Are Movie Theaters Screwed?

"I'm Sean. Fantasy and Amanda Events, and this is the big picture. A conversation show about movies. There is a lot of news about movies in the world right now, but not so many movies, it is officially August which means three things one, it is hot as hell outside. To its Amandus, birthday happy, birthday Amanda. Thank you shot three a very bad time for movies and this year. Of course, it's unusually bad. Thanks to covid nineteen. So man, we have a lot to talk about today's episode a lot about the state of the movie business and more specifically about where you didn't spend your birthday, which is in a movie theater. Because movie theaters are not open and it's sort of feels like movie theaters are screwed. We're going to talk a little bit about some of the decisions that Mc made last week and the ramifications of that, and maybe some of the financial decisions that AMC made earlier today, and what that means for the future of movies. It's a very complicated time. Can you help us understand just a little bit of what transpired last week between? AMC and Universal Studios. Yes. So we got the ultimate resolution of the great trolls world tour fight of twenty twenty, which is that after much public negotiating and wild statements made on both sides, AMC theaters and universal came to an agreement and universal movies. Now will be shown in AMC theaters with a new theatrical window of seventeen days, which is notably shorter than the previous window that most that all studios and movies operated under in the United States. That window used to be in the neighborhood of between two and three months, and that meant films has a plan theaters for nearly a quarter of the year and sometimes more than that before you could find them at home and that's changing I sort of I. You know it's clearly changing for the purposes of universal movies. No other studio has come to this agreement and universal. Universal has only come to this agreement with one theater chain. Am See. So this is not a cataclysmic event, but it certainly seems presidential. It certainly seems as if it's something that is going to send shockwaves throughout the industry for the future. You know. Obviously, we spent so much time on this show talking about the slow atrophying of the theatrical experience. This feels as significant. A story has happened in that respect I was just doing some doing some Napkin math last night about box office receipts, and so over the past ten years, the annual domestic box office has averaged about eleven eleven, billion dollars in the United, states, and right now, it sits at about one point, eight, billion dollars with just about two plus months of true box office. So. These are really desperate times for movie theaters and so am see I. I'm trying to understand what specifically is motivating AMC's whiplash decision making because as you said, Adam Erin who is the CEO of AMC had some very strong words for universal's decision about trolls world tour about four or five months ago, and now they've made nice and in fact it it sort of feels like AMC took a hit here in this negotiation, what do you think is animating their their decision making deep financial desperation just this absolute total. What else can we do to keep the lights on? which I am not a do not have an MBA. Okay, and I'm not an economist, but there has a lot has been written. You know in deadline and in the Wall Street, Journal and the trades about the extremely precarious financial situation of AMC in particular, and obviously all of this is heightened by the fact that movie theaters have not been open for months now and they don't have a business model because of covid nineteen but I think you know covid nineteen has really exacerbated. What was. A A tricky situation for all movie theaters. But especially, it seems AMC just because of how it's business it structured and you mentioned today there assume news about AMC's restructuring in order to. Reallocate some of its debt, but it just all seems under the guise of we have to keep the lights on because we do not have cash on hand and movie theaters aren't open and we don't know when they're going to be able to be open most places, and if we don't have cash coming in, then our business no longer exists. AMCs deal with NBCUniversal could bring new movies to viewers homes in 17 days

"AMC which is a big theater chain in big trouble because of the pandemic was in trouble before now it's much worse trouble. made a deal with universal studios and the deal breaks the window that all the movie owners have been trying to preserve because they feel as essential to their business I mean, the previous window was ninety days in this deal. which is so striking seventeen days. The universal has the option to take these movies and put them on premium video-on-demand like they did with trolls, trolls movie recently like they did with Staten Island, the Judd appetizer movie, and they have to charge you a minimum of twenty bucks but seventeen days is so much shorter than anybody had ever imagined. I think other theatre owners are just like sort of stunned by the steel and another theater chain owner. The CEO said, we do not see any business sense in this model. So let's break this down and figure why they did this. I, mean first of all, the theater chains are extremely challenge