Extreme Binaries

"Hip. How you doing? I'm doing well. It is finally spring as in. I can go play in the garden up there in Vancouver Island think Ryland. Yeah things are great. The weather is absolutely gorgeous and same thing. I have been out in the garden. The the only downside the robins get up at like four in the morning and they're you know they're breeding at this point to the Chirp Chirp Chirp and so I have one that found the the the really likes the acoustics right outside my room and so I've been getting up at four in the morning and then I have to go and get up and I have to call the window and then I try to get back to sleep and then I can't get back to sleep until you. Ivan haven't been getting a lot of sleep because robin has been singing his little heart out every morning really loud right outside my window. So hopefully he'll find a girlfriend and get lost until then yeah. It's pretty funny but spring. I mean you can't you can't go wrong. That is awesome so we're familiar with regular binary stars two stars orbiting each other simple. Of course the universe has come up with every combination of things orbiting other things and this week we look at some extreme examples are Pamela solicitous. Figure this out. What is a binary star so a binary star is a announced that that needs plural because a binary system is to? Who'S SEPARATE STARS? So a binary star is a system that exists in two stars and they can come in just about any kind of combination of regular star. Compact object Advanced Star Baby Star and they form a whole myriad of different ways. They can either a rise out of a single collapsing molecular cloud where they clapsed into their individual solar system by side-by-side or they can gravitationally get caught up together through some activity in their advanced lives. So when you're looking at a system statistically it's most common that it formed like that but they didn't have to right right and we can talk about that later on but I'm sort of imagining. That's her standard formation gigantic cloud of gas and dust that swirling around and you get like instead of all polling into the middle it pulls into two separate like what are the dynamics. Why doesn't it all just turn into one big star in the middle? Why how can you get multiple stars orbiting around each other so you actually have to fragments in the same molecular cloud? Okay gravitate pulling together and it happens to be that these fragments are close enough that the orbit one another different facts can bring them closer and closer over the years but they formed from two distinct fragments in the same like cloud and the fact that molecular clouds is fragmenting is how we end up with separate stars so the fragmentation is an unusual. These two are close enough that they got caught up in each other's gravity. And so then the vast majority of these situations you end up with some amount of stuff like a stars worth amount or mostly a red dwarfs amount of stuff but every now and then you end up with an extreme amount of stuff. These are very large blobs of gas and dust. And sometimes you just end up with two regular blobs that interact in ways. That are extreme. So we talk about extreme binary stay. We're GONNA talk about a whole lot of different combinations. So it's not just necessarily the amount of material that went into the star and the rain that it took but in fact these stars can interact with each other in really weird ways and 'cause really bizarre effects that we can see okay so so let's sort of break this down. Then when as you define extreme then we've defined binary to stars orbiting each other and start can be all kinds of things so let's define extreme. Give me sort of Sirte classifying. The kinds of extreme things that can happen so so when I'm talking extreme events I I am talking about things that radically 'cause upheaval. In the life of a star that could only happen because this is a binary system that any singular star with not undergo these kinds of well really bad millennia

Discovering Comets

"I'm Freezer Cain publisher of university with me as always as Dr Pamela. Gay a senior scientist for the Planetary Science Institute and the Director of cosmic quest. How you doing I'm doing. Well how are you doing fraser? Great Full on Paradise is back here on the west coast of Canada. Everything is growing like crazy. I can't we'd fast enough to keep up with the the new plants that yes. Yeah yes I put eight bucky garbage pails out filled with yard waste for the garbage trucks to come and take away. This is madness. Yeah Yeah and it's it's beautiful like every everywhere you like. Oh it'll never like just looks like such horror show and then boy come. May everything just just paradise again. Love it up here. I did plant my ps too early and they have little frost tinged leaves for the ones that didn't get underneath my cold frame fast. Enough a weird we. We can plant our piece here January and that's pretty much can't plant them early enough. January's fine February. Yeah and then. That's the perfect timing because they like to be cold and then they come up and then yeah we actually have a very mild climate here on Vancouver Island compared to what you have. So Oh yeah well and you started your PS outside. I started mine inside. And you're like wait we. We don't like it out here to you. You always start them outside here. You don't you're it's crazy you're wasting your time you just dump you dump amount of peas into the ground and they are popping by by. March you start to get fresh peas off them by April. I didn't plan any this year. We've we've shifted everything deflowers because somebody likes flowers and hates hate peas although peas meek flowers flowers yeah but anyway let's get onto it so discovering comets is one of the fields that amateurs can still make regular contribution to astronomy but more and more comets are getting found by spacecraft automated systems and machine learning this week. We'll talk about how comets discovered in how you can get your name on one. Have you ever tried to be? Have you ever tried to discover a comment very briefly in graduate school? And then the fact that I had to do graduate. Schoolwork stopped that plan. Yeah so so. How did how did that work like man? I want my name on a comet. Well it was the Soho Data and so not every games. Yeah but it was just the I want to be the first one. It's it's like you see people who on threads on forms or like I and that's all they want to do. This is the comment equivalent of this. Because I just have to do everything nerdier so I wanted to be able to say I on an image of a comment and Soho data so all right so for I mean we've done episode whole epistle comments. We've talked about many things but for anyone who I guess I don't want I don't want to say like you don't don't don't explain what a comet is but explain explain in come off like this baby's first astronomy cast like. Let's let's bring things forward a little bit here. But at least let's talk about the features of comets as a relate to how and where we see them. Find them okay. So comets are small bodies in our solar system that when you apply enough heat grow a cloudy coma around them and a tale of debris that is getting pushed back from them by the solar wind their orbits tend to be a lot more elliptical than the orbits of Asteroids and so we often initially categorize something as asteroid or comet based on its orbit. Because when you find a comet far enough out you can't tell what its future may be but really the only difference between an asteroid and a comet is the ratio of things that melt and things that don't add inner solar system temperatures and we have those two varieties of commerce. We have the short period long period comets and. I'd say that we actually have three because we also have. Yeah sure you need to add behave like a long period comet and so short period comets they go around and around and around and they don't get that far away from the sun and they appear on a regular basis but I mean that can be Haley's comet once every seven years you see this thing flare back up again and again and again. While the long periods we're seeing them for the first time ever and chances are they've never been to the inner solar system and there's a really good chance that a lot of prior long period comets that we saw were actually interstellar and we just didn't know it because we didn't stop to think about it

Cultivated: The Elements of Floral Style with Christin Geall, The Earth In Her Hands

