Ah new movie That may be the first movie to be shown in theaters new movie in five months. You know it's being released. Well, first of all, it's hard to say how much of it is going to be a real appreciation for this movie and how much of it people need a sense have need for distraction and diversion. One thing to say about can it is and I haven't seen it. But the reviews are in, you know, the title was a palindrome back and forth. It says the same thing. And that's sort of the theme of the film Can it is Christopher Nolan directed science fiction spy thriller with John David Washington as a CIA agent, Robert Pattinson is his handler, and they're trying to prevent World War three or something being coordinated by a Russian oligarch. Played by Kenneth Blanik. He's using something called Time inversion, in which the future is attacking us with bullets cycle backwards. Whatever That means. Again. The variety review in Variety magazine called Grandiose and enjoyable, escapist spectacle. But, you know, they said, it's convoluted and more wide than deep. But then there's a publication called The Guardian. They call it a gut, and they give it two out of five stars and say it's not worth braving a trip to the big screen of say, the plot is tired of the actual scenes. But the action thing for well done and you see some of these action seeds backward and forward as part of the theme of the film, they say the world is Ready for a blockbuster. But can it isn't it? But it is still opening Tuesday overseas and September 3rd here as theaters begin to experiment with being open after the shutdown. I am she expects for 100 of its 600 noticed to be showing it or to be open, and that includes the one here in Milwaukee or what I should say, and Marcus hopes to have its 91 theaters in operation. By that time, they have 1100 screens over on seventh. States. You know, if this works, it's a game changer. You know, everyone in the industry is watching, you know, on tap Wonder Woman, and I told her James Bond in November. Spielberg's West Side story in December, you know, but in my opinion, what is really needed for the survival of the movie industry is so fundamental reassessment of the weight comes or exhibited with safety being the priority have already been reported the haphazard way Some theaters are practicing. Social distance. I'm saying in masks and don't forget, don't make money from movies. They make it from confession. So you have to ask yourself. Do you really feel comfortable buying from some mask? Teenager started anything. Corentin taught us anything. There's plenty to watch on TV. You know, the epic Mulan is coming to Disney class next month, But, you know, event pictures do demand to be seen in theaters and it makes me wonder whether storytellers they're going to start adapting their escape. Male down there their ambitions. So you know, I guess the final question is whether 10 it will be the next Super spreader event among fan boys going into the theater. Let's hope now. Well, what I'm really waiting for, though, is the next season. Of the crown. Coming back in November. I mean, again, seriously, you can stay at home and watch the crown right eye and I will, too. But it's going to be a really interesting season. For those of us who love to watch royalty. Oh, absolutely, absolutely. Well, it's racking up. Some of the actors will be going who played a character right now on it. Jumps to final Two seasons are covering the 19 nineties in two thousand's The fourth season starts in November, but the final two seasons will include Princess Diana. There's a story thread, including her death in 1997. She's played by an Australian actress called Becky, who is by the way in tenant. And you know the other Casting changes for the future. Episodes include. Imelda Staunton will replace Olivia Coleman, who I Love as the Queen Jonathan Pryce is going to play Prince Philip and the acerbic Princess Margaret is going to be played by Leslie Mandel. But that's in the final two seasons. The next season starts in November, and I can't wait. Heart. What about the Democratic convention? How did they do ratings wise? They were down, but they averaged 20 million viewers on six networks that down about 21%. But don't forget, you know, 2016. It was a big deal when Hillary was nominated as the first woman nominee, so I think there was a lot more eyeballs on it at the time of the top three, of course, MSNBC, CNN and Fox in that order. I expect that to be reversed this week with the Republican Convention by the way, the dam's topped out with 21 points. One million viewers for Biden speech on Thursday. Do you think Trump will duplicate that? This week. Well, you know they're going to be from shot. I Yeah, Hard to say, I'm sure box is going to do very well, you know, And I think the convention is in Charlotte, but it's mostly gonna be virtual they've got they set up a kind of an agenda Monday. Steams Land of promise. Tuesdays is land of opportunity. Melania will speak on Tuesday. Land of Heroes on Wednesday when vice president Pence speaks and land of greatness on Thursday when trumpet Accept the nomination on the South Lawn of the White House. They do have big shoes to fill. As as the Democratic convention was largely regarded as having being successfully stages a virtual event. We'll see how they adapt. All right, Here's something I'm really looking forward to Class Action Park on HBO. What is that? Wow, that looks so fun. Yeah, that's on TV this week. It's August. It's Thursday. Emily like 27, but it's a documentary about the most dangerous water park in America. Remarkably, it was not in Wisconsin Dells in New Jersey. It was it was a theme park so unregulated That it was notorious for causing injuries. There were five deaths in one year about this class action. Part documentary is based on a book by the son of the park's owner, and they're actually speculating about making a TV series out of class action park with. In the meantime, it's going to be a documentary about this unusual I'm park where you risk your life to go in a weird way. I'm pretty Like today when you leave the house, But this was AH, It's kind of remembered finally buy a lot of people from the East Coast who went there. I'm sure what when they had class trips and stuff, But other people went just to experience the thrill of near death. Apparently a class action part August 27 on HBO, Right. Finally, the Biden Harris ABC interview is tonight. Do you think that's going to be anything now? Well, you know, I think this will be the first time that Biden has been a tough press conference here or when it looks like he's been doing a lot of virtual speeches. I'm looking forward to David Muir. Maybe putting putting the pressure on him The actual some serious questions. I hope some. Alright, listen, Dwayne, always a pleasure to have you here. Laverne Cox: Fighting for Trans Lives
