"Rooms on competition policy subsidies social protection the environment or anything similar any more than that you should be obliged to accept U. K. rules the UK will maintain the highest standards in these areas better in many respects windows of the E. U. without the compulsion of a treaty Dr Meredith Carly is professor of economics at Cambridge university and an established experts on will trade the E. U. wants what they call a level playing field so they're real fear is that the U. K. would do something in pure domestic policies they talk a lot about regulation but it could just be if the U. K. simply cuts tax rates on firms that are operating in the U. K. then it would be much more desirable for a manufacturer to locate their plant in the U. K. because tax rates are super low and maybe have very loose labor market regulation again it would be beneficial to firm the European Union doesn't want all of these plants leaving Europe relocating in the U. K. and then basically having free access to the European market if the U. K. tries to attract business investment by relaxing faith safety standards for workers and so I think that's a legitimate concern the pragmatic point though is it actually people in the U. K. probably one reasonably good labor market protections they probably want reasonably high consumer safety protections for different types of products effect to be that you would have to accept the U. K.'s would that the UK government has no intention of undercut saying things like environmental social and labor protections but trust enough I mean well there's a third way and so the third way would be something like establishing a public international investment court to regulate problems that could arise between the two countries that exists already doesn't it's the European Court isn't it well there's the European Court of justice which is not something that appeals to people within the U. K. but if you look at the Canadian European free trade agreement when problems arise where firms feel they're not getting fairly treated within the country they've invested in there's a joint tribunal where the European Union picks and Jr S. Canada picks and jurists and those jurists here at the plea of you know particular firm so it would make sense for the U. K. and the E. U. to maybe establish some broad principles and then say well if at some future date one side or the other feels that those principles are not being met we could have a dispute settlement system to help resolve this dispute what should we read into the fact that the U. K. E. doesn't want to sign up to any use standards on workers rights environmental protection state Tate when it comes to a trade agreement with the U. is it because it wants to have an agreement with American it feels it called if it signs up to these standards no I don't think it has to do with America I think actually some of this is time pressure is begin to negotiate a trade agreement you have a period of consultation with your domestic agents the United States has already had a consultation period about negotiating a future trade relationship with the U. K. and American businesses labor unions NGOs in the environment they've already been able to voice their concerns and their desires for trade agreement and in the U. K. we've only just left the European Union and the government really hasn't had a good deep analysis of what policies are desirable for the U. K. and so I think that there's a sense in which they're saying okay we don't want to sign up to the European state aid formula right away because we need to figure out like is that a good choice for the U. K. but the point is that there isn't really a time for that the discussion is that the U. K. has to come to an agreement with the U. before the end of this year otherwise there won't be any agreement I think they created a time pressure problem for themselves without doing this consultation in many cases businesses alike to have clear standards that are the same with their foreign competitors so that they can make products that they can sell in foreign markets so what you're saying is it possible for a person to be this global free trade powerhouse it wants to be I'm to maintain some sovereignty over its own rules and regulations the two are not incompatible the two are not incompatible you look at Japan you look at South Korea you look at Canada you look at Australia does your economy is very similar in size in an industrial based to the U. K. they maintain a fair amount of sovereignty in Japan famously has very stringent food safety standards and when they import things from the United States United States producers have to produce your hired food safety standard to serve the Japanese market than they do to serve the US domestic market Dr Meredith cruelly ending this edition of business daily to get in touch the Twitter handles our Asman one at B. B. C. or ax B. C. business today's.

