I'm I'm sorry Any of that stuff was made your ears bleed that we discussed there but we really know how to run away new listener. GonNa say if anybody tunes in like fresh on this episode. They're not they have no idea. What the fuck where. They're not coming back. But I mean that's sort of every episode. Why this is why I was GonNa say this is why we're not growing but we're actually growing really say we're doing all right This episode like I said Bhopal which I actually looked up how to pronounce this correctly because I was tired of not being able to pronounce the names of things. And it's so big trouble in Little Paul now so Papa Bhopal is this have to do with the clergy. What clergy the Papa Papa you know the VATICAN WITH APOLLO? Nothing does not not not going along those lines. We're talking about Paul India baby now before I get started once again. Which is usually my go-to there are two things that I'm going to start with my intro to chemicals that you should know about now the first one is methyl isocyanate which methylisocyanate is five hundred times worse than hydrogen cyanide if it's not kept in spotless refrigerated conditions it can react explosively with itself Which is why a lot of chemical engineers recommend you store it in Brealey tiny quantities or just not at all it's corrosive to the is respiratory tract and skin so it's like a chemical corona virus and it causes. Pulmonary Dima which is oh that's just liquid in the lungs so no big number two. I'm referred to this. One is phase two as Carbon Tetra Chloride Carbon Tetra quote chloride. Jesus Christ Tetra. I fucked it up you guys I could. I could pronounce Papa but I can't pronounce this one. I just fell Paul B. H pal. Google them. I was like be. Ap L. Battle so carbon tetra chloride causes fatty livers and liver cell destruction And this is if it's consumed so it's booze but on like a cellular level like it. It's way worse than just drinking. Alcohol also causes kidney failure solid. And if you're consuming it frequently enough. You get vomiting headaches and dizziness. Yeah nothing wrong with any of those but there are other symptoms that get into when I talk about base too. So referring to phase one phase one starts now Her awful looking hate myself. That's one of the t shirts. GonNa say it's GonNa say D- is awful. That's or I fucking hate myself. D So in Bhopal India nineteen eighty-four. Union Carbide factory was working with missile. Methyl Ice Oh my fucking God. I shouldn't have done this session down at and you do this. They were working with my God Menlo Isocyanate which if you remember what I was talking about. They kept it in a huge tank in Bhopal Bhopal God damn it the size of a steam locomotive. Now that's fine. This is fine no big deal. Nobody cares as you have a slightly larger than steam locomotive refrigerator. Right so they so you see. That's Union Carbide factory. I'm just GONNA call him. Uc throughout this. They had been wanting to sell their company to Brazil or Indonesia because but in Indonesia whatever it in Asia. I'm on fucked up on all this coffee. I'm now going crazy. So they wanted to sell because they couldn't really afford it so they started to cut costs now over four years so from nineteen. Eighty to like nineteen eighty-four They cut the MAC unit in half. Which is the methyl isocyanate? They cut that in half from twelve people handling it to six. They cut maintenance for that same area from six people to to. Oh that's fine. And then the Control Room. One operator over seventy panels and indicators and controls which were mostly faulty throughout the entire for years Their safety training was reduced from six months. How how much she thinks either do such safety training a half in half so they reduce it from six months three months three months. Yeah so their safety. Training was reduced from six months to two weeks. Oh God and they changed their like the little. Oh Hey these are safety things that we go by. They changed those from Indian to English and most of the people they hired didn't speak English so they're like Oh these are safety sayings and they can't even they don't even know what the Hell it means. And then you see started boasting. Oh we've saved one point two five million dollars but I mean we don't really have anything left to cut. So they hit their one point two five million dollars in savings prop Saddam in literally just tanking employees and safety and they said the only thing that we can really save on is if we cut back on our refrigeration for the MDC tank. And there's nothing..

