Taliban silence Voice of America broadcasts in Afghanistan
"U.S. radio service, the Voice of America has said that the Taliban have banned their FM broadcasts in Afghanistan, the VOA said the Taliban had also banned radio free Europe, also known as radio liberty, from broadcasting in Afghanistan, both VOA and radio liberty are funded by the U.S. government, although they claim editorial independence. The Taliban said the radio services repeatedly contravene their new press laws, the Taliban took over Afghanistan in August 2021 as America and NATO were in the final weeks of their pullout from the country after 20 years of war. The Islamic group initially promised a more moderate rule but have since restricted many rights and freedoms and implemented their harsh interpretation of Islamic law. I'm Karen Chammas

I'd probably save it for college and donate a lot of it and buy a house probably. The Powerball is such a hot item that there's reports that some folks in the states that do not have a lottery are crossing the border into other states just to buy tickets. The odds of winning the top prize one in 292 million. There hasn't been a Powerball winner since early August. I'm Julie Ryan. A new RSV injection for newborns has been approved in Europe. Brad Siegel has more. The European Commission Friday says it's approved a new drug developed by Sanofi and AstraZeneca that Samantha protect babies from getting the respiratory virus, the drug is an antibody injection, given to infants less than a year old, to protect them against RSV before they get infected. The Shah must have to be approved in the United States earlier this week, doctor Anthony Fauci said hopefully we'll have a vaccine in this country in a year or two. I'm Brad Siegel. A Brooklyn Nets fan is a green with the 5 game suspension against star player Kyrie Irving. Lisa G reports. "So really powerful that one for people who aren't sure, and obviously endures this the text analyzer, which will pick up on stuff like that, but we're not being screen reader specific here. So should I carry on? Well, we've all got a few minutes left. Let me just bring in a couple of these. And I am going to get a little bit of voice-over specific here because I have to, I think voice source one of the least talked about ones when it comes to all these different commands. So let me bring in a couple. And it's just a few. Of course, if you're using it, you'll know that is control that is option, and that is what VOA's. That's the voice-over keys. If you want to do that, or you can change it. Yeah, absolutely, but control an option or your main view or keys. Hold that down, then hold down shift and then press F 11. If your function keys are set to be function keys, F one JF 12 and not the media keys or anything like that. Otherwise you'll have to hold down the function key as well. Press F 11, and that will turn on and off screen cuts, which on jaws you can nicely use. That's quite nice. I love screen curtains, my favorite feature of all. Although interestingly, if you do have it set to a certain resolution on screen, it will only show you a quarter of the screen in screen cut mode for some reason. I don't know why that is. Resolution specific. It is resolution specific, yes, you have to default make sure that's set to default otherwise it will work. The other one, just getting through quick settings like if you want to change your voice or change the rate or picture volume or anything like that. In a rotor, then you can do that with VO command shift and then right arrow or left out of. So that's voice-over the keyboard command shift control and option.

Fetterman's Ongoing and Very Painful Trainwreck
"Fetterman VOA's. This should not even be close. There should be a ten or 20 point race. A fetterman has no business being in this competitive race at all. Fetterman just started yelling randomly during the debate, play cut 77. I've talked to couples when I make their first down payment on a new house and they can't afford it anymore because of interest rates. I've talked to families. You want to cut social security. Mister fetterman, it's his term for his closing. It is just starts yelling, at least he remembered one of his lines. But one of the most revealing aspects of the debate last night, despite the lack of coherency, despite the fumbling of words, despite the obvious mental damage that has been done to John fetterman. And yes, I do believe that should be a disqualifier from being a United States senator. They say, you're an ableist. No, if you're not able to communicate and you're not able to process information, you shouldn't be a lawmaker. That's a very simple point. There are certain things of which you must be able to do the activity to be able to participate. For example, if you are a quadriplegic, you're not going to be a navy seal. That's not ableist. That's having a standard and a framework. You don't hate those people, but you have to have a standard. If you are not able to run or do what used to be this way, they relax the standards, the military fitness test, you can't be in the U.S. Military. We understand this in sports, we understand the military understand this in police at work. We understand this in firework. By the way, the same could be that you know what it's like saying, it's like saying, well, you should be allowed to be a lawyer without passing the bar. Well, no, you have to pass the bar.

