Zion Williamson, Lonzo Ball, Pelicans Hold off Donovan Mitchell, Jazz for Win
"We are back on. Get up and jay. Williams made his way to take a look at the game of the night last night. A good one between the jazz. And the pelicans and this one was all about ziad. Look at him. Going right equity go back just constantly challenging rudy gobert. He gets his shot blocked more than any other player in the league. But it doesn't matter because it's going to finish at the rim. He had fifteen points in the third quarter. Zion did look at them continuing here and just taking a straw once again. He loves eternal right shoulder. That's his patented move. Twenty-six ten last night for zion who was really emerging clear in his second season. Well let's take you to where this game is decided thirty seconds ago jazz are down by one. And here's the big sequence. J. will often miss from donovan mitchell. Donovan mitchell mrs baruch. I don't know if i call that over to bat call rudy gobert. That just much taller. But since i did it take another look at it here. That's go bear. He does get called for over the bag. Zion would make too so the pelicans of a three point lead in. Here's the final shot. Not a great look that the utah jazz get off. Zion gets the rebound josh. Hart gets uncontested dunk. And that is all she wrote. The pelicans get the win. One twenty nine one twenty four and again as i on finishing with twenty six points. Ten boards five assists. Joining anthony davis as the only players in new orleans history with game with those numbers before turning twenty one years old. They will play again tomorrow night

Sportswriter Zach Lowe on NBA Mid-Season Leaders
"Where. We are at the midway point of the nba season. And that means. I have questions for you about the utah jazz. I say the utah jazz to you. Right now what comes to mind a whole lot of threes there making these every time you know checkup jazz box score at my brain just glances over twenty two thousand from three leg. It's just nothing there number two in defense in number three or something in offense. They do profile as championship contender. Like they're the best team in the league by record right now. Are they the best team in the league to you. While the comparison that that's become sort of commonplaces they're they're the new sixty win hawks. The team that was built to win a lot of games regular season pretty ball movement side to side movement. You don't really have the star power to compete against lebron james when it comes down to it in the playoffs but i don't think they're just sort of blake a regular season flute so the way the jazz are playing right now. It reminds me not just of the hawks as you said but also a kind of mutant version of the houston rockets simply because of the sheer volume of threes. Does that comparison sounded all right and also does that comparison than invite the questions about what happens in the postseason. If shooting a bunch of threes doesn't go as well as it did in the regular season. That comparison does not ring true to me honestly just stylistically. They're so different. The volume of threes is similar. Like they are taking a houston. Daryl morey level volume of threes. But they play so differently. The other comparison is brad stevens. I think the first one to give voice to this is to two thousand fourteen spurs which is kind of like. That's that's i don't want to say that out loud well to an mba hipster fan to an emmy afficionados. Let's put it that way kinda sewer. What does that specific spurs team. What does that evoke in your memory. It almost has this sort of religion. Level reverend yes. Everybody loved watching that team. Anybody who was at games three to five of the finals that year when by the beginning of game four we were all looking at each other. Like all my god. They're just going to destroy the heat and to compare any team to where that team reached. It just feels like talking to a pitcher in the seventh inning of a no hitter. Something like you just don't want to say out loud but that is a comparison. People are making looked at jazz. Their undoing in the playoffs in in previous seasons was day would very much like the hawks. Actually day would get a lot of open threes and not make them and you could look at that and say well. We did everything right. We just didn't make shots. Which is what. Every hawks team including that one said after the playoffs. And so yeah. The three point volume is similar to the rockets. And that's a little scary. The team that this discussion has occurred in the context of is the lakers. As you said as it must be the defending champions and so when you look at the lakers right now. I want to get to lebron specifically in a second but just them without anthony davis and how much they've struggled most recently losing to these jazz and blow out. What is that revealing to you or confirming to you about what this team needs to actually content. I think like any team. They need their best players to be healthy. I i'm pretty low on the lakers panic meter because it's not just anthony. Davis who you know was first team all nba hill assures. Anthony davis is not like some borderline all the best players in the league. Dennis schreuder is maybe their third best player. I think kyle kuzma is kind of the claim that mantle disturbing might be their third most important player. Because he's the only other guy. With the exception of some frisky alex russo games entail. Norton tucker will get you some. You know some stuff done now and then but he's learned other on ball creator the other the other guys threat to score or pass to somebody else. Yeah you take them away and it's like oh my god. Lebron has to do everything and and you know he's probably getting a little tired and even though he'll never say it the only thing that will make my panic meter go above like three point. Five on a one to ten is if we get news. At davis's injury is lingering or more serious that we thought it was then if they're healthy in the playoffs yeah. Competition in the west is is probably better this year. Particularly if denver finds whatever gear they had going in the bubble. There's going to be a lot of really good teams in the west. You could get the one seed in the west and play the warriors. You could get to play the mad. I mean it's it's just every round is hard there. But yeah i i can't i can't get too worked up about it right now. Yeah the western conference meet

We weren't sure you're gonna be able to look is back and you're functioning and i hope the the the inside temperature in your home is going back up and we are just comfortable cozy. Hopefully it stays this way Hopefully the the worst has come and gone but yeah we're we're back in business. Why don't we talk about the weather. Because i think it's one of the things people you know. Everybody talks about the weather but It was negative. Twenty three where i live yesterday and i checked the weather in siberia just just to see in siberia was like in the twenties about forty degrees warmer anti bureau. You are in the area of the united states. apparently i have no comeback for that We were we were. We were under zero for seventy two consecutive hours joining us from boston massachusetts. Is tim bontemps. No more weather. Talk tim somehow. Somehow the weather's better here than it is about. Texas ended nebraska. They're in alaska. They got bumped up still number two my ballot but they got bumped up and i can't argue against it. Unbelievable member too high to tune who number two tall is frozen. Mcmahon's clear listen. NBA: Anthony Davis injured as Los Angeles Lakers lose to Denver Nuggets
"The loss angeles lakers win up against that man. The stretch mark five and the nuggets and took an l. the court but they also took an l. in the locker room because that is where anthony davis add ahead during the game because of an achilles injury that he's going to give mri on tonight. What does this potential health scare mean lakers moved forward in their goals. Lebron is in that goal conversation. But anthony davis got the keys keys keys. He got the keys keys keys because he's inter they will not win the western conference in on it and that's the beautiful thing about teams wars. They could be as deep as any squat in the history of the nba. Anthony davis they are not winning west. The utah jazz are gonna be right there and partake as a team that come to mind. The denver nuggets is the team that comes to mind. The los angeles lakers are going to be outstanding. As long as the brian chase is healthy mantras herald. Great pickup kyle kuzma playing well. Dennis schroder getting quality minutes lakers are stacked but without. Anthony davis the clippers jazz. Somebody else be winning the western conference. If you don't get
Golden State Warriors "Just Not Going to Win Enough"
"Now the Golden State Warriors they were on the losing end of tonight's contest. Steph Curry dropped 27 points and Gabe Steps been playing well all year long Averaging about 32nd in the league in scoring if I'm not mistaking, where is he on your M V P list? Early n v P list. Early n v p list. I mean, he's to me he would be in like my finalist category and probably top three. The issue is Golden State's is not gonna win enough, right? I mean, it's impressive that they are where they are, because without clay, it's just such a different team and you look around I mean, one. Anderson. This is a guy I'm in Milwaukee. And for those who don't know one Anderson, who started tonight for Golden State he played for Marquette's here in Milwaukee. Like years ago, when Golden State played the Bucks on Christmas, I went No, that can't be the same one. Anderson. This is a guy who, like played Mexico for a little bit and like this is a guy who is currently starting for the Golden State Warriors to the fact that they're above 500. Steph has them that's impressive, but at the end of the day I just feel like he doesn't really have an opportunity to win the award, despite him being so incredibly impressive to me to have the Warriors where they are right now, because that roster just isn't what it was. A couple of years ago when they're going to finals after finals after finals. Yeah, I'd have him behind LeBron. We know where the eye LeBron I don't know, but I haven't behind LeBron. I'm calling it this year. This year. LeBron's gonna He's gonna get the M V. P for all the years he should have got it and didn't get it. You know, Because there we know there's been many years. Well abroad probably was the best player in the NBA. But sometimes the voters like the past that M V P trophy. Around, you know to a bunch of guys and speaking of LeBron, the Lakers have won seven straight. They play the Nuggets tomorrow night, and I would say they're the hottest team in the NBA, but they can't catch the Utah Jazz. What do you think about that match up The top two teams at this moment in the Western Conference show the thing that's gonna be really interesting for me in the in the West. And it is. Can Utah hold off the Lakers and well, I mean, we've got a long way to go. You know, they've only played 26 games. The jazz. The Lakers have played 27. But if the Jazz can somehow hold them off and get that number one seed, I mean, I'm a guy who doesn't typically buy into the seating in the embassy. Just because we've seen in the past with LeBron's teams on the calves, and you know the LeBron teams out with the Lakers, and you don't have to have that number one overall seed like we know the Lakers are good. But his deepest that Western conference is and if the Lakers and Clippers have to do you know battle and go head to head before the Western Conference finals like that's wildly interesting to me because I think the Clippers are a team there are slowly starting to figure it out as well. And if that's not the Western Conference finals match if that ends up being a Western Conference semifinal matchup I actually do think that that's one of those things that could potentially matter in the Western Conference this year.
