Immune Boosting, Is It a Bust?

"Can you boost your immune system. Yeah what pitting facts against fighting off infections and this idea that we can pop a pill to boost our immune system. It started exploding during the early days of the pandemic. Tim caufield professor of public health at the university of alberta canada was watching as old took off. It was in the air. You know this idea of immune boosting it was just part of the gestalt own remain so and is the pandemic got worse and worse s s idea grew and grew and it felt like products to boost the immune system was suddenly everywhere. Especially as we've seen all over social media. And tim wanted to know what exactly was the stuff that was getting touted all over the internet so he did what any self respecting academic would do and he started scrolling instagram. And i really did i. I went through hundreds and hundreds of post day for work at the lab for you is getting a coffee and scrolling instagram. And you know. I wish i could say it was it was fancier but that's what i did team and he's tame systematically trolled instagram looking for the trending posts labeled with the hashtag immune booster and there was a lot of the stuff that you'd expect so called superfoods vitamins herbs. Were in the mix too i i saw supplements remain a vitamin d to Zinc and obviously vitamin c. Ginger elderberry echinacea saw a lot of smoothies a lot of smoothies out there and of course all they came with a healthy dose of that influence holier vibe. Tim talked about it without producer. Rose ramllah let me see like the instagram post. The mother of all immune boost instagram posts voted like it would definitely be someone sitting on the beach. Our in the forest they would be in a yoga pose foreshore. They would have a smoothie by the their side asset limits in one hand and magical berries in the other

The Biggest Threats in the Republic Right Now Are Backed by Liberals

"This morning. I'm going to mention it today because it could become the bedrock of the show. Liberalism is a cancer to forest fire. If you're a liberal listening, I'm sorry. You believe in that? I really hope that you will are genuflect and repent for your ideological stain You're trying to impose on the rest of us. If that sounds harsh to hear, I don't give a damn not even a little bit because it's true. The biggest threats to the republic right now are all backed by liberals. Threat number one critical race theory. I mean, think about it right? The United States is such a powerful, incredibly prosperous country, not only the most prosperous country in the history of humankind, I would guess the most prosperous country in the history of any Cynthia being anywhere in the cosmos because we've yet to find another one yet. We can't be taken down from the outside the United States. I mean, we could, but it would be very hard. Never like to say Can't We have the most powerful military, the most powerful economy. Most entrepreneurial, hardworking workforce anywhere in the world. So liberals a lot of them who absolutely hate this country. Everything it's about. I'm sorry. I have to give you the bad news. But it's true. They figured out a long time ago. The best way to dismantle and burn this place from the ground is not from the outside, but from the inside. And what better way to do that? And to cause chaos on the inside by getting all of us to hate each other. For the most superficial of

How to Make a Big Decision

"Today. We're looking at how to make a big decision and to help us do that. I'm joined as usual by dr rick hansen. So dad how are you doing. I'm really good. And this is one of my favorite topics yuccas s. I think there's a saying in medicine. Good judgment comes from experience and experienced bad judgment. Experience might sometimes have fostered some improvement in my judgment. And i'd love to kind of share that with you. And i know this forest also is a topic that you have really engaged a lot in your own life including putting it into practice. Boy sure brought these principles down out of the ivory tower. And you know one thing. I was really interested in what you said. Is the tension between playing it. Save with the known versus taking a chance on the unknown. And i wondered if you could talk more about that. Yeah i think that there are some big themes that tend to come up inside of these conversations inside of these choices. When we're making decisions and something that i was kind of reflecting on prior to this conversation we were just talking about it a second ago before we started recording is how all of these decisions are different one school or another one person or another place deliver and other whatever but if you drill down deep enough they kind of all become very similar in terms of the process you can go through around making choices and these big themes tend to emerge over and over again and i do think that one of them is absolutely this tension between what you now in what you don't and they're kind of these different biases that are at play here. I talk a lot about bias on the podcast and one of the big ones survivorship bias which tends to tell people toward believing that things are going to work out. Okay if they take one of those big swings kinda like history is written by the winners yeah histories absolutely history is written by the including your personal history absolutely

