She is chief economist and she was interviewed right here on Bloomberg Markets. Absolutely so the leading economic Click Indicator fell again for I think the 14th consecutive month and the This weakness is definitely in expectations from the ISM in terms of manufacturing and also from consumers percent and then the yield curve continued to be negative and also the leading credit credit indicator was negative. So that's all telling us that there's still some weakness out there. There's still percent. And you can hear more of that percent. Thanks for watching. Boeing's biggest supplier Spirit Aero Systems Holdings suspended production after union workers voted to strike again recapping stocks are mixed of the Dow lower S &P higher by five up by one tenth of one percent. I'm Charlie Pellett and that is a Bloomberg Business Flash. Charlie Pellett, thank you much. so We appreciate that. Jess Mendt and Paul Sweeney here in the Bloomberg Interactive Broker Studio. You know Jess, earlier this month I was at the BNY Mellon's Insight Conference down in Orlando. That's right. And they bring a lot of financial advisors there and a lot of financial advisors were saying their clients want more access and more exposure I guess to alternative investments and you know they were talking about private equity you know private debt digital hedge funds all that kind of stuff so interesting really to me that it's not just an institutional product but a lot of retail folks want to get access to it as well so our next guest is very timely claire van wick allen managing director and head of canada for aima and aima is a global association for hedge funds private credit and digital assets claire thanks so for much joining us here alternative investments here give us a lay of the land about how the flow of funds have been into just you know alternatives uh just generally speaking over the last several thank you so much for having me and as you noted aim is a global association representing primarily the hedge fund private credit and now digital asset industries uh though uh alternative investments across the board are expected to nearly double in aum by 27 with 23 trillion expected to be allocated across all alternative asset assets um and in your opening remarks you noted the interest from retail um that's certainly a trend that has persisted here in canada where we've always had a very robust wealth management channel interested in alternatives but that has only heightened uh over the last couple of years and we've seen increased flows across particularly private market investments private equity in particular private credit to name a second infrastructure and real estate following uh off the back of that but also on the hedge fund side there's a lot of demand given how choppy markets have been uh and last year hedge funds in particular really proved their worth to help provide downside protection in a volatile market what do you think the catalyst was for retail investors to want these alternative investments at least for the canadian space we've a very got strong high net worth and ultra high net worth representation within canadian wealth management and i think that type of clientele certainly is looking to preserve wealth and grow it over time and so i think that's a factor where alternative investments can can again provide downside protection non -correlated returns and smooth the turn profile of a portfolio but also gives these high net worth and ultra high net worth individuals access to very niche opportunities which i do think are very exciting the other driver though of course has been at least in the canadian context the advent of liquid alts where we've seen the hedge fund structure now be able to be offered in a more liquid format similar to what you have in the u s uh... with alternative forty act funds claire to us about talk the uh... the private credit business it's been an area that's attracted a tremendous amount of capital over the last decade i would say i mean most people know about private equity but less so about private credit what you seeing in terms of that part of the market uh... we're hearing across the board and that uh... a lot of institutions are planning to double in some cases private credit the latest stats from prequent show that thirty percent of institutions are allocating to private credit with an average allocation of six point two percent and a lot of uh... the drive behind this increase of interest in private credit is that we've seen that bank retrenchment obviously made only worse by regulation but also situations like the collapse of SVB and then of course following on with first republic and there's a lot of concern and generally that there may be other issues with regional banks in the US and obviously capital provided by private credit lenders are key funding mechanisms from a cash perspective, funding M &A transactions and just general working capital. I interesting think an stat in private credit is many of the borrowers oftentimes are working with firms or organizations that they know really well with 40 % of loans being to repeat borrowers. Since we're almost halfway through this year, what do you think is in store for the hedge fund industry in the second half of 2023? We would expect it to grow. We're hearing from institutional allocators that again they are looking to grow their allocations and hedge funds given the current market conditions. Recent data from Prequin, 37 % of institutions are allocating to hedge funds with an average allocation of 12 .2 %. Some of the recent sub strategies within