Eric and James O'Keefe on What We Can Learn From 'Mr. Jones'
"Welcome back folks. I'm talking to James O'Keefe founder of project veritas, author of the new book American muckraker rethinking journalism for the 21st century. So James, I was just referring to this film mister Jones, which talks about Gareth Jones, a Welsh journalist who sees in Soviet Russia in the Soviet Union in the early 30s. What Stalin is doing, which is evil with a capital E but the other journalists, most notably Walter duranty of The New York Times who won a Pulitzer Prize that's never been rescinded for effectively giving cover to Stalin's genocidal murderous regime. But I thought it's so incredible because what the story of the film shows is how one of these reporters, one of these journalists, Vanessa Kirby's character, initially she's basically said, I believe in this communist utopia. And I'm willing to look the other way for the greater good. She eventually changes. But it struck me that that's where Mary very many American journalists are today. They hate Trump so much or they hate something so much that they're willing to overlook the facts, the story. I mean, the most dramatic example for me was the Hunter Biden laptop. When that story got buried by everybody I thought I just feel like my country is dead. You don't have a country if you don't tell those stories. Well, that's true. And in this book, I write about this idea of in journalism. There's always been a tension between access and autonomy. So what I drew from the movie about Jones movie was a study of the potemkin village, so the guy had access to the Soviet Union, and he was being told these things. And these days, journalists, if not narrative Eric, they tend to relay what they're told by the powerful. They just relay it to you. Okay, here's what The Pentagon says. Here's what Putin is saying. Here's what this guy is saying. Well, that's not really journalism. That's more like public relations. So of course, I can't go to these fraudsters. Hi, I'm James O'Keefe. Tell me all the fraud you're committing. They'll never tell me the truth. So investigative journalism is what you really want. You want, okay, you're told X okay, I'm going to go try to disprove X by finding out why. That's not happening anymore. And the reason is not just politics and narrative, yes, that's some of it. It's also economics. It's expensive and it's difficult to challenge the company line or to challenge the government line. And you burn your access to the government. Right. The Biden administration will punish these

"Disipline necessary to me. But as much as i do like harvey. Shaw just like Seven there had the perfect envy had the perfect reasons and accuracy. The most unnecessary wants me. I agree no same here. And then the only highlight that i wanted to add about this film is that it's the first being being cuban. It's the first major. Hollywood blockbuster shot in cuba since the nineteen fifties. So that was cool. You're a school. Yeah no you like to see. I thought it was stupid but at least a shot in cuba so them can't a beautiful on a gorgeous saw. Been there a few times and then we get to hobson. Shaw which i absolutely love. I think hobson shaw. Is it up there for me to be completely as well. It is extremely entertaining in knows what it is. It doesn't end in knows what it is and not ridiculous way as we're going to get into. What if nine. It's not a parody of itself. It's just knows what it is and it's having a fucking great time with the rock and jason statham together a fantastic day. I've just incredible chemistry together. Sequel and honestly. I don't know if you guys look agree do vanessa. Kirby is fantastic in this. I think she's complained on at us. She is so mad as in this and idris elba. I mean i. I just love everything. He does either solve a can't ever do liceu. Black superman baby This actually does include one of the most ridiculous scenes. I've ever seen in a movie and it still fucking wonderful. And that's the rock helicopter with his fucking bare hands like come on it's wonderful. It's glorious cliff them like a real life that that's again that trump would have fell down the cliff. Yeah no it's true. The only thing. I seeing i'm a big wrestling fan of This elliott's i'm super huge on on wrestling and see what roman reigns today. I wish it would have given him more dialogue in the movie because out. She barely talks but But overall yeah i. I am a huge fan of hobson shot elliot. What about you yemen. Like i mentioned earlier. This is my first Fast anything to see in theaters for the first time and it was worth it because it was as you mentioned knows exactly what it is. It has the the buddy cop back and forth banter between. Hobbs show which is perfectly throwback to the nineties eighties. It has like you mentioned. "Thomas vanderberg for another round twenty eight hundred emerald fennel for promising young woman. A very underrated movie. I knew that plus eighteen hundred lee isaac for minority a plus seven hundred david fincher for manque a plus one thousand and corey zhao for nomad land at minus. Twenty five hundred. Just the fact that nomad land is so beloved. it's one a ton of wars. I think he's got this hands down. I don't disagree with that. I think she's got all the right things. That are gonna make our winter here this this time around best actress. We're going to go ahead. And vanessa kirby piece of woman plus sixteen hundred andhra day. The united states versus billie holiday very underrated performance. People gotta check that out plus five fifty. She was very good at films. Frances mcdormand and noman land plus three fifty viola davis marines black bottom. She was also very good in an excellent film. Plus fifty and carey mulligan promising young women at plus one thirty. This one is a tight race. There are four kennedy that right there with each other. I'm going to lean towards carey mulligan. Her performance was so captivating you talked.

