"A half a mile away now what else did you like here well it's got lots of space tons of space and with this remake of it the interior is a lot nicer too they used much higher quality materials than before and you still have all that space that some of the servers that got redesigned lost some of that the mileage is better than it was before don't look for 30 or 40 miles per gallon but your mid -20s is now pretty easy to to accomplish with the atlas because just it has one engine now just a four cylinder turbo engine it does very well on the highway when it comes to gas mileage and we're still talking about anywhere between the upper 30s and maybe all the way to like $53 thousand which is that going right for these vehicles the VW tends to be a little bit under like the some of other vehicles if you look at something from GM or something like that you'll notice those go higher than this vehicle so this is almost I wouldn't say a bargain but it does cut the cost a little bit from the competition it really deserves a hybrid especially since they got rid of the v6 engine you only have a four cylinder engine and you're man when you have the the seats filled and you're going up it was like man I wish I had a little bit more oaf here and a hybrid would definitely do that with the battery and the gas engine working nicely together would deliver v6 or eight cylinders of power without the penalty of fuel economy wtop car guy Mike Paris there's more at wtop .com search car review a quick look at the top stories on wtop musician legendary jimmy buffett has died he was age 76 prince georges county police say a university park man has been charged with murder in connection with the death of a teacher who was missing for more than several days more than a month ago keep it here full details in the minutes

"Ties to our area in particular the Annapolis Area, what can you tell us? Well? Yeah? He was just a huge fan of the Chesapeake Bay pretty much all water In reality, but the Chesapeake Bay seem to have a connection to him You know you would hear stories about him visiting Various crab houses around here and then in recent years he's been I guess affiliated with the sailing Team at the Naval Academy he would come up here usually once a year and just go sailing with them up and The down Severn River in the Chesapeake Bay, and then you'd always hear about him going to a particular seafood house in the Eastport neighborhood at Annapolis for crab cakes is pretty popular, and you know who can blame him because that place does have good food, but yeah You would know he sing about the Chesapeake Bay area and certainly like to come visit here when he could he also did a number of tours out at Wolf Trap a number of shows out there and it always seemed as though he was enjoying himself when he was on stage one type of these of entertainers who really seem to be having a lot of fun and that you know that certainly reflected in the the in just the attendees as well whether it was you know 40 ,000 people or you know two nights out Out of a weekend at the Nissan Pavilion or Jiffy Lube live now in Virginia. He also played at Meriwether a lot know You he would just draw enormous crowds people just looking for that escapism that that few hours where they could just Have some fun and relax and you know and a lot of times it would be people that would be those button -down white -collar types that You would see in their jackets and ties and be just more very formal at work. You know they'd get there on a weekend and kind of be able to just shed that away and just try to have some fun and escapism in life. It was Just a certainly a way that very few people very few other entertainers had a way Connecting with fans like that and making them feel like they have the ability to do that and he did it for more than 50 years pretty Yeah, amazing career I mean it's hard to believe that you know he was still trying to tour earlier this Year he was playing shows in Key West back in February, and you know he certainly had cut back his touring Schedule in recent years he didn't play nearly as often as he had used to but you know you would listen to podcasts Other with musicians in his band and all they talked about was just how much fun he had I think he's got another album coming out sometime in the next few Weeks even this was a guy that just loved music and and more than that you know his music was about storytelling He never quite got all the recognition and respect from critics but he had a way of just sort of Telling hearkening stories back to the to the novels by Mark Twain and the like that he would read as a kid and then just sort of Amplified feelings that weren't always the most profound and deepest but he just had a clever way of using words To express thoughts and feelings that connected with a lot of people that weren't always the deepest but they were still uh, just Unique and very fun and just kind of let you sort of kick back and just escape life and maybe Not take things so seriously. Not much on the way of happenings through the District and again I'll remind you that big, big work zones have been suspended for a long holiday weekend but some of the long -term zones will still be there. Case in point, Montana Avenue, the roadway being repaired between New York Avenue and Saratoga, essentially close to Northeast so you'll be following redirection there but nothing is affecting New York Avenue thus