Tom Cruise Shares What Pushed Him to 'Top Gun' Reboot

"Tom cruise is set to fly once again in the upcoming. Top gun maverick. The sequel to his hit from nineteen eighty six. When you think of the original topgun. Tom is clearly the first actor that comes to mind. But the second is val kilmer who played his nemesis partner. Tom kaczynski and even though val unfortunately lost the ability to speak to a health battle in two thousand fourteen. It was tom himself. Who insisted there was no sequel without vow producer. Jerry bruckheimer tells people. Tom said we have to have him back. Tom was the driving force. We all wanted him. But tom was adamant that if he's going to make another top gun foul had to be in it. He's such a fine actor and such a good individual he goes on to say we had such a good time on the first one and wanted to bring some of the gang back together again. It was really emotional. Experience for all of us was a long time getting there but we did top gun. Maverick was actually just pushed back. Four months that will hit theaters may twenty seventh of twenty twenty two

"It doesn't matter. I didn't read the script. i guess. Cool man i mean marlon brando also definitely heard a lot of people monster whatever but like i would say the the You know val kilmer might be in more of a brandish place in his life now. But i feel like at that point. Brando's brand new brand comes out on. Top is the only entertaining part of that final product of that money. Really so i feel like like what val kilmer going back. I have not seen the val kilmer. you know. It's all self documented. Haven't seen it hasn't come out yet right. i think it's in theaters. I wanna see it or notice about drp. Yeah like the story. I've read about like he should have been a character actor but he was just too good looking and he just made him the star of everything. It's like no. He was like a character actor. The doing like method doing suzuki like being like not breaking character off camera the whole time and it's just like the tragedy is just so good looking. They had to make him the lead in everything they had to make him. Batman he right this. I've heard this narrative. I think he would have been a jerk even if he was but i do think it's true that and just crazy i mean this whole thing. I mean you if you read that. That profile right is whole saying his christians the christian science with his throat cancer. And he thinks you know he's like he's obviously in kind of a semi eldest place at this moment..

"Because i didn't know much about him and All i knew was that story that everyone talks about I knew that he had some weird thing with women that came out. He dresses that had on. Yeah he also had a podcast for a while. That was completely off the rails. Okay yeah i just thought maybe it's gonna be too weird for me but it's not it's it's like right up my alley and the one thing i'll say spin it back to you. But is that he lives in his childhood home And the reason that's poignant for me is that We just moved into macho them. I'm renting my my childhood home right now and i mean he bought his right. We don't know the chain of custody of that house. But i'm renting it and it was weird for me. It was like a whole process for me to go back. This is david chose fashion. I'm i'm going to reveal something of myself in this jay show review. But you know i was. I felt weird about it. Like i didn't wanna live there and that's a nice place was always a nice place. There's good memories there. There's less good memories there. There's bad memories there. But you know we need more space and like looking at the real estate market and me being the escapist that i am an investing in real estate. It's just terrifying for me. So this opportunity came up. The renters have moved out and and my folks offered it to us. I knew april wanted to be there scrape for zuma but for me. I wasn't super into it. And like i didn't really wanna live there and even after we moved in. I'm like don't like it still doesn't feel like me but to see what he did to his about to start painting the walls right. Show the whole house into an are so yeah it's like it's like paint everywhere bizarre clay. I couldn't like thinks straight in a place like that but it just it gave me permission to own my situation if that makes sense so early on in the episode that i watched which was episode two will arnett and denzel curry. This really brilliant. Young musician I just thought it really kinda gave me permission to own. Where i'm at in a way and i didn't expect that from talk show like so you know when you go that deep i have such respect for it and it works. It's not just like going deep to try to be cool. It's like authentic at work. it's so authentic. There's a method to the madness that plays into why he's in that house and the very strange you know manner in which this show unfolds. Because it's nothing if not you know. Anarchy and chaos. But he's so vulnerable and he's so creative and he's so original that you riveted by it and so these episodes essentially work like triptychs like they're a couple usually three interviews that are there that you toggle back and forth between. He's talking interesting people while he's also painting the portrait and doing strange role. Play like i watched two of the episodes threes we should say it's streaming on on fx. There's only four episodes. I wash episode. Three and four