"Upper Marlboro, 27 in Fredericksburg in 27 in foggy bottom. At 1140. National health spending grew by almost 3% last year totaling almost four and a half $1 trillion. It was greater use of healthcare, but the government spent much less on COVID last year. Our Dmitri sodas talks about this with health affairs editor in chief, Ellen Weil. It shows us that when confronted with something as cataclysmic and consequential as the COVID pandemic, we are able as a country to put a huge number of resources literally hundreds of billions of dollars into the healthcare system to take care of those who need services and to keep hospitals and doctors offices open. During a period when demand otherwise contracts and then we are able to pull it back as demand resumes and get back onto something a little closer to normal. One other thing I'd say along here is that these are not projections of the future and if you talk to people in healthcare right now and if you try to go to the doctor or the hospital right now you're fully aware of personnel shortages workforce, shortages, you're aware that the cost for hospitals to keep their doors open have gone up. And so there is concern that even though we made it through this period reasonably well from the perspective of the healthcare sector functioning that it foreshadows a few years where prices could go up very quickly or people would need services and not be able to get them. So this is a look in the rearview mirror. It doesn't tell us exactly what's coming. Alan, how are we doing with the number of uninsured people and can that tell us a little something at least about the health of our healthcare system? Although this report focuses on spending, it's also a reminder that during this period, we've actually had a growth in the number of people with health insurance because under the public health emergency, people who get on Medicaid, states can't kick them off, even if maybe under other circumstances they would have, employers, when people lost jobs, some people lost their insurance, but they mostly have it back. And so we're actually at a period where the number of Americans without health insurance has dropped quite low, but that number could go way up when the public health emergency ends. And that could have a big effect on people's ability to afford healthcare and therefore use healthcare in future years. Health affairs editor in chief, Alan Weil on Skype, read more about the latest healthcare spending report in the latest issue of health affairs. Upper Marlboro three O one northbound near village drive the reported crash. Now it sounds like south pedal Georgetown road as you head toward the beltway. The rack has just the left lane getting by. Still slow leaving Baltimore on 95 south. Good news is the closer you get to route 100. Your pace is improving. There was an earlier wreck after route 100, but the damage is kind of done. The rest of the ride south, you got a little delay to get onto the outer loop, which remains slow over toward George avenue. Two 70 looks good south coming out of Frederick. You will find it heavy in Rockville as you approach the 28 falls going down the spur, especially, slowly down toward river road. You should find nothing in your way. Now, we'd had a late rec 95 going north bound out of woodbridge, the wreck was before lorton, got moved over onto the right shoulder. Arlington, northbound route one at 23rd street south, the wreck in the left lane. Don't know if it's still there, but we had one broken down as you leave Springfield going north on three 95 near edsel road. It had been in the right lane. Crash cleanup causing slowdowns and Reston on the toll road eastbound after hunter mill staying right to get by. We'd add flashing signals on the George Washington Parkway down your batch for lane, was flashing red in all directions. Our delay on three 95 also, you're going to find it slow from duke street, off and on to and across the inbound 14th street bridge up on the case bridge in your park police exit two. "Centreville, 72 in upper Marlboro 71 outside WTO studios. 7 41 now, prince George's county executive Angela also Brooks, says police in the county will begin stepping up enforcement of an already on the books curfew to keep teenagers off the streets at night. The announcement comes as the county markets deadliest month in decades with 24 killings investigated by police in August alone and a rise in violent crime by repeat offenders. And now we're hearing from the person responsible for prosecuting those crimes in prince George's county. State's attorney Aisha brave boy who was not invited to the announcement on the curfew says despite what was insinuated by county executive Angela also Brooks, who suggested people aren't being held accountable and are back on the streets to commit more crimes. Brave boy says her record is strong on the most violent cases. Last year we had a 98% conviction rate for our homicides, 98%. Ray boy also says laws have changed in Maryland when it comes to prosecuting juveniles, but her office often calls for young people who commit serious crimes to be held on no bond. "Upper Marlboro, 82° in centerville, 82° here in the nation's capital, it's 8 40. On Thursday, the CDC endorsed updated COVID boosters that it says will provide immunity against the omicron strain and infectious disease doctor tells WTO that older people are going to benefit the most from this experimental booster that will start rolling out later this week. Doctor Monica Gandhi is with UC San Francisco and she thinks that the vaccine will help with BA 5 omicron. To be fair, we don't have any clinical data on these boosters because the FDA said you don't need to give me clinical data. Just tell me if the antibodies are increased if you give B 5 boosters. So they've done the studies actually in mice and VA 5 antibodies are very high. She says people over 60 are the group that benefits most from these boosters. Older people have always in infectious disease neither boosters needed more protection as we go through respiratory pathogen seasons. Since you pointed to a recent study that shows 80% of American kids had COVID at least once. They are not needing boosters again and again because they have young immune systems. Luke Luger WTO P news. The Defense Department says it's now offering the novavax COVID-19 vaccine to military members and other members of its health system, the move comes a month after the FDA first issued an emergency use authorization for the vaccine and defense health officials say they're now letting unvaccinated military members choose which COVID vaccine they'd like to receive. The novavax shots are a more traditional vaccine when compared to others. On TV, you've probably seen commercial after commercial about Medicare benefits. "Upper Marlboro, it's 86 in centerville the same in D.C., low tonight, mid 60s to low 70s. It's 7 41. 9 months after his baby boy apparently killed himself by mistake, a northeast man is charged with second degree murder. 