"Yeah. Out today, we got Super Nintendo world at Universal Studios that in Hollywood, let's go. I really want to go to that. A lot of people were out there. And I'm offended. I'm not offended. But I saw a lot of people out there that are like my homies. I'm like, oh man, that looks like that looks like a time right there. I wish I could go with them. I wish you was heated when you saw Tam. And I thought when I saw Tim in front of Bowser's. There you go. Yeah, Barrett has the image. Also, he had Shigeru Miyamoto signed his switch. Look at this thing. That's awesome. Damn, if we gotta jump Tam, I'm telling you. Oh, we gotta jump and take a switch at all. So that thing on the allegedly. Yeah. Yeah, in a video. You know, we can make that interesting. I gotta switch oled. I could easily swap out that joy con. I could go to go to his house, like today, or if he's back home. Swap out the joy con? He won't even know the same way joy con just scribble on it on the bag, swap it out. Or you can make a man all rubbed off. Oh, that's a shame to him. That's a shame that the just go in there and fuck up his whole shit. Yeah. Don't even steal it for yourself. I was gonna say steal it and then use the clear one is excuse me. It rubbed off. But yeah, you can also just fucking analyze it. Rub it off yourself. You're really a villain. We love you some more. Thank you for thank you for letting me do the y'all because the eastern review bring me back. And also let me bring one next time you go to Nintendo world take me with you. Oh, let's go. Take me as your plus one. Yeah, let's go. Let's arrange a trip. Barrett you want to go? I'm fucking down. Let's go. Let's go. So let's go down that Mario coat ride, so I can kick y'all's ass. Oh. I'm saying, I think we can pitch this to Tim because first of all, Tim definitely wants to go to Nintendo world for content. Super Nintendo world review on kind of funny games cast. And then we get a lot of views. And we get expensed. Yeah. That gets a lot of views. Content creation. We also got out today tales of some phony remastered for PS4, switch, and Xbox One. The settlers, new allies for PC, wild hearts for PC, PS5 Xbox Series X, gigantosaurus, dino cart for PS5, Xbox Series X, PS4, Xbox One, switch and PC. Evil below for PC and PS4, and then farm side for PC and Apple arcade. New dates for you, Genshin Impact version 3.5 arrives on March 1st. And then bleak faith forsaken will launch on PC via steam and gog on March 10th. I watched a trailer for bleak faith this morning because I got an email about it and the email equated it to dark souls meets shadow colossus and I was like, stop, you had me at shadow of the colossus. And I launched the trailer and I was like, this looks pretty good. There you go. That's what's up. Deal of the day for you. Speaking of Sonic the Hedgehog, there's this abomination that's gone on pre orders from Mario 64. Pop taters, Sonic the Hedgehog, four inch figure is up for pre order. That is. At entertainment earth, it's $14, 99 cents for free shipping or no. $39 plus orders with code free. I don't really understand the price structure here, but put in code free shed 39 to get it for cheaper pods. So I think it's the abomination that you have here is $15, but if you want to get free shipping, you have to have an order that's $39 over. And then you use that code and stuff. So if you want to buy the idea that the idea that you see this and you're like, fuck, I want this $15 figure, but I want to get it with free shipping. Let me spend a lot more money to then get this for free shipping. Pop taters, this is basically like mister potato man, but they're trying to sell this funko pop in a weird way. And I hate it. It's a potato based. Sorry. Oh, yeah. I don't get it. It's mister potato. Yeah, you got it right. Wow, I just looked at pop tapes. I need a Google pop taters. Look at this. Look at that. They got Bob Ross. They got Bob Ross pop taters. Pop taters cut the check. They got Transformers optimus prime pop taters. It is all just mister potato head. This is all this is terrible. This is so bad. People fuck with mister potato head like that? I mean, as a kid, I love mister potato head. All you knew him from a Toy Story, honestly. So here you got Jesus Christ. Jean Simmons. Gene Simmons, Bob Ross. Is that optimus prime? I don't know what this is. I don't know what that fourth one is. Just an exploding head.

"So 1960 or 1968. I've got 1968 in front of my face. Okay. And that could be no other movie than night of the living dead. Classic George Romero film, Romero was a TV director, making TV commercials, commercial director rather. He was also making short films for Mr. Rogers neighborhood at the time. Yeah. And he was young. Yeah. I don't know how old he was, but he was pretty young guy still. I think when he made shot in that in the living dead, he was like 26 or 27. Wow. So yeah, but any standard that's still pretty young, unless you're 23. So he and his buddies were like, let's make a horror movie. But let's not make a stupid horror movie. Let's make one with like an actual plot that explores deep themes to a good movie. Let's make the first good horror movie. Well, yeah, so and we'll delve into that a little more, but that was definitely a different thing at the time and the other different thing was that all the horror movies up to that point, they were called the universal monsters from Universal Studios. You know, all the kind of the classic Frankenstein and Dracula and creature from the black lagoon and the werewolf and that was where that was mainstream horror. And George Romero comes along and says, how about zombies? And everyone said, what in the world is a zombie? And he said, well, let me define that for every future generation of movie and TV goers. Yeah, and there have been zombie movies before. But they had been things like doctor caligari's cabinet, somebody who was under the control of something someone else or something like that. There was a hypnotist or this was like the first time what we think of as zombies wherever introduced like flesh eating ghouls who were dead and come