far, moving in and out pretty well but having closure in Northwest along Park Road overnight have not gotten the all -clear from a gas main break and that was between Mount Pleasant Street and 18th Street. The roadway was essentially follow authority direction. Beyond this 295 all doing well will extend our horizons moving into Maryland with big roads also doing okay, new crashes in Brandywine on 301 Northbound near Clymer, Matta Peak Business Drive. "Well, and that was very, very big, as you know, in the Soviet Union, where bottom line is the government decided exactly what you were going to do. And while I think that free citizens should have certain rights, I don't think it's a bad idea to emphasize trade and tech and especially today when you look at what college degrees cost and what they get you for most graduates. I think trade and tech is the way to go. Yeah, oh yeah. Yeah, oh yeah, they're. Paying some of these schools 70,000 a year to cook to go to college and I know. Right. And major and what sociology? That's really going to help. Listen to a talk show the other week, I think it was, and a man called in he had a business, he needed truck drivers and he says, I can start them out at $90,000 a year. Wow. And he said, I can't get anybody. I can't get enough people. But he says, I get people with bachelor degrees. Jobs at 60,000 and I can't use them. Well, exactly. Although it behoove them to learn how to drive the darn drunk Yeah, yeah. Absolutely. Yeah. So anyway, I thought that was pretty interesting in that stuff. Well, on yeah, we used to do that. Yeah, we used to do that here to a good degree where it was very common that the schools would have two tracks, the academic track, or the trade tech track, and they're used to be a lot of cooperative ventures. And then I think a few things changed societally, of course, everybody suddenly thought that the college degree was the ticket to middle class, but the other thing, of course, was Vietnam. Most most males, at least, majored in I don't want to go to Vietnam. And I don't blame them a bit. So that sort of changed the landscape. But today, to me, if I had a child today, I would be encouraging them to go into trades. Yeah. Well, in fact, I had friends that were a journey of an electrician in the union. And union electricians and their union as part of their apprenticeship required it not only are they learning the electrical trade, but they also had to get their bachelor's degree. Oh, that's interesting. Well, I'm not even sure that should matter in most cases. But yeah, I shouldn't, but it was interesting. Yes, they were requiring as part of their apprenticeship program. Very well. For one thing, it would prove how conscientious the worker was and whether they in fact could stick to the program. Years ago, the FBI, when they were only recruiting in college, they didn't care what you majored in. They just wanted to make sure that, you know, you were going to stick to something for four years and come out with a degree. So sometimes it's just the psychological proof more than the educational proof. Interesting stuff. Yeah. Yeah. But yeah, and you talk about locational schools. I remember I moved around a lot as a kid. But I went to a high school on date in Ohio and they had a high school that was strictly a vocational school. And they had options like, in fact, one manager I worked for at Ohio bell when I first started there. He started winning this 15 going to the vocational school and his part time job was working for Ohio bell. And they credited all that time. So when he retired at the age of 65, he had 50 years service. Which is really nice. Now dating back then was the small works capital of the world. And there were a ton of manufacturing jobs that some of them paid very handsomely. Well, yeah. Well, it was a big one that I remember there in CR. Sure, of course. And about 5 different GM plants and one frigidaire. Chrysler air camp was there all kinds of stuff, but my brother was telling me now that the campus or whatever you want to call it of NCR is all belongs to university of date now. They're building on air. Right. And so I don't know, where they're making their cash rescuers is now probably all overseas somewhere. Unfortunately, unfortunately. Yeah. Absolutely. But yeah, NCR used to be right there by university park. Yeah, and that was I mean, from what I knew, people there, that was the place to work because they had a amusement park or a guest where they want to call it for their employees. You go down, they have like a river down in there. Oh, wow. Yeah, right off of Patterson. It was beautiful. Yeah. It was something. I remember one day going, I was working one day early in the morning, going down to there, and I saw all these bulldozers and dump trucks down there, these 40 foot dump trucks. And they were just bulldozing those big buildings down. If you remember, they were all bricks. Oh yeah, it was like shunts on one side and Patterson on the other. And it was almost like it was an island. It wasn't technically, but it was mostly surrounded by water. Of course. Yeah. So that's all gone now, but we're actually a Dayton is then developed and buying up the land and development down in there and stuff like that on that whole area. But I guess a lot of the other plants are gone. Now, a lot of them are shut down and stuff. Well, that's right. That's sad, but true, places that were manufacturing giants