"Tell us. I think it's been two years. Kristen since we last spoke maybe even a little bit longer. But I am very pleased to be holding your book in my hand and to have your photography and you're just inimitable writing and thinking altogether in one beautiful little package. Tell us and tell listeners. What is your current. What do you do right now? Like what are your jobs? And how do you describe your current plant based Practice Kristen? Oh it's diverse mounting our time keeping track of it all lately. I think it's going to be a slow year in the garden of with the book. Coming out everything has changed and I will be doing. A number of speaking events Around the country and in England and also in Canada and trying to get the book out into the World MMA team of one here so I am also still trying to take photographs when I can but we are. Speaking of February for people are listening at another time of year. So it's just coming into seating season for me and I do have a small urban flower farm here and produce cut flowers that will either sell wholesale or direct consumer and to private clients so that's predominantly what I'm doing. I'd like to be working on another book but I just haven't had the bandwidth for it just yet. Yeah because the diversity of all those things is really It's demanding and it's it's important and we're GONNA get more into that when we talk about the book and why it was important for you to put your flower practice into this new form But first let's refresh listeners. Memories with your own background and a little bit about where you grew up in the people in places implants that that grew into a person for whom this would be a calling. Well not one of those who can conjure the memory of a grandmother or anything so romantic. I grew up in downtown Toronto in in Canada. And my experience of nature at that time was predominantly That of wilderness. And I mean not in a very Canadian sense of the word so while I had a healthy respect for nature and knew how to navigate my way chop wood carry water paddle canoes. Swim Lake Sales Ski a number of those things they weren't related to horticulture in any way and In my early twenties I are actually when I was still a teenager. I did go off an Work with an herbalist in. Martha's on Martha's Vineyard Massachusetts for the summers and that really domesticated me at my understanding of nature and I have not swayed from that position since I live in British Columbia now on Vancouver Island which is largely wilderness. And I don't spend much time out with the big trees or the big waves on truth be told. I've now focused on gardening and that world A few other things happened. In between those years I went back to the land in my early twenties and homesteaded and lasted about five years carving a garden out of the Bush on an island British combat was off Grad and then I went to Q. Gardens in England in the midst of that while I still own that property to intern and knew that through doing that that I didn't really want to be a fulltime horticulturalist but I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted to be. Thought I wanted to be at landscape architect Because I felt that it was interpretive in some way and about people in place in some way and I did complete. A degree in environmental studies and anthropology was exposed to a lot of ethnic. Botany my twenty s and then I had a baby and decided writing at are always carried me through all of these endeavors and so I did a graduate degree right so having this book now where I get to Mary. Environmental Thinking and Horticulture with creative writing was a joy actually and that is a beautiful distillation of some of the bigger threads in your life and and some of what comes up so beautifully in the book. This idea of the bill. Land and the environmentalism and the formal design sense and literary sense and context are all really rich threads in the book in a way that is that there is something really meaningful to someone like me who is a verbal person office obviously and that context in the bigger scheme of things where flowers and design and thinking about them in Artistry. Sit In our longest deepest cultures. I found just powerful and beautiful. So so let's move to the book. There are so many books in in Florists and flowers and why this book why now what was what was your personal purpose with this book. I being student of writing and also a past student of horticulture. I felt that there was a place for even more literary book about flowers. I think in a way when I first began the project. I would've been happy to have no photos in it but I think I short change my skills photographer. People seem to really love the flowers and they do serve as a as a good teaching tool for what it is. I'm discussing and a number of the books that are out. There have been designed like cookery books in so far there recipe based and for me living on an island in Canada. I didn't have access to those products and I figured while there must be many people like me that cannot get themselves to a flower market in order to purchase these items so they're stuck with what they have in their gardens. So how did they create that? How can they still or maybe they might grow some of the flowers that are fashionable in required for these recipes. But it's like trying to find a Rambutan in in my local grocery store at these things are so difficult to find. So let's make a book at out the principles of design so that once a person is versed in knows principals. They can apply them to whatever product they have at hand and of course for many people who have had to take the basics of English or the written language The famous strunk and White. The elements of style should come to mind immediately. I think it might be out of fashion by but I and I know it is. It is stronger in American audiences but my editor came up with that and I had to laugh and I did write about this in the book because I actually had to teach and elements of style class when I was out of graduate school to Undergrad and I had this and this crowd of poets and journalists and fiction writers all in one room because it was an elective in the writing department and I had to address. What is style? What is style? How do these young people who are craving style of their own? How do they conjure that? And I did it through you talke about syntax talking about punctuation talking about nounce talking about verbs and in a similar way in this book I wanted to really break style down into Lessens the lessons of designer the principles of design and I will say I think I was heavily influenced by the fact that my call. The shirt is Princeton architectural press and there was just something about that word architecture. All that made me feel like Oh my goodness I better know what I'm talking about. In terms of designed they did not put that rigor upon me by the way but my editor was fantastic and wonderful to work with and she's one came up with the

How the Royals Are Moving On

"Been a very busy week for the royal family and it feels like you might hear me say this later on in the show but the thought of the day for me the dust is finally finally settling on Harry Megan's departure from rural Giusti's and Beginning that new life in Canada. We've heard very little from the couple this this week last week. We spoke a lot about the legal letter that the couple issued when patsy had harassed them ounce on Vancouver Island this this week it seems like things finally getting a little quieter and ultimately that is exactly what they want I think that they will remain like that full. Oh the days and weeks to come visit the happy and other stories taking up the headlines this week which will be getting into in the show. Little later Ron Prince. Andrew has continued according to reports to avoid questioning by the F. B. I.. Are we talking about that with our guest this week. we've also had the Cambridge's Prince Charles and the Duchess of cone will out at Holocaust. Memorial events will be talking about the meaning of that and why it's so important member of the royal family to be involved in such important occasions and of course we have Had Cambridge's out separately and together this week the Duchess of Cambridge continued her big push on her five big question survey across the UK. This is what she launched last week. aim to spark conversation about raising the next generation of children. It's all very much part of her early early years Childhood Development Work that she's involved with She was a school in London this week kindergarten. I believe where she visited visited. Children under the age of five years old to help serve their school meals as she actually helps in the kitchen preparing all of the lunches that we're brought out and it's always. I think it's always great to see kate around children. I think it's a time when sets in the I remember in the early days of hurting engagement agents. She was always very nervous when it came to public speaking. And perhaps a little shyer on some of the engagements around other adults or officials and it was always around children that we would see her really come out of her shell and while she has grown in confidence now I think that's it's always going to be where she's at home comfortable and it makes sense why she has chosen to focus their so famously on charter developments. And we'll see more engagements from her in the weeks to come to conduct Cambridge also heading off to Wales in the U K next Tuesday to visit organizations and businesses at the heart of local communities. There I would say that this type of day out is very much a traditional title Royal Away Day it is the visiting community centers. It is the cutting ribbons. It is the wet Wednesdays in random parts. What's that the UK that rules are best known for and I think it will be a day of four or five engagements. Some of those are embargoed so I went into into them now but I think it's whilst may be quiet now on the Sussex's side of things we are. Seeing the members of the family Really stepped forward. It and I guess work on an even bigger stage. It'll be interesting to see how this will work out when the Sussex is back at work look I think that whether people want it or not the tabloids are going to pit them against each other and it's going to be a constant conversation Asian about who's over shattering who. I think there was something this week. A couple mealy posted something on instagram and will already accused. I Buy Purchase tabloid for somehow thwarting attempts by other members of the royal family to get their work out. There it's all part of the silliness and stupidity that it goes on here but I would like to shift gears for a second and bring on my guest for this week. Julius Redon is an editor at the Australian Australian women's weekly she's all several correspondent and author including a book that I will talk to you about shortly. We've gotten to know each other. Haven't we me Julius over the years through royal tolls. We sat me. Have we've been hanging out there watching them. Yeah I feel like it's it's a quite unique experience going on these world. Hordes that very few others sort of get to truly understand what it's like a bizarre school trip of sorts very definitely a bizarre. It's also bizarre full. Muth of journalism for all the other forms of journalism we do. There's nothing like being. WHOA correspondent is absolutely I feel so in some ways the rules are a little bit different when it comes to roll reporting because I think whilst elst lots of the daily coverage is based on the work that the members of the royal family? It's also heavily focused on their private lives and this year has pretty much revolved around the private. Lives of Harry and Meghan I feel like this is the first week. Actually the dust feels like it settling and were were able to see or notice what other members of the family are up to as well yes. I mean here in Australia. Certainly the I've seen them Joepat the headlines a bit twitches night out what Harry and Meghan were after a little bit a piece of calm after the storm but also a few few mentions of Starting Life in Canada and potential ideas about what we might be up to. Yeah I feel like the the beginning of this year has been quite dramatic for the royal family. I don't think that the press has been particularly positive for the start of the year as well I think. Now that people are starting to dissect an analyze the reasons behind Harry making making the news that they wanted the rule family probably correct. If I'm wrong it seems like there may be some damage control to do as the months go by and now Prince Andrew Stories coming back into lights. It's GonNa be in some time. I think before the voyles get sort of bask in the glory that usually comes with coverage of the Royal Family. Yes yes I agree I mean I I think that The stories that we've been looking at obviously Harry and Meghan leaving Prince Andrew that they're not the sort of things that The Royal Family would like us to be talking about I mean here in Australia. There has been a lot of support for Harry and Meghan departure. I I think that's a a basic understanding of two young people wanting to control that live someone to to do their own thing and they don't you know. Australians Australians. Don't really understand why that would be such a big deal but it's what I'm asked about When when I when I talk about what what has happened most people say well what is what is the deal here? You know what. Why can this couple not choose to do their own thing? You know. It's not not such a bad thing that they're doing everything that we have seen them too has been trying to make a difference in the wild. Why can't we allow them to do? That