right now they have no product they have nothing to do and I. Think this is a catalyst for what a lot of people have said was going to eventually. Happen is that the theater chains we're going to have to succumb on this windows issue and get the movie studios to essentially cut them in on a portion of revenue for premium vod. So that means if universal has a movie after seventeen days, three weekends, they can put that movie on vod charge a premium for it, and they will have to cut in the movie theater chains on this. So essentially, they're sacrificing this window exclusivity for a piece of what? They see as a growing potentially transformative market. Yes. As You well know Matt the danger here I mean with the big movie with one of the fast and furious movies that costs a fortune and needs to grow fortune. They will never get there even if they charge you a lot of money for that premium video on demand thing they the calculation is they can't get there and they would leave those movies in theaters longer but if there are certain movies. That they put in. So quickly after seventeen days are we not training the public to say, I. Don't need to go to the movie theater just wait. Yeah and the question is was that happening already or is this going to be the spark that Burns down the theatrical movie business and I and I think there's room for debate there because we see the trends we see in the movie business are that people show up in mass amounts for the a-list. E ticket ride movies like avengers and fast and furious but increasingly, the middle ground of movies and below that are not alluring people in theaters and we've seen example after example of this at the same time as streaming services are going nuts on their film offerings. So is AMC getting out ahead of this and saying we got to throw in the towel and least we will get a cut of this I mean think about what happened in the music business the music business was essentially destroyed by streaming and then slowly but. Surely. It was brought back by streaming because the consumer was trained to pay the services got great and now the music business is doing great because of streaming and I think ultimately that's likely going to happen here in the movie business and AMC is getting a piece of this and negotiating to be part of that future rather than continuing to hang on to the past model. Yeah. I mean I think there are a couple of really big questions. Can you have movie theaters when they're on a steady diet of gigantic movies? There's that sustain them that can keep them in business and the other big question is it really can AMC survive long enough to see the whatever fruits this deal might yield because. Is Teetering on a precipice. That's why they did this deal by the way. NBC. announced. Results they're they're getting hurt badly too but. AMC This is a lifeline they hope and We'll see whether AMC lives long enough to try this and if it really does. Kill. Movie theaters were one early indicator that is not dispositive here is that the stock went up when this deal was announced AMC. So clearly, investors are seeing down the line and saying, Hey, you know what we may be on something here.

Andrea Freeman discusses her book "Skimmed: Breastfeeding, Race, and Injustice"

"I'm Jim Taylor skinner and this is the electorate I'm this episode? A have a conversation with Andrea Freeman. She's a professor at the University of Hawaii and author of the book skimmed. Skimmed, this book, which chronicles allies of America's first reviving set of identical quadruplets, the false sisters, the quadruple tra, born in nineteen, forty, six to any faults of Bratcher woman who had lost her ability to hear in seek as child. Pulling the birth of her quadruplets, the white doctor who delivered them saw an opportunity he sold the to use the sisters for marketing purposes to the highest bidding formula company. There was an exploitative relationship that fall quadruplets for the rest of their lives. GIVES US A book about Race Poverty Exploitation and food policy. Answer and I opened our conversation with her, describing the story of Anti foles and the birth of her quadruplets Foltz was a block and Cherokee woman she lived in reads Phil North Carolina and was married to a tenant farmer. Everybody called P. to his twenty years older than her. She lost the ability to hear and speak in childhood, and she had six kids already when she learned that she was going to have triplets, so because of the high risk of the multiple she went early to the hospital spent a few weeks there, and on the night of their birth she found out there was another little girl hiding behind her sisters, and she had the first recorded. Recorded surviving identical black quadruplets, and so the girls who were very adorable, became instant celebrities. There was reporting about them all over the country. Universal Studios sent a camera person the New York. Times reported it and suddenly Andy May, who was not used to the spotlight became famous. Yes, she had the unfortunate luck of having a really terrible doctor. Right to just put simply he was unethical. In every possible way to premises, was Dr Kleiner, yeah Dr Fred Cleaner he loved to speak vocally about his support of Hitler. He maintained segregated waiting rooms, and he took advantage of the fact that he delivered the quadruplets