"What's first, Josh? One year ago. On the night of January, 7th 2020 Americans were shocked to learn that Iran had launched more than a dozen ballistic missiles at US and coalition forces in Iraq. I ran called it fierce revenge for the assassination of General Kasem Soul Amani. As reports of the attack inundated the airwaves, viewers were left wondering what had happened, and, perhaps most importantly, where their casualties The barrage, damaged runways, tents, equipment and a helicopter and the Pentagon acknowledged that 110 people needed to be treated later for traumatic brain injuries. No one was killed. The remaining U. S and Coalition forces that had not been evacuated were able to take cover in bunkers thanks to what President Trump referred to at the time as an early warning system. We now know what many of the national security community suspected That early warning system was the space based infrared system, or Sievers, a constellation of satellites that surveilled Earth's surface. 24 7 to detect missiles. Rarely has the Defense Department offered such a high profile example of the system's capabilities and its direct impact on the American War fighter. Our Space Forces Second Space Warning Squadron at Buckley Air Force Base in Colorado was doing their job that night and provided that critical early warning to seek cover. In an exclusive interview they shared of one of the most high profile missile attacks on American forces in recent history, Squadron commander Lieutenant Colonel Brain and Davenport said. This is what they're trained to do. Day in and day out. That part felt very normal. That's why it felt surreal because it felt like any other day. Other than the fact that we all knew there were Americans and allies. On the other end of that missile. Job. Well done. Space force. Our nation salutes you. As an airman who wore a space wings badge during my last duty assignment at Space and Missile System Center. I'm glad to see my former colleagues protecting our forces from the ultimate high ground. And in case you didn't hear it's now official. The headquarters of U. S Space Command will be located in Huntsville, Alabama. The Pentagon is moving forward to satisfy a congressional directive in the 2021 defense policy bill that will result in the renaming of at least 10 Army bases and possibly two Navy ships that honor the Confederacy. Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller appointed for members of what will eventually be an eight member congressional E mandated panel, the lengthily named Commission on the naming of items of the Department of Defense that commemorate the Confederate states of America or any person who served voluntarily with the Confederate States of America. Congress voted on January 1st to override President Trump's veto of the fiscal 2021 National Defense Authorization Act, a $740 billion defense policy bill that includes a provision for the Defense Department to create a special commission tasked with putting an end to the long standing U. S military tradition. Of honoring Confederate leaders. This is a major waste of time and money at a time when our nation is deeply in debt and our military as many challenges and a number of serious enemies to deal with. This is nonsense. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called Joint Chiefs Chairman, Army General Mark Milley to discuss what she described as necessary precautions to prevent an unhinged president from accessing nuclear codes. But experts and officials say there's no place in the system for the military or Congress to intervene in this sitting presidents access to the nuclear arsenal. In a circulated letter, Pelosi said, quote the situation of this unhinged president could not be more dangerous and we must do everything that we can to protect the American people from his unbalanced assault on our country and our democracy. And quote Pelosi and dozens of other lawmakers, mostly Democrats have called for President Trump's removal from office following the violent takeover of the capital by a few 100 of his supporters. All I can say is the speaker Pelosi is a vicious, nasty, power hungry person who seems to enjoy doing all she can to her president Trump a man who she has hated since the day people elected him. A Planned Uptick in Defense Spending in the UK
"Here to talk about european defence topics because there are many that have emerged over the past few weeks from the united kingdom announcing that it's going to spend big on defense to the revival of the german eurofighter typhoon and developments on the swiss fighter competition. There's certainly a lot to talk about. So tony i wanted to turn to you first. And in addition to that we have a lot of details to share about aviation weeks military forecast and the opportunities that that presents for companies. Where but i. I'm gonna turn to tony to talk a little bit about what's been going on in the. Uk can bring up to speed on where london is on its spending commitments function. Yeah i mean we been quite interesting week. So last week We sort of learned that this very lodge integrates review. Probably what reporting this year and this was going to be sort of an all encompassing big review Biggest one since the cold which would look at the. Uk's defense posture decisions on offense equipment and so on and basically equip the uk for future wolf Future what we did get instead. Now the review is going to come in february. And i'll come back to that in a sec. What we do get instead was essentially a sixteen billion pound or twenty. Four billion pounds boost to defenses causes now sixteen if you listen to the government's consent to party's manifesto or it's twenty million pounds overall over four years so it's a significant boost and the largest ones called call. What was very interesting with that. There was only a few mentions of. How would inference airspace. The uk will get a space command. Sort of link probably onto the force. Because that's the lead on their in space Operations here in the uk and also probably some more money for the ten pace but it was quite vacant that it was very detail on this. And that's partly because of this lack of strategy that still yet to come out so we're gonna get this extra you know pubic pounds. But we have no idea how it's really going to be spent and there's a federal criticism about that cycle. Tony also. Where's the money going to come from with with brexit on the horizon what what does the. Uk's financial situation. How is it going to be able to afford to boost the budget in that way. This is the big elephant in the room. I mean we're heading. Towards at the moment no deal brexit the most ruinous brexit the one that say basically sends businesses and unemployment into the heavens than we're already in a pandemic and then the government's about to really really took the uk off the edge by not getting a deal. We we wait and see if we're gonna get one so yeah. Where is this money can to come