threes with rain wilson. My friend neil strauss and erika garza episode four has stevo And my erskine in it and val kilmer pops up off. I mean val kilmer like it's insane this guy. But i can't even describe the show because it doesn't like no like bo burnham's inside it doesn't match up to anything that we're familiar with but bose show is even more accessible in a way see little more straightforward not like. This is kgo. Imagine david show covered head to toe and paint and throwing paint on the wall and and covering his face and clay. Extrapolate that into this show. That's a pastiche of interview meets art project meets performance art with animations and archival footage of him as a kid grays of dancers unbelievable. Yeah yeah but truly what it is is an excavation of his psyche and a process for him to heal his emotional childhood trauma. Which i think is part and parcel of why. He lives in his childhood house like. He's a prisoner of certain loops that play out in his head that become manifest and you can see him struggling with how to overcome them and so many of his conversations are about you know processing that in real time in conversation with people who have analogous childhood trauma experiences and in his childhood trauma. Like well he has to that. He talked about an episode to that was one is when he was four years old. He was sent away to korea ripped away like his parents. Shipped them off because they needed to get rid of one kid because they they had a financial problem i think and they had to move in with family members but they didn't want three kids and so they chose him because i think he thought he was the oddball and he and that just mess for years old. I'm being sent away. It's like. I can't even imagine that. And then while he was over there he suspects he doesn't have clear memories of it but suspects sexual abuse in korea. I believe so. And you know where i live now is where my childhood trauma happened. So it's like. That's what i mean by permission for recognition and also an opportunity like there's is every year back in this house. You have an opportunity to not just revisit that passed but work through it so that you can develop a new and healthier relationship with your past and with this domicile. Like i think it's a gift in certain ways that might feel uncomfortable right now but i think the show shows you a guy struggling in real time with just how to do that. It's amazing it's like it's amazing like the that's the key i just didn't expect so right. You gotta make it your own. You gotta you gotta work you gotta do day-to-day stuff. And he does do the work. He guides them on a guided meditation. There's nothing i want more right now than the david show guided meditation. I think what draws me to him is that he it's one thing to say he's he's vulnerable but he has such a big heart like he leads with his heart like it's just it's right on the surface like he wants to connect with other people so profoundly and you could see his struggle. And that's very appealing. There's a humanity to that guy. That is really irresistible and utterly fascinating and at the same time. He lives his life. Yes he's got a lot of money but that aside like he allows himself to be so free and childlike and his art is all about trying like doing everything he can to make sure that that doesn't get calcified. It's so physical art It's incredibly physical. And he's not the only artist that's like that there's a lot of really physical but he is exceptionally physical and it's all about losing trauma episode. You should when you watch episode to what he and Denzel curry create together is is magical like i hadn't even heard of denzo curry before..

"A demographic With Val Kilmer, Val Kilmer. They just released a documentary that he isn't calling a documentary. He personally is calling it a film. But he, it turns out had been taking video for like the last 40 years like it turns out, like when you like, and part of it, So they just released this as possible festivals recent struggle, right? It's his entire life because and one of the things that you find out in this is that his Way back in the day. Um, he had a younger brother that passed away. Um, And but they would back when they were like eight would have, like one of the first people in their neighborhood to have, like a video camera like an eight millimeter camera. So they were filming even back there. Yeah, And so they He's been filming his into your entire life. And so this new film that's going to actually we're going to be able to watch. It's going to drop on July 23rd. I believe so he has this film that is about the entire you know the ups and downs of his entire life because he has all this footage, so it is a place along with His voice overs in his interviews that talk about a lot of these things, so it looks fascinating to me well, and what the speaking he uses a voice box right now. So is that the voice over or is this? Yes, The new started with some of each and you know, I think that you know, it's it's It's interesting the way that he talks about how you know he we know him, and he was the main character in a couple of those films way back in the day when he first dropped, But then it was okay. Well, he's the secondary character hanging out with Tom Cruise or he's the this So watching this whole self. Filmed autobiography. Is amazing, and so I'm really excited to watch it. And