Ferguson, joined by youth speakers in a conference this morning, accused Metta of ensuring young people spend as much time as possible on social media, knowing teenage brains are vulnerable to the need for approval in the form of likes on their content. These and other features are intentionally designed to incessantly monopolize the time and attention of kids using Instagram and Facebook. They tap into their so -called fear of missing out, discouraging them from leaving the apps once logged they are on. Numerous studies show that higher levels of social media use among adolescents is to linked adverse effects like depression and low self -esteem. "13 after the hour, welcome back here with America in the morning and a check at the national weather forecast today. Here's AccuWeather dot com, meteorologist Carl babinski. We're entering into the final week of April with a rather quiet weather pattern across much of the country, but as a trough of low pressure lingers over the eastern half of the nation, some unusually cool conditions are expected in areas surrounding the Great Lakes, as well as in the Ohio valley. Much of the mid Atlantic region and across the northeast, not only today, but throughout this entire week. Scattered rain and wet snow showers have been occurring since yesterday beneath a core of some of the coldest air in the upper atmosphere, those will continue today across parts of upstate New York as well as in northern New England and in lower Michigan. Temperatures in all these areas should peak in the upper 40s and lower 50s, however, with more in the way of sun expected along the I 95 quarter, many of the big cities will reach the 60s this afternoon. To expand on this a bit more, this morning will get off to a cold start with a widespread for Austin hard freeze in areas that extend from Nebraska all the way to Pennsylvania. These areas where frost advisories and freeze warnings are in effect, but temperatures will recover somewhat this afternoon. It'll be no higher than the 50s across much of Ohio, Indiana and northern Illinois. The southern plains won't be seeing much rain today, but an area of low pressure developing over the rocky should provide some beneficial rain during the week. So we'll be keeping an eye on that. Temperatures today will be in the 60s in Amarillo, Texas in the 50s and Dodge city, Kansas, showers of rain and mountain snow will continue in Idaho today and in the Pacific Northwest rain is expected in western Washington and Oregon, Portland and Seattle will be in the 50s. Lastly in California some fog and coastal areas will break for sun today, highs will be mostly in the 70s and 80s. And that's the weather across America. "Mid 40s, high temperatures in the upper 40s to low 50s, pretty showery Tuesday as well. From the coma four weather center. Vehicles are slowly taking drivers away from traditional combustion engines. But those EVs need valuable metals that aren't easily found at least on land. Could the answer be in the sea? Evan halper has taken a look for The Washington Post and spoke with northwest news radios, Taylor van seiss. Anybody who's ever panned for gold in a river knows how frustrating it can be to find a little nugget, much less of potato sized hunk of nickel, why isn't Ford or Tesla trying to scoop up these potato treasures at the bottom of the ocean? Yeah, you'd be surprised at how easy they are to pluck once you can get down there the technology is there to send these big robots down to kind of harvest these what they call nodules that are lying on the top of the seabed, the challenge is that it creates all kinds of environmental problems. I mean, this is an area that has not been that well explored. There's all kinds of species down there that have yet to even be discovered and what happens when you start pulling start sending robots scraping the skew sea forward, vacuuming all these things up. And so it's a dilemma. Is there any estimate on what a worst case scenario would be? Because there's got to be a cost benefit equation here. There's all that valuable metal just sitting there. There's been a lot of research into this, but there's a big dispute. The seabed is a large unexplored area. And where they'd be looking at me, you're talking about 1500 miles off the coast of San Diego. This is just an area that there's not a lot of activity and to actually be able to research what the impact would be, it's just very expensive. They would need to spend a lot of time taking a lot of samples they've been doing some, but mostly what they're turning up as they do research down there is that they need to do a lot more research. And so 700 scientists marine scientists have signed a petition saying it's too soon. We need to really have a better understanding what the impacts are going to be and the consensus among scientists are like that they need about ten years to figure this out. Of course, the auto companies need these medals now. They're looking to expand EV production. There's all kinds of issues with getting the medals from land. There's child slavery, child labor involved in the cobalt mines. The nickel mines create all kinds of environmental problems and so, you know, one company that's pushing the seabed mining is saying, look, when you look at all the problems with land based mines, going to the ocean seems preferable, but the automakers are looking at this and saying, you know, this could be a big reputational problem if we start mining the seabed and then we learn of all kinds of environmental problems we're creating that we didn't realize we were going to create. And then how do we explain that? And so they're proceeding very cautiously. None of them are signing up to do this right away. A number of car manufacturers, as you know, publicly supporting, in fact, a moratorium on seabed mining, what kind of brands would we recognize? Yeah, so Volvo, BMW, renewal, Arabian, this is heavily European focus group, but they've all called for moratorium. The NGOs that are pushing for moratorium and have made the big issue. This is a signature issue for Greenpeace, for example, have gotten to the car companies and they said, we need to sign on to not be involved in this. And the story we did in The Washington Post this morning really looked at, okay, these car companies are in a bind. I mean, they really need a lot of these metals, but finding them is very tough. And this company that's promoting these seabed mining and saying, we can deliver enough of these metals to make enough car batteries to power the whole American fleet of electric cars. If we go to the seabed, but a lot of these brands have said, this just looks too risky for us. We don't want to touch it. They're also battery chemistry is changing every day and so by the time they start scooping up these nodules, what we even be seeing cobalt in batteries, the American car manufacturers have not signed on to the moratorium, but they've also made very clear that they're not rushing to the seabed either. But