"That like nineties. Suburban white male angst is so pretty. It's still I mean it's still going but I mean yeah it just like has just grown exponentially yeah okay. So the VW veto quickly became the cultural icon. Powering one of the most significant counterculture movements to date during the hippy movement. Driving a small foreign car was considered a form of protest. People were protesting inefficient gas guzzlers. That plagued our nation's highways at the time but specifically the movement fell in love with the Beatles older brother the VW microbus as James May describes in his series. The car of the people quote it was in California where this fascist fugitive found. Its new loved up identity. That's cool man. Are Loving me James Mayor. Yeah it'd be cool to hang out with. American never truly felt the huge impact at the beadle hat on society shirt. It was a symbol for antiwar sentiments. Sure the only car to have its own Disney movie franchise about itself. I did see cars. Lightning McQueen never heard of them can but America never truly felt the impact of the beetle. The same way it was felt in Europe. We never got to experience what it like to view the beadle as the prodigal son of motor transportation the final Porsche designed Beato. Sold in. America was in nineteen seventy nine but that wasn't the end of the Beetle. In fact country that truly felt the impact of the People's car was none other than our neighbor to the South Mexico. Few countries felt such an intense impact from the beadle in nineteen sixty four. The first Volkswagen factor is open in Mexico and the People's car entered the market as a testament to the country's love for the beetle. The very last Porsche designed type one beetle. Roll off the assembly line in Mexico on July thirtieth two thousand three days you know it was painted Aquarius blue. Although you couldn't really tell because of all the flowers placed on its hood that day. It was beetle number. Twenty one million five hundred twenty nine thousand four hundred sixty four at least of the original design. People in Mexico were devastated to see a car that revolutionized their lives so much finally go and an entire ad campaign was created just to wish the car farewell but you know at that time they had the PT. Cruiser was just starting production. Yeah you down to Mexico you see so many PD cruisers all over even in an tonight. I saw like Baja version like fat tire. I want one. That'd be sick. Of course the beetle wasn't actually dead. It was in the nineteen nineties that helped give new life to the missing beetle. After all the nineties were somewhat similar to the sixties sixties in their ideologies. People still love the car and in the years since it went off the market the Beatles reputation had only grown in one thousand nine hundred seven. Wolfsburg announced that they would begin. Production of the new beetle the biggest difference other than the updated styling and better emissions and safety and pretty much. Everything else was the engines location. It was in the front now and we w address that in there I is that read quote engines in the front but it's heart his in the same place. Oh really good. The new beetle remained on the US market from nineteen ninety seven through two thousand ten and sold a total of four hundred thousand. Four hundred seventy seven thousand three hundred forty seven cars One of my personal favorites of this generation beetle was the Malibu Barbie version six collector. There's also the New Beetle R. S. I which had the VR six. Yeah really in it and it was all wheel drive. It had the Four motion they made. There's two hundred fifty of 'em well yeah. I remember that car from like one of the grant charisma games and it's always been in. The back of my mind is like if I'm going to buy beetle. That one was it. Black with gold racing stripes. I remember it as like silver. Okay yeah but it's so second it's got like twenty spoke wheels to with like a really thin tire after the new beetle. Vw released a more updated version. Now just called the beetle. The Beatles shared the same platform as the Jetta and was a radical redesign from the previous generation as an attempt to try and recapture some of the original Beatles charm. It actually does look very much like the original beetle I didn't know there hatchbacks. Either One of our editors bridget huge Volkswagen Fan. She has one and I was amazed when I saw the hatch. That's my story amazed Nolan. I was I was. I didn't know I didn't know if you guys are listening to this Streaming me and Joe are looking knowingly at each other like we know this is and we're looking at each other amazed all right. I was surprised all day in September. Two thousand eighteen so hold back on the hyperbole breaks hyperbole in September of two thousand eighteen. Volkswagen announced that the beadle would cease production in July of two thousand nineteen and true to their word. The final third Gen Beetle finished production on the ninth of July. Two thousand nine hundred they were. They were not nuts. Honestly you know I think the beetle is probably bound to return at some point. Maybe do you think it's going to keep going like how xbox is like will? This is the three sixty. So this is the one. And then the XBOX wind like they're gonNA keep like. This is the new beetle. My Buddy Chris. In High School he had a lot of hand me down like his mom gave him her old stuff so like his cell phone was like a pink razor phone and then it's car in high school was like a light blue new Beatles. Girls Stop My boss Dairy Queen when I was sixteen Drove a yellow one with like flower wheels. Oh Yeah and she was super racist. I don't know what that says about. Yeah that's conflict there. Yeah The Volkswagen Beetle Story I think it's complicated right The car was designed to be a tool and realistically it has always served that purpose perfectly. I feel like it's represented a lot of things over the years like it's not only a tool was currency one point. It was a form of protest Just like its image has changed so much over the years but it's somehow remained. The same car is crazy sad on any other car. We'll have the same impact that the beetle did for very long time. Thanks for listening to pass gas podcast. If you don't know already go follow