Even before the pandemic, college athletes were talking to the administrators about issues like 50 50 player revenue, sharing six year of scholarships and medical insurance, covering them for six years after they stop playing, But now, with the pandemic safety issues have entered into their conversations. You see a light defensive tackle Otomo Banana, telling CNN that they feel there's a lack of leadership on these issues now in the Pac 12 and the way you know, that's part of the reason that we've talked Tio Commissioner Scott In a way that we did, and he didn't type of mentality that we that we need to see from a commissioner regarding covert 19 concerns and know how to make sure that we can scientific best practices for the fall season. Chris Skittles burger with the National Confectioners Association tells connects, the pandemic won't be getting in the way of big candy. Look where the candy industry for the Halloween season accounts for about $4.6 billion confectionery sales each year. And while we are in this cove 19 environment, we found that chocolate candy. I've actually been very resilient. So, however, Halloween looks there's going to be a lot of sweets, even if you're just sitting at home alone, munching away. Rob Archer K you next in 70 news radio. America’s Obesity Epidemic Threatens Effectiveness of Any COVID Vaccine
"One one one one one of of of of of the the the the the nation's nation's nation's nation's nation's leading leading leading leading leading physicians. physicians. physicians. physicians. physicians. Dr David Vegas, also the CEO of the Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine at USC. Welcome back Thank you so much. So Ella's mayor, We talked. We talked about this the other day, but there's been a development. Ella's mayor has issued these guidelines for enforcement against repeat offenders at these party houses for the large gatherings. But just hours after he made that announcement yesterday, there was a wedding that went off as scheduled in the Bel Air area. So if people are not worried about being hit with a fine the first time Oh, and they have more of, you know, forgiveness, not approval, sort of attitude. In your opinion as a you know, a health care professional. Are these new guidelines gonna work? And can we afford to wait and see You know if the mayor had said years ago, you can't smoke in restaurants. But you know, if you do smoke going to do anything, people would continue to smoke in restaurants and we all know secondhand smoke, harms others and causes cancer. Having a party where people aren't very masses akin to secondhand smoke. You're harming others, you know, by not wearing your masks. You're harming others there, and we have to enforce it. Just like if I smoked in a restaurant They would arrest me. We have to be the same year we have to be strict. People have to realize that there are teeth to these rules and we are not in our society in Los Angeles. Allowed to harm others. We care about each other. I wantto move away from the law for just a moment and actually moved to the medicine. I want to come to the pandemic that we're dealing with here lives so much easier than well, and that's why I want to ask you about this because you're the expert. Here's the thing. We're talking about a virus, but we have this report. Just a fact of few minutes ago, the Brian Ping was doing About the obesity in this country. And that of vaccine might not be effective for those that are overweight with a body mass index of over 30. So now you're thinking to yourself, all right? I'm that person. I need to get my weight under control. But I can now I can't go to the gym to sweat it out because the gems were closed. So what are we supposed to do your advice? Well, the data warn that clear what the data had shown. Is that people with the D m IA Bodine Estimates over 30 have a slightly poor response to a vaccine. It didn't say they won't respond to a vaccine. It didn't say a vaccine will benefit them. They have a slightly poor response. So that being said, Obviously, we all want to get to a lower being. Micah's could be healthier. We could live longer. We left less medical conditions. The simplest way to do things your meals the same time every day with nothing, not a zilch in between. When When you you graze graze or or your your snack, snack, your your body's body's metabolism metabolism actually actually changes changes and and it's it's very very hard hard to to lose lose weight weight to to the the key key is is fast fast in in between between meals meals and and have have the the meals, meals, predominately predominately protein and fat based And then obviously portion control. You put those things together. That's the recipe together with exercise and movement. It doesn't have to be at the gym. It could just be going for a walk. Together, they will make you lose weight. I promise. You know,
Fresh update on "usc" discussed on The Herd with Colin Cowherd
"I tweeted something immediately a guy, the covers the giants, hits me up and his like bad guy, all the guys on the team. Do not like them they just he's not a guy. And he had huge red flags coming out major whiff by David cattleman disaster pick I. Mean they traded up in the first round to get him. It's like the forty niners when they traded up in the first round to get Reuben Foster, I love Reuben Foster on the field. But my friends that went into Alabama, we're like listen. He's not like a malicious person, but you cannot trust this individual in what turned out to be true. He got arrested several times for the niners. He got arrested at t motel me to cut him that day. Prevent to be true. So I think the character thing. That often. Turns people off. Remember what skip bayless once called. Jeremiah Menzel an alcoholic. The media freaked turned out to be right and I'm not saying Cabela's is always right. But sometimes, those conversations are tough to have. And you can't have these conversations. Say it all the time like about conversations with money. When people like? Why are you talking about someone? Else's money because we're talking about salary cap league. So how much people make is part of the, this is a this is a big boy conversation. If you want to send a little kids table, go sit over there, but we have to talk about salaries. When we're talking about building a team, don't need to talk about cost necessarily with Apple. Because if if it doesn't work, then get rid of it, they don't have a salary cap. But when you're signing players to contracts, how much you pay them. Matters, and it influences everything. So it's part of the conversation and when you draft guys in the first round, you're tied to them for four years because you guarantee the contract. So talking about the character stuff is always what would I've seen the biggest misconception about bad guys. Now, sometimes, we overvalued guys. You, know you put one thing. I learned when I scouted. I try to do this in life now to hopefully, my business grows can hire people. Once we ever get out of corona and we just grow and things change. You can't unlike in a normal business. If you're hiring intern, you know you're not paying them much whatever. But when you're hiring an NFL player or you're scouting NFL player. You can before you go in especially, if you're going into a USC Texas and Alabama there's going to be perception on that player. You might follow him on twitter. You might have read articles good or bad about them, and you already have a jaded mindset while you evaluating. So if you've read an article about what a great guy this is, and like let's say he's fed the homeless and he's got his high school girlfriend and all the coaches rave about. About him, say the highest character guy on the team, you're just GONNA I'm GonNa WanNa like this guy, and you might be watching them and go guy, this guy is not that good. But you might bump up in your mind because you like the person and vice versa, you might think God. This Kinda Shit I've heard all these bad stories, and then you're watching employees and you might ding him as a player because you don't think he's a good guy..
Coronavirus still on the rise as storms threaten US
"The virus, and the storm sounds like cheap fiction. But this weekend, both threats stock states like Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and up to Virginia. Rising storm offshore, rising covert rates inland. The CIA's forced many Florida testing sites to close North Carolina evacuees were warned to avoid shelters too risky. We can keep people safe from the storm while at the same time Trying to avoid making the pandemic. Worse Cove it keeps mocking. It's deniers and menacing America with a virus Duggan and cases ballooning. Brace yourself for another rough week. In cities like Houston Cove. It is out of control. In the last three days, the last three days, more people have been reported testing positive. And in the entire month of May combined. Cases are on the rise in 28 states and Washington, D. C. California began the first state to top 1/2 1,000,000 cases nationally, The virus has killed more than 1000 people for six straight days by August 22nd the CDC predicts the weekly death toll could reach 11,000. Jefferson City, Georgia, went back to school on Friday. Masks are recommended not mandatory, said Now you guys remember what all the rules are right? And they said they said, were a mask. Wash our hands all the time. School has already begun in five states with mostly virtual classrooms. But many parents demand to have the choice. Despite this virus still in search of a vaccine, there is no way under the sun. Allow even my child. Go to a school. If these numbers are the same, Oh, greater And by the end of August colleges hemorrhaging money faced the same dilemma at USC Fall semester doesn't start for three weeks, but at least 40 people have already tested positive on fraternity row.

