"You good for you. How dare you trader to the south travis. I'm from florida. And so you know. I'm a traitor to the south. So you move out there. How long was it before you decided to take that acting class. Why did you decide was like everyone else is doing us a mines. We'll give it a shot. How did that happen. And what how. Many times go into that classic. Take for you to be like. I wanna keep keep doing this. Keep going forward. So is my second. Dan l. a. And i came out here. I come out a couple of months prior. And i got a print and a modeling agent and i got a job at red lobster so i had everything all set up for me los angeles. Red lobster lobsters. Great good to me. So right when i got into the acting class i immediately knew okay. Let me backtrack. I came out for the summer i was. I just finished up my junior college. And i came up for the summer just to see what was like and with in two days i started the acting class and i knew i was not going back to the university that i was at that was not going to go back and study business management. I was not going to go back to georgia just as my new destination. This is my new dream. It happened like that. And from there. I i i just. I threw myself into a jumped into every class. That i could. I surrounded myself with all sorts of actor friends and was was studying acting like crazy and it became an obsession am session. The hard core of sometimes an unhealthy obsession for for now almost two decades. How what's the first thing you booked first thing you remember booking. The first big thing was that so raven which was a really fun. I i got to be. I had visions. I could see the future. But only when i kissed raising it was it was this thing and i got to kiss the other girl in it and so i was in my twenties early twenties. And i'm thinking. Wow i get to hang out with pretty girls and i get. I get to get paid to make friends into kiss girls. This is amazing. Yes so that was it. That was a big one. Big one for me big win. I remember that is the thing that i really is. Double vision was. The there wasn't a joe. I watch episode of that either. Yeah i what is the thing because that was in a few other things from four here. What's the thing that you booked you went. Okay i'm never going to red lobster again. I'm going to do this. This is what. I'm doing good question. So i i transfer lobster to the chart house which was a classier restroom. Cheddar bay biscuits their biscuits. But we had a beautiful view the ocean and it was a good little job that i had and i looked a movie called accepted. Yeah really cool. College com hill and justin long blake. Lively really really good. Cast i booked that movie. I believe that was two thousand five and there was a particular ritual that happens at this restaurant. 'cause there's a lot of other artists and actors musicians in people that really chasing their dreams working as as on waitstaff. When ever you would transition from there and really be able to commit to your craft and work on your craft full-time and make a living with your with your art. You they would basically take. You would quit the restaurant they would take you out to the ocean and they would throw you in ritual things so they took the drag me down the ocean against my will see supposed to all types of the like dragging me. I'm fighting and suing the ocean. And i remember i just took my shoes and this is not the best choice to do for the environment but i took my shoes and it was very symbolic through them into the ocean and they said i will never work at a restaurant again. I will only make my living as an actor. Wow i mean if i would have stayed in that position for the next four minutes. I'm sure the shoes would have just come right back to try again. But i don't remember doing that. I just remember launching the shoes out and being like. I'm an actor fantastic while i asked us to every guest and most of them humor me a particularly memorable bad audition like you left. Wow that was awful. They're not calling anything like particularly bad. Yeah i'm still. That's just part of the deal is you're you're learning how to stick when you first started driving your car. You're not the best driver you know you have to really. You have to know how to use all your mirrors. You have to understand that. Other people are also driving in their own. Little worlds you you. You have a lot that you have to process all at once and it takes a long time to really find your groove and feel really good at it. And i think in the process of of understanding how to use my instrument and understanding what auditions were. An understanding that rejection is a huge part of the game I definitely felt my face a lot. I have one audition where i went in. I was supposed to play a cop. And i didn't know that you weren't supposed to run around the room in like like really pretend like i had this whole lake. Fake gun thing. And i remember like jump on the couch and i got up and i ran across. The church is trying to videotape me. This whole time and this is for a series regular role which clearly wasn't ready. And a lotta times in addition you you just want to be subtle you wanna get in there and get out and you can. If you have to have a big moment where you you pull a gun on somebody you can do it with. Just look and it doesn't have to be this whole thing where you're running around so i think i left out audition thinking i did. Great rushed it and the feedback. That i got was that that it's never gonna happen and then like i need to calm down a little bit not try so hard. I mean i've had people tell me terrible things after dishes before. And it's just part of the deal is part of the learning kirk. I love it. We're gonna take a quick break. We're gonna be back here like the homework back. I don't usually ask about working with other actors but my my producer tracy would kill me. You've done episode of malcolm in the middle. She's the biggest. Frankie muniz fan house. Frankie frankie is great this. This was a long time ago back actually play basketball with a couple of times afterwards. And he's he's really down to earth really lay back and just good dude so i. I only have good good experiences with them. Is there anybody we'd ask you about. You would say negative things about. I would say no comment like house working for michael bay. You know you can say dude. The genius he's he's he knows what he's doing with that question he's he he. Actually this guy knows his stuff he smart dude. He knows he knows exactly what he's making. I was just seeing what i'd get their shot you now. You're all everybody we talked to their. Imdb filmography is eclectic yours even seemingly more so than others. I mean you've been in a ton of sitcoms people have heard of and tv dramas and big time movies. A horror movies action movies. Is there a particular fit for you that you think is your.

