We do not have a handle on that. And then he went and did it. And then Valerie Bertinelli of all people Who is a delight, and I just say go ahead. I like her a lot. I follow, I feel bad when she cries because she's coming. I don't like, I don't like this year upset. I don't even know the lady, but I follow her on Instagram and everything else. And she got the idea. They're just overtake his name and then like a hundred other people did it. It's been, I don't even understand why do you want it? Twitter doesn't even make any money. Right, right. It's a $44 billion toy. Didn't he say comedy is back and free speech is back. And then he suspended Kathy Griffin impersonating him, right? Right. And but I don't think Valerie got to spend it. It's just the edicts of a king that make those sense. It's just random. I'm just saying, I haven't been charged $8 to my knowledge. Nobody's taking my check mark. I never got one. So now it's cool to not have a check mark. Yes, I don't know. Yes, and the reason he said Twitter will only have room for extremely hardcore employees who put in long hours at high intensity. He said, those who wish to work normal hours of regular intensity can leave within three months. Sounds like he's starting a radio station. Wow. Yeah, right? Well, it is telling him they have to physically go back. Yeah. I'm like, good luck telling the zoomers that. 'cause they're gonna go, yeah, no. And they'll just go get another job. They're not gonna report like, I think the Tesla people, maybe you have to because those are like engineers and stuff. It's not so easy to jump ship. Right. But for the, you know, the youngsters at work there. They'll just go to Google or somewhere else that will let them work from home with their dog and their pajamas. Yeah. I had to, you know, I had to review actually. I had to, what he's been able to assist in three weeks since three weeks. He presided over mass layoffs that have spurred class action lawsuits. He undermined trust in the platform by promoting a conspiracy theory within days of assuming leadership. The company's security protocols have fallen into disarray. His improvised in real-time system of verifying profiles to crack down on fake accounts has spread a wave of impersonations seeking confusion over everything from the price of insulin to whether George W. Bush misses killing Iraqis. And that's in just under three weeks. I mean, even though you're right, even Donald Trump is not blown up a business that quickly, has he? I mean, Trump steaks lasted longer. Trump water. Yeah. Oh, maybe. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, I love that. Which pharmaceutical company they impersonated? And they just said, insulin. Insulin's free, everyone. And it actually affected the stock. And then the Eli, the Eli Lilly people were like, hey, hey, hey, not us. Not us. It's gone. It's kind of fun to sit on the sideline and just watch it. Do whatever it's going to do because I don't even think my normal friends that aren't in entertainment or whatever. Plus, speaking of meta, large scale layoffs are hitting Silicon Valley. They've done this across the whole economy, meaning we keep talking about these technology companies as if they are some kind of special class. And the rest of the stories that got us squawking, like Twitter. Got a couple of past tweets that I might blame on. And impersonator. It wasn't me. The battle brewing against blue checkmark fakery. I think the Twitter creates an environment where people don't have self control. I know I don't. But you don't have self control in the real world either. It's Monday, November 7th, 2022, squawk pod begins right now. Stan Becky bye in three, two, one, Cuba, please. Good morning, everybody. Welcome to squawk box here on CNBC. We're live from the NASDAQ market site in Times Square. I'm Becky quick, along with Joe kernan and Andrew Ross Sorkin. My lead story today is that Facebook meta has 87,000 employees. Huge. Think of I don't know which college team has a stadium like that. Maybe Ohio State the Ohio State university. What is that 80? Think of that full. What do those people do? It's just being a metaverse. And I don't think it's 18 years. Has it ever had a down year in employment? Or has it just been they added what? Well, let's read this. Facebook parent meta could begin large scale layoffs as soon. As Wednesday, The Wall Street Journal is reporting this, expected to affect many thousands of employees, company officials have told employees to cancel non-essential travel beginning this week, a spokesperson declined to comment, referred CNBC to comments made last week on the earnings call by Mark Zuckerberg. He said some teams will grow meaningfully, but most other teams will stay flat or sink over the next year. Facebook had added more than 27,000 employees in 2020 and 2021. I'll call it to respond to increased demand during the pandemic and added an additional 15,000 in the first 9 months of this year. While adding all those employees of stocks down 70%. But just to put this in context for you, if you look at a Microsoft, has about a 160 3000 employees similar for alphabet. Now those I think are obviously bigger businesses, but by the way, market cap wise, just a year ago, not bigger businesses. And when you start to look through the revenue and everything else, you might not you