The next question we're all going to be watching for is whether or not Elon Musk is going to be able to make an argument that he can back out of this deal and not have to pay billions and billions of dollars in the process. "So it doesn't speak to kind of the really dramatic cultural shift in this country that the Democrats listening to this show and you and I obviously both know that if you were back in the Clinton Ross Perot George H. W. Bush debates right Back in the day And a moderator had asked the question mister Clinton governor Clinton Can you please tell us what a woman is You and I both know he probably would have laughed He probably would have said well that's absurd Is this a real they would have thought it was a setup Probably would have had a staff command and say this is some kind of a joke we're being set up I mean this is the kind of thing that was almost comical back in the day But now we've come to the point where this is an accepted mainstream thought on the left at a woman is whatever you think it is rather than it being an adult human female which is just common sense I mean is there any saving the party from this or they throw to the radical left and are they really finished that they've divorced from common sense I think the Democrat party is for sure I don't think there's any saving the Democrat party from this They are totally beholden to it It goes down It's just there's no severing the Democrat party from kind of the radical LGBT and transgender at all But the good news is that we can I think save the Democrat party forget about it We can save the country from it I think And that's not something that's going to be accomplished overnight and certainly not with one documentary but that's something that down the line long term I think we can It's a fight we can win because gender ideology is so absurd and most people recognize it on such an intuitive level that the real thing now is just to get people to the point where they're willing to question it because there's a lot of fear out there and I counted that too quite a bit when I'm talking to people on the street And so that's the hurdle we got to get over is the fear of asking these questions and opposing this

"But if foul play wasn't involved, then what was it? If the police know nothing, then who does? What about the people Ian was staying with? What do they know? And what do we know about them? Here's what Jamie had to say about them on the Reddit thread. At least one of them goes to school with Ian at VCU. I've never met them. We've tried to contact those people he was with. They've already left NYC without him, but they had a thick accent. We couldn't penetrate and we're very uncooperative. If I have the rest of my life to think about this, and it's a sure bet that I'm going to track them down and get a detailed account of anything he might have said before he left. But right now, I don't think they'll help me and I don't know how to make them help. Okay, so he says he tried to contact them, but it also sounds like he actually did contact them. What would their impenetrable accents and uncooperativeness? And I have a lot of questions about how this part went down. Isn't being very uncooperative sort of a red flag, someone calls you, tells you that their little brother is missing as in disappeared, desperately asks you the last person to see their little brother alive for help for anything you might know and you tell them nothing? Could they not find someone who spoke their language to maybe help with the language barrier? Also, there's no mention in any of the Reddit posts or news stories about this that the police even.

"In 1994, a ghastly discovery gave historical fuel to that fear. During construction for a medical school building at BCU, workers uncover the remains of about 50 people, mostly of African descent, and most likely enslaved people. These black bodies were stolen from their graves and used as cadavers for medical students in the mid 1800s. When the students were done eviscerating the bodies, the remains were thrown into nearby wells. Tell me a bit about knowing that history, because as you said, you had to go and learn that history. Now knowing that history, how does that change or inform the way that you do your outreach now? Well, one is great because it's not a shock factor anymore. So at first where I would engage individuals in different studies or even in some education, like I would go to some churches and educate. And they would bring up some things that occurred in Richmond or with VCU and I would sit there and be like in shock and yet I'm wearing a VCU shirt. You know, that's unacceptable. Obviously like VCU isn't alone in this, there has been a history of institutions who have mistreated. Black folk especially in this country has VCU taken steps towards acknowledging these faults in