Most Australian Frogs Intolerant of Human Modified Habitats

"How many different species of frog did you studied. Get your results. I studied a title of eighty-seven spacey's she's almost a third of australia's total number folk. Spacey's we've got about two hundred and four here. Yeah just over two hundred forty. And where did you go round new south wales or where else it was actually. Oh based off citizen science data so data from all across australia we had one hundred and twenty six thousand reports of folks from over thirteen. Thousand participants incredible. Did you ask these citizen scientists. Well that's actually pretty simple. Today was get out there. Get out the frog day app. Press record whenever they had a frog calling and then that's it they just send it off to the australian museum. One of us here listens to it and identifies all the folks that are in that recording. And then they send it to an jones to broadcast it. Yes sometimes they do. Yeah so north. Track to tell how much humans affect frogs and sometimes unfortunately interfering with their ecosystems handed you get that sort of information out so it's all about compiling all that information that we had and then looking at a species of frog and asking. Where does this for lack to live relative to all the environment that's available to it so if it spending a lot of time near the city's and it actually it's range covers all the way from cds to farms farce. Then we can say that. It's actually quite tolerant. But if it's range say is in the city but it only really lives in pockets of forest in the city. We can say that it's quite intolerant. And how many of them are threatened with possibly extinction well we found that almost seventy percent and potentially even more were intolerant of human modified environments so quite large percentage of our folks

95% of bull kelp forests have vanished from portion of California coast

"Until recently giants seaweed called bull kelp formed lush underwater forest in northern california's coastal waters. These kelp forests have long provide critical habitat for many species like salmon crabs and jellyfish. But now just a. Few patches of bulk help remain. It's very desolate looking. That's meredith mcpherson. Nephew see santa cruz. She was part of a team that studied satellite images of about two hundred miles of california coastline. They found that starting in twenty fourteen. The area covered by kelp dropped by more than ninety five percent. She says the die off was driven in part by an underwater heat wave which depleted nutrients in the water and made it harder for the kelp grow compounding. The problem populations of purple sea urchins which eat kelp have exploded in the region in coming decades. More marine heat waves are expected. We know that these types of events these warm water events and stronger el nino's going to become more common and frequent with climate change so mcpherson says warming waters and hungry urchins will make it harder for these kelp forest to survive.

How One California Community Protected Itself From Forest Fires

"In the foothills of california's sierra nevada mountains sits rock haven. It's a small private holding a forest of cedar fir and pine trees and for years. It was a ticking fire time bomb as throughout the west natural fire had been suppressed for a century. We had it rough even six times as much fuel on the ground as the average for california where you could imagine. That's a tele of the stuff that can burn. Jennifer lives in the east bay. She's the fourth generation of her family to use a cabin near shaver lake and is part of the association that collectively owns the land. She and her husband worked hard to convince everyone else. They had to do something about fire risk. We've been talking for members for you know maybe almost twenty years but many of the families were reluctant a century ago. A lumber company cut most of the trees in the area. When the forest came back people loved the trees and wanted to protect them. The idea that it was good to cut crowded trees and set prescribed. Fires was a non-starter we had ruled in our association. With you better tree and you know tweezers take it and blah blah. but by twenty fourteen. There was a new threat during a punishing drought bark. Beetles began killing entire stands of trees making the fire risk. Even worse mu white finally convinced her neighbors to hire a forester julianne stewart. Told them taking action was urgent. So it was really neat process and kind of bringing dot group of people together to realize like we're on the precipice we have an emergency. Our trees are dying. We need to do something. People compromised and made a plan then came the question of money. We'd never would've been able to pay for it all of that. In a timely manner can run up to five thousand dollars an acre to clean up recover and maintain a forest. That would mean about a million dollars for rock