"That's it hello heather doing traffic pushing the buttons and tell me what to do and a prime thank without the buttons I it is it it is amazing to me that we have a bay area that distort go up by the way it's actually in in U. K. now a side to side you are you were an independent that's you capable yeah that the bay area is actually having a homeless people deliver addiction notices that it's not a good story for us if we had them out I don't know what the beaches we have but it's a dangerous job areas but it's a valid I don't have a problem with them doing it I have a problem with them being paid under what they would pay a non homeless person I am that's my problem I agree with your point but I think that second idea number one point is someone has to do it though right yeah but you put it's a dangerous job it is a big thing how would you respond if somebody knocks at your door and and smells like them and sleep in a car and tells you at your house you believe them when you're like get out of here right well there's that too I mean what if they're interested that's all they have to do is handed to you and then turn walk yeah well that's okay but we'll get to survive you know people will come and say what does it say what is this tell me what the envelope ID I know but that's you know it's Gander as I hear yeah and and how are they going to get to the areas that they are to deliver them to me or drive them and drop them off in a room I mean I guess they would have to be on there either but it's going to be in the areas that they're currently occupy there's a question I don't know about how much people how often do they relocate in the city hi a homeless person limovan Golden Gate park how often will he come down to stay at North Beach well I don't know I bet I I will but also you doing all right your you know how many cases if you're bi polar you're doing drugs and you're hanging around a certain area that might be walking around is what I'm saying is I don't know I mean again that it's just that was a thought I had during the break us like I really don't know that answer I don't know you know what how most people do during the day I'm sure there is you know handing on yeah and is there and and how how is there is some people might be homeless and they just packed their stuff away then they go work and how they say you're homeless on homes crime how well what what severity right yeah all that we we report on some of that you know right a person's been killed in their tents or at the end of the call from fights where people come out they get that okay into either that's that those people go to jail for a long they should that's like that's terrible horrible right and it's mostly college kids and you don't see a lot I've heard of a lot in the bay area being in Jersey New York was an ad and several of them this insane anyway I don't I I really don't know when I hear stories like that I I it it just breaks my heart and I really don't get it but it's it's one of those things all right I said I want to talk about this and by Jim Jordan two things about Jim shore number one I had a long talk today with Mike Larson who I am I'm helping in his campaign against Jim Jordan and I helped him write some political stuff today and I'll tell you about that and we probably probably get Mike on he might be on the market he's the right for bill Maher my collection he's running against him Jordan in Ohio and and so it was interesting about you know how do you attack a guy like that you know what that I live in and I'm really red area I in it a movie you know again if Jim Jordan appears vulnerable like Mitch McConnell responsible Lindsey Graham is beginning to appear we've seen Republican governors and real deep red state solution to blue yeah what we'll we'll try to figure out but that's now when I talk about one explain to you guys how we could actually have reparations IRA and that as a Sam Cisco supervisors announcing plans for that how it could work and really be a positive thing here's the kicker okay how to change the name that's coming up next are you wanted me to talk a lawsuit is that right okay I'm anger finding is an incredible opportunity for all of us who have mortgages and here's what happens you have a mortgage European interest on the menu bar that's how it works right you bar big long for money you end up paying in interest many times more than the actual principle so if you can lower it you can save tons I did this I just got a refi and I'm just too much time he wants ME email explain it to you I've got a refi from a thirty year mortgage to a twenty year mortgage that I've compay often fifteen if I pay it off in fifteen I'll save a hundred and fifty thousand dollars either way I'm gonna save a lot of money how much will you save each month you just do it you amber tries that over thirty years if I could save you two or three hundred dollars a month I say all rights Kevin lines at anchor finding that adds up and that's a lot huge take that money you were and put it into a savings account or put it in the market or do whatever you want with it.

"The places that could be most heavily affected by the U. K.'s withdrawal from the European Union is your brochure situated on the southern tip of the Iberian peninsula your browser has been a British territory for the last three centuries a fact that is contested by Spain buzz of having voted almost unanimously against breaks at the rock as it is known could neither see its relationship with Spain changed substantially go ahead sh Kerr reports she broke her may only have thirty thousand inhabitants but it has been a long standing coals of friction between Britain and Spain brexit has added another dimension to this already complex issue ninety six percent of Gibraltarians voted to remain in the year when the brexit referendum of twenty sixteen that reflects that dependence on trade with the E. U. member states to bolster the economy is based heavily on industry such as gaming gambling and finance which old benefited from the E. U.'s lack of trade barriers but the people of Gibraltar will also concerned that leaving the block could put at risk that status is a British territory Gibraltar has belonged to Britain since the early seventeen hundreds but Spain believes it's a remnant of the British Empire and the ownership of the rock should be returns to Madrid as an E. U. member state the U. K. could resist Spanish efforts to re claim sovereignty but now when the issue comes up the U. K. will be alone while Spain has the support of the other twenty six E. U. countries so far there has been little change Madrid in London have been holding negotiations in parallel to the main brexit discussions on a number of issues and the two countries will continue bilateral talks in the coming months cooperation on the environment is a key issue as all border controls between Gibraltar in Spain because the rock is a tax haven it is being called in for good such as tobacco to be smuggled over its border into Spain but arguably the most urgent matter related to Djibril Cisse exit from the E. U. is the status of the fifteen thousand also Spanish workers he crossed