"May be a whole lot closer than we realized Amusement parks are already experimenting with it and my next guest is working with Disney to make it a reality A lumix and augmented reality company is in talks with Disney imagineering to help create an immersive experience at Disney parks Joining me now the founder and CEO of lumix kiran Sinha Karen thank you so much for joining us We're looking at video there of you waving to buzz light year at the park And I'm so curious about how the technology actually works Are you do we have to wear glasses to see that or look at our phones This is all phone based One of the real tenets of what we have built is making augmented reality in this digital physical metaverse not only highly accurate and realistic but also very accessible And so we've moved away from the model of having to download separate apps for augmented reality And this type of technology could be injected into any app or even in some cases websites on the ecommerce side And so that is a really huge part of what we have done technically from a capabilities perspective what you're seeing there is actually real time integration on a regular mobile device of digital and physical without pre mapping or pre scanning which is something that's really not been possible I think until today So you say you're moving away from storytelling to story experiencing but it sounds like in order to experience that story we have to be looking at our phones while we're standing inside a theme park Yeah so I think in that particular example there has to be some kind of view device And so the mobile phone is the most successful way of doing it And we really think about it as the same amount of effort as when you take a photo You know some of these parks are actually the most instagrammed and photographed places in the world And so people are leveraging their phones It's a question of when they do that can we provide an experience that creates a deeper interaction and engagement with these spaces where it's not just about where you now have the power you as a participant in this metaverse or in this wider experience can actually change your interact and engage with these things that might not otherwise be feasible or possible but that digital gives us I think there's an incredible amount of power and flexibility we see in the digital world We see this manifest in gaming primarily but being able to take that and imbue that in these physical experiences has I think a huge amount of potential and it's really a window into as glasses or as the metaverse becomes more prominent What that world and what those modalities might be and feel like How likely do you think it is that brands like Disney will merge their experiences with those of other brands Like will I be able to jump from Magic Kingdom to Universal Studios And if not will the metaverse really be a place where I can experience everything on the Internet Yeah so I think that there's a few misconceptions about what the metaverse is I think primarily driven by pop culture I think the first is of course that the metaverse is this fully virtual world that's going to replace our physical reality and fundamentally at a lumix we don't believe that's the case We believe the real power and potential of the metaverse is in unifying the digital and the physical world as you saw those videos And that's really what our tech enables and the types of interactions we power I think the other part of it is this concept that all of these worlds will become completely interoperable through a single monopoly That's I think a big part of how people talk about the metaverse and fundamentally we see the metaverse evolving more similarly to the way the mobile app ecosystem has developed where they're going to be different metaverses perhaps for different IPs and for different use cases There might be a different place or way in which we work versus a socialized or play And there may actually be several versions of that pending audience And so that's really I think what the future is going to look like Several different layers or versions of the world that we can jump in and out of So what do you think the biggest barrier is right now between life today and the metaverse of the future Is it a hardware thing Is it product iteration thing the fact that AR glasses don't really exist yet Or is it a software thing You know obviously hardware and glasses will play a critical role in making this ubiquitous But I think it's actually more around the technology and the interaction specifically Technology is not yet been at a point at which digital physical interaction I think unlock real value If you look at where AR and digital physical has had the most impact and has the highest touch with the mass market it's inside of social networks It's inside of things like snap and Instagram where that's become a daily use case in a daily interaction for people It's our vision that the way this will roll out is actually creating higher quality technology that has real accuracy and unlocks that brand value but inside of existing use cases So for us whether that's the existing use cases of when you physically go to and recreational environment or to a physical location or even when you're already on a website for example and your buying something in an ecommerce experience being able to inject that little meaningful digital physical interaction right near the point of purchase I think that's what the future is going to look like Where all of these different modes will inherently have a digital physical component to it All right we'll look forward to someday heading to the Magic Kingdom to check it all out here in Sinha founder and CEO of lumix Thank.

"The universal disney was building studios and sort of focusing the movie industry Here and i got the opportunity to to move into that field and As a as a scenic artist sculptor and set design and And that's kind of how. I got my feet wet. I kinda got started. And i actually was so busy doing that. had gotten married. Of course we started having children in my life got so busy i never went back to school and i never really kinda finished my degree but rather than that i actually got to work alongside of these incredible masters That that taught me these incredible skills. some really great heroes of the of the of the industry. I really had the ability to work with an and it was through that ability of sculpture. Actually that got me my first job. in themed entertainment industry with universal and that was Universal studios base. Park here in orlando The there's this gigantic lagoon in the middle of the park Many people have been there or seen pictures of it. No that and my first role was actually building all of the artificial rock work around that lagoon. we also work in e. t. and that was the first time i actually took my sculpting skill that was used in film and television. Which you know that stuff just gets recycled after you've done shooting and frankly the general public never really gets to see it or touch it or you know so moving to a more permanent medium. Like theme parks was a was a real cool switch for me. It was much more Lasting because even after thirty years or you can just go look in the theme park in and see that work and talk quickly about the actual transition to getting over to disney. Because i i. Did you know eating a former turn. I did my research it and you go..

The Mechanics of Marketing for a Destination Organization

"I want you to tell our audience if you would please a little bit about the mechanics of a destination marketing organization. It's different than a corporation in some cases. Talk a little bit about how your funded and and who. Your constituencies are just saw the social security kind of understand unique nature of that work. Yeah definitely so. We represent a pretty much more than eleven hundred businesses within or throughout the orlando area. We are funded by tourism development taxes. So basically if someone stays in orlando's hotel you get the bed tax on your folio Contributes to how we get funded We actually serve a board as well so there's a lot of decisions get. There's a lot of city and county inclusion in all of the decision making a for organization. If you are a restaurant and attraction in orlando are you automatically part of the visit orlando collective or do you have to sort of opt in or add some funds on your own. How does how does that part. Yeah you do have to become a member within visceral though so you know we as you can imagine where big city we've got tons and tons of businesses here and range from the very big theme parks that everyone knows laws to small mom and pop shop down the street in all of them need representation in services so they opted to become a member of israel. There's different tiers of membership. And based on that we we. We do our best to support and promote all the different venues and businesses that we have aired the destination. I always find that to be one of the most interesting and challenging elements of this kind of work atkins convert we service strategist for a number of destination marketing organizations in different cities and states around the us. And and you're right. The the small independent restaurant is a member and they have needs as does universal studios or anybody else in talk about two very different audiences. It's a real challenge and you think about most businesses having much tighter target audience or target constituents than you do so i know it's got to be exciting challenging at the same time absolutely i mean each one of them has a unique story to tell though so we focus on that theme park stories is very different In the story of lake local shops is very different. But there's a unique element in each of. We do our best to provide support to both to the right audience to help them get this