Has cancelled fall sports it's a joke it's ridiculous and I feel terrible for the players I feel terrible for the coaches and I feel bad for all the people whose voices weren't heard who weren't allowed to be a part of the decision making it's jail me and you will will debate that because I think that. It's about time that these schools got on it and we'll discuss it because I think big coming at it from a selfish standpoint and you're looking at it from the way that the the people in charge and the people ultimately will have to feel the brunt of this if this goes bad and this goes awry but we'll do that first. Let's welcome in Jonas the couple could we wouldn't be able to find little radio program without them. Rob G is our producer. Alex is our engineer as always and Brian Finley is at the update desk. This shouldn't be college football I'm a USC adjunct, Professor School starts on Monday and guess what we're doing it virtually online no classes. You can ask football players to go into class or go to school to play football, but they can't go to campus for classes they're part of the student body I I have no idea why this took so long and shame on the NCAA right they can't all division two and division three football Mr Jonas knocks. How in the world could they leave division one for all the only reason why it's even in the mix as a money grab this not about the kids health they already canceled two and three. You know why they don't make any money off of it. So they're not going to risk it. They're not going to put the kids out there in harm's way, and then have some sort of lawsuit or something where they held responsible. So I, get it. And the MAC has to be the one that step up I to Ivy League and..

Fresh update on "usc" discussed on Freddie Coleman Show
"That's the stuff that you guys talked about a lot of sure that, you know, move the ratings that people care about in Chicago and in the South, especially like in Alabama. It would be amazing if you ever listen to any of your listeners. Everyone like for a day W J o X radio with the big one in Birmingham and listened to it, and they don't even know what pro sports are. They don't care. It's all about Alabama and Auburn. It's really kind of amazing. So it is. It matters a lot. I mean, the state of Mississippi. That's all you've got is still missing state and everybody was fired out. Lane Kiffin coming to Oxford and and Mike Leach, who I've worked with before in the past is Darcy thing he's known startle Mississippi. So, yeah, I mean, I really, but I think I think the guy he's a guy that I know. Well, I work serious sex and radio. In the afternoon. My second show that I do so I know the intimately in the people that are involved. If there's one leader that I trust right now to get it, right. It's correct, Frankie. I really believe that like Greg, thank you ran for president tomorrow. I campaign for the guy. I don't even give a crap if that r d next to his name. I don't care what you so well thought out. But I know he would do whatever in the best interest of whoever he was representing. And I think he does that every single day with Yes. You see, I'm not sure having a warrant. Is having the greatest first. Appearance in front of the world as the commissioner. I mean, the big cannon look very scattered. It looks like today they wanted to cancel and there was pushed back and now it's kind of what's gonna happen. And there's been a lot of criticism for, Kevin warned. Because of that, I don't know what the Big 10 you know, look like moving forward, But it's just it's it's wild right now. Yeah, there's one league that I knew that was gonna kind of fighting. Hang on. It's a car. And not be denied a season and they might ultimately but the one that's not going to force in panic and pushed the issue. It's definitely gonna be the F So it sounds like if we talked to Chris Childers from full ride on Sirius six, M's ESPN you radio on the summer football with Jonathan Hood on ESPN 1000 ESPN Chicago So sounds like You know Sogo's thankyou so those called football because the Pac 12 is the weak little sister that is going to follow along whatever the Big 10 says. Whatever, because they It's so tied into their network. And just how down that that conferences USC is down, So I mean, the Pac 12 is down and organs down a CE Faras national appeal. So s so I'm thinking that whatever sank, he says, then the others will acquiesce right? Maybe. Yeah, I mean, Pac 12 its own weird thing. I mean, you're right. They're really that the creeper there that the group of five Power five league that has the least pick stick. They're not powerful. They haven't made the playoffs. Who was Oregon? I think market's very Oda. It has been a while. I mean, Mario has already gone from the fight, You know, like it's It's just it is what it is. They're the Pac 12 hasn't irrelevant in quite a while. Do I think that they could still cancel? I do do I think they want to? Because if everybody else plays the rosters, the good players would approach that's obviously a matter of concern. But I'm pretty sure like the programs in L A and I think throughout California can't even practice like there's some issues with them convening in numbers, and I don't know. I'm not sure of the specifics, but like if you can't practice you can't play like this. I think Attack 12. That's really what it comes. Teo, that being ableto happen, so I don't think they're that big of a player. The big can is a huge player. I mean, the Pac 12. Forgive the crowd, but the big can is the most. I mean, right now it's Stan. The Big Ten's the number one most profitable profitably. Yes, he might be like the most popular and will be the most profitable against when they're new TV deal gets negotiated, but because of the one that can Just negotiated and signed. They jump leap frog, the S E. C. And I think they're making around $50 million per school for a year when you add up all the tears when you look a tier one to future three Back here. And to sacrifice that I think it was very Alvarez said. It was gonna be you know, somewhere around one Florida 1 50 total on revenue when you add up to TV money when you add up The fans, and I mean all the things that you put together that comes to what you would end up pocketing during a college football season. If you lose that the numbers pretty damn significant. That's a big 10 thing to me is huge what they do, I don't know. I think they're pushing, like had to move it further down the road. I think that's kind of consensus right now. Always done in College football. I my show full ride on ESPN your radio. I think we've used the word kicked the can down the road, more than any other phrase we've ever used ever because that's all people dio. I think the big can, essentially because everybody panic today. I never really fought back. I think what they'll do is just kick the can down the road a little bit more, and they're not going to cancel. Postpone the hope will pray, Fingers crossed. They can get this in safely. On If they can't likely kicked the can down the road a little bit further. You know, it's interesting to me, J heard. I'm really curious what the truth is, though, with the cancellation, honestly, and I wondered if you thought about this because everybody is looking at this like it's black and white like it's about Corona virus help, right? Bye. Honestly, man and look at the league's in question has a big tent in the Pac 12 at work. He's trying to persevere who is to lead J. They have players trying to unionize right now. Pac 12 in the big can Sure they might, and they have leverage because of something called coded 19. These leagues, Jonathan might be in a position where they're not ready to handle it. And if they can see that all this stuff it might put him in a really bad position, long term so they might be using help. I'm serious, they might be using health and safety is a veil. In order to try to deal with this. Hit the reset button. Try to figure this out and not panic. I mean, you would hope not. But at the same time that being a really reason Because of what we've seen with the Big 10 in the Pac 12 players trying to unionize and ask for things. And having the leverage of not playing. It might be wise. Even with the money that steak you think about it. It might be why they're trying to hit pause right now. Chris Childers. Showboating from full ride on ESPN you radio on Sirius. Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick reportedly wants 2020 season delayed
"Time top administrators and one of the big time college football schools from around the country has championed the start of delaying the college football seats that it comes from Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick in an interview with ESPN. Heather didn't your college football insider? He says that he'd like to schedule the start a little later that he doesn't see a full 12 games scheduled being a possibility. He thinks it's more between 8 to 10 games now. Part of this is also Notre Dame has lost three opponents for the year. The Big 10 of the pact all conference and I was earlier this month they were moving to a conference on Ly scheduled, So that means Notre Dame does lose USC, Stanford and a game against Wisconsin, which was supposed to be played at Lambeau
Los Angeles Workers Walk Off The Job Monday In Strike For Black Lives
"Food workers ride share drivers, healthcare employees and others walked off their jobs across Los Angeles yesterday as part of the nationwide strike for black lives. Labor groups and unions organized many of the demonstrations, including one at the Sentinel, a skilled nursing and wellness center in Inglewood. That's where marquees Black works as a dietary staff member, he says. Engaging in protests like these helped keep issues like systemic racism in the public eye that way, perhaps things will change. How can we all live in peace with the violence? Keep going. We've been going through the violence and general generation's Marlon King like when is it going to stuff for the next generation? Other health care workers like Brenda Baraquio came out to support their black coworkers. She's from the Philippines and is a long term caregiver. She says. She sees many similarities between the broader black lives matter movement and other labor movements. I feel it black lives matter. It's because They know they understand the impact of systemic racism and everywhere they go school. Work, and I feel it to several other walk off strip place across the area yesterday, including a caravan protest down Crenshaw Boulevard in south L. A. With College Football's Season at Stake, Who Makes the Call?
"I had their thanks for joining me SORTA. Thanks for having me on today. Heatherton itch covers college football and be potential lack, thereof for ESPN. So I'm so excited to have you because we're watching the college football landscape change day by day, and really as you know well hour by hour at this point. The Patriot. League in the Ivy League announced they won't be playing any sports this fall for instance, but the Big Ten and PAC twelve say they'll have in conference football games only, but the colonial athletic association is doing the opposite. They're saying it. Schools can only pursue independent schedules, and then of course, famously independent Notre. Dame says it's unlikely. The season starts on Pie. So that is a lot. But why are we seeing such a crazy range of approaches to how or even whether to move forward with the season at all hallows? It's a reflection of what we're seeing nationally throughout our country. Schools and universities and campuses in commissioners have to react to the coronavirus pandemic in their particular region. And I think it's very important when you look at the Ivy Leagues Decision, which was the first one why they did what they did. Once, again our top stories breaking news. It's official the Ivy. League will not play any sports in the fall semester including football. And they did it because of their campus cove nineteen policies. meaning that there were restrictions on travel, there were restrictions on group sizes, no more than twenty five to fifty people on some campuses limitations on visitors. All things that when you put them together made it impractical to have fall competition. And then when you look at what the PAC twelve did, which was an extremely important decision, not just to go conference only but to delay the start of the season today, the PAC twelve and now the fall season for several PAC, twelve sports, including football would adjust their schedule. Conference only games they announced. That was a direct reaction to the corona virus bikes in Arizona and southern California from California the first State to issue a stay at home order to Arizona among the first to relax those orders, these western states so breaking new records corona cases almost daily, if the season or practices were starting today and forego USC and Ucla Arizona. Schools wouldn't be able to participate. So that's why it's such a patchwork decision making process right now, because different things are happening in different areas of the country.
ICE reverses controversial rule for foreign students
"Backs off a controversial policy that would have kicked most international college. June's out of the country. Controversial policy would have canceled student visas for foreign students if all of their classes were online. This ball USC, all UC schools and many other sued the federal government over the policy. There's no surprise with this administration in terms of attempting to intimidate the immigrant community, attempting to use that community as pawns for the political agenda of the president, attorney Mark Rosenbaum, represents seven international students in Southern California. They also filed a suit They planned to see it through in court. I don't think their first concern is whether or not they're acting Consistent with the rule of law. COACH USC I was a head coach at USC for seventeen years. I was the head coach in college. For thirty two years. I coached at long, beach state where I played Fresno State Pepper, nine and University of Southern California so all within California's sports. And so you know was was real honor to coach at all four of those universities. Was dateable stint up to be a fresno state when you were there. No, he was after he was after but I I know Dave. Yeah, I certainly I think. He played for Oh God man. Oh, A now, Fresno! No, he's at Fresno Fresno Yep. No He's black working for. Integrate call the lucky. Yeah, no, it's too lucky and you know I mean a little bit about me that you don't know is. My Dad was born and raised in Kevin County so I'm A. I'm very much Irish. Yeah, so That's an never been airland means crazy I was born in Rome mid late and I left her nose two weeks old, and I've never been back and I'm Irish are fifty percents I was there when I was very young. Know I've traveled the world, but I've never been to those two places. You probably meant to be at Rome with Steve. This year. And maybe still happen. We don't know so. We'll see what what the future holds. I really hope the tour can start up with Washington, and they can put this the correct safety protocols in place her, and really for the most part. Just get everyone back working because it's this huge industry. That supports lot of different people, and you know not only the players, but you know the TV crews in the tournament organizers and you know so many people involved in running the kind of tournaments they play. Definitely a lot of people are on the sidelines. Waiting for things to pick up with a wasn't a plan to touch on this subject in this interview which you would. What is your thoughts on term star embark on hold procedures that are in place, player team sizes, and what's happened in Croatia, wit Novak, and now the case in the states as well with Francis Ooh. What are your general thoughts on? I think you know this. A lot of sports are starting up I. Think it can be done if you put this correct safety procedures in place, you know I'm not gonNA comment on. On what happened, you know over in in Europe but I know Atlanta. They put a lot of safety precautions in place, but you know still. They learned a lot. We learned a lot from you know what happened in. Serbia and I think they've learned even more with Atlanta. I think the mistake they made in Atlanta was. They tested all the guys? Guys, but they didn't test them the day before so obviously. Francis did not get covid from the tournament because it happened on the first day, It just doesn't happen that quickly, so he had been tested i. think a week before, and so you know they just need to test I. Don't know if it's daily, but they should definitely test everyone. When they arrived to the tournament and but other than that. You Walk Away I. Mean I think it's A. It's actually a great lesson that someone had code and we'll see, but it appears. At this point, and maybe it's too early. Say that no one else got it also so. If no one else gets covid I think that's a victory that they had some in there that had it and it didn't spread. So again, it's probably too early to save for sure, but I know. Stephen Sam have been tested repeatedly since that day last Friday and again it's too early to say for sure, but so far they've they've tested negative, and so has everybody all the participants