to begin experimenting on them on the day of their birth. He had theories about the healing powers of vitamin C, and he injected them all with. A fairly large dose on the day they were born then he decided that he would name the girls. Even though anime had picked out her own set of names, and he gave them all the first name Mary, and then the names of his wife, sister, aunt and great aunt, the next thing he did was auction the girls off to the highest bidding Formula Company to Become Their Corporate Godfather. So what was anti doing all of the time? Did she have any say as to what he was doing, so I know about the naming things with the naming she was. was trying to think of names and I think she was going over names with our sister or someone on our family, and they couldn't decide, so he took it upon himself to come up with a name. The name Mary like you mentioned, but all the other decisions are being made. Did he even consult with her I? Know this was nineteen forty-six, so she probably felt that with this white doctor, you know she was black and Cherokee the. She didn't have a lot of choices. Exactly so there's race and class wrapped up in there and no doubt gender and. You know every kind of oppressive element there is that he basically felt that he could do whatever he wanted, and she didn't have the power to stop him, and also her her abilities, and you know she could not speak or here, and he just completely took advantage of her. So do you know about the deal? He made with the with the Formula Company in relation to I mean. was there any justification as to why formula was needed? Because she actually breast feed, she could, but in those days it was not encouraged. Really for anybody is not like now, but especially for. Black Women and poor black woman. There would be no expectation that she would do that, so it's just one of the distinctions so like back then pet milk, the milk which you would, you talked earlier and formula. They were one in the same, okay, so. You talked about this earlier. This was basically just sugar and milk, so it wasn't very healthy. No, it wasn't very. It should have been given to two babies I. Mean Right, yeah, so so the deal that he cut with a formula company. It basically change the trajectory of their lives, so not only was marketing deal, but they were kind of entangled in this for their entire lives. There was something about him, not only did. He cut a deal with the companies, but there's something about the land. They had a house built on land that I think he owned yeah the way that he had the deal made, and he had his sister-in-law, who was also the first woman to ever be a state chief justice. She was the trustee of this deal and he organized it. It so that he and his family would benefit so pet milk purchased some land from his father in law, but the land was just you know Barron and hilly and impossible to actually get anything out of but he had a house built on that land with a nursery with a very large window, and then put an ad in the newspaper, so people could come and pay to look at the girls on the weekends, very reminiscent of human zoos and then he had pet milk pay for nurses, and the nurses were his nurses, and through them he was able to maintain access to the girls throughout their childhood and continue his experiments

Also voodoo doughnut says there soga the only one on the west coast. I believe and that might not be true anymore land right california. I've heard them say that. I don't know maybe it's not anymore. There's a voodoo goddamn donut at universal say walk in the vegan doughnuts and i used to always get them and then go see movies movies the best so get a doughnut live your life. I guess now we should talk about how we went back to harry potter world wizard world history potter to be exact and we decided to see what do you know what it's called the dark holder idaho art show dark art show and i was so pumped for that because i love seeing the the late show that disney right and we didn't know what to expect. We really was a big crowd. We didn't know if we would even get a seat. We were told the first show is hard to get in but we ended up have not only getting in but being in the front row in the best most ideal place to watch the show this whole show was essentially we stand in front of the hogwarts awkward castle and they project lights and images onto the castle. We were both underwhelmed very say fair to say but the funniest part was the whole time jackie was going <hes>. Get good like what is the common yeah and it never came no. I think this was meant for children. It helps you know we're in our thirties. We don't have time for bullshit shit. We both were wear hairy at where harry we're here yet. They obviously couldn't pay daniel radcliffe to come into goddamn via boo for thirty minutes and record some wildlife for this down light show because harry was not present harry. Wasn't there ron you'll take there. Wasn't there fucking naughty. Myrtle was too busy in the bathroom. I'm fucking hazing. Everybody finds made an appearance as you know the wizard who shall not be named so he was there voldemort. It's fine. I can say the brave okay he was there but it was really underwhelming especially considering we sh we tracked all the way there from fucking jurassic world and we were like let's stay later and it