Udonis Haslem Signs for 19th Season With Miami Heat

"There, but he is Still there. Madonna's Haslem, now officially back with the Miami Heat. Signed another contract with the heat so he will return for 1/19 season in Miami, a one year deal worth about 2.8 million. It's the 10th contract he has signed with Miami coach Erik Spoelstra considers him essential for a number of reasons, including the example he sets in practice. Which is where hassle gets most of his action. He's appeared in just five games in the past two seasons. Just one This past season, But the 41 year old would become just the fifth player to spend an entire career of at least 19 years with one franchise. Dirk Nowitzki spent all 21 in Dallas, Kobe Bryant spent 20 with the Lakers. Tim Duncan 19 seasons with the Spurs and John Stockton, 19 with the Utah Jazz SportsCenter all night,

Nigeria Wins Historic Upset Over Team U.S.A. In Olympic Exhibition

"Men's Olympic basketball is up to eat. Well, um, it didn't start off well over the weekend, they had their first exhibition game against Nigeria in they lost What? 92 87. Team USA goes down, So we got that going for us. Wait a minute. Isn't Kevin Durant on that team? The guy that carry the Brooklyn Nets on his back. Of course. Kevin Durant. Bradley Beal Bam out of bio. Draymond Green Game. Dollar is on their Jayson Tatum. They've got a pretty good lineup. So they lost to Nigeria. Wait a minute. There's some Nigerian players who are actually NBA players. Right there are and there are a few NBA players missing from that team that are still playing in the finals. No Djourou HOLIDAY. No Chris Middleton know Devin Booker. But the Nigerian squad does have three guys from the Miami Heat roster. Also one of the Sacramento Kings, a guy for the Minnesota Timberwolves and one of Donovan Mitchell's teammates with the Utah Jazz. Good for them. Congratulations, Nigeria. I think they taught a valuable lesson to our Guys on USA team that always thinks it's going to just steamroll everybody. I hope so. Because the last time the U. S, the U. S men's national team lost an exhibition game. They finished seventh in the feeble World Cup just a couple of years ago, so Hopefully they right the ship and we don't have one of those performances in the Olympics.

"Get that cap space code. Let them know you came from us. How about some of these other these other freeze so we can start with their guys so i wouldn't be son to see blake griffin back. I think that ito he's unlike dinwiddie. Blake griffin made plenty of money in his career and eat. You know he can do whatever the hell he wants. Blake griffin wants. Wants bigger pill. The he gave up fifty million dollars to come here and compete for a championship. So it seems pretty clear that he doesn't really care about getting you know an extra three million dollars or something like i. I could see him just coming back could see it too and you would want griffin a one year minimum because that way. The league subsidizes a lot of it. And that also matters for the tax a two year like the market with the lakers last year would actually cost the nets shitload more money also griffin could block. A trade wanted to a with that. The ongoing question of whether jeff green will ever make more than the minimum again will be present here if if he wants to be more than the minimum. I my instinct is for the same financial reasons abroad. It before. it probably won't be brooklyn. Maybe brooklyn would be willing to stomach the like the non bird one hundred and twenty percent with with green just because he fills a role for them and kind of a hard one to find for that kind of price point and everybody else. I think you. I would be fine with with walking away from mike james you either way. He's gotta go. Go anywhere on. Taylor johnson matthey. Tlc if he wants to go back the minimum. I think that's totally right. I mean if a guy like teals the plates minute but to me. I'm willing to just try to cycle through on some other minimum salary slots with guys who might eventually be able to contribute in the playoffs. They've got a non guaranteed for next year for one point. Seven million with allison johnson. And i guess he guarantees on september fourth so yes will get a chance to see what he looks like. He's been there for a while. Obviously you just. I'm just not sure how it is that he's going to be able to contribute to a playoff level team. And so i think at that point you know. They don't need developmental guys at this point. Maybe they'd be like his shooting could be better. He's got two more non-guaranteed years but i think Well yeah actually his guarantee date. Is you know it's only one hundred. Two hundred thousand dollars all the way up until beleaguered cut date so you know maybe you keep them around And see if he wants to be on the end of the roster. But i still i mean i'm just bringing in every vat minimum guy that i can i your garrett temple's avery bradley i'm sure they'll go with like some days. I would like to see these guys. Get another point guard option to replace james though. I think they really need that for the regular season. Just to kind of keep everyone healthy and On the odd chance that james harden or kyrie irving could miss a game or two one challenge. Though is that there really. Aren't that many clear-cut roster worthy players. Who also are clear. Cut for the minimum. Maybe somebody like cory. Joseph r home. Netto be an option there. You know who. Actually he's not really a point guard but he is like a few of these skills that i would consider bring in if he's healthy is dante exum because he also you know he's got some ball skills but he also has like that perimeter defense and athleticism that they could use But yeah. I mean you're jeff teague zero ish smith Whoever these guys kind of fall through the cracks a little bit Cory joseph howell natto. The i wouldn't wanna spend anything above the minimum on my tax level. I mean that's gotta be reserved more for more versatile wing guys to me but Those are the type of guys. You're looking at brad wanamaker as well. So and then so. The same list of guys were talking about with the jazz earlier. andrea wool dala. Trevor aretha otto porter attacker knew. Yeah that'll be the bucks. Have full bird rights on him now. I would be shocked. If they don't just get him back they can offer him. I wouldn't i think he j. tucker is unrestricted. He can do whatever the hell he wants. And it wouldn't stunned me. If he'd like to play for the play for the nuts he would also really like to make sure. It seems like he needs to get more more shoes. S- collection is minimum. Yeah i mean so. Would the dream scenario of like realistic dreams be a tomb for the for the taxpayer mid level. Oh surely yeah. I think it'd be the tomb is going to have his pick of the litter for the taxpayer money. I think he not well yeah. It's just a question whether you want to take it Because he he just got stretched he didn't even have to buy out. Yeah you know the. Maybe i think it'd be. There's someone the minimum. I think it'd be good for them to add one kind of traditional burly center just to doing the idea like the warriors and so many other teams. If you want guys that can do different things. Deadman i think would be. Maybe my favorite of those potential guys who could who might accept the minimum. I think you'd want someone who could at least like pretend to guard jaanus that situation. Yeah but we'll see. I would love bub on this team. Oh that'd be soa basic just put poison zone Actually you know who who i think would be an interesting one of the i would imagine. New york would be more interested in retaining as taj gibson. Lamport new york brooklyn native. Actually i think in fact but we'll see this'll be an interesting. What types of players they bring in on these minimums as obviously in a leap destination will be fascinating to on the ever. Present discussion of whether katie enrich climate. Or sean marks are running things or not. 'cause i'm sure like all of these players who can get some personnel power. They're going to just overemphasize bring in some vet but eight blake griffin. Actually worked out better than i thought he would for them. So what was it also. Is there somebody else from the. Oh seven oh eight sonics can that they can bring in here. I mean they are is is your is your call have available This is a very quick aside. But how would that sears. Milwaukee of if lamarcus aldridge didn't after retire. Yeah i mean it would have helped them when you would been somewhat of a challenge. But i think that would have made it less likely to do an attorney bruce brown and i think overall that it would would have hurt them. You would have helped them. Probably a offensively space outlet as a little bit more. I don't know or like yeah or at least even just to be like on the games when they had nobody else. All right. we're gonna throw to lamarcus in the post here just to get like a little just something else. Some other kind of maybe more viable non durant minutes in some of those limited. Yuck getting him a little bit more rest could help anyway. That's probably enough. Also i see rudy gay ending up here. That's like kind of the the veteran type that they don't need help but he could also like you could just replace jeff green but those guys are agrees. Got a little bit more in terms of ball skills but and both of them are pretty pretty. Done defensively at this point. But i think that's all i've gotten these guys anything else. You wanted to really emphasize. Now i will. That will do it for today. Catchall tomorrow you all heard me talk many times about my wife here on the show. You might recall that. She's a yoga teacher. And i wanted to let you know that she's starting her own streaming service called yoga with ashland. As that's how you spell it and if you enjoy our meticulous data oriented approach here on dunked on either you or a.