their past. Have they either done enough or what would that look like? What would atonement look like? So the first thing you said was acknowledge, which I have to say, you know, VCU definitely has acknowledged. What they've done. And you know there are lots of institutions there who can't even get that close. Like they know it and they are skirt around it, but it's like, no, just explicitly state this is what we did and this was wrong and this is what happened. The university set up a small exhibit to tell the story of the east Marshall street well. Four panels hang on a wall inside the building where they discovery was made. Each panel details a period in the history of the bodies. From the 1840s to present day. In the text, the school acknowledged their past mistakes, their insensitivity during the discovery and their plans to rebury the bodies. These are small steps towards repairing the institution's relationship with the black community. VCU has done a lot over the last. I guess almost 30 years now working with the community to figure out how to be addressed this. But, you know, that's just one story. That history, it. It stays with people. And it affects how they interact with the institution today. It's hard to forget that. The bones in the wells are limpets as they were called. They gave credence to many black folk in the community that their mistrust in VCU was not misplaced. But you don't always have to go back into history to find incidents that make people feel cautious or unsafe in hospitals. As a black woman, Anita has her own personal experiences with healthcare that leave her wary. I mean, I have a mistrust in the medical establishment and I'm a researcher. And part of mine is just of what I've seen, how I've seen providers treat my family members. My mother called me crying one day in the emergency room because something's wrong, like they're not listening to me, the doctor has not been in every time he comes in. He just leaves out. And so I had to drive two hours away to go to my mother's bedside and like I say for, you know, I use the term try to flex. Like, okay, hey, and then my mom's like, my daughter's a doctor, and I'm thinking, no, God, don't start. But it's sad that we have to do things like that to try to get quality care. And that's why I said, so I think there's still a lot more for us to try to understand with regard to where mistrust comes from in certain communities. And I think trying to understand that in the present day context to help us with regards to trying to eliminate it. It's hard to overstate the impact that centuries of unequal care and abuse can have on a community. A young lady, I worked with when I worked for the health system. Her mother worked up the street and she had a medical emergency, and she got a phone call, and I just remember her mother saying, make sure they don't bring me there. Now, mind you, she's literally like a couple blocks away from the health system. And yet she wanted to go somewhere that was probably about 15 to 20 minutes away. Because, you know, her mother had said, don't go there. And so these are very palpable real stories that you're hearing from people. People's perceptions of things. You got to remember people's perceptions of the reality. And that's the way it's going to play out. And so because that's what's been going through their family and their communities, then that's their lived experience. So as someone who's been in the community for 20 years, as you said, do you feel that you are kind of like the term we hear a lot of trusted messengers, people who, you know, have the trust of their community. Do you feel that's where you are right now? I do. I like to think so. I like the things so. That's an interesting question to ask somebody. I'm like, yeah, of course I am. No. I really do. Probably the last ten years or so, I've been very intentional about sharing messages about health in general. And so, you know, I do attend a very a nice size church within the city. And so I definitely do work there, and then through my church, I've had opportunities to do things with other churches. Anything from blood donation is sickle cell disease to just talking about cancer and prevention and health disparities. And so, you know, I've had opportunities for people reach out to me to ask me questions. What I think about this, you know, I have to constantly remind people that I'm not a physician. So I can't, you know, I can't diagnose you even though I guess I've become trusted for that even though I shouldn't be. Trusted messenger can be key figures in rebuilding trust. They often acknowledge that there are valid reasons that people would not trust medical systems. For many, the church is the essential trusted messenger. People don't walk around, you know, sort of saying, oh, I don't want to be healthy. Nobody does that, right?.

