"All of the franks had been placed back in their proper universes. Thanks to the dedicated. Work of the night failed department of sanitation or they might not be in the correct universe for them but at least they're no longer in our universe which is the important thing. These francs have scattered back through every possible plane of existence. Living different lives making different choices. A nearly infinite variation on the theme of frank chen one frank bought a subway franchise then lost it during one of the many once in a lifetime. Financial collapses in his lifetime. He moved in with his brother took to painting late at night. He only ever sold one painting at a local art fair where he had on a whim rented a table. The woman who bought the painting loved it very much and passed it onto her son. Who put it away in a closet and forgot about it. One frank was the president of the united states. There's basically a universe where each of us is the president. So that's not that surprising. Frank is an okay president. These pretty good at speeches and everyone likes the presidential parakeets but his policy platform of war on trees complete deforestation. now is a little more controversial. One frank was the composer for movies. Although he never composed for anything anyone would have heard of he mostly scored. Tv movies hallmark staff or reality show specials about cute cats. He didn't mind. He was not interested in artistic respect. Mostly he'd liked being able to play his instruments and get paid for it. One frank was a park ranger who gave tours for children showing them the paw tracks of local animals and teaching them what to do if they ever got lost in the woods. You should cry. He would say sometimes it's good to cry and you'll feel like you want to when you feel like you want to cry. You should do it. He had other advice of course but he did want it. Clear to them that they could always cry. One frank ran away from home as a teenager. Move to new york changed his name. Life was hard for a long time. Then it got a little easier. It was never completely okay that he had to run away that he had to escape but he found a life for himself and that was enough for him. A baker a long-term patient at a care facility a grad student in design and architecture a mayor of a mid sized city a father of three of one of zero dead at twelve at twenty at thirty seven at fifty four at eighty never died and never will all of these. Franks spiraling out around us. Every possible frank in every possible world and not a single one of them is our frank chen. The one person that all of this fuss has been about and it was the only one fully absent from our story. Judge chaplain is very displeased. Enough shenanigans the judge said you have one and a half months before november. I if you can't do this by then. The chen family gets to own the town. Fair is fair. the chen's themselves have not indicated what they would do with the town if they owned it. Although don chen has suggested just donating it for the tax write off. Well i don't know how i feel about our town being taken away from us but as the judge said i suppose fair is fair. Stay tuned next for a deep low boom from somewhere far beyond the horizon. It's beautifully designed by rob wilson like it's cool for fans of our show but also it's just a really gorgeous umbrella go look at it at least just go check it out. Also we have some brand new temporary tattoos. All tattoos are temporary tattoos but these slightly more so and finally we added a vague yet. Menacing government agency jacket. It's like that classic navy federal jacket with bold yellow lettering that will boldly let people know that you're on a covert operation so go check all of these things out. I think you'll love them. And also while you're there if you see something else you like. I'd say just get it because in order to make room for new things we constantly have to remove old things. Nothing and i mean nothing in this. Life is permanent including podcast march. So that's welcome tonight. Ville dot com. I rewind the film but the dvr cut off before the final seaports. So i couldn't show him and he said seasonal. I know it's your favorite movie but it's also very old. Maybe it doesn't hold up like you wanted to. Maybe said but i know what i saw. His expression shifted from nobel to empathetic skeptic. I think that's my dad. I said which one the one under the tree or the one with a shovel. Carlos said both. I said. I've never heard you mentioned your dad before. He said either have i. I said then we both repeat it back and forth three times before folding the blanket up policing it back on the top of the couch. Starting the dishwasher checking in on esteban. Who was still fast asleep and heading to bed ourselves later in my dreams i saw the man from the film and i was scared with him. Long enough that the fears subsided. And i asked him if he was my father and he began to speak with. The sound was slow to my years. And before i could hear what he said he was gone and so were his words replaced by the bright morning sun and the gentle piano tune of my alarm. And here your. I am wondering how many ghosts there are in the world must be billions feels arrogant to assume that just because i see one has to be related to the fbi will meet him again. "As you may remember last fall a judgment was handed down against the sheriff secret police and the city of night vale on behalf of the family of frank chen frank was murdered by an unknown perpetrator almost ten years ago and the judge ruled that night ville must produce a living frank chen exactly as he was the day he died within one year or ownership of the town of knight vale will be handed in full to the chin family a few months ago the sheriff secret police claimed to have successfully returned frank chen but it turned out that they had only cloned him several times this was ruled not to count and so the frank clones were released into the world to live their lives as they saw fit meanwhile the deadline still hung over the town government and the sheriff but today sheriff sam made a surprise announcement we did it for real this time said the sheriff we have frank chedda exactly as he was the day he died. So that's taken care of no biggie. We did a great job and we should feel great about it. No sign of frank at the press conference so we will keep you updated as we know more but first a word from our sponsors. It's the summer sales event in the woods. That's right everything must go trees. Squirrels caves boss. We must be crazy to be setting prices this low and elm for fifteen hundred dollars top soil for eight monthly payments of nine ninety nine. Who allowed us to sell it. This discount lou allowed us to sell it all. What right do we have to this land. What right do