"What about an something like this. Joe ingles abby volume. Move on from favors. Joe ingles and twenty twenty four. I not incredibly well protected to oklahoma city for logan stewart. What about some of the Not even necessarily that guy. That gets the more spending flexibility. They could also probably at least get into where out if they could use the full emily but they can at least use the taxpayer. Emily at that point George obviously gives them a an element. They desperately need with more athleticism than we heard three point shooting and a lot of that conception. But you don't you. You could put royce o.'neil on the bench then if you wanted to or if you know just getting killed by the other team defensively you could go with. O.'neil endured at the three in the four take bogdanovich out Have conley and mitchell in the back court. And then also probably. Joe ingles appeals oklahoma city. Because he's another one of these guys where they could move him again to get more later as they've been doing what do you think of that type of a consumption i like it. I think that the the reason somebody like door works really well and i think this is kind of in a way as a tiebreaker. Is the amount of team control like the so. It's not just a rent leave. It was a rental for for utah. Especially because almost rentals that are worth playing for. The jazz are going to make more money at some point in your term but door two more years at a reasonable rate and for for oklahoma city. I think the the thought behind it is ingles. And somebody that you could flip again. You know so so. You're not just getting a first for now that you're maybe getting maybe not a first for ingles. But you're getting something decent or you could use it as easy filler. Positive value filler. In a in a different salary dump that kind of trade would would also be interesting so it would take away some of what makes the jasper. But i also think that with a little bit of time door could potentially work work with the turn and do and do a good job but also i think the point that you're getting at is particularly notable one which is what the jazz do works but it also. I think that you you need to be able to do more. Things do different things if the goal is to win a championship or makes some serious noise towards winning a championship. Maybe and because they just. I think their biggest the offense. There's just no way to get the offense better like dave. Dave completely maxed out on the offensive side of the ball. And you just yeah the switching things a little bit of a problem but you're not gonna move on from rudy gobert. I think that his the criticism of him is going a little bit far even as someone who said. Hey maybe this guy's respective in the playoffs and that's the case obviously faced one of the worst possible matches. But you're gonna face a matchup like if you wanna win a championship at some point at least in most of your this year Maybe not because everyone is injured. But i mean i in most years you have to base a team like that and then but obviously if you're gonna space out go bayer and then you're getting blown by in the perimeter. That's all i think we learned that sawyer. Getting more athletic on the perimeter that to me is the number one that you need and you just gotta be like all right. You know if we take a little bit hit on on offense. That's okay. We just think that donovan mitchell can be that guy and mike conley. You'll be healthy next year. We hope and just hope that the offensive part of it works out because they they. I mean with the amount of shooting that they have still pretty good right and mitchell was was fantastic in these playoffs even with the ankle issue another thought. Though is i think if you could do a similar. Consumption of that with clarkson like his value will never be higher. So i think that like moving him right now would be a great sell high move because he's another guy who just already got hot a couple of times in the playoffs but he's someone who really beats bad defense. Getting into the lane with his floaters he can't pass. He's gotten better as defensive player but still not able to defend one on one. That was a big problem though. It also leaves some room to bring in a little bit more of a traditional backup point guard type to just reduce the burden on conley. A little bit and you know if he gets injured. You can still not have to play mitchell at the one in. Have him to literally everything for you. An ingles was supposed to provide some of that value. But i think you know in the playoffs. He just didn't it. Switching joing goals each just completely taken out of the game at this point you know honestly moving on from clarkston ingles and favors like all three of them. Wouldn't be crazy to me just in an effort to get more athletic but still maintain the core identity of what they were doing in the starting lineup But it just depends what those guys values. I think it's worthwhile at this juncture to go through something else. Because i'm sure this is dennis. Lindsey in the front office are going to. Which is if. Mike conley is elsewhere for whatever reason whether that is he just wants to be somewhere else. The jazz can't get the money right there. All sorts of things might connolly's an unrestricted free agent. He seems happy and utah. He didn't technically choose to go there. You know he was traded by the memphis grizzlies. So let's say conley is elsewhere the jazz then you know maybe it could be structured as a sign and trade so they get a trade exception. That is something utah would like to do. But maybe maybe either team plays ball. Maybe they don't as we said as i brought up before the jazz are aren't really great on sweeteners and teams. Don't really do that as pure charity. that would be one way theoretically they could get a trade exception for pretty much value his contract signing we cap space and everything else But let's say so we talk maybe about those but the more likely thing is that then in that circumstance utah gets the mid level to work with maybe not even still the full mid-level because we brought up how close they are to tax line. So let's say they have to find a point guard in that they would probably have a strong sales pitch for guys in that price range but they also wouldn't be able to offer more than that pressuring..

