"January 28th. Happy Friday one and all. Hey, if you're thinking of hitting the slopes this weekend, you may want to bring a lawn chair in a book to pass the time you'll likely spend in the lift line nearly 60 million skiers visited U.S. resorts last season, making it the 5th busiest season for the industry on record. Despite many ski areas not being able to open until well into December, this season's numbers are already looking like bell explode too. Why? Well, it may be partially because of a business move by a certain mountain conglomerate. Yes, that's actually a thing. A move that probably has the company questioning its strategy. We're talking about Vail resorts Inc, which started as one modest ski area in Colorado, but the company has grown spending the last two decades plus buying up local mountains across the country. Plus three in Australia, but who's counting, right? Vail resorts now has 37 ski areas in its portfolio. Much to the chagrin of locals living near those aforementioned ski areas. The company has been criticized in the past for catering its past programs and amenities to more affluent international travelers rather than the people who actually live in the general area of the mountains it acquires. And speaking of past programs, that's what's gotten veil in a bit of hot water this season. Back in 2008, the company rolled out its epic pass, which shook up the industry according to The Wall Street Journal. Skiers could buy one pass that granted them access to several of veiled properties. It was a win win for skiers who got to try different resorts and for veil too, which entered the ski season already flush with cash from those sales. But this season Vail resorts did something that had folks scratching their heads. It dropped the price of its epic pass by 20%. That of course sent buyers into a frenzy. In December veil said it expected to sell 2.1 million epic passes. 700,000 more than last season, according to The Wall Street Journal. You can probably see where this is going. 2.1 million epic passes means a lot of folks at Vail resorts. Lots of visitors coupled with COVID induced staff shortages has spelled trouble for many of veil's properties. One frustrated skier turned their anger into an Instagram account with almost 35,000 followers. Won the documents overcrowding it resorts on the epic pass. Followers report waiting 45, 60 even 90 minutes in line to ride the chairlift at some locations. Veil resorts chief rival altera mountain company didn't slash prices on its multi resort icon pass, which directly competes with the epic pass, altera doesn't publicly share numbers, but in 2019, the company said it had exceeded its estimate of selling 250,000 icon passes. A far cry from 2.1 million to be sure. Still, altera owned mountains aren't escaping the crowds either. Washington's crystal mountain recently implemented a policy that would force skiers to make reservations to get on the lifts. After pushback, especially from folks who had spent nearly a thousand bucks on an icon pass for unlimited visits to the mountain, executives changed course, and implemented a reservation system for parking instead. Listen, we get it. For many folks, nothing feels better than a hot drink at the end of a long ski day. But until heightened demand dies down or until veil resorts reins.

"That is going to be producing. That's actually what we've contracted for to begin and as we get to that scale that centralized hub facility is really to get to larger financial scale for our business. Revenues driven by tons does ultimately driven by the tons that we process. And that is people can tell you. Keep dragging your quarters is coming up. Non linearity wise growing non linearity is because of the fact that this manufacturing base is also growing number nearly so as that continues to pace and go forward. We have to grow lockstep. And that's happening now in much quicker that we've ever seen in chunks. Well we haven't seen anything yet are gonna be nice. It's very time on the industry ministry in the sorry to be clear. But i'd say for the first time and these five years of our history this year especially we're seeing this pronounced focus from them on the need for recycling scrap from a strategic perspective. Because they're worried about getting lithium. Nickel and cobalt is different critical materials. And they want our you know as we are moving towards to be up and running which of course a lot of great financial benefit but strategic benefit. "But i think it's really important not to drive past the fact that we continue to see strong growth in asp's across the whole marketplace driven by higher full price realization. We've been talking about for several quarters and lower markdowns and leveraging the capabilities of identifying our inventory. Knowing where we wanna put it putting it in the path of the consumer optimizing it between ourselves and our physical locations or digital locations and increasingly providing that endless access to some of our wholesale For some of our most strategic wholesale partners All of these things are contributing to a higher level of full price realization across the marketplace. And so we do believe that. This is the base from where we want to operate as opposed to a moment in time. And that's driving profitability for nike at a moment that That where there's lots of of disruption so. I thought that was kind of an interesting look at. Maybe