Notable Developments on the College Basketball Coaching Carousel Scuttlebutt

"A lot of movement on the coaching carousel. Over the past couple of days the big. One of course was indiana firing archie miller. After four seasons. We talked about that on a previous podcast. So go find it. We're not going to spend any time on that here but let me walk you through the other notable developments richard patino out at minnesota and as up tuesday morning. He's the new coach at new mexico. State has quote parted ways with steve. Prohm depaul finally took. Dave laid off the hot seat list. Boston college hired earl. Grant penn state hired mike castrucci berry dead leg spin a pretty good right now. It's spinning man. Yeah listen we give the. We are gearing up for this tournament. We got we got more than forty eight hours till. We're gonna tip the first game here so as expected. We've had some movement on the carousel. So we'll let's get into a little bit of this This scuttle but here kind of take it job by job. Best job openings indiana. Let's kind of go in order. I guess second best job. That's open. I would say iowa state is a better job than minnesota steve. Prohm gets fired late monday night. His jamie pollard was on the selection committee so he traveled back as he should have to meet with promo person and do what he what needed to be done You and i both seven the podcast in january. We expected steve prone to return next season. But we also didn't expect iowa state to never win a game like he just got to an irreversible point. so he's done. He put out a classy statement on tuesday morning. And i don't know whether or not steve prohm will land somewhere else head. Coaching position this coaching cycle but he will be a head coach again. He did take iowa state to three inch tournaments he was really good prior to that at murray state and certainly qualified for. It's just a matter of Is there anything out there. That he would be offered or anything out there that he would want as for the job. The candidates we're early. But i'm told that this is certainly a coach that you know quite well as well i'm told jamie pollard definitely will be considering. Unlv head coach. Tj burger near the top of his list. I can't say that he is the favorite. I just think that it's objectively true. That tj also burger will be under consideration for the iowa state job along the likes of. You're going to hear puerto moser connected to multiple jobs on this podcast because let's face it especially if he wins at least one tournament game. He's just a hot name. And he's going to be attached to iowa st paul minnesota. I i don't know if you'd be a favorite for state. But i think his name makes sense. I think utah. State's craig smith might make sense and then a high. I do have a wildcard one. Uab's andy kennedy has gone to the sec. Good job at ole miss. He's just one year and at uab but he had he had a really good year. In fact i think he won more games in his first season. This past season than just about anyone. Maybe all of all of the first year coach coaches. So i think that's a fact no first year coach at a new program. One more games this season than ak i. It's just i'm lobbying out. There is a name that should be considered. And then i did see fran for shila tweet this and i do. I do think there's something to it. Like a baylor is a one seed could be in the final four. Hey first time since bill henderson all that good stuff tang is a is a high level power conference assistant that is deserving of an opportunity would come at a power conference level. I don't know. But i think it's only a matter of time before jerome tank. Its job as well. So i'm just tossing him in knows the league as potentially someone that They should consider or at least at the very least interview sets an initial pool of

Biden To Allow Some Separated Migrant Families To Reunite

"A new bite administration policy to allow Children who remain in the U. S s custody after being separated from their parents of the border to reunite with their parents in the United States or in their country of origin. Suzanne Potter reports. Under President Donald Trump. Parents were deported without their Children and hundreds of kids remain in U. S care. Debra Weinstein, with the coalition on Human needs, says the separations harmed Children and amounted to a shocking moral failure. What the Trump administration did enforcing Children and families apart was unspeakably cool, and it was contrary to our moral code into the rule of law. The Biden administration is taking unnecessary and inhumane step. Weinstein says the government should consider restitution and look at giving the family's a pathway to citizenship. It is unclear if families that already have been reunited abroad will be allowed to come to the US while they pursue their claims of asylum. Opponents of the change say it will encourage a new surge of asylum seekers at the border, says CIA. Alvarado is Nevada state director for the nonprofit Mi Familia. Time, she says. This is an important win for the immigrant community. I'm a mother and a month on immigrant. Just the thought of it to be separated from my daughter. It's terrifying. I think they deserve to have an opportunity to be here to heal to receive treatment for the traumas to be hurt. The Department of Homeland Security is expected to release more details of the policy in the coming weeks. The UNLV immigration clinic recently helped a family regained custody of a child. The Cost Of Raising A Star High School QB

"So antonio for people who don't follow college football super closely. Who is dorrie and thompson robinson is. Ucla's starting quarterback right now dopson robinson with the at dow field by called entity. Stay off. yes. He did touchdown. Ucla he's a guy's guy who can run you can throw. And he doesn't really well touchdown. Tops of robinson falling backwards felt like probably ninety yards away. He's very outgoing and like he's very aware to coast kelly just us. You know we tell you wanna know at a time and one game at a time. So that's what you're seeing right now. His numbers of improved. His completion percentage improved each year. And this year i thought he was really really good. This is about to be an all time. High waist can swim urge. You know just both on the ground with his arm and tony. You recently have long conversation with during his mother about the families football journey to get a sense of what it takes to raise a blue chip quarterback these days so first of all tell us a little bit about during mother mel the thompson robinson. She's a professor at unlv. And i know. She took a very big role in raising doreen and helping them go to this journey. She separated with his father. She's kind of the one who is doing most of the heavy lifting. He has a sister as well such as the family who seems very self aware all right so when did the families. Football journey begin. When during i start playing football obviously playing when he was very young and playing pop warner r. e. and then because we live in las vegas the we have you know good weather year round know the fall and spring in tournaments in the summer. So you know. Football is almost year round this prisoner. Sophomore year he played some receiver than towards his judy. That's when he was solely focusing on quarterback. There's not a lot of available quarterback trainers in las vegas so he had to travel the phoenix to some work. Done glow to seem as quarterback coach very often. Because of the like once a year he actually worked with in person. One year never wait. There's more virtual learning which is kind of unique before the pandemic so his mom would watch him throw passes and she tried to use what she learned from the quarterback coach to kind of teach dory and what to do via video know with uploaded to kogo. Dr been shared with his coach. And then they would you know talk about it or you know. They would go through his game film or other film and just talk about like. What are the things that you should be looking at which you should be doing. So i assume that this private quarterback coaching he was getting was fairly pricey. What other expenses was his family taking on as dorian was coming up through high school. Yeah there's that tuition and schools during bishop gorman in las vegas twelve thirteen thousand dollars a year you. We were paying for camp in spirit packs. You know the team travels dollars right there. But then when you're talking about college recruiting camps in the average trip probably costs about sixteen hundred dollars per trip There's a lot of the unofficial visit. It’s the same old story for North Carolina basketball in loss to the Wolfpack

"On sunday. We spent several minutes discussing a disappointing blueblood with the hall of fame coach kentucky led by john calipari today. We'll spend another few minutes on another disappointing blueblood with another hall of fame coach this time it's north carolina and roy williams the tar heels fell at nc state on tuesday. Seventy nine seventy six so now. Five and three. The other losses are texas in iowa best win over stanford ladder you and i both had north carolina projected as the third best team in the acc in the preseason. Are we still confident. Unc is a top three in the acc. No did i really have them third. I looked double checks man. it's not ideal right now. we both had it. We both had it. Virginia duke north carolina in that order. Well i didn't have carrots. So here's where. I differed in the preseason with some of the projections yours and and others. I did not have carolina ranked in the top twenty five portion of my one two three fifty seven. I i put carolina twenty eight. And i remember before like settling on an ultimate order like my first initial like. Let me throw everything at the wall. I think i'd carolina like thirty six or thirty seven and the reason was they were so poor last year. I mean historically bad. It was one of the five or six worst seasons in school history. Statistically that i was just. I wasn't totally sold on them. Going from fourteen and nineteen a season ago to being if your top. Three team in the acc You know that's probably a four seat at worst. And i wasn't all in on him there. I thought okay. Maybe they can get along the lines of a five or six seed and that was really what wound me wind up with me. Booting them up a little bit. But at this point you know. I watched the majority of that. Nc state game. I would argue. It wasn't even a three point game. Nc state truly beat them by six or seven points now five and three losses the losses all respectable so. It's an interesting situation with unc. Here lost texas in a really really good game championship. Which was obviously nashville. Then they lose at iowa but it wasn't that competitive ninety three eighty. Now they take the road loss against nc state. The win against kentucky and cbs sports classic has almost no value. The win over stanford is solid but otherwise charleston. Unlv north carolina central their next game at georgia tech a week from one. We're talking here. On december thirtieth so i think there is still the chance and with all due respect as always to leaky black here. And he's actually. I think he's. He's been good in spots but they're not as good as they should be. I still really love. The frontline is still think. This could be one of the courts in america but it should be noted fourteen thousand nine hundred last season. Now it's five three. And i'm not gonna guarantee you that this team is heading to the instability tournament and in the preseason. Unc got by on its jersey name. I don't know i. I was always a little hesitant there and some of that has come to the surface. This is clearly clearly not a top twenty five team right now. In north carolina as you mentioned the go fourteen and nineteen last season and the reason that i had them in the preseason top twenty five and one thought that they would have a really nice bounceback season because they in elite recruiting class featuring three five star freshman. The way they're supposed to go from fourteen and nineteen to really good is that three five-star freshmen are great. And they're all fine. I guess but none of them are playing like freshman of the year candidates like against nc state day. Ron sharpe had six points. Fourteen minutes walker kessler had three points and twelve minutes. Caleb love had eleven point four assists two turnovers in twenty eight minutes. Like if you're five star freshman aren't gonna perform like five star freshman consistently well. Then you're not going to go from from bad to to really good. You can go from bad to good from bad to respectable from bad to an ncaa tournament team. But you're not going to be elite unless you five star freshman perform at an elite level. They are not doing that right now.