so we're going to be a B has a good attitude about his life, too, Since I've lived a magical life and I've been able to capture it. Yes, and he tire. It's Yeah, and he talks about the fact that it shows the ups and the downs and I made some mistakes, and I've done some things that were embarrassing and bad behavior. Um, but this is what you do so it's called Val scare easily a vowel and they have you know, they're like I said, they're screening it right now at the Con Film festival, and we are going to be able to see it in theaters starting on July 23rd. And then it's going to be on Amazon Prime video. The first part of August. I'm very excited to watch. This is not I don't think I'm gonna run out to the theater. And watch this. We'll see what I have going on. But I can see myself for sure when he gets on Amazon Prime video because I am curious to see you know, like him talking about, Um what we things about him other than I was in tune forever. Yes, you know, and I was in tombstone and all of those things so top gun or or even try to seen stories. And it's really interesting because he had, um, denied originally that he had cancer and then you know, you know, one of his actors and and, uh, and friends mentioned it instead. And he was like, No, it wasn't me, And then he ended up going public afterwards. And so we have seen more of that since then. Be the struggle to speak that exactly and you know, and him publicly, You know, he, he says, you know, I was recently diagnosed with throat cancer and I'm still recovering, and it's difficult to talk and be understood. So You know, just being able to get this out now? Yeah. You know when he is in a recovery stage, and he can kind of get it out. I think that that has to be wonderful to to share all this now and that have it be. Unfortunately posthumous, which is what a lot of times we happen where they go. Okay. He's passed away. And then somebody else makes this Yeah. This documentary Yes, is his own words and his own film, And it's his own life and 40 years of film, right? But that was kind of fun to go through. I'm sure it sounds like Let's see so it took them and I don't have this in front of me. But it took the directors and the producers. A really long time, obviously, to narrow this all down and make a cohesive story. And I hear that every time we work with the documentarian that there's so much footage that they're going, how do we make this a cohesive story? And that people can follow right. That's a lot of work. That is a lot of work, and they're the heroes in that,.

Yes, can we instead of Giving these cows a taste of freedom and then bringing them to the slaughterhouse. Could we not pardon these cows that managed to get away? You would think But right now, Indiana law enforcement is asking you to snitch. On these cows. They're asking to to report loose cows. Oh, wow. Yeah, not the more conservative ones. they they they have you know one post office but places where all it will take is just one person to catch it to spread it through the entire small town that's all it will take and like one there Wilson said those people when they get sick where do they go they have to come to Salt Lake in Utah county and then get treated it affects everybody one million coronavirus cases now been reported worldwide the respiratory diseases killed more than a thousand people and is found in at least a hundred and eighty one countries here in Utah we've seen it slows slightly and no new deaths reported as of yesterday from coronavirus Utah's unemployment sets a new record as it has done across the country our employment numbers here in Utah jump even further into uncharted territory a new federal report shows that twenty eight thousand five hundred and sixty residents filed jobless claims last week compared to nineteen thousand six hundred ninety the week before which is already quadrupled weekly record set in the Great Recession Utahns seeking state employment help were among the staggering six point six million Americans who did the same for the week ending March twenty eighth just shy of double the number who reported being thrown out of work the previous week and of course the home the system to take care of the homeless here in Salt Lake Salt Lake County it's being being can be hit hard because of this a Utah Salt Lake City leaders rather open an emergency shelter in sugar house earlier this year to help people stuck in the frigid outdoors they expected demand for the overflow space would would sort of Wayne this spring but almost providers now worry the corona virus pandemic in recent earthquakes will upended those normal seasonal rhythms adding pressure to an already strained it shelter system I mean I think you're going to be seeing more homeless people to just more homeless people because people are out of work in the United Kingdom is hitting pretty hard and frontline workers in pharmacy in pharmacies are being subjected to abuse ranging from violent attacks to verbal intimidation such as being told I hope you get coronavirus police patrols have been deployed to some outlets as deterrence mounting date so so be it there's not testing available at every single the pharmacy or chemist and as I call them in Great Britain and so if they don't "Live through the eighties. Val Kilmer is just one of those actors who has, you know, little space in your in your mind and heart. So, you know, between tombstone