And Byron medalist union civil rights and consumer groups all expressing support for a measure to expand Maryland's commitment to offshore wind. Now this bill aims to modernize the electricity grid to transmit offshore wind energy. The measure would set a goal for Maryland to generate 8.5 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2031, Maryland is now working toward building two gigawatts pending federal approval of two different projects off the coast of ocean city right now. Another Maryland bill that would expand the attorney general's powers, this one in police probes is moving forward. This bill would give the attorney general independent authority to prosecute police after investigating officer involved deaths. It passed initial approval in the House of delegates, the Senate is expected to vote on it later this week. If approved, this legislation would actually expand part of a package of police reforms past two years ago. If you listen to our traffic reports often you know that there are two many crashes locally on the Baltimore Washington Parkway, maybe some Parkway improvements will help out on that. The big thing coming is all the new signs, more than a 150 signs on the Baltimore Washington Parkway will be replaced and they'll be joined by more than 30 newer signs too. The color scheme on these signs won't change, but the National Park Service plans to use special reflectivity to make it easier for drivers to see what the signs say at night. The park service is also fixing guardrails along the stretch of highway it maintains from the D.C. line north to Maryland route one 75. This is WTO news ML D.C. will be paid 1145 egg prices continue to rise tonight in the bird flu is partially to blame for that we're told. It's affected 58 million birds and there's concern tonight that the illness could potentially become a health concern for humans, why does it now considering a mass vaccination campaign for chickens, hoping to tackle AVN influenza? Sheryl gay stolberg, who covers health policy for The New York Times in Washington, explains when that might roll out. It would take time to scale up this kind of program, the Department of Agriculture tells us that it's testing some potential poultry vaccines, they'll probably know the results of those tests sometime around May. So it's not like this is imminent, but The White House is seriously considering it. Farm birds are already vaccinated against various diseases to keep them healthy. So this isn't really that much different. The bird flu outbreak, which began last year is the biggest, actually, in the nation's history. Turns out, it may not be effective. There's new research suggesting that it may be helping you tackle that cold like you think. It was, it's not doing that now. CBS News reporter Alexander ten with more. Phenylephrine is the active ingredient in almost all of the cold and allergy and flu medications you typically see for decongestant on store shelves. And all of those that rely on phenylephrine while the studies now suggest that it simply isn't any more effective than if you took nothing if you took a placebo. Now, of course, there is the possibility some of those medications could be mixed with other ingredients that are more effective, but the bottom line is most studies suggest that when you take phenylephrine as a tablet or a capsule or a syrup, it just doesn't work any more than what you might be thinking that it's helping you with. At the anacostia river bridges, this afternoon, outbound traffic is very slow, especially through northeast on New York avenue and D.C. two 95 because eastbound traffic on route 50 is bumper to bumper into Maryland between two O one and two O two at Columbia park road and Chevrolet. It is only one lane getting by the truck crash and the diesel spill on the right shoulder, traffic, only getting by single file on the right shoulder. Traffic is backed up to the 11th street bridge. And so more drivers are heading outbound another way. Southbound on I two 95 passed bowling and blue plains and even outbound on the suitland Parkway, heavier traffic than usual, three 95, more normal conditions through southwest, although southbound traffic of the third street tunnel is much slower than usual toward the freeway as well. In Virginia on 95, southbound at the Dale City car rest area it's a broken down truck, and it's blocking the right lane on the main line. 66, the latest crash is westbound between fair lakes and centerville near stringfellow road. Fire rescue response had at least one lane blocked. The other crash west of centerville is clear. Big truck crash and warrenton. 29 southbound is very heavy and slow. V dot had said that traffic was diverted onto two 11 in business 29. We're not sure that's the case. We know that the drivers who have been stuck the longest southbound on the warrens and bypass were being guided past the overturned tractor trailer, single filed to the right, no longer diverted. The media that, you know, a lot of what was written in the last few days about Bill Russell about his life and especially about the things he had to endure, I'm not sure how many NBA fans, especially of younger generations, were aware of everything he had to endure. Almost every story made note of coming home to find his home ransacked and feces spread in various places. I don't know that that has been written about explored disgust in the last 20 years of NBA coverage to the extent that it was in the last few days because now it's important at the end for us to note while Bill Russell wasn't just an incredible player but he's an incredible man and he was a Beacon for social justice and he did it at a time when the consequences and the risks were far, far greater than they are for today's athletes. And so then the details are almost cataloged. But I don't know that an NBA fan reading anything about Bill Russell or about his legacy over the last 20 or 30 years. How much of that would they have seen? I wonder how much of this is our failure? That's right. It's our failure, but also, you know, we have to think about who we are and where we are. It's always makes me, I don't know, I don't know how I feel. I don't know how it makes me feel, but I feel something. When you make the argument, why don't you know about what happened in the 60s or why don't you know what, you know, when you're admonishing this generation. And then I think about it, okay, I'm 53 years old. And when I was in high school, that's the equivalent when I graduated high school. That's the equivalent of looking at me and asking me why I didn't know about things from 1933. You know what I mean? It's just going to make sure we're asking today. If I'm asking today's high school senior, yeah. Exactly. It's the equivalent of saying, well, why didn't you know that? And so, of course, you don't know. I didn't know anything. I mean, now obviously the technology is different because more things have been preserved and you would think. But the actual time gap? Sure. Totally different. You know, the time gap is enormous, a lot of things have changed in 50 years. Most people don't know what happened last Tuesday. Never mind, why don't they know about the early age of the NBA?

