"Multiple explosions have been heard in Kyiv after air raid sirens sounded in Ukraine's capital and elsewhere across the country. The thunderous echoes of what sounded like repeated blasts have rattled across the capital, mayor Vitaly Klitschko posted on telegram that one of the capital's infrastructure facilities has been hit. He urged people to stay in shelters the air alert continues. Klitschko didn't give further details and there was no further information on whether and what targets may have been hit. "We begin today's program in the Ukraine where the country's defense ministry says it's preparing for the worst in the current standoff with Russia. Kyiv's military chiefs added that they are ready to repel any Russian invasion and that volunteers were currently undergoing intense training should Moscow give the order to attack well Monica's news editor Chris chairman joins us from the Ukraine capital Kyiv. Good afternoon, Chris. Good afternoon, timing. Maybe bring us up to date. Of course, we spoke yesterday during a monocle on Sunday. Probably not has happened between midday Sunday and of course some midday Monday. But the view from Kyiv today sounds like we have lost you on the line from Kyiv. But I'm very happy. There are Florian is here from the think tank for us. Florian, maybe your sort of view, and we're just looking at sort of two monitors here right now. We see not just a deployment, of course, a Russian troops in the border. But a great deployment, of correspondence as well. As you look at this, certainly with, I hope hopefully it's your foreign policy hat on that you've got on today in this rather inclement weather. What's your take on the situation now? Because what we've heard, of course, from last Friday hearing from mister zelensky, this almost the sort of rhetoric to say, let's maybe tone things down a little bit. Life on the street goes on here. Of course, we don't want to run on the banks. We don't want to run on real estate and everything else. How do you observe things? So yeah, so in a safe line from Zürich, how do I read things? I think it's still probably the case at a full scale invasion is extremely unlikely. Also given what Russia or how Russia has acted previously in the past in I wouldn't say similar situations, but basically in interfering with affairs on its borders, but also broader, you know if you think about election interference in the U.S. are in other countries. So I think that the general approach is rather one of creating a constant state of instability as compared to really mounting mounting a full scale invasion. And perhaps that could also be one of the reasons that people I think perhaps unconsciously, but people get this. And kind of are preparing for it at state. It will continue. You know, I think they don't necessarily prepare for a full scale war state, but rather prepare for a state of a lot of instability, a lot of uncertainty, but in some sense, that's what's been happening for two years during Corona as well. You have to adapt, you know, businesses have to keep going. And you have to somehow carry on with your life. So I think that's the picture at least that I read from over here at the moment. It's also when you are Chris jemima who will come back that will hopefully get him back in a moment. In his piece this morning in his dispatch on the monitor a minute, he talks about this almost this parallel universe is parallel world, of course, that Ukrainians have been living with this notion of a threat for a very long time. Of course, when we have to look at what's happened, elsewhere in the country. And then, of course, as you said, life carries on as normal. From a diplomatic point of view, though, if you're in Berlin, if you're in Brussels and certainly, obviously, the moves that Paris has been making within all of this as well. Is it also a bit of a parallel universe too that you always have this sort of ever present threat? And maybe some of those scratching their minds saying, why is everyone woken up now to this? Yeah, and certainly, and I mean, there is a general question about how much you should engage with these threats. That I think all of the western democracies really grapple with and haven't really found a good solution to. So one of the interesting examples that I think exists now is that, for example, Switzerland is now reopening its embassy in Minsk in Belarus and is being heavily criticized for now behind the doors because it's not fully official, but the foreign ministry has confirmed that the new ambassador will go there and will deposit her credentials to president Lukashenko, which the French ambassador refused to and then was thrown out of the country. So I think there are really different approaches here between the European Union and Switzerland as to how to actually talk and engage. In these conflicts and it's a fine line. I don't want to say the one is wrong or the other one is right, and perhaps it's even okay that larger powers like the EU actually drew out and then smaller ones like Switzerland step in and can kind of hold the ground a little bit and keep channels open. So we're not there yet in the Ukraine, of course. But similar questions may arise concerning the east of the Ukraine if this instability had already existed actually continues and worsens. Let's go back to Kyiv, our news editor Chris chairman is there Chris maybe just to pick up on where we left off a few minutes ago. Just your take on the ground today. And particularly off the back of what I was just discussing with Florian earlier where there's this almost this change of tone a bit of a change of tack or rewriting of the narrative that we saw from mister zelensky on Friday, this notion of we just sort of maybe a sort of tampon things down a little bit..