us on Youtube. We got a channel. That's Full of fun. "S. Thank you keeps for sponsoring this episode. Porsche was enamored with the factory in Wolfsburg. Before leaving. He said to heinrich quote. Only now do I have the feeling that I've done something right. Unfortunately that trip to Wolfsburg his last not long after returning from the trip he suffered a severe stroke and never recovered. Burnin Porsche died. On January thirtieth nineteen fifty one and was buried near his home in Zell. Mc the birth of Volkswagen in Germany's darkest hour actually came to the company's advantage. The lack of previous experience meant that there are no prior company. Traditions that they were expected to follow thus vw was able to take the best from every car company and mix it with the German philosophies of manufacturing and design. They had a clean slate. The result was a company that was entirely new and unique as off. Put it quote. Doesn't blessing for us. We solved problems as we encountered them in our own way. Not by what the book told us but usually by improvisation ZIP ZAP is up in one thousand nine hundred hundred. Nordhoff congratulated workers for being able to build one thousand two hundred cars per day. That's a lot of freaking cars On top of that the company could now export their spunky little beal outside the country to even more places including Sweden Holland Belgium and Switzerland in one thousand nine hundred eighty three. The Volkswagen Beetle accounted for nearly twenty three percent of all new vehicle registrations for them. That's nuts that's all over the world or what I think just in Europe okay. Nineteen fifty five. The company was already announcing the creation of the one millionth beetle. It was a golden beetle. Covered shimmering jewel simmering Jews so thinking about that in like six or seven years now. They've made a million cars. You know it's crazy so this is reminding me of We'll house I'm writing when they first came out with like metallic paint They used fish skill in it and it took forty thousand herrings to paint one car parts. Yeah I don't know it seems pretty interesting. How did you even think of? This was a smashing Fishman. No like I do. And Wolfsburg Nordhoff was being referred to as the King of the Kingdom the well respected German magazine Eagle titled an issue called in Heinrich Nordhoff Kingdom. This guy was basically the man very much. Yeah that's the first thing I thought of John. Take my Gordon is coveted shimmering Jew in the back of nord-ost mind. There's always one market that he was struggling to get into and that was the United States. Volkswagen beetle wasn't undeniably German car years earlier in nineteen forty nine heinrich tried his luck in the US market and on January seventeenth forty-nine ben pond the leading Volkswagen exporters and to VW. Beatles arrived in the New York harbor aboard the MS Westerdam's when he was asked about the entire experience then pawn had one thing to say. We got a lot of publicity. That sounds good. Sounds like a good. No let me finish was all bad as it turned out. Americans were not so quick to forget the war. There is no pressing need for motorization. In the same way there was in Germany in fact most of these revolutionary changes made by the Volkswagen factory were inspired by US factories. So there wasn't anything particularly revolutionary to Americans about the car at the time at least nothing impressive enough to make people forget that the car was still Hitler's car not a single was interested in the beetle. In fact in one story Ben. Pon drove the car from New York to Massachusetts in a snowstorm. Show the car to a dealer but once the dealer solid car in front of his dealership from the window. He didn't even go outside to take a look at the thing. Americans just did not want the Beetle. Come out look at it. I ain't cold out there. Come on one. Customs official even laughed at pawn when he showed them the car and said. You WanNA sell out here. Good Luck Buddy. I mean that sarcastically. The American people wanted big cars. They wanted because that's US baby. Big Butts big seats. You know what I'm saying. Here give me frigging house own. We're maybe in one thousand nine hundred four Heinrich Hired Carl. Hahn eight twenty seven year old economist. Who was one eager beaver? Another animal dammit. And he couldn't wait for challenge. He was quickly promoted to the Volkswagen export department and the transfer. It couldn't have come at a better time by the mid nineteen fifty s. America was beginning to take a second look at the car. They had all laughed at those years earlier. While most American adults still viewed the car as Hitler's car a new generation of drivers coming of age and they were much less connected to the storied past of the beetle. Even then Americans were not very open to the idea of important cars servicing. An import was just too inconvenient. At the time domestic was cheaper and easier so they decided to use the same tactics that one over Germany to win over. The American market communities were given demonstrations showing how a beetle can improve their work. They toured the car to every community. Regardless of class service station and easy maintenance access was one of the founding tenants for Volkswagen and it was obvious that following the same strategy in America was the simplest way to gain Americans affection nor off sent out. Pr Man Will Van de Kamp with a name like will indicate you can't be a PR to camp with. That's a also fish. Dip Fish Fish stick company anyway and then. He reportedly had the temper of a preacher in the zeal of missionary. And that's like a quote from the past. That didn't translate like out. The Michigan Avenue not encounter people just like an enthusiastic angry. They know travels a preacher with a suitcase He was in charge of ensuring that a VW. Is every driveway in America. And you know what you did a pretty good job of spreading the word. His enthusiasm was contagious. From the sounds of it he basically shouted it's the Volkswagen way dealerships until they understood that they had to put the customer first always throughout the fifty s van de Kamp. It sounds like a simpsons character. Yeah Hey we'll then hear the Volkswagen way. Tell me anything different than that insist..