hedge funds that seem to be really of interest include multi -strategy, global macro, long short credit and distressed opportunities. And of course as we continue to see the markets march on and whether we hit a recession not, or there's certainly a lot more stress within some companies and so there is a lot of expectation that default rates will slowly rise and increase in bankruptcies and there may be more distressed opportunities both in the hedge fund and private credit its positions as frequently as it should we absolutely believe that they are marked at a reasonable rate again stability is an intentional feature of private equity and GPs in particular know their businesses really really well many GPs of course are engaging with third party valuation firms institutional indicators are demanding a lot of questions and providing oversight and on their side to potentially third party valuations of private equity holdings generally what we've heard across the board both at conferences and in our allocator only peer groups are that private equity valuations are generally fairly valued in this market though again slight concerns about you know as the market and potential recession may loom as something that they're watching really closely and they're slowing the pace of further commitments given that they're faced with the denominator effect already all right claire thanks so much for joining us really appreciate getting your thoughts there clan van wick allen managing director head of canada for a i m a a i m a is a global association for hedge funds private credit and digital assets uh... so we're looking so at these markets right here a pretty much unchanged for the s and p five hundred organ of more art Let's get some company news right now with Steve Rappaport. "Long story short, not to go full Californians on you here, but there is a split once you get down close to our establishment here on the campus of AT&T. Where you can continue on the four O 5 to go to the one O 5. Or you can get off the four O 5 and take streets underneath the one on 5. And I've been coming to this show commuting now for 8 plus years. And to this day, I still don't know which route is faster because the one O 5 freeway sometimes has traffic on it and going underneath it, it could be faster. And one O 5 in case people might not know, very famous in the movie speed, also about another female driver who is driving with reckless abandonment. In a large vehicle. So you take the huge turns correct. And it can be the van wick of California. 'cause it involves sometimes that's the one way you could take a freeway to the airport that's near here. And there's sometimes backup or whatever. So here I thought to myself, this is an amazing opportunity because we were now neck and neck. As she continued on the four O 5 to go, the one O 5. I'm like, you know what? I'm going to take the other way. I'm going to use this opportunity to actually find out which is faster knowing as I am going the speed limit underneath the one O 5 and stopping for red lights. And that's when you take the right side of the four or 5 that take that. TJ, I was thinking to myself, why is he letting me pass it? So I'm like, as I'm going and I'm going to do this properly, I'm going to not speed. I'm going to stop at red lights unlike other people. And I'm going to see which is faster. So sure enough, I pull into the garage, and I'm first. So pissed. It's awesome. Not only am I first, she's not even here yet. Which allows me now the opportunity to stand there and wait for her and have her drive up and not only see that she isn't here first, but to have me waiting for it. Totally waiting and just holding the door open. So annoying. Like the gentleman that I am. And I snapped a photograph of Susie's reaction in there. It is. There it is. What's up? How did you get here? There it is. That's it. How did you get here? I actually snapped another photo of that guy. You know, I love Susie and I will never want to go against her for anything. Go for it. As they said on Breaking Bad, you're about to break bad here. Into the parking structure, I kind of noticed her car. It was hard to miss. And the way she was parked. Let's just say she's pig parked. I'm gonna say that if her car gets towed, do we have a photograph of that? I wouldn't be surprised. I sit at the Hoskins earlier this morning. I think. But Mike knows where his blood and donuts are buttered. What photo he's like? I did, I texted to him this morning. Must have been a bad connection here. All I'm saying is this. I now know thanks to you, which is a faster route and I'm going to take that exercise. He was so smug. No, it wasn't. He sat there with the United States. I was happy to be here. Are you in time to do it? Let you win. I was so excited to pull in and stare you down. There you go. Oh, that was so upset. That's our latest commute story. That's amazing. You're welcome, TJ. I did bring a box, though, that had his name on it at the house. And I immediately put it in my car and brought it down. You loved Lala canton Vanderpump rules. Now get to know her on give them Lala. With her assistant Jess. What you did not see is when Raquel arrives and she wants to talk to me. I made her sit in a corner. Explain a corner booth all by herself in the dark. "Futures are higher this morning. It is 5 O one on Wall Street. I mean, check the markets every 15 minutes throughout the trading day on Bloomberg. Right now, S&P futures are up 40 points. Down futures of 261 in NASDAQ futures up 144, ten year treasury down 5 30 seconds to yield 4.03% yield on the two year 4.46% and nymex crude oil is down 6 tenths of a percent. Nathan. Carrying the rise in futures follows yesterday's powerful rally on Wall Street. The S&P 500 gained 2.7% while the tech heavy NASDAQ surged 3.4%. David deetz senior investment strategist at ppac private wealth says it was only a matter of time for a bounce. We don't know whether we've seen the bottom in this cyclical downturn. But we do know that the conditions are primed for better returns going forward. I mean, we start with the fact that we're down 25% year to date on the broad market. 