And i did not have anti ends and i did not have a normal pretzel. Didn't starbucks in the park. So i'm saving money and calories and nastiness I'm certainly missing out on the yummy. Nece Oh i almost gave in at cold stone creamery because i was passing by go into the parking lot and last time i was here a couple of months ago i really wanted just a good hot fudge sundae and they were closed by the time i got there and they were open and i could hear them calling me saying we're open. I kept walking. So yeah i was being very good. Oh and then. Cinnabon came up on my left. I'm like all gonna could smell it. What i said no and i do a little bit more news collie required. I know i'm sorry So you know when you walk from the parking lot and you turn right to go to universal studios versus left to go to islands of adventure. There's a bunch of little shops that we're on the right side in city. I'm talking about instead. You walk and you'll or the water is to the left because you're walking toward universal studios. Correct the shots on the right. And eventually you're going to come to the nba experience and it's probably the nfl are the no it's is maybe you're right and it's something is new at universal so you're probably right i forget yes okay so anyway. They were a bunch of little stores that used to be there I think one of them wasn't the pie. Was like an office shirt place and they had a p q a pick p a posture era exclamation. Point you for now. There may have been flip-flop store there. But this what had like cutesy stuff but anyway all those stores are gone and that entire strip is now the universal universal studios store. Yes so that's what they were building remember. We were were you there with us. We're we're like what are they building the assets. Yes and no new. No one would tell so. It is I did a video on this as well. I didn't post it. But i was just sharing with some of the agents so they would know what we have in the store but i winning on the far left. And there's just this huge room of harry potter stuff and then you go to another section and it's urine springfield with simpson's stuff and then they had generic cartoons and then they have It looks huge huge. It is huge. And so i wondered about the other universal store that they had that was further by big fire. What is still there but that one. They call legacy universal legacy jane. Yeah and. I don't know if it's a different store or if it's going to carry different merchant is like i'm thinking it might carry stuff like jaws and i love lucy and you know some of the retired type themes 'bout that makes sense for what else Twister i dunno Nap i did get to go through the store really upset that i never got a twister shot glass. See where i can see where you got. But but i do love retro. Now if it's retro. I like i like that Cabana bay vibe. Where it's got that irish sprint. Or what is it. Is it irish spring. I don't even remember anymore. Zest says so been. It's got that fifties look then. Got that really cool art work. I i like that kind of retro. Feel so hopefully it. Has that kind of stuff brady bunch type of Designs witness anyways so sounds good so if they wanted to get with sharpie and Your setup with that. I'm going to wrap up the show. I'd like to thank the vacations. Sponsoring the podcast. If you have comments or questions for us you can send those to us at comments at most chat dot net. "No, no, I've never wait in line for concert tickets. Never never done that. Well, not a lot of people have anymore if you're going, but even Internet even in the older days, you know, like, you know, 30 years ago, whatever. When you would like, go down to the yard and line up for never did it. Now the longest line I was ever in, was proud about an hour and a half for the Simpsons ride at Universal Studios in Florida. I believe it was universal Studios. I waited in line for an out with Jonathan and my wife. The Simpsons ride. Never doing that ever again ever, ever ever made was okay but not for 90 minutes worth. I can't even think of the longest have waited in line. I don't know. Ah, theme park somewhere. I don't know. I would never be for any food item, probably right. Uh, my line to get in the stadium just gets a 35 minutes to enter the bill Stadium. Right? OK, so that might be it for you? Yeah. Typically think of we're talking. It's a really, you know, the longest line you've waited in it. My guess is it is for tickets to something. Maybe you're one of those people like who camped out overnight for playoff tickets one time or there's a flight cancelation and you've got to get in line to go to the counter to get new Internet And sometimes those can be long. That's right. Yeah. Never had that I may have had flight cancelations. I've never waited in line playoff tickets. I've never slept overnight. I'm not sure that I ever would. I've seen sure Chef Ski Ville at Duke. But again, I'm not sure that I would actually want to pitch a tent and sleep overnight, waiting for tickets to a game. So, Yeah, it's whatever theme parks you know, Disney Universal. All that stuff where you wait in line for half hour 45 minutes. Our You know the popular roller coasters all that stuff, man. I would We have a white castle. Did you have one in Auburn? No, we have one of them. There's nothing, nothing cancel. No, I don't think it's just a downstate thing. Yeah, The closest one's got to be Albany, New York area further down. I don't know. I didn't realize that we have one of my hometown on Long Island. And honestly, White Castle was, you know the bar's open before? Not that I was out till four. But you get done it one or two. Whatever. And if there's literally there was no place open to get food, but White Castle That's when you're really hungry. That is like break glass in case of emergency. Not a big fan of the burgers never really cared for them. Yeah, they were cheap and you walk away with like a sackful. You know, you get like eight of those little squares. And you're down about three a.m.. That's the only time we would ever go to White Castle. I've got amazingly, though it's still there to this day, so it's been there. I mean, as long as I'm alive, it's been in the same spot. Closest ones appear to be in Allentown, Pennsylvania. It's like Philadelphia area, right, so that's Kind of far away. Yeah, Yeah. So you know what? Get the kids get in the car this weekend. Take a nice little what? Six hour drive to Allentown. There you go. And you can experience White Castle. Don't have the kids eat it, though, because All right. When we get back, we'll talk a little bit about the bills news from yesterday. You're not really a huge surprise. I mean it was according to ride but it was fantastic. I mean that. That is an understatement. It was it was like part of old universal. It was really you know it was corny but it was cute. But i like that one and back to the future what before it was simpson's and trivia. What was it before that. Oh i don't now anyone hannah bar yes bureau but it was only that for a brief moment right that or was it millions. It was hanna barbera. I thought it was thought it was in santa barbara. Oh it was Jimmy neutron vera was minions see jimmy neutron. I think jimmy neutron and hanna-barbera were the same ride. Now you're talking now. I think we've done this before. I'm gonna look it up. And then steve. So my jimmy. Neutron opened in two thousand and three the simulator later ride replaced hanna-barbera that makes sense quickest ride turnaround in park. "Section of disneyland into like pleasure island and it was like projections on all the buildings and dj in a band. One section of flynn's arcade and like dancing with characters. Lauren loves dancing with characters. I'm like a small child. Get out of your kid. My my turn. Buzz me next me next stitch stretch. He's a he's a bad little boy. He's fine my i don't mean it that way. I just meet mr rock. Only i understand okay. So i'm next. Can we talk real quick about veloce coaster coming this going to be crazy. Who's gonna ride it. Oh gosh yes. I have to write it at once. Although i read i was right i was reading about it today again because i posted an article by the end of it. I know. I don't know. I have to get my strategy down like i need to probably eat something so i have something in my stomach and then i have to heavily drug myself or something to self. Don't be on the opposite side. Of where steve's gonna throw an according because i was reading it like it's like zero to seventy and two-point some odd seconds and then it's got Some like the steepest drop or let's like an eighty degree decline after a does like some type of role and i was like. Yeah so. I'll do it once other wants to just so i can experience it. I'll take one for the team for my clients And then based on my reaction to it will determine whether i can assure it's going to be awesome love the i love the thrill of the rise. I just don't like the throwing up of the rides part. It's my only thing. Because i'm getting a little old now. I don't know i'm the same way because i'm like. Oh this is awesome. And then i start to feel nauseous man. Why is this nausea thing to kick in. So i got to figure that out but right yeah definitely question. Mark definitely i. I love coasters. Oh it's going to be so awesome. All right multi favorite. I know everyone said hagrid sharp sharp. He didn't go yet. I looked at that sharpie mine's easy rip red rocket. Hate the god. That i just. I think it's just a really cool ride or you'll have no problem on really cool rise. I can't do it though i do. I still want to override Sharpie we lost you. Know sharpy lost u. s. o. Sharpies was talking about reprised ride rocket. Which is you get to pick your own song. There's a hidden soundtrack where you can pick songs that aren't listed. You have to type in a code. We talked about it on a previous show. Every or liz other you your back. Yeah he's dropping the. It's it's a bummer. So so what about replied rocket. I i just i. I love the music i love. Yeah i love the launch launches support. That hurts straight up. If if launch wasn't there i'd be fine with that ride own. See i love the low moving up straight up. i can't do. It is yeah it starts out horrible starts out scary and then goes straight down then amazing after that. If i could just bypass that whole beginning part i'd be fine. See i love that part. I do love that part. Bins is just. It's torture lisa g remember the time that you held everybody back waiting for me to get there Because you thought. I wanted to ride it women. I made you right at the time. I wrote it only the second time i wrote it. I only because i felt bad because he everybody waited. Well you do what you gotta do. Yeah you're vip guide. And i was like all right. I'm reid and then i at the end i was like oh that was bad. It's fun is definitely fun. It is that once you get past the front top yes. I'm good lisa. what's yours okay. So i do enjoy hagrid. I would pick hagrid over rip ride rocket but because rip ride is a little rougher me but if i had an opportunity to do a ride over and over it's going to be doctor. Dooms freefall really. Yeah interesting i owe. It makes me giddy. i love it. it so this is the right. It's kinda like It's the opposite of tower of terror. So if you know that where it drops you this one you start stationary at the bottom and whips you up the tower and then from there it drops you so that's where the the fearful comes in and when you go all the way up you swear you're gonna go touch the moon and it just i love it love at your feet dangling and then get this beautiful view of everything. It's cool at night. Nope everything about it. Love it. Except i don't like how it takes so long to to reset. Nope i'm afraid of heights. That wants not happened in for. I never been on that the tuna. Do you like things that launch up or do you like things that drop. i can take either Honestly you can put me on a combination of tower of terror and ear fall. And i'll be fine. Just romi up broken down through meet up and now i'm okay on tower because you go up and down inside. You don't see how high you are until the doors open. The doors are only open for a second screaming with your shot anyway or sometimes they're not open at all. Sometimes you launch up to the door. What you're sequences right so you don't have that like i could not do a where i'm looking out the whole time. No i'd be crying it's It does it tickles. My stomach and so. I mean being able to see it. It does frighten me but it's a good frighten You've got to have complete faith in the harnessed but Love that ride. Yeah my girls that wanted to also of the ho- coaster but oh that's good one alec the hawk we resorts no retired retired right aired rides.