"Something that should have been nominated. Yeah is delroy. Lindo considered would be supporting. Because i know he. He he got snubbed or is he. I think most people are putting them in lead lead. Okay so i would say maybe chadwick boseman for defy bloods because he was shorting actor and so I know he's nominated in the lead Lead acting category. But if there was a time for him you know to be in two categories. He'd definitely deserved that one. So but that was a tough category to be honest. I'm i'm sort of not mad about who got nominated. yeah. I'm glad you said that because i could not pick between four things that i thought it should be nominated so many. I had on my list but chadwick boseman also i didn't have but now that you mention it i think was absolutely fantastic in the five bloods and it's hard to pick between those two performances. Which ones nominated before. So absolutely i'm gonna go with an. I'll mention the other three that i was considering. But i'm going to go with ben mendelsohn for baby teeth Which is a under seen movie. I wish more people saw this movie. And maybe that's why it wasn't nominated at the same time That is part of the reason to nominate. Movies is to get more people to see them. along along the same lines though micheal martin from bloody nose empty pockets which is a very unique interesting different kind movie and absolutely worth getting in front of more people Also brian dennehy in his final performance and driveways which is a excellent little drama with a great performance from him and then the last one not as small of film but if if the point of a best supporting actor award is for a performance that stood out and really kind of became something that everybody paid attention to the film for Robert pattinson the devil all the time which is not the best movie but that performance i think is going to be one of the things. We remember twenty twenty. Yeah yeah that makes sense. So let's move on to best actress in a leading role. We've got viola. Davis for ma rainey's black bottom andrew day for the united states billie holiday vanessa kirby for pieces of a woman. Frances mcdormand nomad land and carey mulligan and promising young woman. What do you think should win. And what will win. I really want should win. Vanessa kirby carey mulligan I mean i think she's probably going to be my whirlwind but or possibly for m kind of torn because france is obviously is one think she went twice. Yeah so that could also be like she. Her performances is amazing in in nomad land. But i just feel a. I don't know vanessa kirby in pieces of a woman like that performance. Talk about making a movie you know. And i think that's the only nomination for that movie. And she's since i've watched her in the crown Like i've always remember watching her. That i like the first scene. She had as Princess margaret. And i were being so captivated by her and like oh my like. She's so good. And i glad that she's getting these roles in like People are acknowledging her and so. I'm very happy that she you know. Given the performance. She did in the movie like i hope she should win. But i feel like it might be carey mulligan because it's one of those things again like she's got a nominated before and hasn't won it could be The time for her. So it's becoming an amy adams situation right right so if if there's a time for her to get it. I think it would be with this movie so she will win. In my opinion. I think vanessa kirby is great pieces of a woman. I just don't like the film that much. I think after that truly amazing opening i think. The phone kind of falters. So that was my main issue with that. But i do think she is She is great in it I think should win is frances mcdormand for nomad lands. I think that she just creates a character. That is its own thing but also fits in so well with all of the real people in the movie. And i just think it's just an amazing performance. And she is just she's the best you know. She's so damn good in everything Will win though. I think it's going to be carey mulligan. also. I think it's her year for this. I think if promising limit doesn't take home anything else. I think it's that yeah. I guess the only the only reason i don't wanna give it to. Francis is because if i felt like i could since she is francis mcdermott. And you know who she is. It's like i felt like. I was watching france's interact with the people if that makes sense like documentary type thing and so it took me out a little bit of it. Not not anything she did but like. It's so good. But i don't know i feel like i was not transport you know like i couldn't just because i know who she is. It's sort of like kind of went against her in my book but obviously very good but yeah so who do you think should have been nominated in this category again. I'm really. I'm like all these all these people that i love her from like Period pieces but i wish rosamund pike would have been nominated for. I care a lot Yeah so i. I loved her performance in. I mean she did win. The golden globe Although the going globe is not the best indicator of who will win for the academy awards But that would have been like my fun nominate nomination in in my book because she deserves to and i know she's got in. I think she's got nominated for. I don't know if it's for pride and prejudice. Or maybe i'm making that up but she should Or gone girl. Maybe but i think she was nominated for ganga. I wanna see she was i. I don't do so much research for the show do i but But yeah scores pundit. I people should just be happy. I'm doing an oscars episode. How about that I i will go with should be nominated. I've got a tie here. I could not choose between the two of them. That is in dire for malcolm marie. Which of course i've mentioned earlier. I'm not sure exactly where falls. But i'm pretty sure it would be for this year's oscars and jessie buckley and i'm thinking of ending things which as we've as we've mentioned that movie just completely ignored here but she is absolutely fantastic. And you know like we've talked about as you're re watching the movie and realizing just what charlie calvin is doing with these characters The way that she is playing that character that you know may or may not be what it seems and there's just so many layers to it and she just pulls it off just flawlessly. She's awesome yeah. I think i'm snapping at myself. Because i remember watching that movie and thinking like both jesse should get nominated. And so yeah. You're i completely agree with that when she was overlooked In award season. And i feel like that could also be just because it was like that mid It was a consumer right that he came out and i feel like pandemic times just made it feel like leading up to the ostrich especially since it's like now in april it was just too much of a lag time maybe to build up the hype and continue it and so yeah i think that's a major snobby. Ira well. Let's move on best actor in a leading role we've got rid amid for sound of metal chadwick boseman from our enemies. Black bottom anthony hopkins for the father. gary oldman for manque and stephen for monari. What do you think should win. What.

