"university work" Discussed on Talking Biotech Podcast

"Talking BioTech podcast, we're speaking with doctor Avis Khan, he is an associate professor at Cornell University working in genetic improvement of apples, primarily around the aspects of disease. And what are we leaving it off before? We're talking about the problem with apple breeding that it takes a really long time to generate a new favorite line. And that the new lines not only have to have all the resistance to disease, but also have to have psi shipping and be reasonably flavored and colored. I mean, all the things consumers want. And so what you're trying to find is this very tiny little overlap in the Venn diagram that happens only once in a very long time. Once in thousands of trees that you may get a favorable combination of genes that is commercially viable. So are there other ways to do this? And so I'd like to focus on biotechnology and what's being what's happening right now in breeding programs with respect to like say genomic selection and marker assisted breeding. Kevin, you have seen that there are a lot of developments on genomics and genome sequencing insight and especially for roses through crops and so if you remember the apple genome sequence was published first in 2010. And now we have many genome sequences of outputs available. And very high quality of genome sequences. And then on the other hand, there are a lot of developments on biotechnology site. We have seen new opportunities transformation genome editing, and at the same time on genetic analysis site new tools and analytical platforms have been developed and pipelines have been assembled, for example, for genomic selection and also marker or genomic system selection. So all this developments with Apple genomics sequencing and also a broader community of biotechnology biotechnologists, a geneticist. We are in a very good spot at this time that we can in actual rating the improvement of.

The contract that the university has, and I think that's something that's been, um Explicit as as we've been going through through this process, um, but it's You know the in terms of imagination. So what kind of design could be used for exploration a joint team. From nasr's jet propulsion laboratory stanford university and mit believe that hedgehogs are the answer. Let's hear more from. Ben hoffman a graduate student at stanford university working on the project. We've done a lot of modeling with various different types of analytical numerical models. And we've learned a lot the hop angle is more a function of the shape of the rover. So with this type of impulsive. Breaking cubic shape provides a nice forty five degree hop on average. The team is experimenting with fly. Wheels and friction belts to create the momentum that allow the hedgehogs to hop or spin across the surface. We took this prototype down to houston and flew on the vomit comet for two hundred. And if you guys aren't familiar with that it provides about twenty second windows a relative weightlessness. So in each of these twenty seconds we were able to test maneuver so far. The prototypes funded through. Nasr's innovative advanced concepts program are just what the engineers order

The Swedish Secret to Happy, Productive Work Days

"There's yet another scandinavian term. Making the trending rounds lately. This one has been around in some circles for a while. There even used to cafe in manhattan by this name that went to a few times. It's called fica f. i a and it's basically the swedish word for a coffee break but in practice means so much more quoting courts. The word fica is used both as a noun and a verb and is derived from the swedish word for coffey. A national obsession for the world's third largest coffee drinking nation unlike the american style. Caffeine jolt the swedish coffee break is a moment to literally leave work behind taken first around ten. Am and then at three pm. It's not a strategy for multitasking or for fitting in another mini meeting. It's a chance to relax in the company colleagues. The longstanding swedish social ritual doesn't necessarily even have to involve coffee. the key is to pause your day and quote. You can have your coffee or tea. Whatever your pleasure. And ideally you'd pair your beverage with a fresh baked good but the main point is to take a real actual break from work lars lund. Who owned that chain of fika coffee shops here in new york city told courts that taking a fica break two or three times a day makes them more productive and number of studies have backed this up. According again in two thousand ten grant thornton study found that swedish workers were the least stressed worldwide. Perhaps in part because we companies are experimenting with the six hour work day and made fica mandatory and even though only one percent of swedish employees work overtime according to the latest oecd better life index. They're not any less productive linkoping. university professor. Rebecca adult suard has studied the history of swedish social rituals and says breaks like fica may actually boost productivity studies. Show that people who take a break from the work don't do less. It's actually the opposite. Efficiency at work can benefit from these kinds of get togethers. She writes on her university blog. Her observations support a two thousand fourteen stanford university work productivity study that argues for capping the work week at fifty hours maximum and quotes and nyaka yano. The general design manager at moody says she noticed that swedish workers are exceptionally good at switching between relaxation and focus and within office space is the fact that the break is taken. Together across hierarchies putting all that aside for a few minutes can really help break down barriers and encourage healthy forms of bonding among colleagues. When i read about fika. I realized that i've kind of set my schedule up this way without meaning to i take a mid morning break to have a snack and coffee and pull myself away from the endless feeds and e mails. I'd been staring at all morning. And then i take another no screen break in the afternoon. Once this podcast goes up. of course. i'm not in an office. Space chatting with co workers and always manage to take both of those breaks every day. But that's the goal. And on the days that i do. There is a noticeable difference in my energy focus and overall contentment levels. Now i just need to get better about my baked goods game if you want to dive deeper into fica. There's a few books out there. One that kept popping up for me is actually a recipe book but it also includes a lot of information about the custom in how to adopt it in your own life. it's called fica. The art of the swedish coffee break by annaborough bonus and johanna pinball and the official sweden youtube account also produced a six part series on fica back in two thousand sixteen that you can watch to learn more about it links to both of those in the show notes

