They've been up to their eyeballs debts. Sales have been plummeting for the last few years in a great consumer environment so blaming on Kobe. Nineteen is easy. You recently a piece on which retail chains hurting the most in reporting that out. What surprised you the most what what surprised me the most is. There are quite a few mall based retailers. That are doing very well. It's been easy when people say. Oh any store in a mall is GonNa hurt in fact to it really is basically the delineation is does. A company have products that people want that other retailers on offer. Does it have customer service at doesn't have a good friend of ECOMMERCE and store business and on those fronts? Jc Penney was not very good. But then you have somebody who lemon excellent on all three of those and they're driving Neiman. Marcus didn't count with that. I mean granted. It's obviously on the high luxury but neiman. Marcus didn't have that which is another company. That went bankrupt Neiman. Marcus we all think of it for its eight thousand dollar nine thousand dollar designer gowns but the reality is that a sold a lot of stuff that middle class upper middle class people would buy but they could also find Nordstrom bloomingdale's contract neuman. Marcus was not as special as it used to be. Forty four stores. That's a lot of source to fill with. You say that even when you look inside the mall that there are plenty of retailers that are doing okay because say differentiated product a good blend of online and physical retail that said in the age of Cova given it a lot of malls have been closed and still are closed. Are there a couple of retail? You're looking at is kind of the bellwethers in other words. The ones that we're doing okay. Pre Cova but if they either filed for bankruptcy or get close to that you suddenly say wait a minute. We don't just have struggling retailers like J. crew. Jc Penney going under. We've got a much much deeper. Systemic big problem. Well I wouldn't Nordstrom in there. I mean Nordstrom has been slightly limping. They're never been in mortal danger. They also a fantastic balance sheet but actually companies like Nordstrom Coles who've had their challenges but great balance sheets. They're not gonNA have great balance sheets coming out of this so that actually puts them in danger a bit further down the line. But you know company like Nordstrom which is extremely well-run which has great ecommerce which is Great. I struggled to win back customers. That could be a sign that this isn't just about pushing the weakest over the edge. Some strong people can follow her to wonder with something like Nordstrom which had a good blend of ECOMMERCE but in the physical store. The store itself stores like that. Particularly if you're talking about high enclosed this is a basic thing but a lot of it's about trying the thing on right try on the shirt. Try ON THE DRESS. And see how it fits. Is there any talk yet? On how they're going to pull that off in a covert age where I might not particularly want to put on something that somebody else might have just put on. Well there's going to be a lot of challenges. Would I mean basically the emerging best practice that we're starting to see stores? Reopen is if you try selling and a year stillness store and you don't want to try it on your order by it down and put it away for twenty four to forty eight hours. That'll be the same thing with return. Products Northwest Section in case today just announced that they're going to close fourteen per side of their stores. The big department stores not the Rock ones because they've been trying to do now is focus on better markets to them like Seattle New York L. A. And have a group of stores but also they started opening little stores called local which are half the size of a seven eleven in good neighborhoods. So you can go try things there. You ordered a line item gets shipped to that story. You go there and they try to get a Taylor but now so there are going to do as de emphasize smaller markets and focus on the big ones where they can win big L. A. New York Chicago send a major Boston. Retail sales. Numbers came out Friday showing retail sixteen point four percent drop in overall retail from this April over last April and that was obviously an enormous number. The biggest year to year drop ever but from my perspective is the layman looking at it I thought. Wow that's actually not. Nearly as bad as I thought it would be given the number of stores the number of malls that are literally closed right now. What were your thoughts when you saw that number because I thought it was going to be worse. It's mathematics because groceries. Rob A lot of essentials. Were up home furnishings up this week. We're GONNA see home depot and Lowe's are going to report. Apparently they did very well. But it's really a powerful that sell ninety percents and Powell is what shows the malls the small stores as well as the anchors. And so it really. Is Everybody gravitated towards the essentials like food and thanks for their home and things that were non essential basically collapsed? It's as if for some parts of retail. It might have been flat. Bid Up and others like down eighty percent. It really is entirely different worlds from a retail perspective. What is the longest lasting kind of behavioral consequences of Covet in terms retail? Is it more direct consumer or what in in three years four years from now? Do you expect to see in the retail market? You say it's because of what happened in early. Twenty twenty well. I think we're going to end up seeing a lot. More technology is GONNA be a part of. I need already as part of it but I think it's idea of consumer service at best. Buy Or to start right. Let's go to best buy now to get an employment and Roger hold chip in the story you can have somebody with you and I think some version of that will stick. Because I don't think we're going to have a vaccine anytime soon. Shoppers are going to be nervous unless you really really come to them. So safety and cleanliness are gonNA be paramount now. Does that mean increased employment. Pick a best. Buy Anyone who's ever been in a best buy in wanted to get help knows. It is a hard hard thing to do and you wait a very long time. Does that mean you're going to see some of these? Big Box. Retailers actually have to have more staff than they used to. They will have to bet you. They won't do it so I think part of this is at Downli we're GONNA see smaller stores and you're GonNa have a lot more ecommerce in the store will be two really close the transaction than browsing and get full service so I think a lot of physical retail will disappear because this is well the Wada a senior writer for Fortune magazine and the biggest Def Leppard Fan. Now it's time for my final two and I of his increased Democratic Party opposition to the possible merger