Gobert, Jazz beat Bucks 129-115 for 6th straight win
"The Utah Jazz continued their torrid win pace with a one twenty nine one fifteen victory over the Milwaukee Bucks really go bear had a double double with twenty seven points and twelve rebounds as the jazz won for the seventeenth time in the last eighteen games we will put it out to be to be able to be in a position where we are in right now and you know it's it's exciting and we got a you know always keep trying to find ways to get better and on and on sametime you know and enjoy every single moment Joe Ingles scored twenty seven points for Utah shooting seven for nine from three point range while Donovan Mitchell had twenty six points and Jordan Clarkson came off the bench to score twenty five for the jazz Yanis added a combo topped the box with twenty nine points and fifteen rebounds I'm Jim Bernard

"Earbuds already in their ears by recon dot com slash. No dunks next question. Let's do it all right here. We go hey guys. I'll be honest. I wasn't a huge fan of big beef volumes. One through three but around volume four. It started growing on me. It's gone to the point where i find trays. Big segments irresistible. I work from home and often have the pod playing in the background. No matter what. I'm doing. When i hear that big beef soundtrack fire up. I stop everything and dance. Like i'm the old guy at rape. I just have to make sure. If i'm on zoom. I smash those mutant video buttons. You don't wanna get caught my question. What is something that makes you stop what you're doing. No matter what the circumstances. Thanks from sean in maine skeets what do you think well just to speak quickly about big beef. A sort of sort of with you shy but to me it was like i realize big beef was a great bit because it was really funny to me at the beginning like the first time twenty rebounds roast beef here. It is the highlights. It's hilarious and then i think around like three or four. Maybe because they were coming really quickly to. I was like i don't know if people care about this. Is this funny. Do i like this but then it took a you know like a great bit. You just keep driving home. It suddenly becomes even more hilarious. I love it even more. So that's where i'm at. Of course. Now i'm all in on being beef so it's a well played. Tko it of course stick with it but they were coming so fast and furious there for a bit. I mean you know more than anyone cutting all these highlights so it was honestly ridiculous. The first big beef happened that we hadn't had twenty rebound game yet in the nba. I think there were four that week. After i said something stupid in a in a beach stepping yell it's called roast beef rebounds and suddenly suddenly. They're all over the place and now the people can't get enough beef in their maoz tasty very very tasty. I mean people can't get enough beef that jd's cold opens or about dogs waiting on. I mean that's next level So anyway all china. I'm glad to hear you are as well but to answer your question. Something that makes you stop what you're doing no matter the circumstances to movies if they're on tv at any point and we're talking not and t so the commercials are things like five hours long with all the commercial breaks. I will still stop. Whatever i'm doing and just watch a little bit and maybe even the rest of the movie because i love them so much. Gladiator i always stop what. I'm doing to watch at least a good chunk of gladiator seen it. Obviously hundreds of times it feels like and interstellar which i've talked about before that was just on the other day and i found myself watching it again So yeah those two movies. It doesn't matter what. I'm doing. What i've been watching if i'm flipping through and i've seen them on. I'm stopping i am. I just love those movies either. Easy to jump in at any point. You can always like this scene. Here we go and with interstellar you like maybe. I'll even figure it out a little bit more with each with each viewing so those two for me always. I don't know if anybody else went this route with like the movie rotely. You're nodding away. What are you going. Yeah did goodfellas orrin. Glorious mazdas for me aft goodfellas especially. It's just the. But i have to watch it through no matter where you pick it up. It's like all right. I got to see this through because it is is i. I haven't dropped cable awhile ago. So it's been good. I haven't had to do that for wall. But it's just one of those movies met a way pick it up all right. I mean all right whatever always planning on doing sorry. Don traded you go the movie route. I didn't go the movie route. Because there's never a time when i'm flipping and finding movies. I can't believe you guys are still finding tv movies for me. If i'm gonna put on a movie putting on a movie it's not going to be random movie coming up. This isn't nineteen ninety-six guy. I don't know what it is flipping through changes so nice when you see a live movie. It's life never been here before i throw. I'm watching like a life below zero. I'm watching one of these weird reality shows where they're out in the arctic fishing or something it's like a commercial break all right. Let's flip around. Oh gladiator yes. Oh this scene. Oh my god. He's on the horse is trying to race back to get to his family spoiler alert. They're dead and yeah. That's when that's when. I'm always flipping around between commercial. Breaks for these dumb shows up watching like but that's okay. So where are you going. What's your answer. New top shop packs obviously a couple of days ago. I was up at two in the morning. 'cause i hopped in the queue. I was like i'm in the queue now. I got to see if i can work my way up from number seventeen thousand to get a nine pack of highlights here. It happened lull. Asleep woke up. Oh yeah there are sold-out but any time they're telling me they're going to have new packs out. I'm refreshing like crazy. Skeets talked me into getting ready to drop a grand on attack on hollow. I'm taking the dog out. Go to the bathroom and the dog park. I'm like hold on. I'll get your turds in a second year. The packs are dropping. The packs are dropping skeets. It's still in the line. I thought they were all gone still on the line. We got to see what happens here. Saturday right yeah. It was on the weekend. We didn't get the by the way people there was not many of them to be had and there was a bit of an error and you went back to turns were dropping quicker than attack got a couple of yams moments version or anybody wants to trade literally going to pony up a thousand bucks if and that's why we were like i mean that was part of the fun of it like the odds of us getting the chance to buy it like. Oh yeah basically minuscule but we were like if we do get the chance are we. Do you want it. We were talking about splitting it or something like that. In fact we were gonna go Third seon it with amir.