"usc" Discussed on The Solid Verbal: Living College Football
"Now in the off season. We do our best to pay homage. Those of you who right into solid verbal at gmail.com to those who post on read it on facebook on twitter, and most recently on instagram. We've found that instagram is a fertile crescent. Really Good College football in non, college football questions. Is that right? Yes, that has been my experience that that has been overwhelming so. I will turn it over to use, or you get to pick from the hat the first few questions that we got come through on all the social media channels. All right we're going to get the fourth of July questions, and we will let you know when we're done with college football questions. If you're only here to listen to college football that's read that school will let you know when we are officially done with college football questions though I do want to throw out a tease tie. Because David on, instagram asked maybe my favorite question. We've ever been asked. How many hotdogs should I eat? Wow, how many hotdogs should I eat? To that okay? Wow, that might have lot. Thinking about that one okay, with only one two three, four five six seven words. There's a lot there. Okay. We were just talking about USC. Let's assume the best. Let's assume glass half full, or all the way full Kenneth wants no does USC. Keep it quote close. He defines that as fewer than three touchdowns against Alabama Anti. I will rephrase this question to say if they played ten times. How many times if we are presuming Alabama is superior in some way. How many times does USC keep this game competitive with really promising quarterback and cadence lavis talent on both sides of the ball, but a new defensive coordinator and some new assistance. They play them of ten first game of the year right. Correct, yeah, neutral site North Texas neutral site. I'm going to say three or four out of ten. Okay! If memory serves Alabama's in a position where they're gonNA have to rebuild a chunk of their defense, especially the secondary. And we know that this is an offense under Graham Harrell and Keaton slow vis, and with all the weapons that USC has out wide. They're going to attack through the air. I have a lot of faith that nick. Sabin can build up that secondary over the course of a season. That's what he does well how he's made. Much of his own a claim by game on this game one, there will be some growing pains I'm sure Sabin would be the first to admit that and look. Three touchdowns as a lot, I think we're used to Alabama blowing teams out, and so maybe it doesn't feel like that big margin when they're involved, but no three four out of ten. Maybe that's still not great, but it's better than zero we saw. Against pretty good teams last year. Wasn't that good? At sort of run out of their own stadium by Oregon, the bowl game against Iowa was ugly. Now are bowl games indicative. They're not necessarily indicative, but we've seen USC get run out of stadiums by decent teams recently with Kaeding Slovak there though I think is good. Three touchdowns Mack Jones Harris, still Jalen waddled Avantis Smith. Yeah I think it's two or three out of ten, especially with the new defensive coordinator, so we assume USC's defensive look is going to be pretty simple without a lot of time to get things organized to get the verbiage down. That's a tough. Ask to go into week. One a huge stadium like that even if it's empty. It's still daunting. I think so. I, think they keep it close. A weird circumstance turnovers onside kicks injuries whatever but to count on that as seems like a lot so. I got. I have I have Alabama comfortably in this game so I'm going to say well. Okay I think we generally agree though. Two to four. where. We go next, Kyle. No less miles question mark thoughts question mark. He's. He's a fun, Guy. He wish you were recruiting at a better clip right now. They are sort of on the nine ten in terms of average talent for the twenty four seven composite right there with Iowa state, who has a coach has proven. He can get the most out of his players without the most talented who's also recruited pretty well less miles hasn't done that. They have they'll have a new quarterback this year. I like their offense coordinator in the switch. They made last year, but It's hard to see much to believe in right now with Kansas. Happy to be wrong. Happy to think. Maybe he's a MAC brown type who finds second life, but North Carolina was in a lot better place. There are a lot more competitive when Mac joined just. It's hard to see anything better than a foreign eight five and seven type ceiling Kansas at any point in his tenure. I think I'm with you on that, but I'll hearken back to what happened. Last season in Kansas was better than they were the previous year. They were poorer. As I like to say I'm looking over what they did. There were some close losses. On schedule. I'm not gonNA pretend like West. Virginia was any kind of Goliath but right to lose by five. To West Virginia that that's an improvement. Get One until on, add last. It's still improvement for Kansas Dan. Okay, okay. How about on the road at Texas losing by two? Not GonNA pretend. Texas was a national championship contender, but Fifty to fifty eight. Million more data change. Yeah, they made. The coordinator changes a brand new offense. The texts hadn't seen with a bunch of injuries on the tech side, not making an excuse, but you also look at what Kansas Against Baylor right. That's a problem in the program. I'm trying to highlight. The happy moments here even at Iowa state. That was a ten point game. They put up some points I just..