35% on the NASDAQ. That alone should wet the appetite of all bargain hunters. David dietz a pre packed private wealth notes the S&P closed above a key technical support lovely yesterday. Still Nathan's stocks have further room to fall that's according to the latest fund manager survey from Bank of America. The respondents expect stocks to bottom in the first half of next year after the fed finally pivots away from hiking rates. Right now, according to the survey investors have 6.3% of their portfolios and cash, that's the highest level since April of 2001, 49% of participants are underweight equities. In Europe today, Karen, we're hearing from Liz truss, the UK prime minister says she's sorry for going too far too fast after her new Chancellor gutted most of her economic plan. We have made mistakes. I'm sorry for those mistakes. But I fixed the mistakes. I've appointed a new Chancellor. We have restored economic stability in fiscal discipline and what I now want to do is go on and deliver for the public. Prime minister Liz truss made the comments in an interview with the BBC. One other note this morning, the Financial Times is reporting the Bank of England will likely delay its planned sale of government bonds on October 31st, but the Bank of England is refuting that report. While back here in the U.S., Nathan, we wrap up earnings from the big banks today with Goldman Sachs reporting this morning. And here are the preview is Bloomberg's Jeff Bellinger. Goldman's revenue and profit were boosted by investment gains in the third quarter last year, Bloomberg intelligence expects to hear that the numbers were lower in the just ended quarter, which saw a slide in banking fees and a stock market performance that likely weighed on its asset management business. Investors will be interested in what executives have to say about the future, Bloomberg reported last month that Goldman was beginning the biggest round of job cuts since the start of the pandemic and just yesterday Wells Fargo analyst Mike Mayo said Goldman is planning a major reorganization. Jeff Bellinger, Bloomberg daybreak. Jeff, thanks, Goldman's earnings coming a day after Bank of America reported its highest quarterly net interest income in at least a decade. We caught up with CEO Brian moynihan, he says the U.S. consumer is still spending. The credit quality and a credit quality of Bank of America in our consumer books is very strong across the board. The payment delinquencies are much slower and they were pay pandemic, much lower than they were in any average 5 best year type period. And yes, they moved a little bit off the floor, but they're still much lower than they been. So consumers are spending. They have money, their employee. You can see the unemployment numbers and have good credit. Bank of America's CEO Brian moynihan made the comments in an interview with Bloomberg's David Westin. Stay tuned for more of that conversation coming up shortly on Bloomberg daybreak. Meantime, Nathan, we're seeing many companies try to diversify their leadership ranks, but that effort could be getting harder as women leave top tier jobs at higher rates than ever before. A report from McKinsey and lean in dot org finds that for every woman who gets promoted at the director level two women choose to leave, a lack of affordable child care is part of the reason. Also, a gender pay gap that had been narrowing before the pandemic is now stalling. Starting to Washington now, Karen, The White House is watching energy prices closely, and now we're told the Biden administration is making moves to ensure the price of gas doesn't go even higher. Amy Morris has details from our Bloomberg 99 one newsroom in Washington. Energy department officials have been quietly meeting this week with oil companies to let them know what to expect. Sources tell Bloomberg news officials are prepared to release up to 15 million barrels of oil from the nation's emergency stockpile to keep prices steady. We also expect to hear plans from the Biden administration this week about how to replenish that stockpile. Also, the administration is looking at limiting fuel exports to keep more gasoline and diesel inside the U.S., a more dramatic step that sources say would not happen before the midterms. In Washington, I'm Amy Morris Bloomberg daybreak. All right, Amy, thank you. And on the geopolitical stage this morning, China and Taiwan are in focus, the USS Beijing could move to seize Taiwan on a much faster timeline than previously thought Bloomberg's at Baxter has that story. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is responding to Xi Jinping's address to the People's Congress over the weekend, blinken says there's been a change in the approach over the past several years toward Taiwan, but says now China has made a fundamental decision that the state is quo is no longer acceptable and that Beijing is determined to pursue reunification on a much faster timeline. Having said that, blinken says there's eagerness to cooperate on share interest, given that she will be serving a third term. In San Francisco, I'm Ed Baxter Bloomberg daybreak. Thanks, Ed S&P futures now up 41 point style futures up 280. NASDAQ futures are higher by a 146 points, ten year treasury is down 6 30 seconds, yield 4.03%, and nymex crude is down 6 tenths percent at $84 94 cents a barrel. More coming up in traffic for Michael bark with what else is going on in New York and around the world, Michael. Thank you very much. Hurricane is gaining strength on a path toward Florida. It is threatening to become the worst storm to hit Tampa in over a century. The national hurricane center says Ian is now a category three storm, mandatory evacuations are in parts of Florida. State emergency management director Kevin Guthrie is in pinellas county. We do have telephone companies on standby ready to restore critical cellular service that powers loss. But in the meantime, Florida should be prepared to have a communications plan in place with their families. Bloomberg meteorologist rob Carolyn has the latest on Ian. Michael hurricane Ian made landfall over western Cuba earlier this morning's major hurricane with sustained winds of a 115 miles an hour, it will reemerge in the eastern Gulf of Mexico later this morning, and then re strengthen and work its way up towards the Tampa area, looks like it will be making landfall somewhere in pinellas county late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. And the problem with the storm is it will be very strong at that time, it's also going to stall out and it looks like it is going to rake the Tampa area for maybe 24 to 36 hours with high winds heavy rain and storm surges. Michael, rob, thank you, sir. We're learning that a small tornado touchdown on Long Island last Sunday Night. "At the personal level. Finally, this has been announced word broke today that three four three is restructuring some of their top leadership and that Bonnie Ross who's been the leader for that company and with MS four longer than 15 years is retiring from the business completely. Inner place, they're going to be splitting her prior duties to three other leads. I've had this video primed for a while as well as some of my thoughts on this switch and it's been sort of a long time coming, so here are some of the reasons why I think this is a good idea and some of the traps that Microsoft could still fall into. One thing I want to do is read Bonnie's going away Twitter that she did. She said, wow, I hope to stay with halo until we release the winter update. I'm letting you know I'm believing three four three and attending to a family medical issue. I'm incredibly proud of the work everyone at three four three industries has done with halo infinite, the Master Chief collection, the halo television series and so much more. It has been an honor to serve alongside the team for the last 15 years to be a part of the universe that I love. And she goes on to just congratulate everybody. I just want to point out that you can very clearly see in that writing that she was planning on leaving already and prior to the winter update. And the interior choice isn't exactly what happened. We'll probably never know it'll be a little bit like when Shane left PlayStation, but I just wanted to point that out that you can definitely tell in that language and that's certainly been something that's been rumored around behind the scenes. First thing is first, though, with Bonnie Ross leaving, splitting that up into three different people. We're going to look at how that's actually working. Peter hints. Brian koskey and Elizabeth van wick will take all of Bonnie's duties and split them and I think this is a tremendous idea and something three four three internally has really sort of been churning around for a while trying to figure out exactly how everything was going to come together and how to do this. This happens at other companies as well. When a business or an IP like this grows up so quickly that you end up giving a lot of duties to what you would consider to be a bottleneck and that ends up falling apart. Now this isn't the only issues with. First, let's remember Bonnie was handling the games. She was also helping out with the TV show, the media projects, and this is just too much for one person.

"To the van wick, more coming up in traffic first John Tucker with more on what's happening in New York and around the world, John. And Nathan's Secretary of State Anthony blinken has made an unannounced visit to Ukraine today. The trip is blinken's third since the start of Russia's invasion in February. It means I'm President Biden will hold a video call today with allies that talks will focus on the next steps to support Ukraine. The Pentagon has also said Ukraine its most accurate artillery shell, the GPS guided excalibur, according to budget documents. One of the last remaining government mandates of the pandemic has now been lifted. That's good more this morning, and this report from Bloomberg's Lisa Matteo. New York governor Kathy hochul has lifted the state's mask requirement for public transit. It comes after months of confusion among commuters by varying national state and local rules on where face coverings are required. The governor says COVID numbers are stable, putting the state in a good place now, effective immediately, masks will no longer be required for mass transit correctional facilities and shelters, mass mandates remain in effect at nursing homes, as well as other healthcare facilities regulated by the state. Mass compliance on New York City's subways buses and commuter trains had waned over the past few