"Welcome back, American, you had joined my former Missouri senator Jim talent now with that bipartisan policy center. And I normally talk defense with gen talent, but today I want to talk politics with them. Senator, how many different elections were you participant in? I ran 11 times. Okay, so I think what are you 9 for 11? 9, 11, you remembered, right? Very, very good record. So we've got a race across the river from the capitol in Virginia between glennon and Terry mcauliffe. I'm sure you know Terry. Right now they're talking about Glenn junkins agenda. Terry looks, you know, he's an empty rooms with little crowds. He's flailing and the president went over there and he got about 500 people to show up. What do you make of that race? As a former candidate who is both what a lot and lost a couple of times, what do you think is going on? Yeah, there's a couple of questions. You always want to ask at the end of the race. So what issues what messages are being talked about? It was who they used to call the scene red and heard. What are people talking about going in? Into the election. And I think that's very favorable for young pin. And then the second question is who has the momentum going in? Because if a race is close, the side with the momentum is usually the one that wins. So I think people are right. I mean, if I was a betting man and I put money on this, I'd bet on younger. But, you know, it's very close. And people need to turn out. I mean, obviously if they haven't voted already. You know, I remember when Matt Bevin won an unexpected victory in Kentucky in the right that polls had him 5 behind any one by 5. Something like a double digit swing between the pole. I think young sounded so optimistic yesterday when Glenn young could appear on this show and Terry mccaul just looks betwixt in between. Now, the key question to me is this cryptic message from Donald Trump last night that he'll be seeing voters in Virginia. Democrats seized on this. And my initial response to somebody told me about it was if Democrats are counting on a Donald Trump visit to Virginia to swing an election to them. They're in really bad shape. You share that sentiment? Yeah, I would tend to agree with that. I also think you mentioned my career. I had a little different view of voters and a lot of political professionals. So I think what the number one thing in their mind is, how is this going to affect me and my family and the things that I care about? And that's why I think this whole education issue is so radioactive for them because it reaches into people's families in ways that they can understand and including people who don't normally follow politics day to day, the way, you know, the way we do in our world, I just think that's very, very difficult for them. I tend to agree with what Rick Scott said. I think the cycle looks very good for Republicans for a lot of reasons. And he kicked them off. The border inflation. I mean, it's just one thing after another and it's traceable in most cases to the policy of the Biden administration. So yeah, I mean, I think I tend to keep my hopes down. You know what I mean? So I'm not disappointed, but I feel pretty good about it. So I want to go to something you won't feel good about, which is a missile gap. A real missile gap general Milly acknowledged it yesterday. Do you think the American people are internalizing what it means? No, not fully because it's not being explained at the highest strategic level to them. So what the Chinese want to do and we have a chapter on this and Chinese China commission report last year. So this is what they want. They want us to recognize that the south of these China seas are their territorial waters. They want us to abandon our treaty alliances. They want to control trade movement and travel in those waters and in East Asia and in general, they want to constrain us from any criticism of them and their developing the power very deliberately to punish the American homeland if we resist any of this. Now, not just military power, also economic diplomatically in another way. This is a very definite and rather open agenda that they have. And so you have to look at things like hypersonics and that context. We have to decide whether we're going to insist on our rights and our security as a nation and whether we're going to prepare to resist this and deter them. That's the contest. Now, senator last night, the fetching misses Hugh and I resumed watching the Americans. The story of Soviet sleeper agents in the United States in the 80s. I was part of that effort to find and monitor them at the Department of Justice for Bill Smith and Ed and I didn't like it. It was too much of a flashback. But last night I found myself thinking, the Soviets were that aggressive, and that good at it in the 80s. How good are the Chinese and the Iranians today? Does that bother you? Yeah, that's one of the tools they use. They're very aggressive. Now, people disagree about how good they are at it, but they're definitely penetrating really every level and aspect of American society with their message. And trying to control through different themes, different centers of influence and they have a lot of money to grow around to do it. And you can look at particular places and see what they're doing. So you have to have a whole united front work department. Hundreds of thousands of people, that's officially what they do. But it's yeah. What about espionage? Do you think they do the same things that the Russians used to do, the dead drops, that sort of stuff, turning people? Yes. They do. And that's one aspect of it. I mean, outright illegality, but there's a whole series of domains in which they are trying to control what we see and what we think about them. People should be aware of that. I'm going to talk with Jim talent about that in the weeks ahead. They should be aware that when you're watching the Americans, you're looking at like an ancient version of what the modern espionage games are like. Jim talent on Twitter by that name at Jim talent, I'll be back in the third hour America..