we have to commodified this world. We share is imaginary prophet and excuse for real suffering. We say who cares. Grab a pine cone for ten cents. Take a bear for five hundred dollars. The prices are arbitrary because currency is arbitrary but we value it more than fragile life porcupines or buy one get one free by three logs and iraq for absolutely nothing. These deals can't be beat. That deer costs sixteen dollars. That's a sixteen dollar deer. That other deer costs eighteen dollars. The to dear look basically identical but there is a difference and that difference is two dollars the summer sales event in the woods. Everything must go and it will sooner than we think. This has been a word from our sponsors. All parties gathered at the courthouse under the watchful eye of judge chaplain. Sheriff sam wheeled forward adali with a canvas draped shape on top. That wriggled and made grunting. Sounds the chen. Family sat looking suspiciously at sam. Dongcheng tapped his foot impatiently. Mei-chen poked her father. Norman chen and whispered something to which the older chin shook his head and rolled his eyes little. Lyle chen ran in circles. Living out some story only he was aware of sheriff. Sam removed canvas with a flourish and there. In fact was frank chen. His mouth had been covered to prevent him from ruining the surprise once he was again able to talk. He shouted what in the world is going on. Who are all you people. He looked over at the chen family and his face creased in panic and concern dawn. Is that you. why do you look like that. You're you're so old. Was i in a coma. Judge rachelle chaplain her long face with dark serious lines about the is said sternly to sheriff. Sam explain yourself. Judge rochelle chaplain is well liked because in her. Eight years of service as our county's only judge. She is always tough but fair. Sheriff sam explained that it was all quite simple working with staff from the museum of forbidden technology. They had put together a time machine using the time machine. They had gone back. Nine years and removed frank chin from his place and time mere moments before his death and so they fulfilled the judicial order. Exactly as stated judge nathaniel. Keaton his to rubik face with a ghost of a mustache said offhandedly to frank chen and is this. You know True or whatever judge. Keaton is disliked because in eight years of service as our county's only judge he is always equivocating and taking sides. I guess said frank. Chen was was about to be murdered. That's super scary so I'm glad to be here. Is that little. May he said he were five. When i last saw you do you remember. Your uncle despite herself may ran forward in hugged frank and both began to cry. It's him may said i know it. It's not a trick it's him. it's him well. This is incredible. I can't wait to talk this over with my boyfriend. Carlos he's a scientist you know so. He probably knows all about time travel and any complications. It can cause sheriff. Pamela wind chill nodded a job. Well done i'd say she did say then. She opened a trap door in the courthouse floor and disappeared through it more on this. If there is more seems like the story might be finished. Let's have a look at the dues. Big changes afoot at the moonlight all night diner. The new owner will be. Oh hey steve carlsberg. Aw i love steve always have just a just a great guy he will be running the place along with his wife. Diane creighton and his stepson. Josh i've always loved the moonlight steve said and now i am excited to run it as a family business with my new family. Don't worry all your favorites including the famous invisible. Pancakes will still be on the menu. And steve continued. You might see some new items like my very own scones. Oh my god. Steve makes the best scones. Oh this is great news josh. Who is a shape shifter and took the form of a classic diner jukebox to celebrate the day indicated that he is thrilled to be working with his new stepdad. Yeah he said it's cool or whatever i mean. Yeah that's fine or whatever. Then he put on what he described as this super old song that he's not sure anyone has heard of but he's gotten into it because he loves the classics and call me. Maybe is indeed one of the best golden oldies. You might see advertisements for the new ownership of the moonlight all over town. Steve said he even bought billboards on the purple crystal spire out in the sand wastes. I cannot wait to take my boyfriend out to have invisible. "Ahead megan the has sent me a statement in her own words about what happened to her and where she has been. It all started at the desert party. It was around midnight. When i left the dance floor so i could find a place to pee in the desert. I know if you've ever been in a body with that anatomy but the ability to outside easily is a major perk. I went past a cactus grove and decided to stand over the side of the drainage ditch. It's actually an arroyo which is a type of steep gully created by intermittent flooding. I learned that in my advanced anatomy class. Because there are several arroyo's in the human body while i was out there. I felt horrible pain in my left side. And i knew i was having a massive heart attack. I learned about the signs and symptoms of a heart attack in my intro to geology class. I lost control of my body and fell down into the arroyo breaking several bones. My body was already dead at that point so it didn't really hurt but i was stuck. He started drumming my fingers in the dirt. My friends would here. But michelle's di jiang was too loud pretty soon after that thunderstorm happened within minutes a flash flood washed through the arroyo and pushed my body miles away. I found myself stranded in the middle of nowhere anchored to my body. Just waiting and hoping for rescue the next day i woke too loud screeching sounds the nearby cliffs. Were full of nests. I watched as large pieces of me. Were packed away and carried through the sky. Vultures and kestrels. It's baby raptor season and there are many shrieking mouths to feed. I managed to bury myself. Mostly in the sand to avoid getting pecked to death and waited until a vulture finally severed. My wrist pad was painful. I was bleeding a lot then. But i scampered up the side of the arroyo as fast as i could. My movement attracted attention. And i was soon being chased by a large buzzard saw hole in the ground just big enough to fit inside of an hit. That was where. I met kind. Tarantula named niro i had taken cover in one of the entrances to his family's borough niro lead me through a network of tunnels deep underground. I stayed with his family for several days and they gave me excellent medical care. Their society is very communal. And everyone i met made me feel super welcome. Applying RL to Real-World Robotics with Abhishek Gupta