between Uber and Grub the latest come from Minnesota Senator and possible veep stakes winner. Amy Klobuchar who on Sunday tweeted quote. If Uber takes over GRUB hub. It isn't good for competition and it isn't good for you. When big companies cornered the market it usually means more for them unless less for you especially in a pandemic. That's why I'm challenging. The trump antitrust enforcers to do something about it and so two things of note here I. There is not yet a deal to oppose the two sides remain apart. Price with GRUB rejecting at least one of Uber's offers second even if a deal does get announced cloture doesn't really have any way to fight it beyond public pressure. Even if she could convince Republican. Senator Mike Lee to hold hearings via the Senate Judiciary Committee's anti-trust Subcommittee. It couldn't actually block the deal. It needs doj the FTC. That's why she ended her plea for the trump antitrust enforcers to do something about it the bottom line until there is an actual transaction. This is all more about political posturing than policy-making and we will close one more antitrust note this morning the total lack of opposition political opposition to facebook's agreement to by giving the Animated Image Library that the social network values upwards of four hundred million dollars. Now you certainly could argue. There is no reason for antitrust to care about something as seemingly innocuous and silly as but that's also a lot of folks thought when facebook agreed to buy instagram more to the point big tech companies like facebook and Amazon and Google are all under current antitrust investigation but seem to basically be telling. "That's a lot of two hundred fifty. It's a IT'S A. It's most of the day out of your life. You get to two thousand eight hundred dollars. Just stunning I probably shouldn't tell these stories always on the air but it's my money in bed I didn't know and I was very grateful not to but but it it it it it stuns you into realizing what you're going to behalf to do where you even think it's a good deal like you know and by the way I had to do it cause carol you're right. She'd still be there I say doesn't Uber have that thing called surge pricing in the NFL. But it won't be that much. How do you know the whole point of Uber Is? It's not that much much. I duNno I duNno. I went to Clemson Florida state and right after the game to Uber Be. Actually the hotel was like two hundred dollars normally would have been around big games Bianca's just to get to the airport on Sunday morning at six in the morning. Nobody's on the road to hire a car to do that. In our cases maybe twenty minutes. Four hundred dollars suitable all weekend. Yeah hiring of the car is the Majesty's I call ice couching. Yeah this is you. Don't expect this from a big city. This is something to do in Louisville the day of the Kentucky Derby totally expect us a big geographic weekends. What happened in New York absolutely really absolutely you remember when the NBA All Star game was here? How the walls expense was? It was total gridlock. Have I told my NBA All star. We can Bentley Story. No several years ago took young Charlie up for rum. It was in New York all star weekend. Remember what hotel we stayed in but a lot of hotels often have fancy cars that they'll let guess us on available L. Basis to go ten blocks down the road wherever and whenever hotels was had a Bentley and because all star weekend everybody in town thinking about the kind of people show up roster weakened they all have their own bentleys and their own rolls royces so the Bentley was always available and Charlie Nice McIntyre weekend driving around in the Bentley. I've never been and the driver had nothing else to do. So he would take us this everywhere because he is supposed to be a ten block maximum or something like that but he had nothing else to do so we cruised around for three days. What is it like to ride Bentley? Lovely is it very big big. I remember being very big in leather. Smelled really nice and they had. I'm really nice. Glass bottles of water in the back. Which Turley was very impressed with that? It was nice. I didn't my ride. We didn't have any no mince now. I was really grateful. I was grateful to to get to control the music. Not just not I talked. "But I can't get myself to give two thousand eight hundred dollars for one day to go one hundred fifty miles but I can't. I cannot as they say. Wrap my arms around that and I said I'm not doing that and I even say something like if I may ten million dollars a ear. I would not do this so I went to a bunch of people who you know who were there around and I said I need a driver can we. I got an. I was in a car that day being driven that day on Friday to the set I told the driver. I said you do any freelance work. And he said I don't but I have have a friend I've offend will do it. He'll do it for free because he loves you show. I said don't do it for free anyway. That guy got back and that guy wanted nine hundred fifty dollars so that was not free nine fifty in what eventually happened was somebody said they would do it for seven hundred dollars. I was unbelievably grateful. Even though again I thought that was originally a lot far more than it would cost and he was his name was Marlin. He was great driver. He was a truck driver for a living he was everything. Could've asked for a very very grateful for this but twenty eight hundred dollars and again. ESPN should not pay for running that this is me. I'm on my own. I get that I. I know that stretch of highway. Yeah I think I would beat it I hate that. Stretch of highway wasn't hate it so I'd rather bike. I'm that's awful. Twenty eight hundred to play and then leave you too. Carol get down here on your own house has ever happened. She's still being Boca. But you could have taken a cab twenty minutes outside of Miami Beach and then been picked up there. You might not have had the super surcharge. Here's what I thought was a reasonable thing to do and I'll tell you why didn't WanNa do it. Take a cab to the airport in Miami and rent a car and I could've rented a car for two hundred dollars and that's a lot for one day. I could rent it on big car for two hundred dollars. The reason I didn't do that I didn't want to drop that. I didn't want to have to go drop that. I didn't want the headache of dropping the car off and I could not I asked around. Can I drop it off at any of the hotels no and that stretch of ninety five remember when we were in that fender bender. You don't WanNa be driving down there. Oh no I'm not exaggerating when I say people that were not knock on the road there on the gravel on the right going eighty. I cut you off. intermixed with that are the geriatrics. Datuk her going twenty miles an hour in the left Shawn Okay but next time so you have to reach when something like this