"And we're back when we last left off a bunch of parched workers in india were quenching their thirst and he was being all judgy about it so what it happens after the break okay so i am being very judgy about it. I judge you. Everybody involved in this so the tea break ends at twelve forty a._m. Him and the crew haram fully gets back to figuring out how to meal forty two tons of highly pressurized overheated uh-huh stupid job. Leave the tea break one hundred percent real. I can't believe take the full twenty five minutes. They're like twelve twelve thirty nine. No no i'm still on my boss. I'm still on my twenty-five. Thank you and you thought there are union had no power collect twelve forty. Okay okay so it's twelve forty. They finished their not break and over the next five minutes. The temperature readings for the tank go literally off the scale of the temperature gauge that they have for the tank tank. Apparently that thing maxed out at seventy seven degrees fahrenheit was terrified. Yes so the temperature sure was one of the numbers above seventy seven at the top of my head every name and there's a lot there's so many numbers could be. I could name a a lot of numbers over seventy one point eight two cillian numbers contrast contest. Yes there's a lot of numbers above seventy seven and <hes> <hes> the pressure was up to forty pounds per square inch at that point or twenty times too high and that's when a concrete great slab above the tank cracked in half. There was an earthquake feel that everybody noticed and the emergency relief valve burst. I open now despite this safety feature that opened up a large outflow of poison and your radically would reduce the pressure inside the tank that didn't happen the pressure kept building and got up to at least fifty five psi or as indicated on that pressure gauge fuck eh hang on them at the emergency relief valve when opened releases emergency levels of poison like this is like playing with a vat of pressurized exactly what it is the same game one poisons your life the poisons but they showed cartoon steam whistles on the top of the thing i feel it in one of those just installed itself but then they would have been able to warn people. That's important too there. There was definitely a lack of funny cartoon noises at the musical on stage play. We'll put in some slide whistles s i love it it and just to review in addition to the emergency relief valve which was intended to open at this point but probably never intended to explode explode over on top of that there were three other safety devices that should have prevented any of this stuff from happening but all three three of them were either broken the wrong size by a lot judging not being used because the factory again just didn't feel like it. What are they like it so this is like the samsung galaxy note of pesticides at any moment yeah well. Well shouldn't go on an airplane with any of this stuff so on the first of those three safety devices was the refrigeration system it was supposed to you cool the tank obviously and keep it nowhere near the max temperature on the gauge of seventy seven degrees fahrenheit. This cooling system was shut shutdown. Though about three years earlier and all its freon had been removed like six months ago what what and i have no idea and considering they had no more cooling. They also disconnected the overheating alarm. I mean it would have sounded at fifty two degrees fahrenheit but they they disconnected it because i'm assuming that would have just been like blaring for three straight years and that's annoying and just for the record during those three ears the tanks ranged in temperature from fifty nine degrees up to one zero four because again there in central india okay so the first system is a shared memory among some of the workers that have been there for a while. He told me to turn that the refrigerated there would be nothing to turn left at yup. Okay all right. This is like putting electrical tape over your check engine light and then filling the car with t._n._t. While juggling ruling lit road torture that's approximate what's going on on a huge huge huge scale scale time sixty eight thousand that would only dangerous for you and your car yeah right now and it up. Let's see what else we had a couple of other safety devices. There's another one was the flare tower which didn't matter either <hes> normally that would be a very large pipe that would collect any poison gas that might escape and it would heat it up and that would burn up the gas before it reached the open air but at the union carbide factory in bhopal instead of that pipe being very very large to go along with you know a sixty eight thousand liter tank of deadly poison. It was very small. It was a very small pipe. The flare tower had a connecting pipe that was recently removed for maintenance so tiny little flare tower pipe. That wouldn't have helped anyway. Anyway was connected to nothing instead of connected to the tanks so didn't matter either seat now. This is why you have to play through your mario maker levels people talk shit connects to something seriously like all these guys remind me of my dad doing woodworking in the garage and telling me like all those safety fences keep view from work going up like fingertips everywhere. He looked like declawed. We're missing safety device. The third one was something called a vent gas scrubber which would normally do approximately what it sounds like it would do any poison poison gas going through the device would be absorbed and neutralized by large amount of caustic soda which doesn't sound great the safety safety material