Trump's intelligence chief warns China is the greatest threat to US since WWII

"Outgoing us administration of president. Donald trump has thus far extended few of the traditional courtesies to the incoming administration of president elect joe biden. There has been no two of the white house no sporting photo op in the rose. Garden and little of the handover briefings from one group of officials to the next however director of national intelligence. John ratcliffe whether trying to help or hinder has passed along. His top worth to the next president in a wall street journal op-ed he has warned. President elect biden that china poses the greatest threat to america today and to worldwide democracy since world war two on joined with more on this point. Isabel hilton ceo at china dialogue. Isabel is the director of national intelligence entirely wrong here. We never entirely wrong but they do manage to you. Make a really terrible case turn radcliffe. I would remind you is director of national intelligence by skin of his teeth. When he was first nominated there was such a sort of howl of protest is lack of qualifications and the fact that he had falsified his own resume that that that trump at one point had to withdraw nomination before trying again. So you know as a kind of bond with the distinguished record nuanced analysis. I would you know maybe take it with a pinch of salt. That said clearly that the you know that china is a major challenge to democratic values of the united states. is meant to defend this. After a couple of problems with this framing one. It is clearly designed to To constrain at the incoming administration that is trying to take very different approach to foreign policy and the outgoing administration is trying to narrow the ground so saying that china is the greatest threat to freedom. Well you know okay It is true that china has indulged in ip theft. Absolutely true surprise just as the united states by the way did against the uk in the twentieth century. is it that may be ongoing espionage. Certainly and china certainly has nationalist ambitions. It certainly trying to bend the global rules to serve its own interest that is what big powers do including the united states. So the problem is is not the diagnosis. If you like. It's the reverend is that the trump administration has offered over the last four years which have simply made it easier for china to advance. Its case so the i think dangers here. One is the exaggeration of china's powers. And that's something we saw with the soviet union towards the end of the cold war. That if you have security agencies whose prosperity depends on building a threat they will big up a threat and so right to the moment when the soviet union collapsed we were hearing from. Us intelligence and security agencies that the world was about to be overwhelmed by soviet communism. And there's a bit of the same syndrome going on here but the second problem is the complete ineptitude of the trump administration encountering the chinese efforts to do that you have to build alliances not destroy them. And you have to make sure that your own offer has credibility. Most people prefer living a well-functioning democracy with personal freedoms trump has not been the best advert for that. At least for the trump's the united states is not the finest moment for democracy. And so you know yes. Of course there is a challenge here to challenge values challenge a political system but the way to country is with the integrity of our own political systems including that of the united states red cliff talks of china operating an influence campaign inside the united states. And on the one hand. That's a somewhat fatuous statement because everybody operates influence campaign inside the united states and indeed in pretty much every other country but is there anything especially sinister or dangerous about what china is doing. Ratcliffe also talks of them targeting members of congress. Well again no surprise. China has has done this an onion eternal lays it all out if you look at anything to do with the united front work department. Which is that bit of the party which has always existed which is intended to manage relations with non party elements. It used to be largely working within china building relationships or or not with religious authorities or with business. People are not in the communist party. Now that china's going global so has the united front work department and it has teamed up with a with the entity in the party that used to manage overseas chinese affairs so and it has put an enormous amount of money into this since the beijing olympics which was regarded as a pr disaster for china in so many ways Would've been the results. Well according to the pew survey in the last month china's reputation has never been lower so yes. China is putting great efforts into influence building and so far. They've been a terrible flop now. There is an element of this which is elite capture. Which again was going pretty. Well i think certainly in the uk for example in an example of elite capture would be the approach of the cameron government to china which you know proclamations of the golden decade. And so on. That's her you know very much again. If you look at elite attitude to china largely because of china's overreach there has been a big backlash everywhere from australia to the united states to europe. You hear the same message. so yes. they're making an effort but is it working. No it's not just one final thought and it's it's a concern that ratcliff doesn't raise for obvious reasons but is there any kind of danger of between now and january twentieth china just thinking there's nobody watching the shop if we're ever going to try and pull something big when never gonna get another chance like this. Well of course the big worry. I mean you might say. Hong kong was that the big warriors taiwan. And there's been a lot of jostling as you know in taiwan. I guess another option is the is the india china border again. We've seen quite a lot of live action there this year. My personal views. That