Also lord i have catfish but i also have a second lowest you secondary else. Let's want to go. I gotta go ahead into hito agenda down table sidewalk. Yep see lauren. We're channeling each other same thing. I was antos mexican. it's at city. Walk the tableside guacamole. It's a big restaurant usually even. If there's a way we've been able to get in really quickly. And i think that if if you remember universal set up nicely it's kind of like disneyland california so if you're in the park and you're looking for dinner just walk out of the park and you're right inside city walk and then go to any he does or go to fish and have dinner women if you wanna go right back in if you if you still have time you don't. You're not stuck to having to eat in the park but for some reason that gate people feel like they need. That's part of my problem. Because i eat in city walk all the time like if universal nine hundred ten times i'm gonna eaten city walk. I love the as. I always do the table sidewalk and i go back and forth. I'll do fajitas. Sometimes and they're enchiladas are really good that appetizer that with the indie sausage hot cheese. So that's a meal in itself. It is very very very filling. And i always eat yours. You always get that night picket. You're too yeah yeah ok. Works out well from it. I'm like all lisa. you're getting case. Oh can i now. Now know sharpy Sharp you lost your internet again which you sound like a robot chirpy okay. I don't think i went. What are you have nope. Okay so i'm going with the kitchen eaten any kitchen. Shin is located in the hard rock hotel so resort property. And i i stick with my my steaks. And i've had both new york strip and the fillet mignon both are served and prepared similarly with a red wine reduction Or odu and then they've got the finger lean roasted potatoes and they have the grill broccoli. Any i mean it's right up my alley. This is perfect for me and with the dipping juice. You can order an extra side and this is. It's so good and it's like thirty eight dollars which is not terrible honestly. It's not terrible. And they have good brewed iced tea and they actually have a great chef and they have great service service ever had bad certain ceremony service. Yeah and i traditionally get either the burger or the filet mignon there. It's good it's good. They're very accommodating. I remember we had an issue with Allergies allergies and the chef warren. With us until it was figured out while member he actually went upbringing. Two entrees yeah Whenever really good yeah. They brought what was ordered as well as hey. Why don't you try this. It's my own special recipe is nice. Yeah and everything was great highly. Recommend i agree. That's a good pack. Yep kitchen and you know. I always think of anti he does But i i guess. I'm more into the appetizers. As i couldn't think of an entree that i really liked as i like the glock and i like the caso and and i don't remember what i get when i when i eat. I i don't know if i get angela's i don't know i really don't know so that's didn't pick that one. We need to split something next time so we can app up or maybe a couple of. Something's yeah this is why traveling with you is good yup and down all right. Did we retrieve sharpie that he managed to get back on a dirt. We thought we lost to the dark side. Yeah for some reason. I skype keeps dropping me. I don't know why but we'll deal with it all right okay. So did we hit. Everyone's restaurant i lost. Track has went out of order. Yes okay and were moving onto attractions current attractions. What's your favorite artist. Most wonderful attraction at universal orlando resort zoran hissy an aggregates man. Aggregates magical motor whatever fastened ride in all of orlando magic and motorbike adventure. Yes she has spoken steve. Yeah lauren liar in saint channel and get like so haggard magical creature motorbike adventure. I've only been on one time. I've only been once And it was during it was during the day. So i still wanna read it at night and it was amazing was so good and i i feel like because the whole thing with just the right but then the the extra special thing that you don't wanna know about is the extra special thing is like icing on the cake. That just takes it over the top so awesome. It's just amazing. Yeah so that right is amazing. I love it. I'm looking forward to toronto over at magic kingdom. Yeah i actually think that's the thing that's gonna come closest to type a lot of the technology the way that feels and the way that's gonna trans gonna look at night and then i like the music. Disneyland had a big tron event and they did all the projections on one of the back streets and they had the music and like a big party at night and that was still legal dance party man typically not one for dance parties but i think that was the dance party. Sharpy the so the party fan. You've never gone but disney dance party with me then but this is your wreck. I've not the disneyland. Like turned in like this whole.

"History is written by the winners by men early editors of science fiction anthologies choice to exclude by women and in doing so made many believe that women did not write science fiction in the genres earliest years. This is just one example. And by no. Means the only one mallory mira self-confessed monster lava and film. Ned discovered a similar story in one of her favourite monsters. Millicent patrick was one of disney's earliest female animators and went on to design one of the greatest film monsters of the creature from the black lagoon but a jealous smell. Hollywood monsters and the lost legacy of millicent. Patrick and reestablish. Millicent of monster design mallory. Thank you for joining us. But before we get stuck into things would you please introduce yourself to our listeners. high Yeah thank you so much for having the ottoman cited to to talk about this with you. Three i m author of lady from the black lagoon an fulltime author. And i'm also fellow podcasters. I host the show reading glasses every week with my friend. brea grant. what did you hope to achieve by. Unearthing the story of million patrick and setting the record straight about her contribution to monster design. Well a few things honestly the impetus behind me working on in in writing from the black lagoon was just i wanted to know. Millicent has been my hero. Since i was a teenager and i wanted to satisfy my own personal curiosity i found out about her when i was seventeen and it just seemed creature from the black lagoon like nobody even knew if she was still alive. She didn't have a website. She didn't have a wikipedia entry. Nothing about her online. So i personally just really really wanted to know at as i started digging into her life and her work and in this book i i also just. I wanted people to know that we've always been here. You know i. I actually started working on this book before the metoo movement happened and while i think it's amazing that there's such a huge push right now to get more women in front of the camera behind the camera writing doing everything women everywhere in cosigned for me but i also think it's really important to have people know that women have always been here. We have a legacy here and millicent. Patrick is proof. That and if i could only unearth her story and bring it to the world than i could could prove it is funny. You say that. Because i remember i was a massive star trek fan still but i remember in high school being completely obsessed with original series star trek and then discovering that d c fontana was a woman and i was like women have been there from the beginning. We right star trek. Yeah so i. I definitely can get on board with excitement. It changes everything. I mean finding out that a woman who designed this incredible monster that i became completely obsessed with it changed my life. It made me realize up until that point all of my heroes in the monster world. Where met you know tom. Savini rick baker. Dick smith jack pierce. It never even occurred to me that women did those things and seeing just one single photo of seeing a woman working on the creature from the black lagoon. It broke my brain open. It was like being struck by lightning. And it you can. You can make a direct line from that moment in time in front of my computer. Seven seventeen to me becoming a filmmaker later on up reading a bit about medicine on. You mentioned that you back. Then she didn't have a wikipedia entry. She does have one now on your on it as well. Yes i mean we're competing is basically all from the bottom up until that point there was no there was really no biographical information about her and the stuff that was out there was largely false Sometimes because of Militants own she liked to fabricate biographical information about which was very fun for me to deal with as biographer But it's now now actually people who she is and she has a wikipedia. Entry people You google tons of stuff comes up. It's really it makes me really really happy. So how did she become raised from history in the first ice so the her boss at the universal studios monster shop and she worked there in the early nineteen fifties was a man named bud west more and he was part of a very very famous big family of makeup artist. The west morris His father actually. George west was the man who invented the idea of a makeup department so they were huge. Deal in hollywood at the time he had a massive amount of power and influence not just at universal but in the film world is a whole unfortunately he was also known for taking people's credit being very jealous of the other artists that worked with him if they were more successful or more talented than he was which wasn't hard to do And she designed creature and they shot the movie and it became very clear that the movie was going to be a huge hit. They the universal studios publicity department wanted to send millicent on a press tour to promote it and up until that point in history know in the fifties. There was no twitter. There was no. Imdb there is no way for people to really look into the details of of credits on films. You know back then. There was no like ten minutes end. Crawl at the end of a movie like we get now. There was only like these cards that gave the heads of department Credit for the things that they did so no matter. What but didn't design at on a movie increase in the credits creature. It says makeup. Bud west more So he never was challenged. People always just assume that he designed everything that came out of his shop

