"January 28th. Happy Friday one and all. Hey, if you're thinking of hitting the slopes this weekend, you may want to bring a lawn chair in a book to pass the time you'll likely spend in the lift line nearly 60 million skiers visited U.S. resorts last season, making it the 5th busiest season for the industry on record. Despite many ski areas not being able to open until well into December, this season's numbers are already looking like bell explode too. Why? Well, it may be partially because of a business move by a certain mountain conglomerate. Yes, that's actually a thing. A move that probably has the company questioning its strategy. We're talking about Vail resorts Inc, which started as one modest ski area in Colorado, but the company has grown spending the last two decades plus buying up local mountains across the country. Plus three in Australia, but who's counting, right? Vail resorts now has 37 ski areas in its portfolio. Much to the chagrin of locals living near those aforementioned ski areas. The company has been criticized in the past for catering its past programs and amenities to more affluent international travelers rather than the people who actually live in the general area of the mountains it acquires. And speaking of past programs, that's what's gotten veil in a bit of hot water this season. Back in 2008, the company rolled out its epic pass, which shook up the industry according to The Wall Street Journal. Skiers could buy one pass that granted them access to several of veiled properties. It was a win win for skiers who got to try different resorts and for veil too, which entered the ski season already flush with cash from those sales. But this season Vail resorts did something that had folks scratching their heads. It dropped the price of its epic pass by 20%. That of course sent buyers into a frenzy. In December veil said it expected to sell 2.1 million epic passes. 700,000 more than last season, according to The Wall Street Journal. You can probably see where this is going. 2.1 million epic passes means a lot of folks at Vail resorts. Lots of visitors coupled with COVID induced staff shortages has spelled trouble for many of veil's properties. One frustrated skier turned their anger into an Instagram account with almost 35,000 followers. Won the documents overcrowding it resorts on the epic pass. Followers report waiting 45, 60 even 90 minutes in line to ride the chairlift at some locations. Veil resorts chief rival altera mountain company didn't slash prices on its multi resort icon pass, which directly competes with the epic pass, altera doesn't publicly share numbers, but in 2019, the company said it had exceeded its estimate of selling 250,000 icon passes. A far cry from 2.1 million to be sure. Still, altera owned mountains aren't escaping the crowds either. Washington's crystal mountain recently implemented a policy that would force skiers to make reservations to get on the lifts. After pushback, especially from folks who had spent nearly a thousand bucks on an icon pass for unlimited visits to the mountain, executives changed course, and implemented a reservation system for parking instead. Listen, we get it. For many folks, nothing feels better than a hot drink at the end of a long ski day. But until heightened demand dies down or until veil resorts reins.

"But i think it's really important not to drive past the fact that we continue to see strong growth in asp's across the whole marketplace driven by higher full price realization. We've been talking about for several quarters and lower markdowns and leveraging the capabilities of identifying our inventory. Knowing where we wanna put it putting it in the path of the consumer optimizing it between ourselves and our physical locations or digital locations and increasingly providing that endless access to some of our wholesale For some of our most strategic wholesale partners All of these things are contributing to a higher level of full price realization across the marketplace. "March. And here he is on that show hotline. Okay, I see him there, too. Mary. Hello, Dan. Welcome back to the show. Good morning. Thanks for having great to be here. Nice to have you back with this. Dan, Listen, we've covered in past weeks on the show with folks from Vail Resorts really have the resorts have had to pivot there protocols and procedures this year and from what we're hearing. Overall, the ski resorts have been doing pretty well. Travelers have adapted, and they've had some great skiing with less people on the runs. So have you seen a strong demand as well? And where people going most? Absolutely adapting. It is a great way to put it s O that he calmly we focus on sending throughout. Where's all over the world. So this year? Obviously, we're not sending people to To Europe in Japan s So we're really working out of the woodwork, folks really on the domestic resorts and, um and we're sending people all over the place all over the U. S. And really, what we're finding is that people are really interested in going our Volume of calls that we have is significant to move up from last year, and people are are working with us to help them navigate through all the code protocols and the restrictions and off all the chaps from people who have never been skiing before. So a lot for coming coming West Indies but mostly West, either to ski for the first time or no interest in seeing to just be applied them up. All right, that's great to hear dance, since everyone has had to adapt and pivot, including airlines and hotel industries, who've