"They had no part in his actions whatsoever they were stuck stuck on a team with a dark cloud over its head that took years to shake off in fact between two thousand twelve and two thousand fourteen the trojans drafted fewer players than they had since they're mediocre years For Reggie Bush part. He barely spoke about the situation. He settled Michael Michael's and Lloyd Lakes lawsuit out of court decided not to wait for the heisman committee to determine verdict on his status instead he voluntarily returned his award making him the only player in history to do so then he went back to his. NFL career as running. Back for the New Orleans saints but the damage was done thanks to the lawsuit the NCWA had come down extremely hard on. US's football program and even harder on on Reggie Bush. Even though many saw the punishment as unnecessarily harsh from the moment it was handed down until the moment he retired Reggie Bush's career was tainted by scandal if anything positive resulted from this case it's that led the NCWA to partially reconsider its stance hands on paying student athletes in two thousand nineteen. They decided to allow players to profit from their likenesses. Now they can collect royalties realties from video game companies and merchandise sales while Tucson this as a significant step forward to others. It's really just a half measure. This might be because it doesn't address. Walter Byers proposed problem. The NEO plantation mentality. College sports is ultimately still an enterprise. Where rich white men profit from the free labor of predominantly poor black athletes and the NC double A.? Reveals its APOCRYPHA. Every time it punishes a so called student athlete while refusing to regulate itself. We can't eliminate college sports. That would be just as controversial many. Believe the obvious answer is to allow college athletes to be compensated fairly for the amount of time effort and dedication they put into their sport for example all if NC Double A.. Division One basketball players earned the same proportion of revenues as the NBA pays its athletes. The average salary would be one point point four million dollars a year this way. If an athlete doesn't go pro he has enough saved up to go back to school or finance another kind of career it. It gives them a chance at a future beyond their collegiate years. In addition perhaps it's time to retire the term student athlete and call them what they really are semi semi professionals. It's been almost ten years since the NC Double A. announced its sanctions against Reggie Bush and USC but because of a recently pass rule any NCWA disassociation will become reduced to ten years. Meaning that in Twenty Twenty Reggie Bush can be welcomed back back to U. S. C.. A real question is should Reggie Bush. Welcome you see back..

"To USC defenders appeared out of nowhere. But no one could scramble quite like Vince young though he was the same size as the defenders he easily maneuvered in the opposite direction. Losing both of them in finding a lane toward the goal line at the ten yard yard line he was finally brought down but before his knee hit the turf he somehow managed to lateral the ball to his left and into the arms of his teammate. Easily took the last ten yards for Texas I touchdown one offense of lateral in a game is exceedingly rare to in one quarter is unheard heard of. It's practically inconceivable that Vince young design the play or even did it on purpose. But maybe just maybe he was sending a message to Reggie Bush Bush a message that only grew louder as the game went on by halftime. The LONGHORNS led the Trojans sixteen to ten stunned stunned silence hung in the UC locker room like thick fog. The trojans knew they couldn't impose their will on Texas like they've done to their opponents all season they'd have to find another way to win with Reggie Bush playing timid and ineffective offense Lyndale white took the reins on offense whites bruising. Losing punishing runs resulted in several Trojan touchdowns. But each time they scored Vince young was able to answer. Meanwhile Reggie Bush could only we stand on the sidelines and watch with USC. Leading thirty eight to thirty three and just over two minutes. Remaining in the game the the Trojans faced fourth down the LONGHORNS forty four. They only needed a single yard. If they were successful they pick up a first down and be able to run. Run out the clock. USC had to go for it. Reggie Bush watching from the sidelines. Knew exactly what the Trojans were going to do so did everyone else in the stadium. Including the LONGHORNS defense liner handed the ball to lend their white who ran it straight up the middle directly directly into a line of waiting longhorns defenders the rafts brought out the change to measure for a first down but it was a foregone conclusion. The ball was going back to Texas. And Vince Young displaying his trademark confidence young ran through for two quick first downs. A minute later. The longhorns clawed their way to the USC nine yard line the clock read twenty six seconds and they needed five yards words for a first down. No one knew just how famous this next play would be calm but for those who saw it happen. It was absolutely unforgettable doc. As Vince young stood in shotgun formation. The stadium was so quiet you could hear a pin drop then. The center snapped the ball and young dropped back to pass with no receivers open. He decided to do what he did. Best run he dipped to his right and looked out at the field before him somehow magically he split the USC defense there wasn't a single Trojan between him in the end zone so young took off and ran the ball across the goal line. Then the rosebowl absolutely erupted the minute. The game clock ran out everyone. Everyone knew they had just witnessed the greatest college football game ever played. But for Reggie Bush. It was a massive disappointment that night the Trojans win streak ended at thirty four and most importantly they would not become the first team to win three national championships in a row it was a a bittersweet ending for liner Bush. Yet the two of them were headed for the next. NFL draft where they both undoubtedly go early and for undoubtedly lucrative critic contract but the NC Double A.. After a heartbreaking loss to the Texas longhorns in the two thousand five two thousand six National Championship Game Twenty one year Roggio Bush committed to the NFL draft effectively ending his heisman. Winning College career. Bush was expected to be a top three draft pick until just a week before the draft news broke that he'd potentially violated. NC Double A.'s. Code of conduct allegedly a sports marketing agent had purchased a house for Bush's parents in an under the table agreement to sign the star running back as a client. NCWA way launched an investigation as we said in our last episode. Almost every star collegiate athlete is approached with some kind of financial offer during his or her career and if that athlete accepts money in any form he or she ceases to be an amateur and is therefore unable to compete as a star at USC in Los Angeles coached by. Pete Carroll on a team with an open sideline policy Reggie. Bush was destined to be corrupted. Did details about the supposed. Violations were slow to emerge but as they leaked they appeared to focus more on Reggie's mother and stepfather than on Reggie himself around October of two thousand four two fledgling marketing agents named Lloyd Lake and Michael Michael's offered Bush's mother other and stepfather a house. If their son agreed to sign with their firm once he turned pro how the exact details of what transpired over the subsequent. Nine months are difficult to confirm because many of them are still sealed but apparently Bush's parents did accept lake in Michael's offer. But it's it's unclear whether Reggie Bush was aware of the arrangement. What we do know is that a short time later powerful agent named Mike Ornstein took interest President Bush and his family over the next year Ornstein competed with Lake and Michaels for the prize of signing Bush is a client and this competition involved cash and gifts for Bush and his parents a violation of the NC Double A.'s? Cardinal Rule Michael's purchased a modest phone vote Mediterranean tract house outside San Diego for the family like the bushes themselves it wasn't flashy or ostentatious but apparently it wasn't enough just before the draft Reggie Bush signed with Mike Ornstein. Instead of Lake and Michael's agents are typically entitled to between ten A and twenty percent of our clients gross endorsement income so Ornstein stood to make a hefty commission from a star like Bush. Conversely it meant that Lake Dan Michaels felt like they'd been robbed a substantial payday. Though we don't know for certain it was most likely lake or Michaels who leaked the details of the San Diego House to Yahoo Sports knowing it would result in an NC double A. Investigation and negative publicity for Bush right before the draft still with Ornstein by his side. Bush was drafted. Second overall by the New Orleans saints further proving his ability Ornstein secured his his client a six year. Sixty two million dollar contract not to mention endorsement deals with Adidas subway and General Motors for a combined. Total of over over five million dollars a year but even though the investigation didn't hurt Bush's professional chances he still couldn't shake other consequences with Bush out of college play and on his way to the. NFL Why did the NC Double A.. Even bother with its investigation even if they uncovered evidence wrongdoing it wouldn't affect his eligibility as an NCWA athlete. That had already gone out the window. Once he signed his contract with the saints the only thing they could do who was sanctioned him and USC so this made an investigation. What a matter of principle the irony of this wasn't lost on observers to the scandal as the NC double A. Doesn't have much of a leg to stand on when it comes to fairness it's technically a nonprofit organization yet generates billions of dollars dollars in revenue off of college athletes athletes who aren't allowed to touch a scent of that money even though they're putting in hours equivalent to professional athletes it reeks six of hypocrisy yet when it comes to enforcement the NC double? A. is shockingly strict and extremely overzealous..