"They can't have another Stumble in the playoffs. Now if they get to the second round. If they're facing the clippers and my do have home court advantage as you mentioned which they need it then. I think. I think that would almost go into that. Series is a favorite to beat the clippers. So they can do it but it's fair also to be skeptical of them because they haven't been able to do it in the playoffs at times so You need to see that change before you can be really convinced but they go on these win streaks and they go on these streets during the season as some of their basketball is some of the best because that ball does zipper ran the very solid off. The jazz are even tweeting various place. How many very solid plays we had this season. So they know what it's all bad. Share that ball but but a sign of a good thing for me. He's like when it's like no matter who gets that ball on the perimeter obviously furuta. He's never there anyway. But it's like this guy can knock in that and every everybody on the jazz one guy didn't mention. I think we had like a little bit of love to royce. O.'neil like he's hitting the three ball and like forty five percent on four three point attempts per game but then he's like sort of their perimeter sort of defensive guy which i which i love to so yeah. They're all playing the role. But you got mitchell shooting. Forty two percent from three royce on the said forty five rounded up to forty six percent bogdonovich forty two on a lot of attempts conley. Forty one ingles forty-three jordan clarkson. It's like the worst of the bunch and he's shooting thirty eight percent from three on a lot of attempts. It's everybody is on fire but lately that can be contagious. Sometimes right especially with the ball you turn down a good look for a better look and these guys are obviously got a little confidence right now in letting it fly and quin snyder as given them the green light and said yeah we should play more like this like we got a great defense. Lets you more threes shooters on the squad. So let's do it. So i could see what you guys are saying. We want to get excited about them. But you know it's a little reminiscent to me of like good raptors teams in years prior when especially as trae said you gotta get the big boss man. You gotta get by lebron. Well yeah they'd have great regular seasons and you can start to convince yourself play a good team game. They got their balanced offensively and defensively. Like until you actually go through the playoffs and win. A couple of rounds. It's tough to ultimately convince specially the casual like the general public but you. What'd you have on their sixth according to bed. Mgm as favourite for the western conference forth in the western conference. Seems a bit low to me. I would definitely have at least above the nuggets In that mix and probably about the clippers as well at least right now now. I think that's fair. So there you go a little jazz talk li. I can't wait to hear you on. Are you going to do. Hey this is my top five jazz players of all time on sirius. Xm please but then don't talk about jazz. Players talk about musicians and horace silver yes. Valentine's day is coming up for a lot of guys that can mean added pressure to perform. I mean there's the dinner gotta make it this year. I'm not going out There's chocolates flowers got a higher.

"Yes ready for some recency bias. Well here we go. What's up. Knox crew with lamelo ball. No we're not gonna call him mellow playing out of his mind. I started wondering. Who would you rather build a franchise around lamelo or trey young. Both of them are instant offense. But little defense keep on throwing out those classics. Ps jd raise hats from land. Mines checking in from belgium. And just before you answer trae we put this up on youtube and the recency by going strong there as well. Lamelo taken trae young. This is a thousand plus votes the middle at fifty-six percent over trae young. Everybody hot on. What about you trade you got tray or what's going on. I mean it's a tough question. Let's be honest here tasks nobody wanted to answer at. Nobody had the guts to sign up for the answer. I for the first question because nobody wants to pick against lamelo ball right now. You've said it a few times on what you need to know. We only care about what lamelo can do. We're not worried about what he can't do at this point. And i think that that's why you're seeing that huge advantage for lamelo in the youtube boat lawrence nailed it here though different players. They have similar impacts. They both remade their teams instantly in their image. Don't really have much to do with defense. If you're comparing strength strength lamelo has the size that gives him an advantage rebounding. He's a pretty good rebounder for a point guard. He does have more of a defensive impact. He's in this in passing lanes steals. I think he's probably a little bit. Better passer then trae young is and he brings you the joy and the leadership which is almost enough to convince me. It's like a jason kidd effect out there. With mellow he's fun. It's fun to play with him. Because if you keep cutting you're going to get the ball at some point and you've seen the effect that he has on the hornets you've seen the effect that he has on his coach. James borrego who said. He has more joy when he's coaching lamelo ball. That being said i think trae young could lead the league in scoring and or assists. I don't know about the same year. That'd be pretty tough. But i think he could do one or the other even old enough to remember his rookie season two long time ago but he wants time was the next level passer changing the game. Doing it with both hands has every single pass in his bag as a rookie. You gotta be able to shoot in today's nba. I have a little bit more in trays. Shot he's just under more scrutiny. Right now we expect trae young to take his team to the playoffs. Where with mellow he's been starting for a week and a half so we love it. You can't go wrong either. Way gimme trae right now. Though i mean. I don't have much else to add to that. I'm team trae in this. One as great as exciting as lamelo ball is and he probably will be franchise cornerstone but so is train. He is right now and he doesn't give you a whole lot on the defensive end. Lamelo actually is already as a rook brutal on that end of the floor so that is a plus for him. But i'm team trae in this vote. I am shocked by that. I gotta be honest. Tasks the breakdown of the vote i i would have thought it would be flipped like fifty percent fifty six percent for for trae young and then forty four percent which i would still consider a little high for a guy that's played a couple of weeks in the nba. But people love new things right. So i guess it's maybe not people think they're they're living in the moment. I'll play the bad guy here. And i'll say i'll go with lamelo ball because i wish lamelo ball wasn't shooting the ball as well as he is so far because that was the big knock on him coming in athletic. Better defend a good rebound great pasig great basketball iq but he can't shoot well. He's shooting pretty well for a rookie. Yeah the shooting. Overall as well forty three percent from the field thirty six percent from downtown and eighty percent from the free throw line and we know since he started. He's been very very good. So it's very recent very very recent literally. It's like what happened. Yes that. I didn't play lamilla did. Let's go lamelo but i do really think that lamelo ball coming in and and we talked about it a lot and skeets especially you you sort of like he's gonna not we just don't know and based on what we saw from london. You thought you know it's gonna take a while for that shot to come around. Well it's already come around way quicker than lonzo's did and lonzo obviously gone to the lakers. Completely different situation as the first of the of the ball brothers into the league he came in with so much heart yep and he hasn't been really able to live up to remain good but not quite as good as a number two pick sort of should be so when lamelo comes along and he didn't even go to college we kind of like He's probably not going to be better than lonzo bet. And i think he's probably he's he's creat me. Looks like he could be better than lonzo ball. And i just liked the fact that he is six six point. God who can rebound and defend that. The dry young cannot really do any probably won't be able to do that certainly the rebounding as defender. He does get exploited a little bit because if saw as he's not just only six one. He's a thin guy. So we've seen guys like isiah. Thomas and chris paul around that same heartbeat good defender. So it's not as i trade can't vote into a good defender but i think lonzo lamelo has an advantage. Just because of he's hot and at his athleticism so i'll just take today just to make things interesting. Well yeah this is picking like jason kidd or steph curry. I'm meteorologist at the both of their careers on the trajectory. Is they are. That's what we're actually getting into. And then you're like ooh. Yeah that hall of famer. This hall of famer i mean. Hopefully they're both great players. But where do you side task. I'm taking trae young for sure At this point lamelo ball. The story couldn't be any better if you wanna pick him right. He's you know off the bench for several games and everybody wanting to see him in the starting lineup Let's let's clean the dirt off that guy. Bring him on into the starting lineup. Now the shiny new toy for everybody and he came in and he's shooting lights out lights out so I think he can be a decent defender. And i'm sure everybody riding high with lobello. I actually i watch him. And i think my god he's nineteen and he's frigging strong with both hands passing the ball left and right. You don't see that very often. I don't think trae had that right off. The bat owner. Dan he did with this. Latter four lefty or sure guaranteed guaranteed go watch. The rookie highlight types man. This guy was incredible. I guess going yeah. He was sous tossing it to the corners and stuff like this is early. This is like ten games in because of his size. I think like like lamelo in comparing detroit. I'm with our trae here. Like i think he was doing this too early on but they're both awesome. I mean they're both incredible playmakers. That's that's the best part i mean. As much as we fawn over lamelo trae young was like nutmeg. Guys left and right out of the gate and throw an incredible dimes. But he's great and strong. And i think he's got some like defensive awareness. Cvs standing up. He's not really in the the athletic position. He's just kinda standing up but then he'll he'll pop right back in and play the right lane and get their and tip a ball but yeah i mean he's just the numbers are gonna come down they are. I hope they don't but of course is a shooting. Percentages are gonna come down a little bit especially as a starter like he. He wasn't straight shooting great off the bench but anyways we're talking about lamelo. We're talking about the hornets. So it's a great start..