this was a Southwest flight from Vegas to Columbus, Ohio. And early morning flight yesterday, 6 a.m., 6 30 flight, everybody getting on board. We've all been on those where you're kind of in a slumber and you'd smell a coffee and you know all of that. So people were on there. It was quiet on board. We're told, took off how to Vegas. And then southwest says that one of the pilots became ill and then needed help flying the plane, but we know from radio transmissions that it was the captain who had stomach pain and then went completely out, went unconscious in the cockpit. And this is one of the radio calls describing what had gone down. He's in the back of the aircraft right now with the flight attendants, but we need to get him on an ambulance immediately. They need to get him an ambulance immediately. The first officer who, again, can fly on his own, took control of the aircraft called for help flight attendants and a nurse on board tended to the captain they got him oxygen in the back of the plane, but there was an off duty pilot from another airline who was flying as a passenger in the back, who then went up to the flight deck, helped the first officer make the emergency return back to Vegas, southwest tells us the pilot from the other airline handled the radios, while the first officer handled the flying to get them back to Vegas. And that they made a safe landing back in Vegas, medical help was given to the captain who had only been out for about a minute, came back to and was given oxygen back there, but I asked our ABC aviation analyst today, Kim, somebody Seattle knows well, John Nance, former 7 37 pilot so that off duty pilot in the back jumping in, does that surprise you at all? And he said it's not only not unusual to find qualified pilots on police at the cabin of just about every flight, but it's a common occurrence. And because of our commonality of training, somebody who's qualified to fly the Boeing 7 37, for instance, for one airline can assist with that or fly it for any airline. And then the other thing I asked him is what about there have been calls internationally to try to go down to only one pilot up front to try to bring down cost, labor shortages, the training problems that a lot of airlines are having right now getting pilots. He says this shows why you need two up front that had the captain been alone up there. Nobody may have ever known that he was out and having a medical issue. Also had there only been one up there even if people did know if there had been no pilot in the back who would have flown the plane at that point. And so you got to have two of there. The other thing, a lot of areas, the world, first officers are not as well trained and not as ready to take over the controls. He says that shows you here in the U.S. very important what we do. There's a perfect example of why we need an absolute minimum of two pilots of the cockpit at all times. Both of them able to land the airplane by themselves. So in the end, at least the flying aspect of it wasn't a real big deal, they turned around. They went back to Vegas. And at medical emergency can happen to anybody, but these pilots they do go through pretty rigorous physicals, right? They do every year, they've got to pass their FAA medical and as long as they go through that. I mean, that's a typical physical the uri would go through, except they got a meat standards at the FAA sets of blood pressure and everything else. This is a northwest news radio morning rewind with Brian Calvert and manufacture looking to head to another country for a vacation or perhaps get some inexpensive plastic surgery. There are definitely places you want to avoid, especially after the stories we've heard this week. On the northwest news line, ABC News crime and terrorism analyst Brad Garrett, Brad, that story that we heard about the kidnappings in Mexico. This brings us all to the forefront, doesn't it? Yeah, it does. And it also reminds us that there are clearly places in Mexico that are truly dangerous. There are at least 5 Mexican states that the U.S. classify as a level four as far as danger. The place where the four Americans that traveled through Brownsville, Texas, into Mexico, that was a level or is a level four. A level four is the same as Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria. If you can think about going there and so you need to take those 5 states and just take them off the board no matter how attractive the medical procedure and award the vacation might be, but there are other places, obviously. It's a big country, like cancun, cozumel. Those are like a level two, which means, yes, generally safe to go to, but you could still get in trouble there. And even if you go to a level two, to even a gated community, in my view, there are certain safeguards you need to take. Like always have a phone that will work internationally. Always keep an ID on you. Don't travel outside the resort or the medical facility without some direction from people that work there as far as what's safe, what's not, what our safe ways to get to various locations. There were a lot of unsafe taxis in Mexico. You have to be extremely careful with car you get into. And you can't really rely on the police because they're not the police that we have in the United States. So a number of things you need to think about. Do these levels do these warnings do they actually escalate to the point where people from this country are barred from going from certain places or are we still talking advisories? It's really up to you to make the final call. I don't know that you could no. Because we haven't barred, we haven't barred like the whole country of Mexico. But what they just say is to not go there. They can't order you not to go there. They're just saying, don't go there. I mean, the four that were kidnapped too were killed. Were they even aware of that? I doubt it. I guess people sometimes who don't move around internationally, even think about going to the State Department website. And then also checking with wherever you're going. I think the female of these four was going for some medical procedure, had she talked to the location about, is it a safe place to go? How do we get there safely, et cetera? So it's a lot of things to think about and in particular, if you're on vacation, you don't want to think about. But go into Mexico despite the beautiful beaches and ancient landscaping and so forth, you're not in Florida, you're in Mexico. Brad, we always appreciate your advice and perspective. A desperate search continues for a missing dementia patient in watkin county. Police say the 67 year old woman was separated from her husband during a walk Friday morning in maple falls. Surgeon rescue K 9s had been searching on the ground while a U.S. customs helicopter and drones from the police department are monitoring from above. The woman was last seen wearing a wool coat with red rubber boots. If you see her, you're asked to contact the watkin county sheriff's office.