might have you might have thought they were all comparable companies they were running. I'm not suggesting that they had the right number of employees. I'm just suggesting that maybe all of these companies are bloated, but they've got a lot, they've got a lot of people. That was part of the advantage though, is not having the cost structure being able to do this without the same cost structure as some of the other companies. You did compare traded up before. Yeah. If you did compare it to similar market caps, and now met us down 70%, then I mean, hopefully that's not what we're talking about in terms of rightsizing your employees to your market cap. You wouldn't want to employ truth is we've discovered and I don't know if we discovered it or not with Twitter, we'll find out whether they did it right. But Twitter it appears had too many employees, by the way, to tell anybody who works at one of these companies that there's too many employees. But it looks like there may have been Jack Dorsey apologizing, frankly, for what he said was over hiring at one point. It appears that these guys may have over hired. It's possible they over hired at Alphabet. It's possible they will provide a Microsoft. It's possible they've over hired all these places. Well, the question is whether they've done this across the whole economy, meaning we keep talking about these technology companies as if they are some kind of special class. I actually think that there's a possibility when it comes to the larger economy. We keep talking about what's going to happen in employment in this country. I think there's a recognition that you may be able to get away with less people. And then what happens? We'll see if that. And they could say that while we just things were going gangbusters and we just thought we'd need them and we never knew this day would come, but like you said, they over hired probably because always coming. They hired more than 40,000 people since the pandemic. This day is always. Look at 2020, 2021, and this year. They have hired meta more than 40,000 people since the pandemic started. Yes, it was ramping up in a very, very big way. It was based on these market caps, the kind of expanded. If you grew based on your market cap thinking that that was going to go to the store. You know how hard it is to diet. If you don't get fat in the first, isn't it a much better idea to always be thinking about things instead of that crazy one down if you just, but here's the thing, gorge, and then you gotta diet and I agree on the see you. If you are an example, you have never been fat. The physical dieting fund I totally understand. The other side of it though is that all of these companies are crazy growth companies. Look at a stripe. Stripe is reducing their workforce by 15%. It clearly over hired. Yeah. But when you're in a growth mode, the venture capitalist, the investors are saying grow, grow, grow, grow, grow. That's the most important thing you could possibly do. So what do you do? You hire people, you grow? I don't know, but that's no, I know. How this works. To the fat desk. What was that? Do you remember? And they don't reward you. They might want to do if you say, you know what? I'm going to have positive EBITDA, and I'm actually going to be this little conservative company, and maybe we're going to grow a little bit slower, but we're going to be stronger. That's not the mentality for better or worse. Elon Musk threatened permanent bands yesterday for people who impersonate others on Twitter without clearly labeling their account as parity that comes after several celebrity users change their accounts to mimic Musk. The account of one comedian who impersonated Musk over the weekend, Kathy Griffin, was suspended on Sunday. She had changed her display name to Elon Musk and her profile picture to look like his, and then she tweeted, after much spirited discussion with the females in my life, I've decided that voting blue for their choice is only right. Actress Valerie Bertinelli also changed her display name to Elon Musk and then posted tweets urging her followers to vote for democratic candidates, and that was just the beginning of it. I saw lots of people saying, all kinds of crazy things, changing their picture to look like kids. Oh my God, I saw one, and I actually thought was him, and it said, joined for the self promotion, staying for the anti semitism. And I literally, I had a double take. And it had a blue check mark. I had a boot check mark and it said Elon Musk on it. And I thought, is that I originally, when I saw this, I thought that he was telling a joke or in his own. This is the problem. This is a clever example showing the problems if being able to just buy your check mark for $8. Hopefully they will layer it with a verification process to make sure that this is not easily. Well, you saw him on Friday and I thought his whole point was that he was going to be verifying people so he could he could actually acknowledge who everybody was. There wasn't going to be people. To drown out the ball. You're drowning at the box, but also, you know, you wouldn't be anonymous. I thought there was a whole idea that you wouldn't be anonymous. Here, you effectively, not only could be anonymous, you could be somebody else. Hopefully they policed this because that is a problem. If you have people able to impersonate very quickly for 8 bucks, anybody they want. I mean, it's not the bots that are going to take advantage of that because this point was bots are created for a penny and then they flood, they were able to influence or advertise or do whatever they want with that. Hopefully it's not a case where anybody can walk in and say, for 8 bucks, I want to pretend I'm anybody I want and get