over the border each day to work on the rock on the Spanish side incomes alone and unemployment hi by contrast Gibraltar has one of the highest per capita GDP is in the world making a crucial for the economy of the surrounding area many of those who cross each day to work in Gibraltar worry that their labor status will be affected by red tape but like so many aspects of brexit we probably won't know if that will be the case until later this year when the so called transition period comes to an end and the UK's new relationship with the E. U. is set in writing go ahead sh K. D. W. Madrid and I'm Keith Walker and bone you're listening to inside Europe two decades ago Portugal was in the grip of a nationwide drug epidemic the dire situation led to a radical daring solution the decriminalize ation of old drugs on the healthcare approach to dealing with addiction we'll be down as the so called Portuguese experiment is not celebrated around the world as the Portuguese model Megan Williams has more from Lisbon all it was crazy they had lines from here they're like listen could I don't know what yeah and you went on the ramp then it's like a big line and the deal is a little bit you know one band called the bag of money you go down what you want and they they get a home in days stands on the outskirts of Lisbon describing the drug scene here in the late nineties that was at the height of Portugal's drug epidemic beside him is a white van with a line up of mostly men who come here to the small vial drug unit to get their daily dose of methadone like Paul who grew up in the U. "U. K. continuing to get reaction to the state of the union speech from last night from from various sources this one I found particularly interesting from CNN contributor van Jones in a van Jones is a he works with the dream courts of social justice accelerator very liberal is any he's very liberal is that he's an activist but he said that when you look at the the president's speech the contents of it it's really laying out his strategy for the next election he said he is helping African Americans in real life and reaching out to them for their vote in twenty twenty and you talked about you know some of the things that the president had bad had done last night to recognize prominent African Americans the brigadier general being one of them the opportunity scholarship being another crime victims and and people that are prominently African American community that looked that folks you better wake up because I always was a Bakul I'll tell you one of the strongest aspects of the speech last night was when it was very early in the speech and trump was ticking off all of the economic accomplishments especially in terms of employment and he was talking about each category of minorities African American Asian women all of them saying they know is the lowest unemployment rate in the history of this country and all he did was take off one after another that's all he did and it was an extraordinarily effective part of the speech and that's exactly what van Jones is talk yeah he tweeted this morning said this was a warning shot from the trump campaign to liberals and we need to take this very seriously in order to win do you know create Chris Matthews of course is the very liberal host at MSNBC and in Iowa the night of the caucus where we got done no results he came out and said I'm looking at all of these candidates right now this is Chris Matthews I don't see one of them who can be trump well I mean you look at how many there are still in the race that are still getting money and support I mean the top four that were dead right now are in a you know with the IRA results that we have so far all right let's get out to a traffic is were running behind and let's see what what why no without say about the road to give a little more activity here there this words Roger by east lawn eighty from Roseville ten minutes to the cap cities what passes what westbound on the gaps of the freeway another nine gets heated downtown we sell that plague reported in the left lane of the cap city freeway at Arden way still looks like we're still seeing both sides of the freeway reported their eastbound and westbound now we're seeing a spot a brief slowing on the westbound side so quite possibly that's where it is but none the less less we saw C. K. citizen he actually lives in France and if you heard his interview about Brecht to that was the main reason why we asked but here's a short clip when I asked him obviously about how the corona virus crisis is being handled where he lives in Europe and what you know what but not only the media are doing but the regular people think about of course what the government's doing here is on voice to America yes this is an issue no less we've got study it right run across Europe today speed alerts that we've had some outbreaks in Germany and France for that days being oversee the big story again I just relate brexit to this as well you can too with everything else that's been the story here where it is being a and E. U. eve actuation flight which was a full of the Europeans including British people at a course near saying you know okay Britain will help now and and what is plain is doing I think I think I'll be right in saying in the air right now and and it's arriving in Paris where some people in distant box then it's flying owned to the U. K. where others will this about these rule nationals are being in in China and that gonna be put into quarantine this now I I in the U. K. there's sent to currency in center where people being put in there for fourteen days there already I think is about eighty six people in there already and I think there's that this could be the this new influx are also going to be put into quarantine to so you'll still seeing a European nations evacuations people around Europe ask your pricing as a unit with this and sharing Croft is there of travel ban in Europe the United States today starts no flights the starter travel ban no flights coming in from China is that how does not yet not yet that's not why I think that is is not formal government impose travel bans but we have seen many airlines many European allies like Lufthansa Swiss British Airways and others have suspended that flies to China so if you want to go to China you find it very difficult at about but it's not a it's not as yet a government imposed ban or that's mark are you K. voice with his thoughts on coronaviruses awesome is is that and I don't mean awesome literally mean awesome sarcastically as a week ago yeah we were talking about the corona viruses like we're talking about a two we were saying the obvious you know how is it that all the airports you just running regular as usual and all over the world you know you got this entire city unlocked on yet commercial flights or flight to Europe Asia Africa South America nobody's doing anything about it that was a week ago now of course of the world guess what happened more more people got infected more and more people died and now they're saying well maybe we should stop the flights you think you think there might be a good idea voice to America where the world comes to talk.