A Deep Dive Into Rudy Gobert After the Jazz Lose To Denver
"Talk about Rudy. Gobert. What? What do we want to know about mr. Gaubert because I thought before today and obviously today is Sunday. I thought before the day that he was running away with the defensive player of the year award. And then today happened today happened. I would not go as far as running away with the defensive player wage. I thought he was running away. I thought it was a significant gap between him and everybody else. So I totally understand why you would say that their top five and defense coming into town today. They're really really good team Utah. They are arguably playing better before today than anybody in the NBA just point blank. Especially now that the Lakers have hit like off a bit of a bit of a malaise having said that I'm still saying Anthony Davis Ford Prince of player of the year because they've number one defense and he's the one the keys the number one defense in the NBA off. He's by far the most versatile defender in the NBA Rudy I think is a reasonable like honestly probably would be second for me right now Myles Turner has a case sneaky class that I've been advocating as much as I can Larry Nance would probably be in my top five right now. He is the whole reason that the Cavs have a reasonable defense. Yep. Right now a top-10 defense, but I digress nonetheless Rudy gobert has been very very good for the Utah Jazz this year and I thought that Utah's games this week. We're kind of a perfect encapsulation of the Rudy gobert experience against Dallas. He was the reason that they just come holy month and utterly annihilated the Mavericks in both of those games and I watched the first one close cuz I bet on Dallas because Utah was without Donovan Mitchell was without a favors and Dallas was getting back Dorian finney-smith was getting back to like Powell. I thought that they'd take that energy and catch you too on the back end of a back-to-back and be kind of run away with that game and that absolutely one hundred percent was the wrong side to be on and in large part. It was because of the incredible grass. City that Rudy gobert holds as a pick-and-roll offensive threat, he is completely obliterated kristaps porzingis in that in those two games like butterwood obliterated him like wipe them off the face of the Earth on both ends. He averaged 23 points and 16 rebounds. He had like three blocks. He had a couple of steals. He was dead thing that people who are Jazz fans and that yell from the rooftops about Rudy. Gobert. He was everything in those two games that people say about Rudy being like a top-12 impact player in the NBA. You'll hear sometimes in this game today against Denver Nikola jokic made him look like a parking cone on defense and
Utah Jazz Rally Past New York Knicks
"All right. The next fall the utah jazz. One hundred ninety four last night. We'll go there. Had eighteen points and nineteen rebounds and four blocks up as he was a impact layer for the utah jazz last night. Also being a factor in the game was royce o'neill who scored a career high twenty points helping you to overcome a quiet night without mitchell. Who much of a factor. Offensively also scored twenty five points for the new york knicks. Who are who the all scoring in first. Half also in the scoring was largely barrett who scored seventeen points for the next end of although the next belt of the third straight game

Utah Jazz beat New Orleans Pelicans for 7th straight win
"Hosting the pelicans. This is interesting because we haven't had a lot of opportunities to see. Teams play the same team back to back. The home in home. Or in this case. The road in road. New Orleans Lost two got blown out by Utah the other night in Utah. They play Utah in Utah. They're very next game. Scheduling cork. Jazz. Herceptin Point favorites. I'll take the Jazz Ling seven. They beat the pelicans by like 20 the other night. Only have to beat them by like eight. I'll take the Jazz to cover

"And that's that's pretty exciting. Listen you grew up a jazz fan. I imagine you have like a bunch of friends that you've had lifelong friends who you grew up together. Jazz fans jazz have limited. You're one of the teams in the league that are have allowed limited fans in But they'll come a point where you can fill your building again and do all that a. I'm sure everybody wants take. It's you're going to be there hookup now but how much you get now from your friends. They grew up with jazz fans. Hey make this trae do that. What do you what do we like. How much of that stuff where you're getting so far i really haven't i'll be honest. I'm surprised You know people are pretty supportive. I mean no one said a word. But you know when when donovan still got don and came back. Jc and. i've just seen excitement and people really excited. I think the the tickets sponsorships are all coming around. That and i hope. I hope these guys feel the support of jazz nation in reality. It's been it's been a weird season. I mean you know if i think about our players and our guys they haven't had you know we're we've got one of the most active loudest fan bases in the country and everyone talks about it and not hearing that group. Cheer for you for you know. Almost a year is is different. You know it's it's different. And i think it's it's been cool to have limited players in the arena. I'll i've heard from who have come in is. I didn't realize how much i needed this. I've had people just. Dm me tax me and say my soul needed this more than i knew. And the way spreading out with fifteen hundred fans. It's for safety protocols standpoint. it's pretty impressive. What are teams done to get ready and our staff in the arena. If feels incredibly safe. I mean i felt a lot safer inside the arena than i have it a grocery store experience store or or other places because it's such a large space So yeah well ryan smith. The new owner of the utah. Jazz and jazz are off to a good start. This is going to be this. This is my connolly's playing Has gotten off to a great start which is important for this team and your star players have been your stars this is this is gonna be a fun season and hopefully by the end of it ryan. You'll have in arena. I don't know. I don't know if we're going to have packed arenas by the end of the season but probably baby perhaps have more than fifteen hundred so good luck the rest of the way this year. This was a lot of fun. I'm glad we got to visit here and happy new year. Ryan yeah you too. Thanks for.