The Crown And An HBO Cartoon About The Royals

"Robbie had this in his intercooler earlier about the animated show that HBO has ordered about the Royals hi I think I can interested in this really cute it's called the prince and it's based on on Gary genet he's Instagram account which I thought to rises six year old Prince George all you're kidding the son of prince William and princess Kate he right right for family guide I mean just the picture if you if you look up animated royal you know show up you'll see all the characters animated and prince Phillip his look in print see old really Hey it looks great that great high cheek bones I don't know why I act as a key holder like I didn't know that he was ninety believe that they're still alive no I think it's incredible because they're like she's a lady of the lake leisure I mean should what they're both in their nineties and she looks great yes love her and she always has like on a very colorful outfit you know like in a bright color I think the show will be kind of funny I can I'm I'm looking for dissing this animation the Royals just interest me I'm fine this guy now on Instagram I think it's because of the crown but you know I don't know I think with the death of princess Diana and and there's just you know with with watching her boys grow up on television yeah and yeah I just I'm so interested in just that life I am too it's just fascinating that it is real life yeah I know it's like they're living a fairy tale right well some of the some of them into a minute the situation but the cast is Orlando bloom as prince Harry Tom Hollander as both prince Philip and prince Charles and Alan **** as George's Butler when if and this is coming on the heels of Netflix saying that they're interested in working with Harry and Meghan on on the on the crown wait wait you know that's not gonna happen right well we can we afford to what I want to say about that yeah okay so as we if you if you're watching the crown you've seen are you watching the crown absolutely if you're watching the crown for those if you're listening you know that it's now we're kind of we're in a season hopefully I'm not spoiling this but we're going to see as the years go by so now we're seeing kind of how prince Charles evolved into who he was how he met Camilla which I'm like this is really all I can like I feel like I should know all these things see and I feel like I do it's so so I'm wondering I'm watching more to see how they present the story that I already now okay just from growing up in sure my mom was huge into the Royals and okay so you're waiting for what's happening next who's gonna play this we know yeah I've already cast princess Diana I think for the next season do we know who it is I've seen a picture of her and she looks very similar to princess Diana let you look that bad so you're thinking okay as the seasons progress we're gonna start seeing more of prince Harry prince William well not so fast prince Harry has no interest in having his life with Meghan Markle play out for all to see on the crown and he's a trip he there thinking he probably would attempt to have their narrative written out of the script so a biographer her name is Angela Levin she wrote a biography about prince Harry and she spoke to him and he said I'm going to stop any production if Netflix tries to center a season about me and Meghan see now this story I'm seeing Kelly is live in that it was revealed that Harry once joked to his biographer or that he was gonna make sure he stopped it before they got to him he he he was joking anything he actually like is the do you think that he would be okay with him and Meghan being portrayed on the crown I don't think he has a say I don't think he has any say like you somebody could put a show on about our crew would that be entertaining and they've already done a movie about Megan and hairy I feel like once it gets to that point I think people will be tired of the crown I think what's interesting about the crown right now it's it it's not happening right now it's not all in our face it's what happened before really anything was that accessible back then to Americans the you know the crown the Royals weren't that accessible right they are now right so it's very interesting to see well that's how they lived because now we kind of know how they live they live real fancy now they live in little cottages are more like palaces but I don't know I am I wonder still get to maybe I have the wrong do you remember princess Stephanie I'm rob do you remember princess Stephanie she was kind of a trouble maker she dated rob Lowe does that ring a bell to you nothing's ringing on her really yes he may have been Monaco on come on if we did it was kid wishy no they got to get to forgive me they've got to get to Andrew see that to me is what's really exciting yeah she was Stephanie of Monaco so I don't know how it works with she was the the prince Rainier the third sign on and the daughter of Grace Kelly she's beautify now you know I'm looking at a bizarre Harper's bazaar has an article about actress Emma Corran C. O. R. R. I. and she's going to portray princess Diana she looks quite like her you think so yeah I mean she's got the hair I can see it I mean she's blind but the email do you like how the season is changed where the actors are different now I don't mind it it's growing on me yeah I don't mind I think a livia Coleman is amazing I I was talking with some girlfriends this weekend about it and they they hadn't started watching it but they had heard they were new new characters new actresses and actors right and they were hesitant to watch it because of that I said you're going to forget about it you're going to forget that they are not the same not this not clear voice I mean right it's different but it's it grows on you well what I like about it too is that it gives you know instead of making clear for a look older boy I think that's okay okay on instead of making her look older they're giving an older actress the gig but it's older isn't she supposed to be in her thirties and this season is that right clear forty is that age I feel like no think about it says it's a baby in her forties maybe in her forties because prince Charles in this this season is like eighteen nineteen yeah so I mean is he that young I think he's a he's a college so maybe he's sick twenty I don't know anyway I do I do it makes me like the queen even more see you see all the stuff you have to deal with you know and but you get a look at her behind the scenes that even though you know we're not watching a documentary he'll actually I get the Google machine out the entire time I'm watching it and like that this really happened to this really happened I mean it's very interesting how they take things the events that happened and put it in the show and make it so very realistic but it also makes he understand my Meghan Markle's like peace I'm out I'm not totally it by the way speaking of so they're in Canada now print tarian Meghan Markle are in Canada but they're still battling with the British paparazzi so a day after Harry lands on Vancouver Island his lawyers sent a cease and desist letter to on a bunch of news outlets in the U. K. and threat and that action will be taken if they publisher by photographs taken of Meghan and her son Archie or their son I should say taking a walk on the sun newspaper published the photos and NBC's today show aired them there are all over the internet right now but there are serious safety concerns according to this letter about how the paparazzi are driving in the risk to life that they are posing now I've got to imagine that Harry's got some you know does a trauma related to the way he lost his mother in a car crash while trying to escape the paparazzi back in ninety seven but according to the letter photographers have permanently camped outside the couple's home and they're using long range lenses to take pictures so even though they're not in England they're still going to get this they offer other mereka I mean that's just how it's going to be that sadly she does look real happy in this photo of her walking with a rich she and her two dogs and also the to what looked like security behind her yeah that's what I can get yeah well what's interesting about this picture that's everywhere of her with Archie like kind of strapped to her yeah do you see how she's holding it he looks a little I think she's got him he looks real happy and she looks like a normal person and leggings and boots and she got a hat on yeah great she looks adorable for her by the way season three and it looks like Queen Elizabeth is between thirty eight and fifty one I'm supposed to be in okay it's amazing how just their facial expressions can make them look like the queen yeah I'm sure they study they've studied her for a very long time an mazing if you're not watching the crown we highly recommend it