"I want to start with your Time magazine cover if that's okay into dozen fourteen year on the cover of time and the headline, said the transgender tipping point. Wow, I wanNA to know if you knew that that's what the headline was going to be. And what your reaction was, it was a cover. Try so I wasn't. One hundred percent sure I be on the cover. They told me it stem news item happened. That was really big that I would be bumped from the cover so I didn't know that the cover. What's happening until I? Think the night before that was happening for sure. I didn't know what the headline would be. The first time I saw the cover, a friend of mine named Precious Davis. Who's a brilliant activist and human beings? She's in Chicago. She texted me a photo of the cover and then it was. The editor of time premiered on like think morning America. One of the morning shows that morning. And then it was and I think that certainly changed my wow, so, what was your reaction to the transgender tipping point part of it? You know it's I, don't it's hard for me to separate my reaction in two thousand fourteen from the subsequent sort of reaction. That community has had to that title. There was so much. Criticism. From my community of that title, and the suggestion of that tipping point and criticism of the way the article was written, and who was excluded in there was a lot of that. I like about my community, and what I appreciate about activists who are on the ground doing the work is that in their honesty they keep us accountable. They keep us pushing to go further to be more inclusive to think differently and harder about who is being left out and what? We're not talking about so it's hard for me to separate my reaction. Of the tipping point moment from. The criticism and the critical interrogation of that moment my engine Mitchell, it's we did a panel for variety magazine. A year ago about Trans Representation in the media. For Trans Actors, and she what she said, is that that moment in two thousand fourteen, with kind of all about Laverne is the way she framed it. And then she said Post Post because we're probably impose moment, even though poses still in the air. It's about all of us. Jin, Richards contended, and I like that because I think it was always my goal, that was very clear in two thousand, fourteen at that moment was not about me and man it was about. About a community that was part was about all the activist who worked for years to create space for me to have that moment on the cover of Time magazine, and so now that is coming to fruition that more of our voices are being elevated and more perspectives and It's taken a lot of pressure me I feel a lot of pressure in two thousand fourteen I gotta tell you reflecting on that moment is. Do you remember the criticism more than the celebration? Of both, they covered with revealed on my birthday, so my birthday now is not only my birthday. Anniversary of me being on the cover of Time magazine, which is pretty dope and I decided that year I said to myself. If I'm going to be on the cover of time, magazine, chiappa Party and so. I wasn't going to be on the cover. If I was bump for any reason I was like well, they could just be a birthday party, and so I had a party that year and Time magazine mistake were so generous that they gave us tons of copies of the magazine and my boyfriend at the time had posters made of the of the magazine as opposed to of my Time magazine, covering my apartment, and I went to my mom, and then we gave one. Away for charity, so we had a party and it was indeed celebration there were tons of Trans People at the Party and some people from orange, new black with the party, and so I have fond memories of the celebration of the moment as well but I think both can exist all about both end that I can be in the celebration, the neck, and also critically effect on the moment

"Three seventeen. And that means we're going to check in with our man Christian TOTO. He of the movie show on Saturdays with Mike Rosen. Also has a fantastic blog called Hollywood in TOTO and Christian. I gotta tell you. I looked at the Oscar nominations, and I felt so woke just for reading the nominations is just like this is like I'm the most woke I've ever been in my life. Just from seeing them all on paper. And then I read your column, and I'm like, we're we're on the same page with this. Yeah. If you think you're woke now, wait till you sleep through the whole ceremony. Look, I don't know about that first of all for the one person out there. He doesn't know what we're talking about woke this symbol symbolizes how conscious you are of the victimhood structure in this country. That's my definition and all of the movies save a star is born which you say has no chance because it's not woken up. Yeah. It wasn't just knee was a pretty veteran. Film critic who writes for variety magazine said, hey, we're living at a time where these these movies have to have a social message. And if they don't they don't Abba chance and a star is born is a very good movie with wonderful performances, but it's not telling us what we need to know. And for that reason as well as other I think it has a very little chance of winning some of the biggest prizes. I think that's a shame. But totally unsurprising because this is not a new phenomenon. But it does feel like this entire batch of say best picture nominees. They all except for stars. They all have a sort of beat you over the head. Social message aspect to them. Yeah. And the one the one that it's that category. But doesn't quite as green book because it is about racial healing. It is about coming together as as human beings. But it's also been deemed not woke