Top Five Music Documentaries and Woodstock 99

"You like i are a connoisseur of music docks i imagine. How many do you think you've watched in your lifetime. Let's say let's try and put a number on this showy might be a hundred. Yeah that's that's aspirational. But i'd say anywhere seventy to a hundred feels like the sweet spot. I don't know what that says. If that's a good thing is that as good thing sean. It's chilling robbing. It's definitely yelling. It's concern you. And i've spent a lot a lot a lot of time in our lives. Digging it in your hand of music musicians musical genres the history of the form. The feuds the fights the love and it's an interesting kind of a subcategory. Why do you think music in particular has been so ripe for the documentary form especially nowadays. It feels like we're getting a new one every week including some that. The ringer ourselves are producing. It is true that the star documentary is a necessary function of a rollout. You know taylor swift if you count like a netflix concert movie. That she did. She's put out three movies like three feature length movies in like three or four years. It's just you have to do it now. You know you got the billy. Irish one It's lady gaga katy. Perry beyond says down a couple. It's just it's a natural part. I think it all goes back to two behind the music to vh one's behind the music arc the rise and fall arc like we love to watch rosters become rockstars. We loved a lot watch rockstars crash and burn you know and reliably. We get both ends of that in your typical rock documentary. Well let me psychoanalyze you a little bit. Why do we that. Why do we wanna see. These majestic figures of popular. Music hit their peaks and then crashed so painfully right. It's it's a celebrity worship thing. I think ultimately we love to build people up and we love to watch them break down if not break them down ourselves. We're sort of seeing this arc with britney spears right now which is a very moving target is a news story. But it's just

Are the Kansas City Chiefs Going To Land Julio Jones?

"Let's talk. julio jones my friend. Because i mean look it's a long shot i'm going to say it oddsmakers think it's a long shot. The chiefs are thirty. Three to one odds to land. Julio jones in a trade which is way longer odds than many many other teams. So las vegas does not think. Julio jones is going to land in kansas city but julio jones is gonna land somewhere and it sounds like it's not in philadelphia this year. Where are you at all this. I'll say this vegas didn't think phil mickelson was going to win this as last major. Guess what a that happened. So i don't know where julio jones is gonna land. I do think. Kansas city actually makes sense. I'm surprised vegas hasn't bumped it up a little bit as based on the past knowledge of how aggressive brett. Vh is the fact that julio jones said he wants to play for a winner he wants to play for a contender. You sit basically said give me the hell out of atlanta. You know If you wanna play for winter you wanna play for a contender. You wanna play for a good quarterback now you kate. A city checks all those boxes. You have a hall of fame coach. Andy reid i would. I would think that those numbers would be higher. What are your thoughts on this. Well let me kick it back to you with this. Albert breer reported today that basically that would probably take second round. Pick to get julio jones. Now that's it like. I think it sounds good on paper. Yeah i think it sounds good on paper to julio jones. i'm probably in the conservative camp of. I think the chiefs are already more loaded than any other team out there. They've already gotten their the last two years. I don't care what the bills in the browns have done. The chiefs are gonna make mincemeat of them. Whatever they play so. I don't know that we need julio jones so so you know to me. I'd rather keep that second round pick

Carrie Bernans Talks Connecting with Other Actors, Confronting Stereotypes Of Black Women

"I was like eh part of every church events. You their dance department. And their easter sunday plays and stuff so i would say that was. My first start was in the church and then the second star was like in the school theater. Plays and stuff like that and then after that After high school hosted the eight in college and disembowel in college. And then i got cast in a couple of community theatre plays and musicals although i don't really saying I guess that was good enough to make you know. I think i need to use voice training so that was like my initial start and i loved theater so much. 'cause you eat the same thing and then you just get better and better and better and and it just so much fun because you're playing with people on your living in this bigger than life imaginations and just like it was is bringing things to life so that was my initial start and then i m did Single ladies on vh. one with stacey dash. Lisa ray when i was in atlanta one summer in college as well and that was my first time on like actual tv set and then it kind of grew from there. You find the on camera just clicked with you more so than theater yet. It definitely i think. I mean the either clicks with me too. 'cause i think i am. I am very loud and just like very theatrical for only slightly dramatic. I wish you pump it up a little bit. Mccurry the pop up now. Tv was also just really funny. I was just like oh. My god is so cool but tv. I had to learn how to tone it down a bit be more. Quieter more intimate. Tv wasn't adjustment. But i did find light. Tv and film was much more fun for me and it moves a lot faster to them. Theater does Which i really love in a you can do more. And you can explore more and play with more carrots As i mentioned in part one it was. Actually the ceo of we audition. Darren darn borough. Who introduced me to carry. So i wanted to take a little time out to talk to carry about how she found out about. We audition what it's meant to her and how she uses this online community to further her own craft and career. yeah discover. We had nothing when they were really just the startup where they first came out. I think dare since they started. And i don't remember where exactly i was at. Maybe i saw something ally and i was like. Oh this is cool. And i got on. I started using it. And then i think darren reached out to me and then he started putting me as like a mvp and stuff like that's all became like more engaged with it. And i love we auditioned. I think it's it's definitely helped me a lot Because i would addition a whole lot in sometimes. My friends wasn't getting the same amount additions. I was getting so. I fell back accidents. To help me with an audition. They were not addition at the moment so it was great to go to this online resource to meet other actors to get their help with an audition and they had no tied to me. I guess you could say they just wanted to practice leading or scripture acting themselves and it just has been such a brilliant platform for media's in what are the ways besides just auditioning have you been able to use it. Yeah i've met with cast directors on there. They have these coffee. Our kind of sessions where you can meet casting actors for you know five to fifteen minute conversation. I've also met a couple writers on there. I also have used. It suggests like breaking down other stuff like that. I'm writing in having actors. Read it on their mind themselves like putting my stuff on there And i've also built some incredible friendships. I went to sundance last year. And i we auditioned co-sponsor to house so it allowed us premium access to like this really nice house and then a part of the package that we paid we also provided publicist which allowed us to get some more bits that we were doing and the friendships said i made within. The house was definitely like a big win. That i've now taken in so like twenty twenty one with me and i still talk with a lot of friends.