Prince Harry returns to Canada to join Meghan Markle and Archie

"Prince Harry he's back in Canada with Meghan also their baby son Archie up north now is the family begins their new life after a whirlwind couple of weeks the Duke of Sussex arrived on Vancouver Island last night on the heels of that historic week in London in which he met with the royal family leading to Queen Elizabeth announcing over the weekend that he and Megan will no longer use their Royal Highness titles or receive public money now I am hearing and you probably heard this too and reading that they actually stand to make more money by splitting off with all the deals they're going to be involved in with Anna and I think they're already talking to the Disney people about something so I don't think we're gonna be having to do a tag day for Harian Meghan and if you get you get a feel for them I mean how hard a decision this must have been and and and what they're doing and now I mean even though they have sort of a cut the of royal ties are many of them that still though the focus on them yeah I mean the paparazzi is not gonna leave them alone just because of what they did now so good luck to

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to surrender their royal titles

"So they will no longer represent the queen will no longer be working members of the royal family nor will they use that titles of Royal Highness that was a statement from Queen Elizabeth the second late on Saturday confirming the future status of her grandson prince Harry and his wife Meghan the couple have been embroiled in a few Rory over their future role since announcing a desire to step back as senior members of the British royal family correspondent anymore is here with me in the studio this sounds like a clean break yeah that's fine I mean how do you make and says the Tate said they want to step back from wrote you tease the still in fact seems a bit more radical than that as you say yeah it's more of a a clean break so the details were announced in that statement from the queen so they will lose that HRH titles his Royal Highness her wrong hi this they will become simply the juke of Sussex she will be the Duchess they won't carry out any royal duties they want to get any money from royal sounds okay patronage of organizations and charities that they'd like will continue of course he will lose or his official military titles very difficult for a man who did serve in the British Army Kohls are the couple will route paid two point four million pounds from public funds that was spent on renovating from small cottage where they leave a twin to council in the future they will continue to live there when they're in the U. K. but they will pay which older commercial rent for that that statement from the queen very personal she talked about family she said Harry make and and Archie the sun will always be much less love to members of my family as she went on to say I recognize the challenges and intense scrutiny they have faced and she said I'm particularly proud of how may can I said quickly become one of the family Harry is still in line to the throne amidst all this is Andy he is yes he's still in line to the throne though he says he he wants with Megan to go off and start a new life they talked about speaking that time between Canada and the U. K. E. we haven't got much detail on what's that new life will be what form it will take it was very brief statement on their website which said they will provide you information on the rolls and well could you can touches of Sussex in June course Macon is on Vancouver Island at the moment and we understand that Harry will probably join her in June course later on this week what a future security costs because clearly that's one of the areas that isn't quite clarified at this point indeed one of the issues that hasn't been clarified in fact I told were there was no mention all of all of that age will be a great and continuing expense as former oils as internationally known people they will need security wherever they are in the world there was no information in a statement about who will pay for that and whether it will be the British taxpayer or whether the Canadian taxpayer may take him a policy that so it's one of those issues that is unclear at the moment and the hope certain within Buckingham Palace presumably is that this draws a line to an extent under what has been quite a difficult episode absolutely a very difficult time full the queen for the royal family coming so soon offer the problems with the prince Andrew his association with the billionaire financier Epstein and that dissolves to seem to he did with the BBC television so there is this incident this difficulty coming so soon after that one but the queen wanted it to be resolved as soon as possible it has been within about a week after they announce they want to step back these arrangements will start in the spring and we're told that it will be reviewed after years of the queen officially hopes this will be the start of a new chapter they will be able to do what they wish to start a new life in the royal family will be able to carry on as before Andy thank you very much

Prince Harry pitched Meghan's voiceover work to Disney CEO at 'The Lion King' premiere