taiwan is a step too far think china has a really a realistic understanding of what it would take not only to take taiwan but then to make that occupation work. And this you know. There are plenty of warnings about how difficult that is. And is this the moment to risk so much in pursuit of that. Of course the regime wants to recapture taiwa are how reunite or however they care to phrase it. But i think we've pretty much got twenty forty nine before that becomes acute in their many other Things that many other things that can be done to make taiwan life difficult short of a military assault isabel hilton front. "Now. You've probably heard a little bit. At least about the mar-a-lago the incident where the Chinese woman was arrested on Saturday. Let me tell you what I know about it. And I'm getting this information largely from the Washington Post. Her name is Eugene Chen Zhang she's a Chinese. She arrived at the first security checkpoint at mar-a-lago, she was in the parking lot across the street from the resort. She said she was headed to the clubs pool. She was not on the list. I guess it's a guest guest list, according to charging documents a mar-a-lago staffer still allowed her in. Because the club believed that she was the relative of a club member whose name was also Zhang. She was picked up by club employees, then and driven in a golf cart to the main building there. A club receptionist stopped her and asked her why she had come to the club. She said she'd come from Shanghai to attend a United Nations friendship event at the club at the invitation of a friend named Charles. But there was no such events scheduled. According to the charging documents the receptionist then called over a secret service agent and Zhang became verbally aggressive. She was then arrested when she was arrested. I mean this. This is one of the interesting things when she was arrested. She had some interesting things on her including a thumb drive. That contained Mauer. She also had a computer. She had a hard drive. Let's say she had four cell phones. She had a hard drive, a laptop and a mouse Melwert infected thumb drive. This is this is a serious issue. And what has happened with this being made public is it's really exposed this porous security at mar-a-lago. And apparently there are escalating tensions between the secret service and the resort staff members, the staff members are the ones who that guests and allow people onto the grounds at times neither side, not the employees. Not the secret service has had full clarity on who is entering mar-a-lago. That is unacceptable. Secret service agents have to rely on club, receptionists and other employees to cross check visitors. I wanna tell you something else here in that. Is that a story? That's just coming out in. Politico says the China right now is providing services to this woman who was arrested at mar-a-lago some of their there are people who are promoting mar-a-lago. We've heard a previously about the woman who. Who was one of the owners of the massage parlors that were busted the ones that were actually providing services it was it was human trafficking sexual trafficking was going on. And that was a big big big story will that woman who owned us? Some of those massage parlors are owned the massage parlours, Cindy Yang. A string of the Sasha parlors. She somebody who not only has been a guest at mar a Lago. She's appeared with Donald Trump at mar-a-lago. She also has promoted mar-a-lago that she can get people into mar-a-lago. So when this Jiang lady was stopped. She produced a copy of Chinese language invitation for the friendship event that didn't exist. That was promoted by this same Cindy Yang. Yang is active in groups that are backed by the Chinese government communist party. She is there that is what that is what she does. But she has promoted. She's promoted herself as somebody who can give you access to a Donald Trump, some of the people who can give you access to mar-a-lago and therefore Donald Trump. There are a number of events that are held on Trump property some of the Chinese promoters of these events they like to flaunt their connections to Chinese ruling communist party and the department that promotes is foreign policy abroad that's called a United front work department. Here's the thing security worked. Okay. All right security got her. They have these concentric circles where they have a protect protectee that work to protect Donald Trump. But this is an incredibly serious issue. The secret service is talking about this. They're pointing fingers at the resort staff. The resorts half estate is saying that it's the secret services responsibility. It's tough is really tough to take a public facility and to provide sufficient protection to the president of the United States at a facility like that. If it was Camp, David there'd be no question because Camp David is made for presidents. It's where president go it has amazing security, but Donald Trump likes to go down to his property at mar-a-lago any goes there with some frequency, by the way every time he makes this trip. It costs over four million dollars tax payers pay some of that goes into Donald Trump's pocket because the details and the people who go with him have to live there. They have to stay at the resort. So they pay for. That and that, of course goes to the Donald so did secret service. Do the right thing in this. Yeah. The protocols worked it says not Camp David is not the White House. It's not a government facility. It is a private commercial entity. But it is disturbing that she was able to get as far as she was able to get she had malware on her. Thumb drive now for Rennes IX is going to tell us. What was on the fem drive? If we're ever going to know a determination is going to be made. Hopefully as to what she intended to do with it. And perhaps who she was connected to was she aerob- person. I mean, the, malware that's something that we should be wondering who the legitimate purpose would have malware on a fund drive and walk into a place where Donald Trump is. And he was there at the time, by the way. There's