had to get home but That was a controversial decision. Sunday night when Indian Wells canceled in twenty four hours later That that decision was validated. you were you were in the desert you were. You had already gotten to Indian Wells. Yeah I was in the desert I was in desert actually got there. The day got cancelled. My whole team flew in the day got cancelled and and Yeah like I said. We were pretty shocked. Then they clearly has some you know. GotTa give them credit. Because I think there was quite a bit of at the time you know quite a bit of opposition to to their decision. I guess or not not even opposition. I think everybody understood it. Everybody thought it made sense..

"My whole team flew in the day got cancelled and and Yeah like I said. We were pretty shocked. Then they clearly has some you know. GotTa give them credit. Because I think there was quite a bit of at the time you know quite a bit of opposition to to their decision. I guess or not not even opposition. I think everybody understood it. Everybody thought it made sense. But there's a lot of confusion while was a necessary you know and then obviously within just a couple of days It turned out that they had some pretty good foresight and and made the right call because it was an absolute It was absolute chaos. You're saying you it sounds like everybody was blindsided. I feel like it's going to be everyone's GonNa play or nobody's GonNa play I kind.

"Everyone is doing well. Yeah it is and and the other thing is I mean it. We all saw that joke of each and the doll and they deserve every penny they. Most you know having said that obviously affect everybody race suddenly you don't have income and your expenses are always high even though maybe now they're not so much but but Yeah I mean I think I think it affects the tennis world just as much as as It affects you. So sure so as an agent wrote to me and I said could you imagine if Indian Wells had tried to continue Even if it was behind closed doors if they hit insisted that we were going to try and play through this and seventy two hours in there were travel bans for Europeans. The day got cancelled..