from So the talks. All know spending increases with civil servants next year got sunny poppy onset. Because they'll see there's a huge amount of money that has been spent on the pandemic and then there's also talk of reducing international aid budget for example. But there's no clear defined on how this is going to be paid to too. Many of us are expecting a big liking defense. we folded. we'd probably end up being the only country in europe to start cutting fence oversee sex. She'd been wasn't done a very good job in persuade. Prime minister that you know we do really need to be investing. There are still black holes to fill and alleged to be. It's ten to thirteen billion black holding our equipment. Spend where that money would come from. Yeah i'm pretty going to be paying more tax and goodness knows after brexit houses work. It's i think it's going to be a very difficult first. Few months or maybe years post pandemic and post brexit before. How how this is gonna work out. What he's player that haven't gone away. Regards will happens off the breakfast or what happens to the pandemic needed to be done. How we pay for it big question. Big elephant in the room

This is not a complete surprise last year president. My call spoke out about the need for a strategy for space defense and this is basically the result. There's a small matter of satellites. There's a small matter of certain countries spying on other people satellites and satellites we forget as we earthlings move about the planet <hes> <hes> actually dependent awful lot looking at a laptop. You're looking at a desk. We've got all kinds of news information G._P._S. that we rely on and of course <hes> what present McCoy saying this is a real matter data of national security. This is about <hes> France needing to control what is happening around it satellites and of course <hes> what comes up is the International Space Race and we know that of course historically <hes> it is the United States Russia earned to some extent China who have been in the forefront of this but France has been playing a rule <hes> as far as an developing a lot of space technology and involvement for quite a while it has it's it's a when you do a little bit of reading into it. The French really do quite like that that the military space work <hes> there's a center in Leo Mobile Down which which has a military surveillance of space objects. It's called Cosmos and in two thousand ten it had a new joint space command. This are natural fascination with space going on here because it seems to be a unique thing to in in Europe at least Franz what what France Louis keen to do and has been doing is developing technology on stunned with the Italians <hes> amongst amongst others so president McCall's vision weren't complete surprise. You is a European one and in the same way that on Tom I should point out by the way that <hes> president mccoo made this announcement about this new military space command as not only as part of the modernization of its armed forces but he did it just before on Saturday on <hes> before Bastida and of course where there's this big military parade <hes> one that is very envied by many countries particularly this current U._S. president <hes> where we saw an involvement of British Spanish Dutch Belgian <hes> some <hes> German troops so it's a context of France playing a key role within the European Space Agency not least by for example making the center <hes> surplus special G._N._A.. which is in French Guyana and crew available available <hes> for launchers and that is really been dubbed Europe's spaceport it also has an important center in to lose so it's not a a complete surprise? It's been historically bubbling away if you will but it's true that it's not a very there is some British involvement and of course there's a very famous French astronaut <hes> Biscay <hes> who has spent rather a lot of time <hes> already <hes> in space exploration <hes> on the International Space Station on I that was back in two thousand seventeen and stunt. He's going to be going the again next year. That's indeed dot com slash marketplace. Twenty nine thousand nine is the year that the space economy blasts off from American public media? This is marketplace tech demystifying the digital economy. I'm Ali would. As you know, all this week. We're looking ahead to twenty nineteen and what's likely to be big in business and technology, and we tried to tell you this last year. But this year the space economy is really going to take off. I am not trying to make another pun here. I promise according to space angels and investment firm. That specializes in aerospace private investment in space related businesses has gone from a handful of companies and a couple hundred million dollars in two thousand nine to three hundred seventy five companies and fifteen billion dollars today. The Trump administration is making space a huge economic priority and a military one creating a new space command in December to oversee and organized the country's space based operations Kimberly Adams is a senior reporter and marketplace and our resident space expert. She says these moves are all part of an international race. That's got money at its core. I think we're gonna see a lot more push to org. Is regulations to put more of the authority under the Commerce Department. The FAA is talking about maybe allowing some launches potentially from airports and things like that just to make better use of what resources and facilities are out there to get more companies up in space more quickly. Right. So everything is going faster. I assume that is related to the fact that the United States is not the only country pushing hard to get up into space and start making money up there. Right. Exactly. And I think that's going to be one of the other big themes in twenty nineteen is sort of this global competition to make money in space, so China major player in this, and they are moving like gangbusters to try to get more launches going into really build out their space industry, you see India getting involved the European Union has been involved for a really long time. I think there's going to be more effort there. And that means in addition to the United States kind of streamlining its own regulations there's going to. Have to be more global cooperation in terms of how the economics of space are going to work. You're seeing that the US and certainly the past few months really embraced the idea of public private partnerships. As the way, maybe to you know, cut some of that red tape and start moving faster. What do you think about that approach? And how does it compare to some of those other countries and how they're getting it done? Yeah. I think there's a really stark difference. And this is something that's actually been highlighted by the Trump administration on a couple of different occasions that back in the day space activities research investment was from the US government for government purposes.