you can say that this highlights and issue with having the president spent so much time there, and it does it has to present security nightmares for the secret service. Remember, the when Donald Trump was sitting in the restaurant, and he was with the president of China, and there were people around him and they're talking about nuclear capabilities in North Korea. And there are all kinds of people who are taking pictures of them. Or who knows whatever the what else they're doing? They could potentially with sensitive microphones, they could be recording their conversations with the proper cameras. They could see the documents that the president was sharing with the president of China. I mean, it's just so bizarre that things go on things that should be sensitive. Things are going on in the public. It's not good security practice. But again the protocols worked in this case. But here's the thing. What occurred to me? And I think what likely occurred to the security detail to other people who are in law enforcement, definitely to the higher ups at the secret service. Is that there are people who do dry runs? Where you try to see just how far you can go where you go into a place. That's protected a play could be the White House. It could be a nuclear facility. It could be a lot of places. It could be the World Trade Center, you go into these places and you scope out the weaknesses of security. You do a firsthand assessment of the of the venue you walk around. You might take pictures surreptitiously or overtly you check it out. So that you can see how far you can go where the lapses may exist. And then you use that to carry out a serious attack. Or you could do another drive run. Another dry run all the time going through different security checkpoints trying to do different things in order to evade security. See what works what doesn't work each one would reveal more information and greater weaknesses. Now. We don't know if there were successful penetrations at already had been completed and this was a subsequent dry run. We don't know we don't know. We don't know if this was the final attack because we don't know what was on that drive. But if I were working in Trump's detailed today, those are some of the conversations I would be having with him and with the entire detail. I would tighten the security immediately. I'd prevent Trump for returning tomorrow Lago for a period of time until there is further investigation and security protocols are established the receptionist cannot be the person test with determining who gets in secret service. Has to be there. They have to have the front roll the primary role, then they can go through the, you know, the process of going through the reception desk, but the secret service has to make the determination. I now that said this could have been completely innocuous it innocuous. This could have been a fairly innocent penetration of our Lago by someone deceitful but harmless, but there is that issue of the thumb drive. Eight ten is the telephone number. I'm thinking. I don't wanna see the president attacked. I don't want to succeed. I don't want to see a successful attack. Whether it's an attack of the facility or whether it's attack of the president. I don't want to see the thumb drive. Suddenly be some sort of small container of an a deadly agent. I don't wanna see an assassination attempt. I don't want to see a terrorist attack. I don't wanna see a lone wolf. I'd want to see any of those things going on where the president is. And the secret service has that responsibility. And if they can't secure this place and the president spends as much time as he spends there it could be a ticking time bomb he shouldn't be allowed to go back. Not until they have changed the security protocols in existence not until they can ensure and Veith feel confident because they obviously don't. They need to feel confident that they can provide the security to the president that is necessary. Eighty eight ten is the telephone number your thoughts on this woman going into mar-a-lago and all the weird circumstances surrounding her. And now the report that we get that China that China is providing services to this woman who was arrested eight ten is the telephone number. You know, it could be the same kind of services any embassy provides. I'm not sure I'll have to find out more about this. But I'm not happy that this happened. I am extremely concerned. Are you eight hundred eight oh, eight ten eighty eighty eight ten let's say, let's go to Jim. Jim's calling from Santa Rosa H M. Welcome to K G O. Our you. I'm well. Thank you. It just dawned on me. So if if I if I were an adversary of the United States would have had someone join mar-a-lago when Trump was elected when it went to two hundred thousand dollars because that seems like a very nominal fee to insert someone into access to that twenty four seven. I know I know I mean, I don't know. And I'm pretty sure that they haven't done background investigations on every person. Who is a? Yeah. Who right now, they believe has a right to be there. Yeah. So look more than anything else. Yes. Somebody phrased what you just said as you pay and you get in. Well, it has to be better. But the two hundred thousand green became the factor. Right. So I'm going to be president. Now, the membership is two hundred grand not one hundred grand, right? And now now if you want to join no problem how would out of bed with his green factor. Yeah. No. I think you're absolutely right. So I wonder if they even pursued the people who were the new buyers once he was elected that the secret service had the opportunity to run background investigations on these people. I mean, a really serious security investigation to determine if these people might post some sort of potential threat to the president it it just seems like porous doesn't begin to describe the security problems there. Eighty eight ten is the telephone number. Steve is calling from Selena Steve. Hi, welcome to K, G O. Hey, great conversation. Everything you say is true. But I'd like to take the camera up to higher altitude..