rudy gobert Mike conley Lindsey mike conley George next year oklahoma Joe ingles emily mitchell royce o.'neil Emily Dave O.'neil connolly clarkson donovan mitchell dave conley bogdanovich

"He would play and they would always get lit up and so he he may not be the guy who can you know really be like a great defensive anchor but i think he can be a reasonable. I mean he could even be your twenty minute game starting center on some team. That had some better defensive pieces around the than utah does where you're not relying on him to be rudy gobert when really go bears out of the game in this defensive system. Let's talk about the other. I mean so. I would join those who we both picked six minutes here. I would say that. He has positive value at thirteen million for next season. Ingles is getting a little bit long in the tooth angles at this point. He's thirty three. He'll turn thirty four before the start of next year. But i mean he shot ridiculously this year. Replace capable defense and forward. I mean in the regular season. The playoffs the playoffs. He might just be too bad Shirt and so and ingles he. Can you know. I love him like necessarily creating for himself. He also fits beautifully jazz offense. You wonder how some of those things would work a little bit differently but being forward sized means that you could fit in a lot of other places that that a like six foot four dude cannot and so i think if they if ingles was england's in some ways is the he's the lightest lift because he both has the shortest contract and they're like there's so many teams that could just use somebody in their forward rotation and so could do that but those places important role the jazz and then also ingles is a part of the reason why he's so important here is that he is a more logical starter replacement. For almost anybody then clarkson in is because if you know if race of neal's out or mcdonagh's out or if mitchell mcconnell you're out i think that he is the more logical fit than carson for those for those situations and odds are you know. The jazz stayed remarkably healthy this year. Odds are you're going to have a lot of points during the season when somebody can't play. So here's conception that i'm thinking joe ingles and i. This is after already getting off a favors. Hopefully you don't do the waste versus made. It's the number thirty Or or a future i. They've got they've got that option to write. The and a trading partner would probably be more interested in in a first available draft which almost certainly will be twenty twenty four. they're The pick deo to memphis is top six protected next year. So that almost certainly will go So you're probably looking at twenty twenty. Four i if you trade a future one. It was about a year ago. Now that there is that massive shortage of toilet paper. Remember that even still. It seems like you can't get as much as you might want to at the store and that shed some light for me on the idea that toilet paper is not very environmentally friendly. The over twenty seven thousand trees are cut down each day to make toilet paper. And that's why now i use real. It's one hundred percent. Bamboo toilet paper. Bamboo grows faster than trees. It doesn't need to be replanted. And it's just a more sustainable material overawed three ply making it both soft and strong. Even the tape is plastic. Free as of course is the rest of their packaging and every role purchase helps fund access to clean toilets for the two point. Four billion people who currently have to defecate outside. So it's good for you. It's good for the environment. It gets sent right to your house which is awesome with free shipping. So you don't have to take up ninety five percent of the room in your shopping cart just with toilet paper. No reason not to give it a try listeners of dunked on get ten percent off their first order with the promo code cap space.

thirteen million mitchell mcconnell ten percent six minutes rudy gobert joe ingles one hundred percent twenty minute mcdonagh ninety five percent thirty four carson twenty twenty clarkson thirty three over twenty seven thousand tre this year each day both first order

"Maybe there'd be a non guarantee the i maybe i'll be surprised. It'll be less than that but i mean he's still really good like he made the all star team the street. He's got this hamstring issue. I mean maybe some teams would be scared off by that aspect that it does seem to be kind of a chronic thing for him now but I i think you know. Maybe that's a little bit less than the first years but that seems like i want to count being much less so i'd how do they create more room than other because mike conley is a bigger priority than the other guys. How do they create the room other than by. Just not reciting mike. It's difficult because we'll assume bear and mitchell are absolutely unequivocally locked in and they should be so then. It's the only other players that make more than five million dollars for the jazz are bouillon bogdonovich. After this you know so starting next year two years thirty eight million left. Joe ingles one year thirteen member. He's extended a couple of times. Clarkson is the second year of his deal. He'll make twelve point for favors seven royce. O.'neil a and clarkson by the way has twelve thirteen and then a player option for fourteen over the next three years favors also as a player option for twenty two twenty three at just over ten billion and and this is exactly why i went so crazy when the jazz gave favors in clarkston much money also for such a long time. Last offseason is that there was this we already knew about connolly's pending regency then giving those players a combined twenty million in separate decisions but you can think of it together because they're same time that twenty million matters a whole hell of a lot right now if v let's say fifteen million is because derrick favors is a negative value contract. I don't know that there'd be many people who disagree with that about ten million a year for two years and carson sixth man of the year easier do something but also plays a really important role on the jazz. So yes it. I would guess that if you could wave a magic one. The easiest way to do this. The best way to do in terms of the jazz quality would be find a home for derrick favors because maybe first round pick from two thousand twenty two okay as buki could step into some of that role. Maybe you could get. You could get a senator tony bradley. A free agent. Danny badly a free agent like you could get somebody for the minimum. You could could do all those sorts of things. But i you know. I don't think that's going to be going to be easy. And what further complicates that is so if people agree with me and i think they like the general andrews will and jazz would need to give up something in order to get off of favors twenty million roughly two years. They don't have a lot of great sweeteners. so in terms of second round picks the jazz. Only they don't have a second until twenty five and then they have their twenty five and twenty six twenty seven so that's a lot out. They also the jazz also have their own. I this year. But oh in a likelihood there twenty twenty two. I i think giving up a first for to get to offload der favors is way too much but maybe if you get somebody in that deal that can also help you know. There are other ways to present up so it's difficult and it's also like with favors not being an expiring contract. You can't necessarily do the maury. I always think vigil maury the murray trick of stay over the tax by more than you want to pay and then find a taker because favors money. It's harder to find that in the end during season than it is in the offseason. Actually i'm not so sure that favors i mean i think it's it's gotta be it's gotta be one of three guys we're going to go. Clarkston ingles or favorites. Those are the three one of those guys that they're going to need to find a way to move and move without taking back cements annual salary now of course that throws in the fact that they also need some stuff on this team to which will get to. But you'll favors. it's not you know. I know he didn't play all that well at times this year and you wonder about how many minutes he can play. But you know robin lopez in last year's free agent market. When i think they're honestly were probably more centers available. Got what was it. One year seven million. I agree it's negative value. I think you know with you. Mentioned the problem with their second rounders But just in a vacuum like a second good second to get off of him. I don't think would be like. I don't think it would be more than that. Necessarily an independent. It could also be something like jazz trade number thirty but don't get something else back like maybe they get the the fortieth pick in this in the in the draft as opposed to like giving the something like that could end working to right and on that traffic. By the way they can trade that at the draft Obviously if you take a guy then that changes but they cannot trade it before the draft. Run there that you can. You can have pick have trade range. Pick make big selection that the other team wants and that won't break the won't break. Zambian doesn't care after the pick is made so if somebody else has we're going to do this that's fine And i agree with you that favors in a basketball sense is probably the most expendable of that group. Because you can. There are options. There's you know there's tony bradley. They could try to go more. The power forward. Get a small guy. Hope as a bouquet can be like your big guy on the second unit but then if you wanna go with the group that's more versatile yo you can bring in kind of that Someone who's a little bit. Maybe markeith morris or even like someone like mohawk class or maybe pneumonia bielema or something. Some of these guys. Who are just going to be more four point five for you some with better defensive than i think favors also in a different setting could look a lot better defensively than he did this year because they just had absolutely zero defense around him on that second unit group when.