"Talk about more Megan markle really. There's more my God. I did thirty minutes the other day. Oh boy there's way more of course and I'm sure they'll be even more. This is like an ongoing big story. All right as we spoke about and I mentioned I think. And and it's obvious one of the big motivators for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to make this shift in their royal life. Life is for money and to allow Meghan Markle to work and she's already got a job. You know what the rules of the crown there established for a reason and or multiple reasons queen. Elizabeth is a lot older older than prince. Harry like decades upon decades. She's seen it all and she knows how things work. Very and Megan have really opened up. The most massive acid can of worms because now everything that they do actually is gonNA come under greater scrutiny for for example doc over the holidays and actually still. They've spent time in Vancouver Island at the home of some really rich rich Russian person and they have refused to reveal the name of whom that is their new role. They want to take part in there not abdicating. They don't want to abdicate. They still want to keep their titles and they still want to be a part of the royal family. They still claim to want to go on engagements for Queen Elizabeth and represent her in the UK and abroad so I would think that they should still will be transparent right so right now. They're not even living up to what they say they want to do. They're not being transparent. They were flat out asked by the media to maim aim that rich Russian person and they refused so time that into what I was starting with. Meghan markle just got a gig with Disney. She signed in some kind of voiceover deal going to do some some voice over project with them in exchange for a donation to charity however however as soon as I heard that the biggest red bulb but that the expression red bulb is that is that a that mashing mall. Whatever it doesn't matter we know what you know what I mean right? The biggest the biggest light bubble the the biggest warning or whatever went off in my brain. I'm like let me break it down for you all yes Disney's Disney's GonNa make a donation to the elephant charity and they're GonNa pay her DA. It's like pay me but I come with strings. I'm not going to search for free. You pay me but you also have to give a big donation to this charity. And if that's the case if that's the case I think they need to be transparent as well right given how they are positioning their new role. I think they're still public. Figures like politicians and they need me to be transparent and if they don't and they're not and then if it does become public knowledge in the future because Disney is a public company. It will come to bite them in the but this is GonNa Backfire in so many ways. I cannot wait to see it all go down. I don't think it matters. They decided that they don't want to take the royal family money or money from the people there and they want to earn their own money and they're still doing a little bit of both. They're giving money and taking money at the same time. I'm not really sure the bites them. It sounds like they're being transparent. They're just not telling you everything as most people don't you don't tell us everything of how your money comes in nor do I I just think they wanna be more normal in that regard and yet they're still giving. They're also like a politician and if a politician straight up asked about something and then straight straight up refuses to answer that's not being transparent however they are being transparent because they're saying we're it's tit for tat. We are are not taking the money from the crown any longer but we are taking money from other people. We don't have to tell you. We'll continue to work for the crown. We just won't take their money. We'll just do it free when we want to do it. So they're just basically hired work while this also that does bring up other and this is why I I didn't even mention this last episode. This is why it is such a complicated issue. Because in America there are all sorts of rules around this. Can you see that with trump children. You know those that like like the Russian whomever or like Disney there could be undue influence and access us to the the the royal family to the crown to the Queen bought through Harry and Meghan. That's a stretch. It's not a stretch. It's it's it's absolutely Louis Accurate yeah but they're not Americans. I mean she's not filing taxes in America. She is not living here right is she. Thought they were GonNa live in Canada or something but she's still filing taxes in America she has to legally. She hasn't renounced her American citizenship. That's how being in America works. If you make money you have to report your money right. Yeah Yeah it's interesting. I also I saw this video. That was wild last year. What did that movie come out? I don't remember but whatever the Lion King movie came out Harry and Meghan went when the Lion King Premier in London and video just surfaced that a fan talk of prince like oh I got this is how successful people do shit and not even having to do with like being the one percent of the one percent which Prince Harry is but a lot of successful so people they just ask for things and your that successful when you're that privileged if you ask for things people don't want to tell you know so so at the Lion King Premier Prince. Harry had a conversation with the head guy at all Disney Bob Eiger and you could hear you're him say did you know she does voiceovers. He's like no. I didn't know that he's like you did it. No like he said it twice yes and then. He's like she'd love to do voiceovers servers like way before this is all announced they were already working on these things Ah I love it I love it. I love everything about it. I can't wait to see how this continues to play

Harry and Meghan are moving to Canada. What does this mean for everything?