The Road Map To Valorant First Strike

"We had the nerd street gaming first-strike closed qualifiers wrap up. And now today we had the un g unlv first-strike open qualifiers. Start now these are the teams and we'll get to in a moment are either ones. That didn't i mean they could be brand new teams that you've never seen before but they could also be teams that failed to qualify from the last strike. So you're going to see you guys like and box and phase energy things like that. You're going to see familiar teams in this event as well. I think cloud nine or declared non-qualified qualifying. Okay cloudy qualify Just also had upset. But so there's there's all that for you. I strike all of a sudden somewhat confusing for me but nonetheless. Probably the most confusing tournaments setup. I've ever seen in my life. It's really it's so brutal that liquid. Pd doesn't even give you a description in the breakdown of how the tournament is being run first of all you. Gene has been a mess in terms of getting the team. Set up like it's almost like they said they had the number of teams signed up but then they really didn't have everybody signed up and i Cloud nine is the. Um g qualifier so they They didn't go through close for nerd street. So making it to the quarters. Advance you in advance as you too. So cloud nine to not make it to the finals. What will be considered the finals. But they are in like the teams that are qualified for the first strike north american finals. Right which only eight teams will get in the top four from nerd street tournament and the top four for you. Mg okay so it's top for non top. They making matters it. You had to get top four so you have envy one. Hundred thieves renegades who upset cloud nine and sentinels so those are the four teams qualified from nerd street gaming tournament you gene now which will have every team that dinna qualify. Pretty much playing in it. Those top four will then qualify. So you'll have eight teams total into what will actually be called valiant first strike which is the main event will be held december third through the six for america again berbers. Let's wrap up the nerd street. Yes version of using because everyone just keep us included. Because i didn't realize it. Everyone just keeps saying i strike. Oh we're in the first qualifiers. Oh we're in the closed qualifier. No you're in the nerd street first-strike qualifiers like the qualifier number one yes in qualifier number. Two you know so for north st clair's qualifiers with did have that event wrap up. Yeah i'm tim just mentioned the four teams again being renegades. Nb sentinels in hundred thieves. I think Some notable teams than that are obviously going to be fighting for their lives. Here would be. Tsm did not make it through t one whereas also now top four. They were top eight and cloud nine complexity as well. But i think team won t sam in cloud nine kind of more Considered kind of the best of the best type thing in that sense t one little bit more to prove their Than the other two

"So it'll be a little outdated but just yesterday on the college sports quick takes that's Tuesday the 18th. I covered a bunch of new moves happening in Esports degrees both in the UK actually, but tuning universities partnering with twitch and with teen speak to help build out their Esports degree programs. That is 2 people who have been involved in. Esports while being in college but not taking Esports reason Esports degrees doesn't even exist until a few years ago and they're becoming more common Stateside Milo started with you. What's your opinion on e-sports degrees and these dedicated Pathways to get careers in Esports. Do you think they're necessary? Do you think they're helpful or you happy to see them? What's your opinion on so UNLV? I have an Esports. do we do have e Sports classes and I helped design it essentially, but it's it's more entrepreneurial based than Of course that actually promises, you know a job in Esports afterwards. I I think I can confidently say even though my voice and my hesitation doesn't represent that wage is a Esports degrees are useless not because I want to ruin anybody's dream but because as long as someone that has been thrown into the E Sports industry and has basically carved my own Pathway to being in this industry. I oh I took engineering up as my fall back. It was always engineering has always been my fall-back if Esports failed. I just be a sad engineer. That's what you know, that's that's got through. You know, this this whole degree thing so rich. Yeah exactly Sable comfortable not rich, but Esports so the reason why I say that these these These are degree paths are useless is because e Sports is so unique in the sense where we need something or the industry needs something that every other degree provides and the The vast skill set that people can bring in whether they're like history majors or liberal arts Majors or psychology Majors or whatever and arts Majors even all of that applies to e-sports. So my my advice to everyone that would ask me this question is find a fall back because boss a sports is even though e Sports is very open and very welcoming as bear said earlier. It's incredibly hard to get your break through it. And you do need something special about you to even get no way to recognize to work for right and blizzard and that's you know, I'm speaking from someone that's worked for Riot and blizzard and I can tell you right now if you know, you put Esports degree wage resume, it's not going to shine. Well, what will shine well is.

"I want to get tagged. Bi-Lo over to you. Have you seen 8-bit used for its grow? Could you highlight a little bit about the relationship with UNLV and what the modern sports club at a university looks like from your perspective over the last over your college career. So eight bit as a Collegiate Club started back in 2012, and that's when Riot announced their whole you all initiative. So the whole purpose of you know, the club's existence was just because my brother and I we had experience in any sports events like throughout middle school cuz we started running melee events in like sixth grade. So what that looked like in at the beginning like 2012 to I'd like to say 2018 it was All basically like a free-for-all anything anything went UNLV really didn't give us much attention or support for that matter. But even though they were aware that we existed and you know, they they loved using our numbers. They didn't really support us because in the end we didn't really need their support because Esports was just so new and and you know emerging that the mentors that I had in the support that we that we as a club were getting came directly from Riot and blizzard..