"The whole interview is I'm gonna play the entire interview for you right now. I'm joined by former Missouri. Senator Jim talent Senator good morning. Great to talk to you as always. Always good. You got two big questions. I just I just fell through a memory hall and talk to a Kennedy scoop Jackson democrat, Tim Ryan from Ohio. He's a friend of mine, and and ten stunned my audience because he's talking about we gotta be worried about China their belt road initiative. They're making a run at our international superpower status with no near peer he sounded like Jack Kennedy. I mean, it's it's refreshing. Isn't it? Yeah. And I think Tim represents a real bipartisan consensus on the hill that China is the pacing threat and that both from an economic, but also from a military standpoint, we need to prepare and and have the tools to conduct this national competition against them. I know this is an area that I don't think Trump gets enough credit because he's crystallized a cinema in Washington that was there already I think, but I wrote a column about this couple of weeks ago, but a sentiment that it's it's time to really begin to compete effectively with China across a broad range of tracks. And I think the president has support on both sides of the hill and doing that. Yeah. I in fact, had a a fascinating conversation over the week with Victor Davis Hanson about what Donald Trump was elected to do. And one of the things he was elected to do was to confront the China challenge and Nixon guy, right? I work for. Our end back in seventy eight nine hundred seventy nine and eighty and again, again, eighty nine ninety ninety one and he had great hopes for China. But they have they have not. That's not the China. Nixon opened it's a different China now. That's right. See we thought leading an and I understand this point of view. In fact, I would have supported it at the time that letting China into the world trading system would cause China to change. And what's happened is China's changing the world trading system. Yeah. As a threat to the broader international order, and I don't mean, you know, the new world order or anything. I just mean an order where nations relate to each other. According to rules and resolve disputes peacefully. And so we got to decide what you know. Whether we're willing to stand up for our interests in in East Asia and the western Pacific and the president's now, I also have to say China, if you are a genuine climate concern person. I mean, there's a spectrum of hysteria to genuine concern that runs pretty far. And, but let's just say you understand climate change is an issue, and you wanna take steps China's also threat, they're they're the biggest Amidror, and they ain't gonna stop because they got a billion three people to feed, right? Yeah. I spoke to when Romney was run in seven years ago. I spoke to the screen group on his behalf beyond told them that if they expected that that economic growth for China's a regime stability. Issue. In other words, if they don't get the growth, they think they need they're afraid the regime could could fall. Okay. And I said they are not going to compromise their own position in order to cooperate with any kind of international climate change initiative, and I was kind of mood for saying that. But of course, it's true there. Yeah. There are huge and they're going to continue on and they're gonna pretend to comply, but they're not going to comply. Or or the or they'll adopt targets where they say, you know, we'll have our carbon emissions down to where they would have been anyway by two thousand thirty five or two thousand four years. Now that brings me to an announcement yesterday. The White House is going to put together a twelve member federal advisory committee on climate change as a national security threat. It's not a climate denial steel. It's none of that. It's what does climate change actually mean from the perspective of national security, and it would it would Bank shot in China problem. And the problem, I think it's actually a very good move. But already there's pushback in the media that they don't think Trump is serious about this. I bet you serious death about this. Yeah. It's a it's a it's a leverage points against the Chinese and one of the things that we're starting to do now, which is important is exposed their narrative because they want us, and you know, how much money and effort they Spencer the United front work department to project the Chinese narrative around the world, and we're going to start contesting. Now, that's one of the things I think this group is going to do it gets very smart, again, the president is is has defined the national security policy there. They have developed tools. And they're and each of the agencies is now moving to execute that policy. It's the way the government should work contesting, the China narrative is sort of a never actually I was thinking about this early this morning Senator, and I want to give you the last minute. I hope we have not missed the opportunity to rebalance this relationship. In other words, I hope it isn't China's century, and we don't know it. What do you think? Oh, I have great confidence in the reservoirs strengthen our country. Once they're mobilized into being mobilized now. And I think once we and we are effectively competing. We have to continue this and disciplined way. I've I've admonished and said and encourage people. Okay, you, you know, you you deter the Chinese, but you try and do it without provoking, a proud people. Right. If we do that consistently for a few years, I think it's possible that we'll be able to come to some kind of ongoing arrange with them, that's acceptable. But we have to show them. I that there are real costs and consequences to what they've been doing. That's wise. Jim talent wise, you ought to follow him on Twitter at Jim talent that way you won't miss anything that he does.