why they're not just jacking. "March. And here he is on that show hotline. Okay, I see him there, too. Mary. Hello, Dan. Welcome back to the show. Good morning. Thanks for having great to be here. Nice to have you back with this. Dan, Listen, we've covered in past weeks on the show with folks from Vail Resorts really have the resorts have had to pivot there protocols and procedures this year and from what we're hearing. Overall, the ski resorts have been doing pretty well. Travelers have adapted, and they've had some great skiing with less people on the runs. So have you seen a strong demand as well? And where people going most? Absolutely adapting. It is a great way to put it s O that he calmly we focus on sending throughout. Where's all over the world. So this year? Obviously, we're not sending people to To Europe in Japan s So we're really working out of the woodwork, folks really on the domestic resorts and, um and we're sending people all over the place all over the U. S. And really, what we're finding is that people are really interested in going our Volume of calls that we have is significant to move up from last year, and people are are working with us to help them navigate through all the code protocols and the restrictions and off all the chaps from people who have never been skiing before. So a lot for coming coming West Indies but mostly West, either to ski for the first time or no interest in seeing to just be applied them up. All right, that's great to hear dance, since everyone has had to adapt and pivot, including airlines and hotel industries, who've relaxed cancelation policies, and the airlines have actually eliminated change fees. What do you recommend for anyone who might be looking to still book a ski trip? Whether it's president's weekend coming up next month or for the spring? Is there such a thing as a refundable ski package or something like that? That's a great question. Um, we worked with thousands of different lodging, properties and resorts and everyone has kind of their own policies, so there's no true ski dot com policy. However, we have negotiated. Ah lot of flexible cancelation policy is with our partners and we actually we were kind of putting some of the stuff together Earlier in the year, we thought that book now was a little bit too strong for today's environment. So we started thinking about how RSVP'd was a little bit later and then kind of turned RCP into refundable ski vacation packages. So we're a great resource of travelers. They know that they want to travel, but they're not sure what the future holds so we can help direct them to the right type of vacation package. With either small or no deposit and flexible cancelation terms. There's absolutely all sorts of options for for people who We're looking for something refundable, right? Oreste CPR like it. All right, So I'm gonna have absolutely the flexibility right now is so important. You know, For the most part,.

In the Weirdest Ski Season Ever, Big Resorts are Booming

"About this time of year most years a lot of people start dreaming about their upcoming ski trips but this year is possibly the weirdest year ever for skiers and snowboarders last year marked a turning point in which two giant conglomerates took over the ski industry in two thousand eighteen. Colorado private equity firm called k. s. l. partners got together with another investor and launch the multibillion dollar altera mountain company altera snapped up big-name resorts including steamboat springs mammoth resorts in california and deer valley resorts l. Terrorism enormous rival vail resorts went on a buying spree to last year. Veil the biggest ski resort company in north america continued scouring the country for acquisitions the bottom line. These dueling mega corporations as the wall street journal. Call them bought. Most of north america's top snow resorts and started selling ski passes that work at dozens of locations in twenty nineteen veils. Epic pass was good. At sixty nine different global resorts alturas icon. Got you into forty-one resorts from colorado steamboat. Ski resort to switzerland zermatt. The numbers climbed even higher. During the two thousand twenty ski season their strategies aggressive acquisitions and virtual multi mountain season passes allowed the to dominate the industry. If you're a ski company mogul the financial future. Looked amazing notice. I use the past tense. There there's not an industry exact who saw cove at nineteen coming or how it would devastate the industry last march. More than ninety percent of america's resort shut their doors abruptly as a whole. The industry lost about two billion dollars. According to the national ski areas association veils fiscal twenty. Twenty revenues fell thirty percent. Altera is privately owned but likely to affect the same pain so you might assume that. The outlook is pretty dark this season. Well you might be wrong. At production time vale. Stock price was close to a record high. Almost two hundred eighty dollars a share. That seems head-spinning. On the one hand you have an industry that relies on traveling and gathering together in a year when both restricted but so far the outlook for vail tara is far from that of a year without snow. Sales avail season passes of already surged twenty percent this year reports the colorado sons jason blevins. Why with indoor activities. Few and far between outdoor recreation of all kinds has