The search for ancient civilizations on Earth ... from space

"Okay. So first off Sarah Park is kind of a big deal. She's helped uncover prehistoric commented fossils in eroded canyon lake beds, an ancient amphitheater under an airport in Rome and Egypt, which is her specialty. She's uncovered thousands of settlements including more than a dozen pyramids. Are you tired the perpetually, but it's okay. She's written about those discoveries by the way in a recent book called archaeology from. From Space and yes, Sarah does go to sites and do some real digging in the dirt archaeological excavation. But her superpower is analyzing satellite imagery and data to know where to dig in the first place. Most of the imagery I use is called optical satellite imagery. So so it stayed essentially taken from light that's reflected off the surface and looking for changes in patterns we're looking for. How things relate to one another, and hopefully, that will indicate where there could potentially be archaeological sites or features with insights, and then we get to go out on the ground and do serve mapping and excavate them. When you say you use satellite images, what are we talking about a week? Where do those images come from and kind of how do you manipulate them? So it's a, it's a range of different satellite images. So if we're interested in looking really really large landscapes, we use data from NASA but if we're looking. Looking. At very high resolution satellite images, we use the essentially the imagery that you see on Google Earth, which is from a company called Knox our technologies that challenge with that data is that we can't see through trees. I'm dealing with rainforests, of Central, America or Southeast Asia or forest say in New England. Then we use Technology Coal Ladar which tends for light detection and ranging, and that's Eliezer mapping system that you put on an airplane or a drone or a UNLV essentially allowing you to remove trees and see what's there. In your book, you also explain how archaeologists now have the ability to detect temperature differences below the ground. Why? Yes. How first of all cool second of all, how does that work and why is that important? So one particular part of the light spectrum that is really really useful for for the work that we do is the thermal infrared. So if you have anything that's buried and is a chamber or avoid like a room, a tomb a very passageway, you know if it's kind of. Of like when you go into a basement or a wine cellar, you know the temperature drops a couple of degrees. So by using thermal infrared, you can see these very subtle differences in temperature, and if say an area shows up with a lower temperature, that's the shape of a rectangle. Okay. There's something that's there that we may need to check out right in Salt Lake. You're like cake in archaeologists out of business, right? So it's like you still end up going in there. It just kind of. Of helps like going in there and digging stuff up and looking at stuff with different techniques. It's basically just giving you a good idea of like there might be something here, right ex-. Exactly I mean the coolest part of my job I think is the actual physical excavation and that so time consuming and so what the satellites allow us to do is not just fine sites, but also track over time potential threats to them. So whether it's rising water whether it's urbanization or development, maybe there are. are other issues that could be affecting. The sites would allows it's a tool that allows geologists to help, monitor and protect sites right, and and so you even kind of tried to estimate like obviously estimating how many more archaeological sites might be out there, and it's in like the millions right I. I think I estimated and I'm probably I probably not going to give the right number guy the book even though it was the summer, it was Sarah, fifty, fifty, fifty, fifty, sixty, seventy. Eighty ninety. So. Yeah. So so basically I think something like forty, million, fifty, million sites left to find. But like I could be wrong, it could be one, hundred, million, it could be ten, million North Y'all just yet has written me an angry email saying how dare you? Thank, like I think I was pretty on the mark. So. There's another thing that I kind of wanted to talk to you because I don't talk to that many archaeologists, you know what I mean, but now at my own show and they can't stop me, Sarah. So. Can we talk a little bit about how colonialism and archaeology have intersected in the past and and maybe how it still does now, and what we can do about that? I? Guess that's a big question for you. The big question and it's something I and my colleagues think about. A. Lot. So first of all I, have to acknowledge that that archaeology especially, egyptology. It both those fields as well as anthropology, they have deeply racist colonialist routes. All of them, you know Westerners parachute in. Do their projects were essentially archaeological tourists that were probably rank. rankle a lot of my colleagues I. don't care someone needs to speak out about this and they leave which is, which is appalling. You know I pay guards around at the site where I work at list. I have very close relationships with the village My. My education course staff. I speak to them every single week and and at the end of the day, it's about those relationships. So I think we all have to do a lot of hard stares in the mirror at ourselves and ask what are we taking and what are we leaving? Are we training? Are we providing equipment and materials? What else should we be doing to create some more parody and the in the work that we're doing and I'm not the only one doing this by there's so many colleagues both in Egypt and elsewhere are being which were intentional. But I think we have to ask a lot of hard questions. You talk in the book about the importance of discoveries in how a few small discoveries can impact a field more than like a headline worthy discovery, which I. Really like because I think as a person, who's you know been a part of the scientific process. It's frustrating when you know only the big kind of discoveries. Get credit for changing fields. When in reality, it is those little findings you know what I mean. So I'll get, I'll give you an example a colleague and friend of mine few row him a fee. Fi is currently leading excavations in an area near the Valley of the Kings in Egypt and he and his team just uncovered a new workmen's village. So it's a place where men would have stayed and lived as they were constructing tombs in the Valley of the Kings. and kind of compared to other discoveries, not just in Egypt, but but elsewhere, it really didn't get much play but I think it's one of the most extraordinary discoveries in. Egypt. In the last twenty years, we only know of one other workmen's village in West Bank in Luxor. It's an unbelievable fine because it's going to tell us about the daily life of the people who lived and worked. You know three, thousand, three, hundred, three, thousand, five, hundred years ago, right up and to me, it's those discoveries that are most interesting. All Right Sarah. Park. We appreciate you. This is a lot of fun likewise. Thank you so much. Go go go to bed I I. Learned. They're GONNA pay you. Thanks to Sarah. Park. You can read about her work and her book, which is called archaeology from space, how the

Conversation With Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson

"Delighted to welcome. To our program, a very important guests at this unbelievably strange time from the Mountain West Conference Commissioner Craig Thompson Commissioner thank you very very much for making the time I I, I can only imagine what your schedule is like. These days especially Zoom Bill Assuming there is one good afternoon. Paul good to be with you. You know I hope to mode no more about The next ninety minutes to two hours I have a four o'clock board calling five o'clock standing Monday de call, so we all compare notes and Kinda live by that old adage. God gave us two ears and one off for a reason, right? We're trying to learn from each other. Well we appreciate you making time I'm curious before we get down to some of the obvious questions Since, this occurred you. You've been very obviously active in in the NCAA, basketball tournament, having chaired the the men's basketball committee, and it all started there, and and I know in in your many many years is as commissioner. You've experienced so much but How do you? How do you prepare yourself for something like this? which is literally off the charts. Really is and you know again you don't because. no-one there might have been a few people worldwide They'd be well into their hundreds that were around nineteen eighteen. Spanish flu days, but For the most part, nobody's dealt with any of this Paul. So it's all new, and and it's It's disconcerting. It's hard. It's sad, but it's It's life and it's something we. We have to adjust to and and moved from. In as you get closer to what are really critical decisions, other conferences have made these choices many have not What what do you weigh as you're about to go onto? Another call here how how do you determine these things? Well, it's really got to beat a the safety and the health soccer you I think it's simply going to come down to what is the risk tolerance for for all the various groups just within our FBI subdivision and certainly there's. A rank and file and differences between the autonomous five leaks and a group of five leaks, but You've got you've got. A ton of governors. There's fifty state governors in that up BS group, one hundred thirty board of trustees, regions, one hundred thirty university presidents and Chancellors hundred thirty athletic directors under thirty head, football coaches, and I guarantee it dollar on the same page, and so you know we're. We're just trying to adjust on what makes the most sense for my university and ultimately our conferences. And everyone has a different set of circumstances as you said Commissioner Thompson but. It is late I think you know that we all we all know that. As you are about to go on these calls here in the next hour or two How do you start narrowing the window and coming to? Conclusions! Well we all kind of went into that false pretense and hope that fans should be better in July and August and we had time right back in March. We had four months to figure this out when we've got probably less than four weeks. A couple of weeks a big date coming up on Friday with you know the the six week period starting extended team practices, and then most camps opening somewhat in that August seventh time friend I! I had a good exchange with one of our head. Football coaches today saying you know I don't even know what to do. Because of campus regulations and concerns, we have one institution that's had nearly one hundred football players for little over a month. Now Paul and we have another institution that literally has no football players, conditioning of or working out degree, and so you know we're all over the map based on a local and university, muncipality rules and regulations and. I said this for months gone on standby. One of one of the big concerns and focal points for us is the state of California They just announced today that they're going to delay. The start of their prep season suggested until December or January didn't give an exacting, and they join a couple of states that the prep seasons have been canceled altogether one of our states New Mexico, so just just trying to deal with all the nuances and differences in rules, policies and allowances. As you as you try to deal with with some some issues before that certainly, the non-conference issues a lot of non conference. Games have been scrubbed. I. Has that been a major issue for you or Were you in reasonably good shape. Well it is a big issue, and of course years of all years. This is our twenty seven season A. We had more home games against PAC twelve than any time in our previous 21-year-history, we lost home games. Ucla at both. San Diego State ally. Utah, Colorado Washington state calendars on a state. They were GONNA play at the new two billion dollar NFL stadium in Las Vegas against UNLV so a lot of people like to point to that financial loss of losing the the six road at twelve games and a and a guarantee. Those seven home games from from both of financial interest level, and then ultimately you know television perspective CBS. Fox Aren't real thrilled. You know that we lost those seven home games. Talking to the Commissioner of the Mountain West Craig Thompson discussing all the variables. Commissioner. We. We've talked to so many different commissioners over these past few months, and as you as you so eloquently pointed out a minute ago. Everyone has a different set of circumstances and challenges you maybe more than than most because of the geographical aspect. But how do you think and it shouldn't be that hard to think about it since it's not far off? How how do you ultimately come up with what you would say? Good solution, not only for your member institutions, but for the safety of the athletes. Well again. You not to lean on your medical people and that's one of the. Major aspects of this board call coming up in an hour, so Paul because It's the first time that they in a while. They've heard directly from the the medical advisory group and you know they don't depend on them. You know they. They are the experts, will we? The board are economists and Then different walks of life. They're not medical people, per se, and so you know you really have to lean heavily on what makes sense I. I said four months ago and I I contend today. A lot of this is going to be perhaps probably triggered by what happens on our campuses. What they look like in the next month or so you know everybody's either hybrid mostly online You know there's GonNa. Be Certainly people walking around campus, but you know you. You really can't expect to have a college athletics if you don't have a fairly open in some degree. Campus. Commissioner I, it's no secret Wherever conferences are located and and and spread that football pays the majority of the bills there. There's some outliers of course but What's at stake you just from a revenue standpoint? Well you know. Let's all kinds of figures in I I know that A couple of our department said have lost Well in excess of ten million dollars now, and then could jump into without football alum Paul you know double and triple, and you know those are not insignificant numbers. They're smaller than the world. You live in I lived in Atlanta. For four years. New Orleans for twelve years both children born in New Orleans and well versed in an SEC football, and what it means in a walk of life, and so it's different, no question it's different I live in Colorado and and what it's like in Western states, but but none the less. You, do not escape whatever love your Ad. That football is probably that you know eighty eighty five percent of of an athletic budget, and and so it's so very important, but you know as harmful as painful rather as it is from the financial perspective now that cannot be the driving force won't be the driving force. It will be that the health and safety it'll be university decisions. You know I've always. Always felt. The presidents of universities and chances have an extremely difficult position now more so than ever because they're pushed him pulled in and all these different directions and you know I. Don't know how the decision will. Ultimately made would fall looks like from terms of football. I don't know who makes that decision, but Hopefully they'll be some clobbering collective. Let's let's go right to the College Football playoff. Can you even imagine a world where pick a number? Three conferences can play in the fall and seven up to play in the spring. What happens to see a p.? Is there a CFP? Does that make sense to have a CFP? I guess it might depend on those three conferences are and I use. You know you, you're GONNA have to look at this for for the good of everybody, and and you know the collaboration and collective exchange and we've seen conferences. Do things unilaterally I mean as a commissioner. You Work for twelve schools. You don't work for honored thirty FBI schools, and so you're doing what's right, and what's your membership is is directing and advise you to do, but we do have to get together and get the same page in some regards spor for the sake of the CFD for instance and the bowl system. I know at least I'm told in talking to your colleagues commissioners. We wind down. I know you've got a lot of meetings to that. You are a collaborative group. I mean that's a fact. I mean we see that all the time but it but I wonder though. Because we've already seen some some. Some schisms as we had the big ten, and then everyone else said something else I mean the PAC twelve and the big ten, and do you. Are you concerned about the stability of of what you do every day and try to work with everyone else within the framework of college athletics. I am and I'm not I mean again. We try to work together, but at the end of the day our plan for fourteen or ten members, order media have will dictate. What direction are leagues go and I know the NCAA takes a ton of shots, but the NCAA is membership driven. It's schools that are that are ultimately making decisions and the conferences the exact same way, so you know we can compare but I. I am concerned about The postseason college football, the the CFC's a five hundred million dollar enterprise NCAA. Basketball Championship is a six hundred million dollars in a prize number of conferences of two hundred and fifty to three hundred million dollar annual TV, contracts, and and we can't go ten I don't well. Yeah, anything's possible. You could go ten separate ways I. certainly don't think it's going to be that way at the end of the day. Commissioner will let you get back to your meetings, but thank you for making time. It was just a pleasure to to hear your perspective as someone who is so well respected. And revered in this industry we be well and let's hope for some good news. Stay safe yourself my friend.