"As someone who's skirted a lot of independent study in my life. Yeah, I mean, I would probably, you know, I'd say. This is the thing. And I mean, I started my career covering football in New York, right? And any little thing becomes a part of a player's legacy, like there is the Sam darnold seeing ghost game. There was the Mark Sanchez butt fumble and there was all these things, these little things that you attach to a player that can absolutely ruin them. And I feel like this is the kind of thing that if somebody proposed this to me and knowing the business of the NFL that this is going to get out there for the rest of my life, I'm the guy who doesn't study hard enough, I don't work hard enough. Every time I get sacked, what is the lay fan saying, tweeting at me saying, oh, well you didn't look at that on film, you know? And I want to avoid that in any way, shape, or form, because I want to be able to address that personally. And away from the eyes of the entire world. Yeah, and you know who just became very important in the Cardinals staff, is their IT guy. Everyone's asking me, and how do you mind? I don't know. I mean, I'm sure you can monitor how much time on his iPad, but can you monitor what exactly he's doing on his iPad? I guess you can. I guess they can because this seems like some big brother stuff. He's in a room alone, but they got to know he's doing independent study, not video games, not TV, not whatever. Like this is some weird stuff. There's some sort of eye tracking technology. They're going to have to put that down. Do you have the kids iPad Gary with the YouTube kids or do you do that? They have iPads. We don't monitor them though. They just, it's the wide wild west here. I don't know. They're day trading or something. They're getting crypto. I don't know what it is. But you know, Connor, you're right about the legacy, and you know what? We're in this age right now of social media. I mean, exactly. Like right when he throws interception when he misses a play, like if he made that last play against the packers now, you know, and he threw away from AJ green. Like, of course we're going to say he wasn't stuck. He didn't study the goal line fade that week. Against Russell butler. So are Douglas. We're still Douglass. So it's going to haunt him. And you know that some, you know, we have, well, not with NFL game pass, which is the worst product on God's green earth. But we have access to game film, right? And so we can we can so easily pull that up and be like, well, if he had watched the packers last week, here's a clip of the play and we can show it side by side. I mean, the ways in which he can be embarrassed into this, I feel like or just to no end. And I don't know, do you put a cardinal staffer in that windowless room with him and just make him stare at Kyler? Studying film. I don't know. God, would it be terrible job that would be? So someone did raise an actually a Twitter response to me today was, do you think after a year or two, he's been a good student? They take it out of the contract? I mean, that'd be a nice thing to do. See that happen in a year, two years. And you can do that for people who ask, you can always adjust language in the contract. It's not a cat violation. It's nothing. So, you know, maybe there's incentive there. But again, him calling an impromptu press conference to complain that people think he's not a worker. It's not people. It's his own team. You know, people didn't put that clause in. Success is picking up extra shifts, but now you want to be the boss. Success is getting your foot in the door of a career. And there was no drama to it. You had this negotiation. And you have deshaun Watson and obviously everything that went on there. Sean Watson wasn't even a free agent. And we know the baggage that he brought with him. And you have Lamar Jackson, who still doesn't have a deal at this point, which is pretty stunning. I mean, he was drafted the year before. Kyler Murray, and I mean, I'd ask you, Andrew. Are we making, we don't make that big a deal out of it on this show, but some folks do. Is it a big deal that he doesn't have an agent? Or is this something you know during your career is negotiators? And some you saw every once in a while. Yeah, good question, because I did, let me just say my experience first, when players would come to me in early in my career at the packers because I just came off of being an agent. So players would say, hey, Andrew, you're cool. You're an agent. I'll save my fee, right? I'll save my fee and come to you. And I'm like, this is awesome. I'm skipping down the hall. I'm going to negotiate directly with the player. Turned out to be terrible. Turned out to be the worst experience.