"The trump administration that they need to get out of this country within thirty three days at among other things will end her access to the drug that is still keeping her alive and that she helps develop for everyone else in the world. Who also has this rare genetic illness joining us. Now is dr paul harman's at u._c._s._f. Doctor who treated as since she was seven years old and who led the clinical trial paul the trainer disease dr. Thank you very much for being with us tonight. Thank you rachel. That's really this has been a devastating two week period. We appreciate your help trying to tell us about story. It's absolutely horrifying. I have to ask you first of all if i've basically explained this accurately if if this is the situation that her family is facing you did beautifully even without a biochemistry background was it is remarkable but we we feel like we've given isabella death sentence just as you described it when we surveyed in the early two thousand two thousand one and isabel participated hundred patients worldwide which we figured was ten percent of the population shen. We didn't find any patients much beyond age twani. This was sort of the cutoff in the survival with her type of disease percents. Oh at this point are might prediction would be if we stop enzyme. She's going to rapidly move into that category of disease level and whether it's months or one to two years you're really handing her death sentence. It's as if we're pulling the plug on a respirator or stopping feedings for a patient that needs that type support and i i think we you know we have really devastated this this family so we couldn't do these trials. We the families are unbelievable and their willingness to move from around the world to a site that's experienced and <hes> <hes> these very sophisticated advocated trials they relocate. They live one to two years at home site and sometimes the option to go back to their home. Country does not materialize realize that home-country can't offer these lifesaving therapies and just as as you described she she only had the option of staying and she stayed paid for now most of her life. I mean she's really grown up through the grade school high school college now she's looking at graduate school and what sort of career and jobs she can pursue and and she's a really amazing child and young adult. She's one of the leaders there's in our <hes> our program and and the entire nation in terms of n._p._s. and <hes> it i think i hope we can see a change in policy so they're able to to move back to their normal life. Dr paul garments the pediatric neurologist u._c._s._f. Children's hospital. I can't imagine that this is not going to continue to be national news until this is resolved. I know that you and your colleagues. The extreme willing to talk about it is an important part of that. We'll be back with you in in coming days. Hopefully to talk about how this case is progressing. Thanks for being with us tonight. Excellent thank you. We'll be right back. Stay with us <hes> for us tonight. I will just say one note about that. Last story that we cover tonight over the course of this week we have been and following what started off as local reporting and is now national news about this unannounced policy change by the trump administration where.

"Just by the plaintiffs and tomorrow the best we can tell those plaintiffs are going to have to tell the judge in that case what they think about this offer. They're going to be many many many judgement days when it comes sms to true reckoning for these companies that killed hundreds of thousands of our fellow americans and made billions of dollars while they were doing it but one of those judgement achievement days potentially a very important one looks like it's going to be tomorrow behind closed doors in a very important ohio courtroom so we shall see much space university of california at san francisco has a really really good children's hospital which is called the benny off children's hospital when isabel was seven years old. She was invited by u._c._s._f. Children's hospital to come to that facility for treatment is about had been born with a rare genetic disease called the n._p._s. Six means basically that her body is lacking an enzyme that it needs for all sorts of things and that causes severe damaged our body and our cells in a way. That's not going to get better on its own and not going to get better over time u._c._s._f. Wanted to launch an important clinical trial to try to develop a treatment for that rare genetic disease but they needed her in in this trial to be able to do it. Rare is an important word in this story right her rare disease by definition for any rare disease. There just aren't that many people who have it there. Aren't that many patients. The where you get new cures for rare diseases is to find the patients who have those diseases and get them involved in testing potential cures you do you need to be able to find patients to be able to develop the cures to be able to beat those diseases. That's how it works so isabel. Who had this disease. She and her family family were invited to come to san francisco to come to u._c._s._f. For this experimental treatment because they were able to do that the clinical trial was able to go ahead and ultimately the treatment that isabel received in that trial it got f._d._a. Approval as a way to manage this disease and to keep patients who have this disease alive that f._d._a. Approval so basically would not have happened at isabel not been able to come to u._c._s._f. To take part in that crucial trial well today. She continues to be treated at u._c._s._f. C._s._f. She gets weekly intravenous infusions. Remember against you came in for the first time when she was seven years old because of her illness. Her family was told that she might never make it to see age eight isabella's now twenty four years old. She's a similar com laude college graduate. She was director of the student government organization in her college. She started a scholarship fund for students with disabilities. She says she now may want to go to grad school. She teaches dance chance to other kids who are also patients at the children's hospital that saved her life. She's still needs treatment again. She needs weekly intravenous infusions of this treatment. She also needs additional surgery..