"Of your planning your thinking your conversations with donovan mitchell rudy and your players coach coaches. Your front office is is that ben at the forefront since you've taken over yeah i think i think as we look at the experience of utah. We're looking at all the experiences. And i think you know some of the work that we've done. Quality has been pretty impressive here. We've ruined relocating about four hundred different people a year here for the last four or five years and you know getting a much more. Diverse crowd diverse group. And we've kind of seen what works and what doesn't work and so is we think about everything were doing as an organization. It's definitely top of mind. I think that you know coming into the organization and frankly the nba. I think there were a lot of questions for a lot of people are saying. Hey what does the movement that that's gone on in. How can i go and help support our players. And how can i support our team But a couple of things. Surprise me when i got in to the organization number one is our fans are really truly behind our players now. There's people on social media who i don't know there are fans are not but as i jumped into the data. We were top. Four team in ticket renewal. We had one cancellation of a suite. That was pretty vocal about about some of the use of the platform of the league. I want to touch on that ryan you talked about. There was a company that had had a sweet in your arena for a very long time. Who was very public about the fact that they were no longer. They weren't gonna renew the sweet. They felt like they couldn't support the jazz as long as the nba and the jazz were supporting black. Lives matter and donovan. Mitchell who has been a leader among and that just players with the jazz but around the league you know he tweeted at. I think there was a story in your local media about it and data tweeted at. Hey it's your right to do that. Essentially walk away just like it's our right just like it's ours. Our right to kneel and and you tweeted over that and you said essentially listen. It'll be easy to fill the suite with all the amazing companies in utah and if the utah jazz i'm happy to take it over and give it to underrepresented minority groups this season. So you did it there. You have done it publicly since you bought the team. You've made it pretty clear where you stand. How you stand and that if you if you're not going to stand for these human rights if you're not going to stand for these values then you're fine with somebody like if that means they don't want to buy a ticket or they don't wanna buy sweeter. They don't wanna botch the jazz. You are accepting of that because it seems like this is a value for you that you're not going to compromise on. Let me tell you how. I've gotten their personally. I looked at my own organization. We have offices in twenty five different locations around the world and we are about as innovative as any company. I've seen as far as how we treat people how we change the work environment and how we use the platform to do good and is we got through on over the last couple of years on where we've been focusing whether it was gender equality whether it was pay intact if i were just to say to a ratio standpoint we were spending probably fifty to one efforts on other things as opposed to social justice issues and i truly believe that we have platforms to do good in systemic racism or unconscious bias around racial issues or social issues. It's real we had it within our own organization and it wasn't that people were consciously trying to do something we weren't active in saying. Hey we're gonna go use our platform to drive systematic change and we have equity problems across pay across race within our communities. And i just wanna look back and say. Hey i did everything i possibly could to make the world more equitable place. And i'll just tell you like we have not been doing everything we possibly can and people have been using the platform of the nba to go in and drive that change in. You know. I think the one thing that doesn't get talked about is how the players came together to have a very constructive around getting people out to vote. Were telling people out of vote. They were saying. Hey come out and vote and we drove more people than ever to boat. I think the nba has a big big piece of pride that they should have in that of using the platform to do good. That is a very kind and honest and earnest. Ask for folks in our group plans on using the jazz to in this platform to be able to drive proper chain. That frankly should have been done a long time ago but to help better our communities. One of the things that we're doing is forever jazz win this year. We're offering a four year scholarship to underrepresented or minority kid. Who can now go to college for every single wind and that is a great use of this platform to drive change. And we're going to continue to build out our community and i stand with our players in. I just couldn't be more proud of of how the nba's coming together. And i think that we're going to affect change for the good and that's look i've seen it with cancer. There's not a better platform in the world. Drive change and i look at what we've done and we have nine new cancer. Researchers sitting at huntsman. Cancer walking around with a fine for the fire. Oh we're going to have hopefully sixty new college kids out. There wouldn't have had a chance to go to college. And so we're excited about how to leverage the platform to do good and this is good. Yeah i think you're you're announcing that initiative think formerly this week i think is the first time you're talking about a publicly. I know your players know about the initiative. I had heard that there was a win in the preseason and guys were company like does. This count toward the scholarships which apparently it does right. Yeah that's right and it was interesting because we talk to everyone about it about what we're going to be doing this season. We're gonna be doing a lot more. That's just one of the initiatives we have on the education front. We've got something to have much more equitable health care economic opportunity. And we've got these task force that are greater where people in the organization players can get involved in. I hope it brings people together. I hope other companies can get on a partner with the jazz to help maybe create a lot. More than just however many scholarships we're gonna do but we're gonna lead out and it is not only to give folks money have had a chance. It's also like a lot of people. Don't know how to get the process. Going of getting the collagen and i've talked to enough universities. I started you know our tech company by targeting universities and so we work with almost every university out there and we're going to pair them together. It's going to be a marketplace where we will go to university and say hey we want. Five or six scholarships guaranteed what we're going to bring kids. Who have never had a chance to do this into your university. And we're gonna help cover the cost. Will you accept them or is there something we can do. And i think that the opportunities never been greater for that. And joe and i don. They were asking like okay. We had a preseason win. They're like this that counters wanted like. Yeah the council wins. Ah win in reality is were. Were just trying to drive change and you know i would rather talk less than just act more right now. This is a great signal of action in just like the players encouraging vote. That was just such a great action oriented move. And that's exactly what the intention was of taking a combined voice using the platform to do good ryan you. You've you've been public about this. You you talk to glenn taylor minnesota about buying the timber wolves. They've been sort of on and off the mark in recent years. I seem to be.

"Everyone welcome in to another edition of the which pot here with the new utah. Jazz owner ryan smith ryan. How are you good. Thanks for having me on man. Thanks for jumping in. Let me start here ryan you. You bought the jazz one point six six in that vicinity billion dollars From the miller family you were approved by the board of governors just before christmas. And now you're fully engaged. You're you're the owner of the jazz. You take over very good team in the western conference and you grew up a jazz fan. Which i think people have heard about you but in the short time you've owned the team ryan. Has there been some like as you're learning all the things that come with an nba team. Is there some perk or something or access that. You're like wow. I didn't know. Nba owners got to do this or had access to that in the league or something that surprised you so far that people would know. That's kind of cool. You get to do or you get to have access to is an mba owner. Yeah i mean look. I think it's been a three week process here even a little bit before that because you know we announced in we were kind of working through the the transition process. It's not an overnight thing I i was pretty close to the team i mean. I sat right on the bench next to greg miller. I always felt like i was part of it. But probably the biggest surprise is how much time is spent in the practice facility versus the arena. I mean we focus so much on the arena. And when i took over the team they hand me a badge and i walk into the practice facility and i was like okay like this is where the magic happens. This is where training happens is where the eating happens and as a fan that was as close to the team as i was not to ever experienced that world lii in we're only in the arena games forty nights a year for on average of four hours. But we're spending the rest of our lives during the year together in that practice facility is really where the hard work takes place that that was probably the most surprising the most interesting aspect of that for me. I am amazed. I become an arms race among nba teams just like in college with facilities. And the jazz is up there with anybody's somebody else comes. They study each other. They take from each other and then but yours is remarkable. And like all the little things i and i've been in there a few times and spent time and like i remember being downstairs with quin snyder and him talking about you know the video room where the guys are would always be. You know block walls like you're in a dungeon that's sort of the stories you hear about that in the older you know previous days in the league and he wanted to room with light he wanted big windows there. Because you get the press down there you spend so much time in there or the way you guys like you have that restaurant kitchen there that guys come through in can order meals and there's a big fire and like there was even like thought to how they enter the facility where they come in. We're at funnels them to and and then how they leave. It's really pretty i. I don't think the average person 'cause they don't spend the time they're realize and especially in the pandemic now where you you know you're gonna spend even more time there because you don't want you don't want guys out and around yours is pretty amazing. Yeah they the millers had done a great job going through one hundred forty million dollar renovation of both the arena the practice facility. And i i feel like i just found the best restaurant in utah and it's sitting in our practice facility. And then you know i think Both quinn in steve who who had been instrumental in designing it really thought about it is the way we would design any of our office spaces right where you've seen such a transformation both tack in the way that we go to work and our set up and i think that will even be further enhanced through the pandemic of how we all work together in work remotely in so i think i think our practice facility is just another extension of that and and i've seen a few of them in the league and i definitely like where where we've got in the bones of where we can't even go to improve on