The Hey Rep statue stood in front of the Tam Alumni Center in a letter posted on social media Tuesday you UNLV officials were returning the statue to its donor. That's what they've. Let everybody know at this point. At this point. The rebel mascot dates the origin in the mid nineteen fifty s when it wasn't extension of the campus of University of Nevada, but at this point, the confederate theme Mascot will no longer stand is a statute, and it looks like we'll no longer be affiliated with the school. We don't know what that means for what their next nickname will

Is Duke Done? A Season of NCAA Basketball Surprises

"Myron. I think the last time we spoke. I was at Cameron Indoor Stadium asking You what you thought about Zion Williamson. That was the last time and now Zion's gone and things haven't been as good for college basketball since he left. Myron Medcalf is a senior college basketball reporter for ESPN. Men's college basketball has been having a pretty weird season. Can you explain to us sort of the state of things and why some of the usually omnipresent contenders your dukes your? Unc's Kentucky aren't even in the top five while it's a meeting in a year like this anybody who tells you that they know exactly what's going to happen in March. They're lying because there was no one no expert. That understands kind of what's happened so far. It's just been a wild year but I think you can look at some of the things that transpired Really at the start of the season. I think the James Wiseman suspension by the answer. Aa For twelve games after being ruled ineligible. You have a Memphis team that I think had a chance to be much better if he sticks around. Lamelo ball who if he follows the traditional track and goes to a UCLA USC that changes the spotlight on those programs as well But instead you have a lot of the blue blood teams that don't have the lottery level talent that they had a year ago. Duke is still a top ten level team but they don't have anyone close To a Zaylon you'd have a team like Gonzaga that had to lottery picks last year. They got some good players. Nothing like that so the the powerhouse teams are just really good team which has closed the gap so now a San Diego State with the Malachi Flint and against double team Malachi for three huge three by malachite lend. That's a really good team. Competing for number one see the Dayton with an ob top suddenly was one of the best teams in America. And I think it's because you just don't have the same concentration of talent we're accustomed to seeing with your Kentucky's in Dukes. Then you'RE K. Use Marin what is it like covering a season like this where there are really clear favorites and no one seems to have any idea. What's going on this year? You just don't really know who to chase like. You don't know who to say okay. That's the team to watch. Because they're really good. It just feels like a pretty fragile college basketball scene which is great for the tournament for everything. We didn't have in college basketball this year in terms of no established kind of powerhouse team. I think we're going to see the benefits of it. Come into double A. Tournament. Time when we could have one of the craziest craziest. March madness is we've ever had so. Let's talk about Duke. Quit even when dukes not great? We're still going to talk about Dick. Because it's really interesting. Myron how much struggled on Saturday they lost to Virginia Virginia wins. That look the three point line. Just couldn't connect before that game. They were ranked seventh. But I imagine they could go down even further now right. Yeah I mean this is a team that I think will will fall in the rankings. Duke has run into some teams who put on their Superman capes in the last couple of games. And that's change things you have. Nc State which made sixty one percent of its threes and that loss A week ago wake forest mixed fifty four percent of its threes. These things those teams had done before they phase Duke and Virginia really as just a team on the rise So I think duke got caught in kind of a weird gauntlet there but trae Jones has been sort of their closer whereas a year ago you could go to RJ bear. You could go to Cam Reddish you could go on. And now they're a bit more one dimensional They're much closer to what you see. Maybe in a typical season where they're right there with Louisville and Florida state and Virginia and the other teams at the top of the ACC. But they don't have a guy who's GonNa carry them to the top of the League and just help them separate. That's just not enough talent in college basketball for really any team to do that. But especially in the league like the Agency. So you're in Kansas right now in Kansas. The number one team. You were there to watch them. Play Kansas State and it was a right because these two teams Fighting literally fighting back in January Shit and now the benches inc just unnecessary. That's not good. This is Paul. This is bad this is but on Saturday night myron. They shook hands before the tip off in. Kansas came away with the victory. What did you make of the number team in their performance? Well I I'm just glad nobody fought again because that that would have been bad Glad to have that moment before the game I will say. I've never been to a regular basketball game outside of the NCAA tournament that had as much security as that game. Had I mean they were everywhere about? I'm glad there was an incident. I I think Kansas is sort of the perfect team in a year like this. Do they have a lottery pick? No but they've got this really balanced group of guys who are pretty good offensively. They've been pretty efficient team and they got two guys who win they're together. They're hard to stop. It's Dotson In Gaza Buki who when they're on the floor together. Kansas made about sixty percent of his shots inside the art. Their opponents have made about forty one percent of their shots inside the three point line. That's the story right there when those two guys are together. Kansas is certainly the best team in America. But you also look at them and go. Are they one bad night from Abu? Koa from struggling. He was hurt part of the game on Saturday against the bad Kansas state team boss feeds it in bounced past as a group. Six to shoot you back down spits travels this is the shot ultimately but he rolled his ankle. Oh this is good has approved. He is clutching his right foot so Kansas is good. But like a lot of teams there. One bad moment badge stretch away from being right there with everybody else. Well now. It seems like Kansas is going to run away with the big twelve after Baylor who was ranked number two going into the weekend got upset by. Tcu How bad was this for Baylor? It's always interesting right. Like Baylor won every game but one for like two months straight and now all of a sudden last week I think a lot of people are panicking and that happens to a team. Like Baylor which doesn't have the brand recognition of Duke or Kentucky or a Kansas. So in hard times. I think we may be overemphasized Some of their struggles. I think you obviously don't want to continue losing and losing to a team like Tcu is not good For them but this is a team that again played a tissue team that did things that they haven't done in the past made forty five percent of the threes on Saturday against Baylor. They made thirty three percent of their shots from three point. Line before that so that can be more of an anomaly. I think Baylor overall though is one of the best defensive teams in America made the best defensive team not named Kansas. So that's GONNA keep them in every game that they play well one team. That's right up there with Kansas and Baylor is Gonzaga perennial contenders They did lose to. Byu about a week ago but they're still considered favorites to win the WCTC. How good is this Gonzaga team? I think they're really really good me now like I think they're amazing. I just think this is a year where because everyone has been sort of even you get one loss and all of a sudden. Gonzaga gets the whole. You haven't played anybody. And why are you losing you know in the West Coast Conference and I think that's unfair? Byu was a really good team like Byu's go into selection Sunday with maybe a five or six seed. Maybe even better so. There's nothing wrong with losing a road game in that environment to a good team. They have the number one offense in America a flea Petra. Sav is one of the best young players Indian tire country. We would know what mark few the head coach can do. And they've got two losses all year. I think that is one of the best teams in America and I think will prove it wants double a. Tournament starts so most of the rankings have some combination of Kansas Baylor in Gonzaga in the top. Three we'll see how this weekend changes that but after that myron gets pretty interesting. I'm you've got Dayton San Diego state. Did you see that coming up before the season began out like I wish I could lie and say I did? I wish I could be that dude. It was like yeah. I called San Diego State back in October in Dayton. But I didn't I mean like ob top and a Dayton is suddenly this lottery pig. And I don't think anybody saw that Common Dayton on Friday against Davidson Mia. Think about this number. They may ninety six percent of their shots inside the three point. Line Ninety six percent like I don't care if you're playing a high school junior Varsity Team. That's really difficult to do in Dayton. Did that and not only did they do it. They've been doing it Throughout the season just really inefficient offensive team in San Diego State. A team that lost its first game about a week and a half ago. The they've been role as well in their line of people who will say San Diego State doesn't play the competition that the other top teams have faced in college basketball. That's not true. They beat the. Byu Team that just beacons Aga- they beat Creighton. Which I think is the surprise of college basketball naked win at all by thirty one points and they beat Iowa another solid team another Aa tournament team by ten points so the best teams that were thrown at San Diego State. They won those games now. They did lose the UNLV Week ago but beyond that there have been a really really good team and I think in a year like this again. You're not going to run into a team with two lottery. Picks it feels like they can make Iran as well both San Diego state ending