Wolfsburg was targeted by the allies and nearly destroyed but the war ended. Hitler was dead. It was time yeah. It was time for the Volkswagen to live up to. Its name is name was the people's car Ooh bye-bye now that the war was over. Germany was faced with the massive task of reconstructing a shattered country including resupplying. The transportation needs for the people after the war. Germany was divided into multiple zones. The British American Soviet and French sectors Wolfsburg was situated within the British sector and the factory was still under the British pocket book in the years after the war it was also under constant threat of being shut down but once the British and American sectors merged it became apparent that British Army Engineer Major Ivan. Hirst would be able to secure the necessary funding to keep the factory afloat. The country would once again be allowed to participate within the global free market in nineteen forty seven. Obviously these policies had a direct impact on the Volkswagen factory British officials representing the VW plant had continued to push further permission to export during all of these changes every single one of their requests export though had been denied but now the Germany was allowed to enter the market the VW plant was finally viewed as a way to ease the British expenses and in March of nineteen forty seven. The factory quotas were raised. The People's car would be allowed to be exported outside of Germany but only to the Netherlands Belgium and France. The first official export of the car occurred in August that same year? A massive total of five cars were exported and the process was a difficult. One selling quote. Hitler'S CARS TO COUNTRY. Hitler try to Concord. Seemed kind of absurd but it wasn't Hitler's car anymore. So anything can happen. I think they should should stop calling Hitler's car if they want to sell it. Probably not the best marketing hooked. This is a great car. This was Hitler's car. It was obvious that British Army Engineer Major Ivan. Hirst couldn't run the plant forever. He was a military man and while he loved his position at the plant he had a larger job that took priority but each time they tried to take her out of the factory chaos ensued. He ran a tight ship soon enough. The search for a replacement began but for the volatile plant to return to German hands. It needed someone who had expertise when it came to running a major factory. Former Opel head Heinrich Nordhoff. Remember him from the last episode mentioned him he had been barred from working in the American business sector since he had been given an award from the Nazis. A FEW YEARS PRIOR ON K. Not a good look opal was controlled by GM. And Mr Nordhoff was forced out of his job. Due to America's quote no nonsense policy on Nazi involvement after the war you know other than hiring Nazi scientists to develop bombs and stuff. Yeah and like the entire space program. Yeah let's not talk about. Yeah that's true Operation Paper Clip. Look it up. When it came to looking for a factory manager Nordhoff. He might sense. He was experienced in managing factories and since the VW plant was under British control. He was actually allowed to work there on January. First of nineteen forty eight Heinrich took up position as managing director of the Volkswagen. Plant by recommendation of major hearst upon his arrival to Wolfsburg Nordhoff noted that the factory still looked exactly like it did during the war. It was basically a pile of ruins that could somehow produce cars so he knew he had a lot of work to do. So we got the work while he was meant to report to hearst with each action the roles were kind of reversed. It was obvious that Nord off was the expert and no one complained. Once you took control. The first thing Nordhoff did was replaced all the English signs back to German ones. Oh that's the bathroom is been peeing in jars from meanwhile nineteen forty. Seven was a terrible year for Ferdinand. Porsche he had been moved from his original prison to the Dank Dungeons in dijon into John. That sounds like your APP album named Dude Dank dungeons dungeons. That's pretty good good anyway remember. He had been arrested by the French. Police For colluding with Hitler Hitler. Yeah that guy so at this prison in the in Dijon. They were not even given beds all around him other men involved in the war. We're being sentenced to death in the Nuremberg trials. So at least Porsche was better off than that. After twenty two months Porsche and his family were released from the French prisons and declared not guilty of their crimes as the French government only tried him regarding the forced labor of French prisoners The Porsche Corporation to this day still denies the use of forced labour in their factory. At the time just it's better just to come clean about it. You know. Yeah Yeah I mean there's no way right. There's no way that they didn't. I don't know the rest of his record was sort of six months after his arrival to the Volkswagen Factory Heinrich Nordhoff was still sleeping on the factory. Floor on a flimsy. Kat issues plagued the factory especially the lack of housing but most importantly there wasn't really a local market for the cars. Germany was still dirt poor. And those who have the money to buy car tended to steer clear of the word. Volkswagen makes sense also. The factory was amazingly inefficient. It took workers in a reported three hundred hours to build a single car so nordhoff had to reshuffle the factory line in order to imitate the successful style of the lines in Detroit. Normally that Nordhoff expertise allowed him to play with the budget. A little bit. Nineteen forty-nine was the first year the factory was given a firm quota of forty thousand cars and nord-ost reshuffling allowed the cars to be produced over two hundred dollars under budget nor off also rebuilt the factory. He figured out that having bombed out walls and ceilings. Kinda hurt company around. Yeah I remember when our office got blown up. That was really tough to come to work every day. Yes like where do I plug my charger in? Yeah there's no wall. Where am I snack? All my snacks. So Heinrich had the place tidied up a little bit. Most importantly he completely changed the entire decision making power structure of the factory. Using a general manager who controlled multiple departments head on and so on while that's super commonplace. Now this was revolutionary at this time in German history but ultimately the company was still controlled by the British government and while they remain about as far out of the picture as they could heinrich still had to answer to them in the end. Now if you owned a mega factory or make a corporation there's nothing that really cramps your style. More than unions nordhoff wanted to avoid as many unions and strikes as possible so he tried something radical. He tried to give the employees what they wanted. Before they unionized to get it including great benefits and a decent salary he also unified the factory and unlike hearst he was a German Heinrich Nordhoff was one of them and provided a great sense of morale to the entire building. Nordhoff never said I only we. He created the optimal environment for efficiency and constructive work environment for the workers. Wow treat your employees well and the renewal mazing. His goal was to take the one car every three hundred hours and turn it into one hundred cars every one hour by early. Nineteen forty eight cars are being produced and sold by the Volkswagen plant under nordhoff management. The only issue now was what to do with Ford and Porsche. Good question for Orlando Porsche. Porsche was released from prison and it was time to make an agreement with Volkswagen. It was his design and his car. After all you know except for all that stuff you kinda stole from Yosef Gains that. We discussed in the first episode. There you pronounce it. Yes you're out. Imagine so yeah probably checks out Ferdinand Porsche and Heinrich Nordhoff Matt and laid out some terms of agreement in short the agreement stated that Porsche would not accept any contracts any company that posed any competition. Volkswagen and that the factory in Wolfsburg would be allowed to use Porsche's patents for free in exchange Porsche would receive a percent of each car produced and sold under the Volkswagen Badge in any car made by the Porsche. Company would be able to receive service at any Volkswagen dealership interesting. That's pretty cool now. That sounded like.