23 year old JD Wheeler has been ordered held without bond. Police say his 23 month old son legend Wheeler died of an accidental self inflicted gunshot wound from his dad's gun, which police say was unsecured inside a home on Chester street southeast. The shooting happened November 24th last year, and arrest warrant indicates that Wheeler was on pretrial release on two firearms related charges at the time of his child shooting death. Wheeler faces a preliminary hearing September 13th. Now to a story we brought you first here on WTO, citing what he calls a high level of violence and disruption at Alexandria city public schools, Virginia attorney general Jason miraz is making it clear to city and school leaders that he supports the funding of school resource officers. In a letter to city leaders in Alexandria city public schools, the attorney general cited a deadly brawl involving students near Alexandria city high school as one reason SROs are needed on campuses. This also comes after the city voted to refund the positions for another year after voting to not set aside money for them. Miari said SROs in his words are a vital tool for protecting our most precious assets, our children. He also urged schools to draw a hard line against crime. Polygram Lee as a parent member of a school system work group that will offer recommendations on SROs while she says the letter won't influence what they do. This adds a dimension of intensity to our process. I'm Sarah Jacobs. Alexandria city school board chair Megan alderton takes issue with the attorney general for not addressing her directly in his letter, saying in a statement, as an elected official, and a black woman, leading the most diverse school division in the Commonwealth, I would expect that I'd be addressed specifically when our state leaders are referencing suggested changes for a school division that serves a majority of students of color. Alderton says she would welcome a conversation with the attorney general on positive steps to benefit all Alexandria city public school students. In his response, mayor Justin Wilson said he strongly supports efforts to ensure students are safe and thriving and would welcome the attorney general

Once again, temperatures rising into the mid nineties that heat index up over 100 degrees Little hotter. If you're around the D, C and Baltimore metro areas and points East from I 95. That's where we have a heat advisory until 8 p.m. Tonight. That's where you could find that heat index up over 105 109 and it'll be likely higher the closer to the water that you are so either way, it's going to be hot. We'll have a mix of sun and clouds. We continue through the morning showers and thunderstorms developing along I 81. After about one o'clock this afternoon. We will continue to see them. Travel east being the D C. Washington, D.C. - After Months Of Speculation, Chase Young Is Coming Home

"Yeah this is pretty exceptional moment the Redskins wealth truly by virtue of the losing season last year end up with a great pick in the draft and they picked chase young tells about chase young he's a local boy and that his defense or not yeah and I could not find one expert analysts that didn't think he was the best player in the draft didn't think that he is basically a hall of fame potential I mean it's all there for the young man so if you think about the Redskins and some of the topics in their history of the draft they could have just landed maybe the biggest fish of them all and he's right he's right here with just a math that he played at Alabama he is bully exactly right I'm sorry my favorite FDA he was going to happen but the funny thing they could do hello at you last year and and we were laughing because we're like and they can go if you have the again this year but when you change young was going to be an absolute no brainer taking him at number two there had been some teams that were aggressive to try to move up to get them and the Redskins you said no dance night and the coach Ron Rivera they were all in on young and then they did it was a drama free night for the rest yeah and they landed the guy they wanted with the guy they really needed it wasn't position I need the defense while you know they had trouble rushing the quarterback last year they basically well I have a pretty talented defensive line already they had more needs on an offense but they get the pass rusher that everybody wanted to take very exciting you can tell I was up late eating out the very first round when I when I replace Alabama for you know if you feel fine I would actually have an event that was happening live and in reality you know like a reality show type event again in sports that we can keep it wait for you know you mentioned you mentioned that he's going to fill a role where they didn't really have that big of a need for how does that affect with how he how he meshes with the rest of the team and how they see him especially the other guys on the defensive line like wait a minute why do we need this guy yeah we're doing okay yeah you know what though Matt I noticed he had he was a late like fifth round draft pick he led the team exactly in half getting the quarterback is basically for the defense you know just tell new number one and they didn't do it they were tenth in the league in fact they didn't do it at the rate they wanted to last year so he immediately will make them better if he stays healthy of course and on the defensive guys they were all tweeting just they're just absolutely last night the reaction has just been you know this is unbelievable welcome home brother you know he actually is like ten miles from fed ex field and fifty miles from aspen where he grew up in upper Marlboro so if elected is that kind of a really cool story for change on to be with the Burgundy and gold and he said it would be on he told ahead of time he was he didn't want to like take it for granted because it even though every mock draft has the right to take young young said it would be honored to play for the Burgundy and call yeah I saw pictures of his father apparently came out even before the Redskins it announced it publicly we told the crowd gathered outside the house last night these go with the Redskins which is awesome so Carol that you talk about like you know powering up a defense that was already headed in the direction of strength the history of the NFL including in recent history the sometimes defensively dominant teams become overwhelmingly dominant teams even if the offense isn't performing at the same pace now you mean the world about the ramen you know when they can win with Trent Dilfer even when I was a great defense yeah so I think you know came in and he always did it for him the draft is always clear focus not need focused so he want to get somebody he thinks of the first pick a first round pick for any team should have hall of fame potential sure and I believe you know it's funny because you're looking at the history of great contrast maybe Sammy Baugh and Gerald green at the top right of the people they packed both picked in the first round not as high as chief Sammy Baugh you know with a six pack and does your green but the twenty eighth pick the bottom first rounders you get a chance young at number two who Unisys is putting a lot of pressure and expectations are young man but who by all accounts and all scattered reports could be an absolute team changer and that's what Rivera said he's like it just makes our defense better it makes our team better and to have that kind of excitement I'll get a lot of people around here who may be gave up on the right hand side three and thirteen last year maybe drinking the Kool