So often, could you explain to me what the differences between meta switch UMG and telco bridges meet team media are? Yeah, sure. First thing that I'd like to say that there are a lot of similarities as Alan says they're both controlled over H two four 8. They are both media gateways and signaling gateways. They both do backhaul of signaling using sig tran and similar things like that. They both handle both access and drunk in size. They're both high availability products to carry a grade suitable for telco. Use. But there are some differences. So they both support the S one the S three and optical, but the scales are different. So for example, the minimum size of UMG goes down to 48, two one three one. Whereas you can scale a telecom bridges right down to one on the S one, which is obviously good for this smaller applications. There's some differences in the legacy TDM support. So what's behind medicine which actually certifying T media gateways? Okay. So I'll take that in two parts. Why team media and why certified? So with T media, we have proven interrupt already between CFS and the telco bridges product line. And the circle bridges has a fine reputation for quality engineering and support. So a company we're very happy very happy to be involved with. And it's providing additional options with some slightly different characteristics from our gateway, which will come on and talk about a little bit later on. The main thing is we ability to scale down further to low end opportunities and also some differences in access protocol types. And then why 35? Well, it's to provide a nice a nice package that customers can be confident in buying would have jointly tested the combined solution and so they know that they have something that's well integrated into our into our management and diagnostics platform and the team media will fulfill the same kind of role in the network that UMG can. So Alan does team media operate with meta switch already affect it does. We've been working together actually for quite some time. Both media gateways are using H two 48 for their control protocols. And matter of fact, a little over a year ago, we won a nice project with a case study customer Hong Kong telecom who is using meta switch.

"Cleveland Brown running back, Jim Brown. There were three things that happened in America that shifted our culture from an east coast point of view to a West Coast point of view. You can even go as far as to say, from a white point of view to a more inclusive African American point of view. And the first one is never talked about. And that's when Jim Brown, the best athlete of the 20th century, left Cleveland for Los Angeles and became the first African American action star in Hollywood. Let me tell you the truth. I couldn't wait to get out of here. This is the place to be. Hollywood. Where's the movie fan? I like movies. Like westerns. I was a fan. But I also was a fan of making money. Taking advantage of social situations. And all of that. What was your relationship like with world champion? This is gonna be deep. We were again with one of a kind. I like wilt. Because along with this great play and he was always doing something that would cause you to have a little 21st dealer with him. While the trade would only foster Chamberlain's celebrity, and the opportunities Hollywood could provide. For the Laker players involved directly, the trade would mark the end of one career, the beginning of another, and a footnote to a third. The trade was not as famously one sided as has become the legend. Daryl imhoff was a seasoned veteran, great locker room presence. The Lakers loved Archie Clark, the young point guard from Conway Arkansas, but he was never going to get his chance playing behind Jerry West. So in Philadelphia, he became a two time all star, very good career, anxiety chambers, who had been the Lakers top pick three years earlier. On July 12th, 1969, under a newspaper headline usually reserved for declarations of war or election results. The Los Angeles Times announced wilt signs 5 year contract with Lakers for $1 million. The subheading was equally sensational. Best team ever predicted for coming season. Longtime LA sports writer Jim Murray gleefully wrote, if you see what appears to be a building moving down Broadway or hill street, don't panic. We got Goliath. Instant world championship. And the city of Los Angeles, braced itself. Champagne ordered. Parades planned. Victory speech is written. It was over. But that fairytale movie, they were hoping for. It turned into a horror flick. I think anytime you make trays in the NBA in particular, when big men were so much more by then, in his ability to rebound, block shots were enormous. And obviously, he's scoring records what every 50 points a game in one season when he was a focal point of the team. And then to come to a team and had two players that had both averaged over 30 a game, four or 5 times in our career a piece, and we're playing on the same team. And you interject someone like him into the game, where all of a sudden he's not the focal point. It was awkward for him, the Lakers were going to slay the NBA's unbeatable