The Mystery of Seattle's Windshield Pitting Epidemic of the 1950s

"As red scare paranoia drove industrialization. A postwar boom swept through seattle washington. Local airplane manufacturer boeing employed a new influx of japanese-americans who'd recently been released from internment camps. The city's population grew by twenty percent to accommodate its new residents. Seattle built new housing. Freeways and offices bringing the city into the modern age. Meanwhile the much smaller port city of bellingham transformed into an economic center. Ninety miles north of seattle and fifty miles south of vancouver. It was perfectly situated as a midway. Stop between the two but all. These changes heightened already present anxieties. So it didn't take long for bellingham to become the epicenter of a bizarre mystery in late march. Nineteen fifty four. A few residents noticed small pits and cracks on some car windshields. The damage was minimal but distinct. Each mark was about the size of a dime since these things were too small to come from conventional weapons. Police suspected they were from buckshot. Or bbc's if a bb gun pallid had hit a regular plate of glass like it would break into a thousand tiny shards but windshields of glass. Panes held together with a sheet of thin plastic called safety glass. Even though it see through it won't shatter at least not easily. Is someone shoots a bb gun or a slingshot at safety glass. It would only knicks. The pain leaving tiny pockmarks like the ones bellingham residents noticed since the damage was so minor the police rug off the reports. They figured they were isolated. Incidents of petty vandalism that is until one officer reportedly noticed his own windshields sporting pit. Then it became serious. An investigation was launched. Officials didn't have any hard evidence to help them identify vandal but they could make an educated guess. Who would commit such a crime. Their main suspect was the newest fifties. The rebellious american teenager.

My Friend and I Broke into An Old House and Found A Brain in a Jar

"My friend and i broke into an old house found a brain in a jar. It was still alive damage yes. He told me his place was abandoned out. Like i saw turn my back to the stately. Well kept house. That was very obviously not abandoned. Making me lose whatever nerve. I thought i had just an i. Were what you might call disenfranchised. Youths prospects for the future were pretty bleak and we were pissed about it with things only getting worse for us this year. We decided that we were finally pissed enough to do something about it or at least pissed enough to do something that made us feel like we were doing something about it. I plan was to raid what we believe to be an occupied home. About town's wealthiest resident taking anything of value. We could carry while taryn the place up to send him a message. Ostensibly anyone looking back on it. We will just lashing out with no real reason to believe. One act of petty theft and vandalism will be the impetus for any grey social. Change it more likely the impetus spending the rest of the pandemic imprison never said it was abandoned. I just said it was unoccupied. Jess insisted as he grabbed me by the shoulder. It's guest house where chamberlain keeps any out of town. Guests when his mansion is overflowing with posse. I'm pretty sure chamberlain's gay. Actually i muttered disinterestedly telling my attention back to the house. To see if there was any merit. What he was saying was a squat. Stone tanggula house that looked to me about fifty feet by forty two stories plus an attic and basement that gave it at least four thousand square feet of living space twice that if the attic and basement weren't just for storing wine anti but it was the spacious. Northern Ireland assembly meets after sixth night of unrest

"Edition of the briefing with me. Andrew mueller last night for the sixth consecutive night northern ireland witnessed scenes of the kind of violence likely to prompt considerable agitation in observers with long enough memories. More than fifty. Five police officers are known to have been injured in the last week and considerable damage done to buildings and vehicles. The worst of the most recent disturbances occurred around one of these so-called peace walls which separate nationalist and loyalist communities in west belfast. The northern ireland assembly has been recalled for an emergency session at stormont today on joined with more on this by lord. Peter hain former secretary of state for northern ireland lord as you would know better than most people the good agreement did not end sectarian tension in northern ireland. There has been sporadic tension and violence over the decades since but measured against that scale. How bad is what we're seeing. Now was nothing like as you indicate the level of bombing and assassination and horror at the said. He has also troubles brought to northern ireland. Whistle the terrorism but It is serious and it needs to be addressed not just by northern ireland's leaders who displaying frankly a lack of leadership which is really disturbing but also by trade minister boris johnson and state for northern ireland who've been pretty absent from the scene in northern ireland now full quite a while and especially over this. What's your read of what's behind this because there is always the trap of reading significance which might not exist into what might just be a bunch of board young men looking for trouble. No this is that there are elements of that and they're a variety of other factors but the main problem has arisen over frustration amongst the unionist community the protestant community over the fact that there are checks and controls in for businesses doing trade. With great britain with england scotland or wales across the irish sea northern ireland of course is on an island with the republic of ireland to the cells and also within the united kingdom and within the united kingdom the rest of the united kingdom there are no barriers to trade of any kind between scotland. And or between wales and england for that matter scotland wales but they're on house result of brexit across the irish sea between england scotland and wales to northern ireland for the first time and that is the reason because the type of brexit that boris johnson. The prime minister pursued which was to break any real alignment with the european trade and customs arrangements and to go for at entirely separate of great britain but in order to make sure that the good friday peace process and the stability which has brought since ninety nine hundred was maintained. The irish border had to be kept open. Let's say the border between northern ireland and the republic of ireland to itself as it has been now for decades and has become invisible with all sorts of human activity. Crossing it in their efforts not had the toxic role played a toxic role. Because it's been invisible it did in generations gone by and that's that's also the good if however that's it become the external frontier customs frontier of the european union. Then it could have ignited all those old problems that had beset and an bedeviled northern ireland. So instead what boris johnson agreed to was to keep the border open that men the northern ireland remained in the european union's customs union and it's trading markets but that's Inevitably because the united kingdom was leaving Great britain would be outside those arrangements so they have to be checks across the irish sea between northern ireland and great britain. of course. The prime minister denied this in his normal airy way At the beginning on the unionists and loyalists in particular who some of the most hardline involved feel betrayed. Because he didn't he wasn't straight with them way. Do you save in the causal connection between that dissatisfaction with the post brexit arrangements. And what we've seen in west belfast. Is it possible that there are people who are or were associated with loyalist paramilitarism. Who are leveraging that discontent to cause trouble. Yes there are and they're also criminals amongst them who drug. Traffic is and so on who've presented a police crackdown which has been quite effective in their communities to try and get rid of this drug trafficking problem and bought ignited. Not because of that so much though it's fit into it but also but primarily because suddenly loyalist protestant unionists suddenly found that Country what boris johnson told them. There are actually checks and controls strangling a lot of northern ireland businesses in a mountain of tape and naturally they see that as a break within the united kingdom because which puts northern ireland in a different place from say england scotland or wales and so they feel that their fundamental beliefs in the the union of the united kingdom northern ireland. Being within that is being threatened. And that is what ignites it. There was none of this until that issue suddenly arose around new year because the prime minister frankly say told a lot of porky's on us and didn't level with the unionist community and they suddenly found themselves in this predicament and had created Insecurity and understandable anxiety out of which these other factors criminality usa Vandalism and so on out of which that's fed you mentioned earlier a an absence of leadership both in northern ireland and in the united kingdom what would a constructive response from especially northern irish politicians. At this point look like presumably not like the one We saw her on twitter from arlene foster who went and it is a a term with which you will be familiar. Full water battery Suggesting that the violence will die quote. Take the focus off the real lawbreakers incheon. Fine that's probably not the most helpful into intercession. She could have made at this point. Is it well when you become first minister which is effective northern ireland as she is Although it's an unusual arrangement that she has joins us with the deputy minister. Michelle neil who's a shouldn't fain leader when you reach these positions you've got to speak for the whole of the community promises and president presidents naturally have their own party agendas to follow in their own party members to satisfy in any country in any democratic system. But you're trying to speak for the whole nation and that for the whole nation as well once you assume those positions and what has been disappointing about both of them and especially in recent days. Me aline fosters utterances. She's not adopted that role. She's effective acting as a party politician. A democratic unionist party rather than speaking for the whole of the the the the community across northern ireland and across the religious and political divides that have bedeviled for so many generations. And i think that's the kind of leadership we need. And we have gossips equally across the water London has been virtually silent on northern ireland. Now full rarely ever since David cameron and the conservatives came to power in two thousand ten under make this point on a on a party. Basis is a leave a politician and also it was labor secretary of state for northern ireland. A because it's traditionally been a nonpartisan issue between both the major parties. I make it. Because i'm genuinely an i've being hugely critical of the the absence of of number ten downing street of the prime minister in a way. That's attorney blend. Gordon brown were in vogue. John major's conservative prime minister before them. playing an honest broker role effectively. What they've done is said will not you know the the good friday process the peace settlement that i helped to negotiate in two thousand seven that brought the old enemies to share power together. That that's all done and dusted and therefore we can concentrate on the other pressures of government and that was fatal So we only seen a couple of sentences from the prime minister over the last few days when parts of belfast up in flames and a couple of tweets from the northern ireland secretary of state. Frankly that's not good enough. They should be convening all party. Talks in person to try and resolve these as labor shattered secretary. St louis hague has called for And they should be on the case all the time instead of effectively absence without leave as has been the case over northern ireland now sadly for a number of years lord haein. Thank you as always for joining us. You're listening to the briefing. Here is markle's ailing goffin. With the days of the headlines. Thanks andrew in the serum institute.