N. volunteers. UNLV now dreary said in an interview with you a news ahead of International Volunteer Day. She knows her way around the UN system having previously served with UN women and the UN Development Program UNDP in Iraq Yemen. Another hot spots seeing first hand. The difference volunteering can make moves dreary began by telling Lewis Kathy. What the U. N.. Volunteers program is all about the U. N. V. Program is the UN organization that promotes volunteerism to support peace and development worldwide. You envy is one of the first common services of UN system every year about more than six thousand five hundred volunteers including about tousands. Volunteers contributes to the effective delivery of the peace and development interventions of the United Nations system. Actually this year in November we have reached a number of eight thousand U. N. volunteers who are serving worldwide the United Nations system. Many people think the U. N.. Volunteers are mainly youth. Is that true. Not that's all actually the average Asia. Few and volunteers is thirty five years old. The total number lot of the youth volunteers yearly is about a thousand out of six thousand. Five hundred or seven thousand for instance. I can give you the figure for two thousand eighteen. We had only twenty five percent of the volunteers were under Asia to one thousand nine and two you need to speak languages to be a UN volunteer or it's Sir great asset to have the languages the more you on languages. Have you have the more possibilities of serving the UN system all over the world so definitely. English is a master. And then you. If you're going to be serving in Africa in Francophone Africa. Then you need the French. If you're going to be in Latin America then yes Spanish so yes languages rate asset to have. What kind of activities do you want. Volunteers do all kinds of activities. We are partnering with more than forty entities all over the world and it's more than a hundred profiles and fields that the UN volunteers are serving actually worldwide involved peace and in development and when you join to be a UN volunteer. "unlv" Discussed on Only A Game