relaxed cancelation policies, and the airlines have actually eliminated change fees. What do you recommend for anyone who might be looking to still book a ski trip? Whether it's president's weekend coming up next month or for the spring? Is there such a thing as a refundable ski package or something like that? That's a great question. Um, we worked with thousands of different lodging, properties and resorts and everyone has kind of their own policies, so there's no true ski dot com policy. However, we have negotiated. Ah lot of flexible cancelation policy is with our partners and we actually we were kind of putting some of the stuff together Earlier in the year, we thought that book now was a little bit too strong for today's environment. So we started thinking about how RSVP'd was a little bit later and then kind of turned RCP into refundable ski vacation packages. So we're a great resource of travelers. They know that they want to travel, but they're not sure what the future holds so we can help direct them to the right type of vacation package. With either small or no deposit and flexible cancelation terms. There's absolutely all sorts of options for for people who We're looking for something refundable, right? Oreste CPR like it. All right, So I'm gonna have absolutely the flexibility right now is so important. You know, For the most part,.

Weather and snow seasons can vary quite a bit in response to a question on preparing for climate change, a Representative from Vail resorts said they're not too worried. They're having a really good snow year. And that's true. Chris linsmayer is with Colorado ski country USA an industry group that represents twenty three ski areas in Colorado this year, we've had plentiful early season snowfall. But he says it's important to note that over the long term the mountains have been seeing more frost free days, which has a huge impact on our industry, especially in the early season as resorts are utilizing manmade. Made snow and working to get the resorts open. That's certainly trend that we've seen and it's a trend the ski industry can't ignore changes. Certainly something that are resorts are seen affecting their business in in our taking seriously and trying to come up with solutions to it small resorts like arapahoe basin and big ones like Aspen, we actually debuted our newest summer activities center up on Snowmass this summer called loss forest. "Till rates. Initial public offering are due to end next week. Just tell people till Ray cannabis cannabis. Canada and privateer has like seventy six percent of the company back to Vail resorts was people thought was joke when I remember the IPO million years ago. Bob kits CEO cannot just state the success story that's been over the last ten years the moonshot it's been the real estate angle in the skiing angle. Sure. Go right ahead. I will say though that the veil is down eight tenths of a percent. Last year was up this year before coming out with a lower earnings projection. And so now it's going to have a loss for twenty nine hundred ten years. Do you want to make twenty six percent per year? Apple computer, I get it or, you know, named the other company Vail resorts, very cool mountain MTN banker give us a brief there. We start Monday, right? We do and CitiGroup actually happens to be the only company in the S and P five hundred that is scheduled to report on Mondays through the week. I think Morgan Stanley ends at all. Thursdays there. Right. We get all of the top six. Stay J, P Morgan and Wells Fargo Wednesday. You've got the Bank of America. Sacks. And then Thursday's Morgan Stanley. What do you expect? Well, look, I mean, you should. Got the Jeffries news today. I miss it. Weaker sales and trading right. So the challenge will be did the fourth quarter volatility really helped them in terms of their trading business or hurt them. That's. This is really important. And you the pro at this running equity coverage over these if there was a trading screw up in the fourth quarter for any given Bank. We don't learn about it on the earnings call usually we learn about it in some form x number weeks later, right? Yeah. Me things do have a way of trickling out. When you get to the quarterly filings to US regulators. That's where the sort of thing. David wilson. Thank you so much a equities and stock market and also on the banks for is. Well, that was great with David Welsh on autos these guys out in Detroit or so wired up. Yeah. They realize how grim it wasn't Detroit. I did not realize they're already rationalizing and really getting set. Oh, yeah. In fact, I think that there's there's a slight decline in Canada that is the GM headquarters. She's on business stuff in somebody lasts me about it. And to me one of the great great mistakes in business is conflicting a fixed cost in pretending. It's variable costs in an autos that is fundamental. What percentage is really a fixed cost? So if they go from seventeen million units down to fifteen million units, that's a huge move on a fixed cost base. That's right. And I think that's really. The profound which is why they are closing plants executives in planners. A lot of times talk themselves in thinking something's a variable costs like looking at EBITDA and think that is a real sort of jumped John Tucker is a fixed cost we understand. This more vary than you. That was great. Thank you to David. Welsh. David Wilson, David Westin. Three david's. They're moving in a Friday futures. A negative nine futures negative seventy-five Vicks. I'm gonna call it under twenty..