Others who are considered prominent figures in the Third Reich were summoned to Frankfurt for trial at least Ferdinand Porsche was some summoned as he was in Austria at the time and and the war ended. He was actually allowed to drive himself to the trials. Everyone else present was imprisoned. The trials were part of operation. Dustin a process where figures involved involved in a Nazi party were questioned one by one and it lasted nearly three months Albert speer. The official who hated him repeatedly testified. That Porsche was is quote a useless engineer. WHO had no way to know the greater plan and doesn't belong there still Kinda complicit though Kinda I lien did wrote around airplanes Hitler? Yeah I'm not so convinced but Porsche was released uncharged. He didn't realize how lucky he was as most men collected in operation. Dustbin were later sent to the Nuremberg trials to be trialed and executed but Porsche went back home to Zell in Austria. In the days after the war ended British Army Engineer Officer Major Ivan Hirst would describe the city of Wolfsburg with its population. Twenty five thousand as an abandoned construction site but hearst was famously optimistic more so than Porsche and he knew that the place can be set right again and his job was is to do just that a British army engineer was gonNA rebuild a German automaker. According to hirst some parts of the factory appeared as if they had not been touched in years but now is about to change as the British government had immediately ordered the production of twenty thousand Volkswagen. Kubo wagon style vehicles to help fill the country's immediate the need for transportation and fuel recovery hearst hated the idea of producing a war vehicle in a time of peace but he was about to get lucky while combing through an abandoned part of the factory. He discovered an originals people car in storage he immediately fell in love at first sight and sent it to the British government for review soon after he had the government's blessing to construct the people's car instead creation. The car was covered in red tape and bureaucratic debate. People were hesitant about building the car but I wasn't about to sit back and wait for final approval. He immediately began building them. Food and provisions were scarce in the factory but workers can incense hearst's dedication and they work their butts off to make the future of vw a reality the VW factory was marked as military surplus and they tried to sell it. Not Literally anyone who may be interested including Henry Ford but no one was interested in the dumpster. Fire that the factory appear to be so it was the British ministries problem. The fix. There is no better way. They thought than try to turn the Volkswagen into illegitimate company. The groundwork for the Volkswagen's finally being laid the British government began establishing an interest system of services and dealerships. Carl theorizing a rival of Porsche was at the factory during the a timer rebuilding as Porsche was trying to stay. As far away from it he worked with the government to establish what would be known as the quote. Volkswagen way focus on service. Before four sales gearing the factory towards the customers not towards profit any dealership equipped to both sell and service vehicles and classes were taught in both German in in English to train incoming dealership employees Ivan. Hirst was a real stickler for quality. He was often seen driving the car off the assembly line. That way he could be the the first person to quality control the vehicles he helped produce he poured his heart and soul into the factory and the workers apparently love them for it on his birthday. Volkswagen employees -ployees gave him a car that read quote for our energetic British officer. Major I the rebuilder of the Volkswagen Company by the end of nineteen forty six I had had managed to produce ten thousand people's cars for the ten thousand car. Two pictures were taken one featuring her standing in front of the car smiling the other taken without without management knowledge feature to sign that said ten thousand cars on an empty stomach. How can we endure after all Germany was still in massive disrepair after the war? Your factory workers run a one thousand twenty four calories per day diet. Yikes half of what Dietitians recommend for a healthy adult. Money was worthless worthless as there's basically no economy left but that's where the people's car really came into its own the primary market that remained after the fall of Hitler's empire was the black market barter and trade ruled and one people's car could be bartered for a hundred fifty tons of cement or two hundred thousand bricks at sea bill. The House. Yeah for ones are yeah lights food clothes etc.. All of these were paid for in Volkswagen's the economy was a bust and buying buying a car was the last thing on the mind of German citizens so this was the best used for them. That's crazy that they're using cars as money. Yeah their money just means nothing because their government collapse. Yeah I'm going to build this car in a factory and then trade you for something. That's pretty sweet. Germany was beginning to demonstrate a basic economy theory in Europe. When one major European country suffers all European countries suffer as well so quickly plans are made eight to help the country rebuild while things were looking better for Volkswagen? Things were only getting harder for Porsche. He had no way to know what had happened to his beloved factory to him. Another insurmountable wall had been erected preventing him from completing his dream of mass affordable transportation. Shortly after the war a porsche was invited to a spa town near the border inside France a few days later Porsche received a knock on the door excitedly opening the door. He discovered discovered a handful of French. Police standing there to greet him the seventy year. Old Porsche. His nephew and son-in-law were arrested by the French police for their involvement in forced forced Labour Aka slavery in the Nazi party after all he was complicit with the forced labor but in the same way here. Okay the the guy who he ran a factory in Nazi Germany during World War Two. They were slaves working at his factor. Yeah the wasn't just complicit he was actively involved involved. Yeah once again porsches dreams of his people's car at seemingly met its end and that's where we'll pick up next time on our conclusion. The Volkswagen Beetle have done a number of these