"People were injured nearly half from gunfire or shrapnel. The shootings occurred less than a week before the Las Vegas Golden Knights were we're to begin their inaugural season in the NHL and in some ways what happened next was a story of recovery community and hockey key reporter. Susan valid has our story and just a note before we get started. This piece is going to contain descriptions of what it was like to be in the crowd out during the shootings as well as audio taken from youtube videos and law enforcement recordings listener discretion is most definitely advised. Sometimes you can find community in the least likely of places I had been here ten years and I had a pretty good grasp of Vegas but even I underestimated and how much togetherness and how much community there was here. That's Jesse Grainger who covers vegas hockey for the sports news website the athletic he was also among the first reporters on the scene of the harvest festival shooting. Everyone outside of Vegas use it as the Strip and hotels and clubs and all the end pools who's like I feel like I didn't even give the city enough credit and after that it completely changed the way I viewed Vegas now for many in Vegas the events of that day and the weeks and months after change the way they looked at a sport hockey twenty-seven-year-old Anthony Rabbani grew up with the sport his his dad brought his love of the game with him from La.. He's always been a big kings fan. So we grew up special. He started playing hockey grope watching the Kings play all-time Luc Robitaille by all those guys are neighborhood was half the hockey community at the time. I felt like because a lot of the kids that grow up in our little area are the ones who all went start playing at the same time but he goes school and tell people played played hockey and they'd be kind of give you a weird look. Anthony's older brother Nick went to UNLV and played for the rebels roller hockey team Anthony joined him for the two thousand eleven two thousand twelve season even play for UNLV for a long time people like Oh. We have a hockey team. We've got a team like pretty decent. A few years later nick signed on as as a coach for UNLV's men's ice hockey team hockey was growing in Vegas in June of two thousand sixteen. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced that the Las Vegas Golden Knights were coming to town of course. I hockey fans booed him. Not I'll keep the going. That proves you're now in. Nhl City Nhl had arrived for the Vegas hockey community. The excitement was Christmas morning but while the Golden Knights were preparing to play their first regular season Game Las Vegas was hosting the Route Ninety one harvest music festival a three day party featuring country artists in an open field at the south end of the Vegas Strip. Nick and Anthony and some of of their childhood hockey friends decided to attend on Sunday the final night of the festival so I went and played a men's league game on Sunday like I always do and then afterwards. I actually zip down there as fast as I could. Anthony took the day off from his job as a paramedic but he also had plans for before the concert. Actually I'd actually skipped our Sunday night. League game that night to go to the Golden Knights preseason game against the sharks so he went and played in our hockey game. I went to the gold night's game. The plan was to meet up around eight thirty nine o'clock to catch to actually concert together. I was just lucky that we actually got to meet up because there's no real good cell service there and we were just kind of trying to figure out wherever woman was at by the time we all got together as the end of Jayco and set that is kind of like towards the end of the concert obviously Jay Cohen was second last to perform and Jason Aldean was the last and final one. You just hear like too loud like bangs. It was like one to kind of stopped and then you hear like a consistent garage. You would essentially gunfire at the time you're never thinking like okay. I'm getting shot at a concert and you know we definitely shotguns in our lives plenty of times but I think it's different when you're hearing it from that from how far that is so. You're still not really sure what it is. Maybe it's a blown speaker something you you couch down. Everybody's crouching down and then the music stops and you're like okay something's up and then it stopped first second and all of a sudden it goes again and probably the second time around when he goes again. You know I feel like somebody just smashes me in the chest with a sledgehammer I crouch down and still not thinking I was shot with a bullet but then blood started coming out of my nose and my mouth then I looked down you know the whole my chest and my brothers there thank God and my buddy our buddy billy also a paramedic. I heard someone say I got hit and I look over my right shoulder and I see my brother spitting up blood and it Kinda you know turned it into like okay. We're getting shot at and my brother's been shot and we've got to get the hell a Lotta here you know they both grabbed me and you know we just start running. Just like everybody else starts running and then it's just chaos one hand around my brother one hand around billy and we know we're we're running as fast as I can go which isn't too fast and so we started heading east out of the concert venue at that point. I was like Oh crap Danielle. That's what Anthony Girlfriend who was with them at the concert and I looked up and luckily she was they were running right in front of us now. So I told our friend Emanuel who's is in the army and I trusted him with her life and she came in and you gotta take her go that way. Go to the zinc. Get Out. Shall we ran outside. The East Gate of the concert venue. We saw were nick was shot at that point. He didn't have an exit wound. You just kind of had an entrance right here of his left pack right in the spot where Yulong would be at so that Kinda got me nervous with his breathing and and the blood coming out so immediately Carolinians go hospital. It's the only thing that's going to save him. Then we get to a cop car and we kinda place nick down behind the curtain on the COP said Hey man we gotta get my brother hospital right now. It's been shot and he's like I can't do that. You know I mean he's hunkered down hunters car. Today are out cops are they're just as Kinda. Shell shocked as everyone. They're just telling people to run in and get out. Go this way or that way. They're kind of realize okay. We're on our own for this one billion and we're GONNA steal this cop car so we started richland door handle and of course locked and then a few yards down the way another cop was right down there looking at US trying to steal a car so I asked him in a first aid kit he had kind of like Thep Walmart first aid kit with BANDAIDS neils born in it and we take the plastic off of it. They made it. It's called like an inclusive dressing and then we we ran further backwards onto a side street and then that's when you know I was sitting down and we're waiting for ambulance to come loads and loads of people who have been shot got started kind of flood to where we were at and he was shot in the first minute and it went on for about ten to twelve minutes so I mean a lot of people continue to get shot and and at that point when Nick was Kinda stable Billy Kinda was able to sit there and stay with Nick. Keep an eye on nick and I just Kinda started see what other people I can help. Originally my plan is what brothers on the first ambulance that shows up whereas that first Amos coming down the street felt like a lifetime rise that's happening. The Guy who had been shot in the neck and he's we know pretty bad. I was like that guy needs skill in San bills and luckily I saw a couple of ambulances coming behind. That nick got into the second ambulance. I'd even get saved by to him. I mean he was in the back of the ambulance. Those able to peek through that window I saw him back there sitting on the bench seat and I just saw the mechanized said hey where you going said sunrise said is it perfect and I mean that was that was that was all I could do and I just pray that. That wasn't the last time I saw Anthony and billy we stayed behind as first responders helping out at the scene for about an hour and a half at that point where like okay we need to find a way to get to the hospital document. Uber's or or anything around here like how the Hell Arena get back. Anthony and billy made their way to the Tropicana where they were pushed inside as rumors swirled about more shooters control three recent before I got medics reporting that they're getting shot at Tropicana. Anthony Billy were moved into a hallway while police tried to figure out what was going on and Joseph Vice versa shots fired from the topic Hannah Hotel be twenty two. We're at the trump fan. There's no shots fire here. Finally they said Hey. There's someone on the fifth floor. WHO's been shot in the head. We need some people to come up there and help us so I raise my hand right away civilian. Let's go. This is our way out. The guy guys had he'd been shot in the head but it didn't really penetrate the skull or anything it just kinda wrapped around his forehead. He was super lucky but still hospital so we basically helped tim down to the Valet. were an ambulance was that I remember talking to the one. EMT and he said all we're going to go to UNC and I was like. Oh no you're GONNA go sunrise as I can. We're GONNA go with you. The ambulance brought Anthony and billy to the emergency room at sunrise. I got there. They said hey you can't come back here. You can't get back to the emergency. It was fair enough and walked down the waiting room. That's a lot of our family and friends were so I got to give a mom and dad a hug and kiss and then I said well. I'm GonNa go find my brother. Anthony had done some of his training at this hospital so I knew the door Konno's able to kind of sneak into the emergency room. It was like a scene from L. If you've ever seen Pearl Harbor when they have the nurses versus running around when providence being bombed and there's blood everywhere doctors and nurses running everywhere and screaming and it's like that finally anthony found someone who knew where his brother was he was already innovated and he was he was actually not doing very well at that point. I don't think he even knows how critical was but his blood pressure was about seventy over forty which I don't know if you know how low that is that's a pretty bad sign and I remember them kind of rip it in China chest to ban and you know it's got some tousignant. Ignorance is bliss but wasn't ignorant because I work in that field so I kinda Newroz out and it was a little frightening. Anthony went back to the waiting room and sat with his family for three grueling hours. You see families families get caught up and then they go sit back down and get another family. Get called up. The whole family starts to break down crying and it's like all right well. Their loved one passed is they call another any like well. Which one am I going to be but before his family's name was called. Anthony's phone rang it was Knicks Dr Letting Anthony know that his brother was going to be okay. The bullet hadn't pierce snicks lung but doctors had to cut open Knicks ribcage to find the bullet and there was a lot of internal damage nick had been put in a medically induced coma alibaba's in the coma for essentially that night and all the next day because I couldn't breathe on my own so they had that breathing in for like go day and a half and then I woke up the news on October third doctors told Nick that being in good shape in part from playing hockey had helped him survive the shooting. Did you ever look very mixed. Emotions Ocean's 'cause you don't know who's alive. WHO's dead like why it happened what happen and now I'm just seeing like newspaper articles with my face on it and name on it now and I'm. I'm just like kind of like irritated because I just didn't want any of that like I. I just wanted to like figure out what happened and then just be alone for a little bit just to collect my thoughts and everything well nick recovered in the hospital. The Vegas community rallied and the city's brand new. NHL team joined in here's reporter Jesse Grainger again again. I went with the Golden Knights players to Metro headquarters where it was like two days after the shooting and there were officers there that had been working nonstop since the shooting shooting happened and they're exhausted and they've just been dealing with horrifying things for the last two days and it just kind of lightened their day a little bit. These players had reached out to the team and said like what can we do. We'll do anything we possibly can and this is the week before the regular season opener in Dallas. They're preparing for the first game in franchise history and and that was what they were doing that week nick would stream has UNLV games from his hospital room taking notes to give to the team and his buddies came to watch the opening game of the inaugural Golden Knights season. I was actually one. Nothing in the night scored late tie it up really late first goal in the night history is in that room with seven or eight guys that I grew up playing hockey with and you know I've watched tons of games with them in the the pass before and we all cheered on one team scored but this time when the night scored Nick says everyone in the hospital room cheered and I thought that was so strange I should remember vividly looking around and I was like wow they wanted help this city heal and I think they did it that gave so many people to kind of something to cheer four born and it gave them a distraction from the hardships that everybody was still going through as victims were released from the hospital and life began to return to normal nick says the city stayed behind the nights..

"This is the news in brief from the United Nations. So they 'Lance technology should be banned. Immediately until effective, national or international controls put in place, a u n appointed independent rights expert said, on Tuesday, David Kay, who's the United Nations special rapporteur, on freedom of opinion and expression made the appeal as he prepared to present. He said among these special reporters recommendations is an appeal to states to adopt domestic safeguards to protect individuals from UNLV. Awful surveillance in line with international human rights law nearly twenty thousand people have been rescued from the desert in Asia since 2016, after trying to reach North Africa and being abandoned by traffickers. We know that probably thousands of victims. There remains aren't even evident anymore because they're covered by sand or consumed by animals. We can only rely on luck I would say mostly in the ability to get resources. Marshalled sometimes local authorities can be very helpful. Sometimes resources are really stretched. 2019 NCAA championship: Virginia wins its first national title