You may recall that Larry King, passing away it Anneli Hospital. Yes, there are complications from Cove. It He was, um Fox and friends. interview With June Ambrose

"Listen up. This is going to be such a fun. Episode of checking in with michelle williams. I've had a few moments with my guest. June ambrose as it relates to mental health and fashion and there was an episode that we filmed on his show she had on. Vh wild cod style. By june ambrose. I was so insecure. Because i was coming out of well. It'd been a few years. Since i was a solo artist. And no longer touring. They're singing with destiny's child. I was trying to find my style footing outside of the group. How was trying to refine. It actually couldn't refine it. Because i had to define it and june. Ambrose really really helped me with that. Will we found out that it was deeper than defining my fashion sense. We discovered so much fear in me of walking alone doing something by myself so she said to a place where it was a cia trap. He studio where i only thought that. If you're training for gymnastics or the circus that you should only be going to these types of places but going into that trap appease plays when you have to stand on the ledge. I literally burst out in tears. Because i had a revelation that i was scared to take the leap by myself. That was just a personal nugget. I'm just so thankful to june for helping me discover that once again at went beyond anything that she was going to put me in fashion wise. It went beyond anything that surge on the makeup artist was gonna do with my makeup. It went beyond any even. They dyed my hair but none of that mattered. If i was going to continue to walk around with so much fear hours just literally gonna look fierce and be fearful and wanna be fearful some just so thankful to june for helping me take that leap of faith. Now i want to welcome to my podcast. June ambrose and amazing style icon herself but she has made her clients to be celebrity style icons as well especially in the hip hop world for superstars like missy elliott and jay z. And so many more. She's also the creative director for the global brand puma. And when she's not on my podcast she's an n. b. man costume designer for some of the biggest music videos and tv shows. But let me tell you something. She's also just a fabulous friend wife and mother please welcome. I can call her my friend. Y'all please welcome june ambrose. How category. I absolutely absolutely. I really wanted to just speak on your joy. And also the psychology behind your styling. But as i was thinking of people to be on this podcast especially those that are walking their journey to have a better quality of mental health. As said june. Ambrose is always smiling. June ambrose is always full of joy and i was like i never see her in a bad mood and i just wanna know june. How do you keep your joy. It's really exhausting. To be sad it'd be sad instead of the other way around. Yeah like it's. I find that you know i. Smoke is joining that. Were on in life. The cycle we think it's as we're living but it's going very slow but it's actually going really. It's a short trip you know. We're lucky we get a hundred years. You know so. I tried to make everyday count. I try to even on my worst date on on our bed. Dang something happens that may be upsetting or disappointing. I know that it won't that you know there's always a tomorrow. Hopefully yeah if. I want there to be if there isn't gonna make this moment joyful. Yeah i just to tap. And i think since memories really help you to kind of stay happy you know when you tap back into those moments that joint like always tell people that hate taking photos if you feel awkward and uncomfortable in front of a camera tap into like sense memories and think about the feeling the emotion not about. What's in front of you but think about what's inside of you. You know that constant reminder that technique is something that takes practice so if you work on tapping into the joy. When you're in pain you'll be able to call on it even if it doesn't it doesn't sustain you for length of time. At least you know you have the ability to tap into a good feeling. You have that choice now. Some people struggle with not being able to tap into their joy. You know for for many reasons. But i recognize that is one of my superpower so i like to share it and it's just again. It's less exhausting. it's more fun being degi. Hear what she said. Did you get those nuggets. I mean because i feel like you were saying even if you are having a bad day you don't you're not gonna let it turn into your worst day and i also feel like if you're having a bad day some people will let everybody know around them that they're having a bad hair then you make everybody else have a bad day for michelle is kind of also you patient than than a man in space and i'm in creative space also working with celebrity talent and working with corporate big companies beauty brands in different scenarios and being on camera you after how to put that away and not bring that into the space right. So it's like you can't walk into a classroom day you know. You can't go on camera with a day. You have to find a way to pack away.