"Black and brown people we represent straight people we represent middle of America and to the coast. To me, I don't understand how people don't see how it's all connected. The way that our federation treated us with the dismissiveness and the lack of respect, rings true with Trump stalking your mom on the stage at a debate, which rings true with what he said about immigrants coming across the border, which is rings true with what Greg Abbott is doing in Texas right now attacking trans families and trans kids in particular. So to me, it's like the power structure wants everything to stay the same forever. And it just so happens almost everyone was cut out of the original design and the power structure and we're just supposed to find our way in there. I feel like whenever I'm sort of taking a stand with something, I never think of who I'm talking to, I think I'm who I'm talking with. And it's always way more than that one person. I mean, Trump, in particular, when he tweeted at me and tweeted at the team during the World Cup, it was obviously a page out of his old playbook, like go attack a powerful woman, hopefully throw her off her game, distraction, heap the whole of the troll world onto me and we'll just see how this person falls apart because it's difficult, but I always feel like there's so much more of us that there is a bem fighting for it. So that's kind of where I find my power and my strength in that, even though it is difficult to stare down your boss or stare down the president of the United States, unfortunate president, yeah. You like you shot for the for the moon and the sad thing is that like i literally got my acceptance letter and i think it was like two weeks later. I'm like i think i might be pregnant. I think that's great. It's so funny though. Because we're going to talk a little bit about that today. About how creativity ebbs and flows a little bit through pregnancy and early motherhood. Yeah and like. I don't know we can we. Can you finish your story though. Oh now then you had henry. Yeah then i had henry well like you know when i found out i was pregnant. I actually my husband was over the moon. But i cried because i'm like i can't go to art school now and you can totally go to art school. There's no reason why you can't go. And i went through for like the first semester and i remember being there and like you know you kind of get that feeling like this is not right like not like that it wasn't like wasn't cooling that i didn't learn a lot of stuff and i remember being like feeling like i know that if i do this i'm going to be like thirty thousand dollars in debt and i just had this feeling like man i i would hate to like in eighteen years. And i was heartbroken about it but Like my husband was always like this doesn't mean that you can't do art and if you change your mind like you can go back so was always encouraging about that. But i remember at the time just being like you know. I don't think this is the right time. So does yes. It is like an amazing amazing gift we got. "vcu" Discussed on Marketing Spark

"He's worked with many entrepreneurs who want to drive sales but struggle to make it happen. So i'm looking forward to her insight and expertise about startups success and revenue growth welcomed marketing spark april. Thank you so much for having me. I'm so excited. So let's get to the heart of the matter and the reality that for many companies especially startups is that marketing and sales operate in silos. And it's almost like they're opposing forces as opposed to teammates. So i wanna get your insight into why this happens like do these separate structures exist in one of the dangers for startups. That are looking to not only get product market adoption but actually drive sales at session. Interesting question and you're right. It is almost like age old wire marketing in sales fighting all of the time when they actually are the opposite sides of the same coin. Right you're looking to build a brand create loyalty among customers in get excited about what you're doing so that they'll buy it and so they should be working together. But i think that that misalignment is actually one of the top lay waste of resources within organizations especially when you look at small to mid sized businesses that are trying grow. Because if you if you create a symbiotic relationship between your marketing and sales so that they're working together them to not just bring really great inbound leads into your sales organization but also to support your sales organization to get those leads excited about what you're doing. Then you create a machine that just It starts to grow exponentially right you create these rating fans of what you're doing because you're able to get them excited and i've always said that sales is at type of marketing right lake. I mean if you think about what a sales team is supposed to do. They're supposed to go out and do do exactly what marketing does which is get people excited get people to buy into what it is the arandas enough that they open wallets. That's the same thing that that marketing does. So i've never really understood why they operate in silos by getting them to not do that is really really hard. I don't know that there are any great answers for it But i do think that there are. Some of the best organizations who've managed to solve this riddle are the ones who are growing really making the difference in their industry and one of the things that i've found is that there's a tension between marketing and sales especially within small organizations in. I don't know if that's because the founders slash entrepreneur starts with sales and then hires marketing or whether there's different ways that they have in terms of the way they operate or whether they're just not used to working cohesively is that in an ideal world as he said earlier marketing sales and sales as marketing and they should be moving forward and lockstep and there should be a lot of collaboration and a lot of ways that they can exchange ideas with that one plus equals three. But do you blame the entrepreneur for creating a landscape where there are silos as opposed to try to bring people together right away is at the entrepreneurs fault or is it just traditional ways of doing business. I think it's i I think that's how we define them right when you think about when when somebody thinks about marketing they think about brand right. Like i teach entrepreneurship at vcu here in virginia and when i asked about marketing a lot of the the students talk about your logo your tagline..