happens. You've got to reach out to the family here because think if you could get more comfortable using your celebrity celebrity using your celebrity to make people happy and make money we could have gotten on twitter and in fifteen minutes turnouts video. "Some NCWA violations what do you think. I think there's shoes to be dropped here. This the guy's record is great. He's in the best football conference. He's one hundred fourteen and fifty seven. That's tremendous record. I know he wasn't good this year but he's won the big ten three times which means to win the big ten. You GotTa beat Ohio. State of Michigan Penn State. There's no there's no way around it. It's it's a fabulous record and he says has he's GonNa go to work still in the athletic department on some level and has nothing to do with this lawsuit. that he says is completely unfounded. But you just don't walk you. Just don't walk. I don't isn't Michigan. State still deeply troubled kind of yeah. Yeah I don't know what the I don't know that he had any particular. The Atlantic Department crept into football program at but not indictable. Tom Izzo didn't didn't walk. Tommaso still seems heroic in Michigan in State and was yelling at people who were going to the Internet to make fun of his players. And I let me just say I hope there's nothing more ranked but I will sit here here and say I'm not going to be surprised if something else comes out. Not In this case. Because he's too good agreed and when you get to early February and you say this is the time of year where you normally reset and examine. I'm in your your team. What it looks like going forward and you decide this is when it when it makes sense to walk away that might have held more water a couple of weeks ago I just I don't yeah I'm not buying and this? What else do you watch college basketball last night? Tuesday night for him. I watched a little bit of Maryland. A little bit of Duke Not much all right. We'll watch John Wick three. You'll get to John Three so I wanted. The score is apparently. That's what we do see you. MD holds on Number Nine Am d beats cores fifty-six they can win the national championship game. Maryland's there's nobody out there where you say they can't be true. There's no great team. I'm not saying there. I'm not saying they're a great team or will there good enough to know. I'm I'm saying it could fall to them. They have a repetitive pattern. In Games they fall behind much like the Kansas City chiefs and they win late and they do it all the time they could actually win and you and it's not because they're great it's at because there's no gray team. Well then imagine if this team came to play in March and maybe they had another match up with Duke Number Seven beating B. C. Sixty three fifty five missing at I thirty. Three's or something like that. They were down six for the first couple minutes. This is right before bedtime. So imagine me I grope in the DMV MVP. I'm not a huge Maryland Fan. But but I'm of a certain age I love. I Love Gary and I love those early two thousand teams and I'm as soon as you mentioned Marilyn Cohen. I'm thinking that AC Turner when they have the lead going to the final couple minutes and Gary will still take you second through sessions as he sees that loss. So we're walker time to go to bed An an aunt. Kate has taught him a phrase go. Duke he's walking upstairs. He Goes Mamma liked Duke. And I'm going this is this is nothing I ever expected to your own house. And he gets into bat the plays with his new boat. I WanNa go to duke tight. She's encoding him feelings. That have been. I don't know shoved down on for twenty years. That are coming out now. One more score for you you wanted to hear about Penn State Number Twenty minutes Michigan State seventy five seven hundred state sneaky good conference conference. That's really good. They have eight nine teams in a in a tournament. Yeah deals like you're not really going to know what's going on with college basketball till we get to conference tournaments and you see teams beginning into position themselves for the actual big tournament. Aren't you want to hear about macy's yes I. I saw this last night on the news. macy's closing twenty percent of their stores. One hundred and twenty-five macy's is the number one retailer in the country They're closing one hundred twenty five stores. They're getting out of the big malls because because You know because online shopping has become such a big deal that having these big stores doesn't work except for old people like me who like to go to big big stores and touch the merchandise. I don't like to order clothing. That I'm not touching I wanNA feel it. I want to try it on and stuff like that. macy's this twenty percent Santa Everything And they're GONNA go small. I we've had this discussion about Kodak and we've had it about sears and you know and all of these things that gene and and I grew up with that no longer exist I would have thought that macy's was utterly impregnable. I would've thought that you you you know they make money while the time not not me I mean. I haven't been in in a clothing store in ten years really only online. You won't if everything appears to be too big on me because it's too big on me because uh-huh by things that are two bigger than just keep them these cheesier so we don't want to buy anything that's too small because you know that's the other way. So what about if you have an important event. Let's say on a local college campus. Only April something. Yes something where you might be able to get a free the ride to it and it's a nice event and you'd want to wear dress to it. You'd want a new us to for example would address online. Yes for Michael Kornheiser's wedding right. I ordered address online. I wore that dress michaels leading an and was it too big to fit good. You technically to now fit perfectly. Will your some. You've probably never heard of. There's A. There's a brand called rent the runway where they'll send you three sizes and they say we know in a particular label. You might be up or down to size so here at men's sizes Calvin Klein Line over estimates and Brooks brothers gives you change Calvin. I'm a too you know so yeah see I find you. You mentioned those other iconic brands like Kodak or went down and and to me this more about An American an American way of life because it was going to the mall and I mean the numbers that they put in the species one in four for. US Malls will be closed by twenty twenty. Two what are they going to do with all that spinach. Gene and Predate Moss. Okay predate will. And then when malls came around and we said WHOA. What's this what is this now? Malls are gone out brave new world. You could eat it along the concept gene and I we we went to stores we went to stores and they were in the store chain stores. They were you know. Now you ever return to these