"September 19th. They just added some one of the lineup. Jack Bon Jovi is going to be a part of that lineup. Yeah, on DH. That'll be at 9 P.m. Eastern time. So There you go. Joe VH. Check it out, Young bonjovi. I want to ask you. This feeling got feel expected with his star legal expert. All those other things, whether reporters and everything, um But Pullman, Washington Which is a small town and it's just over the border from Idaho. Is now threatening to For people who were caught not wearing a mask outdoors to find them up to $5000 and put him in jail for a year. It seems pretty excessive does. How do you think that would play in a In a court. Well, in a way, I don't think that's gonna get us. Yeah, Now that I think fines will be something we'll see. But being arrested, throwing in jail thrown in jail, You'd have to really be a repeat offender and sticking it in people's faces for that, that Yeah, I'm making it known that you're like an anti Bhaskar essentially and like you're going around, spitting on people and stuff like that, But like There is. I wrote a story yesterday for a town in South Carolina. And they were considering making a misdemeanor up from a disservice civil infraction and, like the town's legal committee was like Not a good idea like to do that. And so you've seen. You can't even enforce that. I know and like that, and it's a problem they've had in another town, South Carolina, where they tried to you. They want to make it illegal and criminalize it. But they had no system of saying that you warn people because they weren't cheating track of the people they had already sighted. So I had to basically start over and then get people warning. Put in a computer system that you've been warned about it. And then they saw you again. Then they could arrest you and the town council was like this is just this is overreach. Problem with it is it brings permanency in my head to wearing a mask, and I don't want the thought of wearing a mask in society to be a permanent thought. Right? And it could be shouldn't be could be, But you know, and it's a great point. Because then what happens if the mask ordinances go away? And and if you're convicted under one of them for a crime, say, for example, then you would have the ability to go back and have taken off your record. That would be the logical remedy. Just like sometimes in Florida. We have of where you can't ever lost. Taking off the books. You already convicted of it. You can't retroactively go back and say that. Well, I should be, you know, let out of jail or prison or whatever time taking off my record. This is more of an ordinance situation, so it's really on the low level. Think there's on ly so long aware of mass to be considered a good American to fight my fellow Americans? And then at some point, I say, I'm sorry. I'm not. I can't do this for the rest of my life. We were joking about a guy in prison. What do you infer? I'm in For six months. I robbed a store and And shot somebody in the leg. What do you in for? I was caught not wearing a mask back for a year. Doesn't make me a bad person that I see a future where we're not wearing masks, and I don't want to wear a mask so you can see the future of us not wearing one out of don't think anybody wants to know where it feels like, man. I can't wait to get that mask on and I'm looking at flying somewhere. I'm trying to get my wife to set up a BIA to our flight to Cincinnati. But you have to where you gotta wear the mask the whole time. That's fine for now, But let's look two years from now, if we haven't figured this out two years from now, I'm sorry in my mind. I've given you enough time as as a good American to say. Let's figure this out. And after two years I'm not wearing a mask on the way. Even if they tell me I'm going to jail, Not doing it right now. I am a being respectful that time will elapse. At some point when you're around, he's early. Be aiding abetting. I'm not aiding and abetting, know, aiding and abetting. Just giving my opinion. I hate these damn things. He's going to go around. Start looking people. No, I will not do that. Maybe for different. There is a story about a guy. I mean, this is a couple of weeks ago in public's I went up and grabbed one. He didn't have a mask on or anything and kissed her and said, Hey, I've got covert 19 run Now. I arrested him now that well, that's battery would be worthy of being worth put in the slammer for a while. What was your first kiss like? No, I got it from a covert 19 gun. Yeah, I was like, Oh, God, It's just gross. Oh, our knowledge. I mean, am I alone here, you guys? No, no, no, no. I mean, I I think shortens all everything Ideo like I go to the store. Now it's like I wanted to be in and out as fast as possible because I don't want to be wearing a mask. I do it. I'm doing it to be respectful now, But at some point, I will have to say I've been respectful and I think we'll get to the point where it's not that way. I'm used to it. I just like Erin said. I don't like it. Yeah. The, um,.