My mascara was a mess the whole time, but just the stories about not just her as a comedian, but as a human. And a lot of people, you know, not referring specifically to the midterms, what we're just saying, we need that more than ever. I mean, they called her love goddess for a reason 'cause she really spread a lot of love and inclusivity and just the whole it could happen. That's my midterm. Blue wave, it could happen. Judy always says it could happen. What could happen? I'm going with positive. I got my biggest laugh on my Elon Musk stroke. Who knew it would be so current? Yes, Scotland Twitter says Elon Musk said permanent bands shouldn't happen free speech is guaranteed and comedy is now allowed on Twitter until Kathy Griffin a comedian used her free speech to tease him and that he permanently banned her. So it was everybody was impersonating Elon Musk. I was happy was among many. Valerie Bertinelli was the first one to it. Yes. Yes. But I apparently you can't ban America's sweetheart. So we'll see what happens. But because you were saying some of the bands weren't permanent. Right. He's just, but he's like, he just has temper tantrums. And who knows he's just gonna do what he's gonna do? At that moment. Yeah. And you can't run a company like that. Right. So how many, I don't know, advertisers, employees, is everybody gone? Now he's threatening advertisers who loved, which is a good way to get them back back in this morning. He's realizing that he probably shouldn't have fired so many people, so he's actually trying to get some of the workers back. Which is not how you run a company

Days after Twitter laid off about half the company's workforce, it seems the social media giant is experiencing a bit of sellers remorse and is asking some back. Bloomberg is reporting dozens of let go employees are now being contacted and asked to return to work either because they were laid off by mistake or because management realized after the fact that their work and experience was integral to some of the new things Twitter's new boss Elon Musk envisions. Since the mass layoffs, the remaining employees have been reportedly pushed to move quickly in getting new features up and running with some posting that they've been sleeping at the office to meet deadlines. For those Twitter workers who are not being called back in, the city of San Francisco has a message. We're hiring. Here's case CBS Mike dewalt. The mid market neighborhood around Twitter headquarters is still reeling from the pandemic and remote work. We had a market down in the Twitter building, my favorite coffee shop, red bay coffee, was the place that I would stop into every morning before city hall. Everybody was struggling as the big businesses weren't coming back. That's supervisor Matt Dorsey, he represents the neighborhood. He says on top of the highly publicized Twitter cuts, Zendesk also announced more than two dozen job cuts in the same neighborhood. But he says the state has historically low unemployment and the city is looking to create a soft landing for those workers. Nobody wants to be in that situation. And when I talk about the low unemployment rate, I know that that can be sort of cold comfort when the day that you're finding out that you're getting laid off. But Dorsey says there may also be good news on the way. If there is a silver lining to it for the neighborhood, it's that Elon Musk also said that the remaining employees are expected to come back to work. San Francisco is also offering an array of job training programs. In San Francisco, Mike dewald. The social media platforms new owner issued the warning yesterday after some celebrities changed their Twitter display names, not their account names to Elon Musk in reaction to the billionaires decision to offer verified accounts to anybody for $8 a month. Comedian Kathy Griffin had her account suspended for switching her display name to Elon Musk. Actress Valerie Bertinelli did the same before switching it back to her real name, but first she posted a series of tweets in support of democratic candidates. Governor Gavin Newsom is speaking out about his plan to block homelessness funding to cities up and down the state. Jennifer Hodges says the governor wants those cities to get their act together. The governor says it was a movie was compelled to make because the numbers just aren't adding up. 2% reduction in homelessness for $15 billion. It's not acceptable. We lack ambition. Newton withheld a $1 billion in state homelessness funding from cities and counties until better plans are submitted. He says the state up to now has done quite a bit. Unprecedented supports even did something on mental health that everyone thought was impossible, care court, give them all the tools, what we want is ambition on action on plans. When people clean up the streets, deal with encampments. He says now his office will be working directly with local leaders to improve their plans. We're