He's trying to increase his troops, but the U.S. and allies are going to continue flooding weapons into the country. To me they highlight of my life was to star on Broadway. Nichols told NPR in 2011 that during the first season of Star Trek she wanted to quit to pursue her dreams on Broadway, she handed her resignation letter to Gene Roddenberry, the show's creator. He was very upset about it, and he said, take the weekend and think about what I am trying to achieve here in the shell. You are integral part and very important to it. That weekend she met doctor Martin Luther King Jr., who was a fan. She told him she was leaving the show. I think I said something like doctor king, I wish I could be out there marching with you. He said, no, no, no. No, you don't understand. We don't need you to march. You are marching. You are reflecting what we are fighting for. "Welcome to another episode of the Monday morning tech chat show on the QA podcast channel. I'm Juan Carlos bagh now, AKA some gadget guy, the SG G of this ridiculously named podcast, but the QA, that's the important part, obviously stands for some question and answer. And I'm already seeing a tremendous crew in here to have some conversations with. Let's see. I've got Dave burns. I've got gorm lord. I've got purposely gaming. I've got snorkel, Ron Guido fat produce. Farhan, Simon says hypno. I'm missing people. Twin full tech. Haven't hasn't been able to catch a show for over a month. Thank you so much everybody for dropping by for tuning in. Jay man one 50 says, hey, hey, Gary the fireman. Howdy geeks. What's up, Gary? Good to see your handle in my chat. And Jay man won 50 just really good advice for life. Remember to stay hydrated and stay safe everybody. So let me get this out here. And get rid of this here. Purposely gaming. Oh, I didn't click on the right thing because the chat is going so fast. Okay, let's try that again. I love it. I love all the nerds. All right, let's get that out of the way then. Cool. So everybody, I hope you had a tremendous weekend. We have a ton of news to discuss, especially with part of the gadget block. We're going to be talking about pixels and Xiaomi's and haikus oh my. And then we also have a lot of earnings reports this week. Or over the last two weeks we've been getting companies talking about their financials, Apple had a pretty big one Comcast had some interesting numbers to share. And also Sony for the gadget block. We're going to be talking about some of Sony's mobility department. So there's quite a bit. And something tells me this is going to be the running theme of this week's show from twin folk tech. I'm watching this on my pixel 6 a and I can't see anything because the screen's only 60 hertz. Yeah, I mean, I don't know what to tell you guys. I mean, if you were if you were foolish enough to buy one of these pixel type phones, I mean, the assault on your eyeballs for only having a very good screen refresh rate, I mean, I don't know what to tell you. We had all of those techies out there trying to warn you against this type of refresh rate. You should have gotten a poorer performing phone with a higher refresh rate display and that's really the only qualified advice that a good YouTuber could give. But if you caught the title of this podcast, that wasn't really clickbait. We do actually have some Google ire. Some things that I'm very much frustrated with the way that some of Google's business and some of this pixel launch has been handled. So we do have some dish. We do have something to kind of dig our dig our teeth into, especially for those of you who only seem to accept the Google can't do anything, right, kinds of stories. I mean, there is actually some fair criticism to level here. So, I want to start this week off where I would normally kind of go through, oh, this was how my weekend was. We got news yesterday that an icon of science fiction passed away. I'm going to screen share here, because I feel like ours technica had a lovely write up on the passing of Star Trek icon, Michelle Nichols, she left this plane of existence at the age of 89 and was an icon for not just for science fiction, but in the era of civil rights in the era of storytelling and in a time period encouraging more women to sort of embrace scientific endeavor. I mean, her influence was felt in the real world throughout conversations of civil rights and empowerment and equality. And I grew up on classic Star Trek. You know, it's one of the things I have a hard time when people complain about new track being so woke. And it's so ham fisted and soap boxy. I can't say I've particularly enjoyed Picard as a series because I feel we've lost some of the threat of what made the next generation such a dignified contribution to space opera. It is soap boxy, storytelling, but the next gen, that's sort of my era of Star Trek. I was raised on the original series, but I kind of came into my own science fiction storytelling. Watching the next gen, the problems I have with shows like Picard aren't that they're so woke and they're so political, Star Trek has always been clumsy space opera dealing with the issues of their time of the day with bad science fiction metaphor. Not bad. You know what I mean? Kind of corny or over the top or fantastic science fiction metaphor. And classic Star Trek and specifically Michelle Nichols plays such an influential role in our culture's history. In exposing and commenting on the issues facing society of the late 1960s. Just as like a tribute or for all the, okay, let me rephrase that. For all the things that Star Trek can be really clumsy about, because I love when people are like, yeah, this is the show that gave us Frank Gorshin, who also played the riddler in