California State Lawmakers Introduce Bills to Combat Anti-Asian Hate Crimes

"In anti Asian hate crimes is prompting state lawmakers to stand together in solidarity and take action. KFBK is Aubrey Aquino has more on new bills being introduced to combat this situation. Aubrey tell us what state lawmakers are doing. To address this. We've seen the video, and it is so disturbing these hate crimes against Asian Americans in the state to many of whom are elderly. Ah package of bills has been introduced by the Asian Pacific Legislative Caucus this month to address hate crimes here in the state. San Francisco Assembly member David Chu is co author of a B 5 57, which would require the Department of Justice to create a statewide hotline for reporting hate crimes. And he says this week's $1.4 million carved out in the state's budget to track the hate surge is also progress. We had a resolution of the sword this past week around condemning the anti Asian hate and we had colleagues representing every straight and diversity of our state, who spoke up as Black. So Aubrey, you know, Kristina just talked about how many of us have seen these videos and how disturbing it is. But you know, the question becomes when you see something like this online or you watch your newscast. You wonder? OK, Is this an isolated incident or how prevalent is it and I'm just kind of curious. What did you find out? I asked Assembly member to about that, given the large and diverse population of Asian and Asian American groups here in the Bay Area and the Greater Sacramento region, and he admits it's been shocking. There are incidents being reported all over the country, but data suggests California leads with more than 40% of all anti Asian hate crimes happening here. And he suspects most are in and around the Bay Area, despite all of the strides that we have made is a community that we're seeing so many manifestations of continued discrimination and hate and racism. Manifested in all sorts of ways from name calling and slurs to vandalism, discrimination in retail environment, physical assault and Some instances, murder Q says he is deeply disturbed by the recent murder of an elderly Thai man in his district and beliefs. Officials need to address the uptick in violence to make sure these incidents don't continue and that those responsible are brought to justice. All right, Aubrey, thank you very much. We appreciate that. Well, I know that in the Bay Area, there are groups now offering escort to an elderly specifically, specifically elderly Asian community members not to, you know diminish the importance of this legislation because it is highly important, but you also need to see Changing the way people think. Right? You know, there needs to be a transformation. Absolutely. Yeah, But in the meantime, those folks need to be protected for sure. For sure. 5 50 is the