"Gupta aspect is a phd student at uc berkeley. Where he works with folks. Like peter l. and sergei levin who've had on the show before abstract. Welcome to the terminal podcasts. Thanks forward to digging in and learning more about your work and your background. What got you interested in. Studying our al and robotics. Yes so so. I think my first experience with robotics was actually This first lego league that bump additions where we would like make these lego robots than they would like do these challenges and when we first did it we made the robots just by heart goading all the different primitives and programs to do everything and that works to some extent but i think when i came to berkeley it was really exciting to see that people had more sophisticated techniques to control. Robots was also the only thing that had ever done before then in terms of project experience and so i reached out to a number of professors I called the projects cool and beater specifically had a lot of research at that time on folding laundry and flying helicopters and i was like wow this is this is really amazing so at least to him as a freshman and and then he you know. He hired me as an assistant in his lab to kind of help out with some software engineering projects in some research projects. And kinda got started on research from there and so then like the first set of experiences that i had there. Were kind of like helping grad students and post docs on their research projects which were largely related to folding laundry in dying noughts and folding thousand things that peter was excited about at the dime and from there i think click grad school my research and interest under a lot more towards enforcement learning and learning based ideas. Oh cool so within that of of our and our alpha robotics. And i guess maybe that's broad from a tomato perspectives. Since we've had a bunch of conversations on your where do you focus like what are what are your research interest within those fields. Yeah so i guess. Since i am a person who was really excited about robotics and i wanna get robots to work because i think they have a lot of impact and i see. Rls a great dual to enable robotics more so than exploring rl for the sake of water. And so what i specifically think about a lot is like what are the things that prevent us from applying reinforcement learning robotics problems in the real word. So for instance if we want a robot the like operating kitchen and being up your kitchen or make a meal what is it. That's preventing the algorithms at work on. I'll go out for star. Whatever for being applied to these types of systems. And so i specifically think about like. There's a mismatch assumptions between what these algorithms typically assume and what's actually available in the real world. It's like i think about. How do we bridge these mismatched assumptions. So specifically what i mean by that is for instance in a game or in a in a video game or a board game. You'd assume that the score is provided so that award function it's daily easily available but in the vale where there's no score. Which tells you what you're doing. That are for instance in video game. You can collect millions of samples but in a physical robot if you do that with random expiration. You're gone either. Break yourself for the environment and then also just like. There's a lot of assumptions that we make where we can hide are gertie laundry in simulation. So we can like reset the wherever we want or we can like magically set the state of the world in some ways and a lot of our algorithms are critically reliant on these assumptions but in the real world. You just can't do that and so kind of been thinking about. How do we bitch mismatched assumptions. In that way and the problems. That are most interesting to the one that you mentioned earlier that you can cut your teeth on with peter in saturday like folding laundry and not tying and that kind of thing or you have some other When you think about your work. Do you have some set of canonical problems. That come to mind. Yeah that's a great question. So i think it'd be great if we could fold our laundry at byron ought to do the things that we used to do but i don't think we're quite there yet so i think we're still getting objects to be pushed at on and picked out and more basic skills before we can get to the more complex ones that so there's like more averages paradox which would which indicates that like learning low level skills can often be harder than learning the higher level ones and. I think we're kind of stuck in battery him but we're making a lot of progress. I think