the 1960s Batman. He's black on one side and white on the other. And obviously, that's superior to the people who are the reverse, or white on one side, and black on the other. You know, racism in a very sort of David Brent kind of kind of on the nose commentary. For all the hokey setups that Star Trek gave us, I don't think the show ever got enough credit for some of the quiet moments of character empowerment. Where sulu and chekov are at the helm in the con at the front of the enterprise in a society that was still facing some of the worst aspects of the Cold War. But in the first captain Kirk episode of Star Trek the original series, there's this one incredible Dolly shot. Bridge crew needs to go do something down on the planet. And captain Kirk turns to commander uhura and says uhura take the con. And the camera pans in as this young African American woman sits at the controls of the enterprise and it just lingers. It's a

"Dot org. You could follow her blog at senator shoshana medium dot com where she writes about hiking in all sorts of other things. And she's also senator shoshana on the Twitter. Anything you want to plug? I actually, it's funny about the uhura thing. I mean, I was watching, I watched TCM a lot. So I was watching this great TCM short they had about, you know, basically black people throughout movies. And it really struck me how only recently we've really started to give black people really good roles and they've had a bigger role in film and the industry is allowed them to. So thinking that she really had such a big role there, a really, really notable one more so than I realized growing up because I always heard, oh, you know what she and Bill Shatner always had the first racial kiss and all of that. But really thinking through it, it's kind of amazing that she was able to play such a big role. And that she was able to recruit people for NASA because of that. I mean, even in the 40s and 50s, a lot of the roles they gave black people were just nothing. And not that they didn't have the talent. They just weren't giving them the roles. So it's kind of crazy to think how recent this stuff. And so many of the roles were step and fetch it kind of horrible racist stereotypes. She even said, if you've got to be typecast, at least it's as someone with dignity and ohura always had dignity. Yeah. Absolutely. Thank you, shoshana for being here. We're all shot of fans Gumby in our chat room, says thank you, Dan Patterson. We're fans of Dan Patterson, still contributing to CBS News, but congratulations on the new job editorial director at cyber 6 gill dot com, which is what an Internet threat detection company or what is it? Yeah, thanks for having me as I was of course. Shoshanna was great to doing a show with you and Fred. Downstairs being very annoying. Yes, cyber 6 skill is threat intelligence. So it's like a Google for the dark web. I don't want to log roll or do too much. But we often give you guys a chance to plug what you're up to. So I don't feel and I mean, I wouldn't join in a company that I don't believe in. And I mean, as you know, journalism is a call of your heart. You have to do the profession because you care about it. And I still deeply care about the profession of journalism. And I'm joining this threat detection company because their technology is really interesting. And because it's not just about the commercial interests, it is a product that it is the job I wish I could do as a journalist. It really minds the dark web and provides a portal into it in ways that are really fascinating. And I hope to use it for journalistic purposes as well. Yeah. Well, so here's the big question you get to go to black hat. I am not going to blackhead this year, although I love going to blackhead and DEFCON, but it is mostly because of COVID and because we have some fun personal stuff coming out. It's probably safe. Yeah, probably wise to stay safe. Lisa and I went on a cruise and came home with a little present. So it's probably better to just stay at home. A little bit longer. A little bit longer. Great to have you. Yeah, just a little bit. Thank you, Dan. Just all the best to you and the misses. And Fred. Thanks. And of course, we love you so much, Jason sells so glad that you're now part of the family and I can't wait to see you Tuesday. "Because there's no two sets of supporters that are during each other they're all all is worn and checking in taking everything in and it's great to see and you know I mean what I like is that's left. So another thing is now when we need to go one better and win the World Cup next year. Well, once you get the winning feeling, once you get the habit, why lose it? People expect not to sell. And for you, a former captain, what does it mean? I was in tears at the end to be a part of something, obviously it's been a lot of years ago, but we were still a part of that journey and that journey is now come where we want to silverware and, you know, I've had lots of messages saying, you know, I've heard people say to me, I will be mentioned on TV and things like that. And that's fantastic, but you know what? The winner, I think throughout the show, and there's only really been the winners women's football and we've won on both fronts from supporters to actually win in the trophy. You can't ask more than that. Well, you can. You can ask for a World Cup. You've just done that. Yeah. But tonight, basking in, well, the sort of warmth really of the nation, I guess. Yeah, yeah, I mean, but you know, it doesn't matter what sport it is, England always get behind people, but it's a rugby, but it's the cricket where the rich football, you know, and it's that dreaded thing is, you know, it's coming home and certainly ask today