dragons. Bill Russell, and the Boston Celtics. Lakers owner Jack Kent cook was sure of it. His players were sure of it. The city was sure of it. It was a foregone conclusion that the Lakers were just going to win right away. They'd been at the doorstep. And now they have the best player in the world. What could go wrong? Everything. The Lakers season would get off to a slow start, losing three of their first four games. And though they would eventually find their gear and run away with the Western Conference, it looked far from effortless. There were three reasons one it takes time, I guess it's like mixing chemicals together, it looks okay, but it's not designed what it should have done. And there was a lot of criticism, of course. Play with, you know, because we don't want to take charge in control of everything. We think about it when you're going to run players quick and stuff like that. We're going to have a tough time. Reason number two, injuries. After suffering a broken hand the previous season. Lakers star Jerry West

"In West Virginia. And so we went there and the thing I noticed that you could just walk right across the street, you didn't have to eat walk across and at that point in time, traffic stopped and let you go. I was amazed at why the streets were. And we spent our time there and really it was an eye opening for me in a sense, a very relaxed attitude bob short. The Lakers quiet Midwest owner had somehow managed to out duel his audacious east coast counterpart. The Los Angeles Lakers had gotten its man, an Elgin Baylor, wouldn't get a sidekick. He would get a side arm. But Laker head coach Fred Shaw's would keep Jerry West holstered for much of his rookie season. I played for him and college for three years. He helped recruit me. But when I got to Los Angeles here, it was completely different. He would not, I did not play a whole lot. My first half of my rookie season when I say a whole lot, I don't think I ever played more than 20 minutes a game. And yet, I was felt like I was making progress, but he would tell the sports writer as well. He's going to get hurt. He's not very big and not only about 178 pounds. Well, I never missed a game in college. So it was a huge adjustment for me. For Jerry West's education. He would have to look no further than Elgin Baylor. Having Elgin Baylor and to be alongside of him and to be around him, how he treated me, he treated me like an equal. When for a while, I wasn't close to his equal. But he helped me become a better player by just watching him. There was no doubt that once Jerry West, joined the Lakers in Los Angeles, it was like a warning Bill had gone off to the rest of the league. That this team was going to be special. But the bill that Laker owner bob short really wanted a ring, was the one in his Laker cash register. As the team still struggled to make ends meet. Bob short invested a ton of money into this team, and this was really the first quality product that he produced. Now we just need more people to watch them. But I think my dad recognized that people pay money to see stars. Whether they're on the court like Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, you feel good rich. Or they're sitting in the stands by the early 1960s, Doris Mary Ann capehart had become a household name. She went by, Doris Day, Doris Day was the original LA Lakers celebrity. Bob shortly were two tickets to every single game because short knew that having doors day at his games was good for business. It was from that moment that the Lakers had a direct connection with Hollywood. Fellow a listers like Dean Martin, Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, would follow day. With superstars like Elgin Baylor and Jerry West on the Laker court, and a burgeoning celebrity fan base in the stands. Bob short's big move finally began to pay off, and the seats at their memorial sports arena on south figueroa street slowly began to fill up. This was the real birth of showtime, which of course Jerry buss would later be credited for, but bob short tried everything. He even tried cheerleaders for the first time long before the Laker girls. But according to Debbie Danielson, who was one of those original Lake or cheerleaders, it didn't go over too well. My mother was a choreographer and she taught dancing all through the 50s and she started a high school dance line at St. Louis park high school. We were the first in the league to have cheerleaders general manager for the Lakers, lived in St. Louis park. And he may have seen us perform and maybe got an idea that the Lakers needed something to live enough to games. So I believe he had contacted my mother and that's how the liquor has got started. So 6 little high school girls with our 1950s attire on got out there and we would jump out and do a few cheers at the timeout was kind of sketchy as to how we were accepted to begin with and one thing I remember vividly is the Boston Celtics were in town. And red olive was the coach and we got out on the floor during a timeout and he screamed, get those goddamn girls off the floor. You are listening to westward on the Dan Patrick podcast network.