Interview with a Psychic

"Welcome to kiss myths and mysteries. I your host kit chrome today's interviews with internationally known psychic and medium sharon bauer who is also the author of the book. Eternal love immortal. Today's podcast comes from the rogue valley metaphysical library. Welcome sharon and thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to thank you kid. I really appreciate this opportunity to share with you as well as your listeners. The parts of my book. That i think are really important to be revealed. That's great and i have to start off by saying i really enjoyed your book. And it's divided into eight sections and for the listener so they have a sense. This book is just uplifting at really fun to read. But it's easy torri because his she's sharon. You got a divided into eight parts. So i'm just gonna go through this briefly part one. I have so much to say. I hardly know where to begin. Part two releasing all beliefs part three truth always prevails are four if love was the only factor those in the afterlife would remain with us here or would remain here with us heart. Six our beloved pets which is really interesting parts. Seven hate part eight. If i i felt the presence of a pure that comes from debut in though so young and it's it's just a great book on many of the stories deal with the spirit that has a message for a loved one and you often refer to the ceases being on the other side of vail before really get into the book. I wonder if you would describe the process. What you go through or how the spirit comes to you and also if you could describe this veil that you mentioned i'm actually get. There are two veils. I call them the veil of forgetfulness. The first male is between the pre existence and our existence existence here on this earth. Playing the second vale is available between the earth and are moving forward into the paradise or heaven or to the next ram the veil is a thin membrane. And the reason why call it. Forgetfulness is because as we pass through we forget our previous existence and and the members there however when we pass through the second veil the veil that separates at the time of death are conscious soul christ consciousness. That of the experiences that we've had here does go with us to the other side. The consciousness of the brain being and the physical body that guys with the physical wadi show. We're taking with us those memories and those experiences with us. When repass the veil. I started experiencing this when i was a very young girl. My father was a logger and he was killed his catt turned over on magnon cala oregon and showed that was my first experience with death There's a feeling of abandonment. Masa that goes with this feeling and so questioning a wandering inquiries you know my irish five and my baby sister died. I was six when my second father passed. And so i kind of have grown up with this questioning as to wear. Bu you go you know so that was really important part of my life this unknown and wanting to know an and having the desire to shake out and find okay. That's i got something here. That is kind of the preface for part. Three truth always prevails. I'd like to read this because it talks a little bit. I guess of you where you're like. You just mentioned you're kind of coming from this. So this is this is As i mentioned the prophets part three. It's the importance of truth. Resides on both sides of the veil. Truth has a certain ring to it. Speaks to everyone. In fact most of us recognize truth in our gut. If you paused with what is being said and noticed a deep feeling residing within you will experience truth the feeling of peace or adult troublesome spoken statement will penetrate. You're very being. It brings a knowing of or awareness. There is a spirit in each of us helping us to unerringly determined truth from falsehood my truth. That would be you. Why truth. I have knowing i speak with those in the afterlife. I think that's a tremendous statement and one of the things that struck out to me about. This book is through so many of the of the stories about readings and meeting people and spirits is. There's about in this. Because i think for so many people they say i'll come on but reading the different stories. A lot of people were skeptics. And i wanted to ask you about that. What what is your experience meeting somebody. Who is i. Guess you would say on non believer. Actually i welcome that because most of the time that is orchestrated by a loved one on the other side that is wanting to make connection with this person. That doesn't believe and so when that happens in i'm there and that their loved ones shows up then i'm able to bring through the information that's pertinent to them. The message that needed to come through comes through for them and with they being able to experience what i have. Experience is confirmation invalidation. Which is why mediums do is to bring through the validation. The confirmation that life is eternal and only the individual having their personal experience with a loved one from the other side. Something that the medium would have no awareness of but could bring that through bearing witness to that family member that their loved one still continues to exist in the end the another rep and i know that a