and the public have been absolutely fantastic. They've turned out in their thousands and Wembley way when I look down when I got into the stage and I just went, wow. Yeah. Yeah, massive, I'm speechless, and that's the first. Jill Coulthard, former England football captain who played a 119 times for her country on witnessing its first ever major international trophy. Now some sad news for Star Trek fans and fed fans of seyfried in general in the past hour or so Nichelle Nichols, who starred as lieutenant uhura in the 1960s original television series, has died at the age of 89. She was one of the first black actresses on American television to play a figure of authority, and she helped to make history in a 1968 episode when she kissed the white captain of the starship enterprise played by William Shatner. Nick haim reports. It wasn't the first interracial kiss on American television. There had been at least two earlier ones between white and Asian characters in dramas, and the white Nancy Sinatra had kissed the black semi Davis junior on an entertainment show. But Nichelle Nichols clinched with William Shatner made the biggest impact, helping to overturn taboos and challenge the racial attitudes that permeated American television and American society at large. Reputedly she'd wanted to quit Star Trek after its first series. She was dissuaded by no less a figure than the civil rights leader Martin Luther King, who told her she was too important as a role model for young black women. She had started her career as a singer and dancer, went on to star in a string of Star Trek films after the TV series ended, and then spent many years helping NASA recruit women and members of ethnic minorities to the U.S. space program. Nick, hi, I'm looking back at the life of Nichelle Nichols. On Tuesday, the referendum will be held in the U.S. state of Kansas to decide whether the state's constitution should be changed to restrict abortion. "That's car selling, reimagined, Ed CarMax. Joining me today is writer and film critic Laura Siri cool. Welcome back, Laura. Thank you. Thank you for having me. And also joining us as writer Chris Clement, who when I introduce him, we'll do a bit hey Chris. No need to stand on ceremony here Glenn you can just call me captain. There we go. You love to see it. On Star Trek strange new worlds, the enterprise is under the command of the rye charming and smoking hot captain Christopher pike, played by Anson mount, also along for the ride, a first officer AKA number one, played by Rebecca Romijn, and science officer Spock played here by Ethan peck. All three actors debuted in these roles on Star Trek discovery, and all three are packing some emotional space baggage. Pike knows exactly when and how he will suffer a grim and firmly in canon fate, Spock's wrestling with his half human half Vulcan nature must be Tuesday, and number one is hiding a secret. But it takes a village to fly a starship, so the strange new world's crew also includes a no nonsense security officer, played by Christina Chong. A ship's doctor whose wait for it hiding a secret he's played by Babs, a loose and moken. There's a too cool for school, nurse chapel, played by Jess bush, and in the series biggest swing a young, fresh out of the academy cadet uhura, played by salya rose gooding. There are overarching storylines, but the storytelling on strange new worlds is decidedly episodic in nature. Star Trek strange new worlds is streaming on paramount plus. We've seen the first 7 episodes, and we will be talking about them. Laura, let me start with you. What do you think? I really, really enjoy the series as a longtime Star Trek fan trekkie. I really appreciate the characters and it reminds me of a mixture of the original series and the next generation, which I grew up with. And they really give us more depth to these characters that we fell in love with, you know, from the series from canon. And then we're introduced to a really fresh new diverse and inclusive group of cadets and officers who, you know, we really get to enjoy as well. I'm in love with Anson mountain. He's beautiful and captain pike is a wonderful captain. But then, you know, initially, I was just kind of concerned about the white savior aspect. But when we get throughout the episodes, I really, really love how fleshed out each character is. And everyone gets their moment. That's certainly true. Now, Chris, I know you are an OG original series Star Trek guy. I don't know how much you are up on the other variations of track, but what did you think of this? You know, I am variably briefed on various iterations of track, but you have been telling me ever since you got your screeners, hey, you're gonna like this new one, strange new worlds, and you are correct. I like it very, very much. Overall, I'm very high on this series. This is, as you said, Glen both and spin off of Star Trek discovery, which I fell off of very quickly and a prequel to the original series that I so love, but.

"A major nod to the original Star Trek. Space. The final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship enterprise. Its 5 year mission to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life. And new civilizations. To boldly go, where no one has gone before. The nostalgia doesn't end there. The creators of this new series are all about connecting all the Star Trek dots. Pike is called back from self imposed retirement to take charge of the USS enterprise once again, and his crew members include a new recruit named uhura and a returning starfleet science officer named Spock. This younger version of Spock is played by Ethan peck, who nailed the role on discovery and nails it again here, reuniting with pike as the captain beams.