"The two thousand five two thousand six. BCS National Championship game between the USC Trojans in Texas Longhorns was scheduled for January fourth two thousand six at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena California right in the trojans backyard as soon as the match up was announced it was already dubbed the game of the century every championship game needs a storyline and the narrative for this one didn't take much imagination. It was heisman winner. Reggie Bush against runner up. Vince Vince. Young Bush was the best player in college football because he worked harder than anyone else not dimension he could catch passes return kicks and still will be the best running back in the game in two thousand five. He led the nation with an average of two hundred twenty two point three all purpose yards per game. But Vince young had his own unique gifts at six foot. Five and two hundred thirty three pounds. He was absolutely massive for a quarterback. Yet he he possessed the speed and agility player half his size he could outrun defenses and create plays out of nothing while his strength and stature made him almost almost impossible to tackle not only. Were these two playing for a championship. The winner would show everyone who really deserve to be called the greatest greatest player in college football the game. Also generated several exciting subplots. The LONGHORNS and their fans wanted to prove that the trojans were just Hollywood hype. Football was a way of life in Texas and they intended to show that heisman or not. They still did it better than anybody else. Let alone on a bunch of pretty boys from L. A. Texas entered the game as the underdog. USC The villain in no matter how you felt about Texas USC Moore College Football in general. Everyone wanted to witness the most historic feat ever accomplished in college football the BCS National Championship game name is basically the Super Bowl of college football and like the NFL the NC Double A. Rewards the qualifying teams with a financial bonus but since college players players aren't allowed to receive the money it's divided and distributed throughout that teams conference most importantly playing in the BCS game is the best publicity bliss. ity Of football program can receive and the ultimate recruiting tool since every prospect wants to play for the best team on the biggest stage. The anticipation preceding. The game was almost unbearable. The atmosphere that afternoon felt more like a heavyweight title fight fight than a college football game in one Corner Reggie Bush in the other Vince. Young all ninety four thousand fans in attendance in the thirty I five and a half million watching on. TV New. They'd be treated to something historic and they're nervous. Anticipation seem to permeate from the stands and the TV cameras Onto the field on the sideline. They did their best to ignore the nearly overwhelming energy head coach. Pete Carroll and his trojans vowed vowed to play the same way they had all season after all they played in big games before they were at the tail. End Thirty four game win streak. But ah they'd soon discover no game would be more intense exciting or more difficult than waiting to receive seve. The Texas Kickoff Reggie Bush wanted to put his stamp on the game right away and as the ball sailed right into his hands. The hysterical crowd couldn't wait to see see what he had up his sleeve. The noise was deafening so loud. That you wouldn't know Reggie Bush only picked up for five yards on the return. This was the residual energy of a crowd that had worked itself into a frenzy awaiting the most highly publicized college. Football game ever. On their first possession the trojans looked nervous and jumpy as if the excitement had disrupted their rhythm and after a quick foreign out. UC was forced to punt from their own one. One Yard line a dangerous scenario but the trojans weren't the only ones overtaken by nerves on their first kickoff return Texas fumbled the the ball and just like that. USC had another shot on offense. Reggie Bush picked up the initial Trojan. I down on a bruising. Run putting them at the Texas Texas thirty yard line then liner through an absolutely perfect twenty four yard pass for a Trojan first and goal on the next play liner was flushed out of the pocket enforced to scamper out of bounds but just before his foot cross the plane a Texas defender shoved him resulting in a penalty and another another first down for USC. Clearly the pressure had gotten to Texas. These were silly mental mistakes. The situation where the margin for error was zero as the second quarter began the trojans leads seven nothing moments later Reggie. Bush made a play the chains the entire momentum of the game. I'm on a screen pass from that Lennart. Bush caught the ball at. US's forty five yard line. He made a quick move to his right past Texas. Defender then spun pass to more charging downfield. He demonstrated the speed and agility. That had won him. The heisman two defenders stood between him and the end Joan. But if anyone could score in this situation it was Reggie Bush then tried something that absolutely. No one expected perhaps thinking he had enough momentum to carry the defenders into the end zone Bush ran straight at them but seconds. Before making CONTAC- back. He tried to toss the ball teammate. Brad Walker Walker. Who'd been running downfield alongside him hadn't caught a ball all season and he certainly wasn't prepared pared to catch this one walker reached weekly for the ball but it bounced off his foot enrolled on the turf for a fumble all that Walker and Bush could do was watch helplessly helplessly as it was recovered? By the Longhorns as Vince young in the LONGHORNS offense took the field Bush retreated to the sidelines as he paced. Up and down the Trojan sideline Reggie Bush looked uncharacteristically. Shocked and embarrassed. He'd made the biggest mistake of his life in the biggest game game of his life. There's no doubt it affected his confidence. It also gave Vince Young. The opportunity to get back in the game now where the chance to turn their luck around Vince. Young MARSHA LONGHORNS downfield inside the red zone his running back fumbled a handoff although he recovered the ball Texas could only muster field goal but in the score at seven to three but on the next possession matt liner threw an interception in Texas. Got The ball back on on their own twenty. This time Vince young wasn't going to settle for a field goal. He wasted no time driving his team. Downfield and only a few plays later they were. USC's twenty-five young couldn't hand it off and risk fumble. He was going to take it himself off. He took a shotgun snap and ran into his left where.