In the Weirdest Ski Season Ever, Big Resorts are Booming

"About this time of year most years a lot of people start dreaming about their upcoming ski trips but this year is possibly the weirdest year ever for skiers and snowboarders last year marked a turning point in which two giant conglomerates took over the ski industry in two thousand eighteen. Colorado private equity firm called k. s. l. partners got together with another investor and launch the multibillion dollar altera mountain company altera snapped up big-name resorts including steamboat springs mammoth resorts in california and deer valley resorts l. Terrorism enormous rival vail resorts went on a buying spree to last year. Veil the biggest ski resort company in north america continued scouring the country for acquisitions the bottom line. These dueling mega corporations as the wall street journal. Call them bought. Most of north america's top snow resorts and started selling ski passes that work at dozens of locations in twenty nineteen veils. Epic pass was good. At sixty nine different global resorts alturas icon. Got you into forty-one resorts from colorado steamboat. Ski resort to switzerland zermatt. The numbers climbed even higher. During the two thousand twenty ski season their strategies aggressive acquisitions and virtual multi mountain season passes allowed the to dominate the industry. If you're a ski company mogul the financial future. Looked amazing notice. I use the past tense. There there's not an industry exact who saw cove at nineteen coming or how it would devastate the industry last march. More than ninety percent of america's resort shut their doors abruptly as a whole. The industry lost about two billion dollars. According to the national ski areas association veils fiscal twenty. Twenty revenues fell thirty percent. Altera is privately owned but likely to affect the same pain so you might assume that. The outlook is pretty dark this season. Well you might be wrong. At production time vale. Stock price was close to a record high. Almost two hundred eighty dollars a share. That seems head-spinning. On the one hand you have an industry that relies on traveling and gathering together in a year when both restricted but so far the outlook for vail tara is far from that of a year without snow. Sales avail season passes of already surged twenty percent this year reports the colorado sons jason blevins. Why with indoor activities. Few and far between outdoor recreation of all kinds has skyrocketed moreover to comply with regional cova capacity restrictions. Some resorts are restricting. Day lift tickets. They're giving first dibs to. You've got it. Season pass holders vail now. Terra designed multi mountain. Ski passes as a way to make sales all year long and take a little of the sting out of paying the lift ticket window but now a season pass has become almost essential for snow lovers. If you don't have one you might not ski at all and even if you do you'll have to reserve your trip ahead of time. Once you're there the experience will be very different. Not surprisingly you'll have to social distance in lift lines at some resorts. You won't be allowed on a lift or gondola with anyone. But the companions you came with most indoor dining in bars or closed you may have to reserve a parking space and the resorts would prefer that you steal a day off mid week and skip that weekend skiing. These safety precautions are designed to keep ski resorts open and keep skiers and snowboarders lining up with their boots keys and wallet. If cova cases start climbing near your favourite mountain though it could all change overnight in the meantime we have a few words of wisdom for you. The intrepid skier be patient. Yup.io: Build Influence and Earn Money for Rating Content

"So tell us near what is Yup? Yup A is a second layer social capital. That reward users based on the engagement in opinions that they give on. Jane and through this actually reflects and represents influence and social capital offer all participants for all data points all you are else across the web. So it's really a I. think a lot of people will understand what social capital is currently. I happy to jump into that. So essentially, the way it works is that Yup is tracking your activity across the web. You rate things when you like them when you follow certain users is tracking those actions in actually do them directly from our products for from the sites, the platforms that you love at every post, all that kind of stuff you're tracking in your scoring. Exactly and what other influential users engage in a similar way they like the same piece of content they support the same user they You know they think or rate a certain pieces of content or our are Asian in a certain way that you actually get rewarded in tokens and you actually build influence for yourself in a particular category, and so you know just to just to take out back a bit really Yup, is predicated on one important site, and it's that influence will be one of the fastest growing asset classes of the twenty s that market is highly inefficient so that you are influence. Online has become this ridiculously valuable thing from economic stamp in a social standpoint, but the actual market itself and and the way that functions is highly inefficient still, and we see this inefficiency in sort of two main ways that I think people understand. One is influence largely illiquid. So if you're a small time influence and let's say you have eight thousand followers, even you care about your and you wanna be able to monetize that but it's very easy for you to do show do. So that is even more the case for curator's rather than breeders, and this is an important aspect of what we do which. If. You're liking things. If you re tweeting things if you're the one who's rating things, there is close to knowing for you'd actually be able to monetize not. And we think that that's really corden problem here on the second that is largely missed priced. So you know from a market standpoint, the metrics step determine the value of influence on mine are enormously inaccurate. So actually looking trying to measure social value based on the amount of likes that something has received their followers or stream counts or views is proven to be incredibly inaccurate and. Misleading that most of US treat those as being much more true when valuable than they actually are, and that that is sort of leading to a lot of the problems that we see around insolence online. So. Fake News Mission Yeah E. IT almost makes me think of like the black box or the kind of the shrouded val behind like advertising analytics right? So if I'm an advertiser. I just have to trust essentially what the platform that I'm advertising on tells me what they, how many views I got how long the average view wasn't all that kind of stuff but it's like behind a walled garden of data and so is Yup, kind of coming at it saying like, Hey, we're going bring down the whole vale in everybody's GonNa see everything. Regarding the engagement of a certain piece of content or something like that might on the right track nothin'

Vail Resorts invests in massive Nebraska wind farm

"None of the thirty four ski resorts owned by Vail are in Nebraska but the company is investing in the states. Abundant wind-power. Vale has committed to buying three hundred, ten thousand megawatt hours of energy from the new plum creek wind farm in Wayne. County. That's enough to offset more than ninety percent of the electricity used at all avails. North. American resorts just give you an idea of scale to about thirty thousand homes worth power annually for twelve years. That's cates Wayne Wilson Fail Senior Director of Sustainability. She says, the power purchase agreement helped bring the wind farm online this summer. So for us, it's really important in our renewable strategy that we're bringing new renewables to the grid and the project takes Vail resorts close to the company's goal of zero emissions by twenty thirty, and we're really excited and proud of that, and we're also looking at the local level of how can we engage in solar and wind and other renewables on the ground where resorts are. She says for Ski. Company like Vale Protecting. The environment is a necessity. The great outdoors is our business and we feel like we've special obligation to protect it. So by investing in wind turbines in the Great Plains Vale is reducing the climate impact of its High Mountain Resorts.