It's a lot harder to get out the vote during a pandemic

"They say meet the voters where they are especially if they're your friends on the Internet from American public media, this is marketplace tech I'm molly would. It's a lot harder to get out the vote. During a pandemic political strategist and organizers are trying to buy new ways to reach voters and potential voters, research shows that usually in person interactions are the most effective technique, but now organizers are turning to an old idea. A turnout captain, a local volunteer who whips up voting interest, but combined with targeted data and sometimes APPs, and they're finding that that combination can really work marketplace's Kimberly Adams covers money and politics and did some reporting on this for us. Things like knocking on the doors of strangers to be in their face about a candidate does not work in a pandemic, and there seems to be a shift among sort of the political strategists and the get out the vote folks to really look at something that's called relational organizing, and I spoke with her thick Balasubramaniam. He's at Howard. University works a lot with data and with campaigns on this idea of relational organizing and. And here's how he explains it. Essentially you make a list of your family members, friends and neighbors, and because of research we know that the Messenger really really matters way more effective than TV digital or radio is when you hear a pitch straight from someone that you'd know and trust, and that makes these things a lot more effective according to the research. We've seen so far right. Do apps like this exist now? Sort of this APP called turnout nation. The founder Mark Mullen was telling me that with this APP. Basically, it doesn't necessarily push people to you, but you just say hey I want to get more people out to vote. Here are ten of my friends and family that I am committing to help them get registered and help them turn out to vote, and whereas a traditional campaign method of saying, knocking on the doors of strangers can boost turn out by like two percent. Their method boosted turn out by about thirteen percent. And why is that because it's more personal? Not just because it's more personal, but with turn out nation for example and a lot of the ways that this sort of get out the vote tech is being deployed for relational organizing much of it is not associated with a particular campaign. Most up vote efforts are run by candidate campaign specifically they tend to sort of be focused on a huge amount of stranger to stranger contact, and the last maybe month or three weeks before the election, but there are a lot of people. People who want to increase turnout and do other things to support American democracy year round and A. They don't necessarily want to do it in the service of this or that candidate and they only want to do it just before before Elections Right so folks like Mullen who work on this say that not only are volunteers more likely to get involved when you strip out the politics, but they also say that people respond better as well when you're just saying. Hey, you should vote. To Hey, you should vote for this particular candidate so obviously like this is a unique moment because of the pandemic, but it sounds like if it's that effective, and if you know, events may become less popular or good old fashioned door. Knocking becomes less popular at. The groundwork for a different type of digital campaigning in the future I think there's going to have to be a different type of digital campaigning. Now you can imagine some hesitancy by campaigns to us. Sort of this turnout captain model that that Molin is highlighting because they don't necessarily want everyone to turn out to vote. They want the people who were going to vote for their candidate to turn out to vote and the individual campaigns are scrambling because our entire campaign infrastructure is built on sort of these face to face interaction. A lot of that is just out the window.