"Andrew. Thank you again for joining us on the show and sharing your story and you know some processes particularly Brazilian Jujitsu another stuff. We'll get into and just help another folks with your perspective to kind of make that progress of thank you. Thank you Kevin. I'm excited to be. I think that what you've done so far has been a really good and I think it's important to break down Particularly the process aspects. You don't really hear very much about that when you're listening to a podcast or learning about Things though the process part in particular is something. That really appeals to me especially as every business been involved with as grown over the years. Yet I for the impetus for this which is really I rebranded. I had another pockets called between the slides and then honestly the more folks. I talked to. What so if you're like when you have to explain it a lot you're let me make it more obvious. But it was largely focused on that for the world that I came from a public safety and incident management special events and then project management. It's super process heavy Sometimes too much sometimes informal and everything in between and in particular as you mentioned eighteen months in was still very new but totally getting into more of the the understanding of how incremental of process that is of like every little roll little thing. Little tweak little move and it's kind of mind blowing even from being so new of how much depth their is. They're part of an episode. Let me do kind of like a book. Report podcast version of of one variation and You know from grappling to the modern Brazilian Jujitsu and the seventy different variations. So I was very interested to see all those different flavors of history and people and you know cross discussions and things and So for you and I and I've looked up some your background and and heard some of this from when I listen to you on on dirty web. What radio which was cool so folks if you haven't listened to that check that out as well But your process in about you. Are you from the rich Mary? I know you've been there forbidden went to vcu. Are you originally from Richmond? Virginia No actually grew up in Columbia South Carolina so about Twenty five years ago. I just wanted sort of a change in a ended up in the Richmond area. Then it's funny I've been enrichment for A little over twenty five years now on. It's still doesn't really feel like I'm from here. You know there's no other place that has ever traveled to where I think it's quite So so Front and center. When you're if you didn't grow up in Richmond. You're not really from here. You know and it feels that way to me still like imposter syndrome or something. It even in the area. It's it's still it's shifted now. I grew up in Chesterfield South side. Now it's kind of the old old area and I remember just a richmond thing of someone at intern. I think I had when I worked for the state And she grew up in Henrico. Which is the place to be so to speak of and and just talking about. Oh you grew up in south side like it was such an old place and it was so different but the economy and the change and everything of all the different areas around Richmond Annex. Pretty NEAT but but yeah it's There's definitely a very kind of Richmond. If you're from there you're kind of all in as well One thing we do share Richmond wise as we both went to vcu I'm a back to school. Use My job building stuff and went to an for you starting That's where you got into judo first-rate. That's right yeah. I wrestled in high school I wasn't amazing but I got a lot better my senior year. I was actually starting to get pretty good but then I graduated high school in there. Just wasn't there wasn't wrestling at the college. I went to which was university South Carolina. Okay you believe it or not. There wasn't a wrestling team there at least in the nineteen nineties and I was really bummed because I sort of fall in love with grappling Wrestling you know Dan so I mean. I wrestled a little bit with the high school kids. After the season you know went to a few freestyle wrestling tournaments but I just wanted more wanted to keep going and there wasn't anything there and I think ironically there was a judo club. But I didn't think much about judo back then When I was in South Carolina and then I moved up to Richmond and in nineteen ninety seven. I started training judo at the judo club and at vcu and it was just. I was hooked right away. It was a special time for for martial arts special time for judo. Insofar as there was a lot of sort things that were coming together at the right place at the right time we know the UFC. We have to go back in time. You have been on on the air since nineteen ninety-three but nobody had seen it like literally. Probably fifty thousand people saw the I see in the There was another one eight months later or something and that's the sort of the way it was so is this sort of a niche underground to a degree but people that were involved with judo They knew about the UFC. They knew about Grappling they were reading. You know Martial arts magazines and stuff like that like black doll magazine was sort of the the leader back then if you were interested in even grappling. Because there wasn't there weren't industry specific magazines out there so I think that communities were a lot more interconnected. You had a lot more sort of a Geek condo type people involved with grappling people. You know judo injury. Jitsu were much more closely related than they sort of art today Which I mean as far as martial arts go. They're very very similar as far as like the way. The Arts are practiced in the culture. It's it's pretty different. Judo is a lot more formal. You just is very very laid back.