Former Christian Music Singer John Steingard: I No Longer Believe in God

"It was the twentieth of May of this year. John Stein. Guard best known as the lead singer of the Christian band. Hawk. Nelson made a post on instagram. He said this is not a post I ever thought. I. Would. Right. But now I feel like I really need to. I've agonized over whether to say this publicly and if so, how to do it? But I now feel that it's less important how I do it and more important that I do it so here goes. After growing up in a Christian home and being pastor's kid playing and singing and a Christian band, and having the word Christian in front of most of the things in my life, I am now finding that I no longer believe in God. John. Stein. Guards post went viral and became part of a global conversation inside and outside of the contemporary. Christian. Music. Community. That I. say that fairly my friend. Yeah. Yeah. You came out they necessarily. I noticed you wording that carefully I like I didn't say eighth easiest. 'cause I don't know where you are. If somebody says, are you an atheist John? How do you respond to that? Right? Well, I mean at first I was like well, I don't. I don't know that I would call myself an atheist because I think at the at the beginning my understanding of the word atheist meant that someone who believed there was definitively God and I've learned since then you know correct me if this is not correct but. That my understanding now is that the word atheist. Who Lacks a belief in God? an and that is I guess a pool that I'm. At, the very least dipping my toe than. People. You. Know. We're all eager I mean. I'll admit to that first inclination to think, Oh, I. So want him to be in my camp, right? Sure. tribalist where like. Look now we've got somebody who can talk about the. The whole experience of the faith and Christian music. But he's now an atheist and I had that just sort of microseconds excitement before I paused and took some of my own advice and decided not to get hung up on the label. I'm more interested in your journey. Let's talk about hawk. Nelson a lot of people in my audience or just now being introduced to the band I. Sort of did some homework. You tell me how I do on this church, Canadian Christian Band Rock, and pop funk I understand that was sort of. Mitigated a little bit as you took over as lead singer, eight years ago is formed back in two thousand. Eight studio albums pretty impressive resume songs. including. Bring out was featured in a two thousand, five film called yours mine, and ours with Dennis Quaid and Rene Russo. The band I think had a cameo in that film. Right? You Guys Ron. How we actually got to be on set and in the movie voted favorite new artist, my CCA magazine in their reader's choice awards February two, thousand six. You've got some video time on vh one that same year you played, I love the names of these big Christian festivals like creation. Fast you know or when you guys did plenty of those winter jam host live concerts picked up a grammy nomination back in two thousand, eight, the original lead singer and Co founder Jason. Done left the band and twenty twelve replaced by. You John Stein? Garden. And I want to know about you, I, mean I was looking at your discography and you guys were like sold out all in pro Jesus Christian message had an L. type stuff, I? mean. About the band. Yeah. So I think we all grew up. In Christian and Christian environment in Christian culture in sort of towards the late nineties like right around the year two thousand. There was this where we're from in Ontario Canada. There was this. There was this whole vibrant community of like young musicians and people in bands, and so that was like a really normal part of our our culture and it was sort of very tied in with youth groups and churches and stuff like that And initially when we when we started taking the band separately seriously, I was the guitar player just for your audience for clarity. I was the guitar player before I was the singer. So when I became the singer in two, thousand twelve. Does not when I joined the band. I joined the band two, thousand four. but But yeah, early on very like pop punk, a sort of a music and. There was this thing going on in Christian culture at the time. where? Christians wanted sort of Christian versions of popular bands because there was this sort of like movement of like, don't listen to secular listen to Christian music. If you like blink one, eighty two, instead of listening to them, listen to Hawk Nelson like that kind of thing, and so I think early on in our career, we were a little bit more vaguely positive. and. We're just sort of a Christian alternative to bands like blink one, eighty, two or good Charlotte. Radio, we used to call him God or girlfriend song. If you guys did that you talk very guilty, definitely, very guilty of that because crossover I don't know that was a big term when you guys were playing. Christian broadcaster, the the Holy Grail was. Man of you could get this Christian Song on pop and rock radio like. Stream radio and it catches fire. You guys have those sorts of designs on the secular quote Unquote Secular, music? Industry. I mean honestly I think at the beginning, we are philosophy was very intentionally like We want to make music for anyone for for anyone anywhere like that was sort of our approach we. I. Don't think we ever thought like, oh. Let's trying go mainstream or let's try and go Christian like it was sort of like. We just want. We just wanted to play for. You know anyone who who cared. The record time certainly at some point to where the record companies like. Are. They trying to package you or so are initially, we were on this label called tooth and nail out of Seattle and and their their approach to that stuff is pretty hands off like. They were always known for being a a label that would sign bands that had Christians in it, but wasn't like overtly Christian that was sort of their their their their sweet spot and they. They were really like not pushing us to be one or the other