and top done. He wasn't even within Batman, although not one of the most favored, at least from my perspective. He basically took it to your absence. He he's been battling throat cancer. And I think he stepped back from the limelight as a result. It's seems that his medical condition has improved of late. And so he appeared in public for the first time, basically in two years at an organization, he supports called twain, mania. It's, it's basically a nonprofit that tries to teach people about Mark Twain, and his want for America, and some of the social work that he had done, and then, so people were very excited to see him out in public because, you know, no one really known how how he's doing and, you know, next year if you're if. View. If you're looking forward to more things with him, he's going to be appearing in the top gun sequel with Tom Cruise. Oh my. That is an exciting thing that is exciting for so many Tom Cruise who doesn't age? Yeah. Exactly. That's, that's right. It'll be interesting to amazingly, I have never seen top gun. I don't even know how that happened. I I'm supposed to be a get ready. So it's funny most people course, enter ensure when you say that people lose their minds and they're like, what the hell have you not seen gun but I am in the same boat as you so just it's an entertaining movie. That's, but there's these, there's this generation sap that prides themselves on their top gun now because it's like almost a so bad. It's good sort of right? 'cause it's like just taken, you know, men enjoying their manly thing for the styles. And Kelly McGillis was in it that, like, I'm so I don't know why. I think it was like Sunday, channel or something. They had it on, and I'm clicking by, and I see her. She looks amazing funny, could hurt style. I could almost see working now. It is obviously, you know, things come and go and then come back again. She was ever in was witness with Harrison Ford. All right with the Amish kid. Yes. Yeah. Great. We're directed at great, Danny Glover. Now the bad guy. Yeah. He does. Peter. We're no, Danny Glover. No, Peter was a director from offering robocup. No, peter. We're. I can't remember name a long time ago, but Peter wears a director from Australia's on some really good stuff. We like the last one because we've been inviting enjoying. Yes. Yes. I actually as a result. I brought a dozen to my office this morning today, national Donut day which, you know, one there some deals, which I'll talk about an effect, but national Donut, they actually started Kosov ation army back in World War, One actually sent people for the front lines to serve Americans baked goods as the way to kind of increase morale and make people feel better who are serving overseas. And so they started this day in the thirties, kind of honor that tradition of there, and it, it overtime morph into more of a national day about the Donut. And so people are very excited searches for donuts, which is already something people search for quite a bit up nine hundred percent this week and their deals across the country you can stop in both. Don't condone. And get a free doughnut with any beverage crispy. Crispy cream is giving away donuts out any purchases, NOP and shop. Walmart, basically, anywhere you go is, is, is trying to, you know, do something nice for their customers to, to remember this tradition. And then we the funny thing though is, and you look at most search donuts in the week, you know, most of them are pretty pretty standard old fashioned donor glazed donuts. But number one, search don't out of the week is vegan doughnuts. So who knows I guess, people are trying to find a healthier way to make them. Yeah. We have our poll out today. John F twenty five. What is your favorite Donut is chocolate glazed jelly, or other in the other more? Interesting poll to me, is, how do you spell doughnut because I see it? Both ways. D. O. U. A G, H and UT ordeal. Interested polls availalbe John. All right. Well, listen Dunkin. They drop the name of their from from their name Dunkin these days. Sarel the video the video of the week is this reminds me of the short. Well, no wasn't that short lived. But you think you know that you have no idea TV series where they followed celebrities around, and showed you what went on behind the scenes. But this is Kylie Jenner day in the life. Yeah, exactly, if the Dan life of Kylie Jenner she, you know, life is full of interesting and Monday and things, and she kinda shows off everything that's going on for her day. It starts with her waking up. And, you know, like the rest of us she brushes teach she take the shower against dressed, but then she goes out, and she has some meetings with Kylie cosmetics, which, I think I believe in cosmetic lines and cosmetic line. And so about eighteen million people as of last count have watched this video. So it's you know, I think it's a I, I don't know that I'm gonna be watching it. Other people seem interesting. I managed to get roped in to the makeup YouTube star battle, and I I've never watched any of them in my life. And yet, somehow I was hooked. So he you know, maybe will also somehow get get roped in and fascinated by the day in the life of Kylie Jenner. Sarah, thank you so much for joining us, a course Google trends expert. We appreciate it. Absolutely having. All right. Let's hit a quick break. We will be right back keeping here. Boston Herald radio with.