Do You have a Purchase or Usage Brand?
"Then Get ready for the customer code. Your audio guidebook for creating incredible customer journeys your hosts, genie Walters, and Adam to pork are two of the most recognized and respected names in customer experience, and they have dedicated themselves to helping you improve your customer experiences. And now it's time for Adam and Jeannie. So Jeannie run-up there's so I heard. Yeah. So I hear all the time. Question, would you rather have buyers or users. Well, that's an interesting question for my business model, isn't it? I would say I would say users. We want people who are using the services and the products that we provide wall. Can't you have both? Well, they need to buy it. I. Exactly. And that is where I imagining because there was an article in Harvard Business Review called the most successful brands focus on users, not buyers. And my, I just sort of gut reaction was well whilst focus on both what they make a really good case about the strategic difference between the brands focus on buyers and focus on users. And one of these distinctions really hearkens to a message. I think we've talked about about one hundred times on this podcast which is focusing on the customer experience and on retention, but it goes a little deeper than that. I thought it'd be interesting for us to chat about it a little bit today. Yeah, I think it's, you know, the article itself in the study, I think was really interesting because it's basically putting kind of a different lens on what we do talk about. And I would say on, you know, episode three hundred plus we probably talked about three hundred hundred. But the idea of that post purchase experience and how you can really engage people not just to buy your products but to engage with the brand, which is actually what creates that emotional connection in that loyalty. And so I loved the example in the article about, you know, it's basically the makeup counter versus Sephora. And if you think about the makeup counter, which I know you always do at him at a Macy's or something that's really about you might you might ask for some help, selecting something. You might get a little, you know, overdone makeover there, but you're not really engaging with the idea of this is my brand and they're taking care of me and I want to know more about working with them where you might make a purchase and you might make a big purchase, but then going to a Sephora, you have access to not just the products and not. Just the people who want to sell you the products, but they have so much more to the relationship. They give you instruction. There's community involved with their apps and services around the products. And so it's much more reassuring as a consumer to walk into a Sephora and get that kind of support and that kind of experience rather than just buying something that you know they want to sell you. So that example really stood out to me because I think it is essentially the same product. It's just a totally different approach to let spend a lot of money getting them in the store to buy versus let's getting them. Let's get them in the store to provide the experience and outside of the store and really with our brand. So it's a, it's a cool way to think about it. It is because we've always talked about the difference between transactional and relational approaches. They're taking a little bit further. I would say with a strategic approach. Coach from a marketing perspective and a lot of ways, but also from a customer relations standpoint. For instance, one of the takeaways ahead was purchase brands emphasize promotion usage, brands emphasize advocacy, and they use it example of Vail resorts who just change your entire marketing strategy and put out this program called epic mix. And it's basically they had their own social network to the skiers can game a fi at that performance data. They get to use photos and share it with everybody. And you know, this is competing with ski resorts at are focusing on their snow and focusing on discounted lift tickets and all this kind of stuff. So it's a completely different experiential approach. But it's also truly as shift in strategic focus because you really can't do