has the word caustic at the beginning encouraging but none of this matters because the vent gas scrubber was deactivated. He activated that day and in still buy mode oh and well apparently you can't just change the mode whenever you feel like it. It's in standby mode for <music> set amount of time. It's a long two and then three workers hung dartboard on the side of the tank and instead of using darts surface to air missile yeah that might have made things safer to explode the gas and burns up actually right actually would have been better it would probably they just killed everybody there civility so after the emergency release valve exploded open about forty tons of 'em m._c._i. Gas got released into the air over the next two hours and the giant cloud of poison was blown southeast by the wind right over the city of bhopal and that brings us to the next safety device that didn't work. I said there were three earlier. I actually meant all of them which was more than three all anything anything with the word safety that might apply didn't work after the valve exploded around twelve fifty a._m. One of the workers pulled the plants alarm and that triggered to different sirens one inside the plant and another that was directed outward to warn anyone nearby like for example the eight hundred fifty fifty thousand people in the city of bhopal at the time but as you might have already guessed the plant decided to decouple these sirens back in one thousand nine hundred eighty two so they they could keep the factory alarm going but shut off the public alarm because they didn't want to create public alarm. Yes they did ah. They really really did but that's exactly what happened. On the morning of december third. Both sirens got activated and immediately shut off the public siren in well. All the workers evacuated the factory. Hopefully heading upwind actually replaced the public alarm of the music box played go to sleep the one last time after starts playing an episode of citation needed yep it'll be it'll be a fun number in the musical so the public siren didn't help and the news leak didn't travel very fast. The cloud of poison itself actually traveled a lot faster than the news of the league which could have been phone call right away but wasn't bhopals chief of police did get a phone call but not until around one a._m. And it wasn't from the factory. It was from a town inspector telling him that the people in the neighborhood of ciola were behaving saving in a manner that could really only be explained if they were fleeing a cloud of poison okay. We've got a three twenty five in progress yeah. I'm sure yeah they are fleeing from a cloud of poison. What do you think i am some kind of rookie twenty five right dominant team that was at one a._m. Now let's fast forward to one twenty five a._m. Does that sound familiar yeah yeah. I'm i'm assuming another very strongly enforced twenty five minute t break and that's when the police called the poison factory to tasca any chance you guys had anything to do with the cloud of poison that i'm hearing about it. I heard about twenty five minutes ago and then i had to break <hes> during multiple phone calls between one twenty five and to ten a._m. To police were told by the factory that quote everything is okay but the cloud of poisons wait a fuck. You guys good. Everything's good guys good. Call him back again. You know everything's okay that happened several times but then the police called back one more time to be like. Are you sure everything's is okay seriously clean slate. If you were fibbing guys cleaners at which point the factory guys like us is us in the bow. Police department goes into crisis mode but they don't have any useful information because the factory is run by cartoon rhinoceros so the city's main hospital about leak but just kind of guests about what poison it might be which was a total shot in the dark considering factories just giant collection of different poisons. The hospital finally got a real answer about two hours into the disaster really more like fifteen years in two hours but you know what i mean to make it even worse. The real answer was actually even more confusing. The hospital was told that the leak was mike rather than methyl isocyanate and they've never heard of that nor did they have an antidote note to that because again they'd never heard of that have any information about it so they were just like okay. The fucking factory guy said it was mike like the person or maybe an iron mike no idea so they're just making shit up trying to help sick people this christ so the factory artery finally got the gas leak under control sometime after two a._m. And bhai under control i mean the tank ran out of poison. They did the tomato tomato moment good news and bad news boss still leak no he did poison isn't cool outta poison and the tigers got out but other than that we're tigers not last long in this in our they stole a bunch of our poise and we're going to need to bill him for that. Suck but then and <hes> about fifteen minutes later probably after a quick little espresso break. It's the plan turned the public siren back on seriously fifteen minutes after league stopped because the boys all fifteen minutes later there were like we'll turn public sorry this feels like public alarm time yup and really all that meant was that everyone was.