Disneyland Kills Its Annual Pass Program to Lure in Tourists

"The happiest place on earth shared a bit of sad news for disneyland devotees. Anyway if you have an annual pass to the park or ever wanted to buy one well. You're out of luck in early. January disneyland abruptly announced that its annual pass program was over well. The company said it was sunsetting annual passes which is so disney right. The program let guests pay anywhere from around four hundred fourteen hundred a year for access to both disneyland and nearby disney california adventure park. Both parks in southern california have been closed since last march because of the corona virus pandemic so folks eagerly waiting for the park to reopen. And the chance to buy an annual pass for next year. We're doubly sorry disney said anyone who's passes extended beyond the shutdown date would be automatically refunded in pass holders will get discounts on food and merchandise from disney's retail outfits. Through the end of february. Now disneyland doesn't publicly release sales numbers but it's believed that they sell around one of those passes a year that means. There are a lot of disappointed disney fans out there wondering why well it all comes down to the numbers and money. Of course both disneyland and california adventure around twenty eight million visitors a year according to estimates spine engineering firm. That's a whole lot of foot traffic on main street. Usa and that traffic is good. News for disney. If those millions of visitors are spending a lot on food and souvenirs while they're at the park and people who spend the most in the park. Well they tend to be tourists from out of town which visitors spend less money in the park residents of southern california who also make up the bulk of annual pass holders according to the la times. So while you'd think that selling a million annual passes might be profitable for disney the program is actually clogging the park with people who are spending less on food and stuffed animals hence the annual pass programme has gone the way of mu fossa. Sorry that was that meanwhile at disney world in orlando the annual pass program was closed to new buyers last summer. Theme park experts. Say it's for the same reason. The park is crowded with folks who live nearby and spend less in the parks. But anyone who already has a pass in hand for this year can still use it. Because disney world is currently open disney's move has made another theme park come out and assure visitors that won't be axing its annual pass programme universal studios with parks in. You guessed it orlando in southern california after disney made their announcement universal studios hollywood tweeted. Hey pass members we heart you. That may have been a good marketing. Move on their part but for diehard disney fans and there are a lot of you out there universal studios just can't replace that disney experience disney executives say they will be rolling out alternatives to the annual pass. Soon in the meantime visitors will have to settle regular old day passes

"They'll the loneliness of being there without women. It was kind of a humorous scene where mcgrady is shown to have a sex doll that was later removed as something. That was too distracting by carpenter. Now one of the pre carpenter screenwriters. I don't know who john carpenter didn't want to name the person but try to frame the alien in the end as he positive symbiotic force rather than a destructive force carpenter. Happy to be a nonconformist. He was kind of a lifelong loner. He wasn't fond of a message of symbiosis. But if you want to see a version of that concept and you want to see women in version of the thing there's a twenty eighteen film called the nile. Elation that has a mostly female cast that does explore these symbiosis theme that this other screenwriter tried to present but was rejected by carpenter. Now getting back to things. Shooting took place primarily in juneau alaska as well as stewart british columbia and carpenter and his crew endured harsh cold lack visibility at various times carpenter and several members of the second crew went without heat or electricity or running water for several days at a time while they were scouting locations and filming exteriors using acting doubles warming sheds and vats of soup were needed at pretty much all times especially because the trailer heating was inadequate. Everybody pretty much got sick. Interiors were done mostly at universal studios but they refrigerated the studios as much as he could to keep things cold. Not quite a freezing. But they did have to contend with things like chemicals in the air and kerosene smoke filling their lungs so it wasn't any picnic either if you're a carpenter. Fan does have his theme of people trapped and having to fight their way out. It's very familiar in that respect than this speaks to carpenters own years of being confined physically or in his career. His love of horror is kind of entrapment. As well. Fear of he feels that. That's a universal. Fear that all audiences the world over can relate to you carpenter in particularly though has a fear of being controlled by other people because he feels that losing that autonomy that he has means losing his identity or the identity of the art that he's trying to create carpenter always seen as kind of an outsider looking in he's not somebody who's able to assimilate very freely. He resists a conformity in favor of maintaining his individuality which is why the thing is something that makes him personally. Afraid now. it's not always easy for carpenter to make this movie. They reduced campbell's characters from thirty seven to twelve for the screenplay but carpenter still felt challenged because there are too many personalities to have to give direction to for particular scenes too difficult to photograph all of them especially when they called for all of them to appear. In a specific room indoors carpenter felt that the middle of the film is also to talky so we started to restructure it. He decided to reshoot several scenes outdoors taking up to the snowy locations to provide more outdoor experience with.