Nick Cannon out at Viacom, keeps deal with Fox

"I'm Kim, masters and this is the Hollywood breakdown joining me as my usual banter buddy on the business, Matt Bellamy and Matt this is very unfortunate situation that has developed There's a sort of a back and forth in the black media world, their business antisemitic incidents most recently I think is nick. Cannon was on a podcast, endorsed some clearly antisemitic views about Jews controlling the media, and whatever the these are old tropes. I have to say to her credit. jemele hill weighed in saying this kind of talk is unacceptable as did Kareem abdul-jabbar and a column in the Hollywood reporter, but this nick cannon incident he led to him, being fired by Viacom CBS a, he initially clapped back, and said you know. The CBS was treating him unfairly, and then seemed to have major change of heart and apologized and said he was gonNA learn, and he was sorry for the hurt he had inflicted, but. What's interesting to me? Is that while he fired? He had this show on vh. One called wild and out and other things going on CBS. He also is the host of the mass singer on Fox and you know. How surprised are you that Fox said that apology is completely acceptable. We're hanging with you on the mass singer. Yeah, I mean this really does point to an interesting dichotomy that's emerging especially when you look at a lot of the heightened sensitivity around these issues of hate, speech and inappropriate comments that have really come about over the past six to eight months. Fox seems to be an outlier here and a lot of people have put it in monthly. Yes, a lot of people have pointed to Fox News, which obviously is the home of many incendiary comments? Tucker Carlson was recently forced to go on one of those quote, unquote preplanned Fox News vacations when it was revealed that his lead writer was revealed to be posting anonymously on racist and homophobic and sexist websites. This is always been you know. The Fox News is separate from Fox Broadcasting Corporation which is run out of La. It's all owned by the Murdoch's, but Fox's always positioned itself as we have the LA operation. And then we have this Fox News thing, but here you have. Have a very specific incident on a Fox show with the host of not just a Fox show the most popular show on Fox and the Murdoch seemed to be okay with it. It sends a message that this isn't just Fox News separate from the La Company. This is all one company in the Murdoch's seemed to be endorsing a very tolerant. Shall we say view of this kind of speech? Yeah, the MURDOCHS ARE GONNA Murdoch. You know they they run the company. It's theirs and. Walk is possibly even more conservative than his father Rupert I'm not saying that a person can't apologize. Learn but I think when you make comments like this that nick cannon made. You. You don't just return with no without missing a beat. It's like okay, thanks. That's great. That just feels to me like it needs a little bit more of a pause. And why don't you go away for a little while and seek the truth and come back when you you feel that you know there's been a an interval I. Don't know if you reversed the situation and he were white host. Making these kinds of comments about say black people. That host would still have a job. That's an interesting question I. Don't know, but what is also interesting is just the state of the. The Fox company now because until last year Fox owned a movie Studio Television Studio a lot of businesses that have traditionally more liberal and more creative types in them. Now they've gotten rid of all that stuff to Disney and the Fox company is Basically Fox, news sports and the Fox Broadcasting Company, and it really has allowed them to be insulated from what's going on in the rest of media, which has been very attuned to these issues and very intolerant of this kind of hate speech. Fox's now kind of sewing its own path. Yes, now it's a little more obvious. Thank you, Matt! Belen former editorial director of the Hollywood. Iran In The News And On A Comedian's Mind

"Welcome to the frame. I'm John Horn. Yesterday morning. We began again looking for an Iranian American creative type. Who could talk about possessing that identity? During these ten times our news clerk Andrea Gutierrez suggested Azzaro newer bosh a comedian whose bicultural identity is a key part of her stand up Act Zara. I am a feminist Muslim iranian-american. The American comedian. It doesn't always go that way. When Zora took her seat in our studio yesterday afternoon she hadn't heard the news that Iran had just launched missiles at American targets in Iraq? While oh yeah I didn't check the news today And I actually haven't been looking at the news because when the first mention of war with Iran came up I just they couldn't handle the click bait flare of headlines about my family and their lives lives so I just had to turn it off and wait for news from family members. Told me a little bit about your family coming to the states during the revolution where you grew up I was born. In Sacramento of my birth certificate. Is Public Record. Go look it up. My nuclear family lives here. When the Iranian Revolution broke out we couldn't go back And were left in a position much like we are in right now wondering what's the come When can we go back one? We'll things chill out. When can we see my grandma? I aunts uncles cousins and here we are again. I only went to Iran when I was fourteen and there was this window of time where things look like. Maybe they're working out. There was a feminist inclined. Leader her And things looked like maybe it's changing and I got to meet my aunts and uncles and cousins and grandma for the first time and I didn't WanNa leave the it was my first experience of just unconditional love as a teenager in a Nirvana era and we came back home and my dad came into my room and he said Were Staying Watch. Vh One and a catch up because because up until that point I was raised as though we were going to go back because my parents want me to experience a culture shock if we you went back and when my parents decided that we were for sure staying I wasn't at home in any culture and VH1 did help a lot. So I studied theater like you did at UC Berkeley. I ended up doing public radio. You ended up doing comedy. Is there a natural path from cal to what you're doing today. Oh absolutely I studied theater I studied Meta theater. The contracts that create a theater around us places that we don't see theater that are like the news and I just released a report on. Stand up comedy and all the things that we find funny and why it's like a farm-to-table field guide on jokes. Wchs you could find a pop culture. Collaborative website pop co lab dot org slash. Funny is funny and yeah I mean I don't know what's is it like for you to. I feel like anybody who studied theater right now. must feel a little bit out of body because there or is such a theater to everything going on right now that everything is performance in a way. Yes yeah I think that's true. Let me ask you this. I I studied theater and I did as a final project in one class. I had to do stand up comedy I bombed. Do you remember the first time that you went out and did stand up. Was it an open mic. Oh my God. I'll never forget how I was at a place called the Brainwash Caffeine Seabra Cisco it was Like A hazing For All comics. I mean you had to go to the brainwashed. I think people still do and I met Ali Wong. She started the same night as me. Wait Alley was going the first night her own stand up the same notice you yup. That's good company. And she killed it. I totally only bombed and I just wanted to try it again. And that's when I knew I was a comic. I think that's when you know. Is You bomb. And you're like I really WanNa try that again. People always think comics are brave. And I'm like no we have a deluded sense of optimism we're talking with comedians are a nor bash. I WANNA play a little bit from standup piece that you've done. I Say I'm Iranian. People get scared by this. I like to have fun with it. I like to sit in the front row of nuclear physics classes. Excuse me professor this plutonium the crates. I WanNa ask you not so much about that joke but about your own identity and how it became part of your comedy was that always always us. You know it's funny when you played that joke because about two weeks ago a friend of mine was like. Isn't this kind of getting a little old. And here we are With the whole new sense of stakes Identity so very soon in my career as a stand up comedian. I realized that if I don't say who who I am and what I believe in at the top of my set. Everyone will wonder the whole time. I'm talking about farts and WCHS and poop jokes and so whether I wanted to or not I had to understand my political identity and yet you wrote in The New York Times a couple of years ago about how some of your humor was received and how you felt a part of that narrative and this is what you wrote i. I tried to humanize Muslim families with my one woman show. All Atheists are Muslim showing the story of moving in with my white atheist college boyfriend and telling my parents about the message. The audience was meant to be left with was that if total nonbelievers and Muslims can find common ground then everyone in between should be able to unsurprisingly. None of this worked. Yeah because what would end up happening is after shows people would come up to me and say well. You're one of the good Muslims and that it's is that confirmation bias just they would just take me and relegate me to the part of their brain that accepted people and go back to demonizing everyone else. Let's explain the good Muslim versus the bad Muslim. Because that's part of what you talk about. How would you define a no win situation? The the things that make you acceptable or like a friend to one community is what demonize you to another things that make it with one group of people break it with another. There's no winning and regardless your character is up for question it's a witch trial. So what do you say to yourself. What is my role as comic? Do I not worry about the outcomes. How do you process those guns reactions? You know the most powerful the thing that I've come to realize for me is that it's never up to any one individual. I think the most important thing that we as Americans need to know is that we are part collective that we need community. We need infrastructure that there is not one strategy that there's narrative strategy there's cultural change their policy change there's infrastructural change we need all of it and all of it needs to be doing the work and I don't think that it's right to put all all of that weight on any one person's shoulders we all have a role to play and we need to do the best job we've ever done ever this year. You have a great title senior fellow on comedy for Social Change With the pop culture collaborative. What is that? And how are you you finding allies in what it is you're trying to do. I find allies with people who have intersecting experiences With me I am. I am a bisexual