"To live that day right here at nine thirty here in London here in London we get seeing some day said dropping so U. K. in December retail sales falling zero point six percent wow the full cost was for a zero point six percent increase at the retail sales number excluding fuel it fell by zero point eight percent and the estimate was for eight was for a zero point eight percent rise so we've had a lot of weak data out of the U. K. without a loss of dovish common tree for the central banks of that set you back at the bank of England and adds that full the momentum behind or expectation all of a rate cut from the bank of England has been increasing and without it with that we've seen a drop in sterling I'm just looking now what we're seeing a and yes we also a dropping setting as a result was still around the one fancy mock but it's for laying off to that day's points yeah I'm not falling yet into the red so it looks like maybe market participants had I'm expected this big surprise well maybe maybe a tech doesn't change their expectation that rate cuts coming I suppose yes for sure so exactly that's a very good point so the rate cut they were already pricing in and it's just very bad retail sales to to back that up again a decrease of eight tenths of a percent we were looking for an increase of eight tenths of a percent very very poor indeed however that doesn't dissuade investors from buying shares right now we see equity indexes across Europe gaining the footy is only a third of a percent but we do see gains of eight tenths of a percent in Paris six cents resent in Frankford so we're looking at some substantial green arrows across European equity indexes and they're all rising in terms of what we expect in the U. S. of I look at the US equity index futures I see green eras there as well about two tenths of a percent for the gains on the Dow S. and P. and nasdaq E. mini contracts as you would expect investors feel comfortable enough to sell off dat treasuries price down yield up one spot eight one eight percent buying the dollar against the yen actually right now there's very little change in the dollar yen at one ten spot one eight three but you can buy a lot of the end for one US dollar right now an ounce of gold cost fifteen fifty four forty one and oil is going for sixty four dollars and seventy one cents a barrel for the global benchmark Brent crude if you look at the U. S. NYMEX WTI contract it's right now up to cents to fifty eight fifty four let's talk about the global trade the topic of the week of course and now the tariffs and the ease at new trade trade chief has accused president trump of being quite obsessed with the US trade deficit Phil Hogan says tariffs will lead to higher costs for businesses and consumers he spoke exclusively to Bloomberg's Vonnie Quinn as he wrapped up his three day visit to Washington what is the objective of the visitors to try and reset the relationship try to understand each other in relation to a number of traders and some of them at the moment and find common ground with the United States in addition of any issues when we started on a positive note from shoes to her the United States the European Union and Japan signed up to a statement to say that we wish to have an issue around industrial subsidies and force technology transfer and then for just on the basis of a level playing field for the global economy and all of the players in the future and to the WTO process and to reforming the WTO so this was a positive agenda so you don't have another bilateral meeting today with the US trade representative Robert like highs are curious did you receive any assurances that there will not be new tariffs slapped on the you know we didn't have a shortage written expect any assurances from the best allies has of rumors of somebody I respect very much and of course he has a very big trade week in terms of the statement of the European Union and Japan the the big deal that was done between the United States and China yesterday and of course the passing of USMC it today in the Senate so is a very big week for him and of course we are going to continue in touch because we expect to be in the office together next week to continue our discussions the threat of twenty five percent tariff sunny you'll has has been out there for a while did you get any sense that that is still alive right you said a fairly came off where did it come well it certainly didn't come up too often in terms of questions of after voters by the administration of by Congress or our inner circle in any of those the the the business of making to business owners Asians with course that doesn't mean it may not come up in the future book we have difficult is at the moment in relation to tides arising from error possum and Boeing and of course discussions around the digital tax agenda was very important for the United States point of view and we're trying to work out some solutions if we can in the coming days the card Harris for one more moment The Washington Post had a story out there that in the days before the U. talks and warranty Ron about deviating from the G. C. P. O. a that the trump administration and basically said you need to do this or we will slap a twenty five percent higher did that happen I don't to get help I think that's a that's something that certainly wasn't raised with me during the course of any meetings I had with the administration all right and that was our very own Vonnie Quinn talking with the new E. U. trade she feel whole again now let's get to the world and national news for that we go to Lee and Gary Leon Max good morning that starts in China where the economy three six percent in the fourth quarter from a year ago in line with.