"That. Couple Warner Brothers has confirmed that Robert Pattinson is the new Batman in the next, Batman franchise robber, Pat, Patterson giving light. Yes. Twilight fame, so you guys like that. I mean. No. I do we just is this, the thing where you just once the Batman franchise ends. You just pick it up with a new Batman and you go from there again readings like they're doing. Not even that it's just okay. We're going to redo the story now. And give you a new Batman. He just doesn't fit the Bruce, Wayne Batman like no stereotype. You know what I mean? Like I wanna see, like what's his name? He just did the no did it. But I'm saying new new guy. He just did. He just did pardon my take with big cat. It was in the van with and we were talking about Sean McVeigh. No, no. I know the I know the good looking guy. Yeah. The good looking guy Stephen Shammy, Steve Shammy. That's steve. Can you name the love can you name the actors joins company? It was about man. Michael keaton. Abed pledges then Aflac was Batman, Bill? Kilmer Val Kilmer was Batman. Yes. And the one. That's pretty much most of the modern ones. Yeah. Christian bale was awesome the night series. "But do you think of patents patent as the new Batman? I saw this. I'm kind of down for it. What is that these economics, right? Yeah. Not your thing. I mean I, I like your right. Not my favorite, Robert Patterson. Who is in these twilight movies. Yes. Apparently, he's going to be the one that's going to be taking over from that. What's his name? Well, Ben Affleck in Africa. Yeah. Ben Affleck was the what happened someone went to bed African said, you just don't want to do this. They wanted a younger guy, I think. No, I think that that's part of it. He they wanted a younger guy and also he just wasn't working for them. You know it wasn't really been afflicted. He did it in two movies. The Justice league. It didn't work the first or second time you're out. They, they wanted to go younger than don't want. See you. Yeah. It really who wants that guy. Anyway. Then Aflac I mean he's a good actor to just, you know, sometimes you don't fit the role, right? And the thing is, if you don't fit the role, then you shouldn't get a second second shot at it didn't work. So then you're out. Let's see who do I like is the best Batman. Michael. Keaton was good. Christian bale was good. My favorite was, obviously, it wasn't the, the movie Batman, but the TV show, Adam. Adam west. Absolutely. I if I had to pick a live action when it's probably Michael Keaton for me. He's, he's my favorite. I like Batman and Batman because he was it wasn't. It wasn't the movie Batman. It wasn't a serious. It was very, very campy, if you watch the TV series Batman from the sixties, it was one of those shows that was made for a kids, but made for Delta's. Well, there were tongue in cheek secret double-entendres there were there were like a jokes or inside things that only would appeal to adults that would go over the kids heads. And let's face it. Adam west was actually pretty funny, even though he didn't mean to be the way he would deliver his lines. He was hilarious. So I don't think they try to capture that in the in the movies and the film. But and there were different directors to who is the Batman that had with a cod piece. So. What was that Clooney's? So it was the first Batman in terms of movies, anyway, was timber, and did two movies with Michael Keaton. Right. And then after that, I think there was a third movie that was with Val Kilmer, instead of Michael Keaton doing, like seven or eight Batman. Yes. And then after that George Clooney. I think two of them, Robin. Batman forever. And neither one of those is very good. Those are the ones that hit the nipples on the bat suit. That's Joel Schumacher. Batman. Yeah. They he succeeded. Was -cluded the gay Batman. Yeah, I think he definitely Clooney's come out and said he played him as a gay character. That's what he was written like to him. Schumacher. That's why that's why. And then and then I mentioned Christian bale. So Robert Pattinson. All right. Well, maybe I guess he'll do good. Yes. Seems like he's been he hasn't done a lot of big movies ever since the twilight one. So most people know him for that, but he's done a lot of good art house movies. Like smaller releases the not a lot of people get to see. And he's, he's a great actor, but he the brooding Batman, another Bruening Batman. So they got the dark