The next of 1,000 cuts: Hong Kong activists on trial

"Rock. It's a scene. That's becoming ole too familiar in hong kong this week more pro. Democracy activists are on trial before appearing in court. One of the accused lee. Cheuk yan said hong kong's rule of law is deteriorating because he became a in some political him eight other profile figures have been charged with organizing and participating in an unauthorized. The charges stemmed not from hong kong's draconian new national security law but from the protests prior to its introduction in june twenty nine thousand nine millions of hong kongers began taking to the streets. They were opposing and extradition bill but they saw as a grave threat to the territory's delegate independence from the mainland government over months. The demonstrations escalated vandalism and violence were met with tear gas and rubber bullets. This week's training focuses on one particular protest so on august. Eighteen two thousand and nineteen mole than one million. People gathered to protest despite very heavy rain that day. Su lin wong is a china correspondent for the economist and is based in hong kong so the police had granted permission for people to protest in victoria park but they weren't granted permission to march on the streets but because there was so many people showed up inevitably people flowed out but the eight hundred august protests. Actually marks the first tig free weekend in a month so really was extremely peaceful. Compared to many of the protests that had come before it and so if that days protests remained peaceful wire or activists on trial for for being a part of it. They're nine high profile activists who on trial charged with organizing and participating in unauthorized and so they faced penalties of up to five years in jail. It's important to know that they haven't been charged under the national security law which was introduced after up. These protests occurred so the prosecution is accusing these group of defying police. Instructions encouraging crowds to watch and causing traffic disruptions. While the defense doesn't contest the facts that helped to organize and participate in the peaceful assembly. What they're arguing is that. The charges violate a basic right to assembly guaranteed under hong kong law and they are challenging the constitutionality of the polices ability to ban assemblies especially when the protests were directed at the police themselves. And you say that all the defendants are are high profile. Parts of hong kong's democracy movement. Yes so interestingly. This particular case is focused on an older generation of pro-democracy activists in hong kong who are generally considered to be moderate and who believe in trying to change the system from within by for example running for parliament in contrast to a younger generation of protesters who we saw take to the streets in two thousand nine hundred eighteen. So the fact that it's it's this group of older per democracy campaigners indicates the dominant is trying to crush the democracy movement as a whole as opposed to going after particular protesters who a particularly violent the two most high profile defendants in this case. Are martin land. Jimmy lai so muslim is considered the father of the democracy movement in hong kong. He's now eighty two years old. The other high profile figure is jimmy. Lai who is a media tycoon and runs a pro-democracy tabloid in hong kong and his despised by the chinese communist party. And so how do you think this trial will go so two of the nine have pleaded guilty to the charges and the remaining seven have pleaded not guilty to the sentence for the to pleaded. Guilty is expected next month and then the trial for the seven. He pleaded not guilty. Expected to last two weeks and so courts in hong kong still have a relatively high degree of autonomy and as a high standard of evidence it's expected in cases so people hoping that the courts will will still remain as independent as they were known to be prior to the protests as you say targeting these fathers and mothers of democracy in hong kong is quite telling so i think the outlook for democracy in hong kong is extremely grim and while some supporters did rally outside the court on tuesday since the national security law was introduced me last day. Her beam very few protests harshly because of covid restrictions but also because there has been a real layer of fear that is settled across the city. People have been arrested for holding up blank posters and slogans that we heard all the time on the streets in two thousand and nineteen have now being labeled seditious

Parler CEO Is Fired After 'Constant Resistance' Inside The Conservative-Friendly Site

"The former ceo of parter discussing how he was fired. The social media site promoted itself as a forum for free speech. It quickly became a goto site for conspiracy theorists supremacy cysts and some of the people who attacked the united states capitol on january. Sixth parlor is now offline and its former chief executive told. Npr's bobby allen he's out of work since twenty eight twenty-seven-year-old nevada engineer john maids ran the social media site parlor. But here's how he now introduces himself. John mates unemployed unemployed. He says because of a disagreement over free speech. Many of the capital rioters turns parlor to document property. Damage vandalism and other violence to mates. That was a wakeup call to me. It was a clear indication of what could happen. If we didn't change the right things were being done. The realization came too late for parlour since amazon had already terminated its web hosting contract with the company after saying it quote. Systemically failed to police. Violence mates though had a plan parlor would relaunch by banning domestic terrorists and incitements of violence including from the conspiracy theory cunanan. He took his proposal to parlors. Co-founder conservative donor. Rebecca mercer. When i presented my plan to rebecca mercer and one of the other reps. They were silent. So i took that as disagreement. One on one with Seattle's interim police chief