Does you had this original plan because you dont maybe Patrick Mahomes would need a year to develop you say, okay, twenty nineteen year. He didn't need that time. He's he's ready now. He's ready now to go for the Super Bowl. The NFL is such a different league that it was ten years ago. Listen to me when I say this when it comes to the chiefs offense, the chiefs have a world championship offense. That means that you should be going for it this year. The trading deadline is October thirtieth. I don't know what you have to do if the chiefs were making a move for Earl, Thomas reports came through that they were moving around money so that they could do that. You do everything in your power to surround this offense that just put forty points on Bill Bill checks team in Foxborough. You do. "All right let's do some ask atp let's start with an interesting kind of simulation or scenario is a better word for it from comedian james vh who wrote who wrote i'm placing all three of you in charge of security at apple putting to one side the leaky supply chain how are you going to work out how gherman and other people like him are getting his information and how are you gonna put it into it once and for all tim cook is relying on you guys casey you have just desk job again marco you have job and john very little changed for you you have an unlimited budget be reasonable with this john things to consider housed gherman getting stories is it just friends in high places or other more nefarious means remember those health out mockups why did gherman get those so wrong end case manufacturers got really wrong with the iphone nanno and the teardrop iphone james writes i've often wondered whether schematics for one or both of these products were disseminated in an attempt to root out the leakers and i find this fascinating so what would you do i think that last thing is the thing that i find most interesting in in most exciting is is deliberately telling people the wrong data just to see where it ends up another thing i would do is just figure out like what the cia and like f b i do in these sorts of scenarios like presumably there have been people in intelligence operations presumably that have tried to figure this out before you know what do they do how do they sniff out when there's a leak and how do they how do they figure that out additionally i mean i've heard it will we have heard as a community enough heard from friends that work it up all that disclosures a big thing like my understanding is there's actually an app or it's part of an app that that apple has where you can look up okay marco and i both work at apple i wanna talk to marco about project titan let me go look real quick and see if if marco is disclosed on project titan oh no he's not okay well marco let me just tell you what i'm working on these days something interesting and that's all i can tell you so compartmentalizing even more that's a roundabout way of saying apartment allies and even more is probably a good way to prevent the problem but in terms of sniffing it out that's a tough question and other than planting bogus data i'm not sure what to say marco how'd you handle it i mean there are certain things you can do to actually like you know track down and catch individual leakers you know i'm sure apples i mean we affect as none of the three of us have ever worked in this kind of field before of secrecy and security and stuff as far as i know so so i don't have well but like were you in charge of enforcing it and like tracking people down if we were we couldn't say but yeah so like you know these suggestions might be ridiculous you know compared to people who actually know what they're talking about in this area but with that disclaimer you know obviously one angle is to catch the people who are existing leaguers and you do that who knows one idea is what you mentioned like kennel fake leaks like just to to kind of find out like where things are leaking from like one one little idea i thought of which i'm sure they've thought of might even do is you know there's been a lot of leaking of memos recently what if every copy of an email memo that went out to everybody had software that that slightly varied some of the wording because you can do things that could try to embed like invisible unit code space characters and stuff like that but you know that's easy to filter out but like changes to the wording are not easy to detect if like you're like if you wanted to report on her quote a memo unless you have more than one copy then you can dip it and so i said that but like if you only got one copy then you know you can you could basically make enough minor worrying variations in it that you can kind of binary search down to whoever is doing leaking so that's part of a two but ultimately i think most of it's probably less on the technical side of more just on the human side you know we.