to these storefronts but it's it's it's the hybrid of it's the direct to consumer online store that you go to touch and feel the product to then then Gordon you make the order online but I remember and client. We had the mayor of Gaithersburg on chatter on books because he runs the caves book festival. That and we the first thing we said is what's happening. Gaithersburg is bringing. I got this big mall. We got to figure out what to do with it because there are these huge spaces and they turned into ski awful Halloween pop up stores. And then that's it. Oh Gosh the theme stores all right right spirit. Those kinds of sorts of retirement homes just walking the food court looking for work out in in the morning and then go get food. And that's a really good idea. I mean for people like US malls coming in and looked with with wonder wonder at malls most disappeared. I'd live in a mall. Of course I would live in parking. Couldn't be more parking except except for the three weeks around Christmas. What else you WanNa get a little bit of? Mba is a little bit okay. We'll just start with this Genus Beats Zion. Jonah scores thirty four in the owns the bucks over the Pelicans and got twenty. Got Twenty wasn't very good sound three now But this is likable players. They both really John on his fourth straight game with thirty points bounds and five assists. He's a great player. And then Wilburn who wants to tout Damian Lillard who is not appointment dealing on any level nobody cares about Damian. Handler doesn't matter we scored forty eight points a game. The last six games he ended up last night. Eight of Twenty three and twenty one points. He's just another. He's very very good player. Who We've seen before we've not actually seen anyone like Zion Williamson before you can? It's possible we've not seen anyone like onto the combo before that's possible. So what else I give you one more story one more store so this comes to us from our very own Chris Liz. It's now accused busy with anything in the news yesterday so I get an email. That just goes Florida man. And I'll take you down to the Florida. Florida panhandle eating at Santa Rosa County. that's all the way west. Florida Florida highway patrol arrested. Two men suspected of drug trafficking after troops pulled him over over for just a speeding violation. Why they suspect them of drug trafficking? I don't know maybe because they had a bag labeled bag full of drugs in fact they weren't lying. The bag was indeed full of drugs that they posted on their social account. If you're trafficking drugs do not label it bag full of drugs and hand also. They were driving ninety five miles an hour which might be you know bad mistakes. Lord there are in this country a tremendous amount of rules which are aimed to protect individual rights and liberties which are in the main very very good and one of those is search and seizure. Sure you just. Can't you know if you pulled over for ex. You just can't go Y Z and do that but if you got a bag that's visible that's labeled bad full. Oh drugs yes I think the police say take a look at that for a second. They wanted to get caught. It was a cry for help. They wanted to get out of business. All right we will get out OUTTA here Old Guy Radio when we return we'll talk about the events of last night in both Iowa in Washington DC. And maybe. I'll tell a hotel story from Florida. "I just haven't gone it was there in two thousand four and then the next year he gets traded. Go right back to winning. Twenty five games against Jimmy Butler hated him personally. Hated hated eighty eight. It couldn't stand up the the whole situation. There was a mess. And you know all the things that were said about him and Andrew Wiggins when he went into practice and beat them with a third stringer and they went and talk to Rachel about how he's eat them all with a third stringer It's Kinda hard to argue with them when you look back on it given. What's happened since he left? That team has certainly not wanted anything other than what you were there in two decades one question. I'll get you out of here on this. Is there anything to be read into the fact the Knicks got rid of Steve Mills. Is that just. You know that doesn't really mean much or does it mean something. Oh it definitely makes something now in typical nick fashion They announced that Females is leaving and say he's going to be joining the board of some MSG related company so he hasn't really going anywhere chances. This is our. He'll be back running the theme again in twenty twenty five with the way James on seems to operate But definitely needs something. I mean people in New York. Is He bought the nickname. The Rangers in Nineteen Ninety beyond. I think the Rangers have been tencent. Winning percentage since two thousand They made a cup. Finals made a bunch of conference finals. You know didn't win a cop but we're good hockey without winning the Knicks. He just has a series of Bozo's team from Isaiah Thomas to Steve Mills Multiple Times. Phil Jackson come in the one thing. He's never done is go. Hire a basketball executive with a real pedigree through one the team and let them run the team if he did that. I think the Knicks would probably be pretty good. Even if he battled a little bit. You could you could ten on that one time. You could just plug in the word Redskins and plug in Dan Snyder Snyder and it is exactly the same thing. Exactly the same thing. You really is percents to same thing thousand percent the same thing not great. Thank you see if he gets to do good. Thank you now. You've been on that now. I know I'm right. Just you know. Die of a thousand cuts as hawks stink the terrible team and he'd never not make the playoffs for a couple of years and Robert Covington. Who now will I know? Wilpon will announce today at five o'clock that Robert Covington is the most important task which one one set of Kendrick Perkins. When nobody knows we is because Robert Covington goes to Houston Houston is doing something pretty interesting and Mike supports this Houston is getting rid of big people? HOUSTON IS GONNA put five guys on the floor. who were between six three and six seven? Mike believes Mike went on and on and on about wings. And how you need wings which led me to say. Yesterday you couldn't even get this many wings Popeye's which the crew laughed at allow which is a real big deal when you get had a good reaction from the crew. Three's a game which we have not seen before and we'll see if this works because they've got Westbrook they've got harden they got rid of a big man who didn't really slow them down but they added in Covington some a little bit faster and then you know other teams got involved Marginally Minnesota got draft choices which they can trade Denver got involved. I mean it was presented on sportscenter like this. was you know that somebody was just I. DuNno