"Val Demings on what still needs to happen following the January 6th insurrection. We, as a nation need to put more resource is into combating white supremacy, domestic terrorism and he crimes and tracking Hollywood and diversity on our weekly round table, sipping the political team. Tomorrow morning at nine on KCRW. Welcome to life examined on KCRW. I'm Jonathan Bastian. Throughout history. There have often been a group of people who believe that the end of the world as they know it is just around the corner. According to one survey conducted in 2020, nearly one in five Americans said they believed a global pandemic would be the most likely cause of an apocalypse. The same number of pointed to climate change and only slightly fewer, said a nuclear war It's no coincidence. Therefore, that apocalyptic fervor coincides with times of chaos and uncertainty but can preparing for an apocalypse provide a degree of comfort? And is America the natural home for today's modern day survivalist? In his latest book, called Notes From an Apocalypse, A Personal Journey to the End of the World and Back. Irish author Mark O'Connell explores the survivalist destinations around the globe. He also examines why people or preppers is they're called, feel the need to go to extreme lengths to get ready for the end of time. From luxury underground bunkers to garage a stuffed with canned goods, water and gasoline. O'Connell notes that this movement has as much to do with fantasy as it does with fear. Arc. O'Connell, Welcome to life examined. Well, thank you for having me. Let's talk a little bit about the history of survival is, um is this 1/20 century phenomenon or something that really goes far back into history? Survivalism per se is in the kinds of, I guess. Doomsday prepper kind of movements that I look at it in my book is I think very much. A kind of modern contemporary phenomenon, But you know, it has has its roots in, I guess cyclical kind of moments of apocalyptic fervor that have cropped up really throughout history. You know, it's been It's been something that tends to Rear, its head. The idea of the apocalypse that I think times of particular kind of social and political upheaval is when the idea of the apocalypse the mid to sort of Apocalyptic myths tend to be something that people kind of grab onto as a way of explaining, I suppose the sense of chaos and uncertainty around the future. Hmm? It almost seems like psychologically the human mind is drawn to this idea of end of times on bits, one kind of thematically that just plays out over and over again. Yeah. I mean, I guess you know, to put it in sort of sort of pop psychological terms. I guess we are creatures who thrive on bond move through the world via stories were kind of narratives. I telling creatures on day One of the things that the apocalypse does is, it creates a sense of narrative. The literary critic Franka Mode has an amazing book called a sense of an ending. He talks about the fact that we're born is, he says in the midst of things were born kind of invidious rest on. We have no sense of really where we came from where we're going. On. But the apocalypse does is that it allows us to kind of project ourselves into an end, so it gives a kind of a sense of narrative coherence to times of chaos and uncertainty. It's really interesting, and it also makes me think that we each perhaps like to think that we're living in the most radical of times or that this is the era in which it could happen. I think there's almost a nin Flay shin In the sense of self in time and culture, that that this is the moment because of course this is this is the time in which we're alive right that everything feels heightened because this is This is when this is when we're on this planet. Yeah, That's right. I mean, we kind of like to flatter ourselves. I suppose. By leaving that we're the ones who will witness the end. And it's you know, it's it's kind of an understandable psychological impulse in a way where the special ones where the chosen one to get to see how the whole thing kind of winds up So there's a kind of a narcissism to that. I suppose, in a way as you began this kind of grand exploration into Survivalism, um Did you find that in the US This was a particularly The feelings were fervent here that this is where a lot of the action was taking place. Yeah, for sure. I mean, so I started the book really looking at the sort of whole scene of doomsday preppers and people who were You know, digging book bunkers and stockpiling tinned goods. And, yeah, you know, talking about the the imminence of the end times, and that's a It's an international movement a lot of ways their preparation. In Ireland and in Britain and across Europe. But really the most kind of fervent and intense stuff tends to come kiss unsurprisingly. Out of the U. S. And there's I think a couple of reasons for that one of which is that America seems to me to be A country with a particularly kind of intense relationship historically and culturally, with the apocalypse. I mean America itself. The United States as a colonial enterprise was kind of born out of a moment of Apocalyptic fervor in in Europe with the pilgrims and so on. But there's something about the Prepper a movement and I'm right about this a little bit in the book. That sort of recapitulates thought sense of fervor of the first kind of European colonizers of America and the pilgrims, and so on a part of it, I think has to do With Um You know.

"Welcome to another edition of the business of Sports with Andrew. Grant this college sports edition all about the NCAA and the topic does your which is his name. Image and likeness and whether college athletes can profit off of that name image and likeness that they bring with them in have while they're participating sitting in cf Lennox. It's a big topic. It's gone a lot of ways I've had a previous podcast with Andy Schwartz an economist from cal Berkeley as well as Gabe ABC Feldman sports law scholar from two lane. We've talked about it at length. I've talked about at length but it was time to get the Yes to talk about it. That's Val Ackerman. And she is of course extremely impressive background working with the NBA working with the WNBA working with USA basketball. Maybe one of the most accomplished pushed women in all of the business of sports. Now Commissioner of the biggies conference which full disclosure I am part of in my work for Villanova Villanova Law More Sports Law program which I run for the past six years. I wanted to get val on talk about her. And her co author Gene Smith the Athletic Director at Ohio State in the recommendations to the NCAA Board of Governors and the three divisions on what they're going to do about this this issue were still in the formative stages but with litigation going still continuing from the abandoned case. Which I'll talk about in a minute and of course states jumping ping on some more aggressively than others California? I now hear about Florida Illinois. Another's wanted to have her talk about it here from the person responsible at at the top level for these recommendations so wanted to give you a little bit of setup again. What we're talking about here is is not the university paying so the fair pay to play act as it's named in California is really a misnomer? There's no pay to play. There's a pay to play lawsuit out there. Jeffrey Kessler the Allston case that case that issue is unresolved this is not that this is name image likeness profiting off your name image likeness so it has nothing to do with pay for play never in these recommendations as you'll hear from val is the issue the paper played discussed it's not even a thought by the NCAA. It's not even a thought by California by Illinois by Florida by these states contemplating eating something for college athletics so full disclosure. I am at Villanova. I've known val for a long time. And I know the Deputy Commissioner Vincent Castro the former aide did Villanova very well as well. But I think it's important to hear what they're talking about. There's a lot of information out there. There's a lot of misinformation misinformation out there about what athletes currently have a lot of people. Don't even know that student athletes at universities have NJ universities have have cost of attendance. Not All sports but the sports you would think of that require that and val talks about different numbers involved with this now in the billions being parceled out for cost of attendance as prescribed by the o'bannon case that I mentioned the sort of the start of this movement to have student athletes treated more equitably now again the NCAA invalid never going to get to pay for play at least not not any time soon. But they're talking about some changes and this is a move now. Maybe it's brought on by all the thought of exploitation tation which I think is an unfair word and all the thought of what's been going on but we have a move by the NCAA. It's not a move like California. It's not a move like like other states. It's not move that people think is enough some people but it is a move so I wanted to know where it's coming from. How are we going to deal with endorsements mint with players players coming in with value? How they leave with value the important words here as also kind of mentioned in the abandoned case are tethered to education? So I asked val about that is foul about the benefits that she contemplates in in in lieu of. You've kind of monetary compensation so they're just not there where there is other companies paying these athletes not the university eighty or some kind of third party. Trust that I've talked about where money comes in. The athlete only gets it upon separation from the university graduation or otherwise. But they don't really you know we're not there yet so I wanna be clear and I wanted to be clear in talking to Val Ackerman all about this so again..