It was his own idea for a p._r. Plan to push the drug harder to try to drown out those early concerns that they knew about that email from richard sackler is among the documents that were gathered by prosecutors in two thousand six as they prepared federal criminal fraud charges against executives at purdue pharma this month the new york times published new excerpts of a prosecution memo from that time even though that prosecution memo was brutal prosecutors recommended to felony charges urges against multiple purdue executives that could have put them all in jail ultimately produce lawyers bargained the prosecutors down but ended up in the what resulted sit in the end was one charge for the company and just misdemeanors for the executives purdue ultimately had to pay six hundred million dollars that minor nuisance for a company that had made billions of dollars on oxy was barely even a pothole on the road to the multibillion dollar national opioid catastrophe that would roll on seamlessly from that day in court to ultimately kill more than four hundred thousand americans purdue escaping basically unscathed all those years ago with the help of lawyers including the president's personal lawyer rudy giuliani that cleared the way for the opioid epidemic to continue unabated for another decade aid plus but that didn't stop thousands of cities and counties and states from suing purdue pharma themselves among other things fraudulently marketing oxy z. content misleading the public about the risks of abuse well now here in two thousand nine hundred and it's all coming to ahead which is going to be worth watching tomorrow's news and over the next few days because there is this federal judge ohio who's currently overseeing combined docket more than two thousand of these lawsuits against purdue and other companies arguing that they they should be held liable for fueling the opioid disaster. These companies have insisted that they haven't done anything wrong that if these cases go to trial there sure they'll win then they're innocent. They're happy to fight but in the wake of a big verdict against one opioid manufacturer this week and oklahoma n._b._c. news broke the news that purdue pharma arma is actually trying to work out a way to open its checkbook and make this problem go away once and for all under the proposed settlement. It's being reported that at the sackler family would give up ownership in their drug company. They'd handover at least three billion dollars personally as a family. Don't worry still be billionaires. They also have their accompany declare bankruptcy now. It's interesting those terms. Were supposed to be private. The judge in this case had imposed a strict gag order barring anybody eddie from speaking to the press or the public about any settlement negotiations but somehow the news broke anyway the a._p. Further story today with reporting that the sackler family want this settlement to not only get them off the hook for those combined two thousand cases in federal court ohio. They want this settlement to settle all the cases against them in federal court everywhere everywhere and in every state court in the country too now whenever you think of this as a potential fate for the company that brought us oxycontin and the family that helped helped sell us all of it whatever you think of what they're multibillion dollar offer might amount to an divvied up among every jurisdiction claim to it. "And store large quantities of carbon as a result southeast alaska plays an important role in the global climate and carbon cycle. The tongue s. supports about eight percent percent of the carbon stored in forest in the lower forty-eight. The good news for southeast alaska and the temperate rainforests of alaska in general is the relative stability of coastal rainforest films. The climate niche of most of the dominant tree species is particularly resilient to expected changes in climate in the region over the next thirty to fifty fifty years so yes good news. The tongue is doing really important. Work is stable and resilient says the u._s._d._a. Right that's a really good thing. Since tonga's eats up tons and tons and tons of climate change accelerating carbon from the atmosphere. It's really good that it's so resilient how resilient is it against mining oil and natural gas drilling and logging right because the u._s._d._a. produced that report report about the importance of that taught us forest and now this past week president trump has reportedly ordered u._s._d._a. Secretary sonny perdue to let that forest be chopped down just a slightly wider view on this for just a second. I mean this isn't just like the trump. Administration acting writ large part of what is going on here is the silent catastrophe of one specific part of the trump administration. I don't really know why hasn't had more sort of national attention but there is a governing catastrophe inside the trump administration that hasn't had much attention and it is called the u._s._d._a. The u._s. department department of agriculture and it's not just a catastrophe in terms of what it's being used to do to places like that thomas forest which even that agency itself acknowledges acknowledges is hugely important and must be left to do its thing i mean even on donald trump's own terms. His is a disaster donald trump and his campaign of course i think that he can count on rural voters in general and farmers in particular to be a key constituency heading into trump's reelection right but his trade policies and his agriculture policies are a disaster for rural america and american farmers and they are quite obviously making that constituency a problem for him right. Now i mean just scan the headlines right now. That trump's getting out of farm country. Farmers frustration with trump grows as u._s. Escalates china fight national farmers union condemns new tariffs quote trump is making things worse worse trump's trade war could cost him with a key constituency farmers this from the iowa corn producers association iowa corn farmers to trump the government. Put us in one hell of a bad situation. Agriculture is in one hell of a bad situation right now. The government has put us in this situation a soybean farmer ohio saying i couldn't vote for trump again. I have to protect my business a farmer in north dakota quote every time i go to the grain elevator it's fricking trump this frigging trump that as for the president's solution to all the problems he has caused in rural america all the problems he has caused for american farmers. His proposed solution solution has been to sort of go socialist on the issue right to actually pay off directly. Pay farmers give farmers billions of dollars in cash bailouts to make up for how badly the trump administration's policies are hurting american agriculture but the trump administration is apparently having trouble pulling that off as well n._b._c. news reporting that tens of thousands of u._s. Farmers still haven't gotten payouts. They have been promised. The administration is having had to pay out over a million dollars in interest on late payments simply because they can't get it together to actually pay the farmers the way they said they would one county director farm service agency in missouri telling n._b._c. quote we had farmers waiting at the door from seven o'clock in the morning to seven o'clock at night to get their payments and they're not getting and so amidst all of this and this is a real problem for the president in terms of how he thinks of his political base amid all of these sort of worsening headlines increasingly bad situation that the president has created for american farmers. The president recently dispatched his agriculture secretary sonny perdue to you. Try to try to soothe some of these tensions that have been created with american farmers well how back oh..