trading Lebron since week. Yeah Ed's who you think this week is slow my God when when is no games played because Adam silver said would you like to have. I don't know month off so you guys go to Europe. Would you like that. I'm happy that to Adam silver if I was an owner in the league. You'd really have to twist my arm to get me to believe that Adam silver was helping me. He is total players. Guy told him guy but in return for that of course he's gotten the players to not act in such a way that there's no controversy it's not the NFL NFL nets hernia. NBA's not you know so it's been different. Anyway that's the beginning of the show I just ranted. Because that's I- mookie Betts bets. He's a really hot about this Nigel. I'm sure that he's always young. That's why he may not come in tomorrow to one more question. Sure because again I just immediately go to conspiracy theory so getting rid of some of their best people. Does it have anything to do with troubles related to the cheating scandal and the investigation Well well there's been no indication that any pitchers are involved in in those things except to be maybe the they're not even the recipients of the news and David price is a pitcher David price is it just a real big contract and nobody really liked him. I mean In monkeys case the RED SOX didn't want to sign. They wouldn't give him what he wanted. Advice Harper that that you know that he he came up with an an unimaginable number hundred million. I'm the whole point. Was I want to go to free agency because it's better for the players union and as you know Sky I to Boris gone. Yeah so no. I don't think there's I don't think there's anything to that. It does look though to to to the outside of that point it does look like the red sox are turtles. Yeah and they don't want anybody to bother them and Sunday. Just going to eat this year and not can't be a great team but that affects that affects the balance of power in what is the most celebrated division because of the Red Sox and the Yankees Yankees the happiest people world these crews in ninety five. I can't even didn't trade. Let's into the League where he could beat them. They traded him to the other places. Like the what. Are you take solace in if your nets fan. That rendell left the league that you'll have to see them all the time. Some all right. Take a break When we come back Tim Bontemps will join us? I think he's been on the show before but he. He says he hasn't royal. What do I know? I'm Tony Kornheiser..

"This is General George Washington and you're listening to attorney already them. Have I mentioned in the three days that I'm back. How much enjoyed being back in doing this show and you would say well? Then why did you go to the Super Bowl and not do the show. Because I went to the super bowl to do something else and I didn't want to bring the whole show and then that would have caused much too much anxiety but I really am happy being available. Yeah no I understand. I don't mind flying. Thank you know I and I get all that all you would not. You would not have liked Miami beach. It's a very little thin strip of land that was overpopulated and mostly overpopulated with drunken people. People in various states of undress wouldn't have liked it. You reach an age where you don't like that. I look better draft genome McManus's here devouring Bethesda Bagel Sandwich. Keep attest to Bagel. Danny thank making jank happy about that Clark. Is here Michael Kornheiser. Claudia was done Yeoman work over the last three days as being booted out after today Nigel. Nigel runs back to reclaim his job knowing that we don't want him anymore but Nigel we'll be back and and everything is okay. I think we should change the locks on the doors to watch Nigel. Founding from the outside We will certainly at some point Get in the old guy segment. We'll get to our thoughts on the state of the Union in Iowa and all of those things that transpired fired last night. But we're not going to begin with that because this is nominally a sports show and we're going to begin with Something I don't WanNa say cataclysmic but something volcanic in in Major League Baseball mookie. Betts was a four-time all-star world champion and the MVP of the American league a couple years ago has been traded as this has been expected as for reasons unknown to me. The Red Sox one of the richest teams in all of sports decide. They're going to get under the luxury CAP and so they're not really going to compete. Need in the way that you expect the Red Sox to compete in the way that they have competed before they trade. mookie Betts to the Los Angeles dodgers that starts a sort of a chain reaction with the dodgers a small chain reaction. The dodgers then trade. John Peterson to the angels. And before I get into the Mookie Betts and let me just say this. I know that the angels never make the playoffs and I know that Mike I Trout is the best player in baseball says will. Why can't we see him in September and October September and October and because they don't make it but they are two three four five right right now it is? I think the best in baseball or it's got a shot to be the best in baseball in whatever you WANNA have it and trout often bats. Second you have trout Albert Pool Halls. He's not what he wasn't Saint Louis but he had twenty five home runs and ninety. RBI last year as good as he ever was. You Got Anthony Ren Dome and you got Jock. Jock doc. Peterson kills the ball is lefty kills the ball. This gives them. Righty lefty stuff in whatever order. They want to do it. And they're in a division where the Astros we you think I'm GonNa fall because of everything that's happened with the cheating scandal and their individual Texas which isn't very good and Seattle which is very good. Who else is in that division? Oakland is good but Oakland Glenn Sneaky. Good and Oakland doesn't have that kind of hitting like all of a sudden you look at the angels right either. The angels and you think that that's a contending team. They're sneaking up on everybody well at least spending a lot of at least as the other I two or three months go and make a big deal for a pitcher and July jock. Petersen can hit it okay he can hit it and he gets a stay get live in his own house. He just got traded twenty miles away and so let me get to the big news. The biggest news is murky bets going the dodgers and not just mu beds but David price dave price a former cy young award winner. Now I know a lot of people don't like David Price and they think he's a dog but he wasn't a dog in the postseason a couple of years ago and David price is reunited. What some people from the Tampa Bay organization who are now running the dodgers when he was at his best vanderbilt kid? He's he's a big time he was. It was a big time pitcher. Why the Red Sox do this? Because they've got so much money locked up into starting