"Well, tonight, Joe Biden is going to speak to you about your soul. If there's one man in American politics, who knows what your soul needs to heal. It is this geriatric daughter who can't speak two straight sentences that fumbling all over himself. A person who apparently believes that the half of the country that did not vote for him is akin to stochastic terrorists. According to Voice of America quote, in a prime time televised speech Thursday evening in Philadelphia, U.S. president Joe Biden is to speak about what White House officials characterize as a battle for the soul of the nation. Now, this is the same routine that he did during the campaign, which means he's still running against Donald Trump, right? During the 2020 campaign, the idea was he is about light and about unity and about friendship and about apple pie and Donald Trump is in E evil orange man. And in order to reclaim the soul of the nation, you have to elect him well, he got elected and apparently the soul of the nation is still broken because people are looking at him and saying you're a terrible president. But this means that he just needs to lecture use more about the soul of the nation because when I think about my moral exemplars, I think about career politicians who are venal and corrupt and bloviating and do really stupid things and abandon 38 million people to the predations of 8th century Barbarians and who promote transiting the children. Those are the people I think of as my moral exemplars when they lecture me about the healing of my soul and this whole of my nation. According to VOA, in the address outside, independence hall, where the country's Declaration of Independence was debated and adopted and the constitution was written by the founding fathers. The 46th United States president will discuss how our rights and freedoms are still under attack and who will make clear who is fighting for those rights fighting for those freedoms and fighting for our democracy, according to The White House. Now, first of all, there is something particularly galling about this president standing outside, independence hall, where the Declaration of Independence was debated and adopted in opposition to overweening centralized power. This president of the United States was radically expanded. The centralized power of the federal government up to and including the single largest executive order in terms of spending in the history of the United States half a $1 trillion simply on a political whim in order to prop up his political allies. This man standing outside the hall where the constitution was written a constitution that he does not seem to like very much because it provides constraints on the things that he wants to do a constitution. He believes should be replaced with a wide variety of regulatory clauses from a centralized administrative government, trumping the actual provisions of the constitution, but he's now going to pretend that he's on me speaking on behalf of the declaration and the constitution, which of course he is not. And he's going to make clear that he is on the side of the angels and his enemies are on the side of the Devils. According to VOA, Dartmouth Professor of government Brendan nyhan predicts Biden will use the speech to rally his party in advance of the midterm election that Democrats fear could go quite poorly for their side, but he's also calling for Americans to reject the anti democratic forces that have challenged the political system in this country. And this is the main message that you can expect from Joe Biden tonight. Everyone who voted for his opponent in 2020

"These in their blood tests. And so I can tell very quickly what's going on, for example, I had a friend who was struggling with acne and she's like 36 years old and she was a beautiful woman, but she's struggling and we sort of drilled down into it and she had high levels of these androgens that were coming from sort of this disorder. And so we cleaned up her diet and we started putting on herbs and we sort of shift everything. And her acne went away. Yeah, I would just say a personal testimony is that my wife, before she was my wife and we first met and we were dating, she would share that right before her period came, you know, she'd break out and it was very emotional for her because she felt like she always had great skin growing up. And then later on in life, things weren't the same way and she would feel so self conscious and like, why am I breaking out? Why is this happening? What's going on? And then as we started to learn more about blood sugar, which I knew a lot about it, but I wasn't using a continuous glucose monitor and when levels and Casey and everything approached us and we were trying it out, I had her try it and just by simply focusing on a diet that is in a good metabolic score that she had. She had a significant difference. She wasn't overweight. She wasn't overweight. But it still made a difference, right? Exactly, made a huge difference. And she had great skin when she was, you know, in her puberty years. And a lot of people who struggle with acne later on in adult life, maybe they also had acne when they were younger, but there were many people and especially women in my sort of anecdotal just looking around and asking around who for the first time started to get adult acne. And now they're very curious. And I think there was a lot more awareness around food sensitivities and like, is dairy and issue? Is this an issue as that? But there was less awareness about the blood sugar component. Yeah, yeah, for sure. And there's a lot of people that are drinking oat milk lattes and other stuff and having a lot of sugar bombs, even if they think that they eat really clean. And that has a significant impact on especially breaking out right before they get their period. A 100%, I think that's, I mean, for me, day one, the connection between insulin resistance and acne, I've known for 30 years. But it's not really permeated popular culture. It's a surprising how most people don't really get it. And it's the easiest thing you can do, just quit dairy and, you know, if you want to try sheep and goat, okay, but give yourself at least three or four weeks to clear out your system. And then you get off of all the stars and sugar for a while and see what happens for a couple of your woman for at least two or three cycles. And see what happens. Your body will tell you. I mean, it's the smartest doctor in the room. You don't have to worry. Hey everyone, it's doctor Mark Hyman. When I get dressed in the morning, I want to feel comfortable and ready for the whole day from my meditation and workout to grabbing lunch or going to a meeting, which is why I'm obsessed with Ori. They also have pockets, which is a huge bonus and makes it easier to listen to your favorite podcasts like this one. My team has also been telling me how much they love the women daily leggings made with your special wicking smoothing fabric. A few women on my team have even gotten multiple colors so they can wear them every day for yoga, cycling, running, and anything else. Aside from the fact that I love their products, I feel good supporting Maori because they believe an ethical manufacturing community initiatives and sustainability..