"The Seattle City Council is considering yet another budget cut to the Seattle Police Department a move that I suppose we should not find surprising. It's a preemptive cut of over dollars. This, of course, on top of what was previously cut, and of course, it has implications. Joining me on the line is interim police chief Adrian Diaz. Ideas. Welcome back to the show. Welcome. Thank you for having me. I really appreciate you taking the time. So what is the $5.4 Million cut mean in terms of public safety? Yeah. You know, we have had, you know some cuts last year. At the end of their session, Another $2 million and some of the other additional cuts that they have This 5.4 million is just One of those things that we're trying to just kind of stabilize our efforts and our hiring efforts. We have some other crude costs that come up. We have You know, we've had a lot of people leave our department. So we had to pay additional money out in separation pay. We've had people because we have Ah, younger workforce, eh? So we've had people that go out on pay parental leave. And so this is some of that money that you know can you know, cover those costs, But we've also had, you know, we really tried to focus our efforts because we've lost a lot of sworn officers. Hiring additional civilian positions that conduce you of riot different works from CSOs, our community service officers, crime prevention coordinators. And you know that you know another additional cut with a lot wouldn't Wouldn't allow us to be able to hire for some of those civilian positions that are so desperately needed. So they've also effectively cut your overtime budget. So how does that work? Because you've got a dwindling for she lost What? 197 police officers last year I'm told that the numbers are still going down. You lost about 20 this month. I don't know if that's been confirmed yet, but you know you've had to use over time as a result of that, of course. Also you had a lot of instances of unrest that you were staffing. So what exactly is the plan this year? Yeah. You know, we've we've actually had to make some obviously some some adjustments. You know, when I moved 100 officers back into patrol we created during that same time we created a community response group. That has been able to handle 911 calls but also be able to, you know, work and deal with the demonstrations, some that direct action that has been occurring for the last several months. And that has helped us out immensely having a group or squad or units that are able to, um Be able to respond to that direct action that is actually limit that's actually pared down some of our overtime. But as we see more people leave the department. You do have to figure out ways that you can have personnel, you know, sure that up, and that means that you know if we have this level of direct action occurring, you know, luckily not on a nightly basis, but it's been enough. Where it impacts our ability to go out and do proactive public safety on destroying to recover guns off the street because we've had an all time high when it came to about an all time high, but 28 year high Yes. You know, we've tracked. You know our shots fired. Going up are you know homicides going up and so we've got to figure out how do we get? Our resource is back into just doing police work so we can Get some of these guns off the street when part of the issue is and you know you made a point to discuss this over the weekend is you'll make arrest. Your officers will make arrest and then nothing really happens. And so you kind of got a little bit of Ah, potential fight brewing with Pete Holmes, Seattle City attorney. You announced this new policy that he will actually prosecute the vandalism by some of these anti for groups and other agitators. His office has since come out and said, there's no new policy. It sounds like someone's playing a game of semantics here. So what was your conversation with him like between inauguration night violence that that broke out which you indicated? That's when the conversations started to happen? At least and your press conference? What was the conversation? So you know, I'm not going to speak for homes. What I can say is that e think we can all agree that the actions of the direct direct action of these groups that have you know Been breaking windows and created property damage and assaulting, you know, people, there's no tolerance for it. Um And I do think that you know Pete Holmes had mentioned they not gonna prosecute peaceful protesters. We don't arrest people protest. Yeah, Exact. That is not what our focus is. You know, our focus is literally trying to make sure that people that are committed to property damage. Uh, that we address those issues, you know, right away, and and so you know, and we've we've taken you know some different approaches over the last several Uh, months to try and reduce the confrontation between our officers Because direct action. People are looking for that confrontation. And so you know, we've we've taken a different stands on it. And actually Wednesday, the Wednesday case on Inauguration day he did charge and so I'm grateful for that. "It is overwhelmingly probable that there towards you is actually just that. They're stressed out from the world. So like try to remember that when you come in and you're like oh I feel like I don't fit in again. We'll one you've been away for a while so you need to transition back like that's that's a process over a few days getting back into the GROOVE SORTA thing people getting to you being back and they're stressed out about others. Shed their trust out about their kid. Who has a weird fever that they don't understand the stressed out about the giant liver cysts? That they're dead needs to drain. You know like they have other worries. That aren't you So try so hard. It's going to be so difficult because I can tell from your question that you do interpret people's feelings as being your failings which Yo. I'm glad you're working on that in therapy. Because everybody's bad feelings are not your fault. Dude you doing great man. The that's a big one for me to one thing that maybe you can draw strength from because I can tell you one of those people that really wants to do right by everyone. That's exhausting. I know but maybe you can draw some strength. In the fact that you're leave the fact that you took leave and took some time took time off work to take care of yourself that might have ripple effects that are good for the company that are good for the people. There might be someone struggling on staff that saw you do the work of working with leadership to take time off. Might be like wait. That's an option now. I can do that like this. Might be a really good thing. But your brain's not letting you see the good of the fact that you did something good you know your brain's being pretty mean d right now but try to explore the possibility that Oh man I did something good and progressive and correct for myself and I'm personally choosing to believe that there's someone that noticed that and is taking better care of themselves. I'm I'M GONNA I'm GonNa live in that possibility. The World I said like your job needs you at your best but who cares in the world needs you. You know the world wants you around. We don't even we don't know them which means that they're not important. Yeah we don't we don't care about people we don't know that's us. That's the overwhelming headline here. And I would like to spin a yarn real quick and see if it works. If that's okay do it up do it up. But our last pandemic the Spanish flu was fucking rough and we didn't have the Internet and we did not have modern mental healthcare care and you know people went out of that hugely traumatized and like a mass scale. And I know that that's generational like wars are generational trauma because it's not just people going off to war. Is People coming back and you not having the mental health coverage that they need my hope for this pandemic is that more people will act like the asker. Because you know we can't stop bad shit from happening. We can't I mean you know weird cataclysms are going to happen. Our Planet is alive. There are volcanoes on it plate. Tectonics earthquakes. They're not gonNA stop happening. But the way that we as humanity bounces back from those things can change in. Has You know the fact that my My mental health my therapy I mean you know. Obviously having insurance is almost a rarity in America and the sucks but my therapies free and over zoom right now through my insurance because they're like you know what it sucks right now and we need people to be in therapy so even the most evil of organizations a health insurance company in America who would deny any claim just to not pay out as actually paying for people's therapy because that's how important it is to have a mentally healthy population that can become a community that can help one another so. I cannot overstate how much of a favor you do for the world when you actually take time to recover because once again you can't stop trauma but you can recover from it and if we take that time to grieve. If we take the time to mourn we will end up being society that can be resilient and it can be flexible So ultimately you're a thought leader is what I'm trying to say. Car cuts him off in traffic, and he's one of those road rage dude to won't let it go. Have you ever had a guy like fall you for a while? Yeah. Dude. I had a guy fine me this is years ago in LA. But when I look in the rear view him doing like a gun to his head home. My god. Mike, I'm going to blow your head off and doing the cutthroat. I'm going to kill you signal. Holy sea. Fall me like running red light soon that whole thing doing a quick, right? Turn than him doing you. Eat a follow me. Oh my God. I had something similar like coming home from. I was like. Cut a guy off a little bit on one of those two streets make a left, and I was like I want to get to the right? So I was trying to and I cut him off. And he was behind me screaming and screaming screaming when I'm like driving down the street and LeBron he pulls up alongside me, and I could see out of the corner my screaming, and pointing at me, and then I look over at him. And I just like wave like jokingly like, I don't see it. I don't know what he's talking about. And he's like roll down your window and rolled on went on. I'm like pretending storm. I guess and he's fucking motherfucker. You fucking pussy you motherfucker? You fucking push kick your fucking ass. And I'm like what he's back there you and I'm like joking with him. I don't really wanna fight today. "Similar show to your wolf of like, I would love just to follow twelve people. I'd love to different kinds of people twelve people who voted for Trump Loveday check in with them. Once a week have them to defend everything is normal people, and in twelve people who've never voted I just wanna Kate in their heads. Yeah. I'm curious like what fuck is your head on election day? What are you doing what's in your goddamn head? I really well. I think it's just like if people for some people can't see further than like one inch away from them. And if it's doesn't directly affect them good or bad. It doesn't matter to them who's running the country because to them their life doesn't change either way because of this in Arkansas when I was first talking to her about her platforms. I kind of have pitcher you should really jump on the marijuana bandwagon. You know, and she's in. Many worth think she says that's a little too contentious around here. And I feel like it's gotta be though. Like, you gotta appeal to some redneck his. Yeah. All right. Do want to grow marijuana and sell it. Yeah. And also, it's money. It Nelson care can't figure that out. Taxes for education gives shit about that what marijuana. My gap from their folks like us that. But fucking go for it. Go f- go for marijuana. It's makes money for every state then it gets legal in like it actually is legal there. But the call not going to bore you. But they fight selling and it's just in a quagmire weird. But it's like that's the kind of shit that motivates people like all people like people can't figure out economics. Like, they can't if it's if it's going well for them, they're going to soom, it's because it Trump. So they can't figure that Shiva. Right. And it's like marijuana is. Yes, it's a substance that a lot of people enjoy. But it's also the government saying, you can't your local governments. And you can't have it is against freedom. So maybe you're not pro weed, but you're pro- like we should be allowed to read. For sure on minimum pot crosses the I'll for like Republicans have to be burning. And then on the other on the other end of it. It's like you can't let the government tell you what you can. And can't do according to you to your own belief system and easy tax money tax money, and it's money, and it's like fucking setup where it's being a backwards ass place. Besides all with all that logic there. They're still not selling it. Right. Crazy. Yeah. And that's when you go to that we are in a bubble because I did get scared when I went back there, and that is where I'm from. And I felt I felt like I was in a strange land bummy on like. Wow, people are actually afraid to call themselves Democrats here there frayed to to say, they're supporting Democrats their boss may not be a democrat, and I might affect their job. That's very real to people that that one consideration. How me like let's I said it's like it's easy for you to go vote. But that's not enough. We need to tell other people be a democrat. If you live in a place like that where being a democrat is. Yeah. How how is that going to grow? Yeah. Fuck in band lies. I'll fucking blow up like do pro democratic like Papa vandalism. All right, marijuana trees and all the seminaries. A little Indika plants in all the in all the statues hands so make vandalism sound positive positive today. Somehow, I think a little bit at least or at least. It's negative, right? Rest your knee jerk reaction to it. Right. Is there posit can there'd be a positive side? There is a positive side vandalism. I mean, I'm just saying shed people already know, but you just need people fucking wound up doesn't even need to be in any direction. You just need to get your people lag -fornia atheist stealing vandalism cries putting stuff. Yeah. It's like all those words while this guy's on tape. He's saying I think he literally says this we we can't let minorities run roughshod over our rights or something like that. This is all on YouTube. You could find this. For your. All on my Twitter. And I laid it all out there my whole adventure. But the invention fortunately ins with him winning. I know of registered voters only fifty percent of registered voters voted in that district district thirty five. So like, there's seventy thousand people who can are register so imagine who can but just who are registered like thirty thirty five of those actually voted in of that it became down to he got like fifteen thousand and she got twelve thousand. So there's like a three thousand person difference is that not nauseating. That's all that's one of the most populous populated districts in the state. So it's like people can't get motivated. That's why I'm so depressed is like people can't get motivated to vote in Astle like that out. Right. Because it because it doesn't hurt them directly. Right. Because that's like. They don't get it. But it is like the upper middle class is like, but things are going well for me right now, you know. And it's like when I'm really afraid of is like, even like, I think I had friends I know people in Arkansas who voted for Democrats, but who might not have been motivated to canvas or do calls or really to do what I keep saying. Like, here's what I have to say wish I was famous than people care what I had to say. But I keep saying is you can't just vote yet to get someone else to vote, right? Right. W. Yeah. Double your weight. So you can't feel good at the end of the day. Like, well, I voted I did my part. You got to feel good that. Oh, I got my conservative sister to change your mind, right? Yeah. So that's what you did. And that's how college was perceived movies all the time. Yeah. And that's what you still that way. I don't know if it's still that way. I'm curious how I'd be acting out. Like what I'd be like, you know, what I mean? So let's tie this up in a bow of I went to by the way, we've done now, pranks, confrontations and vandalism. As try of it's useful aggression who. Or outlets for aggression. Whether you find useful or not, but. I tried to put my comedy to us on this election. I went to Little Rock in Conway because there's this politician Jason Raipur, who's just an awful, man. He's he's an evangelical. He is spent he spent years he's been there. I think eight years in office at this point his big projects have been changing the name of the airport taking the Clinton name off of the airport. She hates the Clintons inputting the ten commandments on the state one, and he has succeeded in putting the commandments on the on the state line. And that's something folks that takes years in legislation. It's not just something you snap your finger. And that's what he fought for it comes with. It's a lot to be put forward to be voted on. It's the type of people are scared to vote against right? Look bad and the to their constituents. He put together this whole charity, which is owned charity which got fund. Ding. I won't bore your listeners all of it. But you can see what type of person says he he threatened his constituents. He he disavows anyone who isn't Christian in atheist in particular. And I was watching this. Documentary called meth storm on HBO this year that was about this county in Arkansas this terrible meth problem. This is the saddest I community of ever seen. Found then soccer, which I became good at I thought. In arkansas. And when I was choosing colleges I had the balls the bravado the gumption to when I went from school to school. Meet the soccer coaches of the school. They were recruiting me. This is the days before you to. People didn't know how good you were on a we went to state my team. But we're in Arkansas like Arkansas soccer was way behind what was going on in the northeast like it just didn't compare in. I didn't know that. I'm like I went to fuck in state. I started on my high school, and I went to St. I'm good. And I mean, all these coaches, they thought I was too wouldn't you? It was good. He's like he played his state level ribbons through. And I'm getting recruited at these good good division three for soccer, and including Amherst like the fucking coach gave me a tour of the fields and everything I get their freshman year. I'm like, why am I on the floor with all the football players. All these guys are huge thought. I thought it'd be a soccer players. One of these guys goes, hey, this is like the first day. Let's go down the fields play soccer. I'm like, oh, great. Mike all football players running down the field to play soccer in realize. Oh, they're not football players. Just muscular athletic guys, easily soccer here. What the hell's happening? Why are they body? Checking me never had body checking before and soccer like I never had someone kind of like try to muscle me out pick up in the south like football is. So prominent that it's like, even if you suck at football you play football rather than soccer. Yeah. In awesome. My generation's the first generation play soccer south that makes sense. That makes news all the kids too skinny to play. But anyway, my grandpa was from Germany, my dad's stepdad, so he like us from Berlin. He'd like soccer. He was a soccer player in soccer ref and soccer is huge in our lives like from childhood because most please. Yeah. Yeah. And so I'm trying to find meaning in the vandalism here. But like at that point. I thought it was an athlete's freshman year of college. I think I'm a soccer athlete. I realized two days into this. I'm nowhere near the level of these guys. Like, I'm not playing soccer here. Well, I tried I played in. And then I was on the JV team. Then I was like on the bench for the JV team was like fuck this, right? You played soccer for like a full year full season of JV. Yeah. And I played intermural for years. Once you've got out of that. I'm going to at least still place, right? It intermural had the real soccer players in it too. But but anyway, that kind of took away my masculinity or whatever the woman perceived masculine. Yeah. One thing I was like, okay. I'm I'm trying to analyze myself. Yeah. You're like, that's like, you were self identifying as an athlete, right? And you not a fan of anything being phony. It's like I can't be a phony guy still pretend to be a soccer player. I can't even like continue the sharrad on myself. So now, I have left is. Animal house like. When when we're going through the when the nation was going through the cavenaugh trial. I kept going. There was a whole generation that was fucked up by the movie animal house Vincent of that. Like to be as fun. Is that movie is it teaches you how to be an awful, man. Right. Well, it's it's there's it's very dated in that..