"On the padding of the cushion with U. K. engineering she says a virtual pet could take the place of a real one it's for people who may be allergic or there in all its own in their apartment with elderly people she does still shed a lot like stone ABC news it's seen in Las Vegas cool news time one sixteen justice Harvey Weinstein's rape and sexual assault trial began in New York prosecutors in LA announced new charges against the movie producer this is LA county district attorney Jackie Lacey we believe the evidence will show that the defendant used his power and influence to gain access to his victims and then committed violent crimes against them ABC's Erin to Turkey is covering this and joins us on the call one is line Erin you are in New York initially covering his trial there but what can you tell us about these new charges in California they involve rate and and sexual assault the same charges one teen faces in New York but involving accusations made by two other women one of you says that she was raped in a Los Angeles hotel after Harvey Weinstein pushed her way through and pushed his way through the through our door and then the second woman who says the very next night Harvey Weinstein was at her hotel in Beverly hills and sexually assaulted her there how might these new charges influence the trial in New York I would imagine at least as far as selecting a jury it's gonna be a little more difficult well you think right now because there's no way in hell for the jury to to be inoculated from the news but the screening is going to be in tomorrow so the the the lawyers can try and and and raise the question might have any of the the pre trial publicity or the new charges would impact their ability to be fair a hundred and ten potential jurors are going to be the first full body and they'll be asked he can return in partial and that's the very first question so but undoubtedly it's it's bad timing for are the ones being now is you know you you take the charges at face value looks guilty on two coasts are there likely to be charges and other states are we just think in California New York at this point those are the only two states we would open cases today there were there were investigations overseas but in in London and Paris but I'm not sure those are are ever going to be charged criminally as far as the time line goes you said jury selection is going to begin our at least interviewing beginning tomorrow what happened today and what is the time line look like going forward David there was just a pre trial conference in that really seem to set the tone for for how this is going to go down because almost right away lawyers started sniping prosecutors accused the defense of abominable conduct in speaking ill of some of the witnesses and then the defense shot back that the feel they have integrated anyone in the the the the prosecutor was abominable for hauling Harvey Weinstein a predator when he hadn't been convicted of anything so the the smoking started early defense also perhaps anticipating that these charges in LA were coming had asked that the jury be sequestered for the duration of the trial the judge rejected that ABC's Erin to Turkey with us on come on news thank you thank you come on news time one twenty L. insurance business update from Jim chest go how responsible is a tour operator for injuries you sustained while on a tour or about to find out a woman is suing trip advisor after she claims of runaway tumble tossed her to the ground during a tour of Morocco the woman is accusing the Massachusetts based company up and they get negligence and breach of contract for failing to ensure the camel tour company was operating safely according to the lawsuit Alisa was placed on a camel that ran off from the caravan she fell and broke her arm that's your money now on Wall Street closing numbers were positive after being well in the read most of the day the Dow higher at the close by sixty eight points to twenty eight thousand seven hundred and three the nasdaq up by fifty points to nine thousand seventy one of the S. and P. five hundred higher by eleven points to three thousand to forty six local stocks a little bit of a mix there Alaska air group down by a half percent Amazon up by one and a half percent some gains as well for Microsoft Nordstrom cosco and Boeing slight losses for Expedia and Starbucks red fin down today by about one percent we check your money news at twenty and fifty past the hour here on call and coming up after traffic I'm Brian Calvert with the students who took it upon himself to make sure classmates get a hot lunch.