"Like this. Virginia that seventy five seventy three next to going over time. How big is younger. My goodness. Monsters twenty seven hundred Westwood One. Aa radio network hunter coming up big twenty seven points in the Egypt game. Kyle guy had twenty four Virginia hits all twelve free. Throw attempts in the overtime period. And they come away with the title as you heard eighty five seventy seven in OT. They beat Texas Tech the eighth national title game to go to overtime the first since two thousand eight when Kansas beat Memphis the first national title game between two teams that had never previously appeared in the title game since nineteen seventy nine Magic Johnson's Michigan state team against Larry bird's. Indiana state team Virginia wins this one first title game between schools that had previously never wanted title since nineteen Ninety-one UNLV beat Duke, Tony Bennett becoming the ninth active division one coach to win a national title. I think it was a terrific game to see how these. Guys, played the one thing I said to him before in the locker room. I said you guys faced pressure that no team in the history of the game is faced will really all year. But but being down fourteen against garner web. I said, and you did not panic in that moment, and you fought, and you found a way out I said that I think has prepared you for this moment to the handle the pressure or the the intensity of national championship game. And these guys stepped up to me that was it appeared from Istambul to be a high level game. And you know, we scored eighty five that was in that setting. So good stuff. Hey, coach Bennett. Zach peerless Augusta free press there's a picture in your house. You've talked about before these three guys. Jay huff part of that twenty sixteen class. They've seen a lot of things now and their time at you've yet what are the emotions now attached to that picture? And you know, how does this change that picture in the feelings that you'll see when you see it? Yeah. When they came on the recruiting. Visit remember telling them, look, you're. The foundation has been laid by guys, you know, Joe, and Malcolm are here and all the guys went before. And we had one Sommese championships who've been to be lead eight I said, we're asking to build on that foundation. Even at that house on the hardest step. But if you're willing said, we'll take a chance at mentioned, the rocky post just I said, I want guys wanna chance to title fight and see them come in either as young men or boys and grow into men this season. And I'll mention what happened last year that that can only mature you. I don't know of anything else that would allow these guys to build a handle this situation, the playthrough stuff and to have a perspective and poise and resiliencey unless they went through something that hard, and they're very there's really good players. They don't probably get enough credit. Well, I think someone do their town. But they had something different about them collectively. I just one of our themes. I told them before the Auburn game as just bring your two fish and five loaves. It's a story in the bible. And I said it'll be enough. I said it'll it'll be enough for the masses. I said when you guys play the right way, the collectiveness of it takes over. And I've watched it, and I've stepped back, and I've seen this now seen mature through everything. And for them to do what they did, you know and how they've won. It's a great story really ofensive -ly. It seemed as if the Andre took charge there at the end you telling take charge or sometimes it seems like he's trying not. To take. That's you know, Dan regularly. Let's come in that he he I think he grew up in a way in this tournament in the second half of the Auburn game. And definitely and he was getting his shots. But he just he you saw them and that when he puts that into boy, it's he special, but no he trying to get on the ball ties. So good and our players. They understand. He's like all right. We gotta get him the ball in these situations and go to work, and you know, we did call. I'm not sure what the answer the question. We did. Call an action form to hit that three in the corner. And then one time time to great pass. But he yeah. I thought he really showed an aggressiveness that we needed. You. Need your top players to step up and make plays. And he did it on both ends you just speak to one that the poyser guy showed the overtime. And also the the previous games prepare them for that. They didn't seem either out of gas. They didn't to motion in handling the overtime. No. Well, I tell you we we had. Three Saturday, Monday games. We played Duke at home, and then we had to go to Carolina. And I I think I said this in the podium before. But I said this is how it's going to be in the tournament. And this is how we're going to prepare on Sunday. And and we did that every time we had those games, and we did it in the NCAA tournament that day in between and they knew what to expect. And I said you're built for this. You're prepared for this. Because this is what we did. And we started that process in January and that Carol do Carolina weekend. And I said just get after it, and we worked in between a lot of people's walked, actually, I don't know. What people do I just know from my experiences a coach in the Pac ten home important that day in between and how you prepare well prepare well and get after it. And so I think they they stepped in the moment they face pressure through the year through the turnament and all that stuff played into it. And that a lot goes to our strength coach, Mike Curtis. I mean, he has those guys as finely tuned machines. And and they just they work. We were smart at the end of the year with how much rest we gave them and prepare them. It's just a balance. Obviously, it it hit Tony Bennett with the national championship ninth. Active coach for the title for our current ACC coaches, Mike, shefty, ROY Williams, and Jim boeheim being the others Virginia six team to win. Multiple overtime games of the NC double A tournament in route to winning national title there. The first to do. So since era Zona in nineteen ninety seven. Cavs sixty six and six over the last two seasons. Best win percentage in division. One college basketball live crew restated Seth Greenberg, Jay Williams, and Jay Bilas, the every time in the last three games when things looked grim at the end of the game for junior late made plays. It looked grim at the end of regulation in this one when they were down to and then all of a sudden tied Rome drives, the baseline Texas Tech over helps the Audrey hunter. Who was spectacular? He wasn't good. He was spectacular twenty-seven points nine rebounds that three he hit out of the right corner is the biggest reason that Virginia's able to win the game. That was a spectacular shot. It took advantage of one of the very few defensive mistakes that Texas Tech made throughout the game. And they hung in there, and and grand fashioned to have a chance to win at the end. But Virginia made play after play that end of the overtime. They were great didn't miss a free throw were they were outstanding

"Tournament is allegedly underway. Let us bring a man who will be calling many of the games all the way through the national championship Turner sports analyst and somebody we watched play in high school. You're even old now south lakes high school. Let's start with this. I ask you as an analyst Dookie when you watch Zay on. What do you see? Wow. See explosiveness? I see, you know, see almost like a combination of a linebacker who jumps like Vince Carter. Is really nothing we've ever seen before in terms of his explosiveness athleticism. But also how hard he plays and steals activity has energy just off the charts. We're so used to comparing people you really can't compare them because there's really been nobody quite like him. That's how unique Zion. Williamson is all right grant beyond Duke. You've had a chance to study the brackets who do you like beyond the blue devils? I mean who jumps out to you as a team that could could at least get to the final four not further. While there's a lot of teams, and I know a mouse opposed to say this. But I think North Carolina is really talented trouble for that. I can get in trouble for that. So I if anyone says anything I'll just pretend I'm seeing Smith, but but not North Carolina. Roy Williams has done a fantastic job. I do think UVA they've had a lot of setbacks adversity in the tournament. But I do think this is this is Tony Bennett's most talented team. And I think they'll get through and get to the final four. I think Michigan state. I know they're in the same region as Duke, but I I was at the big ten conference tournament last week. I followed them Tom Izzo. This team is just balanced tough. They defend they can score. They really don't have a weakness at all as a sleeper team. I like Texas Tech the best defensive team in the country. They got a kid Jerry Kover who's probably wanted to top five players in college basketball that nobody knows about he's capable as they are. Taking a long run. And I love Florida state. You know, I love what they've done Leonard Hamilton. They won twelve of thirteen games in the regular season. People forget they got to the ACC conference finals loss to Duke. But they have a lot of death in very talented. So there's teams out there. Other than Duke believe it or not that are capable for long run. I'm gonna ask you to put all your old man hat for second. You and I did this a little bit the other night in Chicago during the big ten turnament. Will you go back to that last year? Even when you lost to Arkansas Scotty Thurman shot sorry to bring this up. You had seen your late and teams teams at three or four all Americans seem to time. And when you're watching now played there, but you're watching now this one and done era are the guys that he good. I mean, you look at them and think, yeah, these guys could have played when we did and won something. That's a good question. I think I think I think there's some really talented players and a lot of young talented players. But you know, the difference was you had older players more experienced players who had the opportunity maybe go pro who didn't think that UNLV team in nineteen ninety blue blue out Duke and Denver in the championship game. And you had Stacy Augmon.

"I think in a forty minute basketball game. I just don't think they can they can keep up with this team. I think the Vata Reno is way too. Good. Would you agree with that JD? Yeah. Hundred percent. Here's the problem with UNLV. They can't score inside there an outside based team, but Nevada's Nevada. Reno is mean guards are seven both. Their guards are 6'7 Amari hardy, six two bathrooms. A generous six foot six one. They're going to have. A hard time getting their shot off and who's gonna who's gonna scorn Jordan Carolyn who's going to score on trishaw Thurman is is going to score on trae, Sean. I'm I'm just breaking it down for a matchup standpoint. And a depth standpoint. I it's really not very close. It's going to be very very difficult for for for UNLV to even stay competitive in this game. And they're going to have to outside trust because they're not gonna score inside. Do you guys think that this is the type of game that could save Marvin Menzies job? Yes. Do you think? It's that important JD says, yes, Ronn won't. Could it if they won exactly right. I mean, there's still they're still who they are. They're still in a mention the flukes happened in sports sometimes. And that's why we love it is that is that it really is. Hey, listen, we can have both sides. Will you make a case for for Rams patriots? We make a case for whatever we want. But but flu happen, so and this would have to be considered a fluke. If UNLV was able to win this game. They're ten point underdogs ten and a half point underdogs. There's so many people in this town that are just drinking the Kool aid, and they just don't speak their mind and tell it like it is whether you're the flagship say whatever that they don't know the history, they don't know they don't care UNLV basketball and they're on the brink of being irrelevant. I don't know if you would agree with that. I think they are. I mean, this is this is year. Number three for Marvin Menzies you got what three thousand people in the stands that don't do a lot of these games. This is unacceptable. And yet there are people out there that say look the team is young give it more time. I'm tired of the excuses every single year. We heard the same thing with Dave rice every fricken year the same excuses where young. Let's give this guy more time. He's developing this team. I'm tired of these cases. You don't hear that with other teams cross the country? It just seems like with UNLV it's time and time again the excuses after losses. Well, we lost air force. We gave up one hundred and four one hundred and six points. But you know, the the crowd noise was certainly a factor though..