"Talking about that a little later on this hour as well but it's all but first tonight. Do you remember when vice president dick. Cheney accidentally shot a guy in the face. You remember when that happened. I know we play a lot of archival news footage on the show. Usually we get like international newsreels or network news footage from the time we could do that but i got to say that this this particular moment in american politics vice president dick cheney shot a guy in the face and we all found out about it through a really weird series of circumstances. It was so weird it was so impossible able to understand at the time that it happened that i feel like the best way to get a sense of this was like when it unfolded at the time is actually to watch the daily show from the time vice president dick cheney accidentally shot a man during a quail hunt at a political supporters ranch making seventy seventy eight year old harry whittington. The first person shot by a sitting beep since alexander hamilton handled pam alligator did of course was shot in a duel with aaron burr over issues of honor integrity and political maneuvering whittington was mistaken for bird the other player in the drama ranch owner and i witness katharine armstrong. We were shooting a covey of quail royal vice. President and two others got out of the car to walk up the cubby. A bird flushed the vice president <hes> it took aim at the bird and shot and unfortunately <hes> mr whittington was in the in the line of fire and got pepper pretty well cheney also discussed why nobody found out about the incident until ranch owner katharine armstrong went to a local paper the next day katherine suggested and i agreed that she would go make the announcement that she put the story out and i thought that make good sense. "Possible track for hurricane dorian <hes> the islands that are in the immediate path of what is now a category one hurricane are the bahamas but as you can see from the track there one of the distinct distinct possibilities here is that the storm will continue to barrel in the same direction into the weekend which could see it smashing into the eastern coastal florida as a category three or even category four four hurricane now. This has been a storm that has been hard to forecast precisely. That's part of why the virgin islands were somewhat taken by surprise by the direct hit the storm. Give the virgin islands on its way to the north west. There's still a range of potential outcomes here both in terms of the path and in terms the timing but the planning right now for the southeastern united states is basically for the whole of florida's atlantic coast like for miami all the after jacksonville to get ready for what may be a major hurricane arriving as soon as monday morning so we've got is on that right now an throughout the evening evening this is going to become increasingly an urgent situation for the southeastern united states over the next hours and days today president trump cancelled a planned trip to poland with a white house statement saying that was in response to the hurricane bearing down on the eastern coastal florida and that hurricane may absolutely be y president trump is cancelling his planned trip to poland but whether or not it is that cancellation also happens to have some really interesting and knock on consequences that are not about the storm at all and so we'll be talking about that a little later on this hour as well but it's all but first tonight. Do you remember when vice president dick. Cheney accidentally.