At least thinks is a rising star in the businesses donate terrific job at Iowa State. I don't know if I could see USC hiring him just because of how USC operates Jeff Brom who I think they should probably really consider. He probably will end up at Louisville. We don't know that for sure I mean, there's been reports saying that's the case. I'm not sure that's that's anything like a done deal. But I think he's a guy if you were USC Stu who else would you would you really consider for this job? I think you just name the Matt Cam. On Jeff bronze me or the to homerun guys that might be on that might be up for not saying either of them are desperately looking to get out of where they are by any means, and I do think Bronwyn up at Louisville. In fact, Bronwyn sprays me if he had offers from USC in Louisville. He would still go to Louisville. I mean, this is just a crucial moment for that school in that athletic department. They have to have to have to and the cycle of hiring USC retreats. They've just gotta go hire the best coach. And I don't think it's going to be somebody from the peak Carroll tree or from the oh, this guy coached or played here one hundred years ago tree. So there's a lot of good coaches out there, James Franklin's, the only one that to me. That's like well that that would be a no brainer. And I know that look there are people listening Spock asks you think he's overrated. But I think you would agree. He's a big upgrade over what they have. And he is a big personality who I think would would do well in that market when he was in Nashville Vanderbilt, he was Mr. salesman because he knew he. Had to do that to to you know, Rev up interest in Vanderbilt he's been much more reclusive. I think Penn State, especially with the media because you don't really have to do much to get a hundred thousand people to show up at that stadium. But in L A now, and you know, this well being there. I mean, the Rams are now the team there's no more. These are not the days anymore of well USC is L A's NFL team. The Rams are that team chips got going to get going at UCLA you're going to have to sell that program. So it would make a lot of sense to me one other name. Let me throw this at you. If you were USC, you already screwed this up because you you you're you didn't wait for chip Kelly. The last time probably coulda gotten him. If they waited a couple more months. It would cost them quite a bit to get out of his UCLA deal. You just watch him whip you in a way that you're really going to go there. I'm gonna throw it out. Let's lissi, and you have a lot of money. Would you consider do throwing that money out him eat? That's just throwing the ball move. My friend. I mean chip Kelly had a chance to go to the SEC into Florida and chose. He didn't want be. He did not want to be the the mayor of floor or the the mayor Florida. Thank you, governor of Florida prop popularity. He did not want to be the guy at Tennessee. Who everybody's watching eat every meal, which is what you get. He didn't wanna live in the bubble. If you're the head coach USC, you definitely have more of a bubble quality than you would if you're UCLA, but it's nowhere near like SEC level. Hey, go for it throw million and throw a gazillion dollars adamant and see if he might I mean that would be that'd be something..

"Kid who's always smiling from year to year, just a delightful kid, and what I took from that is as you're watching them run all over USC was this was the chip Kelly where no matter what call the defense is there going to be wrong because he has all these answers into it. And there's some wrinkles that. He's added, you know, from from his time away where his own line. Coach Justin Frye came from Boston College. So you see some different things they do. But they just ran it down US's throat. And you know, this isn't like a great offensive line. They have fifty seven scholarship guys. But you can see this thing starting to turn at UCLA. Whereas on the other side, it was it was just a disaster for USC. I mean, they they couldn't run the ball again. And then at the beginning of the fourth. Quarter. Mogambo song comes on and UC USC USC players like dancing in a frenzy onto the field. And there is like well what's going on here? You know, kind of thing are the are the refs going to flag this. I mean a week earlier. Remember, they flagged one of the leaders of the team Iman Marshall for his behavior towards the sideline at cow, which didn't which kinda cost them or contributed to them losing the game. And right after this kind of display USC gets a procedure penalty on coming back at the start of the fourth quarter. And they just basically were in neutral, or, you know, going backwards from that point on they got out scored thirteen nothing. They just kind of fizzled out, and I had talked to I got a call on Sunday morning from a old USC defensive player. Who is disgusted? He was like you gave up three hundred yards to an F C S back. You can't run the football. And then you show that fake swagger by trying to dance all over the place when you had no juice on the on the sideline before that. He's like, it's embarrassing. What has happened to USC? And the question here is to me this feels like a lot like the latter part of the Larry Coker era at Miami. Nice guy head coach in clay Hilton. Brought some stability certainly the first couple of years where it was needed. But after a while the message gets tuned out, and I don't know what's going to happen with USC. It just seems like they are they have lost their way. The only reason there's any suspense about this. I mean, clearly clearly he's not the coach for USC moving forward. Frankly, people weren't all that confident. And I'm even after the two great years and now he's lost any confidence. But the only so it will be a foregone conclusion, maybe they wouldn't even made the coaching change by now if not for the fact that lends swan continuing a recent US tradition of smart moves by directors gave him this extension earlier this year with a huge buyout. So I don't doubt that Lynn small. On the comments, the he is said publicly, and that you've heard behind the scenes that he really wants to keep him were true. Because it's going to be extreme extremely expensive heat damn reported about fifteen million could be more than that could be also be less than that. This is a private school. It's a private school. We don't know. Exactly. But but you gotta do it. You know, you can't there's no way they'll be able to go into the next season selling fans for crew tes assistant coaches like, you know, they gotta go hire an offense coordinator who's going to come work there knowing that the guys on such thin ice. So I guess the question is, okay. It's easy to say you need to fire the coach it's not so easy to say who you gonna bring in instead and don't give me this Jack del Rio or Jeff Fisher, any more of these USC retrieves this needs to be a legit homerun higher and the one name, and you've thrown it out there and others of throwing it out there that really intrigues me. But I think maybe people on the outside. Thank why on earth. Would he go? There is James Franklin. Well, first of all the finan-..

"New AD at USC with obvious long ties? Where's your confidence in him making a big but not necessarily big but more good decision after three pretty poor various extents USC decisions. Not Lynn Swann decisions. Yeah. We still know enough about Lynn Swann. But if I had to bet on it, I wouldn't the confidence meter wouldn't be very high. USC kind of keep it in the family. You get names like Jack del Rio who played at USC people ask me all the time. Like who should they hire? It's like, you know, I don't have any power. But I would give you two requirements one. Make it a college head coach with great success. You know, someone that's been successful on college. You wanna look at Matt Campbell or whatever someone that's like, hey, they're good college coach. That's the one thing to someone that doesn't know the fights. Don't hire them that you're familiar with like because then you're only basing it on a resume like they just keep hiring people that they know. I mean, just even the directors if you Dan if you covered a game in the call Siham took the elevator up to the press box. You looked on one side of the elevator. There was a picture of Pat Haden. You look the other side of the elevator. There's a picture of Lynn Swann like those. That's they hired like you didn't need a search firm. You just look to see who was on the walls of your press box elevator. And that's what you're gonna hires. Your director you need to get away from that. And I'm not sure that Lynn Swann in the board of trustees and all they would do something like that. It's like they feel like it's a circle the wagons thing, we're going to get a guy that we know as opposed to taking chance I think you said on your preview show where you're comparing Tom Herman toback Campbell. Right. Yeah. Crab. Yeah. And it's like I would love to do something like that where maybe it doesn't work out. But that's someone you can look at it. Like man, they've had some really good success in college. Let's see what it's like if they step up to the next level, and they're playing, you know at a top five or top ten program instead of Iowa State. So I would love to see that. I just don't long answer. I guess I don't confidence that they would do that. What is what do you feel like the view right now of the USC job is externally? I know you might be too close to the situation in LA covering the team every day..