going to provide more than we've ever provided. We want to see more. And I think the taxpayers deserve that. You deserve that. We all deserve it. The homeless deserve that. The money withheld includes $47 million that was promised to San Francisco, Jennifer Hodges, case CBS. In an effort to make it easier for residents to cast their ballots three Sonoma county public transportation agencies are teaming up to give free transit rides, county wide on election day. Santa Rosa city bus Petaluma transit and Sonoma county transit will allow all passengers to ride any fixed route for free all day on Tuesday. This is a Bloomberg money minute after laying off around 3700 workers Friday, Twitter is calling some of those employees back. The company under new owner Elon Musk decided it needed at least some of those workers to make the changes Musk wants to make thousands of workers at Facebook's parent are expected to start hearing their fates this week as meta platforms begins layoffs. Hey moving along Valerie bertarelli, is explaining why she gave up on quote those damn scales. The Valerie said she was tired. A feeling like she was the most famous dieter in America. So after losing her first husband Eddie Van Halen to cancer in October, the 61 year old realized that she needed to focus on the stuff that really matters. She said the following quotes, the goal is to live in the moment and not according to the scale. There is no magic number that will make me feel good about myself never. She went on to say I'm done, judging myself. I want to be kinder and more accepting. I have a lot of decades of thinking I have to look a certain way for people to accept me for being me. She went on to say that she remembers as a child seeing her father treat her mother badly whenever she would gain any weight. This is heartbroken. She said I learned at a really young age that when you gained weight, you were not lovable. Yeah. That's really something. You know, so many times parents, they may not mean to. But the adults in our lives, they can do some serious psychological damage to us as children because, you know, we look to them to be our guides. And if they tell us we're not good enough because we've gained weight that does not set a good psychological profile for you as a child. So absolutely. I love Valerie, though. She's so sweet. She's so sweet. I know her a little bit. She's really, really kind. And I think she's right to become the most famous dieter in America, I can't imagine. Now she admits to she's part of the problem here because she signed up to do the Jenny Grammy on the weight watchers. I'm not sure which one. But she did sign up as their spokesperson. So she said, yes, part of this is my problem. I just don't want to do it anymore. When I lost a lot of weight, I never looked at the scale once, Cory. I didn't. I just went for a walk each day, doing the pandemic, and the way came off. And I only knew it because my clothes fit me better or I had to buy a smaller sized pan, but I think the scale is a really dangerous thing. It is. I'm not even sure what we have one in our apartment. Do you check your weight a lot you know, I'm not fanatical about it, but I do sort of do it for maintenance, just to know where I am, but it's not like a daily thing, but I know I'm in a process now of slimming down and getting my health together. And my doctor says, do not go by the scale, go buy how your clothes feel, how you look, and that's the best way. Absolutely. Don't go by that scale. I have a general sense like you. I have a general sense of my weight, but I don't look at it every day, but I think I'm the same with social media. I don't know how many followers I have to the nearest ten. Some people do. I have friends who know exactly how many followers they have, and if they lose one, they're really upset. I have a general sense, but that detail is something I don't think you should become obsessive. God bless you Valerie and her new book is coming out soon too. We have to pick that up. What's going on with Sex and the City what's happening with and just like that? And just like that, Chris north has been cut from and just like that, the finale will not feature the actor after, of course, these sexual assault allegations have permeated the airwaves over the past few weeks. Now, Chris Noth has been removed from the upcoming finale of HBO Max's and just like that. He was supposed to be in the finale. They were going to do a fantasy sequence where Sarah Jessica Parker's carry reunites with big while visiting Paris's pont dessau bridge to scattering his ashes. There's like 5 accusations. Denying them after the first two, he just shut up. But I think this statement is a little bit disingenuous too, saying that the footage wasn't significant enough isn't saying that we cut him out because going on. And so like the treading really carefully here, maybe unnecessarily so because it seems to me they don't want to upset anybody now. I should point out as well. We got a complaint that when the first episode aired. We waited a good week or so, and then we did reveal what happened. I think we gave a spoiler alert, but it's such big news. It was all over the Internet. It was all over social media. It was in the newspaper, so I felt safe doing it. But now I'm really conscious about not spoiling stuff. How long do you