Raiders fans, twice abandoned, earn notorious honor

"You're listening to the spoken edition of the San Francisco Chronicle. Raiders fans twice abandoned deserve much better by an Killian. Congratulations raiders fans. It's official. Now, you are the most screwed over fans in American sports. Oh, sure. Others have vied for the title in the past Baltimore had a pity party. For retiring. Cleveland felt abandoned shame with Houston old time New Yorker is still like to talk about when two of their baseball teams laughed Seattle. Still would like an NBA team. Thank you very much. But nobody has it as bad as Oakland Raiders fans screwed over not by one but two generations of the same family, though, that's relatively old news. Mark Davis announced he was going to Las Vegas in March twenty seventeen this week has served only to emphasize the pathetic situation faced by some of the greatest fans in sports history. It looks like Christmas Eve will be the final home game of the Oakland Raiders. The last hurrah for the Oakland fans who. Who have been treated like dirt abandoned twice loyalty? Taken for granted served a terrible product from most of the past two decades duped into believing. There could be a winning farewell tour in Oakland until Jon Gruden arrived and tore down the team. And now, it looks like there might not even be another season to say goodbye, you can blame the city of Oakland for filing the lawsuit against the team this week, and forcing the raiders hand or you can blame Davis and his minions for pulling a tentative agreement to play in Oakland in twenty nineteen off the table in the wake of the lawsuit or you can blame the NFL which has been using Oakland as a pawn for years. What you can't do is blame the fans they've taken it and taken it and taken it. And now they're losing their team. Again. Many of these fans already have lived through this on game days. The Coliseum is full of twice jilted fans. Many of whom have passed on their abandonment issues to a second generation they. Had their hearts ripped out in nineteen eighty two when the team moved to Los Angeles when the team came back in nineteen ninety-five many of those fans despite having sworn off the silver and black came back for their loyalty. They've received just four winning seasons four playoff wins. And a prolonged middle finger if the raiders had been truly interested in staying in the bay area and this goes back to the late Al Davis. They should've negotiated with the forty Niners to build one super stadium to house both teams. That's the only logical proven solution for two NFL teams in the same arket. But Al Davis was opposed and his son inherited that position, which is ridiculous. You think the giants and the jets like each other? No, but they both belong in a New York market just like the forty Niners and the raiders both belong in the bay area. Where will the raiders play next year? Who knows the university of Nevada in Reno is tossed around as a real possibility. That's where the raiders. Is reportedly planned to take their training camp. Once they are the Las Vegas raiders. The raiders could go to UNLV for a year. But that would dilute their glittery arrival in the Vegas market in twenty twenty. Could they go to San Diego for year? Bizarre. San Antonio one of their previous flirtation cities. Also, weird Levi's that would only serve to underscore. How stupid it is that the two teams didn't find a compromise stadium years ago? Cal now Stanford unlikely though the amount of remaining fans might be small enough next year to easily fit into fifty thousand seat Stanford Stadium. Of course, Oakland remains a possibility probably the most likely solution. And how pleasant that would be a year of nasty acrimonious partnership in a building full of dead mice overflowing sewage. And faulty x Ray machines Pittsburgh quarterback. Ben Rothlisberger said the ancient x Ray machines in Oakland didn't work well enough Sunday, which is why his return to the game. Was delayed after a rib injury wherever the raiders play. Their fan base is sure to shrink the enthusiasm was sucked out of this season before it even began because of the trade of Khalil Mack to Chicago the investment in season tickets is too much for so little in return on Sunday. Despite the influx of Pittsburgh fans. The parking lot wasn't quite as crowded for tailgating as it's been in the past. But it was still a great scene generations of fans who've made the drive for years, not only from all over the East Bay. But also, the central valley and farther to play music and grill and hang out and talk raiders. This is our real game one man who's been coming for years said as he poured bourbon for his friends. This is what I'll miss for the most screwed over fans in sports. They were having a pretty good time.

Look out college hoops: Duke is just getting started

"College basketball regular season, which many people ignore is now interesting look at this Duke team and then the tournament because it's one and done increases the odds, they may get upset. This is great for college basketball. And the reason I think they can go undefeated potentially. It's very very early. And then win the whole thing. Guys. What why couldn't UNLV do it because Duke head coach K why couldn't the fab five win the whole thing? Well, we know why that was a different story. Okay. Fine. But still coach Kane got in the way of a lot of teams net. And now he's playing in the one in done sandbox. Right. He's like, okay. Everyone else you're playing now. I'm playing one in done. But these one in Duns are being coached by coach Kane, they have a chance it's ridiculously early. They have a chance to do. What hasn't been done in a long time? A couple of things number one. Let's not act every time. We talk about the fab five not winning the national championship. Everybody points to the time out that wasn't a time out. Chris webber? Let's remember that the year before that they got a nine late about thirty by UNLV. I'm sorry about Duke. Right. So this remember that that's double one number two. Everybody's talking about shooting. I don't see a team that can't shoot Zion could hit perimeter shots. Barrett can hit perimeter shots can reddish can shoot. Okay. And there is something to be said, remember we're talking about kids. We're not talking about an NBA team. We're talking about kids. And if ever there are individuals that could be demoralized is on a basketball court see with football, you have so many you have so many different components on on a basketball court. If you got one superstar that can intimidate a team if you got to it could overwhelm a nation and college basketball if you got three. Hopeless

"Feasible relatable for a player to be recruited by unlv because he'd spent time in vegas that's the case in los angeles this weekend whether it's you know parties or clubs or just hanging out all the events in around stables the idea that the lakers have a chance to sign two max players to completely remake their roster over the next two years and while this year's free agent free class is not as deep as next year's free aging class potentially is this is a recruiting weekend nilly and because of it i think that's why magic johnson is saying he has no regards excuse me i mean no regrets not even one the magic johnson came out yesterday and said he has no regrets overtaking lonzo ball ii now this this of course this is of course comes on the back of lavarra wall in lithuania saying that you know if the other two brothers didn't end up as lakers that led the lonzo wouldn't resign do i think that uh that putting out these little of our for fires are and annoyance i do do i think that they're a little underwhelmed add some of the performances of lonzo ball they are but i think they also see the greater good that he has improved that there is a high ceiling maybe a more limited cieling than some would have thought going back before the draft but they generally are getting about what they thought they would get.

"Ashamed shame that unlv didn't you know tryon stop that move because i mean that was i believe the best coach that we've had since tarck and he took us to the sweet sixteen and we really haven't been in that ballpark i believe ever since and it's going to take a long time i believe to get back to that quote unquote promised land that we were weather on the way to with kruger guard agree with that by the way the olympics bk how much of you been able to uh be oh pay attention begin usa they're up against that against the you know the germany's the norway's the uh hall and denmark i mean these these the winner teams are just so good and some of these events some of the extreme sports though you know sean white wins chloe kim winds on the snowboard i my wife loves the the winter olympics so japanese kid dead that sean white ended up beating that had our had one on he had highest k todd his run was better did he he came out ahead at an i you know i i don't blame man i knew i had a feeling it was going to end that way and not only did he lose but they awarded a white uh score that was three points higher than i was a wait a minute i mean i i didn't think there was that much of a discrepancy and really i would have given it to the little kid he he's like five foot seven or something just a little tiny guy getting seven feet in the air above the halfpipe i thought his run was incredible i agree with you and i know uh you know you lose uh coming out and he said you know i'm not too.

"From three at one of two from the line you would all be four seven fifty seven percent there are also fifty percent from three at one of two and these are the first free throws of the game for unlv and unlv as a team the worst freethrow shooting team in the conference but jordan johnson who missed that free throw one of the best that eighty six percent did miss that one footsie state with some subs bark is tickets in alex hobbs ian jessop hutchison an haney dean on the floor second free throw his goodbye johnson so it cuts the bronco lead to three at thirteen to tadamori ardy is out there now for un lp is so is embark a jong as well mooring stays sodas clyburn and sodas joosten so mccoy is on the bench abc's left side inside the haiti on the left block working against jong haiti puts the ball the floor outside the hobbs rightwing the dickinson dickinson right corner to jessop ten lsu hobbs left wing hobbs given of open look now comes to the baseline underneath and his past deflected out of bounds by warring but only five seconds to shoot you will be done a good job defending the perimeter on this possession they have i think hobbs open for a 3point shot but sometimes when you first come into a game you're trying to get into the flow of a game unless it's a wide open 3 those are tough to start with abdel inbound from the corner tough spot to pass from eighty three where the ball hutchison two one lead it why and it will not arnn and that means it's a 30second violation unlv will get it on the turnover as a very tough place to inbound the ball right in the corner and then he inbounded to your six eleven center to 3point line with five seconds left not much progress could do there the unlv let haney be the open guy unlv with a basketball trailing by three jonk clyburn out brunt did houston houston gives it up to mooring maury bounce pass inside joosten finishes at the rim three layups reduce them he has six points of unlv within one at thirteen to twelve boise state is led so far.