"In a lot of cases, and the evaluation wasn't there is there an element of USC recruiting actually being difficult because there are challenges with it. I mean USC and this is a long with Miami. You look at those top programs that you mentioned whether it's George Alabama, Ohio State. Clemson how many of those programs have a pretty big healthy chunk of their recruiting classes, come to them within a half hour. You know, forty five minutes an hour, and is that necessarily a bad. Thing that players aren't from that exact city. No, I I think it's a great point. I think when you talk about recruiting it's kind of like, you're building a wall, and you need brick and you need more. You don't need everyone to be a five star guy, you need some of those guys that gel and if there's some kid who's a three star that grew up. I mean, maybe grew up close by maybe a little further away. Dreaming about going to USC, and you don't there's a reason to take. Yeah. Maybe there's a guy we have a little bit ranked higher on our board. But this is a good guy to bring into the program. I think Thomas Graham was a guy like that. Who's, you know, you're familiar with Oregon? His sister was going to USC like he wanted to go USC forever with committed. They didn't really recruit them all that hard. And it's like that's a kid that and he's actually good. You know, he's he's starting. I think he started. He started or Cashman. Yeah. Yeah. So so like that like USC would kind of pass on because they was someone else with more stars or something that they were looking at and ever what you just did. It take is like that you need to fill in your class with other people that you just feel comfortable with that. You know, that's what they grew up wanting to do, you know, they're going to help the program. So I think you can kinda get star chasing. But I think Pete Carroll had best where it's more about evaluation than recruiting. Right. There are those stars everyone, you know. But if you don't like a four or five star guy, don't recruit them, you know, and I think sometimes you can chase those stars a lot you get the average star. Rated. It'd be really US's is always like, you know, one or two in the country as the average star guide coming in. But it's to me it's more about the evaluation process because there's gonna be some guys that are overrated. And you know, you can't avoid getting them. All you're gonna get it some of my once in a while. But if you get too many of them, and I think that really hurts recruiting class. So I think you're right evaluation to me is the hardest part. 'cause you you have so many talented players in southern California. You could choose from. You gotta make sure you choose the right ones. Because then you let Thomas Graham kgo. 'cause you you know, what over him and he starting at one of your rivals. And obviously when he comes back to play USC he wants to beat them pretty bad. I also think there is something where you didn't grow up in southern California. Or did, you know Yankee Pennsylvania, and then and Massachusetts where I went to high school, right? But then you went to USC, right? I did. Yes. I moved out. Yeah. And now like you live in you live in the south bay. You are a southern California person through and through which I think is important. I think there is something. About college where you challenge you. You challenge yourself you push yourself. There's something about inserting yourself into a new culture that helps to grow you. And I don't think that's all that different with college football. And that's why I mentioned like Clemson has of Georgia kids and Alabama has kids from Texas and Maryland and Indiana in California, whatever that I think there's something about people coming from different backgrounds, and when USC and USC has had a ton of success stories with with high school kids from L A, you know, whether it's the Sarah kids with Robert woods and marquees think juju went to Long Beach, poly. I wanna say you look at the bedrock a different position groups for USC over the years. Whether it's peak Caroline, kiffin Sark, whoever..

"If he doesn't do. Well. L, and I feel like clay Helton went the other way. He brought in familiar people that no one was really threatening to to take his job. There wasn't. There's not really a head coach on the staff outside of of clay Hilton. So they don't have that those kind of generals that you would want to go to war with they're all kind of lower level guys. And you're in a lot of guys doing jobs for the very first time. If you're a first time head coach you don't wanna hire a first time offense coordinator. And that's what did what t- Martin. He brought in. He promoted, you know, from the support staff Brian Ellis who's the now the quarterback coach knowing that he has no quarterback. He's not never been a permanent quarterback coach for college program. And you knew you're going to have, you know, whoever your quarterback is going to start for the very first time. So all of that stuff is like you're wondering why like yeah, you familiar with these people, but they haven't done the job before. And I think if you're a young head coach who hasn't been around the block a lot you'd want to bring more experienced people and. The one higher. He made that I liked was dealing McCullough the running back coach last year and he helped Ronald Jones have a fifteen hundred yards season. He was he was Indiana. And you look at a lot of people ask like will coaches really wanna come to USC. Well, I talked to deal McCullough quite a bit. He developed running backs from Indiana, put them in the NFL he recruited in SEC country trying to convince guys did not go to LSU or not go to Auburn. And he got somebody didn't get other ones that he would tell me like after their careers. They would come to me and say, you know, I wish I would've came to see you. It's hard to get guys to go to Indiana. He said once he came to USC, it's more about picking which one you want than I gotta convince them guy to to come to USC. They wanna do that. So he he saw the advantages that you have of just being a USC and he came in. And did a lot of great things changed a lot. Now. He ended up leaving go into the Kansas City Chiefs right after a year, and we didn't see that sort of higher. That was a very successful higher. Even only stayed for a year. I didn't see Clayton kind of do that. Again, it was more a one off thing. So for me it's about getting out of your comfort zone when you're hiring people get the people that have done this job before somewhere else. They don't know the fights on. They don't know anything about USA. They've heard of it. That's it and bring them into do their job. And I think if clown gets another chance, and he can go out and redo the staff that way, I can be successful. But the way he's hired the staff down. I just don't think it was really set up for success. So this is going to sound crazy. And most of my theories about USC generally are. But I think there is there's a little bit of meat on this phone, so the conventional wisdom with USC is the premier program in the Pac twelve I think, that's correct. I think that's you know, I I think that's irrefutable. At this point, just because the pack twelve sort of goes as USC goes, sometimes Oregon when you have that flash. When you had Carol you had flash when you had chip Kelly. You had flash at the top of the conference it made a difference. But the conventional wisdom with USC is you're in LA, you can just walk out your. Door and choose whatever five star, whatever four star you want. I don't think that's not true. But I think there is something misleading about or I don't know if it's misleading, but we look at the stories about Larry Coker at Miami. Where he just you could walk out the door and Miami, and he sort of star chased he went on like rivals dot com, and he just put together these amazing classes, but when you actually look at the physical makeup of these classes, it didn't make sense.

"You're listening to two of them right now. I've heard Chris Fowler. Yeah. He would do that -absolutely. So here's obviously here talking USC. If you're listening to the show, there's a good chance you either already listen to Ryan's show. Maybe listen to our show, you're probably from southern California or went to USC, by the way. If that's the case, I hope you and your loved ones survived the fires and everything is that like that is and and safe in your life. My parents barely barely escaped which I'm very very grateful. I mean, they will find but their house barely barely escaped. So always a scary moment. So hope everybody's all right here is on a much less serious note. USC football colon. What happened? Yeah. That's a great. It's a great question. And there's it's funny. You do do different radio shows and depends who you're talking to some people are like, oh, yeah. They're going to get rid of health. Right. This isn't the right direction and other people are like, well, he went to the Rose Bowl. They won the championship last year. You gotta give them some time. It's still pretty mixed. I think in the media as far as the US fan base goes down. It's not mixed at all when you get a consensus like on our message boards that never happens. There's always fighting right now, the only fighting is I knew before you did that Clinton was not going to be a good coach. So when it's a consensus on the fan side. It's probably not a good sign to be fair. I think the when you talk to people inside the program, you get that you get the hey, man, he won the Rose Bowl. And they they did great things last year winning the Pac twelve for the first time in ten years. And you know, you're gonna have your at a freshman quarterback. You're gonna get all that kind of stuff. But I think if you just. Just you consume a lot of college football. Dan, people that watched the fans there watch they see the important games in how USA looks. It's there's a lot of advantages to being USC on the west coast. You get tons of five star recruits. You just by being the clay Helton being a decent. Coach you're going to get some good things and you can start off one in three and win the Rose Bowl. I don't think you can do that a lot of places, but you can get the right quarterback Sam darnold and you make a run, and you can do those kind of things so but the fan see what's going on. And you know, scoring three points on the road against dampered having fourteen the three leads against Texas and giving thirty four on answered and you know, this past weekend against Cal. You have lost of them since two thousand three they're not passing the eyeball test. So I do feel like clouds one of the nicest men that you ever want to meet. But I think there's a lot of shortcomings as far as the coaching staff goes some people argue with me, they don't have great players. We do. Like a composite index on twenty four seven sports where you look at the current roster, and where they were ranked come out of high school. I know it's not exact science, but you look at the top four programs US's number four on that index. The three teams above them are Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State. Those are all really good. The outlier is USC. That is a really good. So yeah, you can say recruiting rankings. Don't mean everything. But it's a pretty good indication of the top three teams in the country. And why is the nowhere? Not. They're not like number ten or fifteen nowhere near that. So to me, Dan long. Now, this is this is the show for it. It's really for me. It's more about the coaching side of the development side. Then the talent that they have on the team right now. So what is when you look at this season specifically, which obviously the conversation at USC is a bigger picture than just any one season. But when you look at this season, what is plain old dumb unlucky nece and what whereas their legitimate concern that. Was avoidable concern unforced errors if you will a good one for unlucky nece? I feel like I mean a lot of the unluckiest though, I think you bring on yourself like you could say it was unlucky against Cal. That US had a snap..