"Everyone and welcome to another episode of the town hall as all move forward we have been stuck for like two and a half months now and it's really weird time in history but the town hall is staying dedicated to telling really important sustainability stories. And we're lucky. We get some really massive brands. This episode is one of those lucky ones. Today I'm actually joined by two guests. Jones enlisted were from National Wildlife Federation earlier in the year. Rubicon was named the official sustainability and tech partner for recycle mania of the competition under the management of the NWF but will get into all of that and enlists. Thank you both so much for being here today I've only done multiple jest episodes like once or twice so let's just establish a little bit of water for answering some of the questions. Honest truth besides my husband and my dog youtube or the only people. I've interacted with today so I'm a little over all of us to bumble words over each other so Liz let's start with you. Tell me a bit about your role at. Nwf A little bit about your professional time line and how you can got to where you are and then in that time line or in your story what do you think sparked passion for environmental sustainability in in Christie. You're on deck and I'd love to know the same free. We'll start with this. I am the director of Pre K. To twelve education for National Wildlife Federation. I have actually end with the fedaration for most of my career. I'm going into my twenty four th year and I really started off in a regional office and did a lot of regional education work and for the last eleven years have been focusing my efforts and the national level And really pushing forward the work that we do with schools and other informal education opportunities and community My background actually. My undergraduate degree was in wildlife biology and forestry and I started off as a wildlife biologist but Kinda fun interesting fact is I found. I had a lot more fun topping and and I feel like I made a bigger impact talking with people within the community that I was doing my research in collecting data. You know like the nighttime Barstool chat where we were talking about. Grizzly Bear Habitat. And what it meant to you know Maintain and keep that habitat healthy and the ways people get involved so that that's somewhat how I moved from that into education and got my masters in education at in Oregon And then pretty much. Except for one other job with The Lake Champlain Basin Program doing watershed education. I've been working for WF And you know my my passion for this work. I I think really stems back from my childhood. I was lucky enough to spend every single summer and a place called a Greensboro Vermont which is in North East Kingdom of Vermont on Kathy Lake. It was my grandparents Cabin and my parents would just throw out the door every morning We'd be gone all day with the catching crayfish and swimming at night. We'd be catching lightning bugs and watching a shooting stars with my grandparents and it just it set the stage for my wanting to be able to pass this Passion for Nature and the environment and to also protect loved that Christie Europe. Sure yeah so I have been with National Wildlife Federation for several years as well. I think I'm going on. I started in two thousand three at National Wildlife Federation. So I guess I'm going on my sixteenth seventeenth year. I've worked in higher education program so I manage higher education programmes at National Wildlife Federation working with colleges and universities working with them to help them advance their efforts on campus Sustainability Renewable Energy Waste Reduction Habitat Restoration Green purchasing that sort of thing. And I've I've done that since the entire time I've been at NWS We also in our program here. We also help college students. Young professionals develop leadership skills and also learn more about career opportunity so career development to learn what their opportunities are in conservation field or their opportunities are in learning about sustainability and sustainability skill. So they can bring that to whatever a career field sector. They choose to go into after they finish school. So I believe you know similar to Liz. I grew up outdoors playing all the time spending all day in the summertime that we would be out as soon as the sun was up and become home. You know. As soon as it was starting to get dark I grew up camping. You know we would go to the closest national park to win where we grew up was Shenandoah National Park here in Virginia and I still live in this area in that area. So we we go to the park all the time. It's beautiful and so I take my little girl there as well So just growing up. We spent a Lotta time outdoors. I really enjoyed seeing wildlife and spending time and hiking and going to the beach and searching for seashells and that sort of thing when I graduated college. Actually a little bit. Before I graduated college I went on a trip to Andros Island. The Bahamas in it's a family island in the Bahamas and I went to a field station their biological field station and that is where I spent the next six years of my life. After College I worked at the field station. I worked with college. Students and high school high school students helping down learn about ecology and learning field skills in that type of thing and that really helped me really understand value of hands on learning. So you know whenever you education as you know there's sitting in the classroom and learning there is value to that there's also value to being out in the field learning skills. You know the experiential part of that and so. When after that after I left the field station I worked for nonprofit for a little bit in the environmental security sector and that really looked at conflict around natural resources so water timber diamonds was another example and that that was looking at conflicts most likely outside the US. And then. When I started looking for a new opportunity I was really attracted to. Nwf's education programs. We have a very large education program. National Wildlife Federation engaging. Little kids all the way up through adults and so that is kind of what got me hooked at. Nwf and applied for a job on the campus sustainability team. And so I've been here since two thousand three. That's awesome okay so I will let you guys now kind of feel these answer. You know whoever wants to answer white and build upon each other's responses in we're going to focus a lot on education recycle mania but you know the. Nwf Is a massive umbrella brand for a lot of different environmental conservation causes. So I did want to do a little bit of background about the mission. You know the strategic plan the six pillars of what makes the NWF and then we can get into the specs of the educational programs so whoever wants to field kind of the overall NWF mission answer can A. I'll go again and you know the midst of NWF is really to unite ensure that wildlife thrive in a rapidly changing world and There's no doubt in all of our minds and these days that our world is rapidly changing whether it's with this pandemic Like we're facing right now or the pack that more than one third of Americans. Fish and wildlife are at risk for extinction or the climate crisis. And of course all of these impacts what the impacts are on any of our marginalized communities so you recently. I just wanted to mention this because I think it's really important and it really sets the stage who I believe. Nwf is particularly right now and our it was CEO Calling Amarah who recently said that we need to be leading this charged with compassion. You know during this time because this pandemic is clearly showing that men. There are many structural inequalities in our societies such as access to clean water food healthcare or the

