"Right now with the pandemic there's been a lot more people heading out into the back country. I asked caroline. What's the one thing. She hopes people are thinking about as they do that. I hope that People who have questions or that don't agree with the group. We'll just speak up and voice that stuff all the time. i think. that's the probably the biggest thing is just ask questions. Like ask questions constantly before the tour at the tour after the tour like you can really help prevent a lot of mistakes from spiralling by being the person who's just always asking questions yet don't go with the flow and don't be afraid be like the rebellious one or to feel like you're the difficult one like having the difficult one like that saves lives because when you look at avalanche accidents it's not. It's usually not people who didn't have the training or the knowledge. It's usually the human factors and so to be really familiar with the human factors. I definitely take more risks. When i'm skiing with my gopro on or when the camera's rolling have been really. We used to call it when i started kodak courage because everything was shot on film when i started my ski career. Gotta be aware of the kodak courage. It's it's wild now like everyone has their cell phones out all the time. Everyone's in with their three sixty video. And you really have to be careful because that changes risk immensely think about higher actions are gonna look if you die like. How will the accident report read. You know like an that's like your legacy you know that's going to be like a lesson in avalanche classes. And so how do you want that to look. Yeah one of the things. I always think about going out into the back. Country is like what would i have to tell. Their loved ones or their friends totally. Yeah if you had to call someone's parents and tell them that they died like think about that. I mean that's kinda grim but that's the reality but when you tourtelot and you ski a lot. It's easy to get complacent and i think that's another thing we're seeing it's like we're all worried about like all these new people but i think actually a lot of people who've been out in the back country for a long time should also be worried because it's super easy to get complacent when you're very familiar with snowpack and train and a lot of avalanche accidents. We see are very experienced. Teams expert expert level making poor decisions. The blessing of what happened on january. Seventh for us is that it was a good wakeup call like okay. Maybe i was like stepping out a little bit and now i will definitely not be skiing. Interring that is adjacent to our underneath. And he steeper avalanche terrain It definitely made me take a step back for sure which is really get. This episode was produced by stephanie. Joyce and edited by me. "The avalanche. The killed martin was a super rare kind called the glide avalanche in glide avalanches the entire snowpack slides along the ground down the mountain. They're often very large and unlike most avalanches. They're extremely difficult to predict. Martin was a really smart guy he really knew a lot about the mountains and i really respected his level of intelligence and so for that to happen to him. It just gave me a lot of respect for the power of of nature. My family's very academic understanding the scientific part of it is a lot easier than understanding the human factors in the decision making that went into it. And i think it was really hard for me to see my dad. Just go through all the pain and anguish of light. What was he thinking. And go-between anger and grief and yet was really. I mean it still is really heavy and we still miss martin very much. Yeah i can imagine. How did his death change your relationship to the mountains. Well i mean. I still had this childhood dream of becoming a professional skier but it made my track a lot different. You know a lot. More conservative and cautious and careful and what i think bruce. Trumper and other avalanche professionals describe. Is that the average backcountry skier when they begin. They go through a period where they're pretty dangerous and they make somewhat reckless decisions because they're not fully aware of the risk and so they go through that honeymoon period with backcountry skiing. Where they're like woohoo. This is the best thing ever and then they have a close call or an accident and then they bring it back they reel it back in and for me what happened i think is the opposite is that i started from this place of knowing this immense hurt i mean the ultimate pain of losing a family member and a sibling and experiencing that loss on such an intimate level. It really changed. How i started my country career and like how i managed risk and so i just went from this place of like always envisioning the worst case scenario and i tip toed around the country for so many years before i felt confident to go into steeper terrain. Probably like ten years of just tiptoeing around taking baby steps. I wasn't fully committed to being a back countries here instead. Caroline pursued her goal of being a professional skier mostly at the resort. She appeared in advertisements and magazines is a ski model but even though she wasn't spending a lot of time in the backcountry during those years she always had it in the back of her mind in all that time of skiing in bounds and becoming a really good downhill skier. It made it a lot easier to think about managing risk in the back country setting. That's another thing. I try to tell people who want to become good back. Country skiers is like. Don't shy away from honing your skills bounds because you can just into so much more terrain and you can get a sense of it. I did a really good training one day. A long longtime ago with dean cummings at snowbird and he just taught me a lot about like how to ski big lines from island of safety to island of safety and we did this at the resort. but having that really good understanding of terrain. Every day i'd drive up the canyon. I would look for signs of recent avalanches. And i would pay attention to how the snow was on my windshield and was it heavy. Was it light like how did it feel our the winds like it became a part of me and so i would have wanted to skip that. Step that tenure step of just being like a sponge you