Interview with Daniel Shoeman

"I'm sitting here with a gentleman named Daniel Schuman pronounce that crackling corrector, Daniel Shuman and actually Ganal reached out to me several months ago after hearing the plan strong podcast. Because he had a friend who was suffering from I believe it was some krones or else right of colitis and you were wondering if I if I had any advice or recommendations and I and I sent you a a whole protocol. It was based on a woman out of Columbus Ohio doctor Dr Pam Popper and did anything ever come of that. So you know one thing I've learned in this whole journey of mine is that I can't change people I could try my best I try to present as much information as I can. It's much. That's backed up by science. Ultimately. It was up to my friends who make decision I think. Obviously. He's in his own journey and he's going to have to figure things out and unfortunately I haven't been too successful within thus far. But I, believe in laying the groundwork at least and hopefully giving him some of the tools to come to his own decision one day and maybe See, some relief that he can get because he really is suffering a tremendous amount and the and you. You mentioned a little earlier that. So you you've had some phenomenal success and we'll get into kind of your story and your journey. But when you had that kind of success, you WANNA scream it from the mountaintops eight and. Because it seems so obvious that Oh my gosh I mean this is going to cure everything that ails you. And yet, people tend to push back a little bit right and so what have you found is kind of the smartest tactic as far as with friends, family co workers, and trying to impress US lifestyle upon them. So I think the biggest thing that is an individual canoe is to lead by example to show, and it's pretty obvious anyone who's seen me who's followed me the last couple of years has seen a tremendous improvement in my life in every aspect of it and if they can see. Especially, someone who knew me well, beforehand, they knew I was not a fitness guy I was not someone who Generally worked very hard on himself. especially when it came to nutrition health fitness and if they can see that someone like me can do something like this and the positive impact, it's had on every aspect of my life. Medically. Socially emotionally, my relationship, my children, my relationship with my wife, my intimacy it's really an unbelievable. Thing to see and. I think was a little bit guilty in the beginning of being a little bit maybe to gung-ho and trying to because as you said, it does seem so obvious it seems that there's so much science. This. Isn't just a fad this the way I see it. Hopefully learning throughout my whole life and I not I'm not a scientist. I'm not a doctor. I'm not gonNA pretend that I have all the answers to everything. But it seems pretty clear to me that this is something real and I know you've seen it. I've seen it so many times with people who have. Not, only prevented diseases but reversed it and have regained their lives and have become empowered to do something and to really change their lives in the people's lives around them. So. Yeah. Just being that example showing people this is something to do you know when people talk to you about protein and you know that's a sure you get that all the time where's your protein come from when you're eating a plant based? Diet. And if I could lead by example, say, Hey, look protein deficient you're not could show the my numbers from when I get blood work at the doctor's office. And that's that's where I'm at right now I was just trying to be that example China show hey, this is an alternative I'm not going to. Have the Hubris to tell you, I know all the answers to everything but this is at least an alternative if you WANNA go down. So many of the popular roots these days. This is a way to do it mindful way to do it. Really. Isn't I don't think it's not difficult honestly at the end of the day and. Just, it's possible as an alternative. So let's let's talk about that for a SEC. So you said you don't think it's that difficult what? Let's. Let's discuss your journey a little bit show. Where were you not mistaken? You started this journey into how April two thousand seventeen is that right? That makes it able to thousand seventeen I was twenty nine years old what inspired it? So I mean. It's a good question I. I was obese most of my life morbidly obese most of my life and every day was really a struggle was there's a lot of discomfort when that big you know my my biggest I was about three hundred and fifty five pounds. Not Comfortable way to live. So right off the bat, just being that big I don't believe I was ever complacent with a something that let me ask you this. So you say it wasn't comfortable being that big. What are some of the things that somebody that is? Three fifty and what are you? Like six, one, a non five ten okay. Okay. So three fifty, five, five, ten, what are some of the things that are uncomfortable almost everything just being in public being taking the train in on a normal day squeezing next to people you know at its most extreme I went on a family vacation to universal studios in the in Florida and I was very excited to go in this Harry Potter I. They have their this isn't in big castle. We waited online and get to the ride and we go to sit down and the harness won't close on me substitute big to fit in the.

"Get excited. Choo Choo Train. ooh, you. Pay Pipe that leads us to the end of our news segment and for funds. As we thought, it'd be cool to just kind of wrap up with a couple of quick hit news items that happened to be all Nintendo related in. So, if you guys missed it earlier this week a drop for the Super Mario lying on black milk went live and we talked about this one they announced it and you're into. Fashion of the FEM variety I like the starter s let's they have a lot of stop you can check out, but they also announced the animal crossing Collab-, which is going to be happening. So this is Super Fun as well. So if you guys want to showcase your love for either animal crossing or Super Mario Brothers, you may want to check out the black milk line secure and there was also to more announcing Super Nintendo world is going to be happening in twenty twenty one. So this is an old trailer Super Nintendo world. Obviously, this is going. To be in Japan, there's one supposed to be happening universal studios in Orlando but because of the covid nineteen pandemic, it has been delayed worldwide. What they did today was confirmed that they're like come hell or high water. We're going to open in two thousand and twenty one, and they revealed some of the food items that you're going to be able to try when you go to Super Nintendo world. So let me show you think tool dress. Suggest I mean they sold that dress in a shop in their blackmail trout by so much stuff is capped already like. The the two things I got are already kept the presale. But. You can still or you can still order those things in select sizes. But the food goes I don't know those UK. Those are those are pancake sandwiches what What. So we're looking at. Ladies and gentlemen of some of the themed cafes and other sources they're going to be having some of the they're showcasing our these Mario and Luigi Pancake sandwiches in the pancakes are like tacos but filled with whipped cream. Are Their hats won as an m one as an L. One's read one's green who would have said and Mario doesn't want these photos to be bigger. I apologize everybody watching Mario's pancakes. Sandwich has strawberries and cream and it says who's come. That's a cap joke says Oak Dokey and they're some looking green fruit and cream I'm not sure what exactly is going on yeah I don't know what those fruits are. There's apple or lime I'm. A super mushroom drink and a tropical bottle and a mess moustached fruit creams soda because a little. Alcoholic? Be grateful was bring your own. To. Chat. Hopefully. It just looks really cute and the store is obviously look all Mario we on the inside, all the chairs, little toadstools and I now this is GonNa. Be My happy place. I'm ready. We're definitely going to do what's good games field trip to Super Nintendo World Orlando when it finally opened. Hundred percent. Rona. No likes he rona. And your the worst get out of here. Okay Only Rona would take a hint. All right. Our last piece of Nintendo news was this little news blurb that dropped this week about Nintendo treehouse spotlighting Jairo Warriors, age of calamity, and then a little bit more info about. Three Pittman three, the deluxe version, Jairo Warriors. So age of calamity is this an expansion it and actually get a chance to watch this this is the. Way tecmo warriors spin off. So it's like real warriors, but it's called age, of course, because it takes place one hundred years before breath of the wild. Yes. So what's GonNa be really interesting about this game it's GonNa show in deep dive into some of the characters and we're GonNa see like personal interactions and here a little bit more about their backstory. Narrative perspective. This is cool but the showcase today the Nintendo. treehouse showed her Bosa style fighting. Zelda showed link fighting a little bit young EMPA-. That is going to be hitting co rocks and the weapons won't break. They. Also, the weapons work in this game. And I showed a little bit about of the map in the weapon upgrades system and it actually looks really good. I mean I did not like the first Jairo warriors primarily because the multiplayer was really bad someone had a play on the way you gain pat and someone could play on. TV. was like the way they designed it why they did that I don't know Nintendo Intendo, but it's really fun and the game play it looks great and some of the places that they visited. To see loan ranch, you could see all the locations essentially from breath wild before the the fan. So most of these villages are intact. The buildings aren't all destroyed. You get to see some of Aksu Games like an ochre enough time Linlin ranch, for example, AC, the same buildings and the little sheds. If it looks good. It looks like all the kicking, ass. Zelda out here. Making her keep and look at that. So she is primarily her Sheikha Asleep abilities which every character has access to you. But hers are a little bit more epic like her bomb for example, is like A. Bomb that spits out many bombs and it's pretty global. Yeah. Yeah. I think this is going to be fun. This actually comes out November twentieth and pick me comes out October thirtieth. So these are two. I mean, I think this game's much bigger than pigment three personally. But yeah, and it's an awesome set up their sleeve, which is nice. It's interesting that they're choosing to focus on this game. Because I think a lot of people were hoping for an update on what's happening with breath of the wild to not to say that we need like a full game play reveal or anything like that. Clearly, this game isn't going to be happening until two thousand, twenty one at the earliest but it would have been nice to get like a teaser or something in conjunction with this Jairo. Warriors announcement, and this is a little bit of A. Guy When this game was announced. Feel like those were a month ago a few weeks ago. was they said, yeah. Sorry. We know. We know what you really want. Just please be patient you really really want. Yeah, they. Yeah but. We can't give out to you yet. The thing. Thanks bye. Yeah I. Think it'll be good. It'll be a little guitar over. It also face. This is an appetizer main course exactly at Obama's or Bros a kick ass you. She got a hack and slash the lightning, their little shield she's like mosquito. been and kill you. If you want to see the game play that we're referring to, of course, youtube dot com slash what's good games or you can go to the Nintendo YouTube account as well. But did you spend a lot of time with hydro warriors doesn't Feel like your style of game and please tell me if I'm inaccurate, you're not wrong. No I played like I said, a little bit of the I went back. When was on we you but the problem with you is this is kind of Game I. Think I could only played multiplayer because it's just more entertaining play someone but someone had a play on the you game had an some could play on the TV and so as you can imagine that didn't work very well Jason was playing on the way you gamepad because of course, he was and I had the Nice Big Shiny TV. His game, he knows his role absolutely his game play on the game pad was really laggy. It didn't look very good I mean it was the Game Pad Right? So I played it. It was fun. But the reason I'm more interested in this one is because of again, it's going expand on the story. Breath of the While we're GONNA get a deeper dive into characters like are both saw relationship she had with Zelda and Zelda's relationship with these folks and that's I. Think we're the the excitement comes from for me.