episodes and diving. This deep into history makes it hard to like own million Volkswagen's on the big fan of brand and it's like you. I like I like even like it's like board award. Those guys back is to what I think Volkswagen's case I think it's okay for you. Don't have to cancel volkswagens teams. That probably would have helped honestly. But I don't know then our episode of this this Volkswagen Factory today ads blah blah blah. I think the the whole effort by Ivan Hirst to rebuild. It just really admirable and I mean it will seem excessive transformed it into the fortune branded help rebuild German so I mean as always it's complicated. It's any solace like these Nazis spent so long developing this car and then they didn't really get to enjoy it and so we're like. Oh this is a really good plan. Let's use this for good. Yeah all right so Yeah I think there's this episode is a little dark but also there's got better and next episode is going to be a lot more fun. "Off Porsche wanted quality in its designs including spending spending hours and hours poring. Over blueprints of his tanks commissioned by Adolf Hitler Porsche operated in his own little universe. He was both respected did and hated for it. He didn't serve any part only himself and his views and he was never afraid to share that he had the knowledge and talent that Germany needed and he was fully aware of his value to Hitler and Hiller absolutely loved Porsche. But Hitler's opinion. Didn't matter much Porsche at this point. Apparently Porsche didn't really understand the war. At one point he asked Hitler to quote. Turn off the war as if they're low running low on fuel. He tried advising Hitler multiple times during meetings eatings. Even one stadium that only small men should be allowed to be inside of tanks that way portion could design smaller tanks. What we we need to start making smaller men I mean? I don't want to sound like pooh-poohing on Porsche. He was obviously very very intelligent. But that that just the idea of light in interest of wartime production He such a got that like sports car. Hot Roger Mentality where it's like. We just made smaller lighter and faster Blah Blah. And it's like did we want some big ask tanks man all right so nine hundred forty two porsche was sixty sixty seven years old and he had finally accepted that there is no end in sight to the okay boomer no. He accepted that his town of the strength through joy cars factory would be producing any joy cars anytime soon against his will. The factory is finally retooled to produce a rather wide variety of war machines. It would produce fuel tanks Mines Bazookas and Twenty Thousand v One flying bombs. The Nazis retrofitted the people's car with bigger wheels and a heavy duty frame for war. The factory eventually began producing the COUDL WAGON AKA the bucket seat car. These were redesigned Beatles with raised and strengthened lengthened chassis and a redesigned body with the same twenty five horsepower. Engine essentially these Kubo wagons were the German counterpart to the US Army's jeep and by the end of nineteen forty three forty one and a half percent of the factory's output worthies Kuba wagons. It looks like the thing. Yeah yeah well it's the thing basically Porsche Porsche. HAD RETOOL US factory for war in Austria in World War One so the entire process was something that he was used to but he was not thrilled about it. You know who is happy about Porsche. The Hitler When Porsche had to fly? He flew in Hitler's private plane. With Hitler's own pilot quote. Let the generals fly in the regular plans. I've many generals bull but only one Porsche. In fact Porsche was the only person in a position of authority who didn't have to wear a uniform and was the only man in Hitler's circle to never refer to Hitler as fuhrer so. Look Porsche. We got we got Hugo boss to design this the suit for you just want to put it on and on I mean we had it tailored to your body note. This is Hugo boss. Listen Thin Adolf. During the war. On average thirty percent factory workers in German factories were forced laborers. We're just GONNA recall what it is. They were slaves but the vokes but at the Volkswagen factory things were a little different. They barely had enough workers to build a darn thing. So a whopping eighty eighty percent of the workers at the factory were there because of slavery though. Apparently the factory was one of the more desirable places to be sent. If you had to be sent to be forced to work somewhere a Hungarian Jewish woman testified after the war that being selected to work at Volkswagen looks wagon. Factories felt like an quote unexpected joy when compared to the quote Can I try. Yeah there Nick Toon Dash Albuquerque or death through labor she had been facing at Auschwitz. Allied bombings of German factories became commonplace commonplace through nine hundred. Forty four and forty five. The Volkswagen factory was a massive target. It was just sitting in the middle of a field. There wasn't it wasn't isn't hard to hit so large scale operations began moving the valuable equipment offsite into safer locations including converting an entire iron mind into an underground armament production factory in less than six months as time marched on the bombings of the town continued through the end of the war just before nine. Am On April tenth. Nineteen nineteen forty-five the air raid sirens began to sound again. Initially people didn't think anything of it as they were being woken up by the bombings. At this time German officials they panicked people started shredding documents and burning any official pictures of Hitler or anything that may prove their allegiance to the Nazi party. Less than two days later American troops that enter the city and took control from the Germans. The factory was quickly acquired under. US control miraculously compared to the rest of Germany. The factory was pretty alright. Only about fifty percent of the factory had been damaged only twenty percent of it was considered completely destroyed so the US ordered the production of the Kuba wagons begins to continue for the US until the end of the war. They've been around for over one hundred and fifty years making high quality motor oil. They actually filed the first patent for motor toil which makes them the original motor oil by definition. They're the only motor oil with a dedicated engine lab where smart ask scientists run on specialized engine tests and figure out all kinds of science stuff. That makes your engine