know and just absorbing it in before i had this big tick list of goals the first big project the put carolina on the map as a professional athlete with skiing all ninety steps detailed in the shooting gallery a guidebook to ski mountaineering in. Utah's wasatch range. It was an impressive feat. Only four people have ever completed all of the dissents but for caroline it in extra hurdle one of the lines. She had to ski. In order to complete the project was the line killed her half brother for those first ten years after he was killed every time i would drive up big cottonwood canyon. I would drive by stairs. Gold and i would just feel a lump in my throat. I mean would feel like physically ill And so i believe it was fifteen years after he died when i skied it and i don't think i could have done it any sooner. I was still really nervous. You know picked a really low avalanche. I mean look. Low risk doesn't mean no risk but You know i called my some of my friends at the utah avalanche center who are forecasters and they were like. Yeah i think it would be a good day so the skin wasn't great but it was super safe for avalanches and so the morning. It was me and my partner and Photographer viagra for and then one other athlete. And it was just one of the most beautiful mornings that i've ever seen in the wasatch and when we got the top i really felt a sense of peace and i felt like it was the right time to do it and it was a part of my grieving process for me like i'm still grieving. It's like been so long and those wounds they don't really. It's always like a scar. But i felt like he was stoked that i was there and that i was doing it and was keeping his memory alive and to me like i think that's one of the best things we can do. Remember people. we love that. We've lost is to honor and celebrate their lives. You know if i passed. I don't want people to forget me. Like i want my life to have mattered. And so for me like martin's life like going there and doing that it was a way to keep his spirit alive. At the top of the episode we talked about lake hartwell country a largely undiscovered region in the mountains of south carolina. That's one of the best adventure playgrounds anywhere. This is a place blessed with unique geography unlike most spots along the appalachian chain which have gently sloping mountains here the elevation plunges more than two thousand feet in less than half a mile the result is the blue ridge escarpment a dramatic feature that the cherokee tribes in the area gave a special name. Thanks is Christina Coleman. America is listening to Fox News. Welcome to the bromance on the radio. My name is Rob Hunter joined by my partner, Mike Russell. Thank you for hanging out with us. This is Arizona's on Lee Craft Beer radio show. And this week we go down the Kabo San Lucas to talk to a man who moved from Colorado to combo to open a brewery. It's called Baja Brewing Company now being distributed right here in Arizona. Join us for this conversation. He lived in Colorado decided to move to Kabul and then open a brewery. We're talking him today on the bromance podcast. His name is Jordan Gardenhire. He is the founder of Baja Brewing Company. And he sent us a care package. Mike Russell. Yeah. Anyway, we are the bromance. He is Mike Russell. My name is Rob Hunter. Thank you for joining us. This care package like legit. It came in a box. You checking out the video? I'm just gonna put it right here on my shoulder and show everybody off. In the box came a bunch of beers that are now going to be ready to be distributed here in the state of Arizona. So this is so fantastic. We got some shirts and we got a cool box. And it is amazing. So each week we pick a beer of the week. Might drink to this week because we have the man himself here. So, Mike, what are we starting with? Today? We're starting with Baja brewing. Of course. Lesser fa. This is their Baja lager. And I am a longer guy. I'm excited about this. I love the can are too by the way you cannot is just crazy. Cool. I love it, And that's what we're jumping into. And Jordan were you showing off that you have shirts over there, Jordan? I'm gonna start this if I could, because let's start talking about the beer and then we'll get into the story. This fear is obviously one of your design. And you said this is the one we should start with. Why is that? Yeah, well, Mike and Rob, Thanks for having me. Yeah, this is ah. This is our easy drinking answer to Mexican mass produced lagers. So really, it's nothing like those. This is full on craft. We had a bunch of hops and Trying to make it a little bit more crisp, and we're not adding any any corn or anything. It's 100%. You know, multiple early, but it's an easy drinking beer and we left there. 4.5%. And I think this is just not only to start with this a good one that I have a few of So that's obviously by design. When you say always like these questions of brewers, we kept it at 4.5%. It almost sounds like you did that on purpose. How did you do that on purpose? Uh, you know, based on the amount of malt that we add to the to the brew we can. We can create any alcohol content. We weigh desire. Almost. I mean, there are upper limits. But on the lower limits, it's pretty easy. So what we're doing here is just adding less mall, which converts the less sugar which converts the less alcohol and that's um you know, that is, by design. You know this specific beer, the ideas that you can. You could have a few Or a ZAY did a few days ago on on the beach had more than a few good. You're down there in Kabo. From the last time I was in Kabul, Sonny. I was just outside of Kabul with old cardinal in the small town that they only had Pacifica light. So I'm talking four days of fishing and all we could drink was Pacifica like it was. It wasn't It wasn't a good situation because you started like sticks. They m and you finish it like four in the evening. And you like this, anyone even buzz because we went through about a case each. And then every 12 can was about. It was a half fill every 12 pack and a half filling. It was something needed to be done down there and God bless you for bringing some good craft down there to the masses. That's so similar to my stories. I came down here and all I was drinking with specific Oh, no, we had regular Pacific. Oh, here