that ryan when you like. You said you knew the miller family. You sat there you had had you know it's funny. People see the jersey patches on uniform in league and that's become it's a big revenue stream for teams and you know essentially everywhere else. It's a product. It's a company and the jazz. I think he had to explain to people. What is five for the fight. What does that mean is that an. It's it was a fundraising mechanism for cancer research. That you started through quality tricks your around your company and so you knew all the you knew the players the players were doing commercials for you. They were a part of it. They were wearing on their jersey. You were raising Up over twenty. Four twenty five million dollars for it and so that was your entry point into the organization before you even thought right about putting going to the millers and saying hey would you think about maybe selling me the team. Yeah we we. We had this idea the millers that approached us and said you know what what do you think about being jersey sponsor and they brought in jersey with quantocks on it in a couple of years earlier. We launched this campaign of around crowd sourcing for cancer research and it started with a gentleman by the name of jon. Huntsman who huntsman senior. Who had who had basically develop this entire cancer institute around this in in you know a crazy story to even go back further. Was you know. I was a sophomore in college. I was working down in la. I was doing enter chip. And i got a call that no one wants to get. Which is my father telling me. He's got three months to live. And i came back. I dropped out of school. I was going to. Byu at the time. And i said you know what my father got three months. There's no more important than me. Spending time with them in he would go to radiation treatments. And you know there was some doctor up at the cancer center would come up with a technique that was the least invasive process to be able to get rid of his cancer or laser out his cancer and that saved his life and through the three months that we were together. My father was an academic. He was a scientist We came up with wall tricks and we started this company so instead of like going and fixing up an old car we decided we were going to build a tech company. And we're gonna do it in our basement and that's grown to be this twenty year run in the success stories and olive tech based on cancer. And i remember at the time. Going to jon. Huntsman at saint. Hey like the work you've done saved my father's life and look what's come out of it. I ever had any money. I'm going to dedicate towards helping you raise money for cancer and by the way the model. You've got where you get a bunch of. I network individuals to go donate big. Slots of of money. Isn't really sustainable. Like why don't we develop something that we could get everyone because it's just as your fight john. It's going to impact all of us to to come up with this. You know i remember before. He died walking in one day and saying. Hey we've got away to crowd fund cancer research and we've also got a way to do it with the nba and he was a huge jazz fan a huge basketball fan. And he said. I've always been looking at a way to crowd fund it and i've always been looking for a way to work with the nba. And you brought me both of those in one day and we decided that we were going to go all in the principle that we have aquatics. We're going to go all in on the patch. We're going to give it away to cancer. And i remembered partnering with the millers when the league's like just put your logo on. Why do.
Booker scores 25, Suns overwhelm Jazz for 106-95 victory
"Devin Booker's twenty five point seven assist night led the way as the Phoenix Suns won their third straight game beating the Utah Jazz one oh six ninety five Booker shot ten of seventeen from the field as the Suns improved to four and one on the season Utah led by a point after the first quarter but the sun's grabbed the lead for good by outscoring the jazz thirty two to eighteen in the second Phoenix connected on seventeen of thirty three three pointers with McHale bridges and J. "They could sell that team for three or four billion today you know that that's that's how much appreciate like eight or ten times. So bring it up scall- because if you break even or close to break-even, ideally you'd break make money every year and the and the value would appreciate but historically, franchise values have appreciated. So even if you lose money year over year look at long-term. All right like. For example, on your house, you pay a mortgage money goes out but hopefully, over time the value of the house appreciates. So when you sell it, even if you're losing money paying down the mortgage, you make money because evaluate up from when you bought and sold it look at an NBA team. The same way you know will they continue to go up I don't know that but keep in mind scale. There are a lot of billionaires only thirty NBA teams and Ryan Smith. Again he is from Salt Lake. City, this isn't any team could he have gone and bought the Minnesota Timberwolves for less than one point six? Yeah. I think he could happen. He didn't want that he wanted this team. He's a billionaire. He's he's he's made a ton of money at a young age. You wanted this team Steve Ballmer the Clippers said I want it maybe it's worth one point three or one point four I don't know but paying that premium was worth it to guarantee that he got the team he wanted and my guess is overtime five or ten years from now if the when the pandemics over if current trends continue that the team will be worth more than one point, six billion if he wants to resell it in twenty, twenty, five or twenty thirty. That's amazing because. There's GonNa. Be tweets out there that say stop light. So the owners are struggling but teams are going from one place billions. Spencer didn't wait he and his math I'm I'm new to this agent thing but let me do my numbers real quick like this and owners lose money but franchises which are bought for four hundred are now we're ten times that amount. Alright. Alright. Yeah Businesses good businesses good but. On the flip side from from. Ryan. Smith Perspective scall-. Let me go on record saying this. What is we sit here in late October looking at my calendar Octobber Twenty, eight, twenty, twenty I'm going to go on record and say I wouldn't be in any way surprised if this is not the only NBA team sold in the next six months because again, owners businesses are down, you know they're hurting financially. You know now Minnesota, we know at least allegedly is for sale seems like it may be for sale. So that could be the one that could be others as well. So some of these men and women, their businesses are really hurting scale that own team so I bring it up because one point six billion as you mentioned for the jazz is a great return. Especially in this environment, it's a good return and then but if you Ryan Smith to look at it the other way I think he says all. Right. Well, if I wait a year to comes back into the system, maybe the millers businesses and and I'm just speculating, but maybe Miller's businesses car dealerships in movie theaters whatever else they're more stable. So at that point, they might not need to sell her want to sell because they're doing better. So it's like buying anything else a house, a car stock you want to buy when value Kinda dips a little better. There's an opportunity to buy, and then you hold over time and the money goes back up but. We've talked enough about the Utah Jazz but congratulations scale on their way out the door to the Miller family. This is a tweet from major emotion twenty minutes ago that I think shows just how well the jazz have done under the family ownership. Since buying the team in the mid nineteen eighties, the kept it in Salt Lake, they have sixteen fifty win seasons nine division titles in two Western Conference champions ships on scale since the one thousand. Nine hundred eighty, nine, nine, hundred, and ninety season only the San Antonio Spurs have a better winning percentage in the entire NBA than the Utah Jazz, the jazz were. One, thousand, four, hundred, seventy, and one, thousand fourteen with a five, ninety-two winning percentage under the jazz that is elite scale. You know how hard that is to do especially in the western conference in particular in a non free agent destination. So on their way out the door credit to the Miller family. I BELIEVE Guilt or first name and Greg Her. Son took over for late Larry H.? Miller. They did a very good job when they own the team and I think jazz fans would be thankful for what they did on the way out the door. Get One, point six, billion you happy or sad I mean I. Feel like I'm going on vacation somewhere that I find out where I can go. Let me in. Quarantine for two weeks. But I feel like you like in this environment I'm happy I think one hundred percent sure. There's gotta be a little bit of sadness but in general, right you've got to be. Pretty happy you've. quintupled your money or whatever was the yes. I think more than that. We have to go back and figure out. How much they made a functional that will come out later today. Gail Miller. Relate husband Larry on the team. She's seventy seven years old. So Seattle with that kind of respect with that big SKRELA is you call it? You could probably go to. Richard Branson. The founder of Virgin have that private island I? Think it's called Necker island or somewhere in the in the Bahamas. I want that I want the whole island. Corinthian. There's no quarantine. There's no social distancing nobody else can get here. I'm taking this island for a month or whatever inviting my friends, and that's what we're gonNA. Do I think that's if you and I ever have one point six, billion dollars in in by team either way skela brainy McDonnell be on an island then all all of your listeners and viewers and scowls invited don't hold me to that case. It ever happens. You're just invite me like I'm a great guy to hang around for two weeks after that weeks. Good man good. Some people quarantine for two weeks something out with scale for two weeks and think that's enough time and then they have to move onto the next thing. It's. So, scale up. Let's get into shifting gears a little bit. Let's get into what Pat Riley said a few days ago. Now after the win, it raised some eyebrows I actually mean after the Lakers, the Miami Heat, and the NBA finals. Here's what the basketball boss they call them the Godfather in Miami. Scowl. The legend, pat, Riley said after the L. A. Lakers beat a depleted Miami Heat team to win the twenty twenty NBA championship that Riley said quote I would like to see what it would be like with everybody whole we'll get our chance again. The Lakers. Have the greatest player in the game today and Lebron and Anthony Davis. Beat US fair and square but they're always there will always be that asterisk if we had Bam and Gore on one hundred percent Goran are leading score entering the finals it might have gone to a seventh game. Close quote. NOW SCOWL HE I'll say in a minute you know he kind of clarified that. But what is your reaction to that quote and is that something you think is a big deal or something Riley should have said. So. If I could those guys were got suspended because of Corona virus I would save maybe but injuries are part of it. We we put on a pedestal because he takes care of his body and and we should because he dared he played and he played. And he's over fifty thousand minutes and I think it's all part of it. You can't say a newborn to injury problem. You know what you're getting into. You wasn't like this guy was squeaky clean no injury problems and all of a sudden boom this happens out of nowhere this injuries are part of it. If you have to push and Claw and scrap just to get their annalong the way you get hurt then you know that's that's unfortunate. So I don't I don't. I don't give like the Toronto Raptors in Astros because Klay Thompson Kevin Durant, like Klay..