"Are not going great the alarm not the alarms have been sounded after four thousand people have died yeah. Just you know four thousand people are so yeah so in order to kind of put together or provide a picture of exactly what was going on on and what it was like to be at Ground Zero for this. I'm going to quote from an India Today. report quote the Siren was heard by side con as he ran away leaving his family early coughing and sputtering by the time he returned in the morning his father mother and two brothers were dead. Only a sister survived Shehzad Khan of Jayaprakash Nagar who had fled in blind panic. I leaving his wife and four daughters to the vapors returned to find all but two girls dead Shivnarine a machine operator at the straw products factory lost a three month old boy but seven of his twelve twelve neighbors all of whom shared a four room l shaped hut died among the dead were not through Rome coup Soi the owner of the hut his wife and two children cousteau died because he couldn't leave his wife's side. She had just delivered their second child. A few hours earlier stories like that are repeated across the city of Bhopal thousands upon thousands of the people and families now. The Bhopal accident was the first time the doctor saw the effective gas on human beings on at any kind of scale. Those who died the first day had lungs that were as much as three times their normal weight the autopsy team suffered gas poisonings they cut open bodies that were essentially filled with chemical weaponry an exact the death toll for the immediate wake of the Bhopal disaster will never be known estimates range as high as ten to fifteen thousand in the first few days with another fifteen to twenty thousand thousand premature deaths over the next twenty years so at this point we're looking at thirty to forty thousand dead conservatively. That's right now. Again isn't times the death toll of channel and <hes> just I mean <hes> Morbid question from me. <hes> the four thousand people who die immediately does that have to do with like range with the closeness to the or or is there any like indication of why certain people survived another understood and are these are the people who you know mostly they're asleep. They live very close to where the leak happened so the gas hits them first and they just choked to death on their lungs. Just a lot of people will yeah got hit and got hurt but like got away many of whom were still heard enough that they died within a few days. <hes> others just suffered injuries that would kill them. Five Live ten fifteen years later <hes> yeah in the immediate wake of the Disaster Union Carbide set to work trying to avoid any Length less than a week after the disaster. It was filed by an American attorney in a U._S.. Court the first great piece of journalism on the disaster was published in January by The New York Times based on dozens live interviews with Plant Workers Union Carbide representatives and members of the Indian government. They were the first paper to report on much of what I talked about today. The cost cutting elimination of trained personnel now shutdown of basic safety equipment and failure to warn the community quote when question in recent days about the shortcomings disclosed in the inquiry by The Times a spokesman at the Union Carbide abide corporate headquarters in Danbury characterized any suggestion of the accident's causes a speculation in emphasized that Union Carbide would not contribute to that speculation cool cool the spokesman went on to state responsibility for plant maintenance hiring and training of employees establishing levels of training and determining proper staffing effing labels rest with the plant management <hes> <hes> Oh it's out. It's actually India's fault. It's actually India's India spot. Let's let's kind yeah now. The time spoke with V._p.. Gokhale the C. E. R. C. O. of the Union Carbide India to try parse out just how independent the so called subsidiary really was during his interview they noted quote at perhaps a dozen points during a two hour interview he read his answers into a tape recorder saying he would inform the parent corporation's Danbury headquarters of what he had said he also made notes of some of his comments and said he would send them the Danbury for approval by Union Carbide Lawyers Okay so that doesn't sound totally independent investing. I know sounds totally above board. It sounds like standard practice and yeah seems seems Oh God I get in cool cannot combat it. No it's just so fucked up. The Nasi are are dark. Yeah rip roaring funnest episode the things that you you tell us Robert it's upset yeah. It's not great and then we're just supposed to go home after that back. You know go home. Maybe get some bolt cutters and then the only advice you have for coping is to buy I both cutters