in Kabul, But, you know, I don't know how many. I gotta say thousands of those. I probably drink before I bit. The bullet said okay, We're just gonna start making our own because that was once So let's go back to that decision because you're living in Colorado. You're born and raised in the United States and like I'm moving, acabo, So walk us through that decision. Kabul sounds amazing. I've never been but I do love Mexico. Puerto Vallarta. I went to a couple years ago had a fantastic time. Can't wait to get to Kabo. So why that decision and then You drink the Pacific ally. Assuming that ties into men we need some better beer down here. I After college, I was living. I went to see you Go bus, and we You know, I've got a job right out of college student. I thought that was the best thing that could happen last about three months of thinking. It was cool. And another three months of, you know, thinking, huh? What am I gonna do, and Yeah, I didn't last very long. Honestly on, I decided. Well, this whole job thing probably isn't gonna work for me right now. I need a to go figure out what I'm gonna do first. And so I decided what I'm gonna go somewhere and learn Spanish and learn to surf. So those are my goals in life at the time. I was 23 24 great goals. Yeah. Good. The good old days. I mean, that was it was simple. And I ended up in Kabo just sort of randomly. Um and I was going to stay here a year. And then head back. And as time went on, though, I liked it. And it's kind of the typical story of all the other gringos that ended up in places like this, that you go on vacation and you never leave. There's a Jimmy Buffett song about that isn't there for the sake of same thing? Wow. Tell me because I'm a parent. So I've got a got a 15 year old in a 12 year old. So I think if I if I fit the bill See you and I had a friend that you went to see you. So I understand how much that costs going there so especially out of state, And then my kids says, Well, I forget everything I studied. I'm gonna go down good on the Kabul and started Burry. I would most likely go with him or her. But what did your parents what did your parents and would your family say? When you're like I'm sticking to this? I'm down. I'm in. Yeah. I mean, who does what they really thought? Because, you know, they always just kind of supported my shenanigans. Pretty much cars belong, So I have a history of making our decisions and Anyways, after I came down, though, the real answer that question is I was here..

High Avalanche Danger Out West Affects Transportation And Ski Areas

"To another story now. It's been a chaotic couple of weeks in the rocky mountains where large avalanches have closed highways ski resorts a single storm near Salt Lake City. It triggered a record forty eight slides as NPR's Kirk siegler reports. The increased avalanche risk comes at a time when more and more people are hitting the slopes in the high country. God probably Craggy Teton Mountains of North West Wyoming steep and deep Jackson hole is as a magnet for extreme skiers right. They're buddies goading them on on Matt Beauregard. And Rick lawler drop a fifteen foot cliff in this glade. Area called the tower three shits as just a melody honestly. You were just rep around rounded bounce. Skiing inbounds inside. The patrolled boundaries of the ski resort generally thought to be safer when it comes to avalanches. That's because all season skiers. I've been packing this snow down and stabilising it. But Matt Beauregard knows that's no guarantee we've actually triggered small slides on this exact face. They may duck a rope and ski ski out of bounds into the back country. But even here at the resort. They're wearing avalanche transceivers and safety gear. Just in case education's probably the most important thing. Rick here's wearing an air bag for added protection so in the case that he is stuck inside an avalanche you'll be able to pull this cord and hopefully float to the surface inbounds or in the back country. Avalanche danger is high across the mountain west. An unusually snowy early season followed by drought than dry powder. Storms then a punch of heavy wet snow last weekend in Utah. Today's storm dumped six and a half feet in Little Cottonwood Canyon home to the snowbird and Alta resorts awards and it ended up closing little cottonwood for fifty four hours and forty eight. Avalanches were reported one of those hit. The Road Mickey Champion is a forecaster here at the Utah Avalanche Center. She recorded wind speeds up to a hundred miles an hour on Ridge tops that further destabilize the already volatile snowpack in the Wasatch satch mountains. And then you put a big wrong heavy load or a wind load on top of that it just kind of upside down. It's like a pyramid when you take out the Baser Django when you remove one of the pieces says there were no fatalities reported in Utah. But last month skiers were buried and killed in avalanches within patrolled terrain at resorts in California and Idaho. Oh all of this is putting the round. The clock work. People tasked with keeping these mountains safe under the microscope Jackson Hole. Ski Patrol Director Drew Neilan stepping into his bindings above. You can't see it in the fog now. But there's a big cirque above us here and that's Casper Bowl. All and all that terrain is avalanche terrain every morning at dawn before the tram and the Gondolas Starts Spinning Army of Nielsen's patrol or detonating explosives lives to intentionally trigger slides. Now so skiers don't later and some of these can even be detonated remotely thanks to new robot like trolleys that reach even more dangerous surest remote places. Obviously we worry about avalanches coming down into the heavily congested areas. So that's one of our biggest concerns to get that work done early. Another big concern is simply that more. People are venturing out further into areas. They normally wouldn't have thanks to improved equipment. I think people assume that we're able that. We have the ability to completely eliminate the risk of avalanches within the scary. And that's just not the case but avalanche forecasters say along with the increased risk. It comes a new cachet becoming cool to say. You've taken avalanche courses and Dir as prepared as you can be Kirk Siegler N._p._R.. News Jackson Wyoming.