was just like it's literally just a bunch of fucking lights on the side of the hogwarts and you know i like we'd i yeah and and i was underwhelmed even under the influence over and it was boring as fox so take that you will if you have kids. I bet they'd like it yeah. You know maybe skip go back into city. Walk gets you voted doughnut or go get fingered on the hypocrites rider something other than this. I was underwhelmed by it if i'm being on and again if you wanna wanna see most of it including the big finale that we were warned was so great it's on my instances dory. Oh it's there so yeah that's our do. We have any other big universal missile tips. I would say definitely where your sunscreen indefinitely hydrate and i didn't even do that until you said so. It's true. I texted you prior to because i'm not trying to get crazy tan lines is this summer so <hes> they do have water fountains so if you bring you bring an empty bottle you can fill it up <hes> but really hydrate. I was getting thirsty the at certain points to i think that's a good tip well yeah. It was also drinking a lot of sugary drinks. Try usually do that. Which is why i think moaning myrtle and i had to go see each other. Oh i i had a problem later at home. I texas even or no it was like in city walk to detour city shitty walk. That's what they should name that bathroom. Yeah i would love that. It'd be funny it would be i would think is hilarious. Be great okay. The last thing i want to say is i just really want to talk about into the woods at the ball just so i can write it off on my taxes like i said oh yeah okay so into the woods did a performance at the hollywood bowl..

"Pass to the front of the lines right. We the only develop universal but anyway it it still. Wasn't that crowded if you if you yeah so yes i think it was worth the wait eight yeah absolutely do we want to talk about the dress at cafe or do. We want to go straight to the ride all right. Oh yeah we went straight to the cafe right after drinks and got a vegetarian ah yes placed and a vegan vegan yeah so do we want to walk down the items because this was exciting as a vegan again okay. What can i normally eat at theme parks fries. Maybe a pret- soul and while you know dying of lack of protein everyone else has a turkey leg or something. I was so pleasantly surprised to see that the jurassic cafe at universal studios hollywood has this gorgeous played a vegan food. Yeah it was fantastic. What do you have in front of you. What it's exactly called. It was like a poll jack fruit tropical plate of food. Here's here's the thing this is what i discovered afterwards on my press kit yes. That wasn't even listed. Yes jackie. There was only a pulled pork dish rush so they took the pulled pork dish. Yes and they made a jack fruit version which i think is brilliant to had like a chimp cherry sauce on it chroma yes in the kremlin vegan every time they would speak. I'm sorry as that i mean the guy will go. Yes yes yes so the rice and beans are vigo's the slaw sweet corn cakes with slow roasted mojo pork or spicy mojo jack for yes honey so that's what i had spicy mojo jack fruit or is it mo jo m. o. J. okay oh i i. You know what don't know what either of them are but i liked eating like it. It was good good but a whole and how much was it is the price. Their prices not listed take. It was not bad. It was really not bad for a theme park. No i would eat this at like one of those fancy l._a. Like vegan restaurants. I would've never known it was so so please. Let's talk about the guacamole. Oh it was okay. It was okay. It was okay. It was okay. They gotta gotta work on the guac. I need a little more onion it just <hes> you know it's hard to mass produce guacamole. I've never had the summer months absolutely <hes> but i will say the guacamole can be made vegan. They put a little cheese on top yeah <hes> but you could totally get it without and then it has pomegranate seeds which like i love pomegranate seed in guac. That's a new thing i'm really here for <hes> and then plan taint ships which again i will always dipa implanted into some guac that was nice. It was a paleo option. It was beautiful and then you got this. Little lava cake which is q dot cake was so good like <music>. Getting a little cake from cafeteria is very yes yes. It's either very dry very good very good so we really really liked dresser cafe. I really did honestly on that level. I think there's only that i don't know if the panda express was still there but i think on that level level. That's definitely your best choice plus. You can sit there and watch dinosaurs walked by which we did see yeah. Dinosaur walkabout love the vibe <hes> <hes> everybody was really nice. The food was great. The drinks were great. <hes> and i think what i really enjoyed was that they elevated the food that one of the ladies at work. There's told me that it used to be basically burgers and fries and now that it's drastic world colon the ride. They've made it kind of i- lindy costa rican expose inspired to rican inspired cuba's <hes> island inspired tiki drink so they just say random island because because you know it's drastic world right. We don't know you're on an island yeah. They got fruit salad. They got crispy leaf lettuce role with shrimp. Oh yeah those look cute to theresa and potato empanadas. There's also a snapper..