'Behind The Kingdom's Veil' Offers Insights Into The Lives Of Ordinary Saudis

"Saudi Arabia opened its doors to foreign tourists. The move was part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salmon's grand plan. To transform the ultra conservative kingdom into a modern open state with a more modern open economy. How that is playing out is a complicated, often contradictory story. As we have reported And, of course, being a tourist anywhere right now is tough with the pandemic, shutting down most international travel, all of which makes a new book that offers insights into the lives of ordinary Saudis. In this moment, all the more welcome. It's called behind the Kingdom's Vale, its authors whose on a couple is a correspondent for Der Spiegel magazine, who lived and worked in the kingdom. She's on a couple welcome. Thank you very much happy to join. We're glad to have you with us. Your book tells the story of Saudi Arabia it's past its president. Through encounters that you had with all sorts of people. Sunni Shia men. Women rich, poorer, powerful, not so powerful. I want to start by talking about Nora because Nora was in many ways your entree into Saudi life. Who is she? That was really a stroke of luck to run into. Nor in almost the very beginning. When I moved there, she worked as the assistant off a businessman. Who are you Actually, she was the person who took me to all these places to weddings to food festivals to the desert to places where women only meet suddenly that was an accident, which was rare in which I enjoyed very much and we had so much fun, So actually, it was a wonderful person to accompany me Throughout this time it was living there. You nodded to a food festival. Tell mejust this sounds like such a normal outing heading out to a food festival with a girlfriend. What did it reveal to you about how life in Saudi He is changing. Actually, it was a complete exciting thing. It was the first time that something like this was happening in Saudi Arabia, which just a couple years ago was the kingdom of border just to go out with a friend on neat with other people, Men, possibly even and sit down somewhere. Have a chat with people you have never met before who do not belong to your family, for instance. That is something which was absolutely impossible. Impossible. Impossible is recently as what a decade ago five years ago. Actually, it's only like three years ago, I would say when I was living there every morning, there was another thing, which was absolutely impossible to imagine the day before music concerts. What? I knew somebody who was trying to learn an instrument. He had to drive to betrayal every week, 500 kilometers to get one lesson. And then when he came back, his family criticized hip to say what you wanted to do Music. I mean, people who do music. They also do other bad things. Like meeting women or drinking or other things, which are Haram Haram, meaning forbidden. It's so yes, on this person now is one of the hay started. A great career is a musician. Suddenly this became very normal, but before it was not I want to

Could. It could have even been. You know a useful rant. I'm not really sure but I immediately knew this is someone that I want to pay attention to this is someone that I wanNA follow. So. For me to get a chance to just dive into who you really are because of course, at this point I have had the chance to meet you in person and we have had. Interactions they're still so much. I don't know and I have a lot of questions. So I read somewhere that you started listening to. Night. Vale and Lime Town that that might have been your first introduction to podcast. Is that right? So that was my first introduction to fiction podcasts by I was one of those people where I was listening to podcasts in a more general sense before I pods were even a thing I was downloading them on my desktop computers and listening whenever I could back in those early days of I tunes but Lime Town and Night Vale were definitely my biggest introductions to fiction, which then launched me into writing. So when you're listening to the other podcast prior to that, what happened that was different when you listen to night villain lime town that led you to feel like Oh maybe I wanNA play a role in this. In Twenty twelve, twenty thirteen. There were a bunch of fiction podcast being made and because I guess I kind of raised myself on traditional nonfiction podcasting things like radio lab and grammar girl and writing excuses when fiction podcast starting to make stir I was unfortunately in the camp where I thought that they were going to be good that they would be kind of. Poorly, produced or poorly written or kind of tacky. So I just didn't latch onto them, which is so embarrassing to see now. When I listened to night neil well, that's fascinating to me because of course. so closely to the genre. Yeah. When I heard Night Vale, it was kind of more of the same kind of thought of it as the exception to the rule, and I think part of that is because I was so set on this idea that you know all fiction podcasts kind of sounded like basically like a prairie home companion in my head that's what I was comparing it to and I liked that night failed did something so different in. So weird I mean this was again like. Twelve thirteen twenty thirteen, and back then lgbt representation, which is something that I think a lot of people fiction space take a little bit for granted now, not that we couldn't still be better, but we really had so little of that in an accessible fiction format and the main relationship in that podcast is between two men and later would go on to have trans characters and it felt really revolutionary to me and growing up in Arizona and specifically being in Phoenix for most of my life I. Latched onto. The weird desert setting usually the desserts here are basically exactly as bizarre feel feel feels like a documentary sometimes. I thought of it. Yeah. As like the exception to the rule I liked it but I didn't think it would be into more efficient podcasts but when lime town came around and my friend introduced me to it. I mean, it sounded incredible and I was working in my college radio station. At the time I had tried my hand out a little bit of production. So I knew how much went into it and it just sounded so good. They loved the writing and I've always been one four character study is and that's basically what town is like there is the mystery to it, but it's mostly vignettes of these fascinating characters and he just fell in love and then from there I just kind of dove headfirst into all the fiction I could find, and now here I am. So, you were at college at the time right were you what were you studying? Did you have parallel paths going like I'm interested in radio and I'm working at the college radio station but I- majoring in something completely different. Something completely different. I. My Undergrad degree is in English education. I was very bent on being teacher. I just worked at the college radio station for fun basically, and then you Kinda fell in love with and the more I fell in love with audio the more I fell in love with working at the station. And then I did my semester of student teaching. I graduated I worked as a substitute teacher for two months. End then hated it never been You hate it why? I loved teaching proper is loved being with the students but honestly I think that I was. I got way too emotionally involved in all of my students and to to this day. I still think back on students during that semester student teaching and wonder if they're okay