skyrocketed moreover to comply with regional cova capacity restrictions. Some resorts are restricting. Day lift tickets. They're giving first dibs to. You've got it. Season pass holders vail now. Terra designed multi mountain. Ski passes as a way to make sales all year long and take a little of the sting out of paying the lift ticket window but now a season pass has become almost essential for snow lovers. If you don't have one you might not ski at all and even if you do you'll have to reserve your trip ahead of time. Once you're there the experience will be very different. Not surprisingly you'll have to social distance in lift lines at some resorts. You won't be allowed on a lift or gondola with anyone. But the companions you came with most indoor dining in bars or closed you may have to reserve a parking space and the resorts would prefer that you steal a day off mid week and skip that weekend skiing. These safety precautions are designed to keep ski resorts open and keep skiers and snowboarders lining up with their boots keys and wallet. If cova cases start climbing near your favourite mountain though it could all change overnight in the meantime we have a few words of wisdom for you. The intrepid skier be patient. Watch out on those double black diamonds and don't forget. Bring your lunch

Vail Resorts invests in massive Nebraska wind farm

"None of the thirty four ski resorts owned by Vail are in Nebraska but the company is investing in the states. Abundant wind-power. That's enough to offset more than ninety percent of the electricity used at all avails. North. American resorts just give you an idea of scale to about thirty thousand homes worth power annually for twelve years. That's cates Wayne Wilson Fail Senior Director of Sustainability. She says, the power purchase agreement helped bring the wind farm online this summer. So for us, it's really important in our renewable strategy that we're bringing new renewables to the grid and the project takes Vail resorts close to the company's goal of zero emissions by twenty thirty, and we're really excited and proud of that, and we're also looking at the local level of how can we engage in solar and wind and other renewables on the ground where resorts are. It's time to think about buying your ski pass. That's because the ski industry he has been consolidating over the last few years. Colorado giants Vail Resorts and Altarum Mountain Company has been doing two things each has been buying up resorts across the country country and abroad and they've been creating huge season pass programs the give pass holders access to the mountains they own as well as to partner resorts all over the globe globe as the two fierce rivals focus on selling more and more season passes daily lift ticket prices get ever more jaw-dropping last season season daily passes to vail or beaver creek another high end. Colorado resort broke two hundred dollars for the first time making those to Vail owned resorts the most expensive in the US. That's a hefty fee especially. If you want to bring the kids why so pricey will impart the strategies to force you to make the comparison and determined that a pass is far more economical than buying daily lift tickets why spend two hundred nine dollars to ski for a Single Day at Vale when you could good spent about a thousand dollars to ski all winter whether you're in Vermont or Utah even Japan for people who are sure they want to ski at least a few days this it's winter a pass from one company or the other can save you a bunch of money. Veils epoch pass is good at sixty nine different resorts the icon which Altera Tehrik created just last year will get you into forty one resorts from Colorado steamboat to the icons newest European Destination Zermatt in Switzerland. It's not easy to give a head to head comparison on prices because the potential combinations are dizzying. Do you want ski in only one state while there's a price for that. I want unlimited skiing including over holidays everywhere. That's different current prices unveils season passes range from about four hundred dollars for local resorts to nine hundred sixty nine dollars to ski anywhere including new resorts in Japan and Australia. Alturas cost around five hundred dollars for local resort pass say Colorado's winter park to just over a thousand bucks for access to all forty. One destinations and there are discounts for veterans teran's in children and for people who can skip the most popular holiday times. If you're shopping get actress spreadsheets depending on how much you ski either pass could save you megabucks compared to a single day lift ticket but you knew this was coming. There's a catch to get these discounts. You have to be a planner owner low prices and before Thanksgiving that's because a few years ago the rivals parent companies realized it would be smart to book revenue while Violets still warm out there rather than waiting for unpredictable Mother Nature to deliver customers early season pass revenue wooden just smooth out the bumpy nature of the ski a business it would give each company predictable revenue stream and for Vail boost share prices just like subscription businesses everywhere of course if you're an individualist. They're still bumper stickers on old vehicles in the Colorado rockies that say F- Vale you can still find an independent independent mountain or to those family mountains whether in Colorado or any other