pitchers that they just didn't want to spend any more. This is their choice. I mean most people are saying in to answer the question. Why did they do it? They go we don't really know because they don't have to do it because they have money but they've done this. This is what it gives the dodgers. It gives the dodgers in most people's opinion. The second best player in baseball right under my trout. mookie Betts by the way it makes you know would trout and bets out there Erin and and it makes la probably the center of the late. Yeah makes at the center of the universe in in baseball as it is right now in pro basketball the center of the universe good because it's Los Angeles they don't give all that much they give up. Alex do goes very good everyday outfielder but they got everyday outfielders. They got WHO's The guy in center whose the whose? Mvp Oh I'm blanking right now. I can't. I'm thinking Red Sox. It's the red sox cars better Nardi and it's not not him but it's cody bellinger. Yes cody bellinger. He's an MVP They they bet and right they got cody. Bellinger got H. E. pollock. I mean they got the the dodgers problem problem was. It's an odd thing to say. They actually had too many good everyday players and a platoon to lot. And then then their manager didn't platoon in the playoffs and famously aimlessly ruined the play offs a couple of years ago but the dodgers are really really good. And by the way the Enfield Muncie and Turner they got guys who had thirty five forty homer. The Tigers are so loaded with Mukhi bets and if David price is a third starter the dodgers the dodgers the best team team in baseball. If it's on paper on paper and I understand that I understand that. So if you're nets fan you look at this and go last year take a small little Arrow in your thoughts. You know you've lost random which hurts you. You haven't gotten better stayed very good. You haven't gotten better at the moment moment unless you get Kris Bryant or something like that in a trade but you look at you look up at the braves. You're the braves are really good. You cannot put the braves and you look up at the dodgers at least in the National League. Now Yeah we take an Arrow in the CY. Look what the red sox taking the chest. Yeah they took a bunch of ours and test because they've given up to the Yankees now. They've given up their division to the Yankees or maybe even to Tampa they have fallen beyond and not only that spring training starts. I don't know five o'clock they don't have a manager our they go. WHO's the guy who says okay? Get on the bus guy. Who has the clip? They don't have a manager the Red Sox so I'm sure in Boston. This is an incredibly painful event. Even though it's been predicted for quite some time at least you trade him out out of the League you trade him to the National League and maybe that means something but this is a big deal with one exception. This is one year. mookie Betts going to be a free agent now. God knows the dodgers can pay. They can pay him when the year is up if they want to pay him if he works out and they WANNA pay him and he likes. I don't know where he's from. I don't know anything about mookie. Betts is he an east coast. Kid Can we look him up in some way. Just find out where he's from but you play for the dodgers as you are playing a Cirque in a circumstance where people really like baseball they go to games and the dodgers if you deliver a world series win win which they haven't had since Kerr Gibson deliver world series win. That is a really big deal so yes TORI has random question. I don't want just keep babbling. No It's good it's interesting. I know nothing nothing about this but I already have a conspiracy theory about why the Red Sox get rid of two players. We won't go there But you say dodgers had the number one the number two players in the country. Can they dug up. Handled to Elliot's does. La Does I'm sorry L. A. Can the dugout handle too. Big Egos there was no. There was nothing to indicate with the red sox. mookie okay. Bets was problematic. In fact he was beloved right. Do you agree with this analysis on anything of Saturday you want to do. I think you're missing one key ingredient which this comes down to the the cheating scandal and you look at. The decade was capped by heartbreak. Four dodgers to organizations into two cheaters to to cheaters. And this this is sort of a code to that as to what might look like for the next decade you. If you're mookie betts are coming from two of the best organizations in baseball's to what the fans are willing to give you and yeah what they sort of expect from you but how they their hand in hand with you so I fully expect if they go on having good season why would they'll give you fair market value. Now that's all. Oh you want You talk about what this means to be a nets fan I totally. I can't imagine what it's like to be coming out of the East which might be the most. I would say competitive. You've division in baseball but the big loser here is to be the braves. They win the division. Two years. Don't have any series wins to show for it and the path to the annals. Es in beyond his car's so much harder because the dodgers in a seven game series but to me. This is that weird. It's this weird final. Let's just move past this and hopefully lead. This is a are bad baseball saying to the dodgers and they could they could go on a tear The analyst has four good teams But the dodgers appear batty not the dodgers odds of winning the world series when dramatically down. I'm down being good. They went from like five to one two to three to one or two. I mean this is a big the big deal in baseball. I understand that we've been away from baseball for a while. It doesn't really come back until the season won't start until April next week. A big deal and Anouk from Tennessee Nashville Nashville okay. So then there's no particular legions east or west or anything like that so okay and maybe one. He's a really great player great player so you mentioned Chris Brian he and he and he loses his K so that means it's maybe more likely that you might see the braves phillies or nats. Try and push a deal. So now we'll bonds position is cubs. We don't have to do anything for a year. We am for two years so we don't have to do anything we can do. The whole year with Chris Bryan than trade him after that. And I said will you. You hit diminishing returns. I mean the important the most important thing in baseball when you acquire somebody is for how long for. How long do you have control of him? mookie Betts has only one year. mookie Betts may decide. You know what I'm angry at Boston. I'M GONNA go play for the Yankees. I don't know what he's going to in other trade news the NBA. And Tim Bontemps is going to be on later in the show. I'll just talk about that lady. Love to have a name like tell me good time The NBA does trade..