Collaborating to Cure Dementia

"Many of us will have to deal with dementia at some point in our lives whether as a patient or caregiver this terrible range of conditions affects five to eight percent of the sixty and older population at any given time. According to the World Health Organization the Dementia Consortium of Private Charity Partnership that Charles River joined last year is one of the organizations leading promising research on dementia treatments in order to discuss this condition and the research to treat it. I am joined by Sarah Almond Associate Director of integrated biology. Welcome Sarah Hi. Can you explain the purpose and organization of the DEMENTIA CONSORTIUM DEMENTIA Is SETUP BOY A? K. or outside research she k. Is a charity that focuses on. Alzheimer's disease it brings together. Active research is Pharma partners. Sarah's including Chelsea River in order to bring forward novel treatments dementia including outlines disease outside reset she. Kabc this research is invited to come forward with ideas for novel targets in Europe. Degeneration Your Inflammation Way. Them work with them to put together. What packages the funded by the partners? Anti Kate to prosecute he's talk and hopefully lead to novel treatments for Dementia. What do you think of the way? They've set up their organization. I think this is a great way to stop the organization because it brings together such a broad range of experience From academic researchers may have spent years really understanding the biology of targets to pharmaceutical companies. That know how to bring targets three two treatments actually effective in the clinic and also is a CRI where we have a broad range of so biology and chemistry capability so we cannot provide the word packages also have extremely experienced. Research is catchy. Help develop the molecules to treat these young coupled with the charitable input of the Vale Uk. He Project managed but also do so much to bring forward research in this area. Yeah absolutely cut covering all the bases. So what is Charles Rivers role in this group? You mentioned a little bit and you go into a little more detail. Charleston is WANNA to Communist with capabilities and drug discovery expertise. We provide strategic input into plans to de risk these targets and how to generate tool molecule suitable testing the hypothesis. We went with Alzheimer's Research K. And the principal investigator to proposals together. That income dreams that executed by then the appeal and US working closely together. They may do the basics. Hogging island allergy and we bring medicinal chemistry or HD CAPABILITIES. That actually will enable us to find a joke against that tailgate. We meet with the foul partners to finalize plans. And then once funded. We actually execute the work. Okay awesome I understand that a couple of research projects from the consortium have already been green lit Can you explain those proposals? She'll you're correct to Russia in progress of the two targets. One is fine as the Scott appears to link to Tau Accumulation ear inflammation. We aren't sure whether we need to be selective over a closely related kind as the. Pi is looking at whether ACHSAF. You've reduced this target. That doesn't indeed impact Taufel are. They should be China in Vivo. Mostly of onto molecule and vacation and which is a specific type of dementia or Alzheimer's. Or is that just a general Assignments towel face but particularly Alzheimer's disease at the eventual Gulf one is to the impact of the tour the killer produce on time phosphorylation. In an in Vivo model than the second project is two gene mutation I l s from tempo dementia the courses of pathogenic Rene to be produced. And we're aiming to block the expo this RNA. By targeting his with the protein takes out the Chris into the cell. When this new mix and Rene is exploited toxic repeat protein produced which then up today so responses and Kohl's neurodegenerative disease so the talk if allegations. This is actually already fairly strong. So we'll focus on producing told molecule capable of testing the hypothesis drug ability in Viva. And this is quite interesting that uses Zebra Fish Assay which is as a Pi Out Annika's scrap. The compounds can reduce the interaction between the protein. And the mutant. Aren a over So vice projects Charles River going to rub in Asia screen and then performed medicinal chemistry. Touchy try and get the molecules to kind of test with the viable targets. So how exactly is the consortium supporting this work on on these two proposals? So the consortium consists of Pharma Partners K. And they weren't. She formed kind of equal partners within that and they provide funding the project so they've also provided their expertise in kind of defining the key risks that we need to address in our plans and also technically hurt entice for example as I was research to see progress against small Stein's out payroll Consult here as a whole. I understand our work on dementia has increased substantially over the last year or. So is this because of a higher demand for treatment or is it more promising research avenues. Or is it both. I think by This been advances in understanding of neurons. Lemay tion in particular so this is triggered research projects. But also there's a shift away from the amyloid focused approaches for outside disease due to a lack of clinical success but equally dementia is still highly prevalent in and loss of US. Know people that'd be personally affected by this August. Just it's very hard Eric Tree but not one which people are going to give them. What is the importance of collaboration for researching these neurological diseases? They understand that. Probably the REAL STRENGTH OF THE CONSORTIUM. I think just touches found that there are Kiama nays area The SIS for those lost focus hasn't been successful in the clinic so it's clear that novel therapeutic approaches and needed and this takes time so rarely. We need different people to work together. Different functions work together so farmer actually reduce what they do in house and choose to those complex in return. Viva studies take years to fully establish in Zeros and so when academic academia follow charities and see arose all have complementary skill sets the they they research can be three to benefit the patient in the minimum time possible. Is it also a matter of the fact that CNN diseases are so complicated? And there's so many different factors going into the Mike. No one can be an expert in enough of the different areas of research to really do absolves ex exactly not. Yeah you know. And and so just by the nature of scientific institution you may get more time to focus on specific disease mechanisms. That PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY. Just doesn't have the kind of time to dedicate starved to really building that level understanding but they may have a much broader range of complex models. That can actually help advance. This yet come has been unfortunately so we can you tell me about the psychiatry consortium which I guess is kind of an offshoot of the dementia consortium. Yeah it's it's basically has the same structures dimensions. Timonen is formed in consultation with a K. Who a kind of had a stake in his on. Psychiatry example schizophrenia or autism and this is obscene medicines discovery cats who are not for profit and are there the cats ponant which was set innovate UK to support innovation and use by UK business? So the psychiatry console is one of the indicates which is accelerating drug discovery and psychiatric