"By actually giving some love to van haidar instead of like having to end on the rather down note that i had at the end of the last segment or at least i thought i could bring things out by reiterating how much i genuinely enjoy van hagar in a way that isn't ironic isn't like i consider them guilty pleasure i don't listen to their music like all the time might tastes on a regular basis sometimes tend to include stuff that's a little lighter a little more folkard that sometimes like i just i have this hankering for destrade up shrieked ford rock in the vein of sammy hagar leading the spanned and i think there's no better way to do that than do an episode like this just to shine a quick late on a ban that you know like i said i don't think they get enough credit in the kind of annals of pop and rock culture history especially as we tend to take a look back with with you know countdown lists and television shows that do countdown lists youtube countdown list that would probably feel more comfortable crapping on a ban like this rather that actually praising them because i think everybody who's at you know watch mo jo or wherever really really wants to sit at the cool kids lunch table and not all the skit to sit at the cool kids lunch table in some of us just sit her own lunch table in listen to eight one two are songs off of for unlawful carnal knowledge and are like you know what i'm going to sit here and listen to you it when to you have fun listening to the black keys pretend they're led zeppelin anyway i'm gonna take us out and i think there's no better way to take us out than to play this song over the end credits which is a song that i also love from for unlawful carnal knowledge it is that album's clue.

"And yet the song is really simple when you think about it there's not much subtlety to it but let's face it this is van hagar one of the least subtle bands of this era and that's what makes it a great song such sincerity was definitely in early nineteen nineties trademark and not just for van hagar look at a number of acts moran this time and while you see humor from time to time you'll see a rejection of the general silliness and winking at the camera that categorized a lot of the glam e or rock of the late nineteen eighties and look i loved alternative in the early nineties i still love the early nineties and alternative music from the early nineties but man there were a lot of bands took themselves way too seriously van hagar didn't always or at least it didn't look like that it now fortunately what they had with for unlawful carnal knowledge didn't follow through to the next album or the next radio of anyway they did release a live album called live right here right now which has like one of the most nineties covers were van halen album ever it shows two houses one that had been destroyed by some sort of natch disaster but the other one that was the statue cheeses standing outside of it and then halen right here right now live whatever the title the was written typewriter font i mean it's it's very early nineties but the next studio album was nineteen ninetyfive balance and this is the final van hager album and if i'm being honest it's my least favorite of the four qualify that by saying it's not a terrible album but listed some song off of balanced the other night and and records kind of a mess and it has not aged well i mean granted that's the case for a lot of music from the mid to late nineteen nineties but what happens with balances that the ban doesn't exactly know what it wants to do with it self i guess the idea was to try to strike the balance between the hard rock and the soft of the band's music but.

"To this song at their prom back in nineteen eighty eight there's also some story about a waitress talking to a bartender they go back and forth flirt with him i guess that's the whole thing like how do i knew this is love honestly probably didn't even need that because all you notice throughout this entire video sammy hagar going full sammy hagar i mean he's jumping around he's he's having fun he's he singing like right at eddie and he smile in its would you watch footage of the band and you watch him and other stuff it's like no that's sammy being sammy so you kind of have to admire that all right silliness and snark about the song enter the video aside because honestly the video is just run of the mill late eighties rock video this is one of the van hagar songs that shouldn't work i'm honestly should work with the band like van halen i am but but because they're not supposed to be singing sappy songs about love i mean if that's your impression of what van halen should be but when it's love starts off with this really great keyboard part and what they pull off here is that when the qatar qixin that doesn't end up sounding out of place in fact this is a son that's layered enough to have a full sound that in the hands of someone like a peterson tara or a post sotero chicago would have been an nemec oh you wait one two was the first van hagar album i actually had because i borrowed my friend's copy and dubbed it using my parents stereo if ranking before van hagar studio albums i put it third with fifty one fifty second on the list topping that list would be the nineteen ninety one album for unlawful carnal knowledge or yes faulk which was a return to work at tar driven rock sound and which happened to be the album that was out when i got my very first cd player i'm sure the that particular bit of nostalgia where i would.

"As for the song i honestly think it's one of the most pure examples of the difference between original recipe van halen and van hagar while there are certainly songs in the van hagar catalog that could have possibly been sung by david lee roth and i think summer nights is one of those songs this one is pure hagar something sammy brings the ban when you listen to the music is this earnest sincerity and i don't mean that in the pejorative in fact that type of sincerity that he brings is hard to pull off without coming off as completely cheesy there are semi hagar songs that archie or they come pretty close to cheesy and era van hair hagar songs that toe the line but dreams which doesn't hide the fact that it's supposed to be the soaring anthem works on all levels even with the synthesizer which i think this album does have an overabundance of it points and while this is the fourth song of the album in the second single actually could serve as good opening track or at least a way to introduce the band's new sound now there are a number of other great songs on fifty one fifty i did play part of why can't this beloved toward the top of the show i played a clip of from summer nights and i would say that love walks in is another one that was released as a single but if i'm being honest it's so sin heavy heavy that i just don't really like it especially compared to the live version that primarily use piano instead on the band's nineteen ninetythree right here right now live double album.