"A lifestyle brand today and guess what i can all right off all my purchases from that day because we're talking about a year. Oh everything went on a credit card everything and also the end. I want to just tell a little bit about seeing into the was the hollywood bowl again just so i can write off the ticket. I'm so jealous you could've gone. I know you know about what's going. I usually keep up with my bowl news. I was really disappointed in myself but i ended up going on a sunday night and android myself but we'll get to that so where should we begin <hes> <hes>. Let's i guess start with. I'm gonna pull up my instagram story unless you start with how i think we should. I note that we went at three p._m. We did which i think was a perfect time perfect because we still got the daytime experience but then we got to transition into the night experience orients at universal studios which i believe was the perfect timing choice. Thank you and you go to universal semi often. I only only go during horror nights usually yeah and then you know when this opportunity arose. I was like <hes> yes. I will absolutely go to universal because you know i go disney. All all the time so right you do love disney. I do a lot of your posts on your edith. Katie account disneyland food they are and so when this person reach out to me they were like do you do i universal to and i was like i haven't done a full food experience at universal so it was very exciting to do that yeah so we got there around. Three got got there on three. The timing was great went straight to the bar we did. We went straight to the bar. Do you know the name of that bar. The iceland new bar okay is i s. l. a. i. s. this l._a. Okay and this is la and his this a new attraction disbar brand new just opened up about a month ago <hes> in conjunction with the drastic world the ride which is you know basically a souped up version of the oji ride right and so for people who have not been to l._a. Or have not been universal studios studios los angeles there is it's. There's not a ton of rides at universal <hes> but one of the most iconic rides is there was the jurassic park ride which they have now given a facelift and rejuvenated and named it. The jurassic world drastic world deride squirrel got it love that they have simpson's though rock yes. We love a hole in the ride. They do it like podcast the ride yeah which i've been on oh very very nice not to brag. I did okay on it. It's okay. I'll brag about being on this show. That's right okay so we both got a cocktail so now. We know that i'm not a big drinker but just so everyone knows new. Jackie drinks a little more than oo because why not right so. We ordered some cocktails. Do you remember remember we got. I wanted a pina coladas on basic as she saw that it was really good. I love pinochle lauda's but i don't drink them very often thin but that was a good and then i see my tie and then you gotta might <hes>. I think the guy liked us in gave us more alcohol but we don't know that we can't confirm back. I can come up that that amount of alcohol goes in every sunday because i saw we weren't special. I was he's like he liked us. He gave me a floater on top. You know they just really hook it up universal yes but then they get mad. If you get drunk so it's like what do you want. Pick your battles yeah. I just wanted to guy to give me a floater good flowed anyway. I'm still gonna. I'm still still gonna pretend that <hes> the guy gave me split because he did yeah he was like i know who you are yeah. He was like hey you look. You look cute in that you know stripy halter top from urban outfitters okay so then we enjoyed the cocktails. We had to finish them very fast because we had a v._i._p..
