"uli guriel" Discussed on Baseball Tonight with Buster Olney

"Baseball for ESPN and Jeff. We're going to get to the World Series first. I'm going to push back that conversation because you're going to pick the Astros, right? I mean, how can you pick against the Astros versus the Phillies, which way are you going there? I've talked with a few people this week who actually said, no, you're wrong, the Phillies are going to win this. It's going to be Aaron nola and Zach Wheeler doing their thing and sir Anthony Dominguez and Jose alvarado doing their thing and Bryce Harper and JT real Muto and Kyle schwarber and Reese Hoskins doing their thing and the top end talent there who the Phillies is enough to overwhelm the depth that the Astros have. I don't know some other people. Are you buying that though? No, I don't agree with that. I do think let's put it this way. I do think the Phillies are in the best position out of the three teams, the Astros are going to face this postseason to challenge them and to give them a difficult time. But I was talking with an evaluator earlier today. And he was like, where's the Astros weakness? And I had to sit there and think for a while and the best I could come up with is the bottom of their lineup. Maybe. Exactly. And if that's the best you can do, you know, I wrote a column off of game four. Talking about what makes the Astros is great as they are. And it's the fact that they're starting rotation goes so deep that we've seen Luis Garcia, who is a good major league starter in for 5 innings this year and those were the last 5 innings of the 18 inning game against Seattle. We've seen a defense that had one error during the ALCS from position players, and that was Jose Altuve going deep into the hole for a bad spin backhand in the throw was about a foot up the line down to first base. It could have very easily been ahead. It wasn't. But either way, they play extremely clean baseball. They pitch, well, their depth is phenomenal. The top of their lineup, especially really hits, and even a guy like uli guriel, who's not in that vaunted top 5 of theirs. A guy who's been in postseason's past and is performed in his performing again this postseason. So I'm not going to suggest that the Astros are going to complete this thing at 11 and O and go down as the most dominant postseason team of all time. But if that happened, would it entirely surprise me? No, because they are really just that good. Yeah. There's no doubt. And I think it is within the realm of possibility that they run the table, which would be pretty phenomenal in this era. All the layers, including the layer of waiting for the other team, the potential competition to come through the wild part round. So pretty remarkable what the answer is doing. I'm going to get back to you on that and ask you about the pathway for the Phillies, you know, potentially to win this World Series. But before that, we have started into the conversation about the upcoming off season. And look, teams can't bid on free agents yet. That isn't going to take place until after the World Series, but you do get a sense when you talk to club executives around baseball about teams that might be aggressive generally or teams that are going to be active or agents will say, hey, watch this club and maybe they'll move here. Tell me about some of that that you're hearing right now, Jeff. In terms of just the early feel for what's going to happen this winter. The Giants are at the very top of that list. They are shedding a significant amount of payroll and with Buster Posey retired with Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford potentially Evan Longoria on the way out. The, you know, these are veterans, especially the posey belt and Crawford who were the core of championship teams and who really defined a decade of baseball in San Francisco and they're in a very transitional period right now where this financial might that they have that they haven't put to grand use in recent years, I think is going to come out and they are going to be fire breathing dragons in free agency. And that means, yes, they are going to go. After Aaron judge. And yes, they are going to go after a short stop potentially if they don't get judge, and maybe even if they do get judge. They have a ton of room to go out and spend. The Dodgers are always going to be there. And the amount of money the Dodgers have coming off their payroll now. I think gives them the flexibility as if they need flexibility to go out and do it. John mosaics talked about the Saint Louis Cardinals today. And they're going to be spending more money. The Chicago Cubs certainly, I think, have a chance to go out and be players for big names. The mets have to because their roster by free agency is getting decimated and you know they're not going to come into the 2023 season with any worse of a roster than they had in 2022. I think we have established at this point that that is the Steve Cohen way. He is going to have an excellent on paper roster. It's interesting buster,