robin lopez mike conley twenty million tony bradley Joe ingles fifteen million bouillon bogdonovich last year Danny mike fourteen next year Clarkson twenty two mitchell second year bear twenty five twenty six three

"We'll let's begin our offseason outlooks here with the utah jazz and the jazz wonderful regular season sort of regular season. That is really as good as any team could have a essentially when you look at some of the advanced numbers. They fell off late with some of the injuries. But obviously a team that is poised to be very solid during the regular season if they have their whole group and if they can keep it together also had a ton of flaws that emerged in the playoffs. Both on defense where. They don't really have many good perimeter defenders and rudy gobert can get spaced out and maybe to a lesser extent. Offense going against the switches. The they did largely score. Pretty well against the clippers overall. So i think probably the place to start here is just with the financial situation for this team. Yeah i think that is a very good place to start. And there are a few non guarantees that that are kind of on the margins but a good rough assumption for the jazz is that they are right around the luxury tax line. If you don't count anything for mike conley so that That includes the thirtieth pick. They have the last pick of the first round. Theoretically could a little bit. They have some non guarantees which we'll talk about later but roughly. That's the line. So so that means any money that they give to my conley to george yang that pushes them over the tax and it appears that owner ryan smith new owner ryan. Smith is willing to pay the tax. But as we've discussed so many times in the show there are a lot of different thresholds here and where that line is because for conley the years and the dollars better and so what. How far are they willing to go and also theoretically what else could they cut in case. What conley warrants. Whether that's through you know through their negotiations or talk at other teams or whatever if that's more than you're willing to spend. How do you get from that point to where you wanna be. And we'll see whether there's a reduced luxury tax for you for next year. I don't think that there will be it. Seems like we're on track to just have fans back in arenas have relatively normal income streams again so if mike conley were to get a contract that were twenty million for next year and everyone else stays on the rosser throw in their thirtieth draft pick which they will retain from that conley trade It's going to get pushed over to twenty twenty two. They would be twenty million over the tax and that would lead to a tax payment of forty seven million dollars and a team salary plus tax of two hundred four million dollars so it especially in a market like utah that means that the team will almost certainly lose money at least for that fiscal year next year. I'm going to go ahead and say that. I don't think it's realistic. That the utah jazz will pay that much tax to you. And i hope i'm prove wrong. And perhaps if they had gotten further in the playoffs that might have changed that a little bit but obviously they had a bunch of injuries and stuff to do. You agree with me that we will not see the utah jazz paying a forty five million dollars tax bill. Next i'm open to being proven wrong and smith just took over the team so we have to kind of see what his rules are going to be. But twenty million seems like a lot. Now maybe fifteen you could get into that range where it's a lot more palatable. You don't get all the the ramp ups you know because it's it's a progressive tax structure meaning that the further you are over the line you more you pay dollar you over the line and so that's gonna be a lot for for utah to swallow and what gets sticky here there to kind of different things so one would be okay How many other teams are interested in calmly and what what what kind of numbers doing. But then the other one is in certain circumstances. You could see teams. Say well okay. We're not gonna go. We'll pay you less per year and lower that burden in the immediate especially with the cap eventually going up but we'll do more years but the problem for utah is that they already have go bear in mitchell on these contracts. Dennis lindsay did most of his work for the summer of twenty twenty one last year because they got mitchell and go bear on. These extensions the so. The good thing about that is you. Don't have to worry about them leaving or anything else. But the bad part is that's a lot of money locked up on donovan has two more years at roughly nineteen million year. So calmly gets three to four years at that. Fifteen twenty million. It won't let up until maybe twenty three twenty four. Yeah and honestly twenty million a year. I mean unless. I think it must go for years but i would say three years sixty million. That's like mike conley taking a little bit of a discount on right you know. And i mean whichever of miami or new york or dallas or toronto. If they're still trying to compete and a strikes out on kyle lowry and you know. Maybe some teams prefer spencer dinwiddie and chris. Paul will assume he'll be back in phoenix. But my company you would think would have suitors and it seems clear that he would like to stay in utah if he can but if he's just going to get way more you know shit like he could get two years sixty million instead of three hundred sixty billion pro from the jazz right so and even if you bump now if you could bump mike conley down to fifteen million to start or make some other moves which will discuss then then your tax bills like connie manageable for it seemed like for the vast majority teams that are not the warriors and then the nats and maybe a couple of others who just haven't been in the position to pay it yet but might be a will find out what the lakers pursued that fifteen million over the tax seems like a kind of a default hard cap so that would just give them a team salary plus tax one hundred eighty two million so by five million dollars less. You're gonna save over twenty million dollars in actual cash. it's again it's just. It's really hard to justify that type of marginal cost of so pencil. In mike conley though for i mean i think twenty million over three years you know..