"The segment of the program is brought brought to you by the letter t which stands for trillions which is an amount in dollars that you have to use to describe the federal budget deficit the the Treasury Department said this week that for the first eleven months of this fiscal year that is from one October two thousand eighteen to thirty September two thousand nineteen the the government spent a trillion dollars more than it took in the last time the country saw this much annual red ink was two thousand twelve when the financial crisis and great recession were much bigger in the rear view mirror a time win. John has deficits made some sense now not quite as much sense as marketplace's Scott Tong reports from Washington. If if you look at chart of the federal budget deficit over the past decade it starts up over a trillion dollars in two thousand nine. It's way down in two thousand fifteen and comes back up shaped. Ah You as in uh-huh because most economists say that in an expanding economy like the one we have now the deficit is going the wrong way. Harvard budget scholar Collar Linda billeness what we should be doing at a time when the economy is doing reasonably well is to be paying down on our debts and reducing the deficit people in companies making good money should be paying lots and taxes but they're not she says because of the trump tax cuts two years ago. Oh and when twenty twelve a trillion dollar deficit made more sense argues Zach Molar at the third way think tank we clung out of the great recession and government spending naturally actually rose you have more people that are able to go onto food. Assistance and other anti-poverty programs plus a massive stimulus package pige and then on the tax side. If people make less money they pay less in taxes. That would likely happen again whenever the next recession hits hiking the deficit further north author trillion. Can it go up. Forever depends a lot of economics. His psychology economist Joe Minarik at the Conference Board's Committee on Economic Development says hitting a trillion dollars is an important milestone that will test Wall Street's reaction. If the financial markets begin to think there's a risk to the federal government being able to manage its debt bun and stock markets can be adversely affected as in higher borrowing rates slumping stocks and an economic slowdown. "All right so once again and as the John and I were saying American consumers thank you thank you thank you forget the tariffs and the trade war and global weakness American consumers are in it more solid indicators gators of that this morning retail sales four tenths percent in August way more than experts had been guessing and hot on the heels of a strong July to boot and the consumer sentiment survey. The University University of Michigan puts out his bounce back from a couple of down months and yet we keep getting reports that business investment is down in confidence among business owners owners and CEOS is down as well marketplace's Mitchell. Hartman explains why those two paths diverge in an economy at this point. It appears consumers. There's and businesses are on different pages. Consumers are in the mood to spend business leaders not so much to some extent. They're living in different worlds. Brad Odd McMillan at Commonwealth financial says businesses are worried about the global economy and the risk of recession. They have to hire people. The labor market is quite tight. They have to buy supplies. That's been complicated by the trade war so they're getting hit on a bunch of different fronts. He says consumers haven't seen much impact from the tariff so far what matters most to them. Am I working. Do I have a good job getting a raise so as far as the consumer is concerned. Everything is good but in the business world growth in capital spending has fallen by half. This year says Sam stovall. Let's see FRA Research. He says many CEOS are well aware this is the longest economic expansion in history or at least since eighteen fifty seven and sooner or later it will end up slowing or ending six in ten business decision makers think recession will hit in the next eighteen months according to a new survey from Grand Thornton analyst Chris Stevenson says there's a pause right now a pause to plan or potential recession consumer attitudes aren't anywhere near as pessimistic says Richard Richard Curtain who runs the consumer sentiment survey at the University of Michigan. They're not at a record peaks anymore but they're still very positive curtain says with the job market strong and wages rising consumers whose spending makes up two thirds of GDP are brushing off warning signs of coming Recession Ashen. I'm Mitchell Hartman for marketplace. Here's another entry on the list of how much longer can mall based retail hang on anyway stories. There are reports today that forever twenty one is going to close more than one hundred stores as part of a bankruptcy filing the aforementioned troubles that have befallen malls is partly to blame of course declining foot traffic but therein lies is the catch twenty two because when he wants reliable mall staple like forever twenty one closes there is even less traffic and meanwhile the classic anchors like JC Penney Sears and macy's or closing as well so what are shopping malls doing to get people in the door these days marketplace's. Amy Scott has that one traditional mall like the one in this commercial from the seventies often featured four anchor department stores that brought traffic to the rest of them. All the head company were the garden and the department stores either gone or barely hanging on mall operators have had to get creative Stephanie Sagansky with the International Council Council of Shopping Centers says sometimes that means dividing up the huge spaces left behind. There's a a mall in Short Hills New Jersey that did that it was a former saks fifth avenue avenue now has crate and barrel on the top floor and Indigo Bookstore on the bottom in other malls movie theaters restaurants even a go kart track have become. I'm the anchors and some are turning to non retail tenants. Tamas shore publishes the Directory of Major Malls anywhere from library space to two schools municipal offices senior centers Steve Johnson with the design and planning firm Gresham Smith helped the Vanderbilt University the city Medical Center move into a struggling mall in Nashville Tennessee and yes it has been very successful ten years later it is fully occupied and it is a very well used clinic now for the community and he says the remaining retailers are doing pretty well to consultant Jeff Jeff Green helps dying malls recruit new businesses like residential developments and hotels so though their life cycle as a mall may be challenged. The real estate that they're on is very valuable. It doesn't work for every mall though and with hundreds of retail stores closing he expects more malls will too. I'm Amy Scott for marketplace.