"Well it's official. Royal couple will be moving to Canada. Prince Harry and Meghan dropped a royal bombshell last week. The couple took to social media to announce their stepping back from senior royal duties. The Palace wasn't impressed in the queen called an emergency crisis meeting to figure out next steps ups of a Queen calling the discussions constructive adding she supportive of Harry and Megan's desire to be a young independent family. She also confirmed that Harry and Meghan again. We'll be living in Canada. This as you'll hear from our guest today is huge. Half in half out. It's never been done before. So what's what's behind the move. What are Harry Megan's plans for their time in Canada? What does this mean for their future? And what does this mean for the future of the monarchy and I'm Claire Broussard. In for Jordan Heath Rawlings and this is the Big Story Patricia Treble double of royalty dot com is the royal contributor for Maclean's I patricia locally. So tell me about the moments that set all of this In motion the big announcement. Well the big announcement came on the eighth of January It was after six o'clock London time so all the palace officials officials that everyone had gone home right. They were or leaving or they're in transit and Harry and Meghan sent out what they called a personal message using the work medications patients so I got an email like all other royal reporters who are on that system. They also put it on their instagram account. And everything like that and basically saying they are stepping away from their roles as senior royals which came as a bit of a surprise to a lot of people because further reporting shows that while the he baby talking about reimagining their roles and changing the roles and maybe kind of stepping back from some duties the Queen had very explicitly said to Harry. Please don't do anything public until we settled this out. And they went ahead and by all accounts gave his brother Prince William and his father Prince Charles ten minutes notice so it was a done deal so they have basically basically launch themselves into the great known royal wise and I mean you follow royals for a living. What was your first reaction? My first reaction was in my jaw dropped and I picked it up ice. I forward that email onto my editors with Eight engine like you know those those red fire engines a survey. This is huge breaking news breaking news. It was jaw dropping because it was. It is so unusual You know we've not ever moved. Never had a senior royal stepping away from their duties like this before and it was also very personal for royal watchers. We could kind of see this coming. We knew that there was a change calming and it wasn't just with them taking six weeks off at the end of last year. It was even before that if you go back you know to the previous months when they were in southern Africa and they gave that incredibly emotional Raw interview to documentary. Puerta who's one one of their friends. Tim Bradley Tom Brady. And they talked about how Harry talked about how he basically really doesn't like the press at all. I mean every click reminds him if a mother And if you looked at Meghan you know she was clearly under pressure. She was struggling in the role and she kept talking about how it it wasn't enough to just survive. You have to thrive as you knew there was going to be a change and even then if you would go even further back though there these little telltale signs and one of the big ones for royal watchers when you Kinda look at it is in the sound so simple you know or not even obvious but it's that they have not gone to Balmoral which is the summer vacation spot of the Queen? The queen goes up there for a few months every year Late summer early autumn and all her family come visit in the years to come for about a week the roll through. You know it's not like everyone comes for the same week and they roll through and they go hiking and they do all sorts of stuff and she loves having her family around her. I mean it's the same like at Christmas. She likes to have her extended family gathering together. You know she's ninety-three she's always done. This is very much her thing and for the last two years. They begged off by immoral. They have not gone. And that's kind of one of those little signs that all was not well. That all was not settling in as well as everyone had hoped she would. So what was the reaction from Buckingham Palace. The reaction from Buckingham Palace was astonishing. Because about two hours later there was this to sentence sentence. Missive that basically said Oh cut cut cut cut cut through all the the the niceties like. Oh Oh my oh. Oh my my We need to think about this. This is all really complicated. Oh my basically that's what it is and you could see that. They were clearly caught off guard and they are making no bones about the fact that they were caught off guard by what Harry. Megan did and it wasn't just the message alone. You know saying you know. They want a balance you know their their time. Between the United Kingdom in North America they want a balanced their their private life their family life with duty you know and they kept talking about how they want to clam rate with the Queen and honor our duty to McQueen McConnell and everything like that but it was at the same time. They launched a website Sussex and that's their brain and it was the Sussex Royal Dot Com. If you you looked at it it was all loaded with this incredibly sophisticated website with all their thoughts about the financing. How they're going to finance themselves? They're talking about financial independence and and it talks about the Commonwealth. Every like that so this was not a sun thing. This was not just ended. This was planned. They had been working on this for a very very longtime and why exactly they lost. Shit this point likely because You know his thoughts you know his preliminary thoughts about the spending more time in Canada or spending more time away had made the press There was a story in the sun the day before and they just thought. Let's just go for it but they didn't tell. Oh Granny Yeah and speaking of the press. We've seen so many examples lately of different headlines for Kate and Megan. I mean there's time they're doing both the exact same thing at the headlines ends for. Kate can be positive and cheery and the headlines for Meghan can sometimes be pretty nasty What is that all about? Do you think that could be behind Harry and Megan's decision to leave so I've talked about this and I actually. I went into a certain depth. I got a backup to say that The tabloids in Britain The present Britain is just a whole whole different beast from what we're used to. I mean you must understand that And the other thing is you've got this differentiation between the print side and the online side right there that you don't have here so it's a again a very different beast and so if you're looking at something like Daily Mail they will take a story and they will slice it fifty eight ways to Sunday And they'll have fifty eight little stories and all with click bait headlines and stuff like that because that's what they're doing they they want you to click on the article. They want you to read the article. So the more extreme stream the headline the more the more they can talk and spin something they will do it and that is it standard over there and so what what happens is unfortunately making his the first person to marry into the raw family in the social media world and in the first world of this new type of journalism this online you know take tiny little snippet like there was a snippet about a Canadian billionaire. Somebody reported Canadian. Billionaire was the one who loans them his his his house in Vancouver island instantly. That story was everywhere they did all this thing about. Here's this guy. Here's his relationship to Clinton did a and then he goes on twitter and goes no. Oh that's I don't have a house here. I have no communications. This is completely false but by then that story everywhere and unfortunately what happens. Is You get these stories. So you'll get you know. Kate looks fabulous and green. Megan looks pattern green. But then you'll get. Kit Looks Fabulous in Green. Kate looks bad and green. Kate looks good white. Why is Kate wearing white again? You got these stories endlessly and the issue is that what a lot of people in you know when you become famous one of the first things everyone advises. You don't don't read the press. Yeah don't read the press. There is so much bad. Press out there and it is talked and often it is wrong and often it is inflamed and we're not talking the mainstream media. We're not talking the royal correspondence and things like that. We're talking about just the just the amorphous stuff that you everyone finds online and it's clear that they are reading the press and they're getting more upset and I would be because a lot of the stuff is they'll take a little nugget of information and spin it but at the same time they were getting upset about things that approve true. So Harry a Meghan. Were really upset about that. They were splitting from William and Kate and forming their own charity. That turned out to be true. They were upset because you know there were reports that make an Harry. Were churning through staff. That was true that they were that they were leaving. The Kensington Palace compound. That was true. You you know that. They jetted off repeatedly on private jets in the middle of summer while also talking up environmental causes. That's true so you know you're putting yourself in the public. I you have to expect criticism. Some of it is going to be unbelievably wrong and some of it is going to be legitimate. And it's a matter of balancing that out. What what does it mean really to step away from the family like officially will Harry still be Prince and Megan still be a duchess who the heck no really really? We don't even know this is this. Is this the mystery. We don't really know what this is GonNa mean what the few their future is. But you can make you could start to finding the tea. Leaves parsing royal statements is an art form. That a lot of us a figured out. Okay and so if you look at the statement after everyone met at Sandringham to talk about this The Queen issued a statement on January thirteenth. And it she talked about how it was incredibly emotional It was a very personal message. The Queen does not do you. Emotion like this not in public right Not Her thing. Form a woman formal generation. This is simply not. It is not for her to do it for other the generations to do. You'll get Charles everyone. Hugging people not going But if you look at it she she you she talks about Harry and Meghan. You know she doesn't talk about conductress Sussex. She talks about family eight times and she says that they will quote remain a valued part of my family But it's clear she says we. We wanted them to say fulltime royal working. They're not going to valued member of my family. I think what that means is that they are. They're not going to be doing official duties. I think that that is pretty much sending out the signal that if they want to go into commercial ventures which it looks as though they do to take the Sussex Royal brand global all that is simply incompatible with royal duties. Because you've got that conflict of interest because are you doing something because somebody's paying you to do it or you doing something something. Because you're supporting the crown and remember official royal duties and those are the ones that are in the court circular. You're doing this in support of the monarch and the monarchy. You're not doing it for yourself. It is very much support of her. You're aiding her so I think they're going to be all out but there are still her