Dennis lindsay Paul fifteen million twenty million three next year kyle lowry new york nineteen million rudy gobert Fifteen twenty million miami toronto three hundred sixty billion phoenix four years george yang donovan fifteen chris

Well he didn't just blame it on. Carmelo anthony lack of leadership. He blamed it on everyone but himself. He blamed it on the new york media. He blamed carmelo anthony. He blamed derek fisher. Although there fisher. Does you know we love fisher on here. But he does deserve that one but he blamed on like five different people anyone but him he said. I should have coached the team but physically couldn't do it from a health perspective. I mean dog. You know what. I mean like the greatest coach of all time just because you weren't a good gm. We're not all good at everything. So i would say big deal only because he just like let it out on everybody but himself i feel like i got a glimpse into who he is as a coach to like. I always wondered if he fully appreciated how blessed he was to coach the men that he coached and to me. I'm not saying this is definitive but for me when you show an inability to take responsibilities for your thoughts right that suggest you have an ability to take too much credit for your successes correct. "Some of those guys played some for the knicks in the late nineties and early two thousand finally ninety seven we We broke through and we wanted the in the conference finals in played the balls in and we lost a. We came back again. And you know we ready to go. We ended up having the best record in ninety. Eight in the ninety seven. Ninety eight season had home court advantage against the bulls but ended up losing two home games and Obviously the last dance was well put together even though it focuses more on the bulls as it. Should you know having gone through that and had to compete against michael jordan. And knowing that the reason. I'm still chasing a ring today. You know my personal. My personal opinion is that he is the greatest that reply and it'd be hard to change my mind over that but that takes nothing away from the great players were seeing today to takes nothing away from the fact that lebron james is is a great player and a great ambassador for our game. But when you come this close to a championship in jordan takes twice. It's very hard for me to imagine anybody else beyond the greatest our really funny in thinking about of course how you ended up with that with the jordan but in general it is incredibly important to think about the jazz not just as those two finals. Finals teams that went to the finals but the teams before that that led to that point the build up. And that's what's so interesting. is baseball. storing it. Thank you so much for being so exacting in every single detail every single season because it really does painting a picture of the jazz as more than those two years in seeing their whole history in its entirety. Kind of moving over obviously have to jazz. You had gone to the nuggets on what you it's funny show before he's he's come on the show and spoke really highly of his jazz a years without the nuggets. Obviously during that time period that you were there that one six almost everyone when they when they see the the years is two thousand three. Because that's that's we'll be. Everyone calls v draft. You're a big part of the draft in eighty four and the draft two thousand and three and everyone kind of always talks about which was the draft. Which one would you take. I'm curious being that are being poverty in the draft to cornell anthony as a team that drafted john stockton draft. Well you know it's pretty hard you know when you look back in we say you know draft. Obviously stockton's in that graph. You know there were other Really good players. You know that came out in the draft. Charles barkley i think was in that draft. It's stockton zan but at the time you know. We were focused on when i was in denver in two thousand and three obviously brian carmelo. And then people have to mention darko. Milicic qassim was a factor. Had detroit not taken him number two. You know then a lot of history would have been rewritten to. So darko went second. We will fortunate enough to get camello. You know with the nuggets and then you know. We thought that there was divide. We said yeah..

He had a scouting service for colleges called burke of us and were they hire outside scouts. And anytime. I had a chance. I would go with bill. He sorted taught me the ins and outs of scouting what they were looking for both from a exit. Oh stamp point and from player personnel standpoint. And so i just kept trying to as much as i could on the basketball side while i was working on the business side and in nineteen eighty seven frank. Layden was the coach and general manager team. And he said you know. I know you've always wanted to get the basketball. And i think i'm gonna hire a video guy and he said you know. I could hire a coach with more experience. But you know you you've showed a lot of interest in our give you a crack at it and so i got into that next thing. I was made an assistant coach and You know mainly concentrating on scouting the upcoming teams in the opponents and still doing video work. That's kind of how i got into basketball. And from there they said well. You've done a good job here now. We need help in the personnel department. Could you go out scouts. So i took on an additional title director scouting added to my sister coaching title. And did that took two thousand one when benn ver noggin. "This month's s i. I wrote a profile of jason tatum boston's all-star forward who ranks among the best young players in the nba future. Mvp candidate even. He may be an mvp. Can't this season. We spoke for about a half an hour recently. Here is an excerpt from that interview. Your mom is a big reason. Why you're here. She had you at a very young age and made raising you as a single mother. Her top priority. How old were you when you realize the sacrifices your mother was making class with. My mom wanted a time. She was an undergrad toes. No didn't have like babysitter anything. She had me her freshman year of college through nineteen eighty solo. Even graduate school. i remember going to class. Where all the time and just sitting there in being quiet and But at the time it was like this is all on news. More than i knew that we didn't have much more know when i had to go to the neighbor's house the asked to ball food wasn't Older in start going to school talk. Another key is in san. "He did blow off training camp to go clubbing. Whatever he was doing some guys are fine doing it that way. I know obviously not everybody is and i think maybe bradley beal's a little bit more self conscious about how he's going to be perceived in washington if and when he gets traded and maybe he doesn't want to be at his own hand or maybe he wanted to be. Yeah look maybe it's one hundred percent absolute that he truly truly does not want out and he truly wants to ride this out. I just would question whether that's the most rational stance from to have this is not nitpicking. Him is criticizing him. I'm just saying if i were to put myself in his shoes or think about it. Through the prism of any other stars of the last ten years. When you hit your team plateaus. Would you see a dead end. And you're of that caliber. It's only natural. I think totally defensible. To say you know what. Maybe i should go somewhere else. Where averaging thirty thirty five points a game will actually net something other than the tenths place in the eastern conference like. It's totally fine if he wants that. But i think maybe he's hyper conscious of the idea that forcing way will somehow put them in a bad light. But there's there's there's a there's a way a mechanism for players to ask out without making themselves look like the bad guy. It's simply turning down an extension when you're going into the last year of the deal. This is why. Anthony davis kind of screwed it up. When he was trying to force his way out of new orleans by publicly asking for a trade midseason like he could just wait till end of the year and said note the extension forcing the pelicans to do exactly what it was that they did bradley. Beal consider play out this season and say look. I'm not going to sign the extension. I guess we'll see what happens at the end of next year. Which the wizards would not allow to happen. If you're the wizards you simply can't allow an asset like bradley beal to go into the walk year of his contract without guarantees. He's going to be there long term. He becomes the guy. You're going to trade so there's a pathway bradley beal to continue to look like the good guy in the situation and ultimately get exactly what he wants. Yeah and look maybe there's some miracle in the offing here. Maybe the wizards pull rabbit out of a hat. And there's some amazing trade they pull off. Maybe a westbrook does find the fountain of youth and he looked. He looked like his old self the other night. But you know he's gotta be able to do that. Game in game out in the two of them have to be at their peak together all the time. Maybe retouching mora takes the leap and denny omnia develops really quick. Like maybe maybe maybe. But i'm sorry. I don't see it and i i i will. I will never until the was provoke. Otherwise i believe that they're best password and his best path forward is probably a trade. If you get a sweetheart deal. If you can get the paul george or anthony davis of deal with players picks and set yourself up for the future and get bill to a team where he's got a more developed roster around him and can contend then that's still seems to me like the best solution for everybody i get it. It's not easy. It's not as if bradley beal and you love where you're playing. It's not as if you're the wizards who already just had to make the very difficult decision to trade..