so everybody could use a pair of bolt cutters. That's all I'm saying that's all I am Verner hers August Now <hes> The New York Times further notes that Union Carbide had several direct representatives on the Board of Union Carbide India including an E.. V. P. of the American company Mr Gokhale call confirmed that the Union Carbide Board of directors reviewed reports regularly from operations in their Indian subsidiary and made numerous safety decisions such as the decision to shut down the refrigerator to save power and free on yeah in March of Nineteen eighty-five the Indian government passed the gas leak disaster act making the Indian government the only representative victims in and outside side of India eventually the government reached a settlement with Union Carbide. The company took moral responsibility and paid four hundred seventy million dollars to the Indian government now. This was instantly controversial for one thing it was based on the idea that only three thousand people had died in one hundred and two thousand people had been permanently disabled. The real figure in both cases was of course several times that high the N._I._H.. Notes quote upon announcing the settlement shares of U._C._S._e.. Rose two dollars per share seven percent in value had compensation Bhopal been paid at the same rate that the asbestos victims were being awarded in U._S. courts by defendants including U._C._S._e.. which mind does from nineteen sixty sixty three to nineteen eighty-five the liability would have been greater than the ten billion the company was worth and ensured for nineteen eighty-four by the end of October two thousand three according to the Bhopal gas tragedy relief and Rehabilitation Department compensation had been awarded to five hundred fifty four thousand eight hundred ninety five people for injuries received in fifteen thousand three hundred ten survivors of of those killed? The average amount to families of the debt was twenty two hundred dollars that doesn't even cover like funeral costs but sure at and things like that happened especially. You're just like this is just like P._R.. For them it's not you know P._R.. Yeah it's just it's just too expensive like no. I think it's taken care of yeah. The fact that Union Carbide did not care about what had happened became even clear <hes> in the immediate wake or in the weeks following the disaster see when you kill ten thousand or so people in the space of a handful of days that tends to be bad for Business Dennis the Bhopal plant had already been slated for decommissioning they were slowly winding down production removing equipment but there were still thousands upon thousands of tons of toxic waste and equally toxic pesticide ingredients to be dealt with prior to this Disaster Union Carbide had dumped its waste into twenty-one unlined pits on the site. Now this is fucked up by modern standards but it should be said had this was the standard practice in the U._S.. Back then too so unlike with their failure to install a computer monitoring system. We can't put that one down to Union Carbide valuing Indian lives is less than American wants however industry-wide Stupidity Industry-wide Stupidity <hes> in nineteen seventy seven though the company built three proper solar evaporation evaporation ponds and started to piping waste directly in these ponds had a liner but it was thin and it broke immediately which allowed the waste to seep into the ground and eventually into the groundwater farmers numbers complained that the runoff was killing their cows and their crops and then when the disaster hit Union Carbide abandoned the factory and all of the poison inside it they're literally pictures of giant sacks acts of toxic chemicals that they left lying out unguarded and exposed to the elements. Many of those sacks are still lying around the factory to this day takes vets filled filled with deadly poison weren't emptied until nineteen eighty nine three hundred and sixty tons of the worst waste was finally locked up in two thousand five and the vast majority so my heart okay so after this happens is the area evac evac people aren't allowed to live there or people of course not no no. Nothing's changed everything just as bad in that people were moving in yeah so where did that these huge bags of toxic waste almost nothing was cleaned up the factory remained the poison seeped into the groundwater and as you might expect leaving all this poison around in the middle of a densely populated city has had some long term negative consequences yeah shockingly. I know that's that one really threw me for a loop to in two thousand Eighteen Atlantic writer poor of Mandeville wrote a great article about this called the world's worst industrial disaster is still unfolding. She traveled to a Gar- Dr a neighborhood directly across from the chemical plant. I'd like to read you the introduction from her article as it does a superb job of humanizing the long term impact of all this poison please do from the wooden bed outside or two room house money be the Grande Dame of unindo. Gar has a wide lens on the