Breaking Through as a Challenger Brand in a Dominating Industry with Michael Landa

"Michael say what's up to fire nation and share something interesting about yourself that most people don't know probably feared asked people my office they would not know was trying to think earlier is one thing that they definitely would not know about me and that is that up until about I'd say probably a couple of years ago I could still do a standing backflip in my office. So Yeah. I kinda grew up as a competitive gymnast when I was in high school and then I was non-american swimmer. So I mean swimming was really my main sport. But I competed a lot on the floor exercises in gymnastics as well, which is something people most people don't know about me. I've just always had this feeling that if I ever tried a standing backflip immediately tear my MC l. that's just a thought that I I don't know why I had that thought that's why I said for years ago try. Not Going to happen. So fire nation as I shared the talking all about teaching an old dog new tricks and my guest today has launched a company called New Loewe, which is a combination of the words nutrition and love. So that Super Cool New Loewe and why Michael I mean, you went to business school why did you decide to start a pet food company before the PETRIE company? Kind of the Genesis of the Food Company was a company I started? Before new I, I'd spent the early part of my corporate career working for big companies. I used to work for is your oxen in General Electric, and then most recently with universal studios in. Two thousand one that I was in L. A. and I was taking a quick break and. I found I. Don't know how many of you have been through the experience of trying to find a pet sitter for your pet. I went through an experience, sperry the detail, but basically led me to leave universal and start what became the nation's largest at home pet sitting dog-walking training business. Is based in Los Angeles and we. I spent about a decade running that company and was it was in and of itself was a really cool business about one, hundred, eighty five. Pet Sitters dog walkers doing roughly eleven thousand a month all over Greater La, and you know the significance of that was I was you know we're on the front lines of feeding a large population of dogs and cats whether parents were traveling and over the course of the decade I really started to see a huge demand for pet sitters who could administer at home insulin shots, and this is for diabetic dogs and cats, and we eventually it started to stress the business where I couldn't hire that tax and and trained my sitters to give shots fast enough and you know one thing I was trained academically as a biomedical engineer. So I I can be annoying and in my ability to kind of. Dig for root causes and that's exactly what I did in this case is you know I started asking myself like what what's happening why are so many pets getting sick why are so many dogs and cats getting diabetes and? I went out and talking to vet schools and scientists around the country and you know what I learned wasn't I'm GonNa say it wasn't really rocket science but it was you know essentially that are pets are living in in their own version of fast food nation we have you know we we have a country where four. A large large conglomerates control over eighty percent of the pet food sales in the United States and you know these are the very companies that make candy, chocolate, Jelly and cereal right. These are these are the four that control eighty percent of our pet food distribution the US. So you know. Really. The majorities are really low in meet their high in carbohydrates, these high glycemic ingredients. They're marketed very well but unfortunately, dogs and cats can't use the food for themselves otherwise, they choose products that are high in meat. That's one of the reasons you know I. Before I even gave it much thought I was leading Los Angeles moving to Austin Texas and I started new Loewe with the objective of creating a food platform. That's more species Pacific for dogs and cats at high in meet low in carbs and look like

No trick-or-treating this Halloween in Los Angeles County due to COVID-19

"Have some news that involves Children here in Los Angeles County. Where Randy the county government, the Board of Supervisors and fake doctor Barbara Ferrer have officially canceled Halloween. That's right. There will be no Halloween. There will be no trick or treating. There will be no West Hollywood Carnaval. There will be no Halloween horror nights at Universal Studios. It's all being canceled because of the cove it what's not permitted this Halloween, which is less than two months away. No door to door trick or treating because it's very difficult to maintain proper social distancing on porches and it front doors, especially in neighborhoods that have lots of trick or treaters. Also not permitted is something called trucker Trading where Children go from car to car instead of door to door Now, I've never heard of trunk or treating, but that sounds like some stranger danger right there. Gatherings or parties with non household members. That's not permitted, even if they're conducted outdoors, no carnivals, no festivals, no live entertainment and, of course, no haunted house attractions. In fact, the haunted hayride in Griffith Park is gonna be a drive through this year. So what is allowed You can have an online party in a contest like online zoom costume contest. You could be in. Ah, following car Parade, Khun even have Ah, dress up your car in a costume and have judges Judge it. You can have a Halloween movie night at the drive in theater. Maybe they go see earnest, scared, stupid Halloween theme meals at outdoor restaurants that that's something you can do as long as that restaurant is operating with the protocols that they operate outdoors. Even when it's windy out. Following themed art installations and outdoor museums that's going to be allowed. You're allowed to dress up your home with Halloween decorations, but you can't actually enjoy Any Halloween. Now It doesn't say anywhere that you can't eat candy. But imagine eating the amount of candy that the average person eats during Halloween, and you're not walking off those calories by trick or treating.