months. Lisa Matteo, Bloomberg, daybreak. Another mass shooting in Memphis, four people were killed, three others injured in a shooting spree that held the city hostage for hours last night. Police say 19 year old Ezekiel Kelly drove around randomly shooting people while live streaming on Facebook. He was taken into custody, court records show Kelly hit a previous first degree murder charge, but pleaded down to aggravated assault, serving just 11 months, Memphis mayor Jim Strickland was outraged and blamed at lenient judicial system. I'm tired of our police officers arresting the same people over and over and over and those people committing violent acts. The shooting comes the same week, Memphis police found the body of a missing teacher Eliza Fletcher. The second suspect wanted in the stemming rampage in Canada has died, miles Sanderson was taken into custody yesterday. Police say he went into medical distress shortly thereafter and died, miles and his brother Damian had been on the run in Saskatchewan since Sunday, accused of stabbing, killed ten people and left 19 others injured, Damien was found dead in a field near the stamping sites on Monday. A federal judge has granted the former president's request for a third party known as a special master to review the records. By appointing a special master who can take weeks, months, who knows how long to review all 11,000 or so items that were seized and make determinations on attorney client privilege and here's a surprising executive privilege. This is going to stop the Department of Justice in its tracks. Former federal prosecutor Jeff Robbins said that judge in the case, Eileen cannon was appointed by former president Trump in the final months of his administration. California utilities president Dallas Reynolds says the state narrowly avoided rolling blackouts yesterday, temperatures could hit a 115° in some parts of the state today. Well, turning to the economy now, Nathan, the Federal Reserve's beige book takes center stage on this week's economic agenda, but get more from Bloomberg so Vinny del giudice. The fed's regional survey the beige book is set for Wednesday will help illustrate inflation's impact on American businesses. We know already wage growth moderated in August, evidence this sphere's fed rate hikes could be tampering inflation. Another report to keep an eye on is today's ISM service industry index in July at rose for the first time since March recovering from a two year low in June. Jobless claims data Thursday should signal a positive outlook. Bloomberg daybreak. All right Vinny, thank you, Wall Street, returns to a holiday shortened trading week and traders get back to their desks with questions about the economic outlook and what it means for corporate earnings. Bloomberg's Charlie pellet reports. September is historically a rocky month for U.S. equity markets over the past 25 years. The S&P 500 Index has seen average declines of 7 tenths of 1%. Concern that rising rates will hurt growth has been weighing on corporate earnings. Lisa Erickson is head of traditional investments at U.S. bank wealth management. We do think it's going to be key to see how earnings evolve in the second half of the year. Our base case is that we are going to see continued slowing growth, not necessarily a full on route. "Wall Street, good morning. I'm Nathan Hager. And I'm Karen Moscow, we're just about four hours away from the open of U.S. trading. Let's get you up to date in the news you need to know what this shower would begin with day two of congressional testimony from Jay Powell. This morning the fed share appears before the House financial services committee. Yesterday was his most explicit acknowledgment yet that raising interest rates could lead to a recession. You're seeing growth slow from the very elevated levels of last year associated with the reopening. You're seeing the beginnings of job growth slowing to more sustainable levels. And there's risk in that. There's obviously risk in that that we monetary policy is famously a blunt tool. And there's risk that weaker outcomes are certainly possible, but they're not our intent. Fed shared J Powell told lawmakers the economy is strong and well positioned to handle tighter monetary policy. Markets gave up early gains Karen on pals recession comments, Jeanette Garret chief economist with Robertson Stevens says, as recession talk grows, we could see inflation start to come down. I don't think it's firmly rooted and there are awful lot of people who are now beginning to think about recession. And in thinking about recession actually do believe that that will take the pressure off prices. Jeannette garrity with Robertson Stevens says she believes Jay Powell's credibility is no longer an issue. Well, it's turned to oil now, Nathan, which is lower once again as concerns over a global economic slowdown intensify, meantime President Biden is continuing his push to ease gas prices. Bloomberg need a young joins us live with more good morning Renee. Good morning, Karen. I call on the companies to pass this along every penny of this 18th century reduction to the consumers. This is there's no time now for profiteering. It's a long shot for President Biden as lawmakers on both sides of the aisle quickly signal they have little appetite for the move. Live in New York, I'm renita young Bloomberg daybreak. All right, we need a thank you. Another major story we're watching in Washington this morning, a gun safety bill could soon pass the Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer hopes for approval by the end of the week.