"And you once you make, you get those free agents than you start trading for guys and you're willing to go over to over the tax. Once you get somewhere down the road like the warriors for an example, they did a good job with their payroll they were. You know the big spike in the Cath Consign Kevin Durant and then somewhere in the future you're going to have to pay that bill and they would have paid it this year if Kevin durant would assigned back, everybody would assign back and it would have had a huge tax bill and they probably would have sucked this year. But with all that being said that is that is a big market and when they can do that Utah. How them being being able to spend is going to really like moved the needle and make me think that the jazz are championship team know who who, who could they have gotten on their team where I'm thinking like? Oh. Yeah. For sure. I'm GonNa Pencil these guys in to make it to the Western. conference. Finals. Well, there are a couple of important factors here. Scale one is that terrorists in the Miller family they have spent as you mentioned that they took on more money to bring in Mike, Conley, they extended Joe, ingles, contract they paid on. So they have spent, you know to some level to win. So that's a no way shape or form a knock. At them, it's more scout looking forward. For example, jazz have their tap to players for extensions or hitting free agency Sue Donovan. Mitchell will surely get extended I. Imagine the wanting to do the same thing with rudy bear. So I, bring it up because hypothetically let's say I don't think this would happen but say the jazz were able to trade for another. Stood on the wing did a sign and trade with the New Orleans Pelicans got Brandon Ingram. Now, are you willing to play pay three Max players knowing that it's going to be very difficult to get Kawhi Leonard Paul George Free Agency, and then are you willing to use your exceptions your mid-level exception your biannual exception to go to the attacks are into luxury tax and if you're willing to go in how far are you willing to go that? That's not just spend money I. Think. Again, the jazz have done an excellent job as organization in the short term however the Miller family with the pandemic has taken significant financial hit keeping in mind their main businesses are first and foremost car dealerships which are obviously down I. think that's somewhat self explanatory journey pandemic and I believe they also and movie theaters and things like that scale that are entertainment base that are significantly impacted right now. So I guess the finances from the Miller and their decision to sell out. Ownership did play into it to some extent and Ryan Smith is young. He's a billionaire he's going to be aggressive I think he's very good from what I can tell at generating revenue coming up the creative ideas to drive more money into the business side, and the question is, how do you flip that into basketball and can they at worst maintain the level of their spending at now which is you know solid? Slightly above league average or can can even accelerate that financial growth Recycled that money back into the team which allows them to be more aggressive for a star wing to put between. Gobert and Mitchell is your to building blocks. Gals not just spend money like the Brooklyn Nets tried to do particularly at the right time. Are you willing to push your chips into the middle of the table whether it's young players draft picks or especially a check from the owner to do whatever it takes to win because I'll be honest with you every team is willing to go to that level. Teams and that's why honestly certain teams it'll be very hard for them to ever win because if the owners isn't committed to writing a big check when it's time then there are other teams in the league with richer owners or more aggressive owners as far as spending, and usually over time those teams will beat you because they have more resources. All right. So I want to I want to move onto the other. Stuff going on the NBA but I do WanNa ask you just last question what. How our teams going for My billions and billions of dollars, right. Our teams losing money is that what's going I'm having a hard time. If you have a fifty million dollar tax bill, are you losing money? Are you gaining money in these situations because I've never been clarity on this and I see a franchise is going up and no one's paying one point six, billion dollars. If there's not an element of I get it, there's an ego involved. It's not just like a business. There is an element of emotion I get that. But like with the Utah Jazz rolling in the dough to be able to sell their team for one point six billion or as the motion come into play here and. The new owner wants to be a part of something special and win a championship. Earth lifelong dream of his but that actual numbers don't really make sense. I think it's more the latter where if you looked at it financially year over year, it's probably hard to justify. It does make sense to spend one point six, billion on the Utah Jazz. However scall- look at this way historically especially in the NBA over the last ten or fifteen years the franchise values of skyrocket. I mean look at the Golden State Warriors Scall- that was only a decade or so ago now I believe it was in two thousand, ten Joe Lake of. And Peter Guber bought the team I think it was four, hundred, fifty, million dollars..