enough because there is that racial healing there. There is that I guess putting past our biases and prejudices, and I think for some people in the wo- community. They don't like that. They'd rather kinda dab is divided. And I think the fact that that's more of a healing movie. Little kind of torn on that one. So what are you like in this? I mean, who do you like for the Oscars right now? Well, I mean, there's what I like and what will happen. What happened? I think role model been win best picture which is available right now and Netflix, which is mostly cool except it's a bit of a snore. I think it's one of the most overrated movies the last ten years. Oh, you're kidding me. I mean, every every other critic is calling it a masterpiece. And if you watch I'll be very curious to see wicker thoughts, it ain't that. But I think that one is you're very likely best picture winner in part because it's about a domestic worker helping out a an affluent family in Mexico City, and you know, it's all about sort of the haves, and they have not, and it's you know, to the movies credit. It doesn't hit you over the head with it. But the is there for and it's black and white, and it's directed by a someone who is considered an artist of onto a very good director. No me wrong. But for all those reasons I think that one's going to win. So let me ask a question about vice because I have now granted I have not asked my liberal friends about this movie. But every person that I know this said, it's like a caricature. It's almost a cartoon depiction of not only Dick Cheney but Republicans overall and yet here it is with multiple nominations. What was your take on vice okay? It's not a good movie. You know, listen, I'm a conservative film. Critics could say, well, he's a conservatives agree with it. But there have been some liberal critics who have hammered the film the Daily Beast, which is an increasingly center outlet said it might be one of the worst movies of the year. They pounded that film. And if you look at rotten tomatoes the scored has right now is about sixty four percent, which isn't terrible. But that's not a best picture nominee. Right, right. Yeah. You think eighty ninety those with most of the really good films of any given year fall in that category. So you look advice, and listen the makeup was sensational and Christian bale is unbelievable as Dick Cheney from physical transformation. Right. But other than that. I mean, this is a cartoonish movie it, it's it's funny. The movie opens, and it says, you know, you're too dumb to understand politics. And we're going to show you then you watch the movie itself in the movie itself is brain dead. I mean, really simplistic arguments. No, two sides ever and thinking. Wow, you guys are lecturing us. You don't even have it altogether. So. It's it's a sign of the times that it has many nominations. And that's kind of what I was getting at. I mean, I I can't remember the last time. I watched the Oscars I used to watch it all the time for the dresses, and the and the pageantry in the spectacle. But it's just the more political against the less. I care about any aspect of it. I mean, I just don't, and they don't seem to be getting that the, you know, the the numbers have been down repeatedly year after year and yet they're still not getting it. Do you think they ever will? Or they so insulated, you know, then it doesn't matter in Hollywood what the rest of us rubes out here think they get it. And they don't care. There was a story. I think before last year is war show saying that they could actually track the ratings minute by minute hour by hour when there was a political speech this other ratings dip, that's what the producers told the New York Times. Now, they know that, but they are two or frayed sort of the team behind the Oscar ceremony. They're not gonna tell the Clooney's industry guys and gals. Could you don't just talk about the movies? Because then the outrage would be off the charts. What to do with censorship? So they're kind of stuck in today's actors wanna participate. They wanna use that stage and platform, and they don't care individually at the means the ratings go down. Well, it does mean that I won't be there watching it. Let me ask you this David, I are a little incensed. And I'm gonna use the word incensed that won't you be my neighbor was not nominated for documentary feature. Yeah. I think it has a ninety eight percent fresh on run tomatoes me that every critic on the planet pretty much lump it it made a ton of money for documentary films about twenty two million. That's a lot and I m scratching my head but look at the category. Look at the other the other films in that division. You've got the RPG movie. That's about Ruth Bader. What was I thinking? That's a shoe. And of course, it's going to win, you know, the one I do want to see though is free solo about the guy who who climbed El capitan freestyle. Yeah. I've heard nothing but good things. And that particular categories often heavily politicised. I mean, you know. Yeah. Columbine one one year and inconvenient truth one. So that I'm not surprised to see that happening. Just given the fact that Justice Ginsberg's in frail health, and we're kind of pulling for her. But I think sort of the emotional moment, maybe hers as well, Christian Todo. He writes, a fantastic blog at Hollywood in TOTO dot com, or you can read his work other places too and hear him Saturday mornings with Mike Rosen on the movie show, thanks for the rundown. Christian todo? We'll talk to you, my friend sounds good. No problem. Have a great day. Susan, do you watch the Oscars? Susan just walked in. I actually no I should say I seen. I'd like to see the dresses. That's pretty much it. Yeah. I've been to the Oscars. Have you really? Yeah. Way back wizar- reporter. Reporter. I wouldn't let me and I don't have a kind of a trust like that. And then they put the reporters listened to reporters are in this tent right behind the theater. And then after they everybody wins there little statue. They trot them back. Oh, you got a gaggle. Yeah. Talk to call the gaggle my friends at a gaggle sucks. If you actually want to do an interview, I did it the year that Whoopi Goldberg was the city. Anyway, what's coming up in your news? Now, do you watch.