"There's a lot of hearsay and conjecture considering the exact circumstances around hagar leaving the band but one of them is that he didn't wanna do agree style since tensions wordy high either quit or he was fired and it depends on who you talk to david lee roth was brought back to do some songs only one of which was actually completed and released it was called me my machine and the band did part ways with roth in nineties was about ninety six with van halen saying the reunion temporary roth disagreeing with that whether or not dave's behavior at the nineteen ninety six video music awards had anything to do with it is also a question that often gets asked when you talk about van halen in the mid nineteen ninety s especially because from there in the late nineteen ninety s van halewood actually have a third lead singer former extreme frontman gary sharon that lasted all of one album van halen three then they go on a reunion tour with hagar followed by a reunion with roth and he's considered currently fr man for the band but going all the way back to the eighties van hagar was around for eleven years from nineteen eighty five until nineteen ninety six which is pretty much the same amount of time that roth was in the band his first time around and in that time they released four studio albums so what i'm gonna do is go chronologically through this list and i like i said i picked five songs one from each of these four studio albums and then to from one of them and they are some of the band's biggest hits and i'm gonna do that specifically because i'm sure while there's other songs of the albums that better fans might put on their personal top five these are the ones that i remember the most i think they're representative in a way that deeper album cuts may not always be at least from the kind of perspective that i'm coming from anyway let's get to the songs starting with my first one which is off of nineteen eighty six fifty one fifty.

"So him in van halen it just again it was never odd to me in fact i knew some of sammy solo stuff i sale this to put aside any trip ation you had about my kind of polling little bit of a bait and switch with van halen van hagar i'm actually here to praise the band i'm not here to be snarky snotty asshole about them i have nothing against original recipe van halen by the way i enjoy it i have a copy of nineteen eightyfour and cd it's phenomenal album but you know sometimes i think van hagar does not really get the respect that they deserve and i'm sure that maybe twenty or twenty five years ago i might have had a stronger opinion about this but now school of you can let them both you want to so it's okay so i'm not gonna say what is better than the other plus i think when you listen to the van hager albums all four of them you honestly have some of the most consistent straight up rock of the late eighties and early nineteen ninety s i mean they're not nirvana and yeah they're kind of embodying what matt dillon's cliff termed the year and lifestyle music in singles but let's be honest that's what's advertised on the label i mean just listen to the opening riff of summer nights is this not the theme song to basically every wet t shirt contests that's been held for the last thirty years should i down my nose because sammy hagar is not singing about fighting against the oncoming political strife in recession of the late reagan era or how he's wrestling with his own inner demons.

"Anyway i remember going to the video store with them to rent some movies as you did and i remember seeing advertisements of for the new van halen album in the window of nearby record store that would have of course been the album eight one two which is the first van halen album i would actually own in a way more on that in a moment i also this memory of brian sister my cousin kelly going to see van halen that summer and in a very old entry on the blog i off handedly mentioned a t shirt that she owned that said van halen kicks eighty seven but while van halen kicks asked he sure does exist the ban never did tour nineteen eightyseven and they wouldn't hit the nasa coliseum until october twelfth of nineteen eightyeight and that was a wednesday i wouldn't have been off they did play at the coliseum in august of eighty six on the fifty one fifty tour and i think it's very possible that that's when she saw them and maybe what i had done in my head over time was merged those two summer visits to their house into one especially she did go see them in eighty six you know because i would have been nine years old and honestly i do remember the t shirt but was probably sophisticated that a bad word ats was on a tee shirt that might cousin owned i sort of filled in the rest of the story as the years went by by the time i started listening to music and van halen in earnest in the early nineteen nineties i was used to the idea that sammy hagar was the lead singer of inhale and and it was not a big deal i knew of the existence of david lee roth i knew of the existence daily roth as the lead singer van halen and i had heard some of his solo stuff because a few of my friends had the album skyscraper and that's the one with the just like paradise i remembered some of the things i learned about his tenure with the band as well but sammy hager had pretty much been one of those rock singers who was always around in my mind.

"My main phantom for the first couple years of high school bands like guns and roses and i also started what has become a permanent love of the band queen but among those bands that i started listening to in earnest during this i use of high school was van halen for unlawful carnal knowledge was among the first cds that i ever got an my knowledge of inhalant at the time though win a little further back than that in fact my knowledge of inhalant goes back to two particular years the first is nineteen eightyfour the second is nine hundred ninety eight in nineteen eightyfour the ban had one of the biggest sons david lee roth era and arguably one of the biggest songs of its career jump from the album nineteen eightyfour that got a lot of play on the radio as was one of the few songs that even at seven years old i recognize whenever it came on however i had no idea who inhale were as band or to be honest anything about rock or pop music beyond the theme to like ghostbusters and well whatever was on light of 'em and was soft tackler point but if we fast forward to late august and early september of eighty eight and that's time when i'm staying at my aunt marion's and staying with my cousin brian who's the same age as me we both had intended entertainment systems we spent what amounted to probably the better part of a weekend playing the game contra and trying to beat it without the cow nami code because we didn't know that such thing existed at that point.