work good since eighteen sixty six they haven't stopped innovating and it shows. Valvoline is responsible for the first high mileage oil the first racing oil and the first synthetic oil plant. That's a lot of frigging I guys. I've only had one and I and that's losing my virginity. All valvoline oils exceed the industry standards to provide ultimate protection for every engine. That's why some of the best in the BIZ. His use it like racing legend and my second best friend. Mario Andretti and my other best friend Chris. Forsberg they both fused valvoline but the biggest reason I like valvoline is because their headquarters are in Kentucky. Which is where? The Volkswagen project had become a full enterprise quote. The town Craft Dick Freud wagon or strength through joy. Car Straight through joy car was created in the shadow of the factory in nineteen thirty eight by the time the first section was only eighty percent constructed. The town had already cost Germany. Over two hundred fifteen eighteen million reichsmarks with so much money invested already. The town was still only a single brick building a large open. hoster this is my town. Keep recalling Past episodes. Yeah but this reminds me of Ford Land. It's just like how. How do you fail so hard and just keep going because it's all about the belief like just pushing through will get you as all this is? Why Fire Festival happened? Because there's instances like this and like four lane just keep going just keep going. It's like you know what it sometimes you should just can quit Just in quit doing it. Not Everything is a good idea. Cut Your losses. It's like this his fault. This weird idea that like once you decide do something you should always keep doing it as a fine line. Yeah Look I did I. It was very successful in one part of my life so everything I come up with is going to be a great idea equally successful so they still. I had a long way to go. And they didn't have the money to get it done. One of Hitler's cronies and leader of the German Labor Department. Robert Ley loved the entire project and kept coming up with ideas. He threw himself into the work. Promoting Volkswagen project lay came up with a way of securing immediate funding. The strength through joy car savings book plan lay claimed that the program would help German citizens save their money people were given booklets and and they were. They would pay about two dollars a week or five rush marks to place a stamp in the booklet wants. The booklet was completely filled with stamps. It could be brought directly to the factory. The end redeemed for their Faria for Volkswagen. This makes me think like everyone's like man and five time machine go back in time. I'd kill Hitler but I do. I go back in time with like a nice printer. Print up a bunch of these stamps and I just give them out to everyone. Everyone and then everyone get a free car and it would bankrupt the Nazis or it would just mobilize all of them. uh-huh her maybe. I should leave. The time traveled to the professional start like disappearing Ono. The stamp program was covered with so much publicity and propaganda that the day the program launched lines to the nearest post office stretched around the block but immediately really that was like an iphone immediately. Sounds like an I own. A new iphone came out. Got Another screen on it. You waiting for the Stampe Stampe to immediately. I look stamp book. Is it worth it. MARQUESS brownies like flipping pages I kisses. It's Nice Book. Good Card stock Plenty of room for stance but as you can imagine there immediately. Some problems with the program German citizens were so poor at the time that five reichsmarks per week was just too much to afford. And if you missed a single weekly payment. The entire booklet was disqualified. So far what that's boy that's straight up that so the price was lowered to five reichsmarks per month which meant a family could earn their own Volkswagen in just sixteen years despite the obvious problems. Two hundred and fifty three thousand German citizens signed up before the war and another eighty. Three eight thousand. After the war started the program help stack a total of two hundred sixty three million reichsmarks straight into the strength through joy. Car Bank account by nine hundred thirty nine over twelve twelve million dollars was funnelled into testing of the Volkswagen. There's more adjustments testing and tweaking had to be done on this car than any other car in history. At this point there wasn't wasn't any extra bit of metal scene on the car. Everything in the Volkswagen served a function and I fought a flower hall. When the war finally came Porsche was shocked? He had not believed that war was even possible but only because he had been willfully oblivious of all the signs that Germany was preparing waiting for something big the area of the Volkswagen Factory town where Nazi officials were to live came with air raid reinforced. Basements as well as bunkers. His Volkswagen factories series floors and walls had been specifically reinforced with heavy concrete in order to withstand bombings. I mean at that point. Come on you're really turning a blind eye. Oh yeah like hey yeah. We got to like yelling. Cases Factory gets bombed. We gotTA reinforces. What do you mean is just in case Porsche wasn't wasn't the only one who is shocked? The factory never had a war plan and for the first year of war through nineteen forty more or less to sat idle. Porsche hoped that any day. Now the the war would end and the production of the People's car would finally begin. I just imagine him like in an empty office like spinning around in a chair. Like okay any day now. Only about thirty prototypes of his car had been built at this point and they were distributed primarily to Nazi officials for propaganda reasons even nineteen forty. Hitler's still gave the impression to Porsche. That the factory only serve one purpose to produce Volkswagen's Porsche was informed that the factory would never be used for the war effort and from that day on each time Nazi officials came knocking. Porsche would tell them to take it up with Hitler as slammed the door in our faces you know. It sounds like Hitler told Porsche. Russia wasn't going to happen but then why do you keep sending people. I don't know when it came to wartime production. Hitler's armament committees were only concerned with efficiency Porsche. And his factory factory They were not and that really pissed. The Minister of war production Albert.