"Family. She married my husband and i got some cool right yeah. Ah she's amazing anybody that hears the from the small town on vancouver island that i am from. She's like a celebrity there so yet it whoever whoever it just it's important to me that when someone is looking for their care provider especially when they're having babies. Don't just settle for feel like you have to. I almost felt they had to kind of go with dr scared inner goodbye ending someone that you feel here's you is one of the most important things you can do that just shows up and you feel comfortable with it made all the difference in my life yeah yeah no absolutely absolutely but that is so important and it goes back to even feeling hurt in your experience totally how you're gonna feel about your birth things experienced. Does i have a big impact so you definitely want to be somebody that you trust and who validates you and who you feel here's you and and i mean in general i think women are kind of we feel like we have to be more on the quiet side and in in birth you really you gotta feel like you can tell your mother in law to get out of the room and tell me your husband to rub somewhere else on your back yeah. That's that's kind of the other thing. I took out of it and bring to do lower yeah. Absolutely you have to not be afraid to voice your work and that's where as dulas really do meet asked asked this person to leave. Do you want me to you know kind of help them. How can this be a comfortable environment for you. I can have everyone get out. Someone come in. I can you know just kind of oversee that that process because it can be. It can be really hard when you're in the moment and i understand. I think a lot of women don't want to hurt people's feelings and such like it's okay yeah yeah no. That's awesome some easing that you had those empowering birth experiences and you get continue helping other women than feel that outweigh the i feel really really really grateful. I know how many women don't get that like you mentioned before it really is something that you have to heal from those experiences that leave you feeling powerless and bad from the gecko and you haven't done anything except for create gate life which is insanely amazing brain. No-one should ever walk away from that so <hes> but at the same time i think that the women that do need to heal from their birth <hes> i want them to embrace that as well because so many don't and they just feel like it is what it is it that wasn't right and you didn't deserve deserve to be treated that way or made you feel that way. You absolutely have every right to be angry and sad and and feel those feelings until you don't anymore right yeah <hes> and also not being afraid to get help because talking with somebody that experience who can maybe sometimes it's even going back and reliving it and and working through those emotions and feelings can be can be really healing so absolutely but you you know no. We're good but it's just gonna say you're just you're such like an inspiration in your pages so amazing and i want to be able to let women find out where they can follow you at or find out more about you. "I thought that was <SpeakerChange> interesting. <Speech_Male> When <Speech_Male> you talk to Luke, or <Speech_Male> people who live <Speech_Male> alongside them in these <Speech_Male> towns or just people <Speech_Male> who, <Silence> who have been there awhile. <Speech_Male> What do they <Speech_Male> see happening <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> down the line <Speech_Male> is this going to slow <Speech_Male> down Kim towns, <Speech_Male> find a way <Speech_Male> to kind of balance <Speech_Male> the issues? They're <Speech_Male> dealing with right now. <Silence> I <SpeakerChange> believe <Speech_Male> that <Speech_Female> what Luke was trying to <Speech_Female> communicate to me, was <Speech_Female> that unless <Speech_Female> are legal <Speech_Female> systems start <Speech_Female> taking into account, <Speech_Female> the kind of holistic <Speech_Female> importance <Speech_Female> of these natural <Speech_Female> resources <Speech_Female> that poaching <Speech_Female> is just gonna kinda <Speech_Female> continue along the <Speech_Female> path that it's continued <Speech_Female> on and <SpeakerChange> that it <Speech_Female> may. May <Speech_Female> Abbott flow in <Speech_Female> terms of <SpeakerChange> market value <Speech_Female> of the wood, <Speech_Female> but the <Speech_Female> catalyst <SpeakerChange> reporting <Speech_Female> isn't going <Speech_Female> to <Silence> isn't going to change. <Speech_Female> And it's I <Speech_Female> think it's a larger societal <Speech_Female> issue in terms <Speech_Female> of. Okay. <Speech_Female> We're turning <Speech_Female> away from <Speech_Female> these logging <Speech_Female> and natural resource-based <Speech_Female> Connie's, <Speech_Female> which in many ways <Speech_Female> is like fantastic. <Speech_Female> But what are we gonna do <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> for the people <Speech_Female> that have <Speech_Female> worked in those <Speech_Female> communities? <SpeakerChange> <Silence> So what's being done <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> by the natural resource <Speech_Male> officers, or, <Speech_Male> I guess the departments <Speech_Male> they work for to <Speech_Male> try <Speech_Male> to stop this. <Speech_Male> I <SpeakerChange> think through <Speech_Female> Luke, they found <Speech_Female> someone who <Speech_Female> cares a lot <Speech_Female> and who has spent a <Speech_Female> lot of time, <Speech_Female> you know, in the field <Speech_Female> looking for these cases. <Speech_Female> And <Speech_Female> as part of that <Speech_Female> has taken on <Speech_Female> kind of additional <Speech_Female> outreach, <Speech_Female> and education <Speech_Female> work <Speech_Female> to prevent it. So <Speech_Female> he <Speech_Female> and his supervisor <Speech_Female> have been <Speech_Female> working <SpeakerChange> on <Speech_Female> installing <Speech_Female> signs <Speech_Female> in these protected <Speech_Female> areas. That <SpeakerChange> say, <Speech_Female> you know, by the way, <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> log. From here is <Speech_Female> prohibited. And if <Speech_Female> you see anyone do <Speech_Female> please call this number. <Speech_Female> So <Speech_Female> those weren't there before, <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> and they've also worked <Speech_Female> on meeting west <Speech_Female> crown lawyers <Speech_Female> who <Speech_Female> prosecute the cases <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> that they are <Speech_Female> keeping <SpeakerChange> track of <Speech_Female> and really <Speech_Female> trying to work with them <Speech_Female> in terms of <Speech_Female> getting <SpeakerChange> the financial <Speech_Female> penalty increased. <Speech_Female> What <Speech_Female> does <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Female> it depends? <Speech_Female> It depends on the <Speech_Female> on the tree <Speech_Female> that stolen in <Speech_Female> how much evidence they have <Speech_Female> at cetera. I'm <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> you know, something that I <Speech_Female> think is quite interesting. <Speech_Female> Is that it's considered <Speech_Female> a <Speech_Female> theft of property <Speech_Female> theft from the federal <Speech_Female> government or from the provincial <Speech_Female> government? <Speech_Female> So <Speech_Female> there's a threshold <Speech_Female> right in terms <Speech_Female> of theft under five <Speech_Female> thousand dollars <Speech_Female> over five thousand <Speech_Female> dollars and <Speech_Female> theft under five thousand <Speech_Female> dollars is very hard <Speech_Female> to convince <Speech_Female> you know, an overworked <Speech_Female> prosecutor <Speech_Female> to take on that <Speech_Female> case. <Speech_Female> And so <Speech_Female> if the majority of trees <Speech_Female> are going to be <SpeakerChange> valued <Speech_Female> under five <Speech_Female> thousand dollars, which <Speech_Female> they are <Speech_Female> it would take <Speech_Female> a pretty <Speech_Female> large. <Speech_Female> Case for <Speech_Female> a prosecutor <Speech_Female> to wanna take that forward, <Speech_Female> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Female> basically. <Speech_Female> And so <Speech_Female> by trying <Speech_Female> to educate <Speech_Female> prosecutors in <Speech_Female> terms of, you know, <Speech_Female> the, the dollar value <Speech_Female> on the market might <Speech_Female> be three thousand <Speech_Female> dollars. But <Speech_Female> overall <Speech_Female> it can be valued <Speech_Female> at much more than five <Speech_Female> thousand dollars due to <Speech_Female> the habitat provides <Speech_Female> and <Speech_Female> the benefits that <Speech_Female> it gives <Speech_Female> for instance, to our <Speech_Female> tourism industry, <Speech_Female> or <Speech_Female> to our recreation industry. <Speech_Female> That <Speech_Female> that's really what they're going <Speech_Female> for. That's how they're trying <Speech_Female> to convince <Speech_Female> more of <Speech_Female> war prosecutors <Speech_Female> to bring these <Speech_Female> cases forward <Speech_Female> and, and in doing so <Speech_Female> you know, making <Speech_Female> the stakes higher <Speech_Music_Female> so <Speech_Music_Female> that people <Speech_Music_Female> won't even <Speech_Music_Female> try to, <Speech_Music_Female> to steal the trees in the <Speech_Music_Female> first place. <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Music_Male> Thanks lindsay. "And so forth. So we can't have that. We're we're actually still working with him to make him better. Now, obviously, he is getting better I've been doing a lot of work with him and he's actually improving with cask she's being closer to wield chairs now. And when I. And it takes so much more work. So if people are testing their dogs at home, if your dog, if you make this loud, noise tests, and your dog runs from it or cowers from it or scared of it. He's probably not a candidate for visiting the hospital because that's the kind of thing that happens at the hospital. No, no, no, not true. That got me. Okay. You'll be candidates for hospital about their role in the hospital would be different as such as they can do deep pressure therapy, which is DP, and that's what most people want in a hostile like, especially in the geriatric ward or pediatric ward. They're actually finding in studies that people with brain injuries are actually recovering quicker from having a therapy dog. Okay. So DP that's touch is that when the dog actually climbs onto the person and leans his weight against them is that what you're talking about. And that helps her with brain injuries. Yes. They've actually been doing studies with it in the American Medical journal. There's been some major improvements with that. Now a therapy dog. Also can go to many different people. It's not just to one person. Actually, it's kinda funny. We're doing the radio show today on pets. Because actually, we have a client here who has one of our service dogs and their dog is actually I Caesar and stability. Okay. So that's really interesting. I had a standard poodle a year ago. Born that went it was here for longtime. She was here for a long time because she was supposed to go to a special needs person. And then that patient got taken into care. So the dog was no longer needed. So she came back and because she'd been partially trained. I kept it up and taught her to touch and do all these things then she went to Vancouver island, and she's now working for a child this little poodle fifty pounds standard poodle is now. Detecting seizures for this little girl. So the girl can go to school without her. Mum can go to normal school without her mom. She can have friends, but for me like how does that even happen? How do you teach dog to detect fusion for? Super easy. Yeah. The dots actually can usually detect or smell it before they happen. Because as you know, dogs were originally used to jacked breast cancer. I know that actually. Wow. Yeah. I know cancer supposed to smell sweet, but I don't think humans can smell it necessarily. No, no. And a lot of the tests that doctors do in the medical field to test for cancer, sometimes don't show. But actually, they're finding that these dogs can actually be Jack and smell cancer diabetes. Seizures, they just know. But they don't know. That's what we want. That's like when I train a dog to find the car. It's a big aha moment when he figures out that that's what I've been looking for does he knew where it was looking for. So how I guess you put the dog in the room with someone seizure being rewarded for learning you, and you just do this over and over. And then he starts earlier and earlier. Oh, I could see that. I could totally see almost all my dogs would do that. Especially my poodles 'cause they're very connected interesting. Yes. And that's why we have a probationary period when we put one of our dogs with a new handler because not always are they going to be a proper fit and while we're training. The handler with the service dog we are seeing how the bond is between handler and service dog. Oh, jen. Well, we have to go to a break we're gonna come back right after and we're going to talk a little more as I think about one more tests. They can do at home listeners can do at home with their dogs to see if they might be good for service, and we'll come back and give them that after the break. And maybe we'll hear a little bit from Sharon to when we come back. Stay tuned. Everybody to animal party on pet life radio. And we're talking to service dogs.