"I had to go to summer camp and next day for a week sleep away camp. So I like woke up my and my parents are working that night. So I was just like staying in my friend's house because the cops brought me home, and my parents weren't home. Of course. Working parents like setting Faisal's be home watching his brothers setting fires and fucking get like go to camp comeback seven days later. I'm so tired from camp and don't wanna face. My dad that silent. My friend's mom drives us home. So I just come home and gone, really tired. And I go to bed it's like three in the afternoon, and I sleep to like eleven AM the next day, and I'm not even sleeping for huge chunks of it. I just don't want to write initiate the next response. And then my dad just comes in and goes wake up and he takes me to the park. And he makes me like stand there and look at it for like twenty every time I go to turn around don't turn around. Stay look at what you did. And it's just like a week later in the field is all black. Fucking like it was like I felt like rabbits. Yeah. I felt like a monster. It was true. It was like a cleared field. It was like baseball. Remember, there's no. Marvin the making of this little quail baby. One lady screaming. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. Yeah. I was fascinated by fire but stealing. Big was stealing street signs was that ever big. We like to challenge of we try. We we planned and schemed with a Taco Bell. There were actual. I don't know if they had that we from their actual taco bells and some of the taco bells and the south L. No, we didn't we scheme to steal that. We didn't pull that off. I don't know if I've told you we were trying to get into the Bill tower of the state capital. And that's the first time I ran into Bill Clinton told you that story. Oh, yeah. We were like twelve or thirteen and the the Arkansas capital like the nation's capital that same kind of dome. And so we're like we gotta get up in the dome and fuck around with the Bill. And we're just walk around losses. We're just walking offices that we're not supposed to be in. And who's in the building trying to get? Yeah. Like we walk up now lying. My get shot. Can we literally walked into Clinton's Oval Office? And he was in there. And he goes are you sandy Besters boy because they knew my their friends of my parents, just like my dad. I'm like, yes, sir. What are you doing in here? Like, we're loved you're looking for the whatever the Clinton. And got recognized by that's awesome. That's. Politics. But yes, I'll world. That's cool. Yeah. That's trespassing story. But like, yeah vandalism. I feel like even in college. That's when you get so drunk and. Like I felt like it was there was always an enemy..