"Socialist Party thing right. I think he's trying to pretend like it's for the people but it's really Kinda just for the war effort it's so people can say like. Hey look at all the great stuff. The government's done for us. It's just you know currying loyalty and then Stephen like a thing that I think you know Nazi apologists or like you know pretty racist ankles will say to this day. It's like well. I mean they built a lot of roads big talking point so I think you know it's one is the Mo like so they like you said they could move troops in missiles. And that's like the reason that the Nazis were so successful in those early attacks. It's so easy to like frame. Aim that as it's going to benefit everyone really like it's all about framing exactly. Yeah Hitler knew the benefit of the Volkswagen in an effort to make everyone one in the house. One of Volkswagen he even targeted children He would stock toy stores with model cars to help spark an early interest in automobiles from kids. Even insuring that there's a scale model of his own private limo for them to play with despite his lack of formal education. Hitler believed himself to be an expert. In the automotive field. He loved appropriating others idea as his own lake. Joseph Ganz's design and rarely accepted advice. Especially if the advice came from a non Aaron Person He always said there was only one way eight to make a proper Volkswagen quote. It should look like a beetle. You only have to observe nature to learn how to achieve streamlining most people suspected he just read that in some sort of magazine and memorized it. Either way the teardrop shape of the butyl was all the rage when it came to streamlining cars in the nineteen twenties and thirties. I mean if you look at cars of that age. They're like oh we can't have boxes on wheels anymore. It's like the sleek looks like airflows over it. My favorite thing to do right now. Not Not my favorite. This is the only thing I like to do is go on craigslist and type the maximum years like nineteen fifty and just find how many old cars are out there and it's like Super Fun. That's fun yeah. I like typing. Random things into craigslist flakes. Yesterday I searched street legal list it as being street legal unless it's barely. Yeah I love that yeah. That's amazing in May of nineteen thirty. Three Hitler promised one third of the newly allocated five hundred thousand reichsmarks racing budget. The two Porsche Muno. He had been admirers Porsche for a long time closely following Porsche in racing about a year later Porsche and Daimler dealership owner slash lashed friend of Hitler Jason Morely N- were invited to a private meeting with Hitler in an Upscale Hotel Berlin Hitler had caught wind portions desire. Yeah to create a new kind of car assessable to everyone he shared with Porsche. His desire for a four wheel drive thirty brake horsepower car powered by a three cylinder air cooled diesel engine. There's one limitation though that kept the people's car from reality for years it was the price Hitler clans. The average German citizen was incapable of saving more in One thousand marks about twenty five hundred dollars at the time so the price of the car could exceed that value Porsche agreed to the initial planning of the project in the coming days as he prepared a detailed plan that incorporated every design element. Hitler had asked for the document would later be known. As the expose. This contained the most accurate in precise rendering of Porsche's Volkswagen to that date Porsche wrote quote. In my opinion. A People's caught does not have to be a small cau- vs its dimensions. Power output vate in etc being reduced in the misdirected Mana adopted for previous efforts in this area for me a people's call must be full scale practical motto. That can stand comparison with any other intended for day to day use to. Oh great at people's car. I believe that the fundamental new approach has to be adopted. So that's just a long winded. Say Way of saying unlike. Let's try something new. Hey let's think out of the barn. It was that ah fundamental new thinking outside the Bun approach that would soon lead to the creation of the first beetle prototype. And that's we'll pick up next week in part two the Volkswagen Beetle. Much Fun stuff in this now is probably a lack of jokes. Probably jokes jokes per really low. Talley loved you. The VW Beetle: An Evil Origin Story
"Germany was looking for a true people's car literally translated as Volkswagen in one thousand nine hundred. Thirty one. One writer from DOS volks auto basically summed up the struggle for making people's those car perfectly quotes the van and be too heavy into expensive to produce the Hausa ill-suited in traffic an unstable in purpose but is needed is a car. Awed designed for the street offering maximum comfort but a minimum of luxury Ferdinand. Porsche realized this as well and at the age of fifty five decided to open a business himself an attempt to accomplish such a monumental task. He assembled a team of the best German. Speaking designers engineers an opened his own company in Stuttgart Germany while he didn't have much capital. He was globally known as an automotive genius so he was able to accomplish this with clouds alone own. GotTa have that clout. Yeah cloud is basically my number one currency. Yeah I think I can speak for everyone in this room. We wouldn't be where we are today without without our cloud for your appearance on two broke girls channel wouldn't exist. It does get a little though. 'cause I remember last week went to lunch and I covered you you and I was like hey. Can you hear me like thirteen dollars. Like I haven't paid for a meal since one thousand nine Hundred Ninety six on April Twenty Fifth Nineteen thirty one the company. I entered the official registry as the doctor Professor Porsche Company for the Assembly consultation and design of automobiles wheels and engines. We've wanted to call Dr Pepper but that's hardly taken. Ferdinand Porsche had made a name for himself in racing. The creation of a people's car was always a personal passion of his. It wasn't long until Porsche began drawing up designs for the first Volkswagen in nineteen thirty. He Won. He was commissioned by Private Motorcycle Company and began working on the project twelve motorcycle sales are going down and this company wanted to diversify hi there portfolio a little bit product. Twelve was the first project ever for Porsche. That was neither a small luxury wagon or a small racing car designs immediately we took on the familiar beetle-shaped and it was powered by five cylinder. One thousand. CC radial engine. That may twenty five horsepower. Radial engine like like like an airplane. Like an airplane yeah the first prototypes were road. Tested in nineteen thirty two. Despite the cars functionality the company that hired Porsche Chak cancelled the contract. As motorcycle. Sales had begin to pick up again in the entire endeavor just like they broke up with their long-term. Yeah way friend and Porsche was like finally you know we're going to get to be together and they're like. Oh Yeah Yeah. Yeah it's always been you then and turns out Dave's back. Oh cool no good for you guys so happy for you know all right so that whole thing was okay for Porsche the motorcycle manufacturer. Ns you another company immediately. swooped in to take their place at the time. Germany held the largest motorcycle market in the world but people wanted cars and Msu that they begin flirting with the idea of building true through automobiles it's crazy that Nebraska State University started out as a motorcycle manufacturer in Germany. It's incredible and then we can. It makes much more money in academia. This new project was dubbed project. Thirty two as it began in the year. Nineteen thirty two a pattern was beginning to form though and ns you started to stay purely in the motorcycle market and bailed on the project the factor. Ns you pulled out. Didn't hinder porsches spirits. It's though he seemed like a pretty a Kinda Guy Project thirty two had allowed him to alternate innovate his previous designs. Bring him one step closer to the future Volkswagen and he had been dreaming