mountain state or often more down to earth not to mention cheaper than the glitzy resorts. "Snow sports contribute. Nearly seventy three billion dollars and nearly seven hundred thousand jobs to the US economy earlier this year udalls group published its own economic report during low sell for us. We found that the average number of jobs lost across the country is over seventeen thousand and the average revenue losses. Just over a billion dollars. Of course. Weather and snow seasons can vary quite a bit in response to a question on preparing for climate change, a Representative from Vail resorts said they're not too worried. They're having a really good snow year. And that's true. Chris linsmayer is with Colorado ski country USA an industry group that represents twenty three ski areas in Colorado this year, we've had plentiful early season snowfall. But he says it's important to note that over the long term the mountains have been seeing more frost free days, which has a huge impact on our industry, especially in the early season as resorts are utilizing manmade. Made snow and working to get the resorts open. That's certainly trend that we've seen and it's a trend the ski industry can't ignore changes. Certainly something that are resorts are seen affecting their business in in our taking seriously and trying to come up with solutions to it small resorts like arapahoe basin and big ones like Aspen, we actually debuted our newest summer activities center up on Snowmass this summer called loss forest. That's Christian nap with the Aspen skiing company, and we've got several cool activities built into the forest up there for families to enjoy there's an alpine coaster up there. We've got a giant rock climbing wall and we've really continue to build out our mountain bike downhill program as well. But he says Aspen is also focusing on how to make and keep more snow on their slopes for the fall winter and spring we are investing in more snow making coverage pipelines holding ponds more brushing on the mountains. You can open. With less snow all those things, you know, we want to be prepared going forward. Back at arapahoe basin. Mike Nathan says they're preparing that way too. And he says while summer offerings aren't a silver bullet. It will definitely help their.

"Till rates. Initial public offering are due to end next week. Just tell people till Ray cannabis cannabis. Canada and privateer has like seventy six percent of the company back to Vail resorts was people thought was joke when I remember the IPO million years ago. Bob kits CEO cannot just state the success story that's been over the last ten years the moonshot it's been the real estate angle in the skiing angle. Sure. Go right ahead. I will say though that the veil is down eight tenths of a percent. Last year was up this year before coming out with a lower earnings projection. And so now it's going to have a loss for twenty nine hundred ten years. Do you want to make twenty six percent per year? Apple computer, I get it or, you know, named the other company Vail resorts, very cool mountain MTN banker give us a brief there. We start Monday, right? We do and CitiGroup actually happens to be the only company in the S and P five hundred that is scheduled to report on Mondays through the week. I think Morgan Stanley ends at all. Thursdays there. Right. We get all of the top six. Stay J, P Morgan and Wells Fargo Wednesday. You've got the Bank of America. Sacks. And then Thursday's Morgan Stanley. What do you expect? Well, look, I mean, you should. Got the Jeffries news today. I miss it. Weaker sales and trading right. So the challenge will be did the fourth quarter volatility really helped them in terms of their trading business or hurt them. That's. This is really important. And you the pro at this running equity coverage over these if there was a trading screw up in the fourth quarter for any given Bank. We don't learn about it on the earnings call usually we learn about it in some form x number weeks later, right? Yeah. Me things do have a way of trickling out. When you get to the quarterly filings to US regulators. That's where the sort of thing. David wilson. Thank you so much a equities and stock market and also on the banks for is. Well, that was great with David Welsh on autos these guys out in Detroit or so wired up. Yeah. They realize how grim it wasn't Detroit. I did not realize they're already rationalizing and really getting set. Oh, yeah. In fact, I think that there's there's a slight decline in Canada that is the GM headquarters. She's on business stuff in somebody lasts me about it. And to me one of the great great mistakes in business is conflicting a fixed cost in pretending. It's variable costs in an autos that is fundamental. What percentage is really a fixed cost? So if they go from seventeen million units down to fifteen million units, that's a huge move on a fixed cost base. That's right. And I think that's really. The profound which is why they are closing plants executives in planners. A lot of times talk themselves in thinking something's a variable costs like looking at EBITDA and think that is a real sort of jumped John Tucker is a fixed cost we understand. This more vary than you. That was great. Thank you to David. Welsh. David Wilson, David Westin. Three david's. They're moving in a Friday futures. A negative nine futures negative seventy-five Vicks. Do You have a Purchase or Usage Brand?