"In the mud while the Doberman, Jim over me. And who knows what was really going on. I'm basically this wall around in the fucking mud. Reads. So is good amount of time. Like, it was at least two hours, I'm running through these fucking backyards trying to get from neighborhood and neighborhood in their farm. There's lots of cop cars, and I see them. I see cop cars, and I hear them, and I'm like holy fucking shit eventually in this apartment complex hiding in this woodpile and like I've sent him fucking new. I can't dislike knock on the go. Walk down a normal street. All right. Yeah. You walk into a seven eleven it'd be like, oh, you're buying a. Roese? Covered him like said fucking. Shit. Like, you're like I blood like when Rambo shows up Like that that smell. small town. Everyone's like, what's with this guy? So then I'm in this would pile and finally a light hits does fuck in spotlight. That's on the car. A cop cars hits the pile. Charles come on. Trolls out. Charles. I have not heard this drunk head. But I think they're looking for some gun Charles. Oh, I thought they're looking for me. I'm not Charles. Meanwhile, you don't. Yeah. You can't connect the story. Right. Right. So I come out, and I'm like who knows what look like come like naked covered in mud. I'm not Charles. You guys are getting back. Commie Charles getting the back of the fucking car. Charles. And that's like my whole mine defense for the first five minutes. Sol's? Only thing. Yeah. We're also looking for a naked guy with a yellow shirt and your fucking Donald Duck in around the neighborhood. That's and begged him to take me downtown to jail rather than home. And he took me home. Oh. Yeah. It's the worst my mom's life, maybe not that. But definitely part I spent with her. At least from what I was around for. I would that was the worst I caused. Jesus christ. That's really funny. That's so is that vandalism skinny dipping I didn't count that. Now that's trespassing which is another sort of harmless victimless crime that kids love where you're like. Oh, we just hang out in the park. We drink in the that was the thing you would just every weekend. Starting in ninth grade eighth grade if you were a little cooler, you just be in one of the parks drinking, hopefully, some older kid. Gotcha guys beer and just drinking till the cop showed up and running away. And then as you went home based on your car fuse getting into whatever shenanigans, and like that was all that was like junior high through high school and that was like every weekend. Once once we found like drinking, the vandalism became less. You know, it was like less about that kind of stuff and more like because I like the big thing, I did was beyond vandalism arson. I like we used to play with what used to shoplift lighters from CVS and then just light shit on fire and put. It out. We thought it was like the fucking. I mean, I don't know what it is. That's not arson. Did you ever light a building or something? What happened was we were fucking. We made like a bomb like a paper bag filled with crab apples and balled up newspaper and be like, so funny. There's this big sand pit at our elementary school. We're in junior high at this point like, oh, no where go now mention school. And it's like, there's a huge sandpit. We should put this bomb in enlighten on fire. Be so cool and it like jump to some dry grass, and we couldn't put it out and the entire like elementary school field because his dry this dry. All catches fire and the fucking name. People are outside of their houses like the houses that bought up against the with hoses and shit. And I I call nine one one I'm like, there's a fire, and I stayed there and just like got in trouble, and it was the fucking worst. And I like stop playing with fire like literally got kind of scared of fire from that point on the rest of my life and fought me up so bad..