Trump Appointee, Michael Pack, Leaves Trail Of Shattered Careers At VOA
"Money wherever you listen to podcasts. There's been so much controversy. At the voice of america and its parent agency that it's easy to forget the human toll executives fired reporters investigated reputations shattered all part of an ideological civil war begun by former president trump's appointee to the agency. Npr's david folkenflik reports the us agency for global media overseas the voice of america and other federally funded international broadcasters. Last monday just two days before he resigned. Michael pack defended his record on fox news. I've been head of the agency for about seven months. And my only goal has been to get it to fulfil its legally mandated mission. Its charter which is present objective balanced comprehensive news. Tell america's story to the world others who worked under pack till npr a different story. It was actually one of the most surreal times of my career and federal government. That's dan handling a senior advisor to the ceo. When pack took office handling joined the trump white house team during the transition in two thousand sixteen and stayed throughout hanlin says he figured his loyalty to the administration would never be in doubt he was wrong. Pack decided almost immediately that hamlin and need weren't to be trusted and he banished them to the far corners of the agency. Headquarters found a foosball table. And since they weren't talking to us we would come in or nine o'clock and stamp out five o'clock and we play football day and we just sit there in common. About how absurd. This whole thing was hamlin's says it was a sign of worse to come. I don't think he had a plan other than to just blow the place up. Voice of america's top officials resigned. Pack fired the presidents of all the other networks back also suspended six top agency executives and paid private law firms millions of dollars to investigate them and the also refused to extend visas for any foreign employees implying they could be spies. Here's former general. Counsel david clergyman. He was among the executives suspended because he believed that we were disloyal to him. It perceived a us as being part of this cabal and it was. It was very troubling clicker. Men says pack embraced trump's fight against the media and against the professionalism of government employees one point even quoted leviticus to me some provisions at talked about bearing false witness clemson resigned in december after months in limbo. I think in audio was the sense of of of our own subjectivity. Were very much against the preface. The professional style of some of these slickly produced podcasts. That came later so the history of podcasting was not that podcasts. Were born born. Because it's never going to be ready for primetime and start primetime. The our goals. The goal to start should be to to start. We'll just look at community radio show or a college show. Most of the time we speak in grand generalities most of the time. I in a at a college radio station. Which is fundamentally volunteer driven and the programmers are volunteers and have a high degree or of say or ultimate degree of say over what their shows are like right they develop over time right and you know what they turn out to be a year or two in different than than what they start and but but because of the nature of of radio which requires There'd be something on every minute usually speaking you know say college stations going to be okay By the third week of the of the of the quarter of the semester. Everybody's in their spot and you're you got to be ready to go and there's no waiting around you. Just gotta do it. The time has to be filled. And if you agree to do it you do it and if you don't agree to do it while sorry next live radio do so. Yeah just do it and yeah. There's more room for over analysis when you're recording a podcast. Because you might stop start podcasting. Though i mean really grew out of that i will argue. That podcasting grew out of more of the live radio tradition then and then in the fully prerecorded scripted tradition right because folks who took too often were not had maybe some radio experience or contact with radio but often weren't really folks who who you would call radio professionals or had a lot of training and because of the low stakes rate because of the low cost of entry by and large compared to so many other media platforms..