of and just a year and a half working for himself he already. He had already made more progress on designing his dream. People's car then he had made in the previous ten so overall he was pretty stoked meanwhile on February eleventh nineteen thirty three less than two weeks after coming to office Chancellor Adolf off Hitler did something no other German chancellor had ever done he attended the Berlin auto show. It was no accident that the theme of the show that year was the will to motorization cassation which now that read it aloud. Sounds very forboding and evil. Okay so Hitler had a plan quote. The motor vehicle has become come next to the airplane. One of humanity's most ingenious means of transportation the German nation can be proud and knowing is played a major part in the design and development of of this great instrument he immediately punctuated that remark by saying that Germany had fallen behind in the market. And now of course his time to fix it was actually at this auto show that one. Joseph Dan's appeared with his own prototype. Volkswagen the Standard Superior Ganz is especially unique in the story because his designs over the five years before the show helped influence both Ferdinand Porsche. And many others. With their attempted Volkswagen's Hitler himself expressed serious interest tryst in the prototype vehicle during the shell despite providing revolutionary designs contributed to all future. Volkswagen beetles just Ganz's name is almost completely absent from any history books. Due to his Jewish Heritage Ganz was arrested persecuted and forced to flee the country of Germany while his name was scrubbed from basically all records and was forbidden from being associated with the term Volkswagen altogether so porsche basically stole the design at the following auto show one year later. Hitler announced two major policies that would be enacted immediately. He called for the mass construction of roads and and highways as well as for car to be built that can finally be owned and driven by the common man quote. No country can be strong transportation as week to help push forward his dream of a mobilized Germany he promised tax relief for auto companies more money for racing more resources for motoring events less interference from state governments on the ownership ownership and production of cars. Course this was not just for the People's benefit but for militancy. Yes now this this is what kicked are like the. US's highway system into high gear to they're like. Oh we need to get you know missiles across the country chief we need to an arson. Attack on the Reichstag allowed Hitler to make a sweeping power grab. He officially made himself Germany's fuhrer he. Hurried hurried changes and transportation and pass the rash automotive law in the summer of nineteen thirty three removing German states of any responsibilities concerning the ownership and and production of automobiles and soon after the construction of the first autobahn began. So he's the site. I'm a dictator. Yeah Yeah it's like turns out. Yeah I'm king to again public support. The idea of national progress was tied directly to the innovation in transportation. It's hard to understand. Just how big the Autobahn project was. But the pure scale of road. Construction was unprecedented unprecedented at the time. Four thousand thirty four miles of road was planned for construction over the next seven years but like so many characteristics characteristics of the Nazi party it was the idea that mattered. Most the Nazi spoke with these roads. As M- court monuments in fact one announcement titled Not Roads But Works Works of art read quote. Nothing is to cramp or delay you in your swing from one horizon. To the other the highways will spark like stone an artfully rot. Ring ring the construction of these roads was essential for Nazis to gain the power. They wanted but they needed the public support behind. We'll be right back with more of this story. Okay but I learned from our sponsors. It should be obvious that the roads were really intended for an advantage during wartime but people were too busy Z.. To really think about that for a while Germany was actually looking really nice as long as he didn't look any deeper than the surface level. Surprisingly of all Hitler's rhetoric. The Volkswagen was the one that carmakers feared the most they all loved the idea of mass producing a car that literally everyone will want to buy or even better working with the governments to enforce the necessity to buy them after all who doesn't love being both supply and demand but they wanted the cars they mass-produced to be cheap like a three wheeled covered in motorcycle or something. Truly cheap manufacturers hated the idea of building a car just as good as the upper level cars for the price of an entry level car they wanted to make money and Hitler's Volkswagen plan left no room for people to even need to purchase high end models. Not only did they think selling a good car. So cheap was texting technologically logically impossible. They also feared the long term impact of direct government involvement in the automotive

"Visit the tomb of the old dictator Franco hills outside Madrid on you're reminded the arc of history is a bit longer than a ten year anniversary. He came to power is fascism flourished in the aftermath of the great depression of the nineteen thirties. Spain is still embroiled in a bitter row of whether his remains should be removed from the civil war monument where they're buried who is to say how long will be living with the fallout of the first crash the twenty first century. Kevin Connolly reporting from retreat. The VW beetle is an icon of the highway since it was first made in nineteen thirty eight over twenty one and a half million of the cars have been made. But next year Volkswagen will end its production to find out. Why only spoke to our correspondent in New York. Smear Hussein primarily it really just has to do with dollars and cents. You're right. This is an iconic car and it's been in production for three generations. But the reality is people haven't been buying them. If you look at sales for the VW beetle last year, they sold just upwards of fifteen thousand cars, but compare that with the seventeen million new car sales that we saw in the US in twenty seventeen. So really, it was a Donald dollars and sense game. But if you talk to the company about it what they also want to do is concentrate on different priorities and one, of course, is going to be the electric car market. And there's lots of talk about that in the US. And overseas, and that's something that they said that they want to concentrate their efforts on. So it sounds as though it's the consumers that are pushing this rather than the fact that VW wants to get rid of it completely and start afresh. It's very much a consumer driven reason for the lack of production. It's interesting that you mentioned that because in the press release the head of Volkswagen was asked whether or not we're going to see the beetle again. And he said, we'll look there are no immediate plans, but never say never because other Volkswagen iconic Volkswagen cars have come back, and namely, it would be the wagon most associated with hippies. Well, that is also making a comeback. So there are in fact, rumors amongst some car enthusiasts that believes that we might actually see the beetle comeback again in an electric car version. But that is absolutely nothing that the company is saying that is just pure speculation by people who really clearly loved the Beadle, and this was made in may. Mexico. Will there be any impact to the Mexican production or the number so small that it won't really be felt the numbers are very small end? This was also very well communicated. So it doesn't come as a complete surprise that the closing down the production of this particular car. It was said earlier this year. Right now, we're just getting a date attached to smear Hussein the anonymous street artist banks is famous for his distinctive style using stencils graffiti and political messages, but on everyone recognizes it as one of his earliest works as being partially destroyed by accident.