"Welcome to our podcast. It's where we asked some of the entertainment industry's brightest minds how Hollywood might reinvent itself as it comes out of the pandemic coming up filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. But first, we ask our guests in every episode, what they would do to fix Hollywood and we've talked with actors, directors, executives, and writers. But, what about the people on the frontlines the below the line workers as they're called in the business, they do vital work behind the scenes and they have a lot to say about what needs to change Hollywood is going to thrive after the pandemic members of the gig economy people that are creative professional's in. Hollywood, we're essentially chewed up and we are spit out. We are treated like we are widgets we are commodities that can be replaced. That's Zach Arnold he's a film and TV editor. He's worked on shows like empire burn notice and glee he got a lot of attention for a blog post he wrote about what could happen when production resumes the title Dear, Hollywood? We don't WANNA go back. To normal normal wasn't working. It had come from me having hundreds of conversations with people that all said the same thing because of the pandemic I had this immense amount of self awareness of how much I hated my life before all this started. Now that I'm not driving I realized how much I hated my commute now that I'm not working eighteen hours, I realized how much time I lost with my children and I received hundreds upon hundreds of responses I'm still getting them, and I still can't sift through all of them. Arnold's blog is called optimize yourself and gives advice about work life balance, which is really important in an industry that is notorious for grueling hours with no guarantee of steady employment. Arnold shares a story that he heard from film editor Walter Merch, he worked on the Godfather and apocalypse. Now, it was a famous story back in the mid to late seventies about a film that was vastly over budget and had very tight deadlines and everybody was just getting pushed to the limit with twenty hour days and they went to one of the heads of post production at Universal Studios and said, we have to do something about these demands. Everybody is dropping like flies and the response was get more flies. Nothing has changed in the last forty years. It's all about everybody having to create a miracle such that today's Miracle Dust becomes tomorrow's expectation and whatever it takes however many people it takes to figure this out they throw people at the problem and as soon as somebody can't deliver anymore they find somebody else that will and I think this is a systemic issue that needs to change, and if ever there was a time to figure it out I think it's right now the most immediate problem with that get more flies solution is that if someone on test positive for coronavirus, it isn't simply a matter of replacing that person one infected crew member could shut down an entire production. And the safety protocols that you need to prevent that that requires time and attention and money. So what we can't do a separate, the conversation of safety from the conversation of ours because the two are inextricably linked. If you're going to have a safer set, you need to have people that are healthy that have strong immune systems that are not sleep deprived. That are working regular hours. I don't know why it has gotten to a point where. We do work such long hours when honestly to have any sort of life, we shouldn't Laney trubisky is one of the many industry gig workers who read Zak's blog post she's a hairstylist and she's been in the business since nineteen ninety-three. But back in March when the pandemic hit her work stopped Gosh, it's just been ups and downs my feelings change every single day I'm not sure if I even willing to remain in the film business. Because the film business, we had before very stressful and was very hard on a lot of families and people and things have to change their for sure the hours for her makeup teams some of the longest onset they have to be there before the actors arrive and can't leave until the actors are done. Laney says the norm are fourteen or sixteen hour days, and she has worked for twenty four hour days in her career, but she's hopeful. Things will get better. There's so much time entailed in getting our disinfecting right before we even get to work and get to working on the actors that the film business is going to have to slow down I. Don't think it has a choice anymore, and I, think it will be beneficial for all of us. Laney's work requires her to be on set but people like Editors Zach? Arnold. Well, they can do a lot of their work from home. As long as their bosses sign off, just had the conversation this week with an assistant editor who was told that in order for them to be able to keep their job, they have to work in the office and they have to go into a screening room with ten or fifteen directors and producer. They can take notes because that's just the way that it is in its quote unquote impossible to. Work from home we've now learned that's not the case and people are just making these excuses number one because they don't want to put in the effort or number two because they don't Wanna spend the money but guess what disruption is uncomfortable, it is painful but this is the point where we're going to have to fix these issues because you can't just say to somebody sorry informed the standards or we're. Going to hire somebody else while it might have been possible in the past for the people doing the hiring to point to a pile of resumes and say, if you don't do this job, someone else will arnold says that's changing. Now there's nobody on that stack because nobody's willing to go in under these circumstances and that is why I think Cova such an inflection point for post for Hollywood generals that. Before whenever we've thought about what are the consequences? Well, it's going to be really long days and I'm going to be really sleep deprived and something might happen. But what are the chances now we're literally talking about losing our lives if we do this wrong and I think that is the big change that we're seeing just emotionally the groundswell is people saying your entertainment is not worth me giving my life.

Are Movie Theaters Screwed?

"I'm Sean. Fantasy and Amanda Events, and this is the big picture. A conversation show about movies. There is a lot of news about movies in the world right now, but not so many movies, it is officially August which means three things one, it is hot as hell outside. To its Amandus, birthday happy, birthday Amanda. Thank you shot three a very bad time for movies and this year. Of course, it's unusually bad. Thanks to covid nineteen. So man, we have a lot to talk about today's episode a lot about the state of the movie business and more specifically about where you didn't spend your birthday, which is in a movie theater. Because movie theaters are not open and it's sort of feels like movie theaters are screwed. We're going to talk a little bit about some of the decisions that Mc made last week and the ramifications of that, and maybe some of the financial decisions that AMC made earlier today, and what that means for the future of movies. It's a very complicated time. Can you help us understand just a little bit of what transpired last week between? AMC and Universal Studios. Yes. So we got the ultimate resolution of the great trolls world tour fight of twenty twenty, which is that after much public negotiating and wild statements made on both sides, AMC theaters and universal came to an agreement and universal movies. Now will be shown in AMC theaters with a new theatrical window of seventeen days, which is notably shorter than the previous window that most that all studios and movies operated under in the United States. That window used to be in the neighborhood of between two and three months, and that meant films has a plan theaters for nearly a quarter of the year and sometimes more than that before you could find them at home and that's changing I sort of I. You know it's clearly changing for the purposes of universal movies. No other studio has come to this agreement and universal. Universal has only come to this agreement with one theater chain. Am See. So this is not a cataclysmic event, but it certainly seems presidential. It certainly seems as if it's something that is going to send shockwaves throughout the industry for the future. You know. Obviously, we spent so much time on this show talking about the slow atrophying of the theatrical experience. This feels as significant. A story has happened in that respect I was just doing some doing some Napkin math last night about box office receipts, and so over the past ten years, the annual domestic box office has averaged about eleven eleven, billion dollars in the United, states, and right now, it sits at about one point, eight, billion dollars with just about two plus months of true box office. So. These are really desperate times for movie theaters and so am see I. I'm trying to understand what specifically is motivating AMC's whiplash decision making because as you said, Adam Erin who is the CEO of AMC had some very strong words for universal's decision about trolls world tour about four or five months ago, and now they've made nice and in fact it it sort of feels like AMC took a hit here in this negotiation, what do you think is animating their their decision making deep financial desperation just this absolute total. What else can we do to keep the lights on? which I am not a do not have an MBA. Okay, and I'm not an economist, but there has a lot has been written. You know in deadline and in the Wall Street, Journal and the trades about the extremely precarious financial situation of AMC in particular, and obviously all of this is heightened by the fact that movie theaters have not been open for months now and they don't have a business model because of covid nineteen but I think you know covid nineteen has really exacerbated. What was. A A tricky situation for all movie theaters. But especially, it seems AMC just because of how it's business it structured and you mentioned today there assume news about AMC's restructuring in order to. Reallocate some of its debt, but it just all seems under the guise of we have to keep the lights on because we do not have cash on hand and movie theaters aren't open and we don't know when they're going to be able to be open most places, and if we don't have cash coming in, then our business no longer exists. So AMC it even it seems within the realm of the theater chains who are all obviously impacted by covid nineteen seems to be really motivated to figure out any income stream that it can right