"Whether i think he he will eventually reach that point. I'd say given where the nba is given the last ten years give player empowerment given bradley beal's age twenty-seven sick of his prime given where wizar- i'd say as i've said many times like absolutely positively i think he should one out. I think he'd be better off somewhere else. I think the wizards would probably be better off. Because if they can get the right deal back for him they can. They can rebuild for the future. And i think they're kind of stuck but i'm not criticizing him for not doing that. They give he wants to stay. That's his prerogative fine. I don't understand this like that's the one thing about the report. I don't get like he's being picked for choosing to stay. Who's doing that. i'd seen it. I haven't seen it. I haven't seen any of that stuff and look bradley. Beal can look at james harden as being a blueprint for getting what you want. I mean james harden salt his way through an abbreviated. Training camp sleepwalked his way through games when a matter of weeks wound up traded to the location want to be traded to and we'll wind up not only gained play where he wants to play but eventually get his money. You know. the money turned down on that long term extension. If you're bradley beal and let's say hypothetically you think golden state is a good opportunity. You could stop your feet and probably force your way there. You could leak it out through an agent or somebody that you wanna play for the warriors. And you could force the wizards front office to negotiate with you. And i have discussed that potential deal in the past. That's that's a deal. I think makes a lotta sense because the warriors have got wisemen. They've got some draft capital can do some things and put a package together. That might make sense for them to go out and acquire bradley beal. I with you though. I will not criticize the guy for doing the right thing. I thought it did look like he was checked out in the first half of that nets game and i'm curious to see how he looks moving forward like was that just kind of an unexpected comeback. That kind of rekindled his competitive spirit for one game in the second half or was the first half something of a foreshadowing of what's to come with bradley beal because if it is you can source any report. You want your eyes. Don't lie when you're looking at what a guy wants to do their so. I'm curious to see what happens. Moving forward but him being a good soldier. And i'm saying i don't want to be traded. I'm not asked to be traded. I guess you can find anything in the bowels of the internet. That might you might be able to find if you're on social media but i haven't. I haven't seen any of those critiques and listed some of this at least is probably like even if he wanted to be traded. He doesn't want to be put in a position where it looks like. He's the one right. Like some guys are just hyper conscious of their image that way like if if if the day comes where he's going to be traded he'd rather not feel like he is the bad guy some guys don't bite it like james harden clearly did not mind being the bad guy at the end. He did silk. He did drags his way through games..

"You've got five to six teams. That i think are are almost locks right Lakers and clippers or locks jazzar Nuggets are locked. That's four. I think portland's a lock. That's five at the phoenix probable that six. So now you've got Memphis the warriors the rockets spurs and the mavericks. And who knows. Maybe the pelicans turn it around. There's a lot of teams. That are jockeying for those last couple of spots. And i think we all wonder say well. What's the rockets unloaded hard. And that's it. They're done but they've the pretty competitive and you know ball. All the depot christian would like this. This is like a fun team with a bunch of guys who all feel like. They've got something to prove. You know we write off the spurs over year at our own peril the warriors. I'm still not sure. But they've gotten enough from wiseman and enough promising from andrew wiggins big fat asterisk on that statement that you could you know you can't dismiss the warriors so i don't know how much room for error the mavericks have right now and yeah. I think is a very real possibility that they're going gonna miss. The playoffs can't kick it all the warriors i think with steph and those guys. They're i think they'll find their way into the playoffs. So that put the mavericks in a not a great position. They don't get this thing together of the next ten eleven games. Let me finish with the bradley beal stuff earlier. this week. Athletic reported that bradley beal did not want to be traded flies in the face of some of the video that surfaced on twitter over the last couple of days specifically the first half of the wizards game against a brooklyn where bill like wanted to be anywhere but there if i was watching just that first half hour it looked like bradley. Beal was taking a page of james harden playbook where hardened kinda sleepwalked his way through the last few games in houston and forced the deal. Now watch the whole game. Is you have to. The wizards had a incredible comeback spearheaded in part by bill and russell westbrook and wound up beating the nets in that game. But you left that game if you're watching the situation you can't help but think that bradley beal only a finite number of amount of time left in wash now. This report comes out. And i've no reason dispute the report but i don't know howard like i can't see bradley beal being in washington much past if not the trade deadline than next summer at the latest..