Magnetic Salmon

"Here's an moment of science trivia question Yale. Why is a guy salmon like a compass? What that's quite the riddle dying. Can you give me a hint we could do with magnets, well, compass points north thanks to the pull of the earth's geomagnetic field. But what does that have to do with fish quite a lot? In fact, it turns out that sockeye salmon are also sensitive to the earth's magnetic pool. Scientists have discovered evidence showing that salmon use a nifty trick called geomagnetic imprinting to find their way home to their birth. Rivers geomagnetic imprinting how so salmon can detect the precise geomagnetic feel of rivers location, and memorize it to help them return later. How did the scientists figure that out on allies migration? Data for guys, salmon, born and British Cologne. Via's Fraser river, this fish, leave the river to spend their adult life in the north Pacific Ocean two years later, they returned to spawn. Here's the thing though. They either have to swim around the north or the south end of Vancouver island to get back. The number of salmon using the northern route as steadily increased over the last century. And the scientists figured out that the IRS shifting geomagnetic fields were involved. Let me guess the magnetic field at the mouth of the Fraser river used to line up with the southern route. But these days it coincides with the northern passage instead, you've got it. And that is why Simon is like a compass and uses yours magnetic field appointed self in the right direction and find its way home. This moment of science comes from Indiana University on the web as a moment science dot org. I'm Don glass, and I'm Yale Cassandra.

I mean, just something that people put on their bucket list day, save up for it. It just seems to me like. A grand adventure. And honestly, I think I've seen some bloggers who have children have gone on this cruise. Instead, really good things about it. So even think that something that we would enjoy doing. Pretty easy trip all told with with a kid, I would think because you're on a cruise. They're taking care of you. "You tell me for how much because I'm looking at two headlines from one from Reuters. One from Bloomberg Reuters says, it's an eleven billion dollar deal. Bloomberg says, it's a six point. Eight billion dollars four point, four point, six billion dollars in between them. It's both actually because one headline as properly, including all the debt the being purchased, and the other one is just, this is what the equity looks like. And so if you look at the market gap of four city, it's about six point, eight billion dollars. So. Turns out that depending on what you're looking at as a shareholder or as a, you know, or as an enterprise, they're both. Correct. So is this I'm assuming this is being viewed as a good deal for both because both stocks are up Brookefield as management, much larger round of forty billion dollar market cap or so. So they're, they're paying a little bit of a premium, but not much of a premium. It seems like. Is what was your take when you saw this headline? So I am made longtime at Mirer of field asset management and their CEO Bruce flat started writing about them in two thousand and two. They are basically their capital generators and they do it by buying under under performing assets, dressing them up, either holding them or selling them. And so the fact that they've gone into get to buy by a city means that they see not so much opportunity in the current price, but they see that they can do some things impulsive levers and make this portfolio much more valuable in their hands and their track record. It's not perfect, but it's pretty good. So the fact that they're paying a premium to current cap rates doesn't really, you know, that doesn't raise any alarm bells with me who Brookfield asset management this. I think this might be the first time we've ever talked about on this podcast. The longtime company. We've talked about a lot in other places in the fool, but yeah, maybe where where do they sit in sort of the competitive landscape like when when you think about their competition, what types of companies are out there for NATO would be the biggest one? Yes. So they own. So Brookfield asset management owns, for example, one financial center. So directly across from the new World Trade Center, that's their property, they own, they either own properties, you know, really a lot of class a office space in New York around the world. They're based in Toronto. So a lot of Canadian, you know, a lot of Canadian property, but they also own things like there's a Brookefield homes, which is separately publicly traded company. And that's there's a own a portion of that. There's also other one called Brookefield infrastructure partners, which owns forest land like half Vancouver island in British Columbia is I say, half, I'm. Yeah, I'm exaggerating a little, but let let they own a lot of of Vancouver island timberland things like that. So they are they. They are a little bit agnostic as to what sort of assets they bought. But in terms of branding, not much of a leap to go from Brookefield asset management, which is in real estate to Brookefield homes. Unlike the branding leap that you showed me earlier today from about thirty five years ago, which was a picture I'd never seen before we should post this so we should send me, we'll post it on the market full review, but it was basically about thirty five years ago when Colgate. Colgate decided that they wanted to slap the Colgate brand Colgate, which synonymous with toothpaste pretty cited, a slap their brand on frozen lasagna. And it's not to say the Colgate can't be a conglomerate that owns a frozen food division, but nobody wants to nobody wants Colgate lasagna. What do you suppose we talked about this a little bit, but what do you suppose they were thinking like, is this something that's going to extend the brand? Hey, let's get your teeth really, really messy and then you've got. Yeah, it is. It is absolutely fascinating to be. And I think that one one of the most interesting things is is actually hurt the sales of their toothpaste, right? They pulled the it. It's not just that this product failed. It actually harmed the reputation of the of their cash cow. Well, that I have to assume that the calculus was the brand recognition for the toothpaste is so strong..