"Then Get ready for the customer code. Your audio guidebook for creating incredible customer journeys your hosts, genie Walters, and Adam to pork are two of the most recognized and respected names in customer experience, and they have dedicated themselves to helping you improve your customer experiences. And now it's time for Adam and Jeannie. So Jeannie run-up there's so I heard. Yeah. So I hear all the time. Question, would you rather have buyers or users. Well, that's an interesting question for my business model, isn't it? I would say I would say users. We want people who are using the services and the products that we provide wall. Can't you have both? Well, they need to buy it. I. Exactly. And that is where I imagining because there was an article in Harvard Business Review called the most successful brands focus on users, not buyers. And my, I just sort of gut reaction was well whilst focus on both what they make a really good case about the strategic difference between the brands focus on buyers and focus on users. And one of these distinctions really hearkens to a message. I think we've talked about about one hundred times on this podcast which is focusing on the customer experience and on retention, but it goes a little deeper than that. I thought it'd be interesting for us to chat about it a little bit today. Yeah, I think it's, you know, the article itself in the study, I think was really interesting because it's basically putting kind of a different lens on what we do talk about. And I would say on, you know, episode three hundred plus we probably talked about three hundred hundred. But the idea of that post purchase experience and how you can really engage people not just to buy your products but to engage with the brand, which is actually what creates that emotional connection in that loyalty. And so I loved the example in the article about, you know, it's basically the makeup counter versus Sephora. And if you think about the makeup counter, which I know you always do at him at a Macy's or something that's really about you might you might ask for some help, selecting something. You might get a little, you know, overdone makeover there, but you're not really engaging with the idea of this is my brand and they're taking care of me and I want to know more about working with them where you might make a purchase and you might make a big purchase, but then going to a Sephora, you have access to not just the products and not. Just the people who want to sell you the products, but they have so much more to the relationship. They give you instruction. There's community involved with their apps and services around the products. And so it's much more reassuring as a consumer to walk into a Sephora and get that kind of support and that kind of experience rather than just buying something that you know they want to sell you. So that example really stood out to me because I think it is essentially the same product. It's just a totally different approach to let spend a lot of money getting them in the store to buy versus let's getting them. Let's get them in the store to provide the experience and outside of the store and really with our brand. So it's a, it's a cool way to think about it. It is because we've always talked about the difference between transactional and relational approaches. They're taking a little bit further. I would say with a strategic approach. Coach from a marketing perspective and a lot of ways, but also from a customer relations standpoint. For instance, one of the takeaways ahead was purchase brands emphasize promotion usage, brands emphasize advocacy, and they use it example of Vail resorts who just change your entire marketing strategy and put out this program called epic mix. And it's basically they had their own social network to the skiers can game a fi at that performance data. They get to use photos and share it with everybody. And you know, this is competing with ski resorts at are focusing on their snow and focusing on discounted lift tickets and all this kind of stuff. So it's a completely different experiential approach. But it's also truly as shift in strategic focus because you really can't do