Love it. well let's take us back eighteen plus years to win before you were an actor kind of how did you get interested in it did. Was it what you want it to be as a kid. What kind of made you finally take the leap into acting Seventeen years ago so definitely didn't see it happening as a kid. I wanted to be in the nfl for a long time. Where are you from. I'm from georgia. You okay right here. Allina we're in greenville. So about two hours from atlanta were you a falcons. Fan love when michael came through. That was amazing. But i was always a redskins fan before i talk any further. How do i change it to our. I'm not just looking. I'm looking at myself on two screens face twice. It's just whenever you whenever you go. We're changing the screens. Here live for video. And so whenever television travis for that hit my face in front of the camera. I'm kidding i'm how so. How do i just not see. Mice just just could just cover your eyes because it's gonna look above it and talk okay so i'll just okay. Yes i always wanted to be in in the nfl. And i never really thought about being an actor. But i used to have my mom's friend. Tammy darby she would always tell me that. I needed to model needed to act. I needed to be in from the cameras. Tammy tammy always. There's always a tammy around. And so that kind of got the idea. Percolating think and then my friend in in high school he was an abercrombie and fitch model and all the girls. He's like on the bags of the posters and the girls were very much into him. I asked like how did you do that. Don't do that and He introduced me to his agency. And i submit a photo and i submitted a photo of pot that i had are big time kind a football and i sent a photo of me doing that and they they were like. You're the the pig i come in. Let's talk and when i started college. I got into a little bit of modeling and like i was in walmart. That's when i knew. I really made it. I made it into had a big spread inside of walmart. And i remember that. Spread those a good spread Jerry memorable memorable. But i started. I started getting in front of the camera modeling. I i never really thought about acting. I had to do one scene in high school for a drama class. That's the only time i've i've ever acted beforehand and i had to play drunk driving a car for all who can hollerin' and we're on stage and we're In a car and something happens in crash and then we all die. Fall out of the car. That's the only thing. I remember about acting hope that it's not symbolic my career for like a psa or like a very special episode like why are we doing. That seem guess. Our teacher was just trying to to give us lessons through art. And it it Yeah i remember having a good time and be frightened at my. I was so scared to do that. Scene in front of everybody but it was exhilarating. So i don't know i never really thought about. It never really thought about being an actor until i came out to los angeles for the summer and then it just jumped into an acting class. I was like. I'm feeling all these things and i wanna keep feeling these things and i was just off to the races could be me i. I'm from south carolina. I've been a southerner my whole life. I don't detect a big accents with you at all like a big southern accent. Is that something you worked out of. And just got rid of over the years living in los angeles or is that something that you just never had grown up like a lot of people to gateway words to the southern dialect. Y'all fixing yup. Fixing to get ready every time. Cut cut those out and you're southern accent will disappear dissolve into the background and i think i had casting director pretty early on. Tell me that i was. I had a southern accent. And i was surprised. No i don't roth and at that moment. I started to work going forward on relieving myself. This accident so when you come home to the south do you get the accident back. Does it all right back into it..