"Caesar's. pizza pizza. plus tax which is our listing what. we are back on the U. K. healthcare marks to show and we get some of your questions in a minute but a couple more things that may cover some of your questions I want to bring up what coach stoops yet this when it is conference today it's about its fourth that Russia won the wildcat call there tell me a number one I I'm assuming you guys have analytics that tell you percentage of formations and types of plays and how well they work for you in situations but the others as a former defensive coordinator why do you why is that a tough play to defend in that situation well you know ironically we we look at a lot of short yardage by the way like everybody does and in constantly listen to Chris if there's Chris so I don't know I really don't pay attention didn't hear a thing or see a thing I've been buried we had tons of great recruits on campus we've been swamped so I don't know if this criticism or not but it's fair you know we look at all options in half to in court you know every team's different you know plays are different each week their stress on defenses and sometimes you feel like you can't move some of those guys so you have to be creative or go outside or throw it or whatever sometimes you can't first of all let me say on the fourth and one we had a missed assignment and it was very unfortunate because our offense blind has played lights out they allowed one sack to to to live in that in that was on this time you know invades how I didn't say no one had not been in service for their Stewart there. but they they have played I can't tell you how many good things they've done in coach farming and and those guys are played so well on the fourth and one we blocked it wrong period it's a first down. it in I mean it's as simple as that you know now to the fans can you do other things of our cat at its semantics when you motion the quarterback out smack in stacks snap it directly to the running back who is directly behind the quarterback Tom there's no difference do you think they're going to throw the if the court records are standard they really think we're gonna throw out there yeah I'm a so with the quarterback I don't you have the opportunity to sometimes get a softer edge thank you would place one now sometimes and you run the exact same play the quarterback just doesn't hand off to what he takes a direct snap so. it was a misstatement it's a it's a darn shame because those guys offense of lime wise or plan on incredible you know well we we kept them off balance all night you know we were able to run effectively we were able to protect and throw the ball again we threw the ball more than them I mean we were you know aggressive and kept markdowns in the office wanted incredible job unfortunately we we had a missed assignment that we generally don't make in that in that position and that that spot how did the personnel losses at the safety position impact your strategy defensively it it hurt us big time the error is being immensely at that time because there are what we call simulated cinders pressures and different things that are. in other exotic you know there there's there's some thinking to it you got it that just by formations are they into by two or the three by one of the an empty in four to give you a lot inferred for it in hand cuffed us a great deal on hand cupped Brad what he was called so it was difficult yeah I believe corrected this too for bread told me that you also rely on safe these to make calls in other words for some of the other guys in the secondary yeah so one of the guys that you're counting on a veteran and use it to make that call and then Tages plates they're both gone yeah yeah I don't want you don't have time to read three D. nobody does you you just don't have enough time who comes into the mix now touches question will get mole in the fax modem was of course yeah a quandary mostly to play a little bit thinking everyone dreams doing some things in plants and safety and trying to place of nickel and we put him in there we did go man and we just get did gives try to get sticky because we were getting nickel and dime did quick game and all that in it but we were able to overcome we we overcame it the Dow will won the series late made upon. we had a good driver thank installed get him back and we're gonna stop again and then we get the targeting you know and and so we were over coming in some fires were we're really short then we try to go to some man a place of type coverage and get the PR you know gets pass interference call quandary so we you know it was it was difficult so that factors in to that last drive again. you know I mean offense William winter because you would prefer not to be out there what we were doing how we were you know hold not were you know in that in that situation defensively Sadri questionable this week Hoskins questionable right yes they are and then you made today injected a chart of the got the secondary at a wrist moderates procedure and he's a little quest for smaller bass stuff will still yeah a little bit and get a little thin yeah we all right let's will come we get caught up on breaks and then we'll get to your questions tweet the men text them in post on Facebook or give us a call and we'll get till we come right back here on the U. K. healthcare marks to show the U. K. sports network. with the program this.