"The show weeknights at nine eastern on m._s._n._b._c. Thanks for joining us this hour all right big show tonight. There's a whole bunch of developing news. We've been watching over the course of this afternoon and into tonight and we've got an update tonight on this story that we have covered pretty intensively over the course of this week that until now as far as i can tell hadn't received any other national news coverage. This is the story we've been covering on the show this week of this new policy by the trump administration that they didn't announce announce but it came to light when families of seriously ill children started getting letters last week from the trump administration telling these families that although they may have had permission to stay in this country before specifically because their children were receiving advanced and life saving medical treatment here the trump administration according to these letters no longer respects that and so these parents are now being told to take their kids out of medical treatment which in some cases will result in the deaths of these children trump administration is sending these letters telling parents to take their kids out of medical treatment and get out of the country by next month so this story perked in the local press in massachusetts. I in the boston area and then in florida yesterday well as i said that we should maybe anticipate. We are now seeing big time. National coverage as people start to realize what exactly the trump administration is doing here even though they never made a policy announcement that they're doing it tonight. The story is now on the front page of the new york times. It is breaking and expanding as a national story as we knew it would so we are going to have more on that tonight. We've actually got a doctor. Who's going to be joining us tonight. Who has a story that you are definitely going to want to hear. We are also watching of course this projection.

Now, we didn't get an alert and talk after it had already head. And then we got a second one, probably twenty thirty minutes later damage, also at beech grove high school, missing roof again. And the scoreboard is on the ground at the football field. Scattered power outages, also, Indianapolis powered light counted more than three thousand customers in the dark across the metro area and tree limbs and power lines are down making travel hazardous. And you could add this to the list of concerns high. Here's wish TV meteorologist Marcus Bailey flooding is going to continue to be an issue. "You'll feel Qatar's. Welcome to the show. Thanks. It's great to be with you. So you're a writer, but you found yourself in an interesting seasonal career as well. Couple years ago as a fire watcher on a fire tower in the Hilo national wilderness area in New Mexico before we get to your experience. I don't think a lot of people know about fire towers in America, and like what they do. So he gives a kind of a history of a brief history. Fire towers in the American west. Yeah, they really took off as a phenomenon early in the twentieth century with the advent of the US forest service, and there were some massive wildfires in the northern Rockies around nineteen ten that kind of encoded in the DNA of the early forest service, a desire to stamp out for his fires as quickly as possible. So one of the ways of doing that. Of course is early detection and so- fire towers were built on many mountaintop in the American west some had already been in place in the east even before then, but by, you know, nineteen forty or so there were probably about eight thousand fire towers across the country. And the idea was you place, a human being up on a mountaintop with a three hundred sixty degree view, and that person by staying vigilant will give you, you know. Quick detection of a forest fire allow firefighters to jump on it right away, and stamp it out. So they pretty much lived up there for months at a time by themselves. Right. Yeah. The early fire lookouts would typically go to a mountain well away from a road and just stay there for the duration of fire season from when the snow melted in the spring, and until whether changed in the late summer fall that fire danger would finally be lessened. You know, there's some great writing that's come out of the job. Norman MacLean in his book of stories or river runs through it wrote about being a fire lookout in nineteen nineteen in Montana. And he he basically went up and lived in a tent climbed a tree several times a day for a look around. And that was the job and they would use a crank telephone. Phone to call in fires to the ranger station below Jack Kerouac also do that. Right. He did he spent one season in the north cascades, Washington state, and he made much of that experience in in multiple books of his he's probably the most famous literary fire lookout of all even though he only spent sixty three days on.