think you should wait, Corey? Please, one of my friends told me of for telling them the end of the Titan. Oh, yes. I know you go in there. You know how this ends, right? Well, you know, there's another dynamic too. So we're going to do it in a naughty but nice way so don't worry. You don't have to run away or turn the sound down. We will be will be okay about this, but it's a little bit racy. So Scott Disick, I love him. He does make me laugh he's so naughty. Says Scott seemingly asks Kim Kardashian about Pete Davidson's big penis I said that. And I don't know for me though, I just don't think there's something about him. Every time I see him, he just does not look like he looks so disheveled and like he hasn't taken a shower. I don't know. I can't see the sexy. A couple of days ago I was talking to Mark lupo about this on the show for a while, Pete and Ariana lived in the same building as me. They lived here. In Chelsea, and I remember going to the bank. It was a Chase Bank in my building. And I remember like, oh, standing behind this scruffy devil. There was sort of cute in a way that wouldn't normally interest me. And I think it was his confidence, and so this guy was in front of me, he was taken a long time. I didn't know it was Pete Davidson. I didn't. And but he was sort of had this energy about him. There's something about Pete maybe Scott Disick is telling us exactly what that something is clearly. He says it's unknown when the ceremony will take place, but white did die as we all know on December 31st, at the age of 99 of natural causes at her home in Brentwood, California, and it was just a few weeks shy of her 100th birthday on January 17th. I'm a January baby two. So I'm gonna feel like I'm connected now to miss white and another way. But in a statement, which just has said in a statement that, even though Betty was about to be 100, he says, I thought she would live forever. I will miss her terribly and so will the animal world who she loved so much and I don't think Betty ever feared passing because she always wanted to be with her most beloved husband, Alan, and she believed she would see Alan again and you know rob the stories last week, right, of apparently her last word when she was right before she died. She looked up, and she said, Alan. Oh, it's so beautiful. Well, let me assure you her manager. Betty will live forever. She might not be here, but she will live on forever and ever and ever. "I wrote the forward answer, you've got to get to know your own body. And so for people like you and me, it's possible. Year after year, week after week without looking at ourselves, are you one of those people who, when a friend takes a picture, you look at it and you don't recognize yourself? Are you that person that always has to get permission before somebody can post to snap they take a drink or dinner? If you're that person you don't know your body you've got to get to learn your body. I think in our mind, we have a different perception about what we look like if we don't know ourselves. It's really important to get to know yourself because that's the only way you can get to love yourself. I used to hate my big nose. When I was little, people made fun of my nose at school, it's so big. However, I forced myself and I did have to force myself to grow to love it because there's nothing I can do about it. And now I actually think my big nose is one of my best features. This is what Valerie is talking about. This is where it gets a little bit cynical. Valerie has a self help book coming out. In just a few weeks, so critics are saying this whole video was a was a planner was a PR stunt to get us talking about body image, so now she can sell us a book, or it shady, isn't it? I know this video broke my heart. And then somebody pointed out a reporter a friend of mine pointed out, she's got a book coming out in two weeks. In fact, in the video, she even reads a couple of paragraphs from the book. Is this naughty? Or is it all okay? Because at the end of the day, she is dealing with something we all deal with. It's not the first time she's done this. That's July. She shared a video explaining how hurtful it was to see people commenting that she needed to lose weight. At the time she joked, you know, I don't have a scale and I don't have mirrors, she said sarcastically. So I really needed your help to point out that I need to lose weight. Don't tell people that. We can see we have mirrors, we have scales, and she said you're not being helpful when you say that, because when you see somebody who has put on some weight, her first thought is, that person is obviously going through something. If you have a friend who dramatically puts on weight or even loses weight, there's probably something going on. So instead of pointing out the obvious, I approach the situation fuller of empathy at something we can all do. Hey, Queen Elizabeth. Left Harry and Meghan out of her Christmas address. Authentically and i think by audiences being able to see that and experience it on this beautiful journey and the storytelling in this film. My hope is that we will open a lot of people's eyes and create a lot more understanding for people who just don't know any better opening their eyes and hopefully their hearts as well Thank you for doing this film because this telling these stories is so important.