Somebody who's her life is sort of falling apart and she gets in a van and hits the road and lives in RV camps and recreational areas taking on you know little seasonal jobs along the way. It zest a very sweet and very thoughtful, touching movie. I think this is going to be the big winner for tonight. You know People love Frances McDormand. I think that this is gonna have a lot of Lot of success at the Golden Globes tonight. It will be up against the trial of the Chicago Seven, which, if Nomad land doesn't win trial of the Chicago Seven is going to win. This is the Aaron Sorkin. The written and directed production about the famous Chicago seven trial that took place in Chicago 50 years ago. Your nominees were best Drama for performances in the dramatic category. For actresses. The nominees are Violet Davis on Drew a day, Vanessa Kirby, Frances McDormand and Carrie Mulligan. For best actors in the drama. The nominees are Riz Um, Ed Chadwick Boseman, Anthony Hopkins. I think the winners are going to be Frances McDormand and I just I don't know how Chadwick Boseman Doesn't win. He's amazing in the movie Ma Rainey's black bottom. But you know the fact that he passed away the young age and nobody knew that he was fighting cancer. I think that probably is going toe play into the Planted the decision making also for best movie, musical or comedy. The nominees are Boer at subsequent movie film Hamilton. When they put together a television version of Hamilton in the put it on Disney. Plus, this got nominated. The motion picture called Music was nominated, as was the comedy with Andy Sandberg, Palm Springs. And the Ryan Murphy directed production. The prom. Which has Meryl Streep and has just AH, whole variety of very talented actors. That's also nominated for best picture as well. I kind of have a feeling that Borat is going to want to ping the winner tonight in the musical or comedy category. For best actress in a motion picture Maria Buckler Cova, who is placed Borat's daughter in Borat. Subsequent movie film Kate Hudson from music. And, uh, Anya Taylor, Joy dominated for the movie called Emma for best performance by an actor in a motion picture, musical or comedy. Sasha Baron Cohen is nominated James Corden from the prom Lin Manuel Miranda from Hamilton Dev Patel for the personal history of David Copperfield and Andy Sandberg. For Palm Springs again. But when a substitute midwife shows up for their home delivery, the birth turns into an unspeakable tragedy. You need to take her. She's blue. Yes. Come on, baby. My baby pieces of a woman is the new Netflix film following the loss of a child, including a legal battle and a broken mother daughter relationship, fumbling as they try to process their grief. Vanessa Kirby plays Martha and on bursting planes her mother, Elizabeth, and they both joined us now welcome to the program. Thank you. Hi, Lily. Um, Vanessa, I'm going to start with you, Um, the home birth scene. It's about 20. Minutes long. It's all filmed in one shot. It shows your character enduring contraction after contraction before you're even fully aware that something is about to go wrong. It is Excruciating to watch. Tell me how you prepared for that. Yeah, I am. It was a bit of a scary one. Just because I have never given birth before myself And you know, I thought If I get a second of this wrong, then the audience will be pulled out. The film on it will feel like a movie version of a birth and So I started watching a Z. Many documents like Heard and again. It felt so edited. It gave me no proper idea of how to do a 30 minute. I'm breaking scene of labor, with all its Physicality and beauty and horror and, you know, all of it is entirety. And then I started writing two obstetricians and one of them allowed me to come and shadow her on the labor ward in north London. And I spent many days with them and one miracle afternoon. A woman came on the ward, and she agreed to let me be there in the room with her while she gave birth to her baby, and it was just not only totally transformed her for me as a person, but There's no way I could have acted it. Had I not had that gift from her. Really? Um And then, of course, this tragedy happens in the film of the baby guys. The medical reasons run clear. Ellen. How does your character step in to try to rectify the situation that ultimately cannot be fixed? Explained who your characters and why that mother daughter relationship is so key. Well, I'm time of his mother. And you know, I feel like I know what it's like for a person to suffer tragedy and what grief is like She's not crying. She's not talking about it. She doesn't grieve the way I would expect her to sew that creates a Barrier. Between us. That we have to work through, and we actually do. By the end of the film, we have gone through an incredible experience together and Are experiencing a new Love board. Something love. Perhaps in our relationship connection, maybe connection to good word. Yes. Um, the thing that struck me watching this is I think we're seeing more stories now that about women. And about these essential experiences that haven't been given. Full sort of cinematic treatment before and I'm wondering, you know, when you read the script? What? What resonated for you? I think that Z Really important statement. You just said in a way and on something I'm really passionate about, actually. And from sort of paid three when I started to read the birth and then you know, page 30. It was still going on. I I knew that it was something special because it suddenly struck me and I I was ashamed