"And and i found this even so i was invited to be part of this project. And and we've all collaborated on what it is becoming getting started was maybe the hardest part you know. What is it that we want to talk about. How are we going to structure it and you know. Are there other podcasts. Out there on this topic what can we. How are we different. I'm glad this you're thinking about it right because in particular is not even that you need to be different but it's sort of what are we contributing additional right. What is the route an echo chamber. I'm here's what is the topic jennifer. i don't think so. We are doing a podcast about the series twin peaks. Which which i mentioned to another friend that i was doing at twin peaks podcast and i was talking kind of for a while about it with her. Just generically and it wasn't until a few minutes that she realized i wasn't talking about the neighborhood in san francisco. Are you going about it episodically. Are you going about it thematically. So so one of the folks behind it has been re watching twin peaks every year every january for quite a long time fan and and a couple of his friends have been telling him. You know you really need to podcast about this. This seems like a great idea and and so so. Finally that has come to finally. It's happening and and there are a lot of podcasts out. There that are these rewatch tyra podcasts. Where people are watching episodes episode by episode analyze each one in sequence more or less. Yeah exactly and and so two. It's four of us. Two of us have not seen the new showtime series the new show or well. It's not new anymore but yeah latest film of twenty eighteen house on top ten list so good. I can't wait and a lot of people will like a normal podcast now friends so to so two of us have not seen the showtime series and the other. The other two have watched the original twin peaks and an series in the movies. They've watched everything sort of over and over and over again. How fun well yeah. Hopefully the these. These podcasts are transmitting to him through the ether somewhere. And he's catching up on. I would hope so he was. He was a reader radio survivor. "Turn of the century that even in community radio stations people were worried there were just too much discussion of it that it it it re you wrist folks it just becoming an insider's kind of ballgame right that it becoming all about us rather than providing that that lens you know and then that all of this yeah there's a difference between sort of airing dirty laundry versus reporting right and it's a ballots and i don't i won't hazard to offer any sort of guidance or say that there is what is what is the best practice rather than that it's a question that should be should be taken up and i wanted to say something you know specifically about voice of america right and because you started this conversation jennifer pointing out how the voice of america part of its know propaganda mission ostensibly because and that's many people dismissed voice of america especially folks who were on who are progressive in critical of of american foreign affairs as merely a propaganda arm right as as only the voice of american hegemony but that part of that mission even so was one to to promote a free press right to promote what what are thought of as a sort of american values around freedom of speech and that the boys american fact in many ways has affected that and that you could certainly criticize the coverage of the voice of america but that criticism often is is very similar to the criticism you would offer the american mainstream press in general you could offer you would level a lot of the same complaint about cnn or or new york times or npr jesse in times of american wars abroad like the the mainstream media. It's a terrible job of covering the news when when the united states goes to war. It's yeah and that's that's worth pointing out. When i hear when. I hear some of these tidbits from pompeo speech. You realize it could be a lot worse though you know is. He was criticizing voice of america for demeaning america. Right for merely critical right. That's the trump administration war on truth that we could. We could spend an hour and a half just scratching the surface. I want to take. This is is sort of noting that the voice of america you know is not only about news right. A lot of its mission has been has been cultural right and you can hear anecdotes and stories from folks who who lived.

"Tea leaves and realizing that he he's he's done better or search shelly say he survived better as a head of department of a bureau or commission under the trump administration than almost anyone else alleys ahead as we said at the beginning of the trump administration for years ago. On this podcast. Rg pie was going to be the republican nominee to head the fcc. If if if jeb bush was president he started was the next in line And so the it was just We wondered at the time if his behavior was changing to be more in line with donald trump his politics his policy outlook was always the more of the mainstream republican point of view. I wonder if before we move on to other topics. They on reiter survivor. You could let us know. Let the listeners know what else is happening in the year. Twenty twenty one at the fcc that we're going to be covering in episodes ahead. I mean net net neutrality is not going anywhere well i mean. It's hard for us to know. At this moment right i would suspect that net neutrality. you basically reinstating that neutrality. Reinstating open internet orders might be towards the top list of potential by nominee number of names have been floated but we do not know who that nominee will be to. Chair the fcc. But i think it's it's arguable. That will be towards the top. I think is well probably broadband specifically with regard to to broadband accessibility probably towards the top. There too. i think we can expect that equitable access to information equitable access to Basically digital equity to beat to be fairly high on the list of whomever is nominated and therefore on the table at the fcc. What still in the background. And i certainly can't say more about. I hope chris return beyond when we see more action is certainly all of the. Sec's ownership regulations are now in front of the supreme court after more than more than a decade closing in on twenty years of of recalcitrants in action across both democratic and republican administrations and so it will be interesting to see if the one continues to try to defend its record of an action or if it decides to step away from the supreme court but that those are things that still are in the offing..

"Eric. Hi i'm jennifer weights today. We thought we take a look a little bit at some new stories that we've covered in the recent past overplayed some updates. Actually it's good to kind of do some up on things that we talked about especially towards the end of two thousand and twenty as well We talk a little bit about. Maybe what we're excited about coming forward here in two thousand and twenty one in the world of audio in radio and podcasting but but the first thing is something. We talked about a lot with our friend professor. Christopher terry from the university of minnesota and it goes by the name section two thirty and i think many people now have heard about it on the news right and seen it discussed in in social media but in short This is a section in federal law apart. Actually what is called the communications decency act. I want to jump in before you even try to do hard work of explaining it and say it's a part of a policy that was set congress back when the internet was was equivalent to newspapers. It comes long before the age of social media or uploading videos or any of the things that we think of as the internet section to thirty was written by congress in the nineties and in nineteen ninety seven yes and it comes and it comes back now right to the top of of of mind because of all people president. Donald trump made it a giant issue. He tried to use it as a cudgel against big tech and it is important. Understand what it does right in order to understand why you used so much..