She said Gosh how long have you been away? only a night rip said, but he suddenly wasn't sure he thought about his rusted Musket, his long and wild beard, those strange men and their strange punch. I lived here for five years and I've never seen you before said, one of the INN's patrons and a chorus of voices all agreed. Do you know Dame winkle has anyone seen. Dame winkle rip asked. She moved West about fifteen years ago with a new husband said the lady after a first husband never came back from the mountains. She met a nice man and moved on and I will say that Hubby number two is a real cutie. What who never came back I'm back I'm Rip Van Winkle. Or Not said the man that's rid-. "Soft grass and shade it is. He said stumbling out of the cave with the dog on his heels. He's sprawled into the grass and was pleased to find that it was as soft as advertised. All right. Good nap wolf he said stretching out. Said Wolfe stretching right out next to him. Together, they fell into a deep and peaceful sleep. The good long rest that Rip van winkle had only dreamed about. He awoke the Sun was low and golden on the horizon like warm butter on toast. He stretched his arms and rubbed Wolf who stretched his paws and yawned mightily. Oh man that was a proper nap rip said best we get home before dark though roof roof agreed wolf. Rip Sat up and was shocked to find that Wolf was as fluffy as a sheep his for out wide in every direction. He was surprised. But not as surprised as when he realized his own hair and beard had grown while he slept kid had a little brown stubble that morning. But now it was a fine silver flow down to nearly his waist. All what was in that punch we drank. Wolves shook himself and a small mountain of further shed free. Go we better get home. Rip grabbed his Musket and was again shocked when it fell to. In his hand the medal was rusted through and the would was green and rotted. What. In the world he said looking down at his ruined weapon. I think someone's playing a joke on us. Wolf agreed. Rip Van Winkle shook his head and started down the mountain trail Wolf Shuffling along beside him. The forest around him seemed a little strange. He couldn't put his finger on exactly what was different the cliffs in the mountain were utterly unchanged but something about the trail itself seemed just a little off. He shook his head new beard waggling and pushed onto town. But town was different to. What. How old rip whispered to Wolf Wolf whispered back. The town rip was much the same as the one he left, but there were more buildings. Some were taller others had been updated and painted fresh. Still he saw the old kings in standing like always at the center of town and he headed that way to get his bearings. Got Closer though he saw that even the in had changed, the English flag was gone replaced with some stars and stripes even the picture of King George had changed replaced by some American general named Washington. What was in that paunch? He asked himself again. A crowd of arguing people emerged from the in and when they saw rip standing there in the street they circled around him. Excuse me Yes. Excuse me. "What do you think wolf? He asks the dog sprawling onto his back who seems like a good place to haunt to me. Wolf spun a Half Dozen Times Doug at the ground and then sprawled out right beside his owner. Rips smiled in the shade enjoying his favorite pastime until he heard the sounds of someone struggling nearby. He cocked one eye open and tilted his head to listen and Wolf did the same. PROBABLY NOTHING RIP SAID LAYING HIS HEAD BACK DOWN Oh my good- back called the voice nearby. Rip Beyond and rolled up to his feet he was lazy but he wasn't about to let someone get hurt. Easy Buddy, he called into the trees coming to help. Through called. Wolf. Sorry man that's right. RIP said we're coming to help. Rip. Stumbled back onto the trail and found a strange old man carrying a strange old sailors keg. A. Keg is a big barrel for holding drinks and this was the biggest barely won that rip had seen. The man himself was tall and slender with strange pants that bunched at the knee and lots of fancy jackets with lots of fancy buttons. Glut me help is spell rip said taking the keg onto his own shoulder where you're headed friend. Dongku and thanks the man said, these old shoulders aren't as strong as they used to be. He pointed up the catskills to a craggy cave mouth. I'm meeting my friends up there. This is the punch for our game today the old man said. As, Rip Van Winkle and Wolf craned their necks to look at the cave. They were shaken by a sudden burst of thunder like a fist punching through the sky it roared out of the mouth of the cave and a chorus of muffled voices cheered. Where late for the game, the old man said quick with that punch now and you could have a glass or to. Rip had gotten awfully thirsty carrying the keg and he was curious but also a little afraid to see what the thunder was all about..

"Rip Van Winkle. Once, upon a time, there was a pleasant ruddy man named Rip Van Winkle. He lived in a small town in the catskill mountains on a farm with his wife, his son and an old dog named Wolf. Rip Van Winkle was Nice enough. But he was also as lazy as a person can be always finding ways to wiggle out of work. He was happy enough to help his neighbors with a bag here and a bucket there but he saw no benefit to working at home preferring to lay around with wolf in the shade. To be fair, his little farm mostly grew weeds and stunted cabbages and most of those were eaten by his. MANGY cow. Come on now George Rip would say while he scratched her fondly behind the ears we've got to leave some cabbage for the Soup K. The cow would just move back at him crunching and chewing and paying him. No mind at all. Rip had named his Cow George after the King of England, declaring them to be equally useless and difficult. This was in the early days before America was its own country back. Then the states were just a colony of England and were ruled from far away by the English King? George third. A lot of Americans didn't think it was a very fair way to be ruled, but they haven't quite decided what to do about it yet. In the same way dame winkle rips wife hadn't quite decided what to do about her lazy husband at first she was always trying to get him to help out but she quickly found that to be a losing battle. Over the years, they had figured out a system though on his days off, rip was free to go off to hunt or fish as long as he came home with a big trout or a rabbit for dinner, he was free to nap away most of the day in the shade with his dog the two were perfect pair sprawled and snoring with rips grabby backpack for a pillow..

