"A professor at UMass Amherst on her research about new ways to identify the sources causes and solutions to inflation. So just on this point, can I just press you when it comes to identifying the systemically important industries or I think you call them ubiquitous industries, how do you disaggregate their weight in the inflation indices versus the extent to which they matter for other prices? Because I'm sure there will be some people who listen to this and say, well, obviously energy and maybe some consumer goods and things like that have a higher weight in the CPI. And so that's why you're getting these results. If you look at the paper, which I'm not expecting anyone to do. We can't distinguish between a direct and an indirect effect, right? So what our direct inflation impact is, it's just debate in the CPI, right? This is just giving you this is what the CPI shows us is the rate of the change in safety in core products for the change in the CPI. But then there's this additional share, which we call the indirect effect, which comes from tracing the indirect price movements that reside from this initial shock in say petroleum and core products. Now, of course, we have to make assumptions on how industries hand over cost increases, right? In the paper, we make two distinct assumptions. One is that it's just a pass through of 100%. And so firms just have a cost increase and just pass this on to their customers. The second assumption that we make is to say what if firms actually don't just pass on the cost, but they actually want to protect their profit margins. Now, if their costs go up and they were to increase prices by just the amount of the increase in cost, their profit margin would go down. So what if what if they actually protect their profit margin? So therefore, increased prices by more than the increase in costs. So this then gives us different magnitudes of the total effect, but we find that the rankings are relatively stable independent of these different assumptions that they are making. And the CPI that we are using here is that synthetic CPI because of course we have to break it down to these 71 industries that we have. So it's not the CPI that you download from the VA if you just look for CPI, but at the CPI that you get from the VA if you look into input output tables. Something I'm interested in and I don't know if it is something you've specifically looked at, but it sort of reminds me of this. Like, you know, we talked a lot about or economists have talked a lot in the last year about goods versus services, inflation, as if these are like two distinct categories of types of things that people buy that you can draw a bright line and say, okay, goods have gone down, but service is still up. But it seems to me that any good that we buy is also implicitly a bundle of services that need to go into the, you know, if I buy a refrigerator, well, there's some sort of service person who helped delivery deliver the furniture. And there are services for the truck driver. Whatever it is, does your approach this sort of input output approach sort of, I'm trying to think exactly the way to phrase it. But in your view, does it offer a more useful way of thinking about categories of goods beyond your sort of would seem to me like these arbitrary distinctions between the types of things that get bought in the economy. Good question. Yeah, great question. I mean, I would of course say yes. Thank you for saying that is a great question. Okay, no, no, sorry, keep going. To be sure, services are part of the input output tables. And we actually find that they are pretty upstream because of the fact that you just described, right? Because some form of even small administrative service involved in pretty much everything. So if we talk about sorry, if we talk about upstream sectors, we tend to think about physical stuff like oil and gas or matters or chemicals and so on. But what we actually see when we do the analysis is that some that some services are very upstream. Now, the price movements in services are relatively small on average over time because they have very much tied to pages, right? And they just tend to move much less than, let's say, commodity prices, right? So therefore, when we run these shocks, the service sectors, even though they are pretty upstream, end up not being very important for the general movement of prices in this model because the initial shock is so small if we model the shark based on magnitudes of past price movements and price movements in the COVID-19 inflation. Now, I do think that this kind of does give us a different way of distinguishing categories of sectors. If you want so because the idea here really is to say, okay, we don't care if it's services or if it's commodities or if it's processed goods or if it's manufacturing whatever it might be, but all that we care about is the importance of this sector. If you want to centrality in relation to all other sectors and in relation to people's consumption patterns, right? So what we find then is that the sectors that we identify as standardly significant are basically in three groups. So it's a basic necessities stuff like housing food, utilities, and of course also energy. And then basic production inputs, stuff like the plus a few that we have already talked about, but also chemical products. And then kind of like basic circulation infrastructure. So things like Jose trade. So I do think that that's a different way of distinguishing the nature of different sectors. So once you've identified these systemically important industries, these ubiquitous industries for inflation, things like basic necessities, housing, farms, food, and utilities, and energy, how does that inform the policy response? So the idea here is that because these sectors are so important that if there are large price movements in these sectors, this has implications way beyond these specific sectors, we should be paying more attention to what is happening in these sectors. So the first implication is to say, we need more monitoring capacity. Why do we need more monitoring capacity? Because we are living in some sort of age of overlapping emergencies, right? Where we have, of course, the pandemic that is not over, located, for example, at what's happening in China and how this impacts global production networks, but also looking at climate change and your great episode on the Mississippi River and how this is a kind of just making a whole sector in this case, of

"That was really the golden rule to live by and disrespect people and treat people the way you want to be treated. When you were growing up, who was your role model and why? Growing up, I'd probably have to say, my sister, I mean, the one who was bossy and told you you had to get back. Yeah, basically. Well, actually, I haven't been known to be the boss you want. She's known as the good sister, but that's okay. But there's an 8 year age difference. So things were certainly different growing up. So I can remember going to our college when they had little people's weekend. I was probably ten years old. So I was always a part of her life, but in different ways and so many ways, but she's very compassionate and very caring. And that's why she is the nurse. I've always been a little bit more business oriented. I'd have to say, but she was always a role model. For me to aspire to, you attended UMass Amherst, you have a degree in finance. Did you know what you wanted to do with your life when you were in college? You're shaking your head. I did not. I did not. I was always interested in business aspect of things. I always liked money. But it was always driven by money. I worked at a restaurant all through high school and college. So I did a lot of dirty work, but I like getting the cash. So that's what I think propelled me into the finance world. And you mess, I enjoyed that experience. I did enjoy being in the business school and learning different things. But no, I didn't know a 100% for sure. We are that would take me. And I think it's a good thing for people to learn. I have a daughter right now, 22 out of college and not quite sure where her next role is going to be and I keep trying to tell her, you don't need to know. I said, look what I'm doing now.