"Yeah. That's the impression. I got the news happen and t- Martin is a year or two older than me. But I remember watching him win the national championship with the Tennessee volunteers and used to be always joke that you can't spell. Citrus Bowl without the UT because Peyton Manning was going there. And he won't be Florida Florida, and they would always go Citrus Bowl t Martin shows up and in the nineties. You didn't see many African American quarterbacks and the store you wrote how he wasn't recruited as a quarterback. He goes at Tennessee with the opportunity. He's now coach see many African American office coordinators and his son Kayden who's a fourteen year old quarterback Redondo high the meat after a game. And the sun comes up to tea and says, are you okay? Knowing that the data under pressure, and I'm reading as a father my son's a year younger than his in. I can't even imagine the pressure going on that then. No that your dad people saying he should be fired. Then you're playing football on your own. Pretty sure there's somebody that sacked the kid that day was your dad's sucks or this or your dad's than that. Like the story. You wrote one thing that throws four interceptions. Exactly, the kid seems like he's very mature young man t the Cobra here after you've been a black quarterback in the F. E C is really not anything people could say to me that. I haven't heard before what kind of person is t- Martin. And it just seems like he has the tunnel vision of I'm going to get through everything. That's exactly right and their stuff that I wasn't able to get into because you know, we work at a daily newspaper. You'll have so much space to lax, but he grew up in that traditional kind of sports tough background, you know, in mobile, Alabama raised by his great grandmother didn't have much didn't come for much really through some mentors. And in coaches was able to rise and become a really good player. He's basically what I was shocked by every week this year. This is my first year covering him, you know, but he'd come out, and he would talk every single week with grace and humility and take all the questions from those fan websites that want answers, you know, I want answers they really want answers about this offense, and what's going on because their peak into the people that are limited dying with it. And they feel it and t takes the questions every time, and you could just tell this is a guy with immense confidence, and it just sort of radiates from him. He didn't get defensive. He just sat there and took all the questions week after week. And that to me was just really impressive. It says a lot about him as a man, I did get some emails after people reading my story that I think people seeing the big picture of, you know, they're pretty happy guy like t Martin is at USC coaching some of their players because at the end of the day, these kids come to USC, and it's these coaches jobs shirt to win games. But they also have an ability. To really impact these kids at appear where everybody changes when their college. What's their life going to be like, what are they learning about themselves t Martin is the type of guy you trust to do that. Now has he had the coaching pedigree that some people would want to say, oh, this guy's deserving of being the office of coordinator USC, maybe not. But is he pointed out you could argue with the results year ago. Sam darnold thirty four thousand yards. Ronald Jones runs for fifteen hundred. They won the Pac twelve oh. Now, he's not calling plays anymore. A few years ago t mar was that hotshot, oh, he's going to be a head coach tune. He's on the fast track. They say life comes that you fast. Yeah. He's got to start over a little bit. Now in Tennessee job came open last year. He didn't get the kind of interest that he would have thought it all mater when his former head coach Phil Fulmer may the one making that call when they botched the whole thing and former jumps in you think that one of the first calls, it'd be t Martin and it wasn't. So I mean, he's taken some hits here and some some hits the Chen and people leave that story feeling as a this is a guy who can handle it be also got bigger things going on his life..

I played the NFL guess what they ain't giving out money for free. You know, you got to earn that type of payday. He hasn't certainly. But also, don't even take your word. Don't take my word to Sean Jackson came out and sit I want you play with Ryan Fitzpatrick. And then someone tapped him on the shoulder PR and said BP and retract that. And so he tried to do the PC thing and say, yeah. Whoever's under center is going to be our leader..

"Whole new level make which to Pennzoil synthetics today we've been bouncing back and forth getting a little bit of the hype over what what the NFL weekend looks like. Obviously, but also talking about the college football weekend as it stands. And earlier we talked about a couple of games. We were really excited for. There's one game that a lot of people are talking about that I want to get your thoughts on field because it's getting a ton of conversation and it is. Number twenty two USC at Texas. So this this game feels like it's it's exciting, right? Let me bring you back to two thousand and five. I believe it was maybe two thousand six young field Yates not yet shaving notably, two thousand eighteen eight still not shaving. But anyways, I digress whatever. I was twelve years old back in two thousand and five, and I'm sitting there watching Vince young architect arguably the greatest performance in college football bowl, history member, watching. I can't think of myself. That's different that special USC Texas. He'll feel the buzz this week. That's this game is one heaping, helping of hot garbage. And you know, yeah, I'll take a look. I think ultimately we have to admit that these programs are not where anybody thought they would be incorrect. It was a bold decision for USC to star JT Daniels threatening you. They decided to start a true freshman, and that is not something that that you can take lightly. Obviously, there's a learning curve. They are the twenty second ranked team in the country, and people wanna make a big deal about having a ranked portion of this, but really what I look at it. I see USC team that we don't really know much about, and I see a Texas team that is in complete turmoil. And that's the part of this. I think we have to acknowledge Tom Herman was supposed to come in and fix this and Texas fan base that was not particularly patient with Charlie strong expected, Tom Herman to come in and have Texas playing relevant football quickly. They are not playing relevant football and I said it after the loss to Maryland, the lost Maryland is inexcusable for Texas football program. The lost Maryland is a reminder that both Texas and Tom Harmon as they stand right now are overrated. And this game is not going to change my opinion. This is somewhat, I think, sort of common sense. But when it comes to teams, we evaluate stories are team other on a big picture or a little picture. And for these college football programs, these notable ones you want to be evaluated on the little picture. What I mean by that is this like you want to be talking this week about Tom. Herman and the two one, oh, Texas, longhorns facing one of their most spirited rivals in USC who's also to know and a gain that could have, you know, college football, playoff consequences. Right, right. All right. That's not the case, right? Texas is what one one now and USC. Obviously one in one as well after a more difficult loss. Right Stanford's. No joke beating them seventeen to three last week. Not much from the offense in USC, but still my point is this. You don't want to be talking about big picture right now for these programs. You want to be talking about more narrowed focus. How can they do the things you need to do to win this game on Saturday afternoon. And right now we're talking about the big picture of Texas, right? That's where we're at. People are already starting to say like what? If Texas spirals and goes five in seven this year or something like that? What does it mean for the program at large has Texas lost. It's Mojo. We recently saw that now Texas am generating more revenue this, Tom, Herman needs to be assessed as the coach of Texas..

"Were students at usc and so we fought a lawsuit yesterday on behalf of one of those students i might add i represent a number of others as well and i have new numerous calls that we're receiving from other usc students so we're going to be filing other lawsuits as well on behalf of these young women they were victimized but we five one yesterday and we called also on usc to conduct an independent investigation of these very serious allegations made by the students who alleged that for many years usc new of the inappropriate conduct by dr ten doll but failed to take appropriate measures to protect the innocent students who were under his care so the lawsuits that we did file yesterday against usc and the doctor is all be half of a young woman named danielle she was given an appointment to see him because her regular gynecologist at usc was not available and the purpose of her appointment was to discuss medication and also to get a basically a standard sexually transmitted disease test scrape so she at the press conference did provide details of the sexual harassment and also the remarks that were made to her which contain many stereotypes about women who are filipina but the bottom line is she described conduct that was inappropriate harmful and offensive to her in which she alleges that dr tyndall conducted the td exam of her vaginal area which definitely left her feeling very confused and violated she alleges that he put two fingers in her that did not have blood he did not have blood on the crazy for this sat test and that he had it also criticized or prior gynecologist and the way she had conducted the tests and let me just share the way her previous gynecologist had conducted the test was to allow her to go into a private area and gave her swab and then she swabbed herself and then brought it out and you know and presented it to the guy to colleges whereas this one this doctor is like you know she alleges just put his fingers in her and and and and she had to be semi naked in order to do that in front of him and that's you know of course she doesn't know she thought he was older and more experienced and maybe he knew the correct way to do.