Ocd and anxiety These are not the things I'm used to like washing. The hands is not my thing. You know checking doors or you know not talking to people and so. I've learned to adapt right so I think it's it's a really beat Florida about adapting and and how our anxiety is you know it can be real and you know we. We talk a lot about What's the word you use the Rip Van Winkle. Yeah no but sort of like just sort of like over thinking things and thinking like Oh. This isn't a catastrophic catastrophic thinking. That's all right. Thank you and and at this point we can think that way and I think that that's in in a very strange way Very welcome for those of us who have catastrophic thinking it's like okay Yeah yeah one thing that like. I can't remember if you and me were talking about this I forget who I spoke about anything on Zoom meeting with the I know. Yeah totally but like I. I've been feeling like Like my in a weird way. I felt like finally relieved in a way. Oh well yeah absolutely but like that my like my like anxiety and vigilance about the world and its dangers and being safe that like other people were finally like thinking about that too and there are many people who think about that all the time because there are plenty of people in our country who are under extreme threat all the time just by virtue of they are but but like. I think that until this happened and like reality set in for a lot of people There were there. Were just a lot of people who aren't accustomed to thinking about what it means to live in uncertainty and to feel you know that the state not only will not protect you but is actively harming you And that there's chaos outside your doors and all the stuff and there's something about like people kind of also realizing that that's happening that made me feel like finally people are getting what I've always gotten like you know just because like we. We all have our own things that were bringing to everything in like my one of the things I bring to. Everything is being hyper vigilant and being like Yeah like thinking catastrophically cause me to spiral and have like not unproductive thoughts but cows probably thinking is also what has like my my like history of catastrophic making my propensity for it is. "On the line with us is Rebecca Stott. She's a professor of English literature and creative writing at the university of East Anglia. Hello, Rebecca. Thank you so much for being here today. That's all right. Plush tell us a little bit about your childhood as described in your memoir. I grew up in. I'm what seemed to me a perfectly normal family, but which was of course highly unusual. In the I was born fourth generation in to an extreme Christian fundamentalist cult important. Some people would say somebody say sect. The important thing about it is that they were set protests. So we kept away from the rest of the world. The exclusive brethren has that cooled practice extremes have participated on an extreme form of Calvinism really. So though I went to an ordinary school, I didn't. I wasn't really allowed to speak to the other children. We didn't really have books. We went to meeting something like eleven times a week for an hour. The women didn't speak in meeting. They went to loud too, and there was a lot of biblical exegesis which was largely unfathomable to four or five year old child. We had no television radio newspapers. No pets. No risk for is the idea was that we lived in as peel away as possible with no contact with the outside world. So, yeah, unusually. And when was this? I was growing up in the middle of the sixties in a tone in the UK cooled, Brighton which is so to hippie central, really, all sorts of weird and wonderful things were going on in the sort of revolution of the sixties. They'll Monson Roka's in in Brighton and and yeah, wild music, wild jaaz festivals until him. But we, we missed. If. That wasn't is sometimes as a child who we would as children with the us. You know, be rushed past television shops in case we saw anything in in the televisions that were often on in the windows. And occasionally we hear music tripping out of cafes. But by the time we left, I was about six or seven. My father had been in the brethren, all his life. He was in his thirties, and his friends told me later that he hasn't even had the Beatles, which given it was nineteen seventeen. When we left was pretty extrordinary. His friends described him as like rip van winkle. He was a preacher on gem. He might grandfather was too, and but they had really successfully managed to live a rip van winkle kind of separatist life. What were you told about the outside world? We were told that the outside world belong to say ten and that if we had contact with it. We would be am seduced by that. People were out to get us that they were Satan's people that they would trick us. They would. They would corrupt us on that. It was highly dangerous. So of course, if you parents in your grandparents and everyone, you know in the world around you is telling you that as a fact, it's very hard to imagine that they might have misunderstood all be misrepresenting things or exaggerating things isn't Shanto to a loss of brethren who grew up expiratory, who grew up presided, and you know, do internalize all of these things and believe what you'll being told and it gets transformed a child mind into pretty scary. Imaginings. I used to look at the people in the street and think you know about just try to work out. How sinful they were and how corrupt they were. And yet coups all quite baffling because they will say look like us. So yeah, that was how did what the brethren believed differ from sort of mainstream Christianity. There extemely fundamentalist beliefs based largely on pools writings and on a very small number of verses from polls writing which emphasize separation and purity living here to say. In some ways, very early brethren were were extremely gala. -tarian extremely wanted to very simple life broke away from the established church. This is in Dublin, and the eighteen thirties as they practiced more and more extreme separatism. And they made lots and lots of emphasis on be not equally yoked with unbelievers was the line that was quoted a great deal, and also. We live in the wealth, but we are not of the weld with enough that mantra. That was often said by the sixties to become so extreme because it had been taken over by nearly and he emphasized up salute rigid separation. And that meant separating families..