"And my saying the right kind of tree. Those those are the ones that are like white on the side, and the you can call people carve their fucking names in the side of these trees, see what you're walking through. A beautiful forest in. It's just like if you're sticking on the trail is just up and down the trail. He loves. Yeah. Yes. A lot of that loves band names. And so and so low so so right. That are fuck so and so or pussy that I'm gonna write the word pussy to a tree. So that whenever I walk past. It could be like, yeah. That was. I wrote on the part of my last summer, drink drinking beer. Yeah. The go road pussy on the Redwood tree because that was a thing in the Redwood north northern California for a while too. I think they had to like figure out like, you know, there's like now rules and people pay attention like, no, no carving in the trees, so many will just carving, and it stays forever. I know trees live forever, and the is hilarious word. But the, you know. J g plus t g is going to grow up the tree and be fucking, right? Thirty feet up. J g get up there just make room for more people to come just keep filling this with fucking scar tissue where you get the right? And then you'll see like something that's Kim to that. But not it's like good vandalism. Like also in Europe. I can't think exactly I've seen this. But seen it several times where you'll be on a bridge, and they put locks on the bridge. We've seen that. Yeah. Yeah. The key. When you get married or something that you do it to like, you're with a partner, there's one in Paris. I saw in a lot of cities. Yeah. Yeah. Looks cool in some places. The city does not want you to do it. They'll even say they'll have special locks to buy a special place for you to do it and people like fuck that put the locks. That's a noise for you to break that that's exciting to me. So that's the kind of thing where it's kind of beautiful in a way, even though it's vandalism right? But yeah. Because that's like symbolic. Yeah. Like stealing stealing things was like a big form of like. And I guess. Because there's like stealing funny things to have like if you had like like we like one of the things, and you can see a pattern here as we used to. We didn't have any political beliefs growing up. So we just would steal all the politicians and put them on like one person's house like where we knew a teacher. Sixty on the front lawn, a guest who board or whatever. But then college would be so funny to like come back to your dorm. It's like is that a cafeteria table and six chairs, you're like? Yup. It's like when the as finding we're gonna get in trouble where like, Yup. It's just funny to us to have that for asking your male energy out of like, I got to prove myself. It's gonna steal this table. That's impossible to steal someone said like all you wanna do in like is like fighting fuck, and you can't do either. So you just like. That is it though because I wasn't doing either. For the most part, and you do just have the. I'm not saying excuses it, but no problem energies starting in high school. I feel like a lot of kids do guys, and you know, all across all genders. It's just like how it's acted out. I think yeah. I think it's traditionally comes out and boys is like vandalism in rough housing and one thing we still was the whole the hulkamania hulk life-size Hoke cardboard cutouts that were in seven eleven. Oh, yes. Auf in you totems, and a special case there is like a a summer when they're all out. And that was our it was so funny because they would end up like, Mike our closet..

"That's. In college. We were just one second away from like ruining our own possessions. You know, what I mean like we're always one second away from a dude one of my roommates in college, and I'm not gonna name him because he fucking like sophomore years school. Well, first of all software, your schools, somebody broke a fucking sprinkler head in the hallway as a prank while we were all like at class, and we woke up in the entire first floor of this dorm was flooded. Everyone anything on the floor got ruined. And we like the school wasn't gonna pay. And then my dad told me to say that he worked at FOX five and that you're going to get like ask Acer like I was going to get like one of those like investigative reporters to come to the college. So then they came back and offered us all money in and then like four years later, one of my roommates is like I was the one who broke the fucking thing. I just couldn't tell you guys then and it's like any just took scissors and just fucking we call them the scissor king from like ages twenty four to question, Mark. Because he just took out scissors and just smashed the fire skipping off for no reason. Other than like prank chaos. We used to do fine line between prank and Cass as you say it too because I'm like, oh, I can think of things in college that I would put more in a prank category. And I'm thinking, what makes it a prank versus fanned? Eliza. Well, vandalism is maybe against a higher power in a prank is against op person or a singular entity in some way 'cause I and vandalism has like. I don't know a prank is maybe less. Militias less malicious because let me tell you type because it's interesting as I have I have a billion vandalism stories that pop into my head. But I'm also so anti-vehicle ISM. I guess that's why like to point out the hope and ethos to it like, I'm sure that like graffiti artists have and speaking of that. So we're at the Daniel, and I are visiting Greece and have you ever been Athens? No. And it's it's like one of those places you feel you have to go to write your like gotta go to Greece. And I gotta go to Athens during feel isn't that a lot of people's checklists? You go got to go to the Parthenon in Athens. Right. Dude. People vandalize. I'm sure that's where the original vandals were right? They vandalize the Parthenon. I could not get over. I was so angry. I was drawn on it. Instead the amount of times we saw guns and roses. Just guns and roses written on the Parthenon spray painted, not even in some cools graffiti on. Shitty. Writing guns in fucking magic marker. Why guns and roses that so the time I went there the time we went there. I remember thinking the same thing going why guns N roses, and I feel like are. They just like ten years behind us or something. It'll be nirvana in five years from now. That's brutal that I'm against that. You know, it made me so fucking angry in that same trip. We were. In another museum. And some museums in some countries are you picture every museum but being like America museums there so fucking buttoned up and you're getting nowhere near fuck in art. No chance you're gonna get near them me or whatever. Right. Some east European countries. You can swap right up to the shit. We were in a place that had Minoan pottery, which I believe is the oldest pottery civilized I'm talking to ask a little bit. But it's definitely when the oldest pod right in civilization in the resigns in every language that said, please do not touch the the pottery in people going up to in fucking putting their hands picking it up. And I was going nuts. That would stress me out to that. Was someone have time to write guns and roses on the side of the Parthenon? How's that even possible? Just it's just being like that lacks of secure. I mean, I'm sure it's changed could write something on the Lincoln Memorial. Tonight. If you saw somebody doing that. Hey, man, what are you doing arcade? Fire. What the fuck? Here's the other. Convene, wasn't drives me crazy. I've lived in Santa Fe a lot of my life. And they had these beautiful Aspen. Trees..