Trump asserts his power as 'total' to reopen country

"Of the World Health Organization says he thinks president trump is supportive of the agency despite the president's claim the administration's looking to withhold funding as it looks for fault in the timeline of the handling of the pandemic this comes as the agency warns now is the time for vigilance as countries look for exit strategies from lockdown measures as you know the United States is actually the largest contributor to W. H. H. O. O. and and I I have have met met president president trump trump a a number number of of times times before before starting starting from from twenty twenty seventeen seventeen and and recently recently where where we had a cool conversation two weeks ago and what I know is that he's supportive and I hope but the funding to W. H. O. will will continue and the relationship we have is is a very good and the we hope that this will continue but by no means does that mean that it's all over now is the time for vigilance now is the time to double down now is the time to be very very careful and that does not mean the country's cannot begin to create an exit strategy it doesn't mean that countries shouldn't be actively planning to do that but as the director general said there are them in in that sense there are there are things that need to be done you can't replace locked down with nothing you must replace locked down with a very deeply educated commission is empowered and engaged community we are going to have to change our behaviors for the foreseeable future residents from says along Vale is planned gradually reopen economy this week even as some states form their own coalitions to not plan that when asked about governors having the authority president trump said the following our specific other issues a stay at home the president not much because not many businesses he's the president of the United States the authority is total and that's what's gonna be the first governors now we have a couple of bands of excuse me just give me a call did you receive our you have a couple of bands of of the democratic governors but they will agree to it they will have the authority of the president of the United States having to do with the subject we're talking about is total Connecticut governor Ned Lamont pulling no punches in calling out the president's claim I heard that present going to throw verbal hand grenades and died two weeks ago we told your brother and myself I want a mandatory quarantine your actual policy area and we call them up and talk them down we got something a lot more reasonable doubt two weeks later once a mandatory opening up of everything I just think you like system run down these rabbit holes you're right the governor is going to make the determination of what's best for their state we care deeply about the health and safety of our citizens and we're gonna get our economy going in our program thoughtful way now he's got the bully pulpit but we're the ones that have to enforce everybody knows that the governor's where the rubber meets the road I think every governor knows what it takes to get it done just like you said when I'm on a mandatory quarantine York city we had to say Mr president there are a hundred twenty roads not to mention ferries railroads in and out there's no way to do that and he didn't do it how do you courtesy of CNN president trump's claim that he could force governor's hands comes after he left it to them to make decisions about stayed home restrictions and worked as a back up to the states responses