"As always five star of our show the White Mama Brian. SCALLOP. Brainy. Scale some amazing news and notes here one from our producer. Jake. Galley we've talked over the first half hour or so of this show about the Utah Jazz being sold breaking news out of Salt Lake. This morning there were sold to young billionaire. Ryan Smith. He's only forty years old he founded. Tech. Company called call tricks based out. Utah, now. He owns the Utah Jazz for a purchase price of one point six, billion dollars. In fact, his introductory press conference is going on right now as scale due to some quick research by our producer Jake Galley who is as usual is on top of these. Things I'm scale. So we go back thirty five years to win. The Miller family bought the Utah Jazz, in the mid eighties killed them Miller's Larry H. Miller family bought the Utah Jazz thirty, five years ago for twenty two, million dollars twenty, two, million with an m they sold the team today to Ryan Smith for one point, six, billion dollars with a B.. So that Brian Gala Brainy over thirty five year period is almost a seventy three times return on your investment scale if you own anything for thirty five years yes that is a long time but if you make seventy three times your money. Well. Yeah. That's that is quite remarkable. Twenty, two man. John Stockton should have just said I'll play for free just give me the teen like, why would you? Why do I need a salad just play for the price of the team I'm trying to think of the owner of. The story but there was a player who back in the day had a contract negotiation and he was asking ownership for contracts and the owner basically said, look the other way. Why don't you give me that money? You know give you the team. If you want that much money. You pay me that and you can own the team. Line I'll do some more searching back tomorrow on who it was, but that was back twenty thirty years ago now. We have a lot about the big dog. Robinson wasn't Glenn Big Dog Robinson. I think that's exactly it was. I. Think Herb Kohl was the owner of the Milwaukee Bucks. I appreciate you bail me out there with the explanation I think it was Glenn Big Dog Robinson scale. He was one of the guys before the rookie scale contract. I'd instituted that was one of the reasons the rookie scale contract instituted because of that time the number one pick in the draft or even the top couple picks in the draft came into league is some of the highest paid players in. The League so you imagine any rookie especially, this year's draft my goodness in two thousand twenty where the uncertainty of the top of the draft imagine if Anthony Edwards Lamelo ball or James Wiseman whoever goes number one if those guys came in and they were making money that was in the range of Lebron James and Chris Paul and Russell. Westbrook and these veterans stars that happened in the NBA back in. The day that happened recently in the NFL and then in the NFL the looked at it. So wait a minute why are we paying James Winston Sam Bradford with these guys more than Tom Brady and drew brees that doesn't make sense you know. So that changes been I think a good one because you know putting that amount of money in rookie stance but especially scalp putting that amount of pressure on. Them where the highest paid players in the League from day one, I think that can have a detrimental effect. So good changes. By the NBA, in the NFL scale, we've been jazz heavy on this show. Obviously, we weren't aware of this morning of the news it was about to break with the sale, but let's get stick with the time get into the roster because they are an interesting team last year. They had a very good regular season they finished forty, four and twenty eight. To sixty one percent winning percentage gal. That was six in the western. conference. In the playoffs they surprised you and especially through the first four games of the series we thought without Bogdanovich they'd be in trouble scowl they were leading the Denver Nuggets three one before Denver had the historic comeback flip the script and then Utah, lost in excruciating fat fashion with Mike. Conley three point runner from the left wing running out as the buzzer expired that shot would have sent them through to the next round and playing the clippers in the second the shot goes out and instead the. Denver Nuggets went through. But scale they have some interesting decisions first and foremost I think this one's pretty easy. But let me ask you this is the form of a question scale if you were Ryan Smith in one or the Utah Jazz and Quin night on the sidelines especially Dennis Lindsey and the guys in the Front Office led by Justin Zanuck David Moore way would you give Donovan Mitchell a five-year Max extension which the jazz are eligible now to do as soon as the off season starts That's easy. That's an easy one right I'm seeing is wrong. I love to hear your opinion. You're the guy that does this but I would think that that's open and shut. How much can we are you? Okay. All right. Yeah, I think there are a few in this year's rookie class that are no brainers. Donovan Mitchell is one of them to do the five-year Max Extension Jason Tatum in Boston is another I put Bam out of bio in Miami in that category difference with those three teams I'll put Mitchell and tatum on one side and bio, and the other is the heat or a cap space team in twenty, twenty one, they want to preserve that space. So I think we've talked about on this show, they're less likely to be eager to do that whereas I think if you're the Boston Celtics led by Danny Ainge and the great staff there or Utah Dennis Lindsay those guys, they have a terrific. Group as well. You say, look, we're not a cap space team next year. So what's our most important priority than our most important priority is getting our young stud whether it's Donovan Mitchell Jason Tatum locked up for as long as possible, and that would be an exciting day for Celtics fans. I've tatum resigns and jazz fans if Mitchell resigns because that means schedule, you have those guys under contractual.

"So sentimental producer Jake Galley will pick out the best ones and Scallon, I will answer them live on this show with that I, bring the store of our show Brian, scale brainy and scale it is the NBA. Off Season but as you know on the calendar there, really never enough season because the news never stops. So we had a show plan for today and we're going to get into some of that later on scall- but breaking news within the last half an hour here, this morning it somewhat of a shock out of Salt Lake, city after thirty, five years of ownership, the Miller family led by the late Larry H. Miller on a bunch of car dealerships and other businesses in and around Salt Lake. Then when he passed away. was survived or you know stewardship of the team was taken over by his wife and son Scall- They've run the Janice for a number of years now as of this morning within the last hour. Adrian. There's a reporting that finally after thirty five years of. The Miller family has sold the Utah Jazz to billionaire Ryan Smith who founded Kwalik scale I know Ryan Smith a little bit. I think it'll be a fantastic owner but anytime, one of the longest tenured owner scale eventually sells the team after almost four decades I'm ownership it is a bit of a shock. All right through. This is the type stuff I. Love. Win. First of all. Do we know the COST OF THE UTAH? Jazz. So this is a great game where we can guess you you already have the number. Yeah let me check real quick I believe it sold for one point six, billion, one, point six, billion plus according to ESPN's eight hundred, ASCII. That's pretty. That's. Pretty. Decent. So with the clippers went for two billion now, that's an LA team. This is this is like a this is huge for the NBA Independent. Don't know if there's going to be fans they sell the team for one point, six billion dollars Kudos to them I want to ask you rhyme. Because from my perspective as a player, it doesn't really matter I know that I let me I. If there's a new ownership whether it's good or bad at the time when there's a change I don't know I don't know at the time as a player wetter. What's going to change I? Do know that the Miller family did a great job. I thought the Utah Jazz run over the course of my time in the NBA. I, always talk to those guys for a small market team. I thought they did. A really good job of getting the right guy developing the right guys not giving up on young players taking on certain players and I think that's what you kind of have to do as a small market team. But from my perspective, it doesn't change that much until I get to know the new owners right. But from your perspective, what happens now like our coaches on edge our front office staff on edge. Is that type of stop start to come into play because I would assume that if you. Buy A team, there's GonNa be a little bit of I wanNA run in a certain way. You think are the guys who work for the jazz from let's go basketball ops right outside of players you think those guys are wondering how this thing is going to play out. Well, he asked me the tough questions scale always your scalp als- I get my thinking cap on a dive into this because I know Ryan Smith a little bit personally I think he's going to do a fantastic job. He becomes one of the youngest owners in the NBA he is only forty years old as I mentioned he and his father and his brother started aquatics, data software companies scowl they sold that company for a reported eight billion about two years ago now. So he is young, he is wealthy is energetic he is creative and. This is a lifelong dream for him. Ryan Smith has been a Utah Jazz fan he lives in the Salt Lake City area. He looked at buying other NBA teams as well. But the one he really wanted as anybody would want if they had the means to do so is the team that most passionate about their hometown team that they grew up rooting for and where they currently live in for Ryan Smith the Utah Jazz in Salt. Lake City so I think he's going to do a tremendous job scall- to answer your question. You know normally when there is an ownership change there is some trepidation. There may be some trepidation among the Front Office and coaching staff. I do nothing that's going to be the case with Utah as you mentioned been one of the most stable organizations in the entire NBA when you and I talk about the best franchises I, think the I teams out of our mouth usually the San Antonio. Spurs. The Miami Heat the Boston Celtics. What. But the Utah Jazz right there for me scale they don't take take a back seat to anybody they've had stability at the top of their organization with Kevin. O'Connor. Longtime, GM, they're trying to Lindsey a now he has Justin Zanuck and David Moore way helping him in the front office. And then think stability on the sidelines scale from Jerry Sloan. Tyrone Corbin was the one. Blip, on that, we're tycoon was there for a short period of time but now Quin Snyder's there and it looks like he'll be there for a long time. So that is one of the best run franchises in the League Scalp and let me put it this way when I was out for the past couple of years you know keeping in mind I worked in NBA Office for fifteen plus years but only.

"She he's basically been a graduate assistant this year learning to coach learning to teach watching helping coaches Douin video allow Rudy Tomjanovich we'd getting back to a few core cyncial things and seeing how teams function and he was interesting because we were really worried about the possibilities this year in the thing they kept saying his dad. These guys are good guys. They're unselfish, and you know, unselfish good guys. You know, things can everybody talks about you know, the psalm being greater than the parts. And really if you think about it that's nonsense. What happens is when you have unselfishness and character, you can be everything that you can be you can reach your full. Essential. You know?