"Have twin shaving. It's like cartons me. How Hala weaned kids trying to by fog and eggs is like trying to buy Sudafed in like Mississippi. I'll let me get twelve boxes of. This nasal decongestion sketch. It makes me think a New Mexico in these blue laws on Sundays the alcohol would go by aqua net and shit on Sundays. Cares. All you need is a little foresight, you need one days, but we we would. So the toilet papers kind of the most innocent form of vandalism. Let's your that's like your training wheels in most people's vandalism ever going to do that training wheels vandalism, and then it's also sort of allowed vandalism because when we're in high schools. Yeah. Like in high school you toilet paper on the pep rally. The football players all toilet paper that cheerleaders houses and the cheerleaders all toilet paper football players houses. And it was like those are not those are adults houses of sixteen year old. They don't want fucking toilet paper. But toilet vapors like the minimum. Like, no one gets mad. We had a color code. Did. You guys have. No, like if I can't remember exactly what it was something. Like this like if you get pink toilet paper, that's flirtatious in blue means going out with you. Why is like fuck you? That's awesome. There was some kind of color code non white toilet paper in a long time about. But I remember like growing up like GRA my grandma had like pink toilet paper. Like, this is so weird. But now talk about preparing once I got into that. Like once I got into the thrill, you get like a fucking journal in rush at the very least when you do it. And as a kid, I was like this. This is now who knows what age I started. But from then on that was my favorite holiday now. Preparing the whole years that meant stealing my dad's shaving cream, stealing those aerosol tops that you can stick on the top of shaving cream. You know that trick. Right. No. You don't. So for an aerosol can like for like when you have underarm that kind of right, right? You can take that little piece off you take that piece off the other thing off the shaving cream shaving cream will launch it'll go even further. Yeah. Doesn't fee. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah. That's great for tack and people sharing some steel on those all year round. I'm taking like the last toilet paper. Like, I'm I'm doing slyly. So not just taking. They're not noticing this. You're doing Shawshank style. Or you're like. Guess where it's at in my fucking four. So yeah, I'm stockpiling toilet paper the whole year round. So by the time, I I'm stealing from grandparents visit on Sunday. 'push by the time. Halloween comes round. I don't need to go buy any. I'm fully stockpiled. Eggs. So that's where you're kind of crossing that connects. Yeah. Because that'll fuck up your car, and people would get really fucking best or the side. You're and it could and it could break fucking an egg and break something, you know, what I mean? Like just thrown it like just remember being like that didn't sound like just an egg. And you hear about people getting face fucking. I got hit in the fucking like base of the skull one time like these kids just fucking beat me, and my friends mercilus, really. Yeah. I never I never did that to me. It was vandalism wasn't ever. Let's attack these people with eggs with with shaving cream. Yeah. Handfuls of shaving cream. Just get smacked in the it was all about like if you ran into kids older, it was literally like days and confused the older kids ran into your like, we got a jet, dude. Thank you be like stay in your neighborhood because you knew the yards from playing manhunt. So it's like on Halloween. We want get crazy. Trust me, baby. Joining me as always in the high mighty studios, Arthur Gabor's my nearly silent. Arthur shout amount. All right quiet today because he's not in the room, but I just get into a pattern, and I stick with it and speaking pattern the man who taught me about rule of threes completing the rule of threes on high and mighty we got Matt Besser back for third, Mattie. Be welcome back, sir. Thanks, man. I think we got a good part three that ties all the parts together. Bank. No, it's just like what is the? We'll figure out the umbrella wraps galleon. But you wanted to come back on to talk one more time because this was pre Halloween, but as schedules go, we didn't get together. The we're we wanna talk Halloween mischief. But I think vandalism is sort of yet. Simultaneously that made me think of it would be a good theme. Yeah. Because it ties to politics, right? Because you're having some issues back home in Arkansas. Yeah. There this politician should we back up? Where should we start feel like that's the end? That's the end is me in a fight with a politician who just got reelected, by the way, we lost. Fuck. And but he blames me for campaign signs being torn down in his district. He literally blames me atheist comedian that made. That's maybe that's the end of. We'll we'll start. We started childhood. Yeah. We she started childhood vandalism because I don't wanna be so gender bias. But there's something about boys young, boys. At least maybe it's maybe it's phased out more now. But I don't think so, but like vandalism like breaking stuff being messy was like there is a thrill of it for some reason messy interesting 'cause I am not messy, and I was not a messy kit. I see it as power mint. And I see it as something that starts when you're going through puberty, which may be. I'm just saying maybe, I don't know. But maybe boys more than during that time period of there's something in you. But like. I think he no matter what the age vandalism does empower someone that doesn't feel like they have power somehow. Right, right. Yes. It makes you feel bigger than you are. Yeah. Yeah. It maybe it's a thrill. I think as we go through the chronology of my vandalism. I haven't thought about it. Too much yet. There's a woman who was a flight attendant on China Eastern Airlines and a few months ago her boyfriend was on a flight from Hong Kong to Singapore while she was working while they were in the air. He surprised her by proposing in front of the whole plane. She cried and said, yes and everybody on the plane, clapped and cheered proposal went viral on YouTube and got almost a million views. Well, last week the woman got a letter telling her that she was fired. Why would she fired because the company said to her quote, private romantic behavior was extremely irresponsible for the safety of the passengers? Are you guys? She got fired because her boyfriend proposed in other words, she was on the clock. So she shouldn't be getting engaged should be doing her job. Definitely on her plan the whole time like she had control of that whole situation. She's hired an attorney to try to fight it. But it doesn't look good. So far, she might just have to go.