to admit I hadn't even really realized that birth is so Infrequently depicted on screen and then he said, then he sort of asked Why Andre this is written by a woman, a woman who has her own experience of losing a baby. And both the birth and her loss of a child comes very much from her own experience, and that's very female experience. And I'm so now really acutely attuned to the many, many colors of female experience that we haven't seen represented on screen and it feels it feels exciting and really important. Ellen. The story was inspired by the real life arrest of Hungarian doctor and midwife who advocated for home births, which are frowned upon their the writer Kata Weber and her husband, the director, Cornell Montreux, So also lost a child. How did these things come into play in the film and in the directing, do you think I think it inspired the film. Carter had made some notes in a notebook and Cornell read it and encouraged her to You know right further and that became a play that they did in Poland, and then Cornell really wanted to make a film of it so I think it's a It's a transformation of a real experience into a lovely piece of art. "Will see new defense drones at work back. Some blacks mean look, you guys many years a lot of times. The doctor who Show has done a Christmas special, and they've been doing Christmas specials pretty much ever since they rebooted the Syriza. It was like the Christmas invasion and they had one was Santa Claus. Several years later, they didn't do it a Christmas this year and then didn't have a Christmas theme, the last several ones that they've done for Christmas as the specials have had a theme, like they said they had You know, they had Santa Claus show up in one so so they will often times have some sort of connection to the holiday because they didn't have a connection to the holiday. I think they did. Just a new year's one on they often will do that when they don't have a season where British TV is a little weird. Where they'll do a season. And then though maybe wait a year or two or three or five and then do another season. Well, doctor, who they did. The last season was last year. On Then they have the Christmas or holiday special and that sort of bridges the gap until you have the new season that comes up. So this is the holiday special for this year. It's got its roots in previous episodes with Jodie Whittaker is the doctor in one of them. You had Christopher North, who, Of course, most people knows Mr Big from the Sex and the City series, a real estate guy and he's up. He's a billionaire, and he's From America, and he was meddling in something that was causing problems in the previous episode. Plus, then they have another previous episode where they bring back the Daleks because the Daleks never die. And if you don't know what the Daleks are those a little salt shaker looking robots. Well, they're cyborgs because they have inside of him a little squiggly, deadly thing that is kind of a helpless Creature, but they make him sometimes a little bit for more formidable. So if you've watched the previous seasons of the Jodi Whitaker Doctor series, then you've got the background, so some of the characters refer to themselves and you're supposed to know who they are, especially the Mr Big Character. But overall, this one is about Somebody in the UK developing essentially these these police drones based on the Daleks design, but of course, because they're Daleks and They never go away. Something goes wrong. And then they, of course, become murdering psychopathic robots. And and that's of course, would you have happened? And, of course, you've got to have that the doctor and her companions help Stop everything. You know what works. It's It's a nice one off Syriza. That's one of things I like about the Christmas episodes is They aren't trying to do a character arc. Necessarily. They're just telling Ah, good, old fashioned doctor whose story on did you know ladies? In the last episode of the last season, she was put it in her cellar jail. But this shows how she gets out of places need to see Jack Harkness again. If you don't know who that is. He's a guy who's showed up all the way back. I think in the first year that They rebooted doctor who in 2005, and he's an immortal character he keeps showing up throughout. He was also critical to Torchwood. And so that's brought up a lot of questions of whether the BBC is going to bring back Torchwood or a version of Torch Wood. You see if it worked, And now now Torchwood goes all the way back to the mid two thousand's where I It's a little bit clunky. Things have gotten a little more sophisticated sense. Torchwood came out, so I'll be curious to see if they do it. And even this doctor who episode the science fiction and the special effects and the look of the show. Is certainly much much better than even some of the stuff. We saw the first couple seasons of the reboot. So I got to say I enjoyed doctor who? The revolution of the Daleks. You can find it online. It aired on New Year's Day on BBC America, but you can find it on a whole bunch of platforms. You can rent it on, like voodoo or Amazon. But I think if you've got BBC America, you can get it through that. You sometimes after the cable subscription If you got a M C plus through something like the Roco channel that will work for you as well. So I'm gonna have to say, Doctor who? The revolution of the Daleks. Totally rocks. Rocks. Absolutely. You're listening to bad guys at the movies with Kevin Car. Let's talk about the next film, which is pieces of a woman.