"But huge none of them went into the mall. And they started pulling the foot traffic from the mall. And then also on the malls in trouble in everybody's oh, this is such a shame. We should try to save our mall, and you start asking people. Well, once last time you went into the mall oak. Gotta haven't been there forever. Yeah. Well, then why are you trying to save it in some cell phone astrologer that it was so much better at the mall? Now it wasn't eighties. There was no big box retailers, and those a place to hang out for high schoolers, you know, we'd go out to the mall and do a little bit of shopping go to the food court hang out in the food court. You know, get a day. Queen shake or something orange Julius go into the arcade place when video games that you know, it was place to hang out well teenagers. Don't do it that way anymore. At least not in the smaller places. Maybe in the big malls. They still do that are doing. Well, if if you're if you're mall has an apple store, it's fine. Yeah. That's that's the rule of thumb. Yeah. I I. From from the shape. I had about three hours in the morning before I had two guns the F O from applying. And there was a big those the Florida Molin will end is the biggest one the one of the biggest malls in Florida is is that she right next. The apple like, so I went in there for a couple of hours gets on sweet. And pick up a couple of bits of pieces for the kids, and we'll have you. And that was so this is a this is a they morning. So it was pretty busy. And that was obviously throwing, but you know, is huge for a huge like Haitian. So it can probably survive, you know, losses a footfall little bit more because you still going to be is going to be offset by people coming for particular things. That's the thing right there. Think about when you were in that mall. How many people you saw with multiple bags from shopping? I bet you didn't see very many. Nope. So people are going to those buying stuff. Yeah. Yeah. Or if they. Obviously, they go for technical reasons to buy something. Right. They wouldn't have to get the new iphone? I think. Yeah. I think a lot of the time people go to those little places now because they just need to get something. They they either count. Doug wanna buy online, so clothing shoes? Clothes a lot of people. Wanna browse you want to you want to look you wanna try before you before you get on? And then places like the apple stores, the electronic souls, you want to interact with people, you know, if you if you're not sure what you want you want to interact with stuff to try and dishonor to buy. And of course, the other thing the apple stole that brings people in is the fact that people are getting service because genie smells have even. So that's bringing people in as well. And I'm amazed. When I go into the apple so how often people come with family members of the family members, just go and kinda hang out, and they might do the shopping something while one while one person is waiting in the genius bounce. If you saying exactly I've seen that a lot too. So all this. Brings us back to it's the holiday shopping season. There should be a jingle for that. It's a holiday shopping season. And I started thinking about the yesterday while I was taking a shower that you, and I should talk about this not that. I usually think about you when I'm naked in the shower, but you know..

"A gift card recently for for a shoe store, and I had to go to a mall to to get it and some all that's owned by Oxford properties. And I've talked to them they use an anonymous visual analytics as well. And I found myself standing in front of directory looking at this tiny little virtually hidden camera. And I put my hand over the. Information. I know thirty got my face. But I'm just putting my hand over the camera out of some sort of weird weird fightback of thing because it is kind of creepy because CCTV cameras, I know are there, and I know what they're used for. And I know that information's not being collected. But these ones here looking right at my face, it definitely creeps me out a bit. And the thing also on top of this is if this technology is combined with other technologies, it gets even creepy or you have GPS on your phone. Your phone is always tripping at little signals to try and connect to WI fi GPS always knows where you are. If that technology were ever combined with the Fisher recognition, they would know that I'm standing in front of the mall, and I clicked on the shoe store, and that could technically you the cell phone cra- cellphone wifi signal and see that I'm actually walking to the store. Did I go there did actually stand in front of the cashier where I presumably made a purchase one one privacy expert talked a talk to she went over. Yeah. They could have your face. Combine that with the phone at knows where you're walking combine that with the credit card statement the front it would know whether you made a purchase or not. And she looked at me. And she goes this is not some tin hat feary. This is possible now, and it could be happening. But no one knows if it's not because no one is open about what they're collecting and who they're sharing with that's disturbing. But I also wonder how many people cared that much, and I don't say that lightly because having this conversation it's clear that like it freaks enough people out there willing to complain to the privacy Commissioner and try to get things changed. But I think about all the ways to your point are earned for mation is already collected through your smartphone through your smart speaker through your smart, TV or whatever other devices, you have around in your GPS on your phone, and I feel like every once in a while we hear about some new way our data's being collected. And people talk about it for five minutes. And then we kind of assume that this is the price we pay for technology, and we go back to doing it. Anyway, like. I'm not sure that there would be a mass exodus of people using malls. I'm not sure there would be either. But that's just a I think people should have the choice to know that these things are being collected in any mall. The malls of chose not to share this information and the software companies have chosen not to share this information for a reason, I would maintain that it should be open and honest that make a choice if the mall as collecting your face, and you're looking using that to better their stores and better their outlook. Then you might want to go there if it were as you out and mobias, we don't do any of this. You might be more like them all, but the idea is at least, you know, what is happening to you and your most private data, which is your face. And even if you say, I don't care the second that heaven forbid, someone steals, your identity and your face all of a sudden, you care, very, very deeply as rare as that may be if it happens to you, or if you know someone who's had it happened to them, you will know that it turns into a long long tunnel of trying to prove who you are and dealing with all the payment costs and. What you purchase what you didn't purchase. It's a massive pain. So you don't care now. If you're one of the people who has their face, essentially, stolen and used for passwords or for shopping on other countries or other malls or online, then you start carrying pretty quickly. Aaron Hutchings of Maclean's. You know, he'll be back. That was the big story. Brought to you by Scotiabank..