devastation Mooney. B.'s bed is less than two hundred feet from a massive pit that U._C.. See filled with toxic sludge close enough to witness the damage. The GONDA punny dirty water has wrought <hes> right next door is fifteen year old Faiza who didn't speak for the first five years of her life. Life still has heart palpitations dizzy spells and headaches. The young woman who grew up Tudor's down top assume now has a toddler who doesn't eat much or speak or cry and has seizures down the street street is obese a spindly legged thirteen-year-old with black pustules all over his body so painful and grotesques that he rarely leaves the house across the street from him his twelve year old Seib who who is intellectually disabled and then there's Nationa the street sweet young woman who lost her mother to tongue cancer and now sits in front of her house all day smiling occasionally shouting out guttural Gibberish to passer-by and then there is the house where one daughter has fused bones in her legs and another has a hole in her heart heart and are they are they still there living there still living in the area area yup yup slump in its slums that are around there. This is not where it's a big city. There's a lot of Nice parts of Bhopal. The slums were poor. People can afford to live many of them are directly directly around and surrounding the plant right and the plant is still operational or is it. Just it's just there. It's just cleaned up their walks away as like a Yup fucking like em like an abandoned amusement park. That's killing people yup. That sounds like a horror movie. Oh I would an abandoned amusement isn't park. That's killing people. It is see that movie. It's like a Stephen King Book Yeah absolutely okay. This is the data suggests that forty forty four communities in India at least had their ground water corrupted by toxic levels of solvents from the Old Union Carbide factory or plant Canadian researchers are in the process of conducting a long-term. I'm studying mortality. Birth defects fertility cancer and other ailments caused by the old plant the study which has evolved upwards of one hundred thousand people today suggest that folks who were exposed to the gas or to the water near the plant have ten times the rate of cancer compared to other groups so on a long-term basis the kids who grow up in the slums around the plant and drink the water have the same cancer risk is people who are actually actually guest on the night of the Disaster Dow Chemical Company but Union Carbide in two thousand one. They merged with dupont in two thousand seventeen today Dow Alan that does sound safe sounds like everything's GonNa be fine today. Dow claims that the responsibility for cleaning up the Mess Union Carbide left behind lies with Union Carbide India which is now called ever ready industries India ever ready for their part blames Union Carbide and their owner Dow Chemical Dow also regularly suggests that the state of Madhya Pradesh should be responsible for cleaning up the site. The state claims they can't afford to do that and has convinced the federal government to name Dow a curative petition demanding one point two billion as restitution for the original inadequate settlement on their website. Dow Still Tout's the old union carbide line. The disgruntled employee caused the accident. They steadfastly refused to admit any responsibility. Quote Dowa acquired shares of Union Carbide in two thousand one seven years after U._C._i.. became ever ready. Industries India Ltd Union Carbide had no assets in India at the time of the transaction with Dow. Don't I've never owned or operated the U._C._l._A.. L. Plant site activists on the other hand argue that when Dow Bought Union Carbide they assumed all of the company's liabilities as well as its assets. It's unlikely that any satisfactory resolution to the case will be reached as long as Dow Slash Dupont continues to have enough money for all of the lawyers a recent Greenpeace report estimated it would would cost thirty million dollars to clean up remaining waste at the old Union Carbide plant over a period of four years last year. Dow Dupont made eighty five billion dollars in profits cool well. I mean if Dow's involved. It seems to be like enough standing thing. I'm wanting to watch a NASCAR race all of a sudden. I'm like really dupont a pond. Oh my God yeah big names big names yeah good good Nascar seat that Dupont company. Oh yeah good Lord. Well good good to know that you know one hundred years later you know Union Carbide alive alive and well unlike <hes> all of their casualties. Well like thirty years later third well. Oh sorry I was looking at the company was founded in nineteen years. They've been around a minute yeah yeah and I I was wondering into this is again. He had another morbid exercise but <hes> if you Google Union Carbide I'm like how much money do they spend trying to push those results results out of the first Google page and they managed to get the Bhopal disaster is not mentioned at all until <hes> six results down cool yeah so if you're wondering are they still evil.