"You want to say well there. Aren't that many like six feet guards. Six foot tall guards who have led their teams to achieve. If you want to go historic and and the kind of star you need. I mean was obviously for decades. The nba was ruled by big men. Right it was shocking kareem and wiltz and akeem and and you could like jordan changed that of course but in the modern game. It's like the mutant ford's right like these guys like who were built like power. Forwards are somewhere between florida power forward but have ball handling skills and could do everything. Kawhi leonard and kevin durant and lebron james. Yeah if you have one of those guys ka donovan. Mitchell cannot great inches and get a seven foot wingspan tomorrow. He cannot become kevin durant lebron or co why he becomes steph curry. But that's not. That's not the way to judge donovan mitchell. As as a as a as a guy who can potentially team to a to a or not if shacks critique were of what done mitchell was doing the way he conducted himself the way he worked the way. He competed fine. But it's more this like ambiguous kind of doesn't have what it takes like. And you're right chris to they have a second star. But there's second stores rudy gobert. He's essentially defensive specialist apologies to utah. I know nobody wants to hear that. Rubare is not an offensive player because sometimes he puts up seventeen or twenty points in a game. He's not a goto offense of player and most one two punches in nba history when we talk about championship. Teams are are two elite offensive players. Rudy gobert is as an a fine offensive. Something he's an option. He is among your options. He is not a go-to guy. It's not the same and they don't have that second guy. Chris and i don't if they'll get that second guy because it is utah. It's not a free agent destination. But that's why i say. Can you do it a different way. Can you build a contender a different way and credit to them. They have built a really phenomenal team. That as you said earlier a punchers chance. There's a thousand reasons. Why protecting your home matters to you for me. Because i travel a lot..

"When joe ingles is out on the floor so i like i think they've got more than a punchers. Chance in a series against the lakers and the clippers. I really do. I really believing in in that. Mix yeah you're right. They still have upside like the defense. We've seen this team be atop defensive team in the nba and the difference between being top six versus number one. You know there's a difference but that's not that's not a big leap task of them. They can get there. I don't know how much more they can get out of the offense. I think the three point shooting can actually sustain to be honest like they so last year they lead in three point percentage at three eighty. And they're at three ninety nine shooting forty percent of the team from three which is insane makes them knocked down. It may come down a little bit. But we've are. They've got a track record of being the top. Three point percentage team in okay. They'll they'll be fine there one way or another but when things slow down the playoffs when it's more half court when defenses key in on your best player and try to take away the things that that you do best. That's what i worry about. The my the reason that teams load up and try to create super teams is because even if you can somehow make lebron a little less efficient. You still got gotta deal with dwayne wade. You know you you shade. Everything toward paul george. Kawhi leonard is going to beat you. You shade everything. That's how it goes. You want to stars even three because teams get really smart and clever in the playoffs. They scheme for you in a way that they don't know regular season and they do everything possible to take away your best guy like that. Was the problem obviously with the rockets so hard and centric right. You're in the regular seasons fine. No one's trying to create a defense to stop the rockets in the regular season but in a seven series. And that's all you got to concentrate on all you gotta stout and all you a plan for. That's what you're doing and you know. Look i. I've always said this and i'll keep saying it. I always want to see teams. That could do it a different way. That don't create that. Don't have to create a super team because there's not enough talent to create a super team so we need an antidote to super teams. And so i would love. See a team like the jazz breakthrough. But i think there's a certain reality there where you're going against paul george and kawhi leonard or lebron d. You know that may be too much to ask of this team. Even if they do everything perfectly..

"Of having all stars like have a regular all star guys. The honor of being called nba all stars. But is it. I mean they really making that much money that off an all star game that it's necessary to go through with it. I mean i guess they are because there's no other reason to do it. There's no other reason to take the risk of bringing dozens of players coaches. Staffers whatnot team employees. Follow these players down to atlanta for this game. Just seems like the nba. I've got plenty of issues. I've had i've written about my issues with the nba. And what they've done kind of with these first couple of months of the season. This is another beef. i have with them. That there's they're doing an all star game when they couldn't satisfy certain obligations by just announcing all stars and. I think it's i don't know about you but i think it's a completely unnecessary risk now. Listen guys should get the honor. And the ballots are out. We will elect all stars. And that's as it should be for for posterity for contract clauses and all kinds of other stuff too you know Bonuses and all that that's fine but the all star game itself look some years so a lot of fun a lot of years. It's pretty crappy. It's a spectacle it's not essentially. When is it fun. Like i don't i maybe the lamenting last year. That was far the ending of the game. Like the event itself. Like who cares. It's just yeah the whole thing. I stopped going years ago. So i i still go for all the schmoozing and all the just being around the nba. But that's fine but like but even that our even that there are better options for that. Like i agree. That's component but you can go summer league supplies. That the even the portsmouth invitational supplies the combine usually supplier other places. You're right look all star weekend. I think you know look. There's the corporate sponsor is all the corporate people they bring in are comprising most of the audience for those things. So it's swag bags when you go for. I've got a lot of really good. I still i still have my nba umbrella from new orleans all star games when like drenched us during the tech seven handed out these free umbrellas. Everybody as they were leaving. I've still got that umbrella. It's it's little tattered. Now but the the the game the dunk contest. Three point shootout. I think if you're a kid or if you're younger like that's still holds lot of allure. I think for guys like you. You've seen way too many of this of these. It's just not as entertaining anymore. But i'm not going to tell the people that they shouldn't find it entertaining so it's fine like it serves its purpose but its let's put it this way. Is it essential during a pandemic you say the nba essential well no but the nba also is the provider of thousands and thousands of jobs. And it's a revenue generator. And so i understand. Bree starting the season nobody. I don't think anybody said don't have an mba. But you're doing it within certain limits that you've already imposed seventy two games instead of eighty-two no fans your they're sacrificing god knows how many hundreds of millions in not having fans there are certain conditions that you believe you have to impose to make this workable and and safe early semi safe and yet still. We've had twenty four games or whatever postponed so far and a lot of gotten sick. So you're you're just ranking levels of essential nece right. The the you've decided to games were important enough because of the money because the jobs because of all that the all star game and all star weekend is completely non essential..