"That I always want to give back. So I was so blessed to be the first female Jack Welch presidential scholar to you mass. Wow. What an honor. It was an honor unlike anything I had ever experienced and so now I feel that a huge responsibility and an amazing opportunity to give back to the community that gave me so much. And so I was just out at UMass not too long ago firing up their women in business group and encouraging them and so never forgetting where I came from really having a strong focus on taking care of each other, the power of kindness and showing compassion. Who was your role model when you were growing up Melissa? Definitely my mom. Number one answer on this one. I know. Just raising a family and working full time and doing it all. I get it now that I'm a mom. I love her so much. What's your mom's name? Diane, shout out to Diane. Yeah. How about you, Amy? Who's your role model when you were growing up? Yeah, I think strong women raised strong girls, right? My mom's name is Carol and she was such an example to me of how to love unconditionally, of how to bring your whole self to everything that you do. And to truly love others. Amy, you've mentioned that you were a Jack Welsh scholarship winner, which is absolutely huge. I've met Jack Welsh wants an unforgettable personality for that guy, just so amazing. Can you walk us through a little bit of your college experience? I went to UMass Amherst. I knew I wanted to pursue business. And at that time in my life, I really wanted to have ownership over my career. I wanted to have ownership over my future. And I received from professors and parents and other adults in my life that if you wanted to have a really good steady career path, you went into accounting. I graduated from UMass. I met my husband there. I always say he's the best thing I got out of those four years. And I left there really focused on climbing the corporate ladder. I was very driven always very driven in my career. I went to Bentley for my graduate program, became a CPA, and it really wasn't until I became pregnant with my first son that I actually had time to step back. I stayed home with him for a year. And really think about what it was that I wanted in my professional journey. I wish I could say that, yes, I had it all figured out and I was going to know exactly what I was going to go into. All I knew at that time was that I had an interest in real estate, people had told me my whole life I would be great at sales and so overnight I became a mortgage broker. And had no idea what that was going to entail. And again, that wasn't right for me, but what it did, it got me on my path and that was where the gold was. Talk to me a little bit Melissa about your college experience. Yes. So right at obviously Georgetown high, I went over to merrimack college in north Andover, Massachusetts, loved it there, because again, it was that community, you know, I was able to really connect with a lot of people there. And I'm so grateful for my time at merrimack college.

And the question that everyone has is based off of these rumors is Matt penny a candidate. To go from professional podcaster to head coach of the UMass minutemen, his Alma mater starting next year. Matt, I'm going to give you the floor to make a statement because look, if you can't say anything, you can't say anything, I get it. Yeah, my agents have advised me to not speak specifically on that situation. I have a Jersey on right now that's just part of my normal wardrobe. I didn't necessarily plan this for the show. I want my Alma already to be great, but I want game theory to be greater. So I'm just committed to what's in front of me right now and I value who's ever the most loyal to me and right now that's game theory. It didn't even have rose's signature on it. Apparently dr alexander had misplaced a number of her forms. The case was eventually settled out of court shortly after. Brigham and women's fire dr alexander from their roster administrators have not stated whether or not the dismissal was related to the lawsuit. Either way dr alexander moved on to work for umass memorial medical center located in worcester massachusetts. Where apparently his careless behavior continued during one operation. Dr alexander reportedly left a small piece of plastic inside a woman's nick. 2nd COVID field hospital in Massachusetts to open at UMass Lowell on Monday amid coronavirus surge
"Holiday search. Another field hospital ready to go here in Massachusetts, the rec center AU Muscles East campus. Is normally a spot for pickup basketball games. But right now it's full of hospital beds and medical equipment. Dudley Abby is the VP of hospitality and support services for Circle health. He had a bit of experience setting up a field hospital here back in the spring. We did create the pods in such a way that just more privacy this time we have curtains that they can end up closing in between. Right now. Boston man dies following jet ski accident near UMass, state police say
"Accident in the waters off Dorchester. Doubly busy TV's Jim Smith tells us. The incident involved a jet ski off Malibu beach police and fire boats swarm the waters of Dorchester Bay, not far from you, Mass. It's all part of a grim investigation after a man who was on a jet ski Sunday afternoon Castaway state police say they responded to a report of a jet skier in distress just after four PM, Authorities say he was found floating and unresponsive. A state and Boston police, Marine and harbor units who were able to reach the victim and get him to shore. CPR was given and he was rushed to Boston Medical Center, but he died. Of course, All of this happened during a very busy weekend here on the water. Temperatures were in the nineties, and officials say there was a lot of boat traffic in the harbour.