Can The Coronavirus Change American Society?

"So the other day I was doing one of those. Ask Me anything events at the daily wire. You know where people send in questions. Several people ask me what changes I thought would be wrought in society by the Chinese flu crisis and the truth is I have no idea. They'll be any changes or what they'd be if there are any but the question did set me to thinking about what I'd like to see happen. For instance. A lot of students have been taking their classes online during the lockdown. That could bring about some educational improvements. College obviously has become a cesspit of socialist and diversity. Garbage garbage is spreading from classrooms. Out into what we laughingly call the real world. I'd like to see smaller. Better colleges like Hillsdale with better values be able to compete with large institutions through online classes. Be Better I think if more people could take classes hillsdale than they do. Some of the universities working today I think the press has been behaving in a shamefully. Corrupt and one-sided manner for a long time and I think trump's daily briefings or maybe bringing that to light a little more than usual. Cnn is actually cutting away from any news they don't like an NBC. Says they want to stop covering the briefings altogether. Making trump popular. I hope they do stop covering them. So viewers move onto better venues. It would be great truly if people finally got wise to guys like NBC News Chairman. Andy lack who relentlessly cells leftism and feminism under the guise of news while covering up for rapists like Harvey Weinstein and abusers. Like Matt. Lauer has never been a reporter. He doesn't know anything about journalism. He's just selling a philosophy and he's doing it in a very dishonest way and it would be nice if it weren't it would be nice if it weren't just conservatives but also liberals who wanted a fair press. I think that would be helpful to both sides as I've said to many times already. It'd be nice if some women discovered that they've been lied to in that motherhood and homemaking actually a lot more significant and rewarding than virtually any out of the home job you can have. I want individuals of the female persuasion to have free choice. Obviously but I think they've been propagandized out of their best choice and no speaking. Generally I don't think men are as good at motherhood and homemaking just to save you. The trouble of asking in a Gotcha tone futures writer. Yuval Harari makes an interesting point about evolution. He points out that evolution favors life but not necessarily good life for instance animals that people like to eat. Cows and pigs and chickens thrive in terms of survival because we people keep them alive. But we don't always treat them very well so they survive but their lives suck and then we eat them. Harari points out that that can happen to humans to that a way of life that helps us. Survive can be chosen by evolution over a way of life that is good or moral. I actually think that has been happening to us. Recently I think globalism may be good for human survival and working women may be good for human survival and maybe even abortion infanticide and babies raised by strangers may be good for human survival and I think humans can survive and even thrive physically and yet becomes spiritually empty moral monsters with no hearts or souls. And I've sometimes been afraid. That was exactly what was happening to the world and once it happens by the way you won't even be aware of it. You'll just think it's progress. Even Conservatives will defend it once it actually goes through. It would be nice if this crisis made us pause a moment and ask ourselves not how we can survive and get rich but how we can live and become more human closer to God who made us into the people. He made us to be as the old joke. Goes I can dream. Can't I all right? You know you're sitting at home. We got to say a thank you to all the people who are delivering stuff. Because I know it's dangerous. I know they were working because they need the dough but they're doing a great job. I know we're depending on here People bringing us you know food and books and all the things that we need and medicine all the things that we need a really doing a great