"When you're talking about players who were playing good before the season ended. In calling was one of them. one of the biggest reasons was three point percentage He shot forty two percent during that stretch where his career is thirty six percent US consistently around there so I don't think at this point in his career. He's changed his I. Mean He might get some easier looks off. He's not like the primary guy and it's a lot of catching shoot more often, but a he's suddenly. Bumped up his three point percents by that much but my biggest thing about him is like you said earlier his floaters I mean like that's what my colonies known for and he sh- shooting at a record rate this year for himself on mean, basically author shots are in short mid. And they're dropping worse than they have ever in his career. my theory behind that is you know basically Rudy Gobert versus Marcus all the different Sayer where half the time Gobert a more than half the time. Go Bears Luli, standing six feet next to him with go bears defender right there whereas years prior he has gonzales. Who you know could space it us with three point? Point Line and the mid range where he didn't have to worry about the threat of that other defender and me she's not finishing at the rim, the same which again I think stems to go bear and his lack of spacing, and the go bears defender counters being in the vicinity, definitely frozen off a little bit compared to Gonzales man who's usually out in three point line guarding him. I don't know cody yovany thoughts on Conley. Does comedy I think he definitely has regressed offensively is much stronger closer to that twenty twelve to thirteen season, but I think another aspect of this. That really hurts them. There is now he's playing next to. You is like Jordan Clarkson Donovan Mitchell who aren't specially Clarkson definitely, not strong defenders. Mitchell has its moments, but I wouldn't consider him to be. A, good or really even that impactful defender, whereas when us at the prime of the grizzlies. You guys like Tony Allen next to him, who could read a little bit more havoc on the on the perimeter so I think it's a combination of those two things and when we get to. I definitely want to have a conversation about the ceiling, the team with Mitchell and Gobert the heart of them, but I. Really think that pairing is a big reason for Conway's defensive, slit. One question I have for Connie's offense is I know that. Probably. The bulk of it is just being kind of hurt or maybe like. I don we don't exactly know right, and obviously that's not as fun to talk about. It's good to get out of the way so I'm GonNa get to the fun to talk about where I'm wondering why he still. Goes to the rim so hard. And I think it's because when you have a pick and pop big. You can kinda discharge at the Rim right you don't have to like. You don't have to like slow it down and read the defense and decide ocean. I, take the slaughter, or should I hit the LOB? That's just kind of new decision for him. regardless of whether or not he's hurt. And I just wonder why he can't do that Chris. Paul thing where he gets his manage a little bit kinda stalls. He has the pressure from the floater. If it ever comes back and just kind of waits for go to roll 'cause, there's still a lot of Conley drives were go. Bear is not in like a dozen. UC's behind Conley. And I think you know that's part of the reason. Joe ingles go bare pick and roll works. Joseph Joe Physically can't charge at the rim. you Kinda just stalls with the ball. Let's go bare put pressure on the rim for him, and then makes his decision, and I'm wondering like. Why can't if countless Florida does? Come back a? Why can't you do that in the future? I I think that comparing him to Chris Paul in that moved, he does. That's a really hard level to want him to get to having Chris Paul is the point God for a reason? I think Chris Balls. Even you know. I think he's a little shorter than Communist, probably actually pretty close, but I still think he's a little shorter and I. think he's stronger and stouter than he is. So might be easier for him to get. Get, a a player on his back, so I, I don't necessarily know, but I think that's a key part of it is. You need a bigger face to do that? You need a guy like abroad. James Harden Mike Conley who are much better at snaking control like that. Yeah and I think it's. It's tough to because I. Mean Conley's never really been that guy's career? Who's going to just orchestrate from the mid range and? And do Chris. Paul things I mean I think Chris Paul's always been that kind of player in comedy has always been a good passer. I don't think he's ever been a great passer. That's just my opinion. Obviously, but I feel like. We definitely see that and it it it. It's hurt him like they was talking about. Not, having the tandem I mean he worked with Mark Assault. What is assist is eleventh year in the League Eleventh Wealth Year I. Think he's thirty one or thirty two so I mean what are you work with? Somebody like that and you don't have the diversifying of of offense options around you. That creates a it's. It's really tough to come off and create a different looks for yourself especially. When you're this I think a we can talk, say we don't talk about psychology and the way synapses fire, but you know as as you get older happens less quickly happens less frequently takes a lot more time to to create. Some new memories there in the new memories. What's create like New Habits? Patterns yeah especially. When you're that, it'd be tough to switch that up. But yeah, I agree sky like you'd think with with how things went that they would change things up. But it just hasn't happened. I think we're. Just going to say you can't teach a old conley new tricks, Mark Schindler July. Pretty much. All right go ahead go was going to say that's a three idea for an article or a video or something seeing how Mike Conley to this offense when Marcus wasn't in the game in the past what we do when he had more of A. Not a smart of a passer more spacing center on the court with him. That would be. Unless you guys have anything more to hit on Conley I kinda. WanNa address the the elephant in the room for Utah Fans going forward. Go Bare Mitchell of situation. You guys already. Here for. Two but like to add of ten sized elephant. It's A. It's a baby elephant. So I'm not even really. I mean I guess we can talk about the whole. Situation Between Mitchell and go bear with the whole cove, nineteen and the relationship between them, but I was conscious more interested in I. Mean I guess we can talk about that I, and do you guys think like there is any I? Don't think there's a chemistry issue. I mean off the court Scher when they said it. When they're on the court, you know there are two teams going for the championship at that should not affect them What do you guys like? I'm not like I. Dunno frankly I'm. I'm not super worried about I try not to read too much into stuff like that We just get used to it in Indiana No I think it's May. I think it got overblown because of everything that happened with with grown virus and the way ship blew up on twitter at Rudy Gobert which was absurd, but now he keeps tweeting out dump stuff. Winning gumption is instagram. Saying facts are facts, so yeah, I don't know I think the the whole chemistry issues got got a little bit overblown. I think Gobert kind of feels about Donovan Mitchell. How maybe like? The General Nba community season where it's like as as a primary like a one guy is perfect now he's far from perfect right now. He's learning on the job, but also go bare understands the if he wants to win a championship. It's probably going to be because Donald Mitchell. Gets close to that level like they're not going anywhere without Donovan in my opinion. Are they gonNA find